Tiny Miracles is a not-for-profit organisation committed to the upliftment of marginalised communities across Bombay. The aim of Tiny Miracles is to break the poverty cycle through an inside-out approach, working closely with the community and a sustainable upliftment through education and healthcare. A livelihood through design and craftsmanship is the means to this end.
They set out on an ambitious project, to build a community centre with every little aspect of the communities’ needs being met. Whilst the founders had a vision of what the space would be, they wanted to understand what the space meant to the community honestly.
This was our challenge.
Discussions with the community as well as smaller focus groups with the founders, also helped us calibrate the spatial arrangement of the space. The workshop aimed to ask the right questions which would equip us with the right set of spatial ideas, motifs, materials and programs to bring together a cohesive space for the community and everyone involved in the project.
We set out to build this community centre as democratically as we could imagine, by harnessing all the information and energies from all our collaborators. This resulted in the space being a shared vision of every stakeholder, combinative in its aesthetic and largely built by the community itself.

Pepe Heykoop, a renowned designer and artist who worked closely with the Pardeshi community and Tiny Miracles from its inception, conceptualized the dome of silence, placed between the office space and the factory space, where it stands as a symbol of pausing, a break from the continuous whirring of the sewing machines, as a way to recenter and take a breather. The dome was imagined as a lush green sanctuary, emerging from a green base with green cover all around it to further isolate it from the factory and restore some quietness in it. It is clad in bits of old sarees donated by the women of the community. Inside the dome lays a single crystal that illuminates the space from within. Around the dome, stones with various texts on them have been scattered. These stones are meant to be taken into the dome, the text invokes one to look inward. This practice makes the dome a meditative space that gradually builds with these stones over time.
