MUM CALLS FOR A NEW SCHOOL LOCAL mum Rose Boston is seriously concerned about the "increasing size and over-subscription of pupils at Chellaston School". She wants to try to get likeminded parents and residents to attend a public meeting to discuss the possibility of setting up a secondary school in Melbourne. Rose has two young pre-school children and she believes that "our best interests would be served with the setting up of a secondary school in our town for our local children". She is a very busy mum – recently selected to be the chairman of the Carnival committee, and a parish councillor, she is active within the community. What particularly interests Mrs Boston is the recently legislated Government policy for groups of parents with community backing to set up so-called Free Schools. In a letter to the Village Voice Rose writes that "under the Government's 'Free Schools' policy it is possible for people in communities to set up a state- funded school in response to local parental demand". She adds: "I feel strongly that Melbourne's increasing size and the over-subscription of pupils at Chellaston School will mean our best interests would be served with the setting up of a secondary school in our town for local children.

"I am proposing that there should be a public meeting in Melbourne which anyone interested in the idea could attend. This is likely to include parents and teachers, but anyone in the community would be welcome to come along to discuss the idea and how it could come about." She asks that anyone interested in attending a meeting can contact her on rosieboston@googlemail.com or 07795362936. Local MP Mrs Heather Wheeler seems likely to be a supporter of any move to bring a secondary school to the town. Mrs Wheeler, in her maiden speech in the House of Commons, stressed that "we desperately need a new secondary school near Melbourne". Local County Councillor John Harrison has for several years backed the setting up of a secondary school in the town. Speaking to Village Voice, Councillor Harrison said: "I too share the concerns of Melbourne parents who no longer have the traditional guarantee of their children's admission to Chellaston's high performing school, as the school is located in Derby in an area of increasing housing development. "Therefore, with the changed Government's policy of academies and Free Schools, the opportunities are now worthy of serious consideration. “ I have now started to investigate all the practicalities involved."

PAUL Simpson, National Trust gardener at Calke Abbey, is pictured collecting apples for Apple Day. Juicing, pressing, peeling and slicing are just some of the uses for the humble, but versatile, apple. There are many different varieties of apples and Paul is seen with a box of Winter Quarrendon, just one of the varieties found in the Calke kitchen garden orchard.

THERE is continuing enthusiasm for the work of the Melbourne Sporting Partnership and signs are that it is developing a positive head of steam. At the recent meeting of the project group, arrangements were made for a visit to Gosforth Fields Club, in Dronfield, to see first hand and learn about the highly successful development there, which now has pitches and a pavilion that can accommodate about 50 sports teams.

The pavilion provides requisite facilities for all the clubs, and has catering facilities which can meet the needs of functions with 200 guests. The delegation from Melbourne will also learn about the organisation of the club, its constitution, and how it established itself as a limited company. Visits will also be arranged to other clubs/projects in the Midlands. A sub-group of the MSP will meet during October to develop a suitable and workable constitution for the Partnership.

Approval of a draft brief for an initial feasibility study was agreed and this will be developed during the next 12 weeks. Support from officers of the District Council continues and they are working to identify 'pump-priming' funds which could be made available to the MSP during the next six months. To maintain the ‘head of steam’ three future meetings have been diarised, the first in October for a full meeting of the partnership and subsequent meetings in November and December for the Project Group.

Probus Club opportunities MELBOURNE Probus Club currently has several vacancies and would welcome new members. Probus is a club for retired professional and business people. The Melbourne club, founded in 1976, caters for male members only. Meetings take place on the third Wednesday of each month, 10.30am in the Senior Citizens Centre in Church Street, when a speaker is arranged to visit. Various trips are organised throughout the year and it is the custom to arrange an annual holiday of four or five days to include wives and widows of former members. In December the annual Christmas party takes place at the British Legion together with the ladies and the AGM takes place in January when the president and officers are elected. The current president is David Calvert and the secretary is Richard Heath. Prospective members are invited to attend as visitors before taking the decision to become a member.

MELBOURNE'S Barry Elliott is an enthusiastic model maker who recently took his two latest boat building projects – a Galleon called "Golden Seals" and a Contessa Range Yacht – to Swarkestone Gravel Pit for their launching ceremony. The models are radio controlled and Barry is pictured with the controls on the slipway.

Maxwell gives Friends an industrial insight MAXWELL Craven enthralled a sizeable audience after the AGM of the Friends of the Parish Church. His talk, fully illustrated, gave a vivid insight into the dynamic intellectual world of the Midlands in the second half of the 18th century. Mr Craven talked about John Whitehurst, "clockmaker, engineer, and geologist", and placed him within the dynamic life of industrial revolution England, and in particular within the hugely energetic intellectual framework of the celebrated Lunar Society. This society, meeting once a month, had members like Josiah Wedgwood, Matthew Boulton, Joseph Priestly, Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Wright, who were at the cutting edge of the new Britain, intellectually and industrially the front runners of the modern age. Whitehurst was no mere clockmaker – but a mechanical and hydraulic engineer who made compasses, timers and barometers. He helped the development of steam engines, designed and installed modern plumbing systems, and was involved in designing the new Thames/Mersey Grand Canal, which was financed by the industrial leaders, members of the Lunar Society. He was also a revolutionary geologist, speculating on the age of the Earth. Whitehurst was a man of huge talents and wide intellectual vision, and Mr Craven was an entertaining and enlightening speaker.

MCC team to join in Melbourne anniversary MELBOURNE Town Cricket Club is celebrating having been awarded a game against the world famous Marylebone Cricket Club as a part of the local club’s 150th anniversary celebrations next year. The MCC, as it is universally known, was founded in 1787 as a private members' club dedicated to the development of cricket. It owns, and is based at, Lord's Cricket Ground in north London. On hearing the news Melbourne Cricket Club chairman Tel Potts said: ” This a great honour for the club and for Melbourne. We will give the MCC a day, and a game, to remember and we hope that the town will turn out in force to see this unique match.” Organiser of the anniversary celebrations, Andy Heafield, said: “We have a lot of fund-raising events coming up in 2011 as a part of the anniversary including a Promises Auction, the publication of He Dove and Ketched It - The history of the MTCC, a black tie dinner,

a range of souvenirs and the Legends of Cricket match in June. For the players, however, this will undoubtedly be their highlight.” The match against the MCC will be an all-day affair starting at 11.30am – probably in late July. The MCC team will be announced nearer the date but it will include a sprinkling of former county cricket players bolstered by some of the top young cricketers in the Midlands. The Town side will be selected nearer the time but as Mr Heafield added: “The biggest problem will be who to select to represent the club. To play for Melbourne in a match against the MCC is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity and I would hope that all players will make themselves available. Whilst we want to put out a team that is representative of a community-based club like ours, we also want to win.”

WEDNESDAY, September 15, heralded the presentation of the cheques to the two chosen charities from Aston's 14th Well Dressing Festival and Sponsored Walk. The charities, Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance and the Aston Playground Project each received cheques to the value of around £1,400. Denise Pierce, on behalf of Air Ambulance, received the donation from

Well Dressing Co-ordinator, Kim Jones, who also presented a donation to Jane Dunn, Helen Moulson and Juliet Horner from the Aston Playground Project. It was the result of a request from Juliet to improve the playground facilities that the idea to form a group to do just this began. Jane took up the challenge and, hopefully, in the not too distant future, it will all come to fruition.

Air Ambulance, whose funds all come from donations, were once again very grateful to receive their cheque. Pictured are: Steve Aynsley, chairman; Helen Moulson, chair Aston Playground Project; Jane Dunn, cochair Aston Playground Project; Kim Jones, Well Dressing fashion co-ordinator; Juliet Horner, Committee Member; and Denise Pierce - DLRA Representative.

FOOD prices are increasing at their fastest rate for over a year, according to a report by the British Retail Consortium. And these increases come at the same time as increase in energy and fuel costs. The report said that due to the fact that we import over 40 percent of our consumption we are particularly vulnerable to global price rises. Obviously we can’t produce some exotic foods here, but a lot of meat and dairy products come in which could be farmed here if we were encouraged to do this. Instead we are directed in the opposite route of taking land out of production and putting it into environmental schemes like the local National Forest plantings. This to me seems a very short-sighted policy and one which discourages the younger generation from working in landbased industries and food growing. Along with all the standards and regulations which we now have to conform to, which a lot of people are saying “no I won’t bother anymore” the future is far from optimistic. A clue to some of the causes of price increases reported could came in an article in the same

newspaper on the same day. One major supermarket (name begins with a T) reported a 12 percent surge in profits and supposedly earns £6,000 a minute. I don’t condemn the supermarket chains because they do a very good job for the consumer but their treatment of some of their suppliers does leave something to be desired. Interesting to note, the same firm is about to offer banking in the future – which I think speaks volumes! ■ It’s certainly been a fruit and nut year. We have a couple of damson trees in the orchard and they were so burdened with fruit that two large bows fell off one windy night. The little longhorn calf living there thought he was in heaven. A few years ago I replaced some fallen horse chestnut trees that had been a feature at the farm for many years, and for the first time they have been loaded with ‘conkers’ – all massive samples. Of course today, children have no interest in the games we used to play in the schoolyard so they all go uncollected.

Highways main topic of interest TOPICS covered at the October Parish Council meeting centred mainly on issues relating to roads and highways. Most significant in the short-term are the plans to close the roads in the centre of Melbourne on Sundays in October and November for resurfacing work. There are also proposals to do away with the double yellow lines in the Market Place and return the bus park outside Birds to a general parking area. Moving on to Kings Newton, an application to the Traffic Commissioners by an HGV operator has been submitted to locate a business at the Trent Lane depot, which it is felt may create more misery for local residents and aggravate the current situation. The alternative River Trent crossing – to relieve traffic from the Swarkestone Causeway – was a feature for discussion when maps of the alternative routes were tabled.

A report commissioned by Derbyshire County Council and entitled ‘The Swarkestone and Stanton by Bridge Bypass Feasibility Study’ has been prepared by consultants as the first phase of operations. The parish council is not being requested to make a decision on the choice of location. The maps were only for viewing and to recognise that potential sites have been identified by the consultants in conjunction with the county council. Significant research and consultation will be required before a preferred route can be chosen. No timescales have been offered at this time. Moving on from roads and highways, new representative from East Midlands Airport Hannah Borkett attended the meeting and made a short contribution. In response to a question from Charlie Robey, it was declared that the council has no knowledge of any plans or planning applications to create a lager brewery in Kings Newton.

Bridge back to its former glory A SPECIAL celebration event was held to mark the restoration of an historical South Derbyshire canal bridge to its former glories. The Hicklin Bridge, located between Stenson and Findern, partially collapsed in 2008 after an accident involving a tractor and trailer. British Waterways embarked on a 10-week £250,000 repair project on the 200-year-old listed structure as part of its annual winter repair programme. British Waterways and South Derbyshire District Council arranged for a temporary bridge to be installed in June 2009 to keep

the popular route open until repairs were completed. Findern Footpaths Group organised the event to mark the completion of works over the Trent and Mersey Canal. Among those attending were Cllr Neil Atkin, the chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, Darren Green, Waterway Manager for British Waterways, and Cllr Barry Bagnall, chairman of Findern Parish Council. Everyone attending was invited to share a cake made by Findern villager Mrs Anne Bagnall to commemorate the occasion.

Recruiting staff for the census ON March 27, 2011, the next census will take place under the auspices of The Office for National Statistics (ONS). A census is a count of the population and is held every 10 years in the UK. Everyone is asked the same questions on the same day to give a complete picture of the nation. This information helps central and local government make key decisions about future policies, planning, services and

funding for local communities. Up to 35,000 staff will be recruited to fill a range of posts to work in local communities across England and Wales to support the 2011 Census. Capita is currently recruiting in this area on behalf of the Office for National Statistics and they are looking for people to fill a range of temporary part-time and full-time jobs. These fixed term jobs range from supervisory roles responsi-

ble for co-ordinating activity to helping and encouraging members of the public to complete questionnaires. Anyone looking to earn extra money or to play a part in shaping their community's future is welcome to apply. OVER the last month Athenaeum workers were busy preparing for different things happening in Melbourne, one of which was the Festival. During the weekend of the art trail the Athenaeum was open to the public to come in and relax in the youth café and have some refreshment. It was encouraging to see so many come through the doors, even if it was just to have a peek at what the Athenaeum looked like. Many had not been inside the building before and it was a good opportunity for staff to speak to people about what we do and what the café has to offer for the community and in particular the young people.

For one of the activities in September, the Athenaeum had a chocolate tasting session and quiz for the young people. The quiz and chocolates were provided by Bitter Sweet a chocolate company based in Melbourne. The young people had a fun time guessing the flavours of the delicious chocolate and learning some facts about chocolate. The Athenaeum finished September with a Saturday event, a Yard sale to raise money for the Athenaeum. The money raised will contribute towards improving facilities in the café. Many thanks to all those who helped make the sale happen and to those who supported it and came along. ■ Festival round-up – Page 14 and 15.

Causeway study in county council hands "AT least, it is a start.” So said Barbara Foster, a resident of Swarkestone, when it became clear that an engineering assessment had been commissioned by Derbyshire County Council to study alternative routes to the heavily used 13th century Swarkestone Causeway. Mrs Foster is one of the organisers of a survey which proved in 2007 that traffic volumes were running at well over 20,000 vehicles per day, causing damage to the historic causeway, and huge congestion delays. South Derbyshire District Council, recognising the vital importance of the causeway to the economic life of the whole of South Derbyshire, had arranged financing to fund the feasibility study, and that study is now in the hands of Derbyshire County Council. The county authority now has before it options for a scheme constructed to current design standards "to provide a bypass from Swarkestone Bridge and Causeway, and for the village of Stanton by Bridge". The routes identified by the feasibility study are estimated to cost out at between £12 million and £20 million. The route options seem to offer relief for Stanton by Bridge, and to bypass the causeway, but still leave Melbourne and in particular Kings Newton unrelieved of the increasing

traffic flows to the Donington racetrack, East Midlands Airport and the M1 motorway. The County Council has stated that no further work will be carried out, as "viable scheme options do appear to exist", and the schemes will be considered by cabinet in due course". The problem is, of course, finance. A list of potential schemes within Derbyshire is being assembled by the county council, but all decisions on those schemes will have to await the full spending review in the autumn, when the Department of Transport will advise what funding is to be made available for major schemes. County Councillor John Harrison said, "After over 20 years of campaigning, these proposals are the best response so far. They address the preservation of the Grade A listed Ancient Monument, but sadly stop short of bypassing Melbourne and Kings Newton." Mrs Foster said that the brief for the feasibility study "seems too narrow". Although pleased that the proposals seemed to provide some protection for the historic causeway, she was concerned that the study showed "a lack of any coherent strategy", and although the options offered gave protection to Swarkestone and Stanton, little seemed to have been done to study the current and possible traffic flows, or to strenghten the still inadequate local infrastructure.

SOUTH Derbyshire District Council chairman Neil Atkin visited Melbourne with his consort Kathy Slater to listen to The Country Dance Band, a group of five musicians who got together earlier this year to play music for country dancing. They are now playing a regular weekly spot at the Melbourne Royal British Legion club playing a variety of jigs and reels for those who enjoy country dancing. One of the dancers recently described it as ‘really happy music’ and adding that ‘We always leave with a smile on our face’. With a caller as part of the group, the dances are described as being gentle and easy. Cllr Atkin obviously enjoyed it, apparently joining in with every dance during his stay. The dancing takes place every Tuesday from 7.30 until 9pm and admission is free. The picture shows Cllr Neil Atkin with consort and others enjoying the dancing.

Arrests made POLICE responded quickly when alerted to problems taking place on Friday, October 1, in Melbourne. A number of arrests were made following a series of incidents including criminal damage and assault. The initial incidents started in High Street and continued through the Market Place and along Derby Road involving a significant number of young people. The incident attracted a large number of spectators. Investigations are ongoing and additional patrols are now operating in the area.

Barry really clicks when it comes to photography

● Purpose built nursery catering for children from 3 months to 11 years ● Family Business ● Home cooked food ● Own private 1.5 acre playing field ● Government funded sessions ● Good Ofsted report - February 2008 Scallywags Private Day Nursery, Castle Lane, Melbourne, Derbyshire Tel: 01332 862188 / 862162 www.scallywagsnurserys.co.uk LOOKING at the polished, carefully composed pictures of ace Weston on Trent photographer Barry Thompson, most people would recognise the work of a man who has unusual skills in the art of photography.

Helen Burrell Fine jewellery made to order at Melbourne Hall Visitors Centre, Church Square, Melbourne DE73 1EN Shop & Workshop open Saturdays and Sundays from 11.00 - 4.30.pm

DESIGNER JEWELLER Engagement and wedding rings, and dress rings too, can be designed and created, or ordered as ‘ready made’, to suit your budget. I can provide all the traditional jewellery shop services, such as re-sizing rings, soldering chains etc. Illustrated is a set of rings made in 18ct white gold, with diamonds, based on a wave design. One of my more unusual services is to design and transform old jewellery into new, by remodelling the gold from the original pieces and resetting the stones in totally new designs - examples of this can be seen at the shop. I also interpret people’s life stories into symbolic necklaces and specialise in memorial jewellery too. To view further examples of my work go to www.holistic-jewellery.co.uk Ready-made jewellery is also on view at the shop. If you are interested in placing an order for Christmas, please come and see me soon, to discuss your requirements, and allow me the time to create it for you. Thank you.

His skills have been acknowledged by the Royal Photographic Society, which was founded in 1853 to "promote the Art and Science of Photography". Barry has been awarded the Licentiateship of that prestiguous body, a rare distinction, earned only after a rigorous examination by the RPS. Back in 1853, photography was considered an art and a science, because in those days photography was certainly very much a scientific art, based on chemical reactions. In our time, the digital computer based photography has opened a whole new vista of opportunity for the photographer, based on the new computer based technology. Photography has become the art of imaging. Barry is a very agreeable man, who is in his early 70s and married for 25 years – but he doesn't seem to have slowed down with advancing years. He continues to be "very busy", a big family man with three sons and seven grandchildren, ongoing business interests, actively engaged in web creations, interested in local history, but "passionate about photography". He is a keen member of the Derby City Photographic Club, and of DARC, a cutting edge technology club. As he writes in his blog, these two organisations "combine my love of camera sessions, and the technical wizardry necessary for image manipulation through complex softwear". He is a member of the Aston on Trent Local His

tory group, creating their website, and assisting in the preservation and enhancing of old photos for their archives. His skills have enabled him to produce a fine website for a local charity, Derby Sands, which is dedicated to helping and advising people who have suffered the trauma of the loss of a child. The charity also promotes research into the causes and prevention of the deaths of babies. Barry was a Rolls-Royce apprentice, studied engineering design at Broxtowe, was a computer marketeer in the 90s, ran a successful business in marketing computers, and extended his interests into education, becoming both a teacher and an IT man for Trent College. He will be exhibiting at the Birmingham NEC in February, at an exhibition called Focus on Imaging. He also delivers an annual education course for people interested in photographic softwear. Barry seems a very happy busy man, not in any way resigned to idling his life away. ■ For the technical, Barry uses a Nikon D300 camera. – DOB

Champagne toast to WI WInners MEMBERS and visitors attending a recent meeting of Breedon on the Hill WI enjoyed a 'champagne' toast to celebrate the group’s exceptional successes in this year's Ashby Show. Their entry in the cookery competition, 'A Shakespeare

Play', was a Macbeth-themed display which won The Spooner Trophy. Added to the points scored in the handicraft section, Breedon took first place overall in the show and were awarded the Wood Lake Shield. Several members also had successes in

the individual competitions. The speaker for the evening was Jane Melen, a past president, who gave a very interesting, and tasty cookery demonstration full of ideas for using up surplus summer fruits and vegetables.

LAtEst criME stAtistics OFFICIAL figures released relating to crimes and reported incidents in the area for the timescale August 1 to September 2 were 73. These are split between 26 crimes and 47 reported incidents. Theft, burglary and criminal damage represent the most common crimes, with drunkenness, Anti-Social Behaviour and suspicious people/vehicles the most prevalent reported incidents. There would also appear to be an increasing trend of sneak-in burglaries where entrance to a property is made through an unsecured door, car keys are taken and subsequently the car is stolen. Many of these incidents take place during daylight hours.

High-flying time for all at East Midlands Airport IT has been a bumper time for East Midlands Airport having been awarded 'Airport of the Year' at the National Travel Trade Gazette (TTG) awards in London recently and the 'Star Regional UK Airport' award a few days earlier. Voted for by travel agents and independent industry observers, the TTG awards saw EMA succeed over Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster, Sheffield, Cardiff and Bristol along with sister airports Bournemouth and Manchester. EMA was recognised for its high levels of customer satisfaction, excellent product development and its strong relationship with travel partners. Caroline Plant, East Midlands Airport's Marketing Director, said: "We are delighted and extremely proud to have secured such a highly acclaimed award from some of the most experienced industry professionals in the travel industry.” Airports were judged on their facilities, customer service standards, innovation, travel trade relations, business strategy, environmental performance and commitment to their local communities. The 'Star Regional UK Airport' recognised the strong focus the airport has on working with and improving relationships with the travel agents across the region. ■ THE annual EMA Community and Environ-

ment Investment report was published recently, for the fourth consecutive year. The report provides an update on EMA’s continued commitment to the local community and sustainable developments for the wider environment and details programmes and initiatives that demonstrate the airport’s responsibilities to the local community and the environment. Key areas are identified in which the airport has worked hard to mitigate the impact of its operations – including education programmes, charitable funding and donations, arts and continued engagement with the local community. This year’s report includes reference to a '59% reduction in noise-related complaints' and that '101 projects have been supported by The East Midlands Airport Community Fund'. Other highlights include: The newly installed depARTures art galleries within the departure lounge; improvements to the airport’s nature trail; and a six-month trial to run an airport passenger transfer bus powered by liquid bio-methane. A record 84% of waste collected, amounting to 645 tonnes, was recycled. EMA was the first UK airport to plant a willow farm, which will provide renewable wood fuel to heat and cool the terminal building. The report recognises national and local environmental awards and also that EMA has maintained its ISO14001 Environmental Management accreditation for the seventh consecutive year.

Bluebell Park will also provide dedicated dementia care in Barchester’s unique Memory Lane Communities. These communities are designed to encourage people with dementia to stay as independent and active as possible. Finished to a high specification by Barchester’s expert interior design team with luxury fittings, all the rooms at Bluebell Park include en-suite shower facilities and a nurse call system providing round-the-clock care. The entire home is tailored to create a home-like feel with older people in mind including bespoke furniture to make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable. Throughout the home there is a range of dining facilities where residents can dine in social surroundings with friends or opt to take meals in the comfort of their own rooms. An experienced catering team sourcing local produce will create an impressive choice of delicious and wholesome cuisine. Once open in October, Bluebell Park will be the newest home within Barchester Healthcare, the national provider of high quality care services. Barchester is proud of its high Care Quality Commission (CQC) ratings and is recognised as the UK’s largest quality care provider.

The company has also won three Government employment awards at the National Workforce Development Awards 2010; Macro Apprentice Employer of the Year Award, Integrating Employment and Skills and Supporting Young Talent.

On the buses – for 100 years LOCAL historian Gordon Foddy has been beavering away as he has been doing for many years in the archives of the Local History Library in Irongate, Derby, and has discovered a notable Melbourne centenary. The first regular bus service from Melbourne to Derby started on Thursday, October 27, 1910. The Derby Mercury newspaper of Friday, October 28, 1910 carried this story: On Thursday afternoon a motor omnibus service was started between Melbourne and Derby. Mr. A. Hulse, formerly of Melbourne, and now of Swarkestone, is the owner of the omnibus, and he started his new venture on Thursday, leaving Mel-

bourne at 2.30, and picking up passengers en route. The fare is 8d. single journey and 1s-2d return, with special single fares from Stanton 7d, Swarkestone 6d., Chellaston 5d. and Allenton 3d., and cheaper return tickets. The times of starting at present are: Melbourne Market Place: 10am and 2.30pm, and Derby Cornmarket 12.30pm and 5.30pm. The conveyance is commodious and nicely upholstered. On several trips more passengers have applied than could be accommodated with seats, and it is likely that the new service will be well patronised, as it saves the long journey to the station each end.

ALL-ROUND SOUND FROM A SQUARE PIANO

Barchester truly values the opinions of its residents and those that use and know its services. More than 90 percent of the 4,500 residents, relatives and healthcare professionals recently surveyed view their Barchester home as “a happy place to live”.

If you are considering a move to residential care or are a relative or friend of somebody experiencing memory challenges… Come along and have a look firsthand at the show suites opposite the care home site at Royal Glen Park. Our show suites are open 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm and the team is now taking reservations for garden rooms at the home. Feel free to pop in for a coffee and a chat. DURING the last two weeks in September visitors to Calke Abbey were invited to show off their musical skills and play the 1773 Beyer square piano. This early piano is one of approximately 900 manufactured – but there may be as few as 27 remaining. This particular instrument was donated to Calke in the will of Mr Frank Brown, director of music at the University of Bath. Visitors were greeted in

the lobby by examples of 20th century livery before entering the saloon to view fine Victorian costumes that once belonged to Sir Vauncey H Crewe’s children. There was a rare opportunity to see Sir Vauncey’s egg collection, which includes rarities such as Bee-Eater and Red-backed Shrike. It is hoped that an assessment of the collection for any scientific value will be done by Derbyshire bird

recorder, Roy Frost. A pastel portrait of 5th Baronet Henry Harpur was reunited with his family, and clothing belonging to Charles Jenney, who inherited the house in 1949, were also on show. – N Jackson, house steward. Pictured are Don Campbell and Marilyn Bradley, room guides at Calke Abbey with the square piano, one of the exhibits on show during the Hidden Calke display.

It’s healthy – and it’s free ...

Time to get in a rut at the Abbey

RESIDENTS from Melbourne and the surrounding villages are invited to take part in the Healthy South Derbyshire event on Saturday, October 30, at Melbourne Adult Education Centre between 10am and 2pm. It’s free to take part and it’s free to attend this health and fitness fair. Toni Jantschenko, South Derbyshire’s Village Games co-ordinator, said: “We want lots of different activities to make it a successful event and so hope that new and existing sports and fitness groups will come to tell other people about their activities. “If you would like to bring a stand or put on a short taster activity please contact me on 07909 442996."

DRAMATIC deer rutting scenes are likely to unfold this month at the National Trust’s Calke Abbey when the red and fallow deer stags battle to win their mates. The park will echo with bellowing calls as the stags try to attract the hinds for mating and antler-clashing skirmishes ensue to finalise control. “The deer rutting season is a wonderful thing to see and, if fortunate enough, photographers can capture some really dramatic scenes,” said Bill Cove, head warden at the National Trust property. “It’s rare that deer get injured during the skirmishes, but we always keep a close watch to ensure all is well.”

sidecar stars show their skills in the world championships MOTOR-CYCLING stars Brett Edge (28) and Craig Smith (29) competed in the Sidecar Speedway World Cup Championships held at Brandon Stadium near Coventry. Currently lying seventh overall in the British championships, the local duo came eighth overall in the World Championship event that was washed out and where a submarine may have been more suitable transport than a 1000cc sidecar outfit. The event was won by Australian reigning World Champions Mick Headland and Paul Waters. Smidge Racing (Craig and Brett) have been together in racing for quite some time, during which Craig has been 250cc, 350cc and 500cc Solo ACU East Midlands Centre Area grass track champion – a feat only equalled once before and that was by his father Rob Smith. During this time Brett, who also competes in Enduro events on a KTM machine, was the mechanic for Craig. Craig was also the 500cc Sidecar East Midland Champion in 2008 riding as a passenger. In January 2009 when a 1000cc grass track sidecar outfit became available Craig borrowed it and finished third in his

first sidecar event as a driver. Craig asked Brett if he was daft enough or brave enough to be a passenger and Smidge Racing was born. To put things in perspective, the big 1000cc sidecars are some of the most dramatic motorcycles ever to race on grasstrack or speedway circuits. With around 200bhp the bikes can top out at over 100mph on the straights on big tracks, with no brakes and engines running on Methanol. Following the World Championship event and after a hectic week preparing and cleaning the combination for its next outing, Smidge Racing were on the road to the Isle of Wight in better spirits, matched by some better results including a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th places. Craig and Brett wish to thank all their friends and local sponsors, many of whom have businesses or live in Melbourne. Anyone who wishes to offer help in any form is welcome to have a chat with them and they can be contacted through the publicity office located in the Alma Inn. See also www.smidgeracing.moonfruit.com Looking to the future, Craig and Brett are hoping to compete against Mick Headland on his home ground in Australia, possibly as early as next year.

Melbourne was buzzing with a real party atmosphere during the trail weekend, one exhibitor commenting that “if you could bottle the atmosphere you’d make a fortune!” With more than 100 artists exhibiting in more than 60 venues it was a good job that there were plenty of places to stop for coffee, cakes and sustenance along the way. Visitors commented on the variety of the styles of work exhibited and, judging by the empty cashpoint machine, lots of visitors were spending money. The extras on the trail proved very popular with music in the Food Court, outside the Senior Citizens’ Centre and in the Market Place. A hardy crowd of 30-40 “Trojans and Greeks” joined in with the performance of The Great Shakespearean Workout 2010 outside the Leisure Centre, despite the shower of rain. Churchgoers at the Parish Church were in for a surprise when they emerged from the Festival Service to find artist Flore Gardner creating her M(ob)ile installation by wrapping the building in a mile of French knitting from a huge ball of red wool! The Festival team were very grateful to the Revd. David Railton, Curate of Melbourne Parish Church, who agreed that it was a great way to reinforce the Parish Church’s place as part of the Festival. Festival Director Sharon Brown said: “The Festival team really appreciated the continued high level of support from our hosts and sponsors”. Open exhibition sponsors Reeds Rains Estate Agents were very much in evidence with artist Liz O’Connor exhibiting in their office on Derby Road. Fishers Solicitors invited Punch and Judy to join them in their hospitality tent and Davidsons Homes held a special open house at their new Millbrook Estate in Melbourne. Sharon also confirmed that Melbourne Festival is safe for another year following the announcement that Derbyshire County Council has generously donated £1,000 towards next year’s event through Cllr John Harrison’s Community Leadership Allowance.

THE Festival concert and performance programme proved extremely popular. Dani Wilde’s concert which launched the event was a sell-out and a great night. She has since had sessions on Jazz fm and Radio 2. Hothouse Jazz were amazing and Hannah James and Sam Sweeney had the Alma bursting at the seams. The Comedy Club was deemed to be the best yet and 'Camp David' – the David Bowie tribute act – had everyone singing along. The programme continued in a calmer vein with The Perfect Crime and My Brilliant Divorce, winding up with Idle Hands Blues Band and Musica Donum Dei. The Festival team is planning more events and for those inspired by the artists on the Trail there are workshops in October and November led by artists who exhibited at the Festival. Next year’s Art and Architecture Trail will be on September 17/18.

in concert at Camp David performed to an appreciative audience that filled the floor dancing all night, something that was never possible in the venues that Bowie played. It was notable how many of the audience knew the lyrics of songs they had all obviously loved as students/apprentices/trainees, but also how this wonderfully diverse music was finding a new audience through a second generation of fans. Another feature was the sheer joy that the band displayed at being so well received, changing the set list to ride the wave of an enthused audience. At every level Camp David more than succeeded and delivered a memorable evening that has benchmarked excellence for any future live gigs that the festival puts on.

Cash booster for village youth club TICKNALL’S popular youth club, now in its second successful year, has won a £500 grant from the Burton Breweries Charitable Trust to buy a play parachute, inflatable cubes and craft materials for the many youngsters who enjoy the weekly sessions in the village hall. Started in 2009 by villagers Michelle Pole and Katie Dodson, the Tuesday evening Youth Club has now grown to a register of around 50 youngsters aged between seven and 15 with 30 dropping in regularly for fun and games each week, paying just £2 for the two hour supervised session from 7 till 9pm. “We’re enormously grateful to the Burton Breweries Charitable Trust for its £500 grant that’ll boost our equipment resources and encourage

more village youngsters to join,” said Michelle Pole, joint leader. “This winter we’re planning Winter Olympics team games that’ll encourage the youngsters to enjoy working together and take pride in their achievements,” added Katie Dodson, joint leader and local veterinary surgeon. Adrian Wedgwood, trustee of the Burton Breweries Charitable Trust said: “We’re the leading charity supporting the development of young people’s talent and citizenship skills in our South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire area stretching from Burton and Swadlincote to the outskirts of Derby covering rural communities including Willington and Melbourne.” Pictured above are (l-r); Adrian Wedgwood (BBCT trustee); Michelle Pole and (far right) Katie Dodson with youngsters at Ticknall Youth Club. Charity run is another golden day

History society season’s talks under way

THE 24th annual charity run in Elvaston Park, the Golden Gates Gallop, raised more than £1,000 for Leukaemia Research. With nearly 200 participants choosing between a two-mile fun run and a five-mile run in the beautiful setting of the park, the route began at the famous Golden Gates and included stretches of woodland as well as open avenues between the trees. Ages of the participants ranged from four to over 80, and everyone was successful in finishing their route. Trophies were presented by Tanya Spilsbury, Managing Director of Highgate Sanctuary, the principal company currently working with Derbyshire County Council to seek a sustainable future for Elvaston Castle and grounds. The first person home in the two-mile run was 13-year-old Adam Boyd; the first person home in the five-miler was Stuart Dunn. For a full list of results see www.elvastonpc.org.uk

Your old cine film wanted for project ASTON on Trent Local History Group is on the look-out for old video or cine film which captures family moments, local events or even news stories. The group is working with the Media Archive for Central England (MACE) as part of a project to build up footage of times past to add to our local and nationwide heritage. The archive material will be used for research, screening and as a resource for schools, museums, history groups and communities. “There are probably thousands of feet of film in the area showing people at work and play, local activities, changing fashions, towns and villages,” said John Holloway from the History Group.

“Once footage is found, MACE will discuss the making of copies onto DVD with the owner and, where appropriate, make a copy available to the community – a real opportunity to relive your own history and contribute to the national research archive.” The history group is interested in film from local people from any era of the past. Items handed over will be securely passed to the MACE curators at Leicester University and, if accepted, a free DVD copy will be made for the donors. The project has only recently started so this is a real opportunity to get involved. Further details from Mr Holloway on 01332 792860.

Nature reserve volunteer gives Civic Society an insight MELBOURNE Civic Society heard a very interesting talk given by Nigel Slater, who is an enthusiastic volunteer at the Attenborough Nature Reserve at Beeston. As a local lad he had watched its development from disused gravel pits to the present haven for a remarkable variety of wildlife. Thanks to generous funding it now boasts a large visitors centre, which was opened by David Attenborough in 2005. He demonstrated with beautiful photographs the birds, plants, butterflies and fungi that could

be seen through the different seasons. He was a mine of information on aspects of bird life; terns fly to Gambia via Liverpool, Canada geese fly to Loch Ness just to shed their feathers, herons are great catchers of rats and coots migrate here in their thousands in winter. It is obviously a place on our doorstep that is well worth a visit. The next Melbourne Civic Society talk will be given by Dr Wendy Freer on Packroads and Packhorses on Monday, October 25, in The Leisure Centre at 7.30pm.

Garden club chairman remembered THE first meeting of the season for Ticknall Garden Club members began with a period of silence to remember David Meir, the chairman, who died recently. He worked tirelessly for the club and will be greatly missed. The AGM then followed, at the conclusion of which a full hall was given a slide show with lovely pictures and information about the wild flowers which grow in our coastal regions, and in heaths and fields and in water. The next meeting of the club will be on October 12 when Chris Beardshaw, the television and radio celebrity, will be the guest speaker.

Melbourne’s new jazz band proves it is tres Bon BON JAZZ, Melbourne’s latest musical venture, took the audience at Melbourne British Legion’s Royal Suite by storm and left the sell-out crowd desperately wanting to hear more. This was their first performance delivered on the back of only 12 weeks of rehearsals. Superbly led by 'Head Chef' Brendan O’Neill, the 21piece band comprising five trumpets, seven saxophones, four trombones and a five-piece rhythm section had the audience tapping and clapping along from the opening Phil Collins number and throughout their programme of more traditional swing numbers, interspersed with newer versions of old favourites. Bon Jazz have a bright future ahead of them and people wanting to hear them would be well advised to abandon all pre-conceived ideas before going to listen as their music will blow you away. "If we’re having fun, then the audience must be," seems to be Brendan’s motto and the combination of his riotous passion, manic conducting and high tempo introductions had the enthusiastic audience hooked. Bon Jazz are next playing at the revived British Legion’s Poppy Dance on Saturday, November 13. Get a ticket while you can. - A Heafield

Church a Hot House of musical entertainment PURE joy, a literally life-enhancing, uplifting evening, giving a thumping raspberry to all those moaning minnies who think our youth are rubbish. In the unlikely surroundings of the Melbourne Methodist Church, the Hot House Band gave me – and I am sure most who were there – an exhilarating evening's entertainment. It was joy to hear and to see the great joyous

playing of this small group of 25 players belting out the great jazz classics, so enthusiastically enjoying themselves, so clearly such great friends all together, revelling in their triumph, so pleased to please their audience, who were themselves plainly so enthralled by the band's verve and energy, and by their great playing. Under the energetic direction of Jon Eno, inspiring in his leadership, and charming in his joc-

ular rapport with his players, it really was a shame that there were still a few spare seats, and so few young people in the audience, to hear the inspirational offerings of such superbly talented and confident young people. The band is constantly changing, with many of them away to university this October, but Jon Eno has a host of new talent coming up. He is organising feeder bands throughout South

Derbyshire and doesn't seem the sort of guy who will let standards fall. Michelin Guides speak of places to visit as being 'worth a detour', or 'worth a journey'. The Hot House Band is definitely worth a journey. Melbourne Methodist Church may be an unlikely venue for a jazz gig, but it was warm on a cool evening, and had the benefit of nice comfortable padded seats. – DOB

This year's event outside of the Lychgate of All Saints Church was organised by villager Loral Aynsley with help from Ken. Ken's wife, Ann, took charge of the tea and biscuits on behalf of All Saints Church and stalls selling local goods were manned by teams from the WI, Well Dressers and the History Society. A special treat was provided by Liz Whittaker with her delicious home-made bread. Revenue generated from the sale of goods was directed to the WI, History Society and the church.

Fine start for rugby club MELBOURNE RFC has started the season in fine form. An influx of last year's U17 colts has seen good numbers at training and a serious competition for places in both the first and second XV. The 1st XV began with a home league game against Kesteven. The side, captained by Euan Holden again this year, saw the debuts of three of last years colts – Ollie Page, Jack Fisher and Jacob Watts. With a new look to the side, the oldest player in the starting XV was Kier Biggins at 27. An experienced bench was available if needed (average age of 38). Against a big Kesteven pack, Melbourne initially struggled in the scrummage but competed well at line out. They also played into a strong wind which made things a little difficult. Kesteven had all the early territory but missed a couple of early penalties. Melbourne stuck to their game plan, broke at pace and scored on the first three occasions that they entered the Kesteven half. With a decent half-time lead, and now playing with the wind behind them, Melbourne controlled the game in the second half and ran out 48-3 winners to clinch a bonus point win. Tries were scored by Jacob Watts, Kier Biggins, Tom Howard, Ash Corden, Ben Birchill and Ash

Stringer (2). Euan converted six. The following week saw a home league game against Worksop, last year’s ‘bogey’ team. This year was different. Melbourne ran out 48-0 winners for another bonus point win and go top of the league table on point difference. Tries were scored by Ash Stringer (3), Euan Holden, Ben Birchill, Ollie Page, Mark Rhodes and Euan Holden. The final Saturday of September saw the first XV lose an NLD Cup game at Ashbourne. Numerous changes disrupted the side, which lost 27-10. Morris Hall scored Melbourne’s try with five points for Holden. Melbourne will look forward to the re-matches in the league this year. The second XV have played twice in September. First up was a Pennant game against Belper and, despite leading 19-0 (two tries from Tom Cresswell and one from Tom Lines), Belper fought back to register a try, and a win from the last play of the game 19-24. The second XV saw six of last year's colts playing a part, but also lost skipper Dave Baker with a broken hand. The following week saw the second XV register a victory over Derby 4ths, again in the Pennant league. Tries from Chris Stark (2), veteran Andy Watts and Tom Lines with Tom kicking three conversions saw them home for a 26-12 win.

MELBOURNE Rugby Club held a gala ball – its first since 2004 – at Old Hall Farm in Swarkestone. A champagne reception greeted the 300-plus guests followed by a threecourse meal provided by Big On Taste. The guests were then entertained by the Ockbrook Big Brass Band, and a disco provided by Shane Thompson played into the early hours. The ball was held to raise funds for Melbourne Rugby Club, who continue in their efforts to raise the money to build a clubhouse at its ground on Cockshut Lane. The committee were hoping to exceed the last ball's profit of £5,000.

New twist to coaching MELBOURNE Minis and Juniors started their new rugby season with an unusual twist when for a change the coaches had a session being coached. After a busy first session with the boys and girls, 50 coaches became the pupils and had a coaching session on the latest law changes and techniques. Tim Wilbraham, coaching co-ordinator for the club, said: "At Melbourne we are committed to giving an excellent standard of coaching to the children and wanted to ensure we do the same for the coaches". The day certainly seemed to be a success as 95% of the coaches said that the training course should be repeated and 100% said that the course was good or excellent. Andrew Allman, chairman of the minis and Juniors, said:" We were very pleased that Alan Royer, a level 3 RFU Community Coach, offered to take this course for us. It was a great session and we are very grateful to him. We have seen good numbers of children joining again this year but would warmly welcome anyone at the club who would like to give Rugby a try". ■ MELBOURNE Under 15s Minxes started their season with a new look coaching team and a new

look training plan which had everyone smiling, even the parents who were asked to join in with the session. "I'm not a fan of drills in training and with the help of Alan Royer, our Regional Development Officer I have managed to find great ways to teach rugby in a way to make everyone smile. We use SAQ and games which can be tailored to teach the players certain skills needed to play rugby," said Nick Woodland. One parent said: "It was great to feel part of the team and have a chance to see what my daughter will be doing which isn't always obvious from the sidelines. Both players and parents were invited into the clubhouse to make a season plan which is new for me but made the parents and players feel involved in the team, the way it would be run and most of all to set goals for all of us to try and meet." Melbourne RFC welcomes girls of all ages and offers year 11-plus the chance to play within a girls-only team which is not offered by all local rugby clubs. Village Voice Postbag Hope for the Monument MELBOURNE Civic Society hopes that there will soon be a satisfactory resolution to the problem of ownership and responsibility for the Monument in Castle Square, which was highlighted in last month's Village Voice. It recognizes that it is an important part of Melbourne's heritage since it commemorates the historic 1832 Great Reform Act when the right to vote was extended and parliamentary constituencies were reformed. In view of the present tight budgetary constraints on Authorities, the Civic Society is very willing to offer assistance with funding any refurbishment. It also urges the need to verify the rather alarmist fear that the structure is unsafe. Let us hope that some tender loving care will restore the Monument to its rightful status as a landmark in Melbourne's rich history. Pam Adams, Secretary, Melbourne Civic Society

Thanks for Festival help WE would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped to make Melbourne Festival a success again this year. Our hosts, the Friends of Melbourne Festival, sponsors, helpers, the Army Cadets and everyone who came along and bought tickets. This year we sold over 1,000 concert tickets and, having cancelled two concerts due to low ticket sales, we have broken even. The Trail sold a similar number of tickets to 2009 and with this, combined with a generous donation of £1,000 from Cllr John Harrison's Derbyshire County Council Community Leadership Allowance, we can now start planning for 2011. Next year's Trail dates are 17th and 18th September. It was great to see so many local businesses busy over the weekend and our local clubs, churches and charities raised over £5,000 by providing refreshments to visitors to the Trail. So thank you everyone who supported Melbourne Festival. Sharon Brown and Phil Dobby.

Dog fouling shock I AM new to the area and am astounded by the dog fouling issue in the area, particularly on pavements. I have never seen so much 'dog mess' on pavements in the areas I have lived in previously. The problem is not confined to pavements, as many grassy areas seem to suffer the same problem. We are lucky enough to live in such an idyllic area which is spoilt by inconsiderate others. It is particularly annoying to me as I am a dog owner, albeit a RESPONSIBLE one who always picks up their dog's mess. Dog owners, PLEASE, PLEASE carry a suitable bag with you when you are out with your dog and do the right thing, PICK UP THE MESS. Stop spoiling Melbourne. A concerned resident and dog owner.

Feeling at home here MY wife and I moved into this little jewel on Sunday, August 1, this year thanks to the kindness of a son of Melbourne, Robert FarellBrunt, better known to many of you as Rob Brunt. We brought with us little Oscar, a German shepherd pup without a brain whose sole aim in life seems to be to eat us out of house and home. I haven’t yet had to pawn my car, but it’s a close run thing, watch this space! We only moved from Derby where we kept a conservative social club, Jackie, my wife as the steward and myself as the catering manager before being made redundant. When a homeless hostel was built directly opposite the club, drunks and general ne’er do wells abounded in the vicinity, defecating and urinating every day behind the club walls, so we arrived here with a somewhat jaundiced view of our fellow man. On our first full day in the village we took Oscar a walk up to the cricket field. What should have been a five-minute stroll became a half hour trek. Everyone we met said hello, everyone wanted to stroke him, not one of those lovely people was carrying a can of extra strong lager, nor did they ask us to “borrow them a fag” and amazingly no-one tried to mug us! Neither of us are naïve enough to believe that even this lovely little village doesn’t have an undesirable element, but Jackie summed it up when she commented to me that it was just like Ireland. I was born and bred in Ulster and have taken Jackie there many times, in spite of its recent troubles and leaving out the ridiculous bigotry, the people on the whole are lovely, lively people and for her to say what she did about Melbourne was the ultimate compliment. I’ve always wanted to retire in Northern Ireland, but due to circumstances, that will never be possible. This little piece of England is at least as good, if not better. So if you happen to glimpse a scruffy old F*rt wandering about smiling, (No it’s not Robin the pharmacist) just congratulate yourselves, it'll be me. Take a bow people of Melbourne and thank you all, we feel at home here. Dave and Jackie Barton of Hope Street.

Another on-off StArt for rAngerS TICKNALL Rangers FC have started the 2010/11 season as they finished the last with some indifferent displays. They began the season with a 2-0 away win against Marlborough Western Rovers with Ben Dale and Matt Archer the scorers, but followed this up with a 4-0 defeat in the Challenge Cup against premier side Uttoxeter Town. Two goals down at half-time to The Seal Inn at home in the League Cup, Ticknall staged an amazing comeback with goals from an Ian Hall volley, a Vinny Hallifield tap-in and a header by Skipper Kevin Earp securing the win. A disappointing 4-0 home defeat by The

Angel was soon forgotten as Rangers ended the month with a stunning 6-1 win against New Inn Wanderers. Player-manager Alex Slater led the way with a hat-trick along with Mark Nixon, a superb individual goal by Steve Byram and an astonishing goal by goalkeeper Ben Newton whose kick travelled the whole length of the pitch and bounced in. STREAMLINE have had a difficult start to the season losing all four of their games. They began with a 3-2 loss to Eyewash Hotel with Williams and Hoyle getting the consolations. This was followed with a crushing 11-2 de-

feat versus Half Crown with Woods and Tebbatt getting on the scoresheet. The month with a 7-2 setback against West Hallam and a 7-1 defeat to Sandiacre Reds with Woods, Williams and Hoyle the scorers. THE BLUE BELL have started badly in the league losing their opening game 6-0 against Codnor but finished the month with a stunning County Cup win. A Michael Bestwick strike was not enough as The Bell went down 2-1 to Spondon but a Jack Havron hattrick aided by goals from Jack Tivey and Andy Brailsford saw them through to the next round of the cup at the expense of Allestree Vintage.

OSMASTON Park was raining goals as the MUFC Under 11 Blue Sox season came to life when they hit the opposition for 14 goals, in a very one-sided encounter against Heanor Staffs. A fine early strike from Fraser Radcliffe got the goals rolling, while good defensive work from Jacob Smith and Adam Danby, with Fraser Radcliffe holding the middle, kept the opposition at bay from the odd attack that broke through. Goalkeeper Jacob Murrock had virtually nothing to do for the whole game, but James Payne peppered the Heanor goal and was just one goal away from a double hat-trick by half-time. The second half continued

Darius Fern slotted in a lovely free kick from 20 yards to get his first of the season and James kept rattling the net with his 10thgoal securing a deserved matchball for a record tally at this level. ■ IN September 2009 the new Melbourne United Under 8s –10 lads from Melbourne and Etwall – enjoyed a thumping 9-2 vic-

tory in their first match. For most of the lads and the rookie management partnership of Mark Jackaman and Steve Spare, this was the clichéd 'fairytale start to a roller-coaster season' in the Derby Mini League. After 22 games and 78 goals the season drew to a very satisfying conclusion. The principles of playing in a non-competitive league are simple: to have fun, play fair and to develop the skills of the boys individually and as a team. With-

out exception each player grew in confidence and ability – the fun element has been a natural by-product. For this coming season, now in the Under 9s category, the team (and indeed many of their parents) are looking forward to the competitive element being introduced officially. Cricket club’s season ends in a disappointing style MELBOURNE Town Cricket Club completed its 2010 season with a whimper as the 1st XI finished in fifth position and the seconds in eighth. The first team finished the month with a win and two draws starting with a clinical victory at home to Stanton 1st Xl. Brilliant bowling spells of 4-13 by Ben Newton and 3-20 by skipper Alex Slater saw the visitors shot out for a paltry 47 which Town knocked off for the loss of no wickets to give them a stunning 10-wicket win. Away to Rolleston, despite four wickets from Andy Potts and three for Slater, the home side racked up 259-9. Melbourne were solid in reply, finishing on 187-7 with Mark Rossi hitting 73, aided by 41 from keeper Russell Allaway. Melbourne finished their season away to the promoted Swarkestone second team, who hit 242 all out with three wickets apiece for Mick Meakin (the leading wicket taker in the league with 50), Alex Slater (second highest wicket taker with 42) and Andy Potts. Town batted out for a draw which prevented Swarkestone from winning the league with top run scorer Mark Rossi hitting an outstanding 91

and Slater 39, batting 29 overs to claim the draw and spoil the home side’s party. Melbourne Seconds ended the season with two disappointing displays, losing both their league games. At home to Brailsford thirds, the visitors hit 221-9 with veteran Steve Price taking 6-57. In reply Melbourne were shot out for just 85 with Price top-scoring on 21. The seconds were all out for just 46 away to Derby Congs thirds despite Mike Starkie hitting nearly half of them with 21. Congs secured an eight-wicket win with Dan Marshall taking the only two wickets to fall. This concluded another good season for the club both on and off the field with the playing side going from strength to strength. The Under 11s nearly doubled in size and, with the start of the under 13s, the future looks in good hands, especially with the 150th anniversary coming up next season. Finally the club would like to thank all their ball and board sponsors for the season and this month’s sponsors, who were Ashley Adams and The Welcome Cafe.

SPORT Bus service for Derby County supporters THERE have been requests to organise a private bus from Melbourne to Pride Park for Derby County FC home matches. A bus already operates from the Bridge Inn at Chellaston, but if there is sufficient demand the Chellaston service can be extended to begin at Melbourne and return to Melbourne after games. The bus drops passengers off at the entrance to the football ground, arriving there about 15 minutes before kick-off. If there is adequate support for the scheme a convenient pick-up and drop-off point will be arranged at Melbourne. Any football fans who are interested in this service, should contact Dave Allsopp on 01332 704090 or mobile 07967 640547

Dynamoes (back row) Paul Harvey (trainer), Danny Guild, Carl Allsop, Andrew Smethurst, Dave Brough, Ben Newton, Rob Brough, Jack Havron, Ryan McLoughlin, Tommy Moulton; (front) Gaz Annable, Paul Swallow, Alan Buxton (manager), Lee Scott (skipper), Gavin Salsbury (manager), Alex Slater and John Mills.

It’s a four-star show for the Dynamoes MELBOURNE Dynamoes have recaptured their stunning form from last season winning four of their five league games and climbing the table to sixth place by the end of the month. They began September away to top of the table Willington and a superb team performance earned them a resounding 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Alex Slater, Skipper Lee Scott and John Mills. This was followed by a lacklustre 2-0 away loss at Rowsley but was soon forgotten as Dynamoes beat local rivals Chellaston 31 in their first home game of the season with Slater (2) and Scott getting on the score-

sheet. Then came another 3-1 home win, this time against Sandiacre Town. A Danny Guild tap-in, a clinical Dave Brough finish and a bullet header by Slater completed the scoring. The team ended the month with a 3-0 win away to Ashover with a Carl Allsopp header, a screamer by Gaz Annable and an Alex Slater corner going straight in to achieve a complete turnaround in the team's performances. The Reserves, however, have shown indifferent form winning just two of their five games in September and losing the other three. They began the month with a brief stay

at the top of the table thanks to a 1-0 away win at Derby Singh Brothers, leading goalscorer Alex Slater getting the only goal. But this was followed by a disappointing 21 away defeat to Mickleover R.B.L.Reserves in the Challenge Cup with Farrell Scott getting the consolation. This was forgotten a week later following a superb 6-2 win away to Bargate Rovers Reserves in the Junior Cup with Neil Redfern hitting a brace along with goals from Farrell Scott, a Vinny Hallifield thunderbolt plus clinical finishes by Jack Tivey and Tom Jennings. The Reserves finished the month with two 1-0 defeats to Woolley Moor United and Pastures Reserves.

TICKNALL ARE BACK IN THE BIG TIME TICKNALL Cricket Club are back in the Derbyshire Premier League having being relegated two years ago. They had looked firm contenders for most of the season and did not lose a game from July 10. They were constantly chased by both local rivals Swarkestone and Rolls-Royce for the second promotion place – a position that wasn’t resolved until the final weekend of the season. With Ticknall's batsmen chasing a modest total of 80, they

slumped to 20-4 before Paul Borrington and Shahid Khan rescued the situation to see them back in the Premiership for the 2011 season. This was a great effort from everyone involved at the club. It will be Rolls-Royce joining Ticknall in the premier league having had an exceptional last weekend of the season and pipping Swarkestone by one point.
