Melbourne & District
TOWN’S SPORTING FUTURE BRIGHTER ENTHUSIASM for the Melbourne Sporting Partnership was re-ignited at a meeting attended by representatives of sports clubs, the parish council, and officers from South Derbyshire District Council. There were representatives from football, rugby and cricket clubs, joined by bowls and tennis players along with senior officers from the district council's leisure services department. Formed five years ago, the Partnership has seemed to many to be going nowhere, as the various clubs appeared reluctant to accept that "going it alone" was unlikely to provide the sporting facilities the town needs. Chairman John Harrison, County Council Cabinet member for Management and Finance and Deputy Leader of the district council, said after the meeting: "Those present arrived with apprehension about the future direction of the Cockshut Lane Recreation Ground, but left fired with a renewed enthusiasm that the collective dream of 21st century multi-sports facilities could still be realised.” According to Mr. Harrison, all the clubs gave a renewed commitment "to work together within the MSP to deliver the declared objective". Councillor Harrison informed the meeting that finance could become availabe from the district council, which expected funding to be made available from the sale of councilowned land. In addition, it was stated that the Sports Lottery Fund was
again to give priority, through the various national sporting bodies, to the development of sporting facilities. The fund has a kitty of an additional £4m. A Multi-Use Games Area was envisaged plus a multi-purpose hall for indoor sports. A start is to be made with the grounds, by the use of 100,000 tonnes of infill and topsoil from Davidson's Station Road building site, supplied free of charge, to level the badly sloping rugby pitch. Stuart Batchelor, South Derbyshire District Council's Head of Leisure and Sport, was very impressed with the spirit of the meeting. He said: "I don't think I have ever been to a meeting where seven clubs/organisations were so positive. I think it was an excellent re-launch, I can say that my team and I are really keen to progress work with the MSP.” Andrew Jackson, Melbourne parish councillor who has been involved with the MSP since its inception, was also very encouraged by the meeting. He said: "After years of setbacks and uncertainties, a new feeling of optimism developed at this meeting, with all club representatives seeming to support the joint approach to this ambitious project. “This is just the start of a long but what could be exciting road ahead for Melbourne's sporting life." A new sub-committee with a representative from each club will be formed to progress matters. Each club was asked to assess their individual requirements for pitches and courts, frequency of use, changing room/shower needs and car-parking.

Racing’s back at Donington DONINGTON Park has been given the official green light to resume motor racing following its successful £2million facelift Approval came from the motor sport governing bodies FIA and MSA, which granted a licence to race again after a final inspection of the track on July 29. The approval is a triumph for the construction firm Adroit which became the leaseholder in May and revamped the track left devastated after former leaseholders Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd went into administration, creating havoc with plans to stage the British Grand Prix. The Yamaha Racing Factory quoted Donington Park Ltd operations director Steve Watton saying: "Today is an historic day, even in the context of the rich history of this place. "The FIA and the MSA have given the green light for car racing to return to Donington, a circuit that has produced memorable racing in the past. "I would like to thank everyone who has expressed messages of support through the difficult months. "Donington is back.'' Adroit Group Ltd, a construction and property investment company, has a 25-year lease of the track with the circuit's owner Kevin Wheatcroft. The first event on the new track is expected to be The Masters Series and the British Touring Car Championship in September.

Not only was it Elaine’s birthday, it was also the day when a cheque for an amazing £9,000 was presented to Janet Sanders, of the Royal Derby Hospital's Nightingale Macmillan Unit, which cares for terminally-ill patients. The monies represented the proceeds from the sale of the 'Clean up for Cancer 2010' calendar, which featured pictures of people from South Derbyshire who have or have had cancer, engaged in a in a whole range of cleaning activities in well known locations. This was the second special calendar that Elaine and her team have created. Other fund-raising activities have also been held to raise monies for
the calendar fund. The evening was a great success with music by The Mink Hounds, a local band who provided their services free of charge. Through the generosity of the people attending a further £348 was collected on the night and the RBL donated an additional £50 towards next year's collection. An impromptu unaccompanied solo rendition of the Eva Cassidy song 'Songbird' was performed by 13-year-old Lilly Moult and brought huge applause from the gathered crowd. Lilly dedicated the song to Jenny Collyer, one of the calendar girls, Miss March, who died earlier this year. Pictured (from the left) are Elaine Dunnicliff, Malcolm Fletcher and Anna Moult with Janet Sanders.
intereSt ShoWn in PeAk oiL FOLLOWING the recent interactive presentation evening by Graham Truscott in Melbourne Parish Church on the subject of Climate Change and Peak Oil, there has been an encouraging level of interest shown locally and already a meeting has been held to pursue 'Actions to reduce Melbourne's vulnerabilty to Peak Oil and Climate Change'. A steering group calling itself Melbourne
Transition, has compiled a list of actions to pursue including raising awareness of the issues and identifying a small, achievable activity or demonstration project that could inspire friends and neighbours. Ideas ranged from a community orchard, a permaculture project at the school and perhaps even a 'plastic bag free' Melbourne. Commenting on the progress since his presentation evening Graham said: "I think
we have made a really good start with lots of interest and support from those who came and contributed to our initial meeting." A further meeting is scheduled for the evening of September 8. If you can help, would like to be part of planned rather than forced change, or just want to find out more, please contact Graham Truscott (862028) for further information.

A NEW health centre to serve both Melbourne and Chellaston will be built over the next 12 months. The existing High Trees surgery in Chellaston will close, when the new Health Centre, to be built close to the A50 roundabout near Swarkestone, is finished by June 2011. When the new facility is opened and running, Melbourne will become a branch of the main practice in Chellaston. One of the most heartening aspects of other planned changes is that from this month the Melbourne practice will be open on Wednesday afternoons. Practice Manager Annette Jennison said: "It is good that this will enable the doctors to work full days, rather than half days,
which will give better continuity for patients and GPs." However, there will not be a nursing service on Wednesday afternoons. The practice has reacted positively to the increased demands on reception staff at both sites, by increasing the number of reception staff on duty in the mornings. Annette Jennison, writing in the practice newsletter said, this will not reduce service provision in Melbourne. "The changes will free up clinical rooms in Melbourne, currently used for admin, enabling us to increase service provision". Dr James Long will wind down his days, working only Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. He will work only at Melbourne. Dr Iain
Black will also only work at Melbourne. Dr Philip Das, who has worked in both Chellaston and Melbourne, will now work full-time in Chellaston, although his Melbourne patients will be pleased to be able to book appointments with him in Chellaston. Dr. Heidi Wright, back since May after maternity leave, will work across both sites for three days, as will Dr. Clare Hallas, who becomes a full partner in the practice. A new partner, newly qualified Dr. Andrew Goodwin, joins the team this month, and he too will be working on both sites. * Melbourne patients wishing to access appointments in Chellaston are asked to phone 72007 or 721650.

THE Aston on Trent Welldressing festival’s Blessing of the Wells Service started at The Green with the Welldresser’s contribution, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The service was conducted by the Rector, the Revd Tony Luke and Methodist Minister Rev. John Lear. Pictured at the Welldressing are (from the left): the Rev. John Lear, Catherine Alberts (Parish Council), the Rev. Tony Luke (All Saints Church), Pat Simpson and Robin Gibbard (Well Dressing Designers), Carol Bagnell (History Society) and Steve Aynsley (Well Dressing chairman).
Well dressing a success ONCE again the Aston Well Dressing Festival was a huge success with the sun adding its blessing to the proceedings. The well dressing blessing ceremony, conducted by the Rev Tony Luke and the Rev. John Leah, was preceded by an introduction from Catherine Alberts from the parish council, the presentation of the award "Young Historian of the Year" to Emma Merrey by the History Society's Carol Bagnall and a fancy dress competition for the children of the village. Entertainment was provided over the weekend with bands featuring village locals Joe Nutman, Colin Clulow, Steve Aynsley and Aston Players. Mick Shaw played at the ceremony and later in All Saints Church which hosted a historic display of local wedding pho-
tographs and dresses. Faithfinder teenager, Jessica Lemons, sang beautifully with Mick in the Church on Sunday afternoon. There were eight well dressings prepared by village organisations to enhanced the weekend festivities and, with over 30 stalls and facilities provided by the two public houses, the White Hart and the Malt Shovel, there was lots for visitors and residents alike to enjoy. Monies raised over this weekend and from the sponsored walk organised by Haydn Wheeler and Dave Whittaker a week earlier should exceed £2,000 which will be shared between this year’s two chosen charities – the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance and a local initiative to improve the playground facilities in the playing field.

Brothers take over at fitness centre
Country Living with Robert Parker
Farmers now blamed for bird problem
THERE are new faces at the Picture of Health Fitness centre on Derby Road, Melbourne. Jordan and Matthew Illiffe, from a well known local family, have bought the studio from the two founders, Dave and Laura Middleton. The two brothers intend to run the studio in a similar way to the previous proprietors, maintaining the standards of the founders, and trying to keep up the good service that has made the business so successful. Matthew brings the expertise that he has
learned working for a fitness chain over the last few years. He is a qualified personal trainer and a gym instructor David and Laura Middleton, who took the challenge to start a new business from scratch back in 1999, have decided to seek pastures new, to look for new challenges for their enterprise and energy. Laura said: "Dave and and I would like to thank the local community for their support and custom."
AGRICULTURE is once again being blamed for a decline in numbers of one of our most common birds, but some organisations disagree. A recent survey by the British Trust of Ornithology suggests that in 2008 to 2009 kestrel numbers fell by an alarming 36%. This organisation says the reasons are unclear, but the RSPB is quite firm that harsher winters and changes in farming practices are to blame. To me that is very strange because over recent years farming has not changed a lot, and where it has, it has been to the benefit of all farmland birds. Set-a-side was introduced over 15 years ago and even when this became voluntary a few years later there was a lot of this land which did not go back into production, because farmers still got paid not to farm it. Many other environmental schemes have been introduced since, and in our own area the National Forest initiative is now celebrating 20 years in existence. Similar schemes are in place in all parts of the country. I must say in our own area we have a thriv-
ing number of kestrels. We have put up nesting boxes for barn owls which are regularly used every year by kestrels. I suppose the areas around the reservoir and Calke Park are a perfect home. But take a look around the larger area, there are plenty of good habitat for all birds. Some of our conservation organisations will not be happy until the whole of the country is turned into a wildlife park, and all our food is imported. Is this the way forward? ■ Harvest is very slow to start with very few crops being cut in July. After six weeks of scorching weather, I suppose we have to have a balance up, but I ask how could our climate do this to us. We have cut some crops of barley and yields generally have been rather poor and amounts of straw to use for livestock bedding and feeding is way down. Catering for cattle and sheep this winter is going to be a real challenge, as crops for grass for hay and silage have been very poor compared to usual. We have been cutting wheat for silage on some farms to make up the shortfall. Thank goodness our maize crops are good.

Brass concert is a real blast THE members of Melbourne Town Band would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who either helped with or who attended their recent charity concert ‘Blast of Brass II’ making it such a successful event. Although the weather had turned a ‘little chilly’ an estimated audience of 450 arrived for the ‘Picnic in the Park’ evening concert held at Park Farmhouse Hotel, Isley Walton, organised to raise money for, and awareness of, the Treetops Hospice and the Derby Multiple Sclerosis Centre. The Melbourne Town Training Band, now 33 members strong, conducted by their Director of Music Karen Worrall began the concert playing a programme filled with musical variety. After a few words from representatives of both charities, MTB
and their invited guests the Leicestershire & Rutland County Royal British Legion Pipe Band entertained those assembled for the remainder of the evening. A haunting melody called ‘The Gael’ had been specially arranged jointly by MTB Director of Music Brendan O’Neill, Pipe Major Phil Masters and Drum Sergeant Rod Duthie. This distinctive and unique piece of music performed together by the two bands was just one of the highlights of the evening. The evening concluded with MTB and the Training Band playing to a stunning firework finale. Both named charities will share equally the £4,000 raised from this concert and an official presentation evening will take place in the near future. - SW

Plaque tribute unveiled for bomb victims
NINE Royal Engineers who died when a bomb was dropped on Melbourne in 1940 were remembered at a 70th anniversary service when a memorial plaque was unveiled at the senior citizens' centre car park. Members of the Melbourne branch of the Royal British Legion decided to honour the servicemen killed and the bronze plaque was installed at the site of the bombings in Church Street. Relatives of the men killed attended the service and the unveiling. Melbourne Royal British Legion branch president Richard Heath said donations from residents and businesses in the town totalling more than £2,000 meant the organisation had been able to fund the project. He said: "This is something that we have wanted to do for years and I am delighted it has now become a reality. "We felt that, after 70 years, it was the last chance to honour these soldiers."
Seasonal gardening tips JEFF Bates visited Ticknall Garden Club in July to talk to the members about seasonal gardening jobs. Jeff is currently a judge for Britain in Bloom. He has visited Ticknall on many occasions and was warmly received on this one. He dealt with four areas of the garden – trees and shrubs, herbaceous, annuals and fruit and vegetables. He stressed the need of watering well after this long period of dry weather. Trees and shrubs planted since Christmas need a lot of water – 10 gallons for a tree every fortnight. He advised that when pruning fruit cordons, espaliers and fans and wistaria one should do it
At about 8am on July 11, 1940, a German plane dropped two bombs near Melbourne Pool. One was a direct hit on the building where the servicemen were billeted. The names of the nine men who lost their lives are displayed on the plaque. They are: Lance Corporal N. Wild and Sappers R. Butterworth, J. E Carter, H. Cook, A. W Gardner, H. S Killiner, J. W Robinson, W. Saxby and N. Simpson. Relatives of Sapper Cook attended the ceremony, along with senior Royal Engineers, former servicemen and the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire Willy Tucker. County councillor John Harrison said: "I very much welcome the fact that this tragedy is going to be the subject of a permanent commemoration in Melbourne." Pictured at the unveiling ceremony from the left are: Father Anthony Axe, Revd David Railton, Lord Ralph Kerr, Richard Heath, the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire Willy Tucker, Cllr John Harrison and South Derbyshire District Council chairman Cllr Neil Atkin.
in stages starting in August to discourage too much new growth before winter. He stressed that grass should never be watered as it will never die. Much more useful advice was given before questions were taken from the floor. At the conclusion of these there was a queue of members who engaged him in discussion for a long time. Members very much hope he will return next year. TICKNALL WI will be holding its annual country market on Saturday, September 4, at Ticknall Village Hall starting at 10.30am. There will be bric a brac, fresh produce, raffle, tombola and teas and coffees will be served.

Horse chestnuts hit by leaf grub A DISEASE that has struck horse chestnut trees throughout the country has now taken a grip here. The region’s trees have been displaying the first signs. Leaves of infected trees are already turning brown, shrivelling and falling months before autumn and giving the impression that the trees are dead. The cause is the ‘horse chestnut leaf miner’, an ‘alien’ (nonnative) moth that has caterpillars which live inside the leaves, forming distinctive patches of damage called ‘leaf mines’. Up to 700 leaf mines have been recorded on a single
leaf. Although the moths do not kill the trees directly it appears that they weaken the trees, which then produce smaller conkers and may become more susceptible to other lethal diseases. Local examples of infected trees can be found in Browns Field, Melbourne, and in Penn Lane. Bill Cove, Head Warden at Calke, said; "All of our horse chestnut trees are affected; they have a leaf miner grub that separates the upper and lower sides of the leaf whilst it tunnels and this then gives the discoloura-
tion as the leaf dies off. I think the drought has made it more obvious and the whole leaf seems to have died rather than just where the tunnels are". A spokesman for the Forestry Commission said: "Although the condition of the trees looks serious they are unlikely to die in the short term. A far more deadly disease is spreading throughout the country known as bleeding canker of horse chestnut which is a bacteria that causes death to horse chestnuts. Up to half of Britain's trees already have symptoms.” There is no chemical treatment currently available.

Marquee full as couple celebrate golden day THERE was a great celebration in Barrow on Trent when residents Ken and Heather Atkin marked the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. The marquee on the lawn was filled with 155 friends and relations who gathered for the 50th anniversary party. Among the guests was Heather’s bridesmaid from their wedding, Colleen Brown. Ken and Heather, both from farming families, had first met at Young Farmers meetings in 1958. Heather’s family farmed in Chellaston and Ken’s in Barrow. They married in 1960 at St Wilfrids, Barrow on Trent, and fellow young farmers of the period were also in attendance at the party celebration 50 years later. Ken was active on his father’s farm from the age of six but formally started working there when he left school in 1955 following in his father’s footsteps. Ken and his brother, Bill, even-
tually went into partnership and worked the farm together for 30 years. Heather and Ken have four children, two boys – Neil and Kevan, who now work the farm in partnership with Ken, and two girls, Judith and Jane. Neil is the current chairman of South Derbyshire District Council and acted as master of ceremonies for the celebration evening. Ken and Heather are proud to say that they have had 50 marvellous years together and they have enjoyed every moment. They also have six grandchildren of whom they are very proud – Lucy, Lewis, Sam, Amber, Emma and Sophie. The couple had decided that the celebrations should be a ‘no presents’ occasion but donations could be made to the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal where grandson Lewis underwent a successful major operation last year. A presentation to the hospital will be made shortly for £2,000. Ken and Heather are pictured at their golden wedding celebration.
Swinging into action THE long-running debate between parish and district councils relating to the re-installation of the swings at Melbourne’s Cockshut Lane recreation ground looks to be drawing to a close. With both councils becoming entrenched in their opinions regarding safety and common sense and The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents at odds with the SDDC Enforcement Officer, it has taken an initiative from District Cllr John Harrison to move things on. Cllr Harrison has agreed to allocate £1,000 from his discretionary allowance to finance the replacement of the swings, leaving the district council to fund the remainder. A compromise has been reached whereby the swings will be refitted and relocated away from the newly planted trees to a site closer to the car park. However, the work has not yet started and may not be completed before the end of the school summer break.

Uganda trip ‘heartbreak’ “IT was a heartbreaking decision, but the safety of the young people was my primary concern,” said Chellaston School head teacher, Ray Ruszczynski, on the cancellation of the trip to Uganda by 34 sixth form students from the school, many of whom are from Melbourne. The decision, taken only hours before the students were due to leave Chellaston on the morning of July 12, followed the bombing outrage that had taken place in the city of Kampala the previous evening when explosions at two separate locations within the city claimed the lives of 74 people and injured hundreds more. The explosions took place while people were viewing the final stages of the World Cup final on giant screens. Kampala was the intended destination for the students who had been fund-raising for the trip for almost a year. The students had worked tirelessly all year, not only to raise funds for the trip, but also to learn new building skills such as bricklaying, plumbing and tiling. As students and their families turned up at the school on Monday morning, many were already aware of the bombings with them being reported on the news media with deaths identified as 50plus and growing. The situation was tense with
MATTHEW NEEDHAM SOLICITOR & PARTNER AT
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website only offering the advice ‘Travel with caution’ and ‘Avoid certain areas’. The students were devastated at the news about the bombings and with the implications for their goodwill visit which would have seen them engaged in voluntary work in Mengo, a slum in central Kampala that is home to some of the poorest living conditions in the country. Their work at 'John Dickens House', a building wholly owned by Chellaston School, was to convert it into an orphanage for babies and young children. Three staff members from the school did undertake the journey to check on the condition of the building and to deliver gifts, resources and money for the project. Currently, the school is pursuing the insurance company, the airline and the trip organiser to see if there is any possibility at all for any refund or possible future discounts on travel costs. This will be a tricky route to follow but the school is determined to try and retrieve the situation because the students have worked so hard at making sure that this project is successful. The school will continue to build its relationship with the orphanage for the long-term as everyone thinks that this is a really good example of a school supporting disadvantaged students elsewhere in the world.

THE car pictured made an unplanned stop at what was previously the Sir Francis Burdett public house. The driver of the Renault Megane is thought to have lost control of the vehicle on the bend travelling from Derby. It spun around on the greasy road surface and embedded itself in the wall, making a reasonable sized hole. While not a regular occurrence, resident and one time landlord John Glaze told the Village Voice that it was at least the fourth time such an incident had happened.

Scarecrows wow ’em in Ticknall TICKNALL'S Scarecrow Trail was a superb weekend with even more visitors than last year. With a varied collection of scarecrows to view throughout the village and catering in the village hall on both days with the standard of service and quality of food reported as being 'exceptional' it made for an enjoyable time for visitors and residents alike. Children's entertainment and face painting was provided by the toddler group. This was very popular and every other child on the trail had a painted face. The church was open all weekend (with scarecrows inside and out) so visitors could have a look around and chat. The quizzes, both adult and under-15s were avidly completed and competition for the prizes fiercely contended, with both winners achieving
maximum points – much to the frustration of the quiz master who will have to try even harder next year to pose more challenging questions. The winning scarecrow was No 29, Dr Who and the Tardis, with No 23, TickAir (AirCrow) taking second prize. In third place was No 38 Darlek and K Nine. The second placed scarecrow, Geoff Holt's 'Tickair' was advertised for sale after the weekend to raise additional funds and it sold for £100 plus a donation of £50, to swell the grand total raised to £2,569.13p. Charities that will benefit this year are: Help the Heroes, Melbourne Community Transport and Ticknall Village Hall (Kitchen refurbishments) The event showed a tremendous community spirit with volunteers supporting all the activities and the scarecrow commitee would like to pass on their thanks to all who helped make the weekend such a success and also thank all the visitors who made the effort to support the event.
● Geoff Holt’s Tickair (Air Crow) was second and later sold.

Artists’ work set to go on show
Music chance for schools
AFTER two years of drawing, painting and creating, the National Trust’s Calke Abbey will be revealing the home-grown Timescape Traces art exhibition by the local g8artists group until Sunday, August 22. Works have been inspired by the natural environment at Calke Park and The National Forest where the landscape tells tales of nature, time and industry and how life has evolved over the centuries. Themes include ancient trees; pathways, bridges and tunnels; the human footprint in the landscape and seasonal changes. Philip Bittner, Assistant Property Manager at Calke Abbey, said: “g8artists have worked closely with us and our visitors over the last two years to create this really inspirational collection. It’s a fantastic way to help visitors see the beauty of Calke’s landscape from a great variety of unique artistic interpretations. It will really help to raise awareness of the need for forests and the conservation of the natural environment.” The Timescape Traces exhibition will be on show in The Riding School from 11am-4pm each day. Normal admission charges apply and no bookings are required. More information can be found at www.g8artists.co.uk
PUPILS from Aston, Hartshorne and Weston Primary schools and Melbourne Junior School are included in 122 schools across Derbyshire that are getting the chance to create musical magic, thanks to a teaching scheme, ‘Wider Opportunities in Music’. The nationally-funded Government programme, launched in 2006, is open to all Key Stage 2 pupils. Derbyshire County Council has been involved in the scheme since 2008 with pupils in Year 4 – aged eight or nine – being taught music in classes in addition to their weekly curriculum music lessons. Skilled tutors from local music services teach 45-minute sessions every week for a year so pupils and their teacher can develop their skills on an instrument. By July next year the initiative will have been made available to all Derbyshire schools with junior-age children, at no cost to schools.

GALE, Eunice Mary (nee Lester) 4 December 1927 - 4 June 2010 Neil, Keith and family would like to thank everyone for the outstanding attendance for Eunice’s funeral at the Melbourne United Reformed Church on 16 June. Sadly she had passed away on 4 June after being a victim of street crime in April. Pictured in the refurbished inner courtyard with the members of the school council are: (left to right) Mrs Smith (teacher), Mr Grant (governor caretaker), Jodie Cresswell (CreativePartnerships) and Ian Jones (Beeston Jones Design Consultants).
ASTON on Trent Primary School has completely refurbished the inner courtyard to create an indoor learning area. The school was able to secure grants from Creative Partnerships (£3,000) and Rolls-Royce (£1,000) but also many local companies including Hanson Aggregates, World of Tiles and Swarkestone Nursery donated materials for free.
Special thanks goes to those individuals who came to her assistance on the evening of the crime. We have received almost 150 letters and cards of condolence and wish to express our thanks and appreciation to everyone for their kindness, support and donations to either the British Heart Foundation or the Tamworth Branch of the RNLI. A memorial stone will be erected in the Melbourne cemetery on Packhorse Road in due course.
The children designed the area, and staff and parents also helped with the labour. There was also a `Bring a Bucket Day' when everyone formed a bucket chain to move the aggregate from the front of the school where it had been delivered, through the school and into the courtyard.
Forest fears are groundless FEARS that Robin Wood – owned by the Church Commissioners and managed by the Forestry Commission – is to be felled have proved quite groundless. The future plans for the forest, situated between Stanton and Ticknall, were unveiled by Forestry Commission officials to committee members of Melbourne Civic Society at a meeting on July 30. Barrie Thomas, footpaths expert of the Civic Society, first raised the local fears when there seemed to be a restriction placed on entry into the forest.
He arranged a meeting with the commission, and he and committee members came away totally reassured that access to the bridleway and footpaths through the wood would continue to be protected, and that better signing of rights of way would be put in place. The Forestry Commission unveiled an impressive 50-year programme of development which would ensure the wood would return to a mainly deciduous state, as it had been before the last war. Pam Adams, secretary of the Melbourne Civic Society, said: "It certainly was a very positive morning's visit."

ViLLage Voice PoSTbag Looking forward to my time in Melbourne I WAS reading your latest edition of the Village Voice, in particular the write-up on the forthcoming Melbourne Arts Festival. I have only been in the village for four months, started a new business, fought to get my kids in to the local schools, heard about the unfortunate incident outside Budgens in April involving the dear old lady, Mrs Gale. Very sad. Lost one of my locals. But amazed by the community's efforts to stage things like the recent Carnival, fabulous day. I am also looking forward to the Arts Festival.

Thanks for helping me in my challenge AS reported in the July Village Voice, I completed the Three Peaks Challenge with just minutes to spare. I was able to complete the 24-hour challenge only because I was supported by a great organising team before the event, and a fantastic support team while doing the challenge. I was only one of eight who completed the challenge, but we were all grateful for the help of the drivers and the support team. The challenge could not have been done without this support team.
All the people who helped make this event possible were old friends of my dad, who were keen to support me and the two charities which have benefited. We have more than doubled our target. We have had to date donated over £12,000, which will be given to Cancer Research and to the Sarcoma Trust. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this great result. Edward Hames

MELBOURNE Civic Society has presented a framed picture and details of the Holy Well to the landlord of The Pack Horse Inn at King's Newton. The Holy Well, which is maintained by the civic society for the common good, is located close to The Pack Horse and landlord Chris Baggott had expressed an interest in its history. He thought that visitors to the locality could be made more aware of one of nature's interesting features on his doorstep. Committee member Claire Sturges, with the help of Anthony Freeman of Origin Design, created the design. Neil Wright, chairman of the civic society, and Claire Sturges are pictured presenting the picture to Chris Baggott, landlord of the Pack Horse Inn, at the Holy Well.
Stick to the law, businesses are warned DERBYSHIRE businesses are being warned to stick to the law after a county council investigation revealed shoppers are not always getting what they pay for. Trading Standards officers investigated claims made by pubs, restaurants and cafes across Derbyshire that the food they were selling was homemade, home-baked, local or locally sourced. Of 14 businesses investigated only three were
found to be making truthful claims on menus, websites and adverts about the produce they sold. Trading Standards officers issued either verbal or written advice or sent warning letters to the 11 companies making incorrect claims. Businesses that fail to comply with the law can face prosecution and fines of up to £20,000 or a sixmonth prison sentence for breaches under the Food Safety Act.

New veNTure iS juST LouiSe’S cup of Tea NEW Melbourne Hall Tea Rooms proprietor Louise Blunt says she is "over the moon", with the reaction of local people to the totally refurbished popular local venue. Forty years young, Louise is pleased that her new venture has got off the ground so well. For her, she admits "life begins at 40". "Half Melbourne has been here since we opened," says Louise. "It is so important to have local customers. "It's a great venue, with so much to offer, and a marvellous job has been done, with a much enlarged kitchen, and new floors – it is such a lovely place to have a tea room".
She is grateful to Lord Ralph for the opportunity he has given her, in the excellent restoration work that has been done, adding that "Alan Staley and his team have done a great job". She admits that the starting up of the new business has been a "nerve wracking time", but she is enthusiastic and creative, and has firm ideas of what she wants to do. She and her colleague, Lucy Bonner, make everything they can on the premises. Louise Blunt is pictured with Lord Ralph on the opening of the tea rooms.

First for housebuilder A DEVELOPER and housebuilder has become the first in South Derbyshire to be given the highest rating in a quality design scheme. Homebuilder Davidsons received an A+ rating for its Millbrook development in Station Road, Melbourne, in the independent Ourplace initiative. Ourplace, adopted by South Derbyshire District Council since January, aims to further improve the design quality of new home developments by providing buyers with an easy to understand rating system. The council’s Design Excellence Officer assesses set criteria such as design of homes, streets and public places through to accessibility of local facilities and public transport. To achieve an A+ developers must meet 16 of the 20 requirements set out by the national Building for Life standard. Ibstock based Davidsons met 17. Cllr Neil Atkin, chairman of the district council, said: “We are always striving to ensure developments in South Derbyshire are environmentally friendly and meet the highest possible building standards.

Church packed to say goodbye to the vicar A PACKED Melbourne Parish Church, including parishioners, representatives of other local churches and organisations, believers and some non-believers came to say a heartfelt farewell to the vicar, Rev. Canon Dr. John Davies. For many years, everyone who knew him knew he was "a class act" and that it was inevitable that he would gain preferment in the Church and be selected for a senior post. He leaves to become Dean of Derby Cathedral, and incidentally will assume the title of Very Reverend. The highlight of the 'service of thanksgiving for a decade of Ministry in the Melbourne area' was the short address by the departing Vicar. He spoke of the "remarkably strong cohesive community", and that this strong community came together at the "great set pieces"at funerals, and weddings, at Remembrance Sunday, at Easter and Christmas, at civic services.

Canon’s farewell THE Rev. Canon Dr. John Davies wrote the following words for publication in the weekly Parish Church bulletin on the occasion of his farewell service: “It was wonderful to see the church full. The music and bell ringing for the short service were so special. Your generosity in my leaving gifts (a beautifully etched decanter and a handsome cheque) was outstanding. And everyone seemed to enjoy a good party. "In September I start to learn my new job. Meanwhile, I send my love and my prayers for the unfolding life of the church in these parts.”
■ RUTH Bradshaw and Ann Nichols are pictured viewing the Armed Forces Memorial during a visit by Melbourne Community Care to the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. The site covers150 acres and visitors can explore the beautiful grounds which includes 50,000 maturing trees and more than 160 memorials.
Dr Davies spoke of his "stunning, special" church in Melbourne, of its fine musical tradition, good congregations, and most important, the "treasures" who volunteered and made the church a living entity. He spoke warmly of his ecumenical partners. He emphasised the importance of his having developed interests and connections outside the church. He said that it was important to have such a hinterland of activity and interest to nurture and foster his ministry. He had been chair of the governors at Melbourne Junior school, a member of the Rotary Club, chaplain of the Melbourne Royal British Legion. In addition to fulfilling his role as diocesan Director of Ordinands, and his Industrial Mission duties. The service was followed by the presentation of gifts from his parishioners, the church choir, and from the Melbourne Churches Together.
‘Up to 18 months’ before replacement WHEN will the Melbourne group of parishes comprising Melbourne Ticknall, Smisby and Stanton by Bridge, have a new vicar? The Revd. David Railton, who is left in Melbourne as curate, told Village Voice that the process of selecting a new vicar would start with discussions between the Archdeacon, the Venerable Revd. Christopher Cunliffe, and representatives of the churches in the group.
The small committee thus formed will consider candidates for the post. These candidates could be persons nominated by the Bishop of Derby, or could be considered from candidates who have responded to advertisements in the Church press. The whole process will take "not less than six months, and less than 18 months".

FoRTNIghT oF FESTIval FuN THE Melbourne Festival, now entering its sixth year, gets underway on September 11, and for the following 14 days there is an abundance of good and varied entertainment on offer in the town. There are 14 performances until September 25, while the very popular Art and Architecture trail will be held on the weekend of September 18/19. The Trail features within a crowded day on September 18 a Great Shakespearian workout 2010 at 4pm, as well as well as a variety of music and artistic displays. The music and cultural events are geared to a very varied audience – highbrow and lowbrow. This is well illustrated by the opening events, the Sitwell Singers at the Melbourne Roman Catholic Church and, by
contrast, the amazing new blues singer Dani Wilde at the Public Hall. The Hothouse Band, a great jazz orchestra, surely will perform to a full house on September 16, as will Andra Sparks on Sunday, September 12. The extremely popular comedy night will feature Andy White and Dan Evans at the Royal British Legion. Get Rhythm play on the same night at the Blue Bell. The David Bowie tribute Band, Camp David, from London perform on the evening of September 18. In the last week there are readings from the cream of crime writers, at the Thomas Cook Hall, on Tuesday September 21, and on the Thursday of the same week,an hilarious monologue by Debbie Kelly called My Bril-
liant Divorce will be played at the Public Hall. The Musica Donum Dei, back by popular demand, will give a concert in the Melbourne Parish Church on the Friday evening. The festival reaches a finale with the popular and fully participatory rendering, in a "Come and Sing" evening, of Brahms' German Requiem, at the leisure centre. Festival Director Sharon Brown says that entries are still being accepted for the Open Exhibition, at the leisure centre on September 18. The best entry could win a cash prize sponsored by Reeds Rains (details 07765819428). ❍ The Village Voice is a sponsor of the Melbourne Festival

Airport outreach surgeries date THIS summer, East Midlands Airport will be holding a series of community outreach surgeries in Melbourne and surrounding villages in Leicestershire. The drop-in sessions are a part of the airport’s commitment to engage with the local community and are considered to be a valuable opportunity for local residents to feed back their views. Members of the airport’s sustainability team will be on hand to answer questions on any subjects, ranging from aircraft noise to the Community Fund or educational opportunities. The Outreach Surgery in Melbourne will be taking place at the Bill Shone Leisure Centre on October 14 from 3pm to 7pm.
Jamboree fun for the Scouts and Guides MELBOURNE Scouts and Guides have just enjoyed a great week at a huge International Jamboree at Chatsworth. Leader Chris Moore took a party of 43 Scouts and Guides to the event. "It was a fantastic week, so many things to do and so many new friends to make. There was caving, climbing, biking, abseiling, a large craft tent – so much variety, and a really busy week for everyone. We were really worn out by the end," said Chris. Chris and Penny Scothern led the party, with able help from Craig Scothern, Richard and Emma Warden, Heather Crocker and Stuart Hollingworth.

ASTON on Trent teenager Steve Mitchell, 16, has become the East Midlands Apprentice of the Year. To achieve this accolade, Steve took part in several weeks' work experience at the Rolls-Royce precision casting facility in Derby, which makes turbine blades for jet engines. The Chellaston School pupil has a passion for engineering and, at the age of 15, was combining his school studies with work experience at Rolls-Royce.
Working as part of a team, Steve was involved with a project that resulted in a significant cost saving to the company and it was this achievement that booked him a place in the selection process for the title Young Apprentice of the Year. In addition to his work experience Steve also had to catch up on the schooling he had missed, but he was not phased by the extra effort required. He said: "It has been a fantastic ex-
perience and I enjoyed the opportunity to make a contribution to the success of the business. “The placement at Rolls-Royce has confirmed I would like to make engineering my career." Having now finished his studies at Chellaston school, Steve is delighted to have received a letter from Rolls-Royce offering him an Engineering Practical Advanced Apprenticeship starting in September. ■ CHRISTOPHER Clarke, of Wilson, was delighted when he was presented with a gold watch, a special ball point pen, a badge, cash and a certificate to mark the occasion of having worked for Remploy for 30 years. Christopher, who has no use of his left arm, has been working at the Ascot Drive, Derby, site since 1980. Working primarily with textiles manufacturing goods for a whole range of customers, Christopher has been engaged in different roles during his employment. The Remploy Ascot Drive site is now the Automotive Interior Trim division and is a major manufacturer of vehicle interior and trim components. Pictured after the presentation is Chris with his mum, Eve.
upS And downS of criME in thE MElbournE ArEA SERGEANT Andy Sutherland talked of a reducing statistical crime trend at the Quarterly Area Forum and said he would be working from the Melbourne office in the near future as an additional pair of eyes and ears for the village when taking a break from his routine daily duties. Sgt Sutherland advised that crimes for March to May were down by 27.4% compared to the previous year with burglary, Anti-Social Behaviour, car crime all reduced. Bucking the trend violent crime was up 36% and robbery 0.5% up. Sgt Sutherland said: "The swing in numbers is due to one or two additional crimes and overall crime in the area remains low”. Addressing questions on the spate of burglaries in Melbourne during May/June, he
advised these remain under investigation. In response to questions on travellers' illegal camps near Swarkestone, Sgt Sutherland said that police were powerless to move them on at Lowes Lane/Moor Lane following a recent site visit by a health visitor, who found one of the travellers to be pregnant. An earlier Forum had identified resident concern with pedlar licences. He said that “these are issued by the police and authorise a person to sell house to house anywhere in the country". he said: "It is a pedlar's obligation to show the licence, if they don’t they are committing an offence.” The Pedlars Act dates back to 1871 relating to a person who travels on foot from town to town carrying goods, wares, or merchandise to sell.
A police “Have Your Say” event is to take place on Saturday, August 14, from 10am to 5pm at Sainsbury's, Civic Way, Swadlincote. Have Your Say was introduced to find out what the public think about the police service in Derbyshire and is the largest public consultation exercise undertaken by Derbyshire Police Authority and Derbyshire Constabulary. The District Council’s Chief Executive, Frank McArdle, advised that the Mercian Regiment will receive the Freedom of the District in November at Swadlincote. Mr McArdle commented: “It will be a proud moment for both the soldiers and our residents to recognise their commitment and sacrifices." – Stuart Blatch

Mountain bikers hit their peak in alps challenge NINE members of the Aston on Trent-based mountain biking club, The Aston Giffers, took part in the Passportes du Soleil mountain bike challenge held along the French/Swiss border of the Alps. This year’s event was hosted by the village of Chatel and involved completing the 75km off road course in no more than 10 hours. The route took in some of the most famous and scenic ski resorts in the region including Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets, Chatel, Morgins and Champery. More than 3,000 cyclists from all over Europe entered the twoday event, which included descending 21,000 feet of mountain side trails at speeds of up to 40mph. The team suffered some minor mechanical problems, but all nine completed the course without incurring any serious injuries.
The five-day trip was generously supported by Chester-based logistics company Great Bear Distribution, who supplied bespoke shirts and shorts for the event. The group’s endeavours helped raise funds for The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance and a presentation of a cheque for £2,500 will take place later this month at the DLRAA headquarters at Castle Donington. Anyone wishing to join the group on regular local rides or on their monthly sojourns into The Peak District, The Lakes and North Wales can do so by contacting the group through their website www.giffers.org. Pictured are (back row, left to right): Andy Johnson, David Ashby, John Green, Andy Marsden, Paul Goring, Ian Mackintosh and Tony Horner; with (front row) Paul Eastwood and Gareth Roulston.
Sailing to SucceSS at regatta LOCAL firm Breedon Plumbing and Heating took on the might of major national and multi-national companies, and came a very respectable sixth place in the Industry Sailing Challenge. The regatta, hosted and run by Sunsail, involved 17 identical yachts competing in a total of four races. The crews included teams from the accounting firm Deloitte, technology company Ricardo and the National Grid. The racing started early on the Friday morning with the teams setting off for the flagship event, the circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. After a close fought race to the Needles, the tides were against the racers, and progress was slow. However, as darkness fell the wind increased and the Breedon crew, held on by life-lines, sailed the boat safely to that night’s berth 20 hours after they had started, finishing in ninth place overall. After minimal sleep, Saturday saw a series of three short races, the socalled ‘round-the-cans’ racing. These consisted of races in the Solent, during which the boats had to sail round three or four defined markers. The Breedon team, thanks to an excellent start, and competent helming by Rod Theaker and Mike Featherstone won one of the races convincingly, coming seventh and 10th in the other two. The crew consisted of professional skipper, Vaughn Smedley, Rod Theaker of Breedon
Plumbing and Heating, Mike Featherstone of Tonge, Simon Vietch of Grant Boilers- Devizes, Jeff Pearson of Breedon and Emma Howells (above) of Melbourne. Grant Boilers UK, the UK manufacture of oil boilers, kindly provided the sponsorship for the
team entry. Most of the crew are not regular sailors, and their result highlights the importance of team work and competent leaders that are necessary for success in this exciting sport.

Cheers as ticknall lift breweries Cup ALTHOUGH Ticknall lifted the Burton Breweries Cup for the second time in four years, the focus this year is a convincing return to top, premier division cricket in 2011. In July, Ticknall moved eight points clear in Division One despite being held to a draw by a struggling Stainsby Hall. Stainsby’s Tom Wood (4-47) caused early problems for Ticknall, who slumped to 383, but Derbyshire’s Paul Borrington (126) had no such trouble. Borrington now has close to 1,000 runs to his name this season – including a stunning 190 against Denby in late June – and currently tops the division one batting averages. The classy county opener repaired the innings against Stainsby in the company of Rupert ScottJones (40), who helped add a century partnership for the fourth wicket, and Ticknall closed their innings on 239-7. Stainsby struggled in their reply and the home side had to settle for a draw, with their innings petering out on 203- 6. Ticknall seamer Zach Lucas took 1-21 in 15 overs, seven of which were maidens. Zain Abbas, the Ticknall professional, despite struggling in the Stainsby match, has performed very well this year taking 43 wickets. He has also been handy with the bat, averaging over 40. The other three senior teams at the club have been universally supportive of the primary goal of getting the club promotion and, as such, are all mid-table in their respective divisions. That said, the 4th XI may stand a chance of sneaking into division 8S. In the Breweries Cup final Luke Harvey’s men opened cautiously after being put in by Trentside using 10 overs to reach 25. Eight tentative overs later, with the score on 42, Eddie Ikin (22) decided it was time to up the tempo but only succeeded in holing out. At 48-2 umpire Chris Bates upheld a lbw appeal and Michael Jacques was on his way back to the pavilion. A period of calm was called for and was provided by skipper Har-
Still unbeaten MELBOURNE Tennis Club continued its winning ways with two more league wins to take its unbeaten run to nearly three years – and put the team just one win away from a second successive league championship. Away to Little Eaton 2nd team, Melbourne just came through with a 5-4 victory. With The Vinny Hallifield/Mark Swallow and Mark Rossi/'Malc Mason partnerships both winning two out of three sets and the pairing of Jeremy and Howard Cheisure winning one, making it the winning rubber. Away to Ockbrook 3rds, Melbourne came away with an emphatic 7-2 win. The pairing of Alex Slater and Mark Swallow winning all three sets aided by two wins apiece for Hallifield/Dave Faux and Ben Willians/Howard Cheisure leaves Melbourne needing just one win from their last two games to clinch the title.

vey in tandem with Rupert Scott-Jones, reaching lunch at 105-2 from 37 overs. Shahid Khan’s partnership with Harvey, 52 in just 23 minutes, had seen the score push on to 183-4 and the stage was set for a final push. Borrington entered the fray but his stay was short, a victim of some superb Trentside fielding. Ticknall’s final attempts were thwarted as Trentside continued to field well and the cup favourites were finally restricted to 239-5 however, Harvey’s superb innings was not cut short and he reached a well-deserved century. The modest target soon became a very challenging one with Trentside losing early wickets to the dangerous Khan (2-23) and the nagging pace of Zach Lucas (2-29) The match was over as a contest and at tea Trentside had slipped to 69-4. After tea Ayling (22) and Scott Dunn (20) put on the biggest partnership of the innings sharing 43 runs before Michael Jacques (343) restored Ticknall’s superiority by removing them both in quick succession. Trentside were all out for 157. ■ THE official opening of Swarkestone Cricket Club’s new pavilion will take place on Sunday, August 29. Swarkestone will play a 20/20 match against an Invitation XI starting at 3pm and there will be entertainment from 7.30pm. The pavilion will be opened by Mrs Susie Dixon, the club’s oldest member, who has had an association with the club and cricket in the Swarkestone area for all of her 97 years.

Kwik cricket season a soaraway success
SATURDAY, July 24, saw the conclusion of the Under 11 Kwik Cricket season in Melbourne with a ‘Lads v Dads’ game and a presentation of awards. Throughout the summer on Friday evenings they have been playing in the South Derbyshire U-11 Kwik cricket league against various clubs, winning a total of nine games. This has been enjoyed by about 18 young players aged between seven and 11 who have been a great credit to Melbourne as this was their first season. None of this would have been possible without the help and commitment of Jim Jenkinson, the club’s newly qualified coach, and the help and support of parents. The club is looking forward to next season when it will be running ‘U11 Kwik Cricket’ and also ‘U13 Hard Ball’, for which practice nets throughout the winter will be made available. Anyone interested in playing in either teams in 2011 should contact Tel Potts on 01332 864618 for further information.
Cup final glee for Town’s 2nd team MELBOURNE Town Cricket Club had a superb month which culminated in the second team reaching their first cup final for 45 years by beating West Hallam 3rds. The seconds started July with a home defeat against rivals Ticknall 4ths. A fivewicket haul by Colin Wakefield and 3-11 from Matt Heafield helped bowl the visitors out for 153 and Melbourne looked well set on 100 -1. But the dismissals of Ken Grant (46) and Mike Starkie (33) started a collapse and Town fe1l, 21 short on 131 all out. A week later at lowly Yoxhall 2nds, 4-34 from Dave Potts and 3-41 by Matt Heafield restricted the home side to 125-9 and inform Grant smashed 72 not out in reply to give Melbourne a nine-wicket win. They ended the month in the league with a quite remarkable victory at home to Barton 3rds, the visitors batting first and hit-
ting 195 for just one wicket down. This proved to be the only wicket to go down on the day as Melbourne won by 10 wickets with Ken Grant hitting 86 not out along with opening partner Andy Stanley smashing 80 not out. But the best performance of the month was in the cup semi-final where the team managed to set a total of 185-9 with Grant scoring 59, this time aided by Simon Rolfs (54). A brilliant spell of 3-34 by veteran Steve Price aided by 2-14 from Wakefield and 2-25 by Dave Potts helped keep the home side down to 145-9 and put Melbourne in the Harry Lund Final. The first eleven began the month away to Burton and, despite spells of 4-41 by Andy Potts and 3-24 from skipper Alex Slater, the home side amassed 255-9 off their allotted overs. In reply Town fell to 18-3 but Russell Allaway (62) and Slater (30) steadied the ship
and ,along with a hard-hitting 37 from Sal Jassan, Melbourne looked safe for the draw. But an astounding three lbw decisions in two overs saw them shot out for 151 with an unbelievable six lbw decisions against Melbourne in their innings. A week later at home to Lullington Park 3rds, 78 not out by Mick Meakin aided by 55 not out by an in-form Allaway saw Melbourne reach 209 -3. This was more than enough as the visitors were shot out for just 63, Slater doing the damage with 4-20 along with two wickets apiece for Jassani, Meakin and Potts. The first team finished the month with a remarkable eight-wicket victory away to top of the table Elvaston 2nds. A brilliant spell of 7-59 by Meakin left the home side all out on 163 and he capped off a fine match with 64 not out and along with Jassani who hit 53, saw Melbourne home with 18 overs to spare.
