SPORTING CHANCE FOR DREAM TEAM by DAVID BELLIS NEXT year is going to be one when crucial decisions will be made that will turn dreams into reality for Melbourne. Given time the ambitious plans for a Melbourne Sporting Club will come to fruition – providing up-to-date facilities that the town has desperately needed. The ideas now in active planning will include facilities and space for cricket, football, rugby, flat green bowls and tennis – all provided under the umbrella of a single sports club with first rate changing and social facilities. A total of £175,000 is already committed and is being spent on the levelling of a sports pitch – "a major improvement to the existing facility". By March, "a design brief for a social facility and pitch configuration" will be completed. A constitution for the new club is well in hand – a great achievement for the various clubs to come together and a mutual recognition that there is only strength in acting together, to provide sustainable projects that will benefit the Melbourne community for years to come. Outline design work for a pavilion has been completed and a project manager has been appointed. As Sporting Partnership secretary Douglas Keith said: "It's all systems go." The Leisure Centre project group, first mooted two years ago, has proved a more intractable project, with negotiation of the transfer of the lease by South Derbyshire District Council for the Bill Shone Leisure Centre, from Melbourne Parish Council to the new Melbourne Community Centre group, still not completed. A business plan has been completed, but the whole project requires a survey of the condition of the current Leisure Centre building, given that the district council officially considers the building as "not fit for purpose". When all the plans are in place and a full project proposal is completed, it will be put to the district council and to the parish council for approval. As the district council, in a briefing document has confirmed, "an enthusiastic group of clubs, organisations and individuals are working hard to formulate sustainable projects to provide sports, cultural and community facilities for all the community". Finance has been kicked off with a £90,000 district council allocation. But that authority expects both projects will be suitable for Lottery, sporting and arts funds.

THIS group of youngsters got up early to enjoy the first fall of snow of the winter and didn’t need asking twice to provide an action shot of them engaged in a snowball fight. The Village Voice photographer didn’t anticipate being the target but he should have known better. He didn’t stop to ask for names – but he did manage to capture this festive shot of a snow-covered Market Place.

Every Thursday morning at Melbourne Surgery from 10am to 12.15pm the Citizens Advice Bureau runs Advice Clinics and advisor Sharon Kinsella says: “The aim of the PCT Outreach Advice Project is to make our service as easy to access as possible for everyone. “As well as financial issues, we can also help with housing and employment problems, answer queries about consumer or tax issues, and offer advice on legal, immigration, family and personal matters.” Patients registered at Melbourne Surgery can arrange an appointment with Sharon either by telephoning 01283 210108 or via Melbourne Surgery. Sharon is very enthusiastic about the service and the results it has achieved on behalf of clients. In one month alone the service identified £105,515 overall in unclaimed benefits. The service now available in Melbourne is free, independent, confidential and impartial, available to everyone and will save people travelling to Swadlincote.

ASPIRING and current entrepreneurs in the creative industries were invited to unlock their creative potential and ‘ignite their creativity’ at a workshop held at Bill Shone Leisure Centre. Part of a series of roadshows organised by Derbyshire County Council in partnership with Derbyshire Arts Partnership and district councils, the free event attracted around 40 people. The schedule enabled delegates to hear how local creative businesses had developed and succeeded with a programme of local speakers, as well as helping attendees to meet 15 representatives from key business support organisations to discover what assistance was available across the

creative spectrum. Councillor Simon Spencer, the county council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Derbyshire is an enterprising county and we want to support people who may need a helping hand to make their ideas a reality.” If you are interested in attending related future events, you can register with the Derbyshire Arts Partnership at artsderbyshire.org.uk. To find out more about setting up a creative business contact Business Link advisor David Richards on 07825 344654 or to explore coaching as a creative business call 07905 034845. Pictured is Simon Spencer with some of those who attended the workshop.

Annual band concert

Run’s Relief booster

THE Melbourne Town Band will be performing its annual Patrons’ Concert on December 10 in the Baptist Chapel and the following night will be in concert jointly with Melbourne's newest band, BonJazz, and the Melbourne Male Voice Choir at the Catholic Church. On a more festive theme the Town Band will be playing for the annual Carols round the Christmas tree in the Market Place on December 17 at 6.30pm, sponsored by Melbourne Rotary Club.

SOUTH Derbyshire residents helped to raise thousands of pounds when they participated in the Sport Relief Mile held at Swadlincote Woodlands. The course provided a challenge for the 230 people who took part in the successful event, but their achievements resulted in £6,349.98 being raised on the day. The money will be spent by Comic Relief to help disadvantaged people.

academy status for Chellaston school

CHELLASTON School has been given the go-ahead by the Government to become an academy, after being rated as "outstanding" educationally. It officially converted to the new status on December 1.

Head teacher Ray Ruszczynski was delighted with the news, and said: “We have been consulting with parents and unions about the proposal since July.” Becoming an Academy is a natural progression from a Grant Maintained status to Foundation status and then Academy. "The main reason why we sought conversion is financial,” said Mr Ruszczynski.

“The previous head, Howell Thomas, and I have complained for years about the gap between the best and worst funded schools in Derby and Derbyshire. “The gap between us and the best funded school in the city is £2,000 per year per student. We have 1,750 students – so if you multiply the two sums, it is a huge amount of money to which we do not have access year after year. “We will now receive all of the money due to us paid directly by the Department of Education. We will no longer be funded by the local authority. The additional money will go on resources for students and staffing." The school has no plans to introduce

changes that will affect the nature or ethos of the school, its catchment area or its admissions policy. However, it will be free to decide its own curriculum, employ its own staff and act independently of the city's education system. "We shall continue to work with Sinfin Community School as the 'Lead Partner' in a National Challenge Trust and will also continue working with all our other partner schools in the city and beyond," said Mr Ruszczynski. "The trustees will ensure that the school continues to provide an effective and efficient education for children in our community."

WHAT a culture shock the weather brought us at the end of November! The last Sunday of the month saw what must have been the sharpest frost I have ever known for late November. "Ice in November” is the old saying "to bear a duck " but this time it would have held a big dog or a small human and what we have to replace sludge and muck that's worse time will tell. Then came the snow and South Derbyshire was very lucky in having very little compared to the other side of the city with over six inches reported. As usual the country descends into chaos and local radio spends a lot of time announcing the cancellations and closures of other happenings. I listen slightly bemused to things being stopped four or five days in advance and I try to remember if when I went to school it was ever closed – and I have say I do not think it was. Of course in today’s health and safety ruled world things are very different. Even if most of the children could walk to school, because a lot of the teachers do not live locally, they might have difficulties getting in. On the farm things have to continue no matter what. Cows have to be milked, fed and bed-

ded come what may, and to contemplate otherwise is not an option. Things take a bit longer and may be more trouble but everything is done everyday. I do have one question though: What happened to Global Warming? I was thinking of writing about the abundance of berries on the hedges which may have suggested that a bad winter was on the way, but this time it seems to have come true. Some of the larger hawthorn hedges are really covered in berries this year and I suppose they will soon be eaten up. We notice on the farm how all wildlife changes its habits in bleak winter weather and becomes much more unafraid of humans in their search for food. On livestock farms there is always a lot of food available for the birds and we are festooned with all sorts and variety of feeding birds. When taking silage out of the maize silo birds are literally a few feet away from the machinery in their desperation to feed. This is where everyone can help and provide something each day for our garden birds and repay them for their songs to come again in the spring. May I wish everyone the best for the festive season.

Visit our shop and Calke Pantry for all your perfect gifts and enjoy a delicious freshly prepared meal in our restaurant. Both are open everyday 10.30am – 4pm and open until 7pm during our festive weekends!

We wish you all a Merry Christmas! Normal Admissions Apply For more information on what’s on at Calke please visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke or telephone 01332 863822

IT was a case of out with the old and in with the new as Rose Boston took over as chairman of the Melbourne Carnival Committee at the recent AGM. Rose has been the secretary since the carnival was re-instated in 2009. Two new members of the committee were elected: Gemma Bettelley as secretary and Rachel Hill coming on board to take charge of the site and stalls. Staying on the committee are: treasurer Ann Williams, Tracey Ridley, organiser of the Miss Melbourne pageant, and Frank Trevena, adding his experience on manning the gates.

The new committee is quickly getting to grips with the organisation of the 2011 carnival and hoping to build and develop on the highly successful format of the past two years. Rose sent out this plea: "We are still one or two people short of a full committee and still on the look-out for new members – in particular we need help to organise the procession.” Rose can be contacted on 07795 362936. The newly elected committee is pictured (l to r) Rose Boston, Rachel Hill, Gemma Bettelley, Tracey Ridley, Ann William and Frank Trevena.

Time to make your mark in politics MELBOURNE residents will be called upon to make vital decisions in 2011, a crucial year for the community as a whole to participate in local elections. Since 1995, there have been no elections for the parish council. Although elections have been called every four years, there have never been enough candidates to fill the full quota of 15 councillors, so those who put themselves up for election are never tested by an actual voting process. The election date is fixed for Thursday May 5. If there are again insufficient candidates resulting in no elections for the parish council in 2011, it will be 20 years without an election when the next opportunity arises in 2015. Councillor Nigel Collyer, Melbourne Parish Council chairman, is well aware that "we should have an election, to validate the good works that the council does". He said that it had been traditional in Melbourne that electors had had a wide choice of candidates to vote for.

"It will be very sad indeed if we do not have an election next May," he said. Councillor Collyer then offered anyone who was interested in standing for the council all the benefit of his experience. "I am sure it is important to have a choice of candidates, and I would very much welcome meeting anyone who wishes to put his or her name up for election, to try to give them as much help and information as I can about how the council works." Councillor Cliff Crawford said that, although he had put up for election in 2007, he was unhappy that he had not had the validation of his membership of the council underwritten by an election. Also on May 5, there will be elections for the South Derbyshire District Council, but at this level of government, Melbourne, with two councillors, has always had an opportunity to vote, in hard-fought elections. The district council has for many years been politicised by both main political parties, and the council is split on national party lines. – DOB

MEMBERS of Melbourne Civic Society met representatives from the parish council and the district council Heritage Officer at the Monument in Castle Square to consider its condition and future. In view of recent publicity about its safety, the Civic Society paid for a structural engineer to be present to give his opinion. It was confirmed that the Monument is structurally stable and the parish council is now moving forward with enquiries regarding the viability of restoring its lighting function. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, the Monument will be fully restored through the welcome co-operation of all interested parties.

ON a cold November evening the Friends of the Parish Church hosted Mark Todd, South Derbyshire’s recently retired MP, to talk about his time in parliament. Mark did not talk about his life as an MP but rather the changing role of a Member of Parliament. He raised and discussed the tricky question 'What is an MP for?' Sixty per cent of his time was spent dealing with constituent issues. There were plenty more thoughtful reflections on that kind of issue and the theme continued with questions from the audience. Iraq was raised and answered very well. The fact that Mr Todd's reason for supporting the war was not the reason his Prime Minister gave for going to war was revealing about one man's honesty in a sea of spin. The same thoughtful consideration was given to another dozen questions. He then stayed for a good half hour talking to individuals and small groups. Pictured (left to right) are Revd David Railton, Mark Todd and Phil Dobby.

Diamond duo still sparkling MAY and Jack Cox of Melbourne have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary. May (nee Smith) and Jack married on November 4, 1950, at Melbourne Parish Church. It was a memorable occasion, not least because on the day, Jack was so ill with flu that he had to be helped to stand for the photos with May and Jack’s mum supporting him on either side. The couple have lived in Melbourne all their married life with Jack spending most of his working life at Breedon Quarry. They have nine children – Mick, Alan, Phil, Tricia, Linda, Sue, Neil, Andrew and Richard. There are also 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren in the family and May has had a full-time job looking after the family and home. Since retiring, Jack has en-

joyed making wooden models and is very proud of his windmill which stands in front of the bungalow where they now live and

also his scale Lancaster bomber. After 60 years of marriage, they are still happy and looking after each other.

THE rain came down pitilessly on the 60 or so Melbourne people who this year came to remember the 11th hour of the 11th day, in the 11th month. Remembrance Day has been kept sacred to the memory of the People's Army ever since the Great War ended in 1918, and that memory now incorporates the fallen of the Second World War and all those of the many smaller conflicts since 1945. It was good to see so many at the Melbourne Cenotaph continuing a 90-year tradition. Brief prayers were offered by the Revd. David Railton, Curate of Melbourne Parish Church. The British Legion, led by President Richard Heath, laid a wreath of poppies, and Richard intoned the ever poignant words of Lawrence Binyon – "they shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old", and the equally touching Kohima Epitaph – "We gave our today for your tomorrow". Brendan O'Neill rendered a faultless Last Post. The ceremony was all over in under 10 minutes, but it was one that had great emotional resonance for those who braved the rain.

THE Burton Breweries Charitable Trust provides grants of up to £2,500 for young people’s organisations to support extra-curricular activities including sport, music, life skills, leadership and self-development projects for those aged 11 to 25. The charity has recently announced the appointment of Keith Norris as chairman. “I’m delighted to be leading this splendid Trust, that is helping so many young people realise their ambitions particularly at a time when funding from other sources is getting tighter,” said Keith Norris, who retired recently as principal and chief executive of Burton College. Founded in 1982, the Burton-based Trust now has an annual income of around £30,000 to award and makes grants to some twenty young people’s organisations each year. Grants, ranging from £500 to £2,500, have recently included play equipment for Ticknall Youth

Adrian Wedgwood, independent Trustee at the Burton Breweries Charitable Trust, said: “Any young people’s organisation that thinks we may be able to help them realise an ambition or train leaders should first look up www.burtonbctrust.co.uk where they’ll find all the information they need”.

fire Service’s resources in the spotlight JOHN Coulton (Group Manager) and Richard Brunt, Area Manager of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, presented the service's consultation plan for 2011-14, offering the chance for residents and councillors to provide feedback and advise on the service's proposed priorities. The budget deficit and coalition government approach to improve the nation's debt burden will see 25% per annum funding reductions. Richard Brunt advised: “£5m is to be wiped off the current £20m Government contribution to the local fire service." In 2009/10 Derbyshire Fire Authority spent more than £40m, split between the Government and Council Tax contributions. John Coulton said: "The proposed cuts have forced the service to really focus and consider its priorities, to look to manage services more efficiently, reviewing the way the service works, how the service responds to emergencies and making the best of its resources." One example was the consideration to charge neighbouring brigades if Derbyshire fire staff were utilised outside the area – “do Derbyshire people really want to pay to put out a fire in Leicestershire and vice versa? ... it would therefore be remiss of us not to look at all our activities and where we could save money”, said Mr Brunt. Commenting on the Fire Service's risk planning approach to emergency support for Melbourne, with Swadlincote now staffed 24 hours a day, and improved redeployment of resources, Mr Coulton claimed there would be no significant degradation in fire support locally. ■ THE first census in England was in 1801 and every 10 years, with the exception of World War Two, the Office of National Statistics has continued to survey the nation. Next March the Census aims to once more have been conducted. “The Royal Mail will be sending questionnaires

STUART BLATCH reports from the November meeting of the Melbourne Area Forum to every household,” said Helen Bralesford, in a change from volunteers posting questionnaires. In 2011 respondents will also be able to complete the census on-line for the first time. The statistics are used by Government, local authorities and services to support allocation of funds, future planning and provision of investments. “Each form completed has a financial value to the local authority, so it’s in all our interests to complete these. Support will be available during the period for residents,” said Helen Bralesford. The data is made publically available via the National Statistics website. Since the Census in 2001, a significant increase in migrant communities has been seen and the population is ageing with 25% more over the age of 85. What will 2011’s Census tell us? ■ CLAIRE Slack, children’s co-ordinator at Etwall, provided a useful insight into South Derbyshire County Council services available primarily to children under the age of five and their families. “Sure Start Children’s Centres are about working together to improve life for families with young children. It’s basically a one-stop shop for local families, with activities like baby massage, baby yoga and sensory rooms, dads’ groups and toy libraries being just some of the highlights,” she said. Seven centres are now located in South Derbyshire and look to provide the best start in life, with aid in access to pre-school education, help in finding childcare, information and advice for parents and carers, counselling, health referrals and family support in the home or community plus links to other organisations such as Job Centre Plus. For more information call 08456 058 058.

Strictly to help you dance THE Kinder Choir plus soloist treated the audience to a truly wonderful concert at Melbourne Parish Church. It was their first visit to Melbourne and indeed to South Derbyshire. None of the young singers had to audition for the choir so it is amazing that such a high standard is achieved under the direction of the wonderful Joyce Ellis, who – with great inspiration – set up the choir 13 years ago, gathering children from schools all over the High Peak district. The variety of music they present is huge, ranging from ballads, musicals and pop such as Amy Winehouse, to Handel and other favourite classics. Winners at the International Eisteddfod 2010, the choir obviously enjoys singing and has a great rapport with Joyce. It is hoped to hear and see them in Melbourne again soon. – Frankie Fagan

HAS 'Strictly' got your feet tapping? Fancy yourself as a ballroom diva? Want to learn to dance? If so get along to Melbourne’s Bill Shone Leisure Centre for some fun and easy social ballroom dance lessons. Anyone hoping to learn to waltz or foxtrot can attend the classes which are held every Thursday starting at 10.30am. The district council, with funding from Arts Council England, is running the sessions, which will cost £2 per person per session. They will be based on the successful classes run by Alan Axon for more than a year in Swadlincote. Alan, a member of the Guild of Professional Teachers of Dance, says: “We are teaching what I call social ballroom, demonstrating to people how to dance in a nice and relaxed way. We specialise in people who have two left feet and even reluctant men. Everyone is welcome to go and learn some new moves.”

MEMBERS of Recreation in Aston say a very ‘warm welcome’ will greet visitors to the Recreation Centre – thanks to the new gas central heating system. County Councillor John Harrison officially ‘lit the boiler’. As part of the modernisation of the centre, the RIA committee decided to invest in gas central heating but there was no gas supply. Councillor Harrison came to the rescue by making a donation from the Derbyshire County Council’s Community Leadership Fund to cover the costs for connecting to the mains supply and also part of the installation costs. An award from Derbyshire Community Foundation helped to pay for the boiler and radiators. RIA treasurer Colin Stewart has worked tirelessly to ensure that work on the project was completed and Ian Farmer has managed the project on a daily basis. Fund-raising will continue to improve and extend the centre.

EIGHT of Calke Abbey's volunteers commemorated 25 years of volunteering by planting a tree each in the park to mark the special occasion. The volunteers joined the Calke Abbey team during the first year that the National Trust took on board the property in 1985. Stewart Alcock, Property Manager, and Bill Cove, Head Warden, joined the volunteers for the planting. The volunteers are pictured at Calke with Jean Brookbank, from Melbourne, in the foreground, planting her tree.

Village Voice December 2010 11

Message from nativity play that went wrong “WHERE do we look for the meaning of Christmas?” asked my colleague Reverend David Railton in last year’s Village Voice. Well, for me, it can perhaps be found in the most unlikely place – a story about a Nativity play that went “wrong”. Jack was a lively but somewhat disruptive pupil. He went on and on to his teacher as Christmas approached about having a part in the school Nativity play. Eventually she relented to the extent of giving him a small part as the innkeeper, who only had one line to learn. He was to say, albeit on three occasions: “I’m sorry Joseph, but there is no room at the inn." Surely there was nothing that could go wrong with that? Come the day of the performance and Jack’s big moment came in front of a hall full of parents. Mary and Joseph arrived in Bethlehem looking for somewhere to stay the night. Joseph knocked on the inn door, and while everyone held their breath, Jack as the innkeeper said loud and clear: “I’m sorry Joseph, but there is no room at the inn." As Joseph continued to plead, this line was repeated successfully a second time,

and the watching teachers began to relax. Then for the third time, Joseph asked: “Please can you find us somewhere. Mary is very tired, we’ve come a long way and she is about to give birth." There was a silence, and if you were close enough you perhaps would have seen a small tear begin to form on Jack’s cheek as he said in a quiet voice: “Oh, all right Joseph, you and Mary can have my room for the night." The innkeeper changed the course of history that night. The nativity play was rescued and put back on track by a teacher. But some people believe that what Jack did that night captured the real meaning of Christmas. He opened his home and his heart to Jesus, born among us to show us how to live in love and concern for each other. And in that spirit, in spite of all the economic uncertainties and difficulties that lie ahead, a happy and blessed Christmas to us all. Reverend Alan Flintham Associate Priest Melbourne Parish Church

SIGHTINGS of Santa have been very rare so far this season but here we see one having exchanged his traditional reindeers and sleigh for a horse and carriage arriving at Staunton Harold Nurseries.

singing out for carollers FOR almost 60 years carols have been sung around Melbourne every Christmas Eve generally by the same group, although over such a long period numbers have fluctuated and faces have changed. At the moment singers are at a premium and in order for this long tradition to continue the group is appealing to anyone interested to join them for what is an enjoyable evening. A similar appeal launched two years ago had a positive response and the group is hoping for repeated interest.

They will meet outside the Baptist Chapel in Chapel Street at 6.45pm on Christmas Eve and sing well known carols around Melbourne before retiring to a house for supper. The group is totally inter-denominational and most years more than £700 is collected for National Children's Homes. If you enjoy singing and fancy a traditional Christmas Eve this year contact Alan Dunnicliff on 862162 / 862188 or just turn up outside the Baptist Chapel at 6.40pm.

Oh boys, what a shopping extravaganza by CLARE BAMPTON WITH snow on the ground, I was in a festive mood as the family and I took a stroll into Melbourne for the Shopping Extravaganza. One of our two-year-old boys was transfixed by Melbourne Town Band and its “lots of different trumpets” and the other one bolted as soon as he saw the BitterSweet Chocolates team – he stood staring at the rather sumptuous stand – I think in the hope that someone would just hand a chocolate over if he waited long enough. Luckily for us, the United Reformed Church offered us a great distraction. The main attraction for the boys was a visit to Father Christmas, whereas I enjoyed the choice of food, bric-a-brac and other stalls. This was the boys’ first Santa meet and greet and it went just as we expected – one wanted to hug him to within an inch of his life and the other started crying and running in the other direction the moment we drew the curtain back. Next was a trip to the Wesley Hall where we were thrilled to discover, amongst other things, free face painting. Two tigers later, the Shopping Extravaganza became a noisier affair as the two boys roared their way through the streets of Melbourne. Several successfully purchased Christmas gifts, the odd go on a tombola stall, a few raffles tickets and coffee later, we decided to call it a day. I really enjoyed the afternoon – there was a lot for the boys to do, a great choice of stalls and a warm atmosphere, despite the temperature. As one Melbourne resident, Emma Connors, said to me: “When I come to events like this, I always think that I’m so lucky to live in Melbourne. There’s really nowhere else like it.”

ST MICHAEL'S Players came again to amuse and educate us at Melbourne's Leisure Centre, for three nights in early November. Da Virgin Code was the title of their new romp – a sort of Melbourne Carry On – and very good it was too. Imaginative, witty and suitably vulgar, treading the same path as Blackadder, and quite able to stand comparison with that TV romp, and just as scatty as the immortal Carry On series. The Players treat people and institutions with meagre respect, and jokes and flak about contemporary Melbourne abound – whether the poor old Melbourne Historical Society, Budgens, Ward's or

their possession but I hope that former players or their relatives will get in touch with me to confirm that I have their name to put in our directory with a small biography. "In our 150 years there must have been well over 1,000 players who have represented the club. I’m also on the hunt for Melbourne cricket photographs of all eras to include in the book.” Finally, the club is trying to trace the descendants of its most famous player, Jim Horsley, who went on to play for Notting-

hamshire and Derbyshire. Jim played for Derbyshire between 1914 and 1925 and sadly passed away in 1976. Andy would like his family if they read this to get in touch with him as the club wants to involve them in the anniversary celebrations. The book will be on sale in April and all the profits will go to the club’s 150th anniversary appeal. Mr Heafield can be contacted via e mail on a.heafield@btinternet.com or by telephoning 01332 865422.

Talking of the high life LUCY Cooper was the speaker for a recent meeting of Breedon on the Hill WI. Lucy gave a very interesting and informative talk on 'Life as a Flight Attendant’, which illustrated that she was much more than a 'flight attendant'. She had qualified and worked as a pilot in the United States before returning to the UK and joining British Airways as Senior Cabin Crew in First Class, meeting and greeting the rich and famous. The meeting was very well attended and everyone left with a better understanding of Lucy's working life. At the AGM Jill Cooper was welcomed onto the committee and, on completion of the business, the committee hosted a Caribbean party. An authentic meal was then provided accompanied by a Caribbean cocktail. The competition for the ‘best dressed’ was won by Claire Philipson – a colourful vision bedecked with fruit. Members Dawn Kinson and Jill Cooper have replanted the flower troughs at either end of the village with winter bedding plants. Grateful thanks must go to Sue Suggitt, of Breedon Priory Garden Centre and Nurseries, who once again donated all the plants.

Tug team hoping to pull in more cash for Heroes THE Kong versus The Wizard sounds like something from a comic book but on Saturday, January 15, this unlikely event will take place in the Royal Suite at Melbourne British Legion Club. Organised by the British Legion Tug of War team, this world class darts evening will feature the Wizard of Oz, and 2009 Championship League winner, Derby-based Colin Osborne, and England International, “The Kong”, Robbie Green. Both players have high profiles in the darts world and have appeared regularly on television. They will play against each other in an exhibition match.

Local residents and joint promoters of the event, Matt McTurk and Paul Gregory, feel this is a great opportunity to see world class darts sportsmen up close. As a bonus, five lucky spectators will also get a chance to play against the professionals by buying a raffle ticket or winning the auction. Doors open at 6pm and all proceeds from the evening will be shared between Help for Heroes and the Legion Tug of War team. Tickets are available from Matt on 07747 533506, Paul 07880 802531 or behind the bar at the Legion.

The lowdown on computer security MELBOURNE Neighbourhood Watch hosted Bimal Jangra, the chairman of DARC Technology, for an enlightening talk on computer security. Bimal, a regular on Radio Derby, provided residents with detailed information on how to protect their computer, with advice on use of free software available on the world-wide web. “Three pieces of software, anti-virus, anti spy ware and a firewall, are essential to protect you from the sinister underworld of viruses such as Trojans that copy your key strokes and to hide your computer from other users,” explained Bimal. A comprehensive question and answers session was backed up with an information leaflet highlighting recommended free software protection available. PC Debbie Croxall followed with answers to local residents’ questions and concerns expressed on police visibility in the area, damage to cars in the main car park and limited CCTV coverage. Parish Cllr David Smith advised that he was more than willing to work with the NHW group in the establishment of improved CCTV for the area and acknowledged the watch group had a role to play in such improvement. NHW chairman Adam Seal provided a timely reminder on doorstep crime – specifically ‘distraction burglaries’ – and expressed the need to be vigilant as 75% of these crimes target the elderly. “Always ask for identification and keep other doors locked, as while you're on the front doorstep, someone just may be entering at the back door." Melbourne NHW now has 300 members, covering 57 streets, ways, roads, avenues and drives in Melbourne and this requires more volunteer co-ordinators to support the expanding group, said Mr Seal. Anyone interested in joining Melbourne’s Neighbourhood Watch community is asked to email melbourneNHW@gmail.com or contact Gail How 01332 865279. – SB

Walk this way ... to Melbourne WILL Melbourne become a "Walkers Welcome" town? Barry Thomas, himself a keen walker and Melbourne Civic Society's Footpath officer, certainly hopes so. "Walkers Welcome" has been embraced by 56 towns and villages, and is a grassroots movement dedicated to extending the joys of walking. Barry writes in the Civic Society newsletter: "Walkers make a considerable input into the local economy, spending money in cafes, pubs and shops - which is why we need to encourage more walkers into the town. It would be great if Melbourne could become a Walkers Welcome town.” www.walkersarewelcome.org.uk is the website of Walkers Welcome and lists 56 member towns and villages all over the country, and quotes the warm approval of Julia Bradbury, of BBC's Countryfile. She writes of a grass roots accreditation scheme for walker friendly towns, "who network together for support, advice and ideas". The membership only requires the support of the local community, and the formal support of the local council. Barry organised a walking festival in Melbourne last September and will be offering a walks programme in May 2011, as part of the National Forest Walking Festival. He is also hoping to finalise a Walking Weekend Festival in late June. ■ The county council footpaths officer for our area is Zoe Woodhouse, who can be contacted at Matlock - email zoe.woodhouse@derbyshire.gov.uk

Cricket club nets a training booster WITH its 150th anniversary in 2011, Melbourne Town Cricket Club members are delighted to have been awarded £500 towards the purchase of a mobile net cage by the East Midlands Airport Community Fund. The fund’s Community Relation Executive Hannah Borkett said: “We are delighted to have donated £500 to Melbourne Town Cricket Club for a Pro Mobile Cricket Cage. The fund supports local projects that have a long-lasting community benefit." The club is determined to develop its playing strength prior to the 2011 season and, in addition to current junior coach Jim Jenkinson, should have four newly qualified coaches by the start of play in April. Joe Lacey, joint manager of the newly formed under 13s team and one of the junior coaches, said: “The net cage will be of great benefit to the club and will be used on most evenings in the run-up to and during the season. The under 13s team is a new venture for the club; we hope to attract juniors who will go on to represent the club at senior level. Only by having the right structure and equipment will the club be able to compete with other clubs and the new net cage will go some way towards that." Players wanting to register for the under 13s team should contact Joe Lacey on 07901 712498. Indoor nets and training sessions with qualified coaches will be starting in January.

ALAN Jervis, of Stanton by Bridge, was delighted when his friend, snooker star Stephen Lee, rang him to say he was travelling to Cumbria and asked if he could drop in on the way. Stephen also asked if he could bring his friend and travelling companion Jimmy White with him. It was no problem for Alan, who immediately contacted some friends and invited them to his home for an evening's snooker with the two top flight professionals. Stephen and Jimmy treated everyone to a couple of exhibition games before partnering up with the others for several games of doubles before continuing their journey. Pictured are Frank Card, Jimmy White, Stephen Lee and host Alan Jervis.

CLIVE Harris, chairman of the Derbyshire County Cricket League, presents Paul Borrington with the First XI batting award at Ticknall Cricket Club’s annual dinner.

Ticknall celebrates successful season TICKNALL Cricket Club held its annual dinner and presentation evening after a successful season which saw the Grange outfit gain promotion to the Derbyshire Premier League and lift the Burton Breweries Cup. Clive Harris, chairman of the Derbyshire County League, was the club's guest speaker and gave an informative and amusing talk, during which he announced his retirement from the county's umpires list. This announcement was greeted with ironic applause from veteran seamer Zach Lucas – something to do with an historic, and iffy, lbw decision. A meal was prepared for the 70 players, members and guests by Jim Demech, also known as 'Maltese Jim'. Club chairman John Dumelow extended his thanks to the Grange ground staff, tea ladies, scorers and the club's many supporters. Notable award winners were Paul Borrington, the Derbyshire batsman, who picked up the club's First XI batting award. The award came after a stunning season in which he scored 1,283 runs in all competitions at an intimidating average of 67.53 with five centuries and a top score of 190. The club's First XI bowling award went to former professional Graham Chamberlain for his 27 wickets at 23.04. Players' Player of the Year was stalwart Jim Meakin, while Clubman of the Year went to Leighton Lucas for his efforts both on and off the pitch.

Chariots on fire for top festival success THE talented players of Melbourne’s U12s rugby squad once again started the season with success. As well as the hosts, the Kesteven Festival brings together some of the renowned clubs in the East Midlands including Market Rasen, Lincoln, Oakham, Nottingham, Melton Mowbray and Newark. Melbourne U12s Chariots cruised into the final with impressive victories over Lincoln, Market Rasen and Kesteven, scoring 10 tries and conceding one. The final pitted them against their rugby nemesis, the five times NLD champions Nottingham, who Melbourne haven’t beaten since ‘contact rugby’ commenced at U9. It was 0-0 at full time so a further seven minutes of extra time were played. The final whistle saw a shared trophy and the huge Melbourne supporter contingent knew that their sons had done them proud. The U12s Chariots attended the Coalville Festival with high hopes of following their success at Kesteven the week before. The first match saw Melbourne take the lead against old adversaries Nottingham, but concerted pressure saw Nottingham record a narrow (but deserved) 5-10 victory. A comfortable 30-0 victory over Notts Moderns and a 10-0 victory against Towcester were followed by a 5-5 draw against Stoke. The third place play-off match with Towcester saw Melbourne win 15 - 5 and take the trophy for their third place finish. Melbourne U12s fielded their two squads for the first time this season, with the development squad [The Chiefs] playing their first fixture of the season against Derby B. The Chiefs started well and stamped their mark on the game with some impressive possession retention skills and excellent runs. Although Derby scored on the final whistle it wasn't enough and the result belonged to Melbourne. "It’s a promising start to the season and rewards the hard work these lads have been

FOREMARK Trout Fishery’s 2010 season was a good one for the hundreds of anglers who enjoyed their sport. The reservoir was well stocked with huge numbers of fish, and the statistics some six weeks or so before the season closed indicated that more than 30,000 trout had been caught with 20,000 returned to the water.

are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our expanding team of putting into training,” said beaming head coach Kevin Brown. The U12s Chariots are proud that Derby have never beaten them in a proper competitive match, and were determined to continue that sequence against Derby A. From the start Melbourne showed a greater quality and technique but half-time came and despite Chariots' dominance the scoreboard showed 0-0. The second half saw Tom Brown use some nifty footwork to power his way over for a score, the only one of the match and a win for the Chariots. Paviors welcomed the Melbourne U12s Chiefs, who were keen to build upon their superb performance of beating Derby B the previous week. Against the run of play, Paviors scored first, which produced a wonderful response from the Chiefs, who ran in 12 unanswered tries. Some of the support play and continuity skills displayed were fantastic, and all players contributed fully in a positive way. To finish off the month of October both U12 teams played Barton under Needwood.

The Chariots battered Barton 40-0 whilst the Chiefs managed a very creditable 10 points to their opponents' 15. Ashby U12s have been Leicestershire champions for the last four seasons and Melbourne coach Kevin Brown was keen to test his talented ‘Chariots’ side against the highest quality of Midlands opposition. Melbourne received the kick-off and a series of insertions saw them deep into Ashby territory, resulting in a try and conversion. This sparked Ashby into life and a score. Melbourne again pressed hard and secured another converted try. Ashby responded well with a converted try only to be matched again by Melbourne. The second half continued with the Chariots dominating possession and taking their score to 28 points. Ashby ended on a positive note squeezing in the corner for a try to take their points to 19. Coach Brown said: "My players have shown great skill today, and our victory was not lucky. Our development squad (The Chiefs) has won at Chesterfield 65-0 today and so this is another great day for the U12s."

SPORT SPORT Happy Wanderers MELBOURNE Wanderers imposed a shock defeat on top-of-thetable Willington at the Recreation Ground with a magnificent 2-1 win. Willington, unbeaten this season, were unable to breech the Wanderers' defence and were given little but long range opportunities. Melbourne scored twice, the first from an early Joseph Shadbolt corner, volleyed in at pace by Matt Askew past the static keeper. The second came from Matt Askew, who rounded the keeper before calmly shooting into the corner. The previous game had seen Melbourne win 2-1 away at Barton Rovers, with goals from Daniel Toon and Niall Worrall. Following some extremely tight games this season the team has now begun to hit its stride and collect deserved points. Promotion is a distinct possibility if such performances are maintained.

run over as dynamoes taste their first defeat MELBOURNE Dynamoes first team had an indifferent time of it in November, losing their long unbeaten run to lowly Holbrook – but progressing to the quarter-finals of the Derbyshire Cup. They began the month at home to Cromford and, despite losing at half-time, came away with a point in a 2-2 draw, an Alex Slater tap-in and a Gaz Anable screamer the Melbourne goals. A disappointing 3-2 home defeat against Holbrook followed, especially after they were leading 2-1 thanks to headers from Carl Allsop and Danny Guild. There was more disappointment three days later as Dynamoes went down by the same score to Long Eaton United Reserves. A double from Alex Slater, with one from the penalty spot, saw Melbourne leading 2-1 with just three minutes to go. But two unstoppable strikes from the home side saw them take the points. The Melbourne team ended the month with a superb 4-3 away win against league leaders Willington in the Derbyshire Cup, which was more impressive as Dynamoes had only 11 fit men available. A brace from Dave Brough plus a Lee Scott strike and an own goal claimed Dynamoes their spot in the quarter-finals. MELBOURNE DYNAMOES RESERVES had a very disappointing month, losing their two games, both of them in cup competitions. At home to Codnor M.W, Melbourne led thanks to a Jack Tivey finish, but failed to hold on and went out of the Derbyshire Junior Cup 2-1. This was followed by a lacklustre display away to Swanick Pentrich Road Reserves, losing 4 -1. The only consolation was a 35 yard screamer from Jack Havron. TICKNALL RANGERS continued their great form and extended

their unbeaten run to nine games. An emphatic 8-0 away thrashing of bottom side New Inn Wanderers came thanks to a hat-trick apiece for strike duo Matt Smart and Alex Slater plus goals for Craig Hall and skipper Kev Earp. This was a result which put Ticknall top of the table. The following week a brace from Matt Smart, the second a last minute extra time equaliser, took Ticknall's cup game to penalties against The Devonshire Arms. It was Rangers who came out on top 5-4 in the shoot-out as Earp, Cook, Archer, Hall and Slater all held their nerve to secure a quarter-final spot. Ticknall ended the month with a 2-2 home draw against Travellers Rest A, an Alex Slater finish and a towering Kev Earp header earning the point. THE BLUEBELL INN began the month with a 4-0 win at home to Brinsley Ox as Mike Bestwick helped himself to a hat-trick, with Rob Vallis getting the other. A week later The Bell lost 2-1 to Ockbrook with the consolation coming from Jack Tivey, and they ended November with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Codnor, with goals from Tivey, Kyle Woolley and Jack Havron earning the point. AFC STREAMLINE won their first game of the season in November with a 2-1 win against Shardlow St James Reserves with Lee Hoyle and Owen Williams grabbing the all-important goals. This was followed by a 7-2 home defeat against AFC Kimberley, Colin Pope and Paul Tebbatt scoring the consolations. Streamline ended the month with a very unlucky 4-3 defeat to Lovell FC with Owen Williams, Colin Pope and Adam Leach getting on the scoresheet.
