Is It Even Worth Risking Your Life For A
Selfie?
Written by: Natasha Christopher
A picture worth a thousand words may not apply all the time!
‘Selfie’ has become a common word for everyone to use so much so that in the year 2013, it was chosen as the “Word of the Year” by the Oxford English Dictionary. For those who are blind to this word or perhaps living another in a previous century, a selfie is an act of taking a photograph of yourself, with a camera held at arm’s length. This action alone has become so widely popular due to the famous social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and many more where their selfies are being shared out. I mean, is it even a selfie if you don’t upload it to your social media accounts?
ISSUE 19

Image: TIME
But then, how did the word/act of selfie came about? The first selfie (referred to as a self-portrait at the time) has been credited to Robert Cornelius in the year 1839. He was one of the American pioneers of photography produced a daguerreotype of himself. Of course, back then there’s no such thing as a smartphone so what Cornelius would do is uncover the lens, run into the shot, hold his pose for about 2-3 seconds and replace the lens caps again. There’s even a Hollywood cameraman named Lester Wisbrod claims he is the first person to take celebrity selfies and has been doing so since 1981. However, the originality of the term was prominent until a group of Australians, where a man took a bruised photo of him after a drunken night out and proceed to call the picture a selfie. Thus, begins a worldwide trend of taking selfies. Those who love to drink alcohol or occasionally get drunk, you know that’s where some of the best or worst stories happened. For them, it only took a drunken night and a word to start the selfie era.

Selfie Enthusiast or just a Narcissist? All of us have taken a selfie at least once in our lives with the latest technology advancement. From famous poses that have created from a selfie was a duck face - pouting face with a less serious face, kissy face, “found light selfies”, brow game and many more. If you’re taking a selfie with a group of friends, it’s now called a welfie. But that’s another story for now. Selfie, over the years, have made it easy for one to capture a picture of themselves but it caused a potentially unhealthy sign of mental health issues. Universiti Malaya consultant psychiatrist Assoc Prof Dr Rusdi Abd Rashid said the trend of taking selfies had yet to be classified as a chronic mental illness but it had reached a worrying level. (source: The Star Online, 26 June 2018). There’s even a correlation of narcissism and psychopathy that exist behind a selfie. The side effects of a selfie has become so bad that a study on a published paper that delves into “An Exploratory Study of ‘Selfitis’ and the Development of the Selfitis Behavious Scale’ created a Selfitis Behavior Scale (SBS). The SBS states that those who take at least six selfies and upload it on their social media accounts daily are classified under chronic selfitis (obsessive selfie-taking). The study that was conducted by one of the researchers, Janarthanan Balakrishnan tells the New York Post, “typically, those with the condition suffer from a lack of self-confidence and are seeking to ‘fit in’ with those around them and may display symptoms similar to other potentially addictive behaviors,”. Admittedly, we are sometimes guilty of taking a picture no matter how dangerous it is because we just want to be included and accepted by our followers that we’re a cool and happening type of person. Some of us even tend to measure our popularity by the number of likes our photos get or get more followers. However, it can tarnish one’s self worth and esteem.

How dangerous is a selfie? From a harmless picture trend that turns out to be deadly. Now, putting aside the mental health issue behind a selfie, there are some people or famous figure worldwide who have risked their lives for a selfie and only resulted in deaths. According to the researchers at the US National Library of Medicine, it was estimated that 259 people died while taking a dangerous selfie between 2011 and 2017. A dangerous selfie can be taken from atop a skyscraper building, beside a dangerous animal or something that could potentially harm you. Famous Taiwanese mountaineer who is widely known by her fans as the ‘Bikini Hiker’ or her name as Gigi Wu, died from suspected hypothermia, after a fall in Nantou County. It took about 43 hours for the search and rescue team to reach Wu. By the time they found her, she had died. Although the irony in this is that she didn’t passed on while taking a dangerous selfie but she was known to take selfies peak of a mountain nothing but biking on. This string along with many other selfies related death. India is one of the world capitals for selfie-related deaths. The selfie culture in India has taken the trend a little too far for some of them. Since March 2014, a total of 139 Indians have died taking selfies. There were reports of three men crushed to death by a speeding train as they were intending on taking selfies on the tracks in the Indian state of Karnataka. It even took the lives of an 18 year old student on a class picnic, where the India native lost his balance while taking a selfie atop a rock by a dam near the central Indian city of Nashik.

Authorities even took extra steps in identifying and declared 16 dangerous spots in Mumbai as “no-selfie zones”. One of its popular tourist spots like Marine Drive and Girgaum Chowpatty Beach. An Australian Broadcasting Corporation article suggests that India’s higher death rates are likely due to its strong visual culture impact. Younger men are found to be more likely to take bigger risks than women do.
Image: studypress
Sri Lanka is also known to be a dangerous spot for a selfie especially when it’s a country known for luscious mother nature and lunging death mountains. Just last year alone, a German woman fell to her death while attempting to take a selfie at the Horton Plains National Park. She was trying to capture her own picture on a 1,000-metre cliff called World’s End. By far one of the most selfie deaths happens in Sri Lanka is from their rail routes. It has gotten so bad that even a selfie ban on the rail tracks was passed last year but has yet to be implemented. Famous Bull Run place in Spain, Pamplona witness an American man’s life cheated death when he stopped to take a selfie with a raging bull and ended up being gored in the neck by the bull. Doctors said it was “beyond miraculous” that the horn didn’t hit his jugular vein or major arteries. It all happened when he was taking a video clip and a stay bull ran at him. The animals in Pamplona usually weigh up to 600 kg. It became so bad that officials had to step in and acted on a new law that has been passed where people can be fined over EURO 4,000(RM18,300) if get caught taking selfies with the bull. Besides a huge bull potentially killing your life, a woman was even attacked by a jaguar at a zoo in Phoenix, Arizona when she allegedly stepped over a safety barrier to take selfies with the wild animal. Another one was when a Malaysian student fell to his death in Taipei while taking selfies dressed as Spiderman. Police believed he was posing for a photo while either standing on or hanging off the ledge of the rooftop which would have made him lose his footing, grip and fallen.
Image: SUSANA VERA REUTERS
There’s another term for a person to be climbing high places and taking a selfie as end results. “Rooftopping” is a relatively new trend. These photos or videos taken by rooftoppers can gain hundreds or thousands of social media followers in just a matter of months. However, with the “cool” looking pictures taken from hundreds of feet above ground, things could take a wrong turn too. Someone as young as 17 years old falling to their deaths. Rooftoppers in Malaysia can be charged under Section 336 of the Penal Code, for endangering the lives of others. The charge carries a maximum penalty of three months in jail, and RM500 fine or both. Countries like the United States, Australia and Canada also have laws against rooftopping. About a total of fewer than 10 deaths been reported in Malaysia from a selfie-related death. Although this number is not as significantly high as India, it's always good to ensure you have great memories while taking a selfie without risking your life.

Istanbul I landed in Istanbul early in the morning. Istanbul is where continents collide. This magical meeting place of East and West has more top-drawer attractions than its stunning architecture. Istanbul is a central hub connecting Asia and Europe, blending the past and the future, bringing together cultures and people from all over the world. The city brings some of the best opportunities in the world, such as architectural monuments, exciting historical places and unique holy sites.
The Süleymaniye crowns one of İstanbul’s seven hills and dominates the Golden Horn, providing a landmark for the entire city.

CAPADOCIA With the first light hits the day, I took a onehour flight to Cappadocia. I continued my full day journey starting with Devrent Valley with its eye catching, unique chimneys, Pasabag (Monk’s Valley), fascinating Avanos, the beauteous valley of Goreme and Open Air museum where the remains of churches and early Christian dwellings, hewn from the soft rocks and stones, dating back thousands of years, are still standing.

Travelling Taboos Around Asia Countries Written by: Natasha Christopher Asia is a continent that is filled with a melting pot of culture. With culture, there’s always a lot of traditions and mutual respect to adhering to when you’re travelling around Asian countries. You’re bound to experience cultural differences so it’s good to understand their local culture and rules of a certain country when you are visiting. In hopes to not offend the people living in that country as well their customs, here are some big no-no things to do.

Dining Any restaurants in Asia would sometimes require you to use chopsticks. There are a few ways to use them without insulting anyone. You shouldn’t stick your chopsticks vertically into your rice. It’s believed to resembles the incense sticks that Buddhists offer to the dead. Plus, don’t cross your chopsticks when you place them on a chopstick rest. In Korea, always place your chopsticks on the table and not parallel across your bowl when you’ve finished eating. As a sign of respect, Koreans would normally let the elders or the most senior person start eating first before they could. Banana leaf is an essential food served in Malaysia and many Indian parts of the Asian places. When indulging scrumptious Indian food with the banana leaf, it’s a must to eat with your hands. Of course, it’s not shunned upon when you eat with a fork and spoon but it’s an experience and culture to try once in a lifetime. Lastly, after you’re done with it, always fold the leaf inwards towards you to show appreciation towards the meal. Folding outwards is usually done during a funeral.
Image: Trip Savvy
Besides that, in Cambodia and China, you should eat up but not all the way. A rather unique taboo that you should leave some food on your plate but it only shows that your hosts were hospitable.
Mind Your Manners Especially in Japan and Korea where respect is highly sorted after in their culture. Show your respect for the Japanese culture and customs by politely bowing to others. Blowing your nose, being loud, eat or drink while walking or on public transportation are all considered rude and frowned upon. When it comes to Japanese culture itself, don’t tip anyone as it’s not part of their culture. Even leaving small change may have people running after you with it. This is due to the workers feel they are getting paid to do their job and take pride in it well, so they feel they don’t need an added incentive. Most Asian household would offer you a drink or food to eat and never reject them. For example, if someone offers you a drink of water when you’re in Laos, accept it with an open heart, even if you’re not thirsty. Don’t step over food too.
Image: Trip Savvy
King and Leaders King and leaders are revered in some Asian countries. Especially in Thailand, once found disrespecting their king can result in a 15-year old sentenced to jail. This doesn’t just apply to travellers but also for local Thais. Three years back, three Thai women were convicted of insulting the monarchy but now are being released from jail after receiving royal pardons. It is a serious crime here so remember to always be respectful of the beautiful culture Thailand has to offer. While travelling in Indonesia, it's always best to not insult the president or vice president. Although this law was declared unconstitutional and abolished in 2006, however, the government is planning on bringing back the law. If the draft is approved, an insult could get you up to five years in prison.
Image: news.com.au
Be that as it may, Asia countries are one of the most visited continents and perhaps presents some of the most iconic places ever. Following the simple etiquette rules might just help you explore the Asian world better with respect.

How long have you been a photographer? I picked up my first camera at the age of 13 (13 years ago) but my first paid photo shoot was at 18 (8 years ago)! So depends on who's asking!
Where did the passion for photography started? When I saw what my favourite photographer could do with the click of a camera. Lara Jade used to shoot self portraits and manipulate the pictures to be ethereal and a little dark and I thought to myself, "This is photography". The fact that you could be absolutely anyone and express yourself in absolutely anyway. I was 13 when I found her on DeviantArt and I became obsessed with wanting to capture someone's (even my own) aura in a picture, the way she captured her own. It's like a show with no music or scripts!
What is your favorite subject to photograph? Why? Humans. I used to enjoy shooting landscapes and capturing the beauty Earth has to offer. As I grew up, I learn that humans are part of that beauty too. ESPECIALLY in their own individuality and environment. Women in particular are my favourite because it’s like a comfortable SAFE room just booming with strength and empowerment and most importantly SUPPORT. We thrive, both in front and behind the camera.
What is your favorite type of lens or camera to shoot with? Why? I have been shooting with my Canon 5D Mark III for 7 years now. It is the love of my life. I mostly shoot on the same 50 mm 1.4 that I purchased with the camera (as my specialty is portraits). It's been my set up for so long. I do like experimenting with lenses that I can get my hands on but I seem to always revert back to them old boys.
What are the biggest misconception people have about the work you do? That I am just a picture taker and not an artist. I would like to think that there's a distinct style to my craft that people will hire me for. For the most part, with the education of what art is, the less people have misconstrued what photography is and have better understood my aesthetic. But even painters and graphic designers all have their own individuality and we would hope to be hired for that and not just to replicate something else our client has seen before.
Whose work has influenced you the most? Lara Jade! As mentioned before, she started with self-portraits and has bloomed into a renowned Fashion/Editorial Photographer. Even though she captures clothes, she also captures an emotion within the story telling of the clothing design. And every time she shoots celebrities, she captures their aura perfectly.

How do you educate yourself to take better pictures? By learning from others and learning from my previous work. Being inspired by people helps. You start trying new techniques in shooting and editing that make you grow as an artist! Experimenting with styles out of your norm is key to learning new technical things!
Do you use any technology/software to edit the pictures? If yes, kindly share with us what is it. Adobe Lightroom for all my colour correction and Adobe Photoshop for any extra skin retouching. Sometimes VSCO if I'm on the go and have my iPhone SD Card reader on me! I never stop moving!
What other types of pictures would you like to take to expand your portfolio? I would love to do full on Editorial photos. I've not had the chance yet, but I'm going to keep working until the opportunity comes my way. The idea of working with a designer and their vision of the clothes they make is just so exciting to me!
When it comes to Instagram or any other social media sites, what do you think makes a good picture stand out from average? Emotion! Everyone can take a good photo or post an amazing composition, but if a photo strikes a chord within you, you know it's going to stand out to others!
One of the eye-opening photo projects that Annatasha did
What is (one of) the most eye-opening photo projects you’ve covered? Probably the one of Nalisa that I did, which wasn't even a planned project, she had just hired me for her own personal portfolio. We shared her photos that exuded body positivity and the reaction to it was overwhelming! Of course there were some negative people but what was truly overwhelming was the amount of people that just felt absolutely empowered with their own body shapes and types after seeing those photographs. And what was really eye opening was that these women opened up to me about how they have never had the confidence to get their photos taken because of how they look but it is SO important that they know a photo is beautiful because THEY make it beautiful. If you feel good, then your way is the right way to look gorgeous.
Most rewarding thing about your work? Giving my clients (particularly women) the safe space to be themselves. I aspire to capture the beauty within them so that they can FEEL and SEE how beautiful they are. It's really rewarding when my clients come back to me and tell me they feel beautiful after a shoot. That's what I want. I want them to be happy and feel good about themselves!
Advice to upcoming photographers wanting to go in the same path as you are? Be patient. Work doesn't come easy or fast but when it does, it is rewarding. Don't be afraid to experiment and learn from others. Your style in photography will not be at stake; PLEASE soak up all your favourite artists' vibes and energy and eventually you will churn out your own distinct look. Collaborate when time and money allows and don't forget to give people credit where it is due and in return, people will credit you for your amazing work!

How to Ensure You Party Safe and Have Fun While At It. Written by: Natasha Christopher
Attending college are what you would call the experimental phase in every growing child. You’ll learn to juggle between rushing for assignment, pull an all nighter to study, staying with roommates for the first time and just having instant noodles every day because let’s face it, food are expensive AF when you’re a student. Of course, when you study hard, you’ll bound to party harder too to release the tension from a long week. This is the time where college students go to the latest clubs/ bars and experiment with alcohol or just the fun culture of it. Whatever it may be, all this wild side from college certainly do teaches us the ups and downs to being a student and as a human being. I can vividly remember my college days like it was yesterday. Every weekend without fail, it would either be partying it up with college mates, dancing my heart out to Beyonce’s Crazy In Love or vibing to Drake in the club or my regular Thursday Ladies Night with my girls. It was one of the moments that taught me a huge lesson on partying. You don’t have much energy to party anymore once you start a full-time job. As time goes by, you begin to enjoy more of the company with your friends and chill drinks rather than the blaring loud music of clubs (depending on the music too!). I’ve had my fair share of making sure I party safe and to have a bloody good time while I’m at it. So here’s some things you can do to let your hair down and go home feeling less of a headache.

4. Be civil with the DJ’s
1. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE
Yes, DJ’s are there to set the mood, hype the crowd out with their songs, and to make sure all of you are having the best time of your life. It sucks when customer(s) decides to walk up to the DJ booth and think they’re holier than thou when it comes to music. If you’ve done this before, you’re just sucking up the soul of the industry and the hardworking people that have spend hours to craft the best music for your entertainment. You wouldn’t like if someone tells you how to your job, right? Trust the DJ’s.
If you look at the local news nowadays, they’ve been a number of drunk driving cases that resulted in serious injuries and even loss of life. No one and I repeat, NO ONE should be operating a moving vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is an offence under the Road Transport Act 1987, and in the event of death or injury to others, the driver can be charged under Section 44 (1), which carries between three and 10 years’ jail term and a fine of between RM8,000 and RM20,000.
One civil way of going through with this is, write on a piece of paper the songs you are requesting and pass it to the DJ. Also, doesn’t hurt to be respectful of the great job the DJ has been doing. Afterall, it takes two hands to clap when it comes to having fun.
To avoid the unspeakable from happening, there’s an option for you to take the E-hailing transportation services like Grab to ensure you have a great night and also be back home safe. Or you can simply assign a sober friend to drive you back home. Either way, my point is NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE.
5. You don’t need alcohol to have fun
2. No fighting
*Gasp*
Nothing ruins the mood more when you or any of your friends starts fighting after a night of drinking. Then it’ll just end up just with you trying to relief the fight or watch it go to shits. Humans, I appeal to you, if you have a problem with someone, it’s always best to settle it between yourself and to not put on a show where it may potentially hurt the onlooker and disrupt the bar owner’s businesses. Always follow in the words of Bhad Barbie when you feel like fighting, cash me outside, howbow dah. I kid, I kid. Seriously, violence is not cool. Just have fun and move along.
Breaking News: You can still have fun without the usage of alcohol. Sure, it may help you loosen up abit but if you have fantastic songs to dance to, it’s essentially about you having a great time with your friends. So, if you don’t need alcohol, but you have persisting friends, just refer to number 3. NO MEANS NO!
6. Know Your Limits
Which brings to this point. You never want to be that person who is unaware of your surroundings and being called drunk for the rest of your life. Limit yourself when you know you can’t handle drinking anymore. Enjoy other aspects of the party: meeting new people, catching up with friends, eating, dancing. Always be comfortable because you know what's best for you.
3. Understand consent
NO MEANS NO! I think many people fail to understand what consent is all about. Let’s give a situation of when a friend is offering you a piece of gum and you instantly say no. What normal people would do is to back down and not offer you again after you made it clear that you don’t want a gum anymore. Same goes to consent.
Alternatively, remember to HAVE FUN! Make sure you’re safe and the world is your oyster. Cheers to the weekend!
Someone been flirting/caressing with you in the club, but you are not interested in their intentions,, so you said no to any further advances. That’s when both people should back away. If any of you are scared someone is dumb enough to not understand the word no, always come along with trustworthy friends around you to help you ‘escape’.

Let’s check out some of the Italian dishes you can indulge here! Costata Di Manzo Alla Griglia, RM 76
Costata Di Manzo Alla Griglia, RM 76
The Italian word “Costata” is ribeye in English where this amazing piece of meat is grilled Australian chilled grain-fed rib (250g) with baked potato cake and mixed vegetables with a choice of sauce of not just one or two but three! You have the option of creamy mushroom, gorgonzola cheese and brown sauce. One of the best things about this main course is the fact of how smooth, juicy and tender meat is -cooked medium-well. I felt it was heaven calling my name through this wonderfully cooked steak. Pair it with every sauce available and it’ll double your chances of coming back here for more. The baked potato cake is also a great option for this food as opposed to normal mash potato. It’s a whole different experience that one should try at least once.
Chocolate Bombe, RM 25 For this dessert, you need to be ready with your phone to record the presentation of how this is being served. The chocolate bombe itself is hidden in a dark and white chocolate semifreddo with wild berries. It’s certainly a rich dessert that is packed with all the right sweetness and make you feel, ahh that was a great meal to end.
Pizza Carbonara, RM 29 Carbonara and pizzas, you might think they have nothing in common. In La Risata, they introduce pizza carbonara where it consists of beef bacon, mushroom, mozzarella and parmesan. Just imagine your regular pasta carbonara but in pizza form. YUMMY! Aside from the thin crust that is baked to perfection, it’s one slice portion is truly the proper Italian size - can be shared with two people or more.
Chocolate Bombe, RM 25
Gnocchi Ai Gamberi, RM 24 For those who are not familiar with what gnocchi is, it’s an Italian speciality of a potato dumpling with a flavouring of herbs and vegetables. In this take of gnocchi in La Risata, it consists of little potato dumplings and juicy prawns sauteed in herb butter. Just make sure you have a taste of the gnocchi and the prawn together and you’ll begin to see the magic in terms of its flavour. A great appetizer indeed!
Tomini Alla Griglia Con Peperoni Arrostiti, RM 40 I know. When I first tried to pronounce this dish, it got my tongue all twisted and wasn’t doing this humble Italian dish any justice. The presentation alone is just an Insta moment on its own. For those who are as clueless as I am, Tomini is a soft fresh cheese that is made of cow’s milk, alla griglia direct translation means grilled meat or vegetables. Comes in a sandwich like preparation, this appetizer comes with a grilled tomini cheese with roasted pepper, tomato and rocket on toasted ciabatta bread. Certainly, you can taste the freshness of the ingredients and a good starter to fill your tummy.
Tortellini D’Anatra E Porcini, RM 37
Spaghetti Alla Risata, RM 39 This house speciality is baked in foil with mixed seafood in a hearty spicy tomato sauce. The seafood given in this huge portion (2-3 person to share) is generous. The pasta along with mixed seafood of prawns, mussels, squid and clams makes it a great infusion of flavours that gives it a slight leverage of spiciness tinge to it. The perfect meal for a group of family to enjoy.
Tortellini D’Anatra E Porcini, RM 37
Gnocchi Ai Gamberi, RM 24
Tortellini are ring-shaped pasta that is sometimes known as belly button as it’s shaped like one. In layman terms, you can even call it a “Chinese wonton” but the Italian version of course. All of this tortellini are handmade that is stuffed with porcini ( Italian and French mushroom), button mushroom, with smoked duck mascarpone and parmesan cheese with fresh sage butter and completing it with truffle oil. Let me tell you something, this dish blew my mind away. Now only is the duck and the other ingredients blend well together to endeavour, but the sauce is pretty much the anchor that holds this tortellini dish to its perfection. Creamy and adds that zest to this picture-perfect Italian food.

He hopes to snowball the charity proceeds by RM140,000 towards the end of the event. “We do it to raise fund for an amazing nonprofit charity with Reach Out WorldWide where it helps natural disaster victims to their aid. With the participation of foreign media from Thailand, Philippines, Japan, U.S, New Zealand, U.K, Australia and many more, this gave an extremely positive impact for all 6 years of Retro Havoc events. They also were very stringent with the selection of cars that would be able to participate; it wasn’t as simple as registering. The cars were finally selected after months of research, and then the participants were invited to the event and no fees were collected to this. This because these enthusiasts have spent a lot of money to fix up the classic cars and to maintain the quality. Retro Havoc also invited participants that were midway in their restoration, this would give an insight to newcomers are would be keen to learn the ins and outs of classic car restoration.

NOW THERE’S A
NASI LEMAK INSPIRED SPORTS SHOE!
From having seen all types of fusion of nasi lemak, this time ASICS Malaysia announces the brand’s first-ever foray into the local sneaker scene with a special rendition of the GEL-KAYANO 5 OG, inspired by the Nasi Lemak dish, presented by local multi-label retail store, Hundred% (hundred percent) and Malaysia’s biggest sneaker event, SneakerLAH. Giving a local twist to the famed retro silhouette of the GEL-KAYANO 5 OG, it transformed an ordinary sneaker into something close to the hearts of many Malaysians by taking inspiration from the nation’s popular dish. The whole palette is finished off with a hint of brown, reflecting the nuts and anchovies. “What we love about the shoe colourway re-design is that; it centres around the nasi lemak which is a dish that everyone likes and a societal knot that all Malaysians can relate to and instantly love,” said Boon Tib Soom Nik, Country Manager of ASICS Malaysia. ASICS NEW GLIDERIDE SHOE BRINGS ENERGY SAVING TECHNOLOGY TO MORE RUNNERS Saving runners energy: ASICS has today revealed how the eagerly awaited GLIDERIDE™ has successfully adapted the GUIDESOLE™ technology, first introduced in the METARIDE™ concept, and placed it on the feet of more runners in a unique race featuring participants of different abilities from around the world. The human-centric GUIDESOLE™ technology is an ergonomic precision-shaped curved sole that reduces energy loss. It works by minimizing lower leg movement through the stride - giving a feeling of effortless coasting - to make it easier for runners to keep going for longer. Increasing the accessibility of the GUIDESOLE™ technology was the inspiration behind the new shoe. Engineered by a team of scientific experts and designers at ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS), the development of GLIDERIDE™ was fast-tracked to get the new technology to more runners as quickly as possible. The result? The new GLIDERIDE™ has taken the category-leading GUIDESOLE™ technology a further step forward. Whilst providing maximum energy saving, it is lighter, with a less extreme curve and more cushioning than the concept shoe - increased comfort. Retails for MYR629, the GLIDERIDE™ will be available for men and women at selected ASICS retail stores.

ONITSUKA TIGER COLLABORATION WITH KYE DESIGNER FOR IT’S BRAND’S 70TH ANNIVERSARY Onitsuka Tiger celebrated its 70th anniversary and announced a special collaboration with seven designers, popular in Japan and abroad. The fifth stage, to be launched on October 21, is a collaboration with Kathleen Hanhee Kye, the creative director of KYE, a brand highly rated by celebrities all over the world. For the shoes, Kay updates the “GSM™” which is inspired by vintage tennis shoes and named after the abbreviation of ”Game, Set, Match”. The style is characterized by its use of bold black and white color blocking representing night and day, a fastener at the instep areas to match the apparel, and contrasting white stitching. On the apparel, a motif inspired by a shining star in the night sky in white is emblazoned over a black base. The white and red lines on the side give a sporty impression. For the track top, a KYE original charm is combined with a pull tab with an engraved Onitsuka Tiger logo on the fastener. On the wide- silhouette track pants, a large, impactful star motif is arranged on the back. New images and videos created especially for this collaboration will be shown on the special website listed below, and also on social media. They are also scheduled to be featured in Onitsuka Tiger KLCC and Midvalley stores from October 21.

NIKON Nikkor Z 50mm F/1.8 S
The NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S features the iconic 50mm focal length, re-imagined for the Z system. It is a bright, sharp, fast-focusing standard prime lens for Z mirrorless cameras, and a serious value for the price.
Performance This lens does not fail our expectations with its capabilities of capturing plenty of details and classleading autofocus performance. If you’ve heard about the ground breaking performances of Z lenses, in how accurate and precise their autofocusing is, it remains true here. The focusing is fast in decent light. Obviously, the autofocus performance of the lens is directly related to the Z Mount camera body upon which the lens is mounted. During our review, we mounted the lens with the Z6. The 50mm almost always acquired focus during our testing. We are able to get sharp images of the cat with its eye in perfect focus and capture fine details of its fur. Central sharpness is impressive. There won’t be any big issue as long as the subject is relatively stationary.
SPECIFICATIONS The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S is one of three lenses launched alongside the Nikon Z6 and Z7. It is constructed from 12 elements in 9 groups, including 2 ED elements and 2 aspherical along with elements that have Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coating. Completing the list of important specifications are the 50mm f/1.8 S’s weather sealing and 9 rounded aperture blades, for potentially higher quality bokeh. Nikon also claimed that the Z 50mm S would offer superb resolving power and low aberrations, impressive enough to challenge assumptions about what lenses of this type should be capable of. The lens is suitable for portraiture, landscapes, street, and many other genres of photography.

Image Quality
Ergonomics and Handling
We found the image quality to be very good in our tests. It is sharp with very pleasing bokeh, which doesn’t really have a flaw that jumps out at you. Thanks to the lens design that features 12 elements in 9 groups with 9 aperture blades, the bokeh produced by the lens will likely be favoured by most photographers and it does a good job separating your subject from the background. The transition areas appear quite good in images when the subject is isolated from the background. The colour rendition is fairly accurate in most situations. Variance in tone and colour are solely due to changes in natural light in the shooting venue. The lens also keeps chromatic aberration, distortion and flare under control. We tried to shoot against a very bright source of light, and it proved that the lens is really very resistant to flare with very minimal ghosting and flare issues. Some vignetting is observed when shooting with the aperture wide open. However, you can eliminate this by using the Z6’s vignetting Control in its Normal settings for Jpegs.
Constructed from a combination of metal and plastic, the lens is characterized mostly by the massive ring on its body that double up as an ergonomic grip. The majority of the lens barrel is dominated by the large Customizable Control Ring that is configured for manual focusing by default. The Autofocus/Manual Focus toggle switch along with the NIKKOR S badge is located along the left side of the lens. The rear focus design with minimal moving parts contributes to the lens’s successful handling in difficult conditions. The focusing ring itself is smooth and quiet. The lens is fairly small and light to handle. It is weather sealed at the mount, along with a dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel as well.
VERDICT Throughout our time with the lens, it performed consistently and without incident. Details look super-sharp and you don’t have to worry about distortion, chromatic aberration or flare. The large maximum aperture helps a lot in autofocusing as it gets most subjects sharply focused very quickly. The lens also has weather sealing to match the camera and it feels well balanced with the large grip on the camera, though it seems quite a large lens for its focal length at first sight.
