INSIDE STORIES

Leisure centre’s future – Page 2

A CRIME and drugs expert from Melbourne is showing an interest in being the county's first ever police commissioner. Steve Spear, of South Street, believes that the election of a Police and Crime Commissioner will better serve communities. The role would replace the present Police Authority and the successful candidate would take office in November. He also believes that, subject to the detailed specifications of the role, it will provide for greater transparency in the working of the police and allow chief constables to be held to account for the service they manage. Mr Spear is not critical of police forces in general or the Derby/shire force in particular. He told Village Voice: “I have always held it in high regard and have found it to be very open to new ideas and initiatives. Many initiatives that are now standard practice across many forces originated in Derby.” With a background of working within the health authority, Mr Spear, who is 60, together with colleagues from other services, recognised the link between health and crime. This resulted in Steve establishing the Drug Action team in Derby, bringing together Health, Police and the Probation service to work as a partnership to reduce re-offending. The programme proved to be very successful and resulted in Mr Spear being seconded to Nottinghamshire Police where he created the Crime and

Drugs Partnership and later the Adult Offending team, initiatives that resulted in a crime reduction of 50 per cent over a five-year period. "The one yardstick for measuring the efficiency of the police and criminal justice system is the absence of crime and anti-social behaviour," he said. " Crime, once committed, needs to be solved and the offender brought to justice – but we need a renewed emphasis on crime prevention, targeting known offenders. The new Commissioner will have to work with the Chief Constable and other agencies to achieve this." Steve (above) believes that the political parties should nominate candidates but those candidates should have the independence to act locally, acting on behalf of the local electorate and not on behalf of their Party. He also believes that the candidate should be selected on the basis of their ability to do the job and not on political patronage.

MELBOURNE'S leisure centre will be marketed with particular emphasis on business use and as a social and community event venue. That was one of the decisions to come out of the long-awaited public meeting to discuss the future of the Bill Shone Leisure Centre under the new management group identified as the directors of the Melbourne Community Centre Ltd. There was a good turnout from the local community to hear what the members of the board had to say about its achievements and aspirations. Each of the current founding directors spoke about different aspects of the plans for the centre. It was confirmed that transfer of the lease and full transfer of managerial control will become effective on April 1, 2012, while the appointment of a new Development Manager to run the facility is imminent. With £125,000 donated by South Derbyshire District Council, the onus is now on the board to pursue opportunities for funding from other sources such as the Lottery Awards For All and Landfill Community Fund.. Changes to the centre will not include alterations to the external features but will concentrate on improvements to the interior with specific regard to heating, lighting, insulation and sound proofing to improve the facilities for the benefit of all users. It was emphasised that current users are important to the ongoing success of the centre

Potential new users will be identified. Residents of Melbourne and the local area were encouraged to participate in the running of the centre by becoming members in return for a small financial contribution. This proposal was viewed by a number of those attending as potentially excluding some members of the community from attending future meetings. This is something that will

need to be reconsidered. The re-branding proposal that a new name, The Melbourne Assembly Rooms, be adopted also failed to meet with a favourable response. In addition to the earlier comments regarding membership fees and a new name for the centre, the directors answered other questions from the public after the presentation was complete. There was an impromptu round of applause from the assembly for the efforts and

achievements to date of the directors. ■ SUBSEQUENT to the public meeting the directors announced that Melbourne Community Centre Ltd. has been successful in obtaining a grant for just under £4,000 from the Local Energy Initiative (LEAF). The object of the grant is to facilitate an energy survey on the Bill Shone Leisure Centre to determine the current status, its energy shortcomings against modern requirements and make specific proposals to address these issues.

Lining up for the run THE ANNUAL Weston Run will be held on Sunday, February 26. The event starts and finishes at the Ukrainian Centre in Westonon-Trent and spectators will be able to watch the runners complete a circuit of the field both at the start and the finish of the race. The races will start promptly at 11am. There are two events – a five-mile road race and a two-mile fun run – with details of both events together with entry forms available on www.107derbyscouts.org.uk. You can enter by post or on the day. This event will generate a contribution towards the running costs of the 107th Derby Scout Group, which caters for young people mainly from the villages of Aston, Weston and Shardlow. Parking, refreshments, toilets and first aid facilities will be available in the start/finish area at the Ukrainian Centre.

Time for tea dances SOUTH Derbyshire District Council has organised a series of tea dances under the title Strictly T 4 2 Tea Dance. Melbourne has been chosen as one of the locations for the dances. Residents are invited to take part in an afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones, cake, tea or coffee and enjoy ballroom and sequence dancing on Thursday, February 23, at Melbourne Leisure Centre. The events are taking place from 23.30pm at a cost of £6 per person. Booking is essential. For more information and to book your place contact Karen on 07720 571268 or Sue on AT 07500116914. MELBOURNE'S MOST POPULAR PARTY VENUE IS AVAILABLE FOR HIRE. Book early to avoid disappointment

Family theme to area’s Diamond Jubilee events QUEEN Victoria celebrated the last Diamond Jubilee in 1897 with “a large family dinner - we dined in the Supper-room, which looked splendid with a buffet covered with the gold plate". This year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations across our locality are going to replicate this family theme, but without the gold plating; the idea being to keep costs down while still having an old fashioned 'knees-up'. Melbourne’s organisers, led by Kate Dumelow, are planning an exciting event on June 2, in Castle Square. It will start at 3.30pm with a children’s street party and entertainment, carrying on into the evening with festivities to suit all tastes. There will be eight local bands performing on a specially erected stage, headlined by the very popular Boys Next Door to dance along to. Whilst it will be a ‘Bring Your Own’ (picnics/tables/chairs) there will be a Hog Roast and Indian food on sale. It is hoped that Lord Ralph will be opening the occasion by unveiling the monument in Castle Square, with the Town Band accompanying. A separate event is also being planned for May 19, for the senior citizens with a nostalgia event put on by Rotary and Inner Wheel. Fund-raisers are being held over the forthcoming months to help foot the bill. Plans are similarly well advanced in KINGS NEWTON, where they have been busy fund-raising for months. The afternoon programme on June 4 will start at 12.30pm with a Fancy Dress Parade from the Scout HQ to Kings Newton Hall, where there will be entertainment for the children. As well as a puppet show, face painting and bouncy castle, there will be a falconry display, archery and music from ‘No Fixed Abode’. The evening’s family entertainment will move to Jackson’s Barn, especially decked out for the occasion. Entertainment will include compere Chris Gee, who will start off the evening, a George Formby Act, evening buffet with table entertainment from Haurel and Lardy, entertainment by the committee and finishing with an excellent band called the Beat Club featuring Beatles hits. Margaret Hagues is

working hard with her committee to pull together all the final details. In TICKNALL, Jeff Collett’s organising committee is planning a family tea party in the village hall, starting at 2pm on June 2 with entertainment and catering for the children. The evening’s entertainment, also in the hall, will be a Country Dance, in fancy dress, with The Ranters leading the dancing. BARROW'S celebrations will also be on June 2 when a street party is planned. They will be having a rock climbing wall, bouncy castle and Sportsmobile stationed in the community park. Barrow Club will be the focus of activities through the day, with a BBQ planned for the evening. Organiser Jill Scarfe said: “Barrow will be busy that day.” In the spirit of keeping costs down, the villagers are busy making red, white and blue bunting from remnants. Both ASTON and WESTON-ON-TRENT organising committees are in the process of finalising their plans. The organisers are planning to give each child a memento of the occasion, with a mug the preferred option in most places. With Victorian Diamond Jubilee mugs now going for £50 and upwards, these might just be worth hanging onto. Full details of all the events will be advertised locally much nearer the time. – Frank Hughes

THE GOVERNMENT has given the go-ahead for the construction of the high speed rail link between London and Birmingham, alias HS2. This will cut a swathe of destruction through some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK and destroy many homes and businesses. Being a very infrequent train traveller I can’t comment on the real need for this project and it seems strange that during the last 50-plus years all that has happened to the rail network is retraction. Surely an update of present facilities needs to be looked into and we could learn a lot from our European neighbours whose train systems have always been well run. Apparently, this service will cut 10 minutes off the journey time between the two cities which seems to be a small step forward for such a massive investment and destruction. ■ Winter has rather flown by this time and, of course, our weather has been a little kinder to us, although as I write this

MELBOURNE Area Transition ran a fun and informative day at a forest garden being newly created at St Bride’s Farmhouse near Melbourne, as part of the National Forest Changing Landscape Scheme. A forest garden is a garden containing edible and other useful trees, shrubs and perennial plants, combined to model natural woodland. Once planted, this type of garden is low-maintenance and highly productive, providing fruit, nuts, herbs, salads, craft materials, timber etc. The fully-booked course provided a great opportunity for attendees to share ideas for their own plots, for the Community Woodland and the Melbourne Schools

at the month end we are experiencing some severe frost. The general trend is, of course – for those who take any notice – that it is still very dry. The further east in the country, the worse it is and there are real concerns that after last year’s drought the potential for a worse situation is very real this coming season. ■ It’s pleasing to see people in the city and district picking up litter along the roads in the area. The sheer quantity of material thrown out of cars is amazing and I do wish we could do something about this. All the legislation and rules that small businesses have to conform to on environmental disposal is very strictly policed so why can’t the same be done for individuals? There seems to be a small number of people who don’t give a damn about the appearance of their local countryside and town and it makes me ashamed to be British.

CCTV scheme finally gets the thumbs-up THE PARISH council stuttered like a classic performance of Ronnie Barker's Arkwright in TV's Open All Hours before finally agreeing to proceed with a CCTV scheme for the town. After a lengthy debate on the benefits of the project the council can now look into closing arguments about the finer details on cameras and locations. The £8,000 scheme will include up to seven cameras which could be to a high definition (HD) standard specification; five could be located centrally in the Market Place and two supporting the area around the Lothian Gardens. Each camera would record on a 24/7 basis and be available to access at the local police station. Chris Smith, manager of the Safer South Derbyshire Partnership, said that the Safer Neighbourhood Fund would provide £2,500, while District and County Cllr John Harrison intends to support with £1,000. This leaves the parish council with partners to find in the order of £4,500. The debate focussed on the primary use of CCTV to obtain a prosecution and being accepted as evidence, with PC Jane Newman confirming: “Yes, absolutely, CCTV is one of a number of tools for catching criminals or anti-social behaviour offenders." As the debate continued, Cllr Brendan Freeman said: “CCTV doesn’t reduce crime, the figures just don’t stack up," whilst Cllr Andrew Jackson suggested that local businesses should help subsidise its installation. Cllr Jane Carroll suggested that installation would potentially drive problems into other areas of the town not covered by CCTV. At this stage a positive vote for its implementation looked uncertain, but Cllr Rose

sTUART BLATCh reports from the February meeting of Melbourne Parish Council

Minifie claimed “it would be completely irresponsible of the council to not support such a scheme”. Adam Seal, chairman of Melbourne NHW, welcomed the initiative and pledged the group's support to help generate funds, while the landlord of the Lamb Inn noted he had 325 signatures from residents supporting CCTV improvements. Chairman Nigel Collyer then put the scheme to the vote, where it was finally agreed to proceed. To emphasise why CCTV can be an important attribute in tackling and supporting crime detection, PC Newman informed the meeting that Melbourne was once again a police priority area in South Derbyshire with youths travelling from surrounding areas into the town. Damage to a number of cars on Victoria Street and Derby Road had been evident in recent weeks and corrosive acid had been poured onto a vehicle in the Castle Mills area, causing over £6,000 of damage. Moving to a further act of criminality, Mrs Eileen Hardy reported that grit from grit bins was being utilised for personal use rather than addressing key road areas over the recent wintry period. Cllr Collyer called for a general public spiritedness in applying grit to road surfaces where required and “hoped this message could be spread, unlike the grit at the moment”.

OTheR PARIsh News ■ Both district and county councils confirm a freeze on their element of Council Tax for 2012/3. ■ Resurfacing of Derby Road is planned before the end of March. ■ Cllr Crawford requested the council looks at where best to locate the Blood Donors team to enable Melbourne residents to use the service. The use of the leisure centre has come to an end following new guidelines on observing people giving blood. The council agreed to explore further. ■ South Derbyshire District Council Summer

Cllr Harrison said labels clearly advising ‘not for personal use’ should be attached to bins. Cllr Harrison also advised that South Derbyshire District Council had agreed a huge commitment to Sports and Leisure for Melbourne allocating within its capital budget £1m to be made available for the proposed £2.5m Melbourne Sporting Partnership (MSP) Recreation Ground redevelopment and a further £125,000 for the refurbishment of the leisure centre. The remaining funds for Cockshut Lane will need to be acquired through the various sporting bodies, associations and Sports England, he said, adding “but it's a great start”. Furthermore, Cllr Harrison advised that the planning committee of the district council had approved the MSP's plans for the development of the land at Cockshut Lane, including the new clubhouse/pavilion, a twotier building with changing rooms downstairs and function room and bar on the upper floor. Cllr Harrison requested the parish council to review the recreation ground as a designated area for the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge. To celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee a campaign has been enacted to permanently protect outdoor space and recreation as a permanent legacy to the monarch. As the recreation ground is in tri-party ownership,

Sports scheme has been provisioned for 2012. ■ Harpurs of Melbourne have notified the parish council that they are considering installing a parking meter in the car parking area to reduce general public use, and allow patrons use of the hotel and its facilities. ■ The target for handing over the leisure centre to Melbourne Community Centre Ltd is now scheduled to be April 1. ■ The council is to arrange a presentation by the Melbourne Area Transition Group at the March meeting.

OBITUARY TERRY JONES 1930 - 2012 TERRY Jones was born in Blanchcroft on October 3, 1930. On leaving school he started work in the market gardens until the very cold winter of 1947, when he said: "That's the last time I'm picking frozen brussels". So he joined the armed forces as a volunteer regular soldier for six years, two of which were spent with two of his brothers on the front line, fighting in the Korean War.

He met his wife, Eunice, in 1953, and married in 1955. They had three sons – Neil, Kim and Tim. Tragically they lost Kim in 1962. Terry captained the darts team at the Liberal Club for many years, and was also a keen pigeon fancier, but more recently kept fancy parakeets. Terry, nicknamed Buster, was a larger-than-life character, recognised by his distinctive whistling. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and neighbours.

Cllr Harrison asked the council to take the lead in engagement with the district council firmly in favour. Cllr Harrison also left the parish council an initial draft one-way road system for Melbourne for their comments and consideration. This will be reviewed by the county council's Highways Committee. Locally, there can be no discussion about roads without raising the Swarkestone Causeway and its load limits. The Highways Agency has agreed to improve signage on the A50 regarding the weight limits to the Causeway, and police – combined with Trading Standards – are keeping a greater surveillance of the area. “If you see overweight lorries, take the details, name of company and registration plate and report it to Trading Standards,” advised PC Newman, who has also been addressing hauliers using fixed penalty notices. During Agenda item 13, Cllr Christopher Howard took the rare and unusual step of publicly criticising a fellow councillor.

Promoting Melbourne PROMOTE Melbourne will hold a meeting on March 7, at the Leisure Centre, starting at 7pm, to which founder Ruth Malloy invites all Melbourne and district business people to attend. She intends that the meeting is for "all business interests, not just retail, to come together, to try to make Melbourne even more successful in this Jubilee year". Ruth told Village Voice: "Melbourne's a lovely town, lovely people, with a great feel to it. It has so many plus points - easy accessibility to four adjacent counties; great access for all businesses; excellent communications to motorways, airport and railway; first rate choice of restaurants and pubs; and a varied retail and service offer. It's a great place for a day out." Ruth has been in business in the town for three years. She was the inspiration behind the Late Night Shopping Event last November, and has been the founding member of

Promote Melbourne. The meeting on March 7 will be an opportunity for local business people to express their views on last year's event and assess

support for a similar event this year. Ruth is a textile technologist and designer by training – her soft furnishing shop, Cream, in Derby Road is testament to her good taste. She is married with a boy of six. Ruth is a great believer in networking promoting the view that local businesses can often do better business on their own doorstep. But she believes that often many local businesses are simply not aware of what opportunities exist in Melbourne and district. That is the reason she believes that the business community can only gain from networking, and helping local businesses speak to each other. On March 7, there will be an introductory presentation by Ruth herself, followed by a talk by Phil Dobby, who will sketch out the strategy that the new management of the leisure centre will adopt to foster local business and enterprise.

Trying to track down engine photo information MELBOURNE Civic Society has acquired a photograph which has been added to its extensive historic photo archive. It shows LMS engine No.7062 and a group of men, most in military uniform. It would appear to be a Second World War picture of a group of Royal Engineers working on the Melbourne Military Railway. On the back is written “G.A.Barlow” and “Melbourne 31.8.41”. Ian Turner, the Civic Society archivist, said: "Nothing is known about G.A.Barlow or the names of any of the men and, of course, it was very unusual for photographs of military sites to be taken in wartime so this may be an ‘official’ photograph. "Hopefully, there are still a number of Melbourne residents who can recall the important activities which took place at this Kings Newton site, and we would love to hear from them and perhaps put some names to the people in the photograph." He can be contacted on 01332 862629 or by emailing him at hian@turnermel.fsnet.co.uk.

Joan and Archie still happy after 70 years JOAN AND Archie Oakden from Barrow on Trent have celebrated their Platinum Wedding Anniversary. It was January 10, 1942, when they tied the knot at St Wilfrid’s Parish Church. Archie lived in Repton and worked at the time for a local builder. Joan lived in Barrow and travelled to work each day on her bicycle to Repton where they met. They both had bikes, the main form of transport between the two villages, and they were put to use every day during their courting – even on Saturday nights when they went dancing in Swadlincote. When they got married they moved to Barrow to live with Joan's parents. Joan's father was the head groom to Colonel Eadie, who lived at Barrow Hall. The wedding reception was held in a room belonging to the Hall and recognised then as being the Village Hall. When the wedding celebrations were over and the happy couple were making their way back to the lodge, a bomb was dropped in a field on the other side of the river and the blast and the shock made them drop the wedding cake they were carrying home. Shortly after their wedding Joan was recruited to work in a clothing factory making underwear for servicemen and Archie became one of the Bevan Boys with instructions to turn up for work at the New Lount Colliery. Joan continued working at the factory until

Keith, the first of their four children, was born. Paul, Peter and Gillian followed before Joan returned to work as a home help for Derbyshire County Council. Archie, having left the mine, started work at Ford and Weston, building contractors in Derby, where he stayed until he retired at 65. Still fit and not ready to put his feet up, he continued to work for some years with his son Paul, who was also a builder. In addition to the family, gardening and an interest in horses have been the main pastimes for couple. They followed the Meynall and Quorn hunts and particularly enjoyed the Boxing Day and New Year's Day events. They have always owned horses and their interest was passed on to Paul and Gillian and Gillian's daughter, Sarah. Archie was a soccer player with the first Repton Casuals team and had trials with Derby and Burton as outside right but he changed to centre forward when he later turned out for Gresley Rovers. The couple still enjoy reasonable health, although they are less mobile nowadays. Archie, 91, attributes his failing legs to his footballing years while Joan, 88, puts hers down to just getting old. However, they were both on song when they attended their 70th anniversary party organised by daughter Gillian, at the Hilton Hotel together with 90 guests. It was a really great occasion at which the Revd Tony Luke sang and played guitar. ● JOHN and Pauline Bexon (left) celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on January 27 with a family meal at the Ferrers Arms at Lount. They first met at Little Eaton Wakes in 1959 and enjoyed two years' courtship before getting married. John, better known as Sid, worked for O J Hatton for 34 years followed by 11 years at Dunnicliff ’s in Melbourne while Pauline worked at the mushroom farm. They have three children, Christine, Sylvia and Paul, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

BREEDON On The Hill has not seen any significant housing development for more than 15 years, but there are now two large plots to consider, designed by very influential developers. The Limes development plans have been officially approved by officers at North West Leicestershire District Council and will see nine large houses built on conservation land. The second development by Richard Blunt on Brookside Paddock is to be decided by the planning committee at NWLDC this month. The parish council opposition to these developments has been registered. ■ The Green is going to get a makeover throughout this summer. The war memorial has been painted and the memorial trees trimmed. The parish council will continue to fence along the side to help stop the parking and will also change the triangle area for something more appealing. Some residents have offered practical support for the makeover, while it is also hoped to have planters in place alongside the benches on the fishpool before the Diamond Jubilee celebrations take place there on June 3. Volunteers to help with watering/planting or weeding should contact the parish clerk. ■ The parish council continues to support the parish forum with its endeavours and looks forward to creating a huge celebration for the Diamond Jubilee. A street party on the green is to be held Sunday, June 3, with music, entertainment, bar, food, tug o'war, kids entertainment and general merriment for the whole village. It is hoped that residents will continue to guide and support the members of the forum/parish council to make this a year to remember in Breedon. ■ Parish council meetings are now very well attended and residents are encouraged to support improvements to the parish. Meetings are on the first Monday of the month and all information can be found on the website breedononthehill.leicestershireparishcouncils.

John’s birthday trek for Air Ambulance IN MAY, Melbourne resident, John Burney will undertake a gruelling 75-mile trek to mark his 75th birthday and to raise money for the Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA). John (pictured above, centre) said: “I was looking for a way to celebrate my 75th birthday whilst at the same time supporting our local Air Ambulance and I realised the three counties covered by the Air Ambulance would be a good basis for a walk and I‘m now in training to be ready for the challenge.” John added: “It only takes our helicopter 15 minutes to get from its East Midlands base to Rutland but it might take me a little bit longer.” ■ GRISELDA Kerr will give a lecture entitled 'The Garden Awakens'' on Saturday, March 24, at St. Mary's Church Hall (behind the Catholic Church), Church Street, Melbourne, from 10.15am to noon with a a light lunch at the end. Fair Traders in area

● A PAMPER Day in aid of the Nightingale Macmillan Unit Derby was held in Melbourne's RBL Royal Suite on January 28. At the event, organised by Elaine Dunnicliff, a group of therapists volunteered their time and skills to give clients a taster of their individual therapies. With support from members of the Melbourne Ease Your Mind group the sum of £216 was raised. Elaine would like to thank the therapists and members of Ease Your Mind for their contributions in making the event a success. Pictured (l-r) are the therapists Jenny Williams, John and Kay Bentley, Sharran Miller, Justine Walker and Andrew Solecki. ■ EASE YOUR Mind will be celebrating its first anniversary on February 17 with a coffee morning and table top sale at the Thomas Cook Memorial Hall between 10am and 1pm. All are welcome to attend.

A MEETING of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) was held in the Melbourne area on January 19 and 20 at the Park Farmhouse Hotel. BAFTS is a national umbrella organisation for independent fair trade shops and fair trade importers with members all over the country. Christine Lee, of the Fair Trading Place in Melbourne, is on the national board of BAFTS, which works in a variety of ways to promote the fair trade message. Christine said: “It was good to bring the organisation to the area. The meeting was busy and wide-ranging but always focussed on the difference that fair trade can make in the lives of disadvantaged producers in developing countries.” ■ THE INAUGURAL meeting of the Melbourne Footpaths Group was held in late January. A management committee was elected consisting of chairman Paul Sturges, secretary Barry Thomas and treasurer Stuart Mansfield. Nine members volunteered to walk every public footpath in the parish and to report back at the February meeting of any problems. The aim of the group is improve the quality of the local network so that it is considered to be the finest in the county, so encouraging more visitors and walking groups to visit the area. The group also aims to produce a noticeboard showing all local paths and to way-mark two or three interesting circular walks in the locality.

Noise concerns for sports project THE FINAL act of a long saga took place on February 7 when the Planning Committee of South Derbyshire District Council met to consider the detailed application for Melbourne's new sports facilities which will be built over the next few years. Although supported by the Melbourne Parish Council and Melbourne Civic Society, there were a number of telling concerns raised by local residents in houses adjacent to the new de-

velopment, particularly to do with noise and light pollution from floodlighting when the site becomes fully operational, and concerns regarding access onto the very busy Cockshut Lane. In their assessment, the planners have laid down a total of 27 conditions which are to be adopted when the scheme is complete. These include an insistence that wheel cleaning facilities should be in place to reduce soil pollution on Cockshut Lane, and adequately splayed en-

tries and exits to ensure good visibility be provided for the site. Parking will be made available for 201 cars, with space for mini buses and cycles. To control light pollution to neighbouring homes, no floodlights or use of pitches will be allowed after 9.30pm or before 8am. The lighting will be controlled to the best current lighting technology, and will be strictly monitored to minimise light nuisance to neighbours.

The tennis courts must be used solely for tennis. The planners also insist that the whole scheme is constructed in accordance with specifications agreed with the national sporting bodies – the RFU, the FA, the Cricket Board, Bowls England and the Lawn Tennis Association. The matter of a footpath across the site – footpath 18 on the Derbyshire Definitive map – will be subject to discussion with the County Environmental services.

The plans are certainly highly ambitious: Two football pitches, a mini-football pitch, and an all-weather floodlit pitch, three rugby pitches (one floodlit), a rugby training area, two cricket squares, a cricket net area, three tennis courts, a bowling green, and a children's play area. The pavilion with solar panels – and an approved crime prevention – will provide both the sporting and social heart for the Melbourne Sporting Partnership.

Big bell day for the town

www.ashfarmkennels.co.uk

MELBOURNE Parish Church is to host the 2012 National Twelve Bell Striking Competition in June. The competition takes place each year when top teams of bellringers compete for the Taylor Trophy, awarded to the best performance of a set piece of ringing without hesitation, repetition or deviation. Initially there will be eliminator heats held up and down the country in March, with the finals of the competition taking place in June. In the past the finals have been hosted by famous twelve-bell towers including St Paul's Cathedral, York Minster, Worcester Cathedral, St Mary le Bow, Southwark Cathedral etc and now Melbourne's bid to

host the finals in 2012 has been successful. A team based at Melbourne has competed in the competition each year since 1997. They have reached the finals six times, and notably came fourth at St Paul's Cathedral in 2009. The tenor (largest bell) at St Paul's weighs over three tons compared with the parish church tenor at three-quarters of a ton, so it was no mean feat to be ranked so high in the finals. Twenty teams have entered this year's competition and will ring at the churches of Aston, Kidderminster and Stourbridge on Saturday, March 24. The top three bands from each of those churches plus the home team will come to

the final at Melbourne on Saturday, June 23. The population of Melbourne will be swelled over the weekend with 120 ringers taking part accompanied by their families and supporters, together with stewards and judges, all of whom will require nourishment throughout the day until the results are announced after a short service in the late afternoon. It is very likely that national television will cover the event. The church will have to be closed while the competition takes place, but it is hoped that a great many local people will go to listen at some time during the day and join in the festivities. – Ruth Smith

town to host Oz Welsh choir MELBOURNE Male Voice Choir is to host a visit by the Australian Welsh Male Choir on Wednesday, March 21. This visit has special significance for the residents of both Melbourne, Derbyshire, and the city of Melbourne since the latter was named in 1837 after the British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne whose seat was Melbourne Hall in Derbyshire. The Australian Welsh Male Choir will tour the UK and participate in a 1,000-voice concert in Manchester. It has over three decades of musical heritage and during that time has performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London on a number of occasions and at the Sydney Opera House. The choir has also performed on television, at many locations around Victoria interstate and toured in the United Kingdom. The choir comprises of a group of men who share a passion for their music with an age span of more than 60 years – from 20 to 84. The choir performs songs in six different languages but mainly in English and in what they call the ‘language of the Angels’ – Welsh. Included in its repertoire are hymns, folk songs, spirituals, opera and music from stage shows. During the visit to Melbourne both choirs will have lunch at the John Thompson before visiting local sites of interest. A highlight will be a reception at Melbourne Hall by kind permission of Lord Ralph Kerr, president of Melbourne Male Voice Choir. The culmination of the visit will be a concert in the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Mercy and St Philip Neri in Church Street, during which the Australian Welsh Male Choir, under the direction of their musical director, Anne M Credlin, and Melbourne Male Voice Choir under the direction of their musical director, Jan Bellinger, will perform a wide range of choral music. Tickets for this unique concert (£7) are available from 01332 862877 or 01530 413921.

by FRANK HUGHES REMEMBER your 21st birthday? Melbourne-based Bryony Balen celebrated hers with a new pair of boots and a cake – ordered by Mum 10,000 miles away. Bryony was on a 700-mile trek to the South Pole to become the youngest Briton to ski from coast to Pole. She is a remarkable and inspirational young woman yet, chatting over a cup of hot chocolate, she is very modest about her achievements. As if skiing up to 34 kms per day in biting temperatures of minus 40, climbing over 2,800 metres, while pulling a sled of 60 kilos, was not enough she had to deal with illness, “polar thigh” (a mild frostbite,) losing members of the team, “whiteout” days of limited visibility, sastrugis (wind created piles of snow,) and worn out boots after only a few days. Her reward for a day’s endeavour? A dinner of re-hydrated ‘sweet and sour’ and rice-porridge for breakfast. As she recounted her adventure she made it sound as if she was out for a stroll on a chilly day, saying “we were very lucky with the weather” – as if she had been no further than Buxton. What inspired the adventure? Bryony mentioned three key events. First was a book gifted from her grandmother about the first female explorer to the South Pole: “she was not fit, and smoked 20 a day so I thought if she could do it I certainly could give it a try". Then, after climbing Mont Blanc she was joking with friends and thought a South Pole trip “a cool idea". Finally, she was told it was unlikely for a young girl, like herself, to successfully endure such a journey. That set her determination rock solid and she decided to make her dream a reality. Over the next three years Bryony got herself into peak physical shape – building up her weight sufficiently and developing both stamina and experience. She had to research and buy all her equipment at the same time as fundraising the £45K she needed for the trip. She was determined not to draw on

the Bank of Mum and Dad, “just because she’d had this crackpot idea”... but to resource it herself. She was generously supported by a range of sponsors, both for equipment and fitness – mentioning in particular the backing she had from Icke Fitness, Wilson, for their free training and advice. Of the six on her expedition team only three made it to the Pole. Two had to be evacuated out and, while this was a low point of the trip, Bryony took confidence from the strength she had shown as the youngest in the party supporting others through difficult times. When they were down to four, one of

the guides transferred to another expedition, leaving Bryony, guide Lisa and fellow trekker Bob Douglas to finish the trip. The original hope had been to get to the Pole by December 14 for the centenary of the Amundsen expedition but that schedule proved wholly impractical and unachievable. Days of 24 hour sunlight played havoc with her body clock, but Bryony said she was able to get by on six hours sleep. Bizarrely, the heat of the sun on her tent meant that it could reach a sizzling 20-plus degrees C inside the tent, while

outside it remained sunny but well below freezing. Reaching the South Pole itself followed a non-stop 15 hour ski effort, and standing at the ceremonial landmark was a massive highlight. The team celebrated with Champagne and the creature comforts of a visitor tent, set up to accommodate 200 visitors flown to the centenary celebrations days earlier. Bryony said she nearly collapsed from the heat in the Amundsen Scott Exploration Station, before taking some well deserved rest and recuperation ... and her first shower for nearly two

months. The journey home was an adventure in itself as there was no scheduled flight from base camp to Chile, so she was thrilled and delighted to eventually board the BA flight to Heathrow – especially when she was generously upgraded. Waiting at the barrier were her boyfriend, Dad and Mum ... with a flask of hot tea. What’s next? It is still very early for her to make plans other than get a temporary job, regain her weight, and finish her geography degree in Newcastle next year – but she did mention the

North Pole! Hearing Bryony’s adventure is both jaw-dropping and uplifting in equal measure. It is a tale of resilience, courage and passion. She is planning local talks so you will have the chance to hear it for yourself and is still seeking sponsorship, so if you can help please visit her website: southpoleadventure.com. And, should you be planning a similar trip, Bryony’s tip is take a feather down and air mattress – 7cms of luxury to help you get a decent sleep in the Antarctic.

Social history via a football team IT MAY not have been 1s 6d to get in, with a hot beef drink at the interval, or standing on the terraces, but Ticknall Village Hall was transformed on a Friday night in January into the home ground of football’s legendary Steeple Sinderby Wanderers. It couldn’t happen now, but way back then dreams were made of amateur football clubs reaching the famous Wembley twin towers, overcoming on the way the mighty Leeds or Manchester United. Kit man Joe Gidner tells the story of his team perfecting Hungarian Dr Kasooth’s revolutionary football tactics to first over-

come local rivals Barchester Town and then go on to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in extra time of an FA Cup final. The performance, by Mark Jardine, was highly memorable. He flicked comfortably around a dozen or so characters, from the Napoleonic chairman, Mr Fangfoss – “very rich with 700 acres of prime land and two wives” – to the busty Winnie Montague, with precision and credibility. He brought the characters to life through his lively narrative, recreating on-field action in convincing slow motion replay. The audience were totally captivated by this one-

man show from the New Perspectives Theatre Company – an adaptation by Paul Hodson of J L Carr’s novel. The lighting and well synchronised sound effects supported a delightfully simple goalmouth stage, offset with a huge backdrop of the Fens. The story is a social history of Britain, of local village power and division told through the loves, losses and triumphs of a rural football team – so perhaps it is no surprise that it struck a chord with the Ticknall audience. Watch out for the next production at Ticknall – it will definitely be a “must see”. – FH

Annual ploughing match helps dig deep for charity

FARMERS Ted and Viv Halifield from Woodside Farm in Ticknall hosted the fifth annual ploughing match in aid of ‘Cancer Research’ on Sunday, January 29. The event was organised by Steve and Judith Webster, family and friends and successfully raised over £1,000 for the charity. With 87 ploughmen and women competing on the day, it was an event full of spectacular vintage, classic tractors and machinery. The weather was certainly chilly but the match was well attended. The ploughing match is a great family day out even though it may be a bit nippy in the January weather but visitor numbers were high and people had travelled from as far afield as Yorkshire, Wales and Shropshire to compete in the match, which also attracted local farmers and enthusiasts. Competitors ranged from complete novices to current European World class ploughing champions. The match had a good feel about it, and Melbourne and district can boast to having some really good local talent. Young and old competed to plough the last furrow and obtain the maximum points to win best in class. The ground was a mix of medium loam and in some parts a bit sticky going, but all ploughmen and women made an excellent job and the judges had their work cut out awarding winners in the friendly family match. Raffle tickets sold out quickly as folk dug deep into their pockets to support the event. It's great to see even in these times of recession the kindness and generosity of competitors and visitors as they supported the charity event. The Webster family and friends all pulled together to make the day a success. As Steve Webster rightly asserted when announcing not only the winning raffle tickets but winners of the match: “It would be nothing without the ploughmen and women – they’re the ones who make it!” Next year's event is already being planned, although – due to the rotation of crops – another location is being sought for the event. – V. Musson

Gondoliers on move ... MELBOURNE Operatic Society is moving its full production of this year's Gilbert and Sullivan operetta 'The Gondoliers' to the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. Transport from Melbourne and Castle Donington will be available with details to be announced soon. However, for those who do not wish to travel to Long Eaton, a concert version of 'The Gondoliers' will be performed at Melbourne Leisure Centre on Wednesday, April 4. The Society's Christmas concert held at Melbourne in December was a very successful

and enjoyable occasion with audience and society members all in fine voice. The Melbourne concert saw the first use of the new staging at the Leisure Centre and was very well received by both the audience and the singers. Indeed, the Society's conductor and general musical director, Keith Reaveley, was delighted to be able to see the gentlemen of the choir and all agreed the staging provided an improvement in both the music and the appearance of the singers – everyone could see them all!

... as is the town walk THE MELBOURNE Early Birds Walk from the school gates on Wednesday mornings has changed the start time and location to encourage more people in the local community to take part. The renamed Melbourne 'Walks for Health' now start at the Melbourne Leisure Centre at 1pm on Wednesday afternoons. They will take about an hour and finish at the tea rooms.

The walks are suitable for all levels of fitness and are a new addition to the Get Active in The Forest walking scheme and suitable for little ones in their pushchairs. They are a gentle way of getting back into exercise and are led by two trained walk leaders, allowing everyone to walk at their own pace. It’s a great way of making new friends, while keeping fit and – best of all – it’s free.

Getting Calke all set for its new year by FRANK HUGHES A STROLL through Calke on a crisp January morning, with the car park deserted and only dog walkers and wildlife for company, is a rare pleasure. For Stewart Alcock, National Trust’s property manager, this is his daily commute and, as he put it, “a great way to start the working day". Hidden away in the maze of the House, behind foreboding studded doors, Stewart and his administrative team studiously plan how best to keep the property maintained, attractive and developing. While there is a small army of over 300 volunteers to help, the management work is done by the equivalent of 30 full-time staff. As well as the visitor facilities, there are 240 hectares of land, farming tenants, small businesses, suppliers, contractors and 20 cottages to look after. An increasingly important part of Stewart’s role, not only at Calke but across his wider East Midlands region, is to open up the National Trust estates to the wider community. In contrast with the past, the estate gates are now open all year (except Christmas Day); the shop and café are available all week, and, from late February, the House is extending opening from five to seven days, with many more themed tours available. Stewart is keen to promote involvement in the estate’s varied resources by local groups, including Melbourne Festival, the Carnival, schools and voluntary groups. Much of the current focus is on the site’s industrial heritage – work has been completed on improving and stabilising paths around the Lime Yards to make them more accessible, informative and enjoyable. An exciting new venture will open up the Ticknall Tramway route; much of it will be finished this year but by summer 2013 a five-mile walking circuit, with links to neighbouring Staunton Harold and Dimminsdale, will be available. The tramway, last used in 1905, was built hidden from view of the House, to transport burned lime away and to carry back charcoal for the kilns. A completed venture on the estate has been the refurbishment of the Riding School to make it available for events and hire. With the

● Calke General Manager Stewart Alcock (right) with Steve Lathaen, Calke’s catering manager. installation of a new woodchip boiler on the estate, making the visitor area more self-sufficient in fuel, the Riding School now features underfloor heating to make it useable all year round. The hope is that local groups, businesses and community will want to use the facility as a venue, with the possibility of a festival concert there later in the year. The Calke team is busy preparing a full programme of events for 2012. In addition to regular features, such as Fine Food Fairs, Craft Fairs, Kite Flying day, workshops and outdoor cinema screenings (in conjunction with the Quad, Derby) there will be a Horse Event to coincide with the run-up to the Olympics. Nearly a quarter of the 100.000 visitors to Calke come from local villages and surroundings, and, on average, visit at least twice a year. Much more of the house is now opened up to the public to tell its story of a ‘Stately Home in decline’ and a new interactive website enabling a virtual tour of the property will help plan any visit. The National Trust, a charity with more than four million members, is seeking ways to involve us and whether you are visiting, interested in volunteering or just want to give your views, a good place to start is the website, www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke

ANNUAL

PARISH MEETING Bill Shone Leisure Centre High Street, Melbourne Tuesday 6th March, 2012 at 7.30pm ALL WELCOME.

Celebrating 90 years of staunton harold Wi STAUNTON Harold Women’s Institute was founded in 1922 by Countess Ferrers, wife of the 11th Earl. It is believed the first meeting was held at their home, Staunton Harold Hall. Ninety years later, members, family and friends returned to the Hall to celebrate their special birthday. They were joined by Nancy Hawksworth, county chairman, and representatives from the Harpur Crewe group of WIs. Welcome drinks and canapés were enjoyed in the entrance hall with beautiful background music provided by Julie O’Dowd and her children, Mathew and Christina. They played the piano, violin and clarinet. This was followed by a delicious traditional Sunday lunch served by Jane Mansfield of the Lyric Rooms, Ashby. Sue Bown, president, paid tribute to two

long-serving members. Annie Gidlow was recognised for 48 years service on the committee. She has been a member since 1957 and has been secretary, president on more than one occasion, and has held county positions including chairman. Nancy Hawksworth talked about Annie’s dedication, hard work and for the help she has given Nancy in her role as county chairman. Mary Messer’s long service was also celebrated. She has been a member for 70 years and is also a past president. Mary has made some brilliant contributions to the entertainment provided by the WI and has always been a good sport. Mary had the honour of cutting the birthday cake. County chairman Nancy spoke about the value of the WI and was pleased Staunton Harold is still part of the Derbyshire Federation. During the war years Staunton trans-

ferred to Derbyshire due to travel difficulties and never moved back to Leicestershire. The after dinner entertainment, provided by a group of youth members from the Little Theatre Company in Burton, was excellent. They sang a variety of songs from the shows, many of them toe tapping and sing along. Their choice to end on was a fitting tribute to the WI and the only one possible – Jerusalem. Members rose to their feet and sang with gusto. The efforts and hard work of Sue Bown and her committee were recognised and appreciated by everyone. They organised a superb celebration in the most appropriate venue, which made a memorable day for all. Here’s to the next 10 years of Staunton Harold WI when they hope to celebrate their centenary. - J Peters

Village Voice Postbag Record collection from the Santa Sleigh A BIG “Thank You” from Melbourne Rotary Club to everyone who supported our fund-raising over the Christmas period, using Santa’s Sleigh. We are delighted to announce a record collection, totalling £1,448, from the evening collections around the streets of Melbourne and Ticknall, with a further £91 during the Christmas shopping event. The Rotary Club received help with the sleigh from a number of non-members, to whom we are most grateful. In addition, a best-ever attendance at the Carols Around the Christmas Tree raised another record amount - £220 - making a total of £1,759 to be distributed to local charities and worthy causes. Thanks are due to Melbourne Town Band; the U.R.C. Choir; the children of the Joint Pre-School Playgroups, whose carol singing really made the evening special; and particularly to the Methodist Church, who opened their doors for coffee and mince pies afterwards. One additional word of thanks, often forgotten, to the Parish Council, for providing and decorating the tree, and all the Christmas lights, which looked particularly good this year. John Burney, for Melbourne Rotary Club.

Have you got a Hair’s Brewery beer mat? I AM A collector of beermats and have been for 50 years. I have recently become aware of a long defunct brewery that issued beer mats and within a short distance of where I live. Hair’s Brewery was on Church Street, Melbourne, and had the one pub, The Barm Tub. I know that the brewery issued two beer mats but I have never obtained any for my collection and would like to rectify this situation. I know that the mats are going to be very hard to find, but I’m hoping that someone in the area of Melbourne has kept one in a drawer or cupboard and forgotten about it for 50 years! They may have other mats as well. I would also be interested to hear from anyone who remembers having a pint in the tiny pub that was attached to the brewery and to hear about their memories of what it was like inside. I’m also sure that the Melbourne Historical Research Group would be interested in any memories. I hope you can print this letter in your local Village Voice in order to reach as many people as possible. I’ve also left an advert in the Melbourne News in the hope that someone passing reads it and can help. I enclose a picture of a one sided mat and I believe there is also a two-sided mat. I understand that the brewery was bought out by Offilers, another Derbyshire Brewery, in 1954. There are lots of older mats that are being found so I am hopeful that these can be as well. Roger Summers. 01952 273653.

Thanks for helping at the Scout building I WANT to pass on thanks from the Scout and Guide Building Committee to Colin Wakefield, of Breedon Carpet Care, who kindly cleaned the carpets in the Scout and Guide building for free. Also a big thank you to Blatch's, who fitted our new oven for free. We really appreciate help from the Melbourne community to enable the Scouts and Guides Building Committee and all the Leaders to continue to provide a safe and well equipped building for the children and young people to use. Thanks again, Nicky Crosbie Secretary to the Scout and Guide Building Committee.

For mothers everywhere THE MELBOURNE Festival team is off to a good start with a Mother’s Day special – Ten Poems about Mothers. Talk Talk Join The club NATIONAL company, Talk Talk, are the talk of Melbourne cricket as they are the latest sponsor to become associated with the club. Club captain Alex Slater was the driving force behind the sponsorship and believes the financial support from Talk Talk will enable the club to further develop the facilities at the Cockshut Lane ground. "The club has set playing targets for the forthcoming season and we will have to invest in the on site facilities at the ground. We have decided to do this sooner rather than later and the sponsorship from Talk Talk will enable us to do this," Alex said. A grant from Derbyshire County Council has also been received for junior coaching and development schemes planned for this season which includes winter coaching at Chellaston School and the coaching scheme in conjunction with Melbourne Junior School. Club coach Julian Humpidge told Village Voice: "Having set tar-

gets for the teams and individual players, the whole club has a great opportunity to develop and this money will help us coach the next generation of senior players at the club." ■ CHARTERED Accountants and Business Advisers McGregors Corporate have announced a new sponsorship deal with Melbourne Rugby Club. Nick Brown, MRFC chairman, said: “We currently have over 40 coaches at the club and are delighted that McGregors have provided further financial assistance to help us to continually improve the facilities and coaching we can provide.” Phil Cudworth, director of McGregors Corporate, said: “As an appointed Probiz Accountant our goal is to focus on helping sports clubs and their membership provide a service to their community, whilst at the same time raising awareness of our advisory solutions which have the potential to reduce tax liabilities."

● THE KINGS Newton Bowls Club annual presentation and prize giving was held at the club and the occasion was well attended. A buffet supper was enjoyed by those attending and club member Mike Alexander was invited to present the trophies. The Revd Alexander, a former vicar at the parish church of St George, Ticknall, was due to retire at the end of the year and move to Northumberland and this was a parting gesture. He also picked up a few trophies for himself. The trophy winners are pictured on the green with their trophies. The club Champion of Champions trophy for 2011 went to Terry Summerlin.

Jamie strikes gold again JAMIE Spencer-Pickup's hunt for gold moved on to the Midlands Open Judo competition at the University of Walsall. And, after fighting his way through the early rounds, the Melbourne youngster found himself in the final, which started extremely cautiously with the fighters testing each other's strength and speed. Suddenly, Jamie’s opponent attacked but was off balance, giving the Trent College student the opportunity to counter attack with a massive foot sweep – 10 points and the Under 42kg Midlands Crown. It was a hard fought win to add to his recent National title.

Stringer, Howard hat-tricks make it a super start to 2012 THE FIRST game for Melbourne RFC of 2012 saw the arrival of Worksop at Cockshut Lane. Melbourne were nearly at full strength, but took a while to find their stride after missing two Saturdays and a few weeks of training. Early turnovers against Melbourne, missed opportunities and handling errors were a feature of the whole game, but Melbourne still scored eight tries. Three were scored in the first half. A lineout ball was won and the ball passed to Ash Stringer, who broke through before providing the pass for Tom Howard to score. Next was a score for winger Dale Bilson, following a scrum on the half way line. Ben Burchell picked up, passed to the scrum half, and quick ball saw Dale score in the corner. The final try resulted from a turnover, with Tom Howard and Matt Smith linking well, Matt providing the scoring pass for Stringer to score under the posts. Euan Holden converted to make the score 17-0 at half-time. The second half started a bit brighter and Melbourne scored after three minutes. Another midfield scrum saw good hand on the left side of the

pitch and Howard scored his second. Another midfield scrum saw the ball go right. Holden switched play to the left, and good hands again saw Howard score to complete his hat-trick. Melbourne scored a further three tries in the last 10 minutes. A turnover ball saw Will Judge run strong, before providing the scoring pass to Stringer. Jake Watts scored the next, running in from the halfway line and thus denying the backs all the tries. Stringer completed the scoring and secured his hat-trick. Worksop ran a quick penalty on the halfway line, but the pass was intercepted by Stringer, who raced away to score in the corner. Holden converted three in total, with the final result 46-0. Melbourne next travelled to Mellish and scored three tries in the first half to lead 26-6 at halftime. However, the second half was a different matter. Three tries in the first five minutes secured the bonus point, and Melbourne scored 50 unanswered ponts to win 76-6. Tries from Dale Bilson (3), Ash Stringer (2), Will Judge (2), Tom Swainston (2), Matt Smith, Tom Howard, and Jack Fisher with Euan Holden scoring 16 points

with the boot. The final game of January saw the arrival of promotion-chasing Lincoln. The match ball was sponsored by Bavistar Events. Melbourne scored the first three points with a penalty from Euan Holden, but soon found themselves 24-3 down after some great play from Lincoln. Instead of heads going down, Melbourne just cut out the mistakes that saw them concede three tries and started to reduce the deficit. First up a sharp break from Tom Swainston resulted in a try. Then Ash Stringer finished off a run that started on the halfway line. Three kicks from Holden saw the half-time score at 24-20 to Lincoln. The second half was a tense affair, with the lead changing hands twice. Melbourne went ahead with a smartly taken try from Jack Fisher, only for the Lincoln fly-half to score and make the score 31-27. Fish was instrumental in the final try, again making a fine break and popping the ball off to Rob Hollingsworth to score, and Melbourne then held out for the final 10 minutes for a bonus point 32-31 victory. THE SECONDS started off the year with a trip

to Worksop Seconds and were beaten 31-7 by a ‘bigger pack’. Sean Moran scored the only try with Dean Sylvester converting it. The second team then played Notts Casuals 3rds and this time returned with a 31-17 win. Tries from Alex Hollingsworth, Will Weeds, Sean Moran and Jordan Sparkes (2) with Alex and Dean sharing the kicking duties. Next came a Derbyshire Cup quarter-final against Glossop. With the Vets also playing, Steve was robbed of some experience and his side narrowly lost 15-17, with tries from Will Weeds, Tom Line and Rob Foster. THE VETS travelled to Ashby for a friendly, keen to avenge the earlier season one point defeat. Playing into a strong wind, Melbourne controlled the ball in the first half with their support play being far superior to Ashby’s. They led 17-0 at half-time with tries from Matt Pipes, Rich Ireland and Little Watty. The second half was a poor comparison after the game went to uncontested scrummaging and Melbourne scored one further try from Gavin. Dean converted two tries and Melbourne won the game 24-0.

Youngsters going for cup glory FOLLOWING the Christmas break, Melbourne RFC U15 resumed their NLD campaign with a convincing 43-5 victory against local rivals West Bridgford. In windy conditions, Melbourne struggled to impose themselves against a strong Bridgford team but their strength in the loose and speed in the backs eventually told and tries by Will Allman (3), Sam Hollaway, Sam James, Matt Lamin and Matthew Watts sealed their semi-final place. Success on the pitch has led to representative recognition with three of the boys, Will Allman, Ben Kirby and Matt Lamin, now attending the Leciester Tigers Academy. Ian Watts, the team coach, said: "The Melbourne U15s have really stepped up a gear this year and are playing attractive rugby. We had a very tough group and to win it with three bonus points is a stunning performance. Winning the County 7s last season gave

CARPET CLEANER HIRE

the team confidence and they are all really looking forward to their first County Cup semi-final as Juniors." ■ MELBOURNE Under 10s had their hard work and dedication pay off with success in the Cup Festival held at Mellish RFC by delivering a phenomenal display of rugby, winning four out of four games with 12 tries scored and none conceded. They qualified for the quarter-finals held at Welford Road together with Under-10s teams from Bury St Edmunds, Kesteven, Oakham, Melbourne, Silhillians, Stourbridge, Syston and West Norfolk clubs. The games kicked off before Tigers' Heineken Cup clash with Clermont Auvergne and hundreds of spectators saw Bury St Edmunds, Oakham, Melbourne and Stourbridge secure quarter-final victories. Melbourne under 10s were able to return to Welford Road for the semi-finals on the weekend of January 21

when the Tigers took on Aironi Rugby in the Heineken Cup. In the semis, Bury St Edmunds booked a final showdown with Melbourne. The Suffolk side secured a final place with a 2-0 victory over holders Oakham. Melbourne will join them in their first Prima Tiger Cup final after a tense and closely fought 1-0 victory over Stourbridge from the West Midlands. Steve Rudd, Melbourne team manager, said: "We are absolutely ecstatic to reach the final. The boys have worked their socks off and all credit to Stourbridge because it was a great game." Tigers community manager Scott Clarke said: "It was a fantastic day of Prima action and all of the teams can feel proud of their achievements." The Prima Tiger Cup under-10s contact tournament is now in its 18th year and the final, will be held at Welford Road on Sunday, March 4, before Tigers take on Gloucester in the Aviva Premiership.

Double act TWO former Melbourne RFC junior players, Jake Alborn and Joe Cain, played for Leicester Tigers in their game against the England Under 18s at Welford Road on January 29. Jake captained the squad and both played the whole game. They were both very solid indeed and helped a good Tigers pack win the match. Whilst at Melbourne both players had Crawford Fisher and Guy Page as their coaches and the club is very proud to see where playing for a small rugby club team can take you.

They began with a 1-1 home draw against Derby Royals, Adam Ross getting the all-important goal. A hard fought 3-2 away win at Sandiacre followed with Matthew Brain getting a brace and Ross adding the other. A week later Dynamos put on one of their best performances of the season to beat Rowsley 2-1 away in the quarter-final of the cup. In-form Adam Ross had given Melbourne an early lead but the home side equalised and the first team were indebted to a wonderful reflex save from keeper Mark Croake to stay on level terms. A superb individual goal from Danny Guild made the difference, sending Dynamos through to a semi-final at the end of March. DYNAMOS RESERVES continued their good form in January, staying in second place, just a point behind the leaders, Allenton Reserves. They began the month with a 2-2 draw away to Derby Royals, Matt Archer getting both goals with his second a last minute equaliser. A week later, Farrell Scott hit a double in the 4-1 away win over Pastures Reserves. A Vinny Halifield screamer and an own goal completed the scoring. The Reserves ended the month with a 5-0 home win versus Bargate Reserves. A brace each for Jack Tivey and Sam Taylor plus a Jack Havron penalty secured the win, leaving the Reserves in good form going into a big month. TICKNALL RANGERS had a great start to the new year, winning all three of their league games and climbing to the top of the table. Starting with a 5-4 home win against Travellers Rest A, two goals from Ben Dale, a Matt Archer penalty and headers from Kevin Earp and Dean Tivey secured the three points. Ticknall performed even better the following week winning 9-1 away to Shobnall Rovers. It was Ben Dale who led the way with a hat-trick. A double from leading scorer Matt Archer, including one from the spot and strikes from Craig Hall, Paul Harvey, Kevin Earp and Alex Slater made up the total. Rangers ended the month with a superb team performance in beating third placed Greenfield Royal Oak 8-2 with Archer leading the way with four goals to take his tally this season to an impressive 22 goals. Ben Dale continued his good from with a goal, plus Mark Nixon, Craig Hall and an own goal putting Ticknall top of the table with the top teams still to play. THE BLUE BELL played just two games in January, winning one and losing one. They started with a good 3-0 win at home to Spondon Dynamoes, Micheal Tristam getting a double along with a strike from Matt Holmes – but this was followed by a 4-1 away defeat to Arboretum with Sam Scarlett getting the consolation goal. AFC MELBOURNE'S poor run of form continued with losses in all three games, starting with a heavy 13-1 reverse at Grange Park with Rob Painting getting the goal. This was followed by 8-0 and 40 defeats to Toton Town and West Hallam respectively.
