Diamond duo’s big celebration – Page 11
by DAVID BELLIS THE LOCAL election count at a packed Greenbank Leisure Centre in Swadlincote was, as with all counts, an exciting but – as it turned out – frustrating time too.

The results for the South Derbyshire District Council were seriously delayed by the priority given to the National Referendum and the priority given to the national vote extended the count, which started at 10am and went on to well past 5pm. Jane Carroll, veteran of many election counts, failed in her bid to regain her Labour seat on the district authority, which she lost in 2007 after many years' service on the council. Her setback was a cause for Tory jubilation, as Jim Hewlett held the second Melbourne seat behind John Harrison. This signal victory effectively ensured that the Conservatives would remain in power at Swadlincote for another four years. The final count left the Tories with a council majority of two - 19 seats to Labour's 17. The local Aston seat provided a clean sweep for the Tories, with Neil Atkin and Peter Watson holding their seats, and newcomer Ann Watson (no relation) ensuring a whitewash. Ticknall's Michael Stanton – after boundary changes now within the Repton constituency – is also back at Swadlincote, where he is likely to be voted in as chairman of the council There was, as is now usual in local elections, a pretty poor turnout. Most district council constituencies were below 40 percent, although Melbourne achieved more than 57 percent. The Melbourne Parish Council, holding the first contested elec■ Cont’d on Page 5

Specials success
Rams’ jam band
A CAMPAIGN to recruit more Special Constables to Derbyshire Police is proving successful. The force has held events across the county in recent months to tell people more about specials and the role they play in policing communities. Since September 2010, 450 application packs have been handed out. Sixteen new recruits were sworn in last month, 22 are currently being trained, 40 are due to start their training in May and a further 139 applicants are in the initial assessment stage. Assistant Chief Constable Dee Collins said: “We are pleased that so many people have decided to join the Special Constabulary and I hope that we continue to receive applications with people of all ages and backgrounds expressing an interest in signing up." Special Constables work alongside regular officers and play an important part in keeping neighbourhoods safe. For more information about joining the specials, or to find out more about recruitment events in your area, call 0300 330 1330 or email recruitment@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk or.

THE MELBOURNE Historical Research Group will be displaying the story of education in Melbourne at its exhibition on Saturday and Sunday, May 14/15, in the Main Hall at the Leisure Centre between 11am and 5pm. By the mid-17th century a school of sorts was held under a leaky roof in Melbourne Parish Church, but we don’t know how it was funded or organised. It may have been a “casual” school that lasted for only a short time, although it is possible that the school persisted and received a permanent endowment from Lady Betty Hastings in 1738,
safeguarding its future. In the 19th century education in Melbourne blossomed. The flourishing non-conformist chapels had their own Sunday schools and there were several small, private schools. Melbourne’s most unusual school in the early 19th century was the Infants School on Castle Street, built adjacent to Castle Mills in 1827 and pulled down along with Castle Mills in 1989. By the 1870s, Melbourne’s educational provision was deficient. The growing population had outgrown the existing facilities, and the long-needed new Board School was
built in 1896-7. The choice of site and the high cost of it caused a furious debate with a great deal of ill-feeling and slanderous exchanges between Melbourne residents. The Board School (later Melbourne Secondary Modern) only closed in 1977 and remains very much alive in the memories of many people today. The photographs on show at the exhibition will offer a chance to indulge in pure nostalgia as well as history, and include photographs of staff and pupils at the present Infant and Junior Schools as well.

It’s back to the Blitz to stage a fund-raiser COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011
ST MICHAEL'S Players, A Choir’d Taste and Melbourne Operatic Society are to present a Forties Night to remember. On May 21, Melbourne Leisure Centre will be transformed when the three local groups combine to produce an evening of great entertainment with a war-time theme. The evening will be hosted by Paul Harper, a professional war-time compere, and will include a delicious meal (no powdered egg or Camp coffee!) as well as sketches to make you laugh, songs to take you back in time and a community singalong with Philip Heath at the piano. There will also be a bar serving real ale
and wine ... and a chance to dress up in Forties style if you want to. 'Back to the Blitz' will be the first of a series of community fund-raising events to enable the purchase of a flexible portable stage for the leisure centre, that can be assembled in different ways. This will put an end to years of ‘make do and mend’ by groups when using the existing stage blocks. The new staging will be suitable for use by choirs, bands, dancing groups, quiz teams and drama groups in the leisure centre or, for special occasions, outdoors. While the parish council has done everything it can to make sure the existing stage
3
is safe, it’s still heavy, difficult to move and very inflexible. The parish council leisure centre sub-committee is keen to help and the chair, Chris Howard, has met with some of the groups involved to support the fund-raising efforts. It will cost about £11,000. If any groups are interested in using the stage in future or in contributing towards future fund-raising, please contact Frank Hughes on 862243. The more groups that take part, the sooner the new stage can be bought. Tickets for the Forties Night, at £12.50 including the meal, are available from Margaret Gildea on 07990 582381.
A PARTNERSHIP between Aston on Trent Local History Group and All Saints’ Parish Church has culminated in a new community venue with an integrated heritage centre, located in the grounds of the churchyard. Five years of hard work and fund-raising to collect nearly £200,000 has restored a dilapidated 1970s building into an extended amenity with modern facilities and full disability access. The featured oak beams and imposing full-window gable end complement the amenity now known as the All Saints’ Heritage Centre. The centre will be formally opened at 3pm on May 21 by the Reverend Tony Luke and the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mr William Tucker, in the presence of invited guests. After the event the building will remain open for village residents to view.

South Derbyshire District Council’s Low Carbon Village Project is helping rural communities to promote sustainable, energy-efficient living. The authority has been working with Barrow on Trent Parish Council to roll out the initiative, and Cllr Peter Watson, chairman of Environmental and Development Services at South Derbyshire District Council, said: “There is a drive, determination and desire to help the environment in any way we can in South Derbyshire. "We are delighted to be working with communities such as Barrow on Trent to develop environmental projects, to help them to become more sustainable and assist residents socially and financially at the same time. Together we can help to make a difference.” Two other areas of South Derbyshire – Melbourne and Newton Solney – have also signed up for the Low Carbon Project.
MELBOURNE Civic Society members have been concerned about the increasing amount of litter outside of the town centre and decided to do something about it. More than 15 volunteers assembled at the Leisure Centre before making their ways to far-flung parts of the town as part of a big litter pick. In all, 20 large sacks of rubbish were collected. Several areas were in a very poor state including the Recreation Ground, the back of the Pool and Cockshut Lane. The next litter pick will be in October/November and all volunteers will be welcome. Details will be published in the Village Voice. In the meantime the society urges everyone “to think before they drop” as someone else has to clean up their mess!

SO APRIL showers, what happened to you? It seems incredible that the month has gone by with only one day with a small amount of rain. Incidentally, I was at Stratford on Avon that day and witnessed the rain but none fell in Derbyshire. Official records say it was the warmest and driest April on record, which is not surprising. Last April was nearly as dry but we suffered a lot of frosts which did considerable damage to crops and trees, but this year we have had little frost and extremely high summer-like temperatures. This has brought some crops on to maturity too fast, like winter barley and grass. All arable crops and grass are desperate for moisture, although some like maize and potatoes are benefiting. I have never seen our maize crop emerge and look so well so early. That said, at the beginning of May we are still sowing maize for other farmers as well as harvesting
turvy world of an industry that is governed by the weather. It’s interesting to note that that the weather, among other things, is being blamed for price increases in food. National newspapers print charts showing several products prices from six months ago compared with today. I always read such things with a wry smile as most of the items are imported, which has nothing to do with our weather. I do, though, hope that politicians take note of what can happen and what could happen if continual downward pressure on our prices reduces the number of suppliers. Just yesterday we received a letter from our milk buyer telling us that they were imposing a charge of £6.75 for every milk collection they make from us. That will take nearly £2,500 off the bottom line straight away. They cite fuel and vehicle operating costs as the reason. What about our vehicle and operating costs?

Dan and Ann Webster said that the advert placed by Melbourne Community Care was unfortunate in offering trips, where "all passengers must be able bodied". They considered that the advert was in breach of the Equality Act 2010, as it discriminated against disabled people.
Mrs Victoria Hancock, manager of Melbourne Community Care, appreciated the points made and apologised for the lack of clarity in the advert. Mrs Hancock wrote to Mr and Mrs Webster: "Community Care do not provide escorts on advertised trips. However, these trips are open to all, but should someone require escort assistance, it would be their respon-
sibility to arrange someone to accompany them. In particular, if a wheelchair is required, early booking would be advisable, as this will affect the seating configuration". Mrs Webster acknowledged Mrs Hancock's comments, and said that it had been an "oversight" on the part of Community Care. "All she (Mrs Hancock) needed to have said was that they do not supply escorts."

Newcomers to the council are David Carpenter (466 votes), Andy Heafield (681) and Sarah Dunniclif (978). Sarah is the niece of very longstanding local councillor, Henry Dunnicliff, who stood down this year. Top of the poll in the parish election was Jane Carroll with 1,355 votes – over 300 votes more than her result in the district election. Mrs Carroll told Village Voice: "Of course I am disappointed with my failure to win back my seat for Labour, although it is heartening to see a resurgence of the Labour vote in South Derbyshire and in the country. "I am, however, mystified how I polled so well in the parish election, but got 340 fewer votes at district level. I wonder whether the voting system with postal voting was confusing - many people, I am told, found the Referendum vote and the district vote in the same envelope baffling." Cllr Harrison said: “We are pleased that Melbourne’s electors have re-elected both of us so convincingly after a hard-fought but fair campaign. With the Conservatives retaining control of the district council, albeit with a reduced but, nevertheless working majority of two seats, we will continue our policy of cutting costs but not services, while delivering on our promises to, for example, create 21st century sports and community facilities in Melbourne, help to care for the vulnerable and the introduction of a kerb-side plastics collection. “Melbourne’s electors are to be congratulated on the turnout – among the highest in the county.” Some residents in Melbourne commented that none of the candidates for the parish election had issued any statements about who they were, what they did and why they wished to be councillors.

Paul was pleased with his performance in 2010 and this year he improved his personal best, coming home in a very creditable three hours 37 minutes and 59 seconds.
His finishing position was 4,338 out of the 37,000 registered starters. Paul secured a place last year through his brother Ben, whose company had Golden Bond tickets and a spare place on the team. This year he was invited to be a team member right from the start. In both years, Paul successfully came home in front of his younger brother, giving him the sibling bragging rights for two years in succession.

AS SEEN on Screen is the theme – and visitors to the Melbourne Carnival may well spot some strangely familiar faces milling among the crowds. Local groups are getting busy putting together some spectacular film and TV-themed floats for the carnival procession. More than 30 businesses have already signed up to hold stalls at the July 9 summer extravaganza, with some newcomers and familiar faces setting up shop. One stall-holder will be Donna Hazzledine from fancy dress shop Kit & Caboodle – to re-open in Russell Yard at the end of June – who will be at the carnival for the third year running. New at the event will be Creative Little People, which holds children's arts and crafts sessions in Melbourne and surrounding areas. To tie in with this year's film theme, Creative Little People will be running a Mary Poppins stand with related art activities. Also new to the carnival will be a stand put together by Melbourne churches.
Other stalls include those run by Calke Abbey, Melbourne Town Cricket Club, Wood Green Animal Shelter and Shepshed Lions Club. Hungry visitors will be well catered for with candy floss, a hog roast, burgers, chips and ice cream, while children will love the rides and slide which will be put on for the day. And, say organisers, more sponsors than ever have stepped on board this year – to the benefit of local organisations and charities to which the carnival donates its profits. “It should be good fun this year,” says site and stalls organiser and Melbourne mum-of-two Rachel Hill – a new member of this year's organising committee. “There are going to be some new faces amongst the stall holders. The theme is quite broad and it should appeal to every age group.” Anyone interested in running a stall is asked to contact Rachel on melbournecarnival@hotmail.co.uk. – Lucy Stephens

EASTER Sunday saw the third annual Crank Up at the home of Geoff Robey in Melbourne. The Crank Up is when Geoff and son Joe get their collection of 1910-1920 farm engines out into the garden for the first run of the year. All the engines in the collection are from the golden age of farm engines before they were replaced by tractors and are from American manufacturers. Geoff has been a collector for almost 40 years, originally vintage tractors before he began to specialise in American farm machines. Some of his collection has been obtained from users while others have been
imported by Geoff and Joe specifically for their collection. On the day there were over 30 engines on display, all in running order, clanking and banging and smelling of oil, making it a special occasion for enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. And the visitors were not just locals, they came from all corners of the country – County Durham, Carlisle, London and Rhyll in North Wales. Joe has been brought up with the machines, having travelled with his parents Barbara and Geoff to rallies up and down the country for as long as he can remember, so it’s hardly surprising that he has the same sort of enthusiasm and affection for
the collection. He said: “Most of the machinery we have was used for grinding seed, pumping water, threshing, sawing wood and a host of other jobs on farms. Some of the companies that made them are still operating making farm equipment for today’s modern businesses, such as New Holland, International Harvester and John Deere.” Both Joe and Geoff are proud of their collection and enjoy attending the rallies where they display individual machines. But when the full collection is on display at the Crank Up, then it’s really special. If you missed it, look out for next year’s event.

THE appointment of the Revd Dr Mark Powell as the next vicar for the Melbourne group of parishes was announced in a communiqué from the office of the Bishop of Derby. The Revd Powell, 54, is currently the vicar of St. Peter's Church in Ealing in the Diocese of London where he has been since December 2000. He is expected to take up his new post in the autumn. Dr Powell was born in Cheltenham in 1957 and attended the King's School, attached to Worcester Cathedral. He read chemistry at Bath University and stayed on to complete a PhD. After a year teaching in Malvern, he trained at Ripon College, Cuddesdon in Oxford, obtaining a degree in theology, and was ordained in June 1985. He worked in Evesham, Coventry and Watford before moving to Ealing. His special interests are in Liturgy and Jungian Psychology. He is married and has two children, James and Anna. An enthusiastic ecumenist, Mark was brought up within the Methodist Church, before joining the Church of England and he is committed to the training of lay people for ministry in the church. Eagerly anticipating his move to the Melbourne group of parishes, Mark has written for the parish church web site: "I am absolutely delighted by my appointment as the new vicar and all the challenges and opportunities it will offer. Each year the Scarecrow Trail Committee chooses a charity that has relevance to residents of the village, and this year the suggestion of the Prostate Cancer charity came from a local man whose family have been affected by the disease. Such a local link makes the goal of raising funds a personal effort. Committee member Roger Bamkin said: “My uncle suffered from prostate cancer for many years and I believe that it is a hidden disease that merits increased awareness. I am pleased to have
The dates for this year’s Scarecrow Trail are June 11 and 12. ■ FOLLOWING on the heels of the announcement of a new vicar comes the announcement that the Revd David Railton, Curate for the same group of parishes, will be leaving following his appointment as the new incumbent for Hazelwood with Shottle, Holbrook and Milford. David has been in Melbourne for just under three years, and has had a positive influence in the benefice churches and communities. He has been a popular figure during his period in Melbourne and he will go to his new parish with the best wishes of the whole community.

A LARGE number of local residents came to the launch of Andy Heafield's book on the history of Melbourne Town Cricket Club, titled "He Dove 'n' Ketched it" The great and the good were there - Lord Ralph, MP Mrs Heather Wheeler, as well as club cricketers, past and present, and their families. It was an auspicious event, the nostagic pictures and the cricket memorabilia tastefully displayed, bringing back memories for those present, going back over many, many years. Cricket is a nostalgic game – to do with memories of sunlit days,
and great deeds remembered over pints of beer, a game to reminisce about, days to be proud of, and triumphs, great characters and great players. This was indeed a proud day for the old established club and its members, celebrating 150 years, on an April evening following a day of ideal cricket weather, as chairman of the club, Tel Potts, reminded everyone. Club president Richard Heath said that the club was "not just a single team", but consisted of many teams – a junior team, a fundraisers team. a catering team, a new literary team, a ground team – "in fact all the people of Melbourne". A number of older players were honoured, amongst them Len Barber, long-term groundsman, "a great servant of the club", Roy Grummitt, Frank Heafield, "oldest past player", Pete Clough who "could turn a ball at right angle", and still playing legends Tel Potts and Colin Wakefield. Andy Heafield's book – available at a price of £8.99 – was initially funded by the Derbyshire Cultural Services, and is available at Melbourne News, Melbourne Post Office or ring 01332 865422 to collect. All profits from sales of the book will be donated to cricket development at the club. – ● District Councillor Mike Stanton, Andy Heafield, Frank Heafield, the club's oldest surDOB viving player who is 91 this year, and Tel Potts.

COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 “He Dove ‘n’ Ketched It”: The History of Melbourne Town Cricket Club 1861-2011” by Andy Heafield, 2011. Paperback, 144 pages, colour cover with black and white illustrations. £8.99.
COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 THIS © is a book written by a cricketer, aimed primarily (though not exclusively) at cricketers. At first I wondered whether I was an appropriate choice as a reviewer for it, as my presence on a sports field of any description is conspicuous by its total absence, writes PHILIP HEATH. But I need not have worried. This is an approachable book, written in an easy and conversational style. It is equally concerned with anecdotes and character sketches as with the etiquette of cricket, which seems to be as important as the rules. All in all it presents the reader with a microcosm of village life. There are two types of history in this book. The first is the early history of the club, beyond living memory. This aspect is portrayed rather sketchily from a random assemblage of the sparse surviving information. The gift of the ground to the inhabitants of Melbourne by Lord Walter Kerr of Melbourne Hall in 1920 is firmly documented. The other type of history in the book comprises the personal reminiscences and records since the club was refounded after the Second World War, in 1951, supported by photographs and some printed ephemera. The story of the club during these last sixty years takes up the greater part of the book and is colourfully told with plenty of gentle, affectionate humour. Andy tells us that cricket won the approval of the Victorian establishment by promoting the qualities of good temperament, a healthy mind and body, fair play and manliness in the working man. That being so, doctors, JPs and vicars were keen to give encouragement, and figure prominently among the past vice presidents and patrons. Drinking beer and tea also appear to be

Ticknall. The main title of the book, “He Dove ‘n’ Ketched It”, was a spectator’s reference to a catch by David Calvert, and captures the prevailing character of the text. The book tells us of Melbourne’s cricketing dynasties, current Chairman Tel Potts being the patriarch of one of them, and illustrates cricket as a unifying, bonding force that can cut across the distinctions of age and social background. But that does not mean that it is a wholly inclusive sport. Women appear only as tea makers and scorers ..... so far. Andy explains: “... no female cricketer has ever played for the club. With the starting up of women’s cricket in 2011, that fact is destined to become a part of history in the very near future. Stand by for much turning in graves!”

Diamond day© 2011 couple COPYRIGHT COPYRIGHT © 2011 IT WAS a busy day at Melbourne Parish Church on Easter Saturday, April 24, 1951, when five weddings took place in the afternoon. One of the them was that of Eric Mason and Cynthia Dallman, who have just celebrated 60 years of marriage with their diamond anniversary. The couple met on Valentine's Day in 1947 as they were leaving the Melbourne Empire picture house in High Street. Eric was from Breedon and Cynthia from Melbourne and they have been together ever since. Cynthia had four bridesmaids attending their wedding – Carol and Jennifer Bentley, Hilary Marshall and Edith Green – with Tony Brown the best man. Edith became Cynthia’s sister-in-law some months later when she married Eric’s brother, Dennis. Eric worked on the land at Breedon before moving to Breedon Quarry and later to Dunnicliff ’s
shoe factory in Melbourne. Cynthia worked at Castle Mills until daughter Jill was born and then son John some years later. She returned to work at Melbourne Engineering and Brown and Sharpe. Both Eric and Cynthia have been interested in football, being Derby County fans and taking the children with them to home games at the Baseball Ground. Eric also played for Breedon in his preferred position as a half back before taking on board coaching and managing Melbourne Boys during the 70s. He was a well liked and enthusiastic coach, devoting time and effort to the youngsters. The couple moved to their Kings Newton home from Melbourne many years ago and for Cynthia it was like returning home, having been born in Kings Newton House in 1930. Eric and Cynthia celebrated their special anniversary with a family tea and are pictured at home with an anniversary card from the Queen.

Over the last few months, planners at South Derbyshire District Council have been talking to residents about where they live. Around 500 attended 13 ‘community conversation’ days held in the district. The sessions have taken place as the council leads the way forward as part of the Government’s localism agenda, which is looking to get residents more involved in deciding how to plan for future developments. Planners have spoken about the potential issues facing

A questionnaire has also got people thinking about what they believe is required over the years to come. Information from the events will be used to help develop the council’s Local Development Framework, a plan shaping where future homes, jobs and facilities will go. Cllr Peter Watson, chairman of the Environmental and Development Services Committee, said: “We are extremely pleased with how the events have gone. Our planners have held some very constructive conversations
about what the people who know best think and feel about the future of their areas. We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to help shape the future of the district. All of the views and comments are valued.”

COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 THE ASTON on Trent Royal Wedding celebrations took the form of a party at the Memorial Hall in the afternoon with more than 200 people attending and a more formal event in the evening. In the afternoon the event included a fancy dress competition for the young children, team games and disco with everyone having their picnic on the lawn. The evening celebrations took the form of a wedding reception with champagne and canapés followed by a three-course meal. THE KING‘S Mill Lane street party at Weston was a great fun and family affair with a large age spread. The celebrations started after the wedding had been watched at home when everyone congregated for an afternoon and evening of good family fun, food and frolics. It was a “joyous occasion”, said Kavan Cross. The evening was completed sitting around log burning braziers. THE KINGS Newton Diamond Jubilee Committee celebrated the Royal Wedding with their own party – a wedding reception for 70 guests at the Scout and Guide HQ on Packhorse Road. A three-course meal and entertainment from Jimmy Willan on keyboards all contributed to a very enjoyable event and provided funds for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations next year. THERE are no formal ‘Streets’ in Staunton Harold, so the wedding day celebrations took the form of a paddock party at School Farm. The population of Staunton Harold is only 100 but this was swelled to 130 for the celebration event which started at 10.30am. Fun, games, food and drink were some of the other ingredients that went into making it a very special day. PASTURES’ patriots, the residents of The Pastures in Weston on Trent – along with their friends and relatives – contributed barbeques, beer and bunting for a successful street party, culminating in kids’ games and a water fight. THE Packhorse in Kings Newton celebrated with a weekend of parties.

Bob’s on his bike – for 900 miles
COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 BOB Smith, 47, is planning to cycle from Land’s End to John O'Groats together with a group of colleagues from work in support of Cancer Research. In addition to Bob, the team members are: Nick Booth, Cath Goy, Will Quick and Claire Woodward (the cyclists) and Susan Weatherstone (the support driver, in a car kindly provided by E.ON/Ford). At the moment Bob and the team, from E.ON's New Build and Technology Centre near Nottingham, are in the training phase for their 900-mile challenge, with the rides getting longer and steeper. The start date for the big event is Sunday May 15, with the intention of reaching their goal 12 days later. Bob has been a Melbourne resident for more than five years with his wife Andrea, universally known as Andy, and children Ailith and Ivan, who are both at Melbourne Infant School. The riders each have their own reasons for doing this, as Bob explains: "It’s a couple of years since we detected my wife’s breast cancer. Detected very early and promptly treated, the prognosis is very good, for which we can be grateful. But even so it is still a stressful event. We all know of others in a worse position, and further research can help others have a favourable outcome.” Nick's mum died of ovarian cancer just under three years ago and at 61 was just two weeks away from retiring from teaching. "Cancer wasn’t something I knew much about until then," said Nick, " but now the statistics that say every day 800 people in the UK are told they have cancer, seem all too real. Survival rates are improving all the time however, and it's the pioneering work of Cancer Research UK that is help-

Bob and the team have ridden several multiday MTB tours, mostly in Scotland, and the idea of doing LEJOG has been floating about for a while, but this year it gelled into a plan and the motivation to do a sponsored ride for Cancer Research has given them the incentive to ride this national classic. Bob (pictured above) has planned the route, which takes them from Land’s End through the West Country, north through the Midlands, the Peak District, Lancashire and Cumbria before crossing into Scotland near Carlisle. It's then over the Forth Road Bridge to Perth, Speyside and Inverness before finishing up the coast road to Wick and John O’Groats. The route avoids major roads where possible and makes extensive use of cycle tracks including the Tissington Trail in Derbyshire. Readers are invited to sponsor the team to show that all their hard work is worth it by making a donation through the 'JustGiving' website www.justgiving.com/ride-on

The Reading was by Chris Brookes and soloist, Alexandra Gamble, sang beautifully as people left the church. Alan was the son of Marjorie (née Wall) and Frank Stafford, well-known Melbourne market gardeners, and was raised on Cockshut Lane. Each day, he led his younger sister, Gill, into all sorts of adventures and scrapes, which they thoroughly enjoyed. His inventive streak and ability to make or mend showed itself at 10 years of age when he created a soap box out of orange boxes, with a trailer for Gill. Unfortunately, the brake – made of stick, nail and string – fell off as they careered down Robinson’s Hill. Together, they explored the old quarry, played cricket, skated, sledged, built dens, dug a ‘Colditz’ tunnel, climbed trees and rode a pony bareback. “He was such FUN!” said Gill. In 1966, Alan met Margaret Barker while she was dancing and he was playing bass guitar at the Rialto Ballroom in Derby and they married the following year. The couple had two daughters: Alison in 1970 and Sian in 1972, for whom Alan made an adventure playground in the trees, took them windsurfing, iceskating, sailing and skiing, always encouraging them to believe in themselves and offering support. Alan diversified from market gardening to market stalls at Swadlincote, Burton on Trent and Coalville, selling fruit, vegetables and flowers. He built a mushroom farm, not without a serious accident, an aeroplane hangar, and planted 8,000 trees to make Stafford Wood. Alan was a radio ham (G3 NYZ), but

his passion was flying. From model planes to full-size gliding, he progressed to hang-gliding, making many of his own, including an early model of scaffold poles and polythene. He was a founder member of the Peak Hang-gliding Association and, after buying a microlight, could often be seen flying around Melbourne. He recently spent 700 hours building his dream aeroplane, a Rans Super Six, G-XALZ, and flew most weeks. He loved to take people flying. It was not all plain-sailing, however. He had one serious accident attempting the hang-gliding flight record and another while paragliding at Shining Tor, where he hit the cliff and broke his back and leg. He was said to have had 99 lives. Alan was a popular figure with a sunny disposition, a ready smile, always welcoming and gentlemanly. His friends at Derby Aero Club arranged a fly-by of six aircraft over the Melbourne Hall Tearooms after the service. – Jean Grimley

Nostalgic hour of musical memories THE audience at Melbourne Civic Society's April meeting spent a nostalgic hour in the company of Alan Hopkin, who described his life spent on the music scene. Coming from a long line of professional musicians he was always destined to work in the music business and learn to play a variety of musical instruments. He recounted
his memories of famous musicians and bandleaders who had visited Wishers in Derby, the music shop run by his father and then taken over by him. He described the changing fashions in music and dance over his long career working as a music representative and playing in dance bands.
With his amusing anecdotes and the added bonus of playing his clarinet to demonstrate the art of jazz it proved to be an enjoyable evening. The next meeting of the Civic Society will be on Monday, May 23, at 7.30pm in the leisure centre when Bob Smith will talk about the history of bellringing.

Go on, have a laugh
TICKETS are now on sale for the next Melbourne Festival Comedy Club evening at the RBL Royal Suite on June 17 and, based on the last sell-out event, they will be selling like hot cakes. The crowd were well entertained by three very different comics and compere James Cook, with contributions from the front row. The first up, a Portugese commedian known as Philberto the Portuguese Geezerhe, showed he had put his short time in Melbourne to good use with his observational humour and his Melbourne Rap featuring some of Melbourne's treasures. Original and very funny. He was followed by a smiling happy face from Nottingham, Junior Simpson, who entertained with his happy, giggly style. Top of the bill was a return for Steve Day, the only deaf comedian on the circuit and a crowd favourite who entertained with completely new material, the common thread being his hearing impediment. It was a good fun night and good entertainment. Appearing on June 17 will be Paddy Lennox, Simon Fox and Carly Smallman with compere Liam Speirs. The Arts Festival show will be on Friday, September 16.

I WAS disappointed to read a letter in your last edition stating that local parents are looking to set up a ‘free school’ in Melbourne. The children of Melbourne are able to attend Chellaston School, an outstanding secondary school, which takes children from all backgrounds and provides excellent education. While I recognise the issue with Chellaston School becoming larger, and Melbourne parents’ anxiety about their children gaining a place at Chellaston, surely the answer is to lobby the local authority for a new local authority run secondary school for Melbourne, rather than seeking to set up a school which I feel will only create more confusion over local education funding, especially at a time of Government cuts. I AM an ex-Kings Newton resident recently back in Melbourne for a short holiday from France. On the evening of April 20, when walking on Derby Road close to the Market Place with a friend, I stumbled and fell to the ground. A young teenage couple who I did not know came to my aid and volunteered to stay with me until I had recovered. In my embarrassment, finding myself in that situation, I failed to thank them for their kindness. I recognise that young people so often get ‘bad Press’ so I would like to say thank you to them for their actions and let people know that there are still good, considerate and kind young people that deserve some good press. ON MONDAY May 3, my wife Anne and I drove to Hereford, to see the city, and the superb cathedral, with its stunning Mappa Mundi, and Chained Library. It was a most rewarding day, in this lovely city. The highlight of our stay was Evensong, at 5.30 pm, in a cathedral bathed in evening sunshine through the great windows. Evensong was sung by the Melbourne Parish Church Choir, under the baton of Simon Collins, the church's musical director. We sat in the 14th century choir stalls, to sit in contemplation of the fine medieval cathedral, the soaring vaulted ceiling, and tried to comprehend all the people over the centuries who have similarly been present at Evensong. Melbourne Parish Church Choir performed gloriously, which was surely much appreciated by a surprisingly large congregation. Not so many people these days are churchgoers, a huge contrast from only a couple of generations ago. But the Anglican tradition of fine music is kept very much alive by committed and dedicated men and women who give of their time freely in pursuit of musical excellence. We should be proud of the Melbourne Parish Church Choir, an outstanding example of the dedication and commitment so imperative in creating a great choir. David Bellis Kings Newton ❍ The parish church choir is engaged to appear at Canterbury Cathedral on May 29.

To obtain a copy send s.a.e and cheque for £1 payable to “The Wild Ones” to The Wild Ones,12 Chertsey Road, Mickleover, Derby, DE3 0RA. Would you like to help the Trust more? The money raised from this quiz can be used to release funds from the Landfill Tax Communities Fund on a nine-to-one basis. Every £100 raised can become £1,000 for the Trust to spend on work on sites. If you give a fiver it can become £50. It’s not magic but it feels like it. Your support and any donations will be gratefully received. ■ HEATHER Wheeler, MP for South Derbyshire, chaired the national Wildlife Trust event in the House of Commons. It showcased a number of Wildlife Trust projects around the UK which have been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HFL) and saw MPs pledge to ‘value our natural heritage'. Mrs Wheeler said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to chair this national event and show just how much Wildlife Trust projects have brought benefits to local wildlife and people. Such projects, especially in South Derbyshire, highlight what can be done if a body invests in and values the natural environment.”

MELBOURNE Town Cricket Club had a superb start to the 2011 season with both sides winning their opening league games. The First XI were away to Derby Congs Seconds and with 4-54 by skipper Alex Slater restricting the home side to 192-5, it provided a target that Town soon chased down. Thanks mainly to an opening stand of 114 between new signing Julian Humpidge, who hit a stunning 72, and Andy Potts, who scored 37, the Melbourne team romped home with 12 overs to spare. The 2nds were in a similar destructive mood, bowling local rivals Ticknall Fourths out for just 70. Ranjit Rathmore did most of the
damage with 4-9 aided by 3-4 from Colin Wakefield and 3-21 by another new signing, Jason Lender. The newly formed under-13s also had their first win albeit because Castle Donington couldn't raise a side, but a good start for Joe Lacey and Dan Marshal's men all the same. Pictured above are the members of the Melbourne 2nd XI. Back row (left to right): Ross Coxon, Chris Lancaster, Colin Wakefield, Matt Heafield, James Heafield and Joe Lacey. Front row: Paul Scrimshaw, Aranjit Rathor, Ken Grant (captain), Andy Stanley and Jason Lander.

lead. Melbourne fought back with a hat-trick
tries.
They completed their campaign with two losses and a win, and will finish in the top four depending on other results. First up saw the visit of Amber Valley to Cockshut Lane and, in a high-scoring match, Melbourne lost by a solitary point 33-34. The game had 10 tries, two yellow cards and a red card which eventually saw Amber Valley's forward power negate the creative Melbourne back play. Amber Valley narrowly beat Melbourne despite playing 55 minutes with 14 men. Olly Page scored first after a couple of minutes with a blind side break from a ruck. The Amber Valley forwards brought them back into the game and, following a poor 10minutes passage of play after half-time from Melbourne, Amber Valley raced to a 31-7
were scored, though. Next saw Grimsby arrive at Cockshut Lane and the supporters witnessed another try-fest. This time it was Melbourne who raced into a 30-point lead before a Grimsby fightback saw a final score of 48-31. Seven tries were scored with hat-tricks for Rob Hollingsworth and Ashley Stringer and also a try from Olly Page. Euan Holden and Jack Fisher shared the kicking duties. The final league game of the season saw an away trip to Kesteven with Melbourne hoping to repeat the large win at the start of the season. However, an unrecognisable Kesteven side scored four early tries, eventually beating the first XV 33-14. Melbourne’s scorers were Rob Hollingsworth and Rob Foster with Holden converting both
two Pennant games. The friendly saw an easy 92-3 win with 14 tries scored. The first Pennant game was at home to Ripley Rhinos. After an even start, Melbourne succumbed to a superior side who capitalised on a series of Melbourne errors, seemingly scoring every time Melbourne made a mistake. Melbourne played poorly and were always behind, eventually losing 33-17. Tries came from Sam Cole (2) and Dave Baker, with Dean Sylvester scoring a conversion. The following week saw a similar Melbourne side play to its full potential to beat a strong Derby Fourths. The first 15 minutes were very tight, with Melbourne dominating, but unable to score. A couple of Derby breaks nearly resulted in scores but the Melbourne defence was good. Eventually things began to click and, with the forwards supplying a good supply of quick ball, the backs began to prosper. Skipper Steve Wales scored the first two tries, with Derby scoring one to give a half-time score of 14-7 to Melbourne. Both sides had a player sent to the sin bin with Dave Middleton being yellow carded for killing the ball on the line. Steve Wales completed his hat-trick early in the second half while Sam Cole scored following a fine counter attack from Alec Judge and winger Will Weeds scored a fine solo effort. Jacob Watts (playing his first game since breaking his nose) finished off the scoring straight from the final kick-off with a 75m run. Sylvester converted four. The seconds will finish mid-table.

Girls just want to have ruGby fun
The day was a great success with sevMELBOURNE RFC has been spending time COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © rugby. 2011 at Aston Primary School coaching years five and six in tag rugby with a pleasant surprise. Head coach for Melbourne Under-15s Minxes, Nick Woodland, got involved to help his daughter's school in preparation for the annual tag tournament to be held later this year. He said: "I wanted to help get girls aware of girls’ rugby and after talking to the school it seemed a win win situation. I thought we would get several girls but at the first session there were seven girls and six boys, which was great. "They loved it and came back for more the following session which got me thinking about what Melbourne RFC could achieve with this much interest and the club is looking to start an under-12s tag team ready for next season." Melbourne RFC extended an invitation to the girls from Aston on Trent Primary School and other young girls to an open day last month for an opportunity to train and allow the parents a chance to see what happens in the world of girls
eral new players turning up to train and play. "Everyone is excited at the prospects for the future and with the news of the new rules for next season we are looking in great shape to provide girls’ rugby for some time," said Nick. The Minxes will be having an open day over the summer after their tour to Bath, where the girls will be playing during the half-time interval of the Bath-Newcastle game. For more details of girls’ rugby contact Nick Woodland on 07504123122.

SWARKESTONE Cricket Club has a new shirt sponsor for the season. Local businessman Gerry Smith has supported the club with a generous sponsorship package and is pictured presenting Swarkestone captain Tom Poynton and members of the first XI with his sponsorship at a recent pre-season friendly. Swarkestone are members of the Derbyshire County Cricket League with the first XI playing in division one. Having failed to secure promotion to the Derbyshire Premier League last season by one point, Swarkestone are hoping to go one better this season. The first XI squad is a mixture of youth and experience and has benefited from the addition of four new faces – Thomas Knight, Ben McGonigal, Ross Whiteley and Mitchell Wilson.

MELBOURNE RFC U12s attended the Mellish Rugby Tournament with a mixed squad of players and continued their impressive performance. Four new recruits, the majority of the Chiefs Forwards, were added to by a couple of Chariots Backs. They posted an impressive set of results winning without conceding a single try and scoring 24 en route to the title. Melbourne's Connor Hooper was named player of the tournament. Results were: Melbourne 50, Ilkeston B 0; Melbourne 35, Mellish 0. Semi-final: Melbourne 15, Ilkeston A 0. Final: Melbourne 20, Paviors 0. Try scorers for Melbourne were Lito Cahilig, Baden Ramage, Jack Shoulders, Peter Hobbs (2), Patrick Arana (2), Derice Laing (2), Dan Bostock (3) and Connor Hooper (12). The U12s' Spring Tour followed with even more success. The traditional Saturday match saw Melbourne up against Earlsdon RFC from Birmingham. All Tour players took the field and the hosts had no answer to the power and skill of the Melbourne players as they ran in nine unanswered tries. The final minute saw Earlsdon grab two consolation tries. Melbourne scorers: Jack Brough, Jack Slater, Jo Travers, Henry Kaczmarczyk, Josh Toplis, Joe Bhalay and Jack Bull (3). Sunday saw both Chariots and Chiefs enter the Whitchurch Festival and the Chiefs' performances against Whitchurch, Sandbach and Crewe didn’t yield a win but the quality and spirit was there for all to see. The Chariots posted group wins against Winnington Park 25-0, Congleton 45-0 and Oswestry 25-0 , bringing them a final against the hosts Whitchurch over only 14 minutes. The huge local crowd were soon silent as wave after wave of Melbourne attacks produced pressure and tries. It became a question of how emphatic the win was going to be with Melbourne running out 20-0 winners with relative ease. And so another tournament victory was secured with 22 tries scored and none conceded. Captain Ben Goddard beamed as he lifted another U12s trophy. Tries were scored by Ben Goddard, Josh Toplis, Joe Travers (2), Henry Kaczmarczyk (3), Joe Bhalay (3), Jack Slater (4), Joe Nalty (4) and Jack Bull (4). ■ First XV rugby reports inside.

What a Dynamic end to the season
COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011
COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 COPYRIGHT © 2011 MELBOURNE Dynamo first team had a superb finish to the season, ending third in the Midlands Regional Alliance Premier Division. They began a hectic month with their best away performance of the season in beating Wirksworth Town 3-1 with Dave Brough, Carl Allsop and Danny Guild getting on the scoresheet. This was followed by a 0-0 home draw to the champions Allenton United, but the Dynamoes were soon back to winning ways destroying Newmount 7-1 at home. A Matt Brian hat-trick (1 pen) plus two from Alex Slater 2 (1 pen), Dave Brough and a stunning Andrew Smethurst header accounted for the big win. A 1-1 away draw at Cromford followed, the point coming thanks to a Carl Allsop header. A midweek 2-2 draw at home to Long Eaton Reserves was earned by goals from Dave Brough and Carl Adams. Another Matt Brian hat-trick against Allenton United couldn't prevent Melbourne losing their unbeaten run. The season ended with a stunning 5-1 away win at Derby RollsRoyce with a double from Dave Brough making him joint leading goal scorer on 19 with Alex Slater. Two own goals and one from skipper Lee Scott completed the scoring and ended yet another fine season for Gavin Salisbury and Alan Buxton's men. MELBOURNE Dynamo Reserves also ended the season in some style and shot up the table to finish in a creditable seventh place. They began their jam-packed month with a 4-1 home defeat to highflying Woolley Moor United with Adam Dolman getting the consolation.
A superb 1-0 away win against Sandiacre Town Reserves was thanks to a Matt Brian goal and this was followed by another away win, 2-1 at Wirksworth Ivanhoe. A 30-yard screamer from Rob Brough and a Neil Redfern strike earned the points here. A 2-0 midweek win away to Ambergate was earned by goals from Dave Brough and Carl Allsop but their fine run came to an end with a thumping 4-1 home loss to Swanick Reserves, a Jack Havron header in vain. An entertaining 3-3 draw away to Wirksworth Town Rserves was memorable for a stunning strike by Ben Dale plus goals from Matt Brian and Jack Tivey. This was followed by a 4-1 home defeat to promotion hopefuls Rowsley Reserves, Dave Brough getting the goal. Dynamo Reserves ended with two wins, the first away to Mickleover RBL Reserves, thanks to goals by leading goalscorer Farrell Scott and Matt Brian in a 2-0 win. The season ended with a 4-1 away win at Swanick Reserves, Jack Tivey, Jack Havron, Matt Brian and – fittingly in his final game for Melbourne Dyanmo after 21 years – a tap-in for veteran Kevin Earp. A good result which finished a fine season for Greg Salisbury and Eddie Dale's men. TICKNALL Rangers found that their backlog of games caught up with them in April and they lost both their cup finals as well as ground in the league. Their first final saw them come up against a fine Seal Inn side and Ticknall were never in the game, losing 3-0. This was followed by a sensational second final against Acorn United. Finding themselves 3-1 down, with Steve Byram getting the Rangers' goal, Ticknall threw everything at their opponents and a Matt Archer penalty and a Craig Hall header saw the final go to extra-time and then penalties which Ticknall unfortunately lost 30. In the league Ticknall began the month with a 4-1 away win at Shobnall Rovers with a Matt Smart hat-trick plus an Alex Slater penalty getting the goals. This was followed by a 4-1 midweek defeat to LKS with Craig Hall getting the consolation. A hat-trick from Alex Slater gave Ticknall a 3-1 home win over Shobnall Rovers. Two disappointing defeats followed, 4-1 at home to Moira United – although the consolation strike by Vinny Hallifield was possibly goal of the season, a quite stunning left foot volley. Alex Slater got the goal in the 7-1 away defeat to Midway. THE BLUBELL Inn ended the season in sixth place with a win and a defeat in their last two games. They beat Walkabout 4-1 thanks to a double from Jack Havron plus strikes by Sam Taylor and Holmes, but they lost 5-1 to the same opposition with Bestwick getting the consolation this time. AFC STREAMLINE ended their season disappointingly. They started the month losing 7-0 to Lovell Partners. This was followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Bulls Head with Williams scoring the consolation. A 6-0 loss to Sandiacre Red, a 3-0 loss to Soldiers and Sailors and a 12-0 defeat to Grange Park were very frutsrating results. The tough season ended for the Melbourne-based Streamline with a 5-0 defeat to Erewash Hotel.
