ACADEMY biD for sChool? "WE have been asking for years for changes to the funding formula, but nothing has happened, and we are frustrated that, for 15 years, Chellaston School has been at the bottom of the funding stream in Derby schools,” said Ray Ruszczynski, Head Teacher. It is for this reason that he and the governors of the school have responded positively to the new Government's invitation sent to all schools in England to convert to Academy status, and are studying the detail of the proposals. Mr Ruszczynski explained that the main incentive in seeking conversion to Academy status is the attraction of the additional funding, which would be available to the school, as the current "top slice" retained by the Local Authority would be given to the school. The new Government's intention is that Academy status will give greater freedom and flexibility, helping schools to raise standards and give students greater opportunities. Mr Ruszczynski said: "At Chellaston School students receive approximately £2,100 less per head than the best funded students in the city, and we have far more money held back by the Local Authority than we receive in services. We feel that this is both inefficient and unfair to our students.” Chellaston was first opened in 1977, and it has had the benefit of stability, having only two head teachers – Mr Thomas and Mr Ruszczynski, in that time. Originally a Derbyshire LEA school, it was transferred to the Derby City education authority, and has been a Specialist Technology College since 1994. A well regarded and successful school, Chellaston has set up a National Challenge Trust arrangement with Sinfin Community School. The school has 1,720 students. Mr Ruszcznski is anxious to scotch the 'rumours and misinformation', with regard to the catchment area of the school, which has always been a worry to the parents of students who live in South Derbyshire. He is adamant: "There are no plans whatsoever to change the normal catchment area, nor are there plans to use selection.” TM
MELBOURNE Carnival was a big day for Joe and Paddy Laban. They were riding high in an open topped limosine leading the parade. The lifetime residents were invited to open the carnival in recognition of their services over many years. "It was the first time we have really seen the carnival.” said Paddy. "We have always been too busy with the floats and lorries before. We've had a wonderful time." There were large numbers of people lining the streets as the parade made its way from Castle Square to the school playing field on Packhorse Road through the town. ❍ Fun in the sun – more pictures and report on the Carnival on Pages 12 and 13.

Armed Forces Day attracts 100-plus to church THE Vicar of Melbourne, the Revd. Dr. John Davies led a short service in Melbourne Parish Church to support the members of the Armed Forces serving all over the world. The congregation was well over 100 strong, and was representative of the many organisations of the town. The service was held as part of the national British Armed Forces Day. Dr. Davies in his introductory remarks said: "The service is in support of the Forces of the Crown serving throughout the world, part of a national day to pay tribute to the courage and determination of the armed forces. The Forces often feel cut off from popular support, and are little valued ... but this day is held to remember those alive and in
conflict." Each member of the congregation was asked to sign a letter – "a tangible proof of our regard for the courage and determination of our armed forces". A similar letter was sent from last year's Armed Forces Day, held in Melbourne, and Dr. Davies said that he had received a very warm letter of acknowledgement from a Mercian Regiment chaplain. After the introductory comments, the service consisted of a very moving prayer, two hymns, a New Testament reading, and a rendering of Gwahoddiad by the Melbourne Male Voice Choir. It was a fine community event. – DOB
Crime reports for month of June
‘Explore and Draw’ day at Calke
IN June there were 11 instances of crime reported in Melbourne including attempted burglary, burglary, theft, damage and criminal damage. Additionally, there were 12 incidents reported including three reports of a suspicious male trying car doors and 10 instances of anti-social behaviour. Melbourne Neighbourhood Watch wishes to remind local people of the need to be vigilant with open windows and doors, especially during the warm weather. Also, because incidents of vehicle crime have been associated with unsecured vehicles, people are reminded to be extra careful with vehicles and contents. If you see any suspicious activities please notify the police, no matter how trivial the matter may seem.
CALLING budding artists of all ages and abilities! The National Trust's Calke Abbey is holding another special 'Explore and Draw' day on Saturday, July17, from 11am until 3.30pm. Visitors will have the freedom to draw or paint anything that inspires them around the lovely gardens, which are bursting with beautiful blooms and towering trees. Volunteers will be on hand to loan basic art materials from a gazebo in the garden. This event ties in with the National Garden Scheme Open Day – a UK-wide charity fund raising day where all proceeds will be donated to help train National Trust Heritage Gardeners of the future. The Explore and Draw activity will be free of charge, but donations for the National Garden Scheme Open Day will be gratefully welcomed.

TWO local men hit milestone birthdays this year and marked the occasions by helping a cause close to their hearts. The father and son duo from Melbourne asked friends and family to donate money to local life saving charity Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) instead of buying them gifts. Dennis Edwards celebrated his 80th birthday and his son, Nigel Edwards, celebrated his 50th. Between them they raised £745. Dennis said: “You get to our age and don’t really want anything, so asking people to donate to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance seemed a good idea. The charity provides a vital service and living in a rural area it's good to know that it is there. “We often see it flying around and it is good to know that it is on its way to help someone in need." Shirley Edwards, wife of Dennis, and Nigel's wife Jayne popped in to see the helicopter and crew at their East Midlands base and also present the cheque on behalf of their husbands. Catherine Foster, fund-raiser for the DLRAA, said: “It was so kind of Dennis and

How distriCt CounCil Can manage £59m debt FINANCE is a truly baffling matter. The South Derbyshire District Council is quite prepared, even in these straitened times, to take on £59million of debt! And the councillors gave it virtually a unanimous thumbs-up, at a full council meeting in late June. This mind boggling figure – roughly £600 per person in the district – could be taken out with the full blessing of the new Government. Although the proposal was put to councils by the last Government, the new local government minister is quoted as saying that "these proposals give councils the financial freedom they need and represent value for money". The whole basis of the proposals made, which South Derbyshire would welcome if given the go-ahead, lies in the bizarre and byzantine complexity of housing policy going back over many years. As things have stood for several years, councils like South Derbyshire have managed their housing on the basis that a third of all council rents – currently a total of £9.7million – are taken by central government. This has been going on for years, hobbling the council's ability to finance improvements to the property estate, and making new house building impossible. The policy was based on the fact that this money taken each year by central government was re-distributed to council areas who had large run-down estates, and needed considerable housing subsidies, funded by more affluent and better managed local authorities like South Derbyshire. The taking by central government of such huge slices of the rental income was set to continue and the amounts to increase, with a calculated cost of £135million over 30 years. In addition, the majority of the sale proceeds of council houses was directed also to the coffers of the Treasury. The proposals made by the Government in March have been
circulated to councils throughout England. South Derbyshire is happy to take on the debt, but some councils may not be able to do so – so the final outcome of the consultation process will not be known for some months. The reason why South Derbyshire can take on the huge debt is because the interest on the loan will, over 30 years, be lower than the current onerous subsidy payments. In addition, the council will be able to retain all the rental payments, which will enable much greater freedom to manage the housing estate. In addition, any sale of council housing, under the Right to Buy scheme, will remain in the council's hands-subject to 75% being allocated towards new affordable housing. It is calculated that, apart from making more finance available for general purposes, the council will be able to develop 50 or more affordable homes. The financial officers at the district council, in a detailed 18page closely argued document, and following "a complex and technical accounting process" recognise that the council is taking on "a high level of debt for a considerable period". but that the proposals from the government do offer "a viable alternative" to the current system, seen by many to be unfair. Councillor John Harrison, finance chief at the district council, said: “With the present arrangement clearly unsustainable, and a desire to improve further the housing stock, the council gave unanimous all-party support, but in principle only, pending the new Government's detailed reaction to the responses from other councils around the country. “Should the conclusion be to proceed, the heavy burden of repaying this debt, over an estimated maximum of 30 years, will not fall on Council Tax payers but will be wholly funded out of the rental income received.” – DOB
Comedy night is a barrel of laughs FOR those who attended the comedy night in June at the Royal Suite, Melbourne RBL Club they had a real treat with an evening of first class comedy and said by many to be 'the best yet'. Praise indeed for the three acts and for the organisers who continue to provide quality entertainment for the Melbourne public.
Skipping the first night of the World Cup and going out for the evening was definitely the best choice as the three very different acts entertained their audience. Paul Sinha, the first Asian stand-up act to visit Melbourne, treated everyone to a fresh look at comedy from a different perspective.
The only way to describe Alan Hudson was magic. That was his theme and he delivered it well. Headline act Nick Revell proved why he was top of a very good bill by delivering a faultless first class act. The show was compered by Kiwi, Nick Rado.

WELCOME to Sahara UK. The weather forecasters have said today that the first half of 2010 has been the driest since 1929 – that’s 81years. The feature that did most damage in April and May was the low temperatures, not the drought. That reduced growth in everything be it field or hedgerow and has left farmers, particularly livestock farmers scratching their heads in dismay as to what to do. Silage and hay crops are down by 20/30 percent and we face the prospect of having to start to use these stocks very soon as grass in the fields is disappearing in front of our eyes. I delayed our second crop of silage for a few days and I estimate that on some of the drier areas it lost over 30 per cent of its yield in that time. That grass looked like standing hay. All livestock tends to do well in conditions like this, so long as they have plenty of shade and water but they cannot produce growth and milk without good food. Cows tend to be lethargic like humans when it’s hot and the best part of the day for them is between dusk and breakfast. The uplands of Derbyshire and Staffordshire are not usually bothered by drought, but friends I have up there tell me they are worst affected. They
have had nothing but drizzle since March and, combined with very low temperatures, this has seen very poor growth of their only crop of grass. The saviour for us at home will be maize, which is literally romping away at the moment and, as long as it has no weed competition, it should continue. Cereal harvest will inevitably be brought forward by these conditions, and I do not think we will be in for record yields judging by the looks of some of the fields. On some of the thinner and sandier areas crops of wheat particularly are looking very scorched and it’s unlikely that the grain will have filled out very well. Amounts of straw will be very low. No matter what we are told we are now in a drought and judging by the water level in the reservoir, restrictions on water use are now bound to happen in some areas. In the first week of July, Staunton Harold Reservoir has dropped more than six inches, which is an awful lot of water, and I assume taking water from the Dove at Burton to fill it has stopped. Being a pessimist and a planner I am wondering when the weather will change and how it will affect our work. We could have a wet harvest!

Peak performance from Edward YOUNG Edward Hames, just 15, triumphed in his quest to meet the challenge of the Three Peaks, and has raised a large amount - so far over £7,000. As featured in June's Village Voice, Edward wanted to make his individual contribution to the memory of his father, Richard, by completing a really tough challenge, and inviting contributions to two research charities. Boosted by the donations from hundreds of
friends and relatives, Edward achieved the great challenge to make some significant contribution to the Sarcoma Trust, and Leukaemia Research. Some experienced walkers thought it was too great a test of endurance, courage and stamina for a boy only just 15 years old, but Edward has triumphantly proved them wrong, completing the challenge within only a few minutes of the 24-hour deadline.

Get set to feel impact of the national cuts DISTRICT and County Councillor John Harrison updated the Parish Council on district and county budgets. He told the meeting: “Impacts are seen to be negligible during this financial year – no cuts are proposed to the District Council, whilst the County Council will see circa £8m revenue and capital budget reduction." Cllr Harrison advised “a comprehensive spending review is to be accomplished by October and all signs are that which the council will have to play its part in managing part of the national deficit." Queen’s Birthday honour for Paul HONOURED in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours was Professor Rodney Paul Sturges, who received an OBE “for services to libraries across the UK and abroad”. He is better known locally as plain Paul Sturges, a resident of Melbourne and Stanton by Bridge for 36 years. Paul has been moved by the number of congratulations he has received from all over the world following the announcement of his award but his modest response is “that it is an award shared with all those people that I have co-operated with. It’s all about team work.” A native of Derby, Paul first worked for the Shropshire County Library before taking up a post lecturing in librarianship at Loughborough University in 1974, a move that brought him and wife Claire to live in Melbourne. He became a member of the Melbourne Civic Society and was chairman from 1980 to 84 when he went with his family – wife Claire and daughters (Harriet and Isabel) – to live and work in Botswana. Lecturing at the university in Gaborone, the capital city, Paul travelled to the rural area, meeting people, getting to know the problems and looking for local solutions. Paul wrote a book about this period titled “The Quiet Struggle: Information and Libraries for the people of Africa”, which is about the struggle for information and knowledge. Since he returned to Loughborough Paul has been closely associated with freedom of expression particularly in third world countries and especially in Africa acknowledging that libraries contain lots of information and resources that can help people if they can access that information. He has travelled extensively all over the world during the last 20 years lecturing, teaching and researching in many locations with his main topic, Freedom of Expression. He became a professor in 2002 and from 2003 to 2009 was chairman of the International Federation of Library Associations Freedom of Expression Committee, an honorary post that involved lots of travel and talking. Paul is still travelling, most recently to Washington, USA, to give a presentation as Professor Emeritus from Loughborough University, but he is always glad to be home and is happy living in Stanton and looking
Mystery of the arisaemas revealed ARISAEMAS – what on earth are they you ask? Des Martin of Mozart House Nursery in Wigston explained it all to the members of Ticknall Garden Club at their June meeting. Des last visited the club in 2002 when he gave a fascinating talk on the subject of bamboos. He gave an equally fascinating talk on the subject of the arisaema, which does not have a traditional flower. In fact it could be described as rather weird, not unlike the arum or cuckoo pint, which has variously striped spathes enclosing the spadix – the working part of the flower. It is similar in looks to the pitcher plant but does not eat insects. There are 150 species around the world to be found in northern Europe, central and east Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Taiwan, Japan and Siberia. There are also some sub species in the USA. Des has been interested in arisaemas for about 12 years and his talk concentrated on those in northern Europe. He had samples of different types with him which he explained and passed round the audience. He explained that some are evergreen and some deciduous and the latter can be grown here. Des gave information about conditions and care as well as how to propagate. Arisaemas fit in well among shade and woodland plants and need well-drained soil. There were arisaemas, ferns and other shade-loving plants for sale at the end of the evening. –PB ■ MEMBERS of the garden club went to visit gardens in Kent and Sussex for their annual holiday. The club had been to this area three years ago but as there are so many lovely gardens there another visit was agreed. On the way to Pembury the members visited the RHS gardens at Wisley. While in Kent members spent afternoons at Wakehurst Place and Nymans, and mornings at the very beautiful, private Bankton Cottage and Clifton Hall Gardens. All of this in warm, sunny weather. On the return journey a stop was made at Hatfield House where Queen Elizabeth 1st spent much of her childhood. – Patricia Bricknell

Counting down to the Melbourne Fish Bar Melbourne Festival THIS month we have enjoyed Melbourne Carnival and the countdown is now on for Melbourne Festival. It’s hard to believe that the event is now into its sixth year and a firm fixture in the local calendar. This year Melbourne Festival concerts and performances run from September 11 to 25, with the Art and Architecture Trail taking place over the middle weekend, September 18,19. The 2009 festival was very successful, with approximately 4,000 visitors during the Trail Weekend. This year’s Festival will build on the best features from previous years with lots of new additions to keep the event fresh. The performance programme will include music, drama, comedy and a combination of all three! The programme starts with blues singer Dani Wilde – predicted to become a household name after her new album comes out in August. Other unmissable events are Andra Sparks, Idle Hands, Camp David and the Hothouse Big Band, and at the other end of the spectrum are the Sitwell Singers or Musica Donum Dei and a festival favourite “Come and Sing”. Those who prefer the spoken word shouldn't miss My Brilliant Divorce starring Debbie Kelly in a one-woman show or the Melbourne Comedy Club.
There have been an incredible number of applications from artists for this year’s Art and Architecture Trail and vistors can be guaranteed to see a broad spectrum of work by the most talented artists in the Midlands. Other treats on the trail include installations in collaboration with the Arts Council sponsored Re:place scheme featuring work by Kate Genever and Flora Gardner. Music will feature over the Trail weekend and taking things one step further this year the 1623 Theatre Company are bringing The Great Shakespearean Workout 2010 to Melbourne at the Bill Shone Leisure Centre at 4pm on Saturday September18. The Great Shakespearean Workout 2010 is based on the language and characters of Troilus and Cressida, Shakespeare's only play inspired by the mythology of Ancient Greece, birthplace of the Olympic Games - feel free to join in! The beat of Shakespeare's verse provides the pulse for a series of fun exercises developed by 1623 Theatre Company in association with Royal Derby Hospital and "air: arts to aid wellbeing". Exercises are inspired by aerobics, kung fu, tai chi and yoga. The 1623 Theatre Company were awarded the prestigious London 2012 Inspire Mark so don’t miss out when the 2012 Olympics come to Melbourne.

● Members of the Melbourne Girl Guiding movement make it ‘100’ to celebrate their century.
MATTHEW NEEDHAM SOLICITOR & PARTNER AT
SOLICITORS IN a year ram-packed with celebrations to mark the 100th year of Girlguiding in the UK, the Melbourne Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Leaders gathered at the Melbourne Fire Station in June to create a fantastic reminder of this important year by forming a '100' of people. The girls will each be given a copy of the photo as a memento of all of the great activities they have experienced this year. Some of the activities that the girls have enjoyed this year have included a weekend at the PGL adventure centre and a trip to Drayton Manor Park for a regional celebration with 10,000 other Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. The Rainbows have 'gone wild' at Chester Zoo and two groups went to London for the day. At the Melbourne Carnival they entered 'HMS Centenary' a carnival float consisting of two lorries with over 100 girls taking part. There are activities still to come with the Brownies and Guides going to Lea Green in September to celebrate with others from all around the county and there is also a Brownie holiday booked for September. THE new chairman of South Derbyshire District Council, Cllr Neil Atkin, said he was ‘excited and honoured’ to be attending the Trooping the Colour ceremony at the Horse Guards Parade in
The biggest event this year for the Guides will be the Peak 2010 camp at Chatsworth Park where the Guides, together with the Melbourne Scouts and over 6,000 campers from all over the world, will have a fantastic opportunity to try out lots of different activities from Abseiling to Water Divining and everything in between! To do all of these activities, the local units rely on a large number of volunteers who give up their time to enable the girls to have these fantastic experiences. The units are always in need of volunteers and are currently looking for help. If any of the above activities sounds great to you and you might be interested in getting involved in local guiding, please give Michelle a call on 01332 862037 for more details. She will be delighted to hear from you. ■ Bob Neill, a local pyrographer, has created a special wooden plaque to celebrate the 100 years of Guiding and he will be appearing at a number of Guide camps this year with his workshop and with plaques to sell. He can be contacted on 01332 792036.
London to celebrate the Queen’s official birthday. Before the event Cllr Atkin said: “This day was a huge opportunity for the whole nation to show its appreciation to the Queen. I am
proud to represent those families who serve in the Armed Forces from South Derbyshire and those individuals who wish to send Her Majesty best wishes for her birthday.”

MELBOURNE played host to the visiting Pinders Circus Company in June. The circus set up its big top at the recreation ground and opened its doors to entertain the people of Melbourne, presenting a people-only show with an international cast of performers, mainly from Eastern Europe. The circus was very well received and Circus Master Mike Lea was very enthusiastic about the short stay in Melbourne.
He said: “Things went exceptionally well and we received lots of favourable comments from those attending. People liked the ‘Live’ entertainment.” He went on to thank the parish council for its support, adding that they would like to come back. The circus is currently engaged in a 36week tour and when finished the performers will go off and do their own thing. When the circus starts its 2011 tour it is likely that it will be a completely new show with a new cast. Pictured at the first night performance are Josh Smith, Sam Cox, Michael Rennocks, Catherine Cooke, Jake Smith, Sophie Harvey and circus clown Niko Nicolinno.
Gail How, secretary of the Neighbourhood Watch, said “the award is gratefully received and will support local communications to an ever-increasing membership”. Sgt Andy Sutherland provided an update on crime figures for the area. Whilst acknowledging that there had been a stark rise in local crimes in Melbourne post-April, the prior comparator figures with the three months of 2009 February-April showed a decline in crimes of 37%. Sgt Sutherland said: “Over the last 12-month period crimes are at three to four per 1,000 residents for Area 3, which includes Melbourne, Aston, Weston, Shardlow, Thulston, Elvaston, Barrow-on-Trent and Smisby. Compared with other Derbyshire areas this remains a low crime area. "The increase in crimes in Melbourne seen in May/June was believed to be a culmination of the recent warm weather, insecure properties and opportunistic thieves taking advantage whilst people are on holidays, in some cases taking car keys and stealing cars as well as personal possessions." The next Safer Neighbourhood Area Meeting is at Melbourne Leisure Centre at 6.30pm on Tuesday, September 14. – S.Blatch

The Legend really has only just started LEFT: Lord Ralph Kerr presents the Lothian Trophy to the Legends skipper Steve Price. ABOVE: Current and past players of Melbourne Cricket Club gather before the start of the Legends game.
THE biggest crowd in living memory turned up to watch a Melbourne Legends XI play the current Development XI on an extremely sunny Sunday. The match was organised by the Melbourne Town Cricket Club to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the original gift of the cricket field to the people of Melbourne by Lord Walter Kerr. It was quite fitting that his great grandson, Lord Ralph Kerr, attended the match. The Legends team, organised by former fast bowler Steve Price, included wicketkeeper and opening bat Neil Lovell, who was visiting from Cyprus. Legends players had to be over the age of 35 and, playing loose with the rules of cricket, had 16 team members, all of whom batted, bowled and fielded. Generations of current and past Melbourne cricketers also came to watch the match and reminisce with old cricket colleagues. Many took along old team photographs to see who they could collectively recall. The oldest cricketer to attend was Frank Heafield (90), who had played for the club in the early 1950s. Players who had represented the club in the six decades since were there happily debating how cricket had changed since their particular era. Three generations of the Potts family played in the match, club chairman Tel Potts and son Dave both played for the Legends with Tel’s eight-yearold grandson Harry playing for the Development XI. Andy Heafield, Development XI skipper, brought Harry on to bowl at both his father and grandfather and he took both wickets – Tel, leg before wicket and father Dave, bowled. The Development XI had Andy Heafield playing with sons Matthew and James with grandfather Fred, a former batsman and wicketkeeper, watching. Everywhere you looked there were current and former players: Malcom Spare, Roy Grummitt, Dennis Dunnicliffe, Rodney Heafield, Mark Winters, Alan Bradley, Nick Carter, Stuart Pegg, Colin Wakefield, Ken Grant, Alex Slater, Mike Starkie and Lennie Barber to name a few. In a touching moment, the daughters of the big hitting and sadly deceased Bas Farmer turned up to represent him at the occasion. With fours, sixes and wickets being celebrated

SUBSCRIPTION FREE with blasts of rock music it was a great day for the cricket club. The occasion was complemented by Alma Inn landlord James Cripps successfully running the bar with the assistance of fine beer and ciders from the Leatherbritches Brewery in Ashbourne. In some ways the cricket was a sideshow to the cricketing reunion. With some fine batting performances the Legends XI were all out for 190. In reply the Development XI came very close, falling short by three runs. The Lothian Trophy was presented to the winning captain by Lord Ralph Kerr, who said: “Can I say how honoured we feel that the trophy is named in honour of our family in commemoration of the gift of land to the people of Melbourne for recreation and sport in 1920. My great grandfather would, I think, have been delighted that the cricket club has used the ground since then, as are we.” Winning captain, Steve Price, on accepting the trophy, challenged his opposing skipper to a rematch in 2011 which was enthusiastically accepted. The Legend, it appears, will live on and become a yearly match.
Midsummer event at hall
Walkers success
ON the evening of June 18 Melbourne Civic Society held their annual Midsummer Social Event at Melbourne Hall. Members of the Society, along with their invited guests, enjoyed a stroll in the gardens of Melbourne Hall followed by a delicious cold buffet prepared by Barbara Simpson and Claire Sturges, who are two members of the committee.
INITIAL figures suggest over 1,200 walkers donned their boots for walks across South Derbyshire, East Staffordshire and parts of Leicestershire during this year’s National Forest Walking Festival, a 20 percent increase on 2009. Feedback was very positive.

Chair man Peter
Strawberry fun day
MELBOURNE Civic Society members were entertained to a fascinating demonstration of chair making by Ticknall-based craftsman and greenwood worker, Peter Wood. Peter's theme was the "Art of the Chair Bodger" and he had with him a full size pole lathe, shaving horse and tool set used to make Windsor chairs. During the demonstration he showed how to make chair spindles out of recently cut local ash on the pole lathe. Peter also described the history of chair making, the 19th century mass production of chairs and the hard life of the poorly paid chair bodger. Mr Wood runs courses from his workshop in Spring Wood near Staunton Harold and has recently been involved in a community event in Ticknall involving the construction of three wooden benches which have been publicly sited.
PUPILS at Melbourne Infants School took part in a competition to find the juiciest strawberry. Pupils had planted strawberry plants that had been donated by Swarkestone Nursery and watered them every day. The project was headed up by Mrs Reed, class teacher, and was fun for the children to participate in. It also helped the school to achieve ECO Silver Status. Pupils are pictured with teacher and ECO co-ordinator Mrs Reed and Gina Walker, parent and ECO supporter, admiring some of the strawberry plants.
Athenaeum worker Zoe building links with the schools ZOE Dean, the Youth Worker for the Athenaeum and Methodist Church, has been building links with the town’s Junior and Infant School over the last couple of years through leading assemblies (as do the other local churches) and lending a helping hand. Zoe now helps out regularly at the Junior School in the year 6 classes, building the friendships with those who attend the midweek club at the Athenaeum on a Wednesday. June saw the start of an arts and craft club for year 5 students at the school. “There are many sporting clubs already at the school, and starting this club provides an alternative for those with creative minds, and who enjoy getting their hands dirty,” said Zoe. This club will also provide an opportunity to in-
troduce the children to the Athenaeum for when they are old enough to enjoy its facilities. There are 12 children (and a parent helper) in the craft club and they have already been getting their hands dirty with clay, creating their own masterpieces and painting them. They are also doing some finer work with glass painting. The Athenaeum has been fortunate to receive some funding in order to continue this project in the new academic year for the new year 5 students. “It is an enjoyable session and great to see the children being creative and having a good time whilst doing it. Being able to offer an alternative activity for the children and developing the existing relations with the school is a great way for the Athenaeum to develop its youth work in the village,” said Zoe.

THE Melbourne Dental Practice has moved from Potter Street to new premises in Castle Street and, after a highly praised inspection from Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust, it is now ready to welcome patients. There are three ground floor surgeries in the premises with a separate decontamination room, and all are fully compliant with the latest cross infection policies. The practice is fully wheelchair friendly, which will make some patients' visits to the dentist a far more pleasant experience. Practice manager Pat Smith has confirmed that it is intended to filter some new NHS patients into the practice over the next few months, as clinical capacity allows. Anyone wishing to be put on the NHS waiting list must send their details, in writing only, addressed to Mrs Pat Smith, Practice Manager, at the Castle Street address. On the first day of business at the new practice, two long-standing patients were presented with a bottle of wine and flowers to celebrate the move. Ms Naomi Fry, the practice owner, can be seen giving a bouquet of flowers to Mrs Elizabeth Haynes.

Stage set for trio’s concert THREE young adults, Ben Dodson, Dan Morris and Dan Gardner, have been working hard for several months to stage an open air concert by young musicians. It will take place at the recreation ground, Cockshut Lane, Melbourne on Saturday, July 24. from 1pm to 6pm. They are planning for a minimum of five bands with another two under negotiation. The music styles will include reggae, ska and indie rock. Ben, Dan M and Dan G are year 10 students at Chellaston School who felt that they would like to do something useful for charity. With music being a common denominator for many young people, they decided on a concert. Although Ben Dodson has an interest in music and plays the guitar, he
is not a band member and will not be playing at the concert. His efforts and those of Dan M and G will be directed towards the management of the event. The three friends are members of the Melbourne Explorers and Dan M and G will be attending the week long International Scout Camp at Chatsworth which also starts on July 24. The charity chosen by the three friends is Cancer Research UK and they are hopeful of a good turnout to support their efforts and the charity. Pictured at the recreation ground surveying the site of the upcoming concert are from the right, Ben Dodson, Dan Morris and Dan Gardner.

£5,000 rotary aid for good causes WILLIAM Stanier, chairman of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, City of Derby Branch, attended the Rotary Club of Melbourne partners and guest evening. A cheque for £2,130 was presented from the club, bringing the total donation to the RNLI during the year to £2,805. The RNLI and the Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, were the chosen charities of this year’s President, Simon Leech. In his speech of thanks, Mr Stanier spoke of the teamwork, “a fundamental” of the crews who risked their lives. He likened that teamwork to the hard work and determination that had characterised the Rotary club’s efforts in being able, on that presentation evening, to give in excess of £5,000 to several good causes. A donation of £2,000 was presented to Caroline Rossin, Community Fund-Raiser for Rainbows, which brought the total donations to Rainbows in the last 12 months to £2,925. Caroline spoke of the completion of the new £4m Young Persons
unit, designed to cater for the patients who had survived beyond childhood, up to the age of 18. She spoke movingly of the hospice, so well supported by Rotary and scores of other charitable organisations and individuals, whose donations “blessed and enriched” so many young lives. The United Reformed Church Pilots and Explorers Club was given £250, received by organising sisters Nicky and Jackie Rennocks. Two Melbourne students attending Chellaston School, Jack Fisher and Charlotte Tunni-
Colour at Calke A RAINBOW of colour has been planted at The National Trust's Calke Abbey, so visitors will be in for a fantastic floral treat this summer. The traditional walled flower garden is stocked with purple heliotrope, aalvia farinacea and a variety of victoria and antirrhinum with chusan palms swaying overhead. The high red-brick walls give the shelter they need to flourish whilst roses, clematis and wisteria crawl and sprawl to create a really stunning backdrop. Steve Biggins, Head Gardener at Calke Abbey, said: 'The walled garden dates back to 1773 and is a really historic feature of Calke's landscape. Visitors love the sights and scents of the flowers, so we always plan a good display to really show off this special place." The garden is open from 11am-5pm every day in July and August. A garden ticket is required to see the displays and normal parking charges apply.
cliffe, were each given £250 to help towards the school’s ongoing splendid Uganda 2010 Project, where students, after learning essential skills, will renovate and rebuild property in war-torn Kampala, for use as an Orphanage. Finally a tribute to Edward Hames, just turned 15, who will bravely attempt the Three Peaks challenge in July to raise funds in memory of his father Richard, who died prematurely at the age of 46, from a rare cancer. Richard’s fund has already raised well over £2,500 and to this the Rotary Club added £250.

Walkers ‘over the moon’ with £3,500 charity effort AT midnight on Saturday, May 15, the Melbourne Walkie Talkies (pictured) donned their decorated bras, complete with sequins, tassles, feathers and fairy lights and set off on their first steps in this year’s Playtex Moonwalk. The event, which is 26.2 miles of endurance walking around London, is organised by the Walk the Walk organisation, which raises money for Breast Cancer charities. This year’s race started at Hyde Park where the ‘Pink Palace’ hosted beforethe-race shows and entertainment for the 18,000-plus participants in an atmos-
phere of hysteria and excitement mixed with a good measure of trepidation. All of the Melbourne Walkie Talkies finished the race and have the medals (and blisters) to prove it, raising a fantastic £3,500 for the charity. They are all walking normally again now, although it has been noted that no-one is committing to doing it again next year ... yet! The ladies would like to thank all the people who sponsored and supported them in this challenge and if you would still like to make a donation you can do so at http://www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/melbournewalkietalkies.
Fireman Dave hangs up his helmet ONE of the county's longest serving retained firefighters has called it a day and hung up his helmet for the last time after 40 years' service. Dave Astle of Melbourne was almost 19 when he signed up with Derbyshire Fire Service to become a part-time fireman based at the Melbourne station. When he joined the service in 1970, Harry Brame was sub officer at Melbourne, later followed by John Dollman before Dave took the reins in 1987.

Dave's service has been formally acknowledged on several occasions, including 20 and 30 years' service and he has been awarded good conduct medals and the Queen's Medal. An engineer by trade, David has combined full-time work and his family life with being on call for the fire service 24/7. The occasion of his retirement was marked with a party at the Melbourne Royal British Legion Club Royal Suite organised by his fire service colleagues, who presented him with a special shield. limit to being a retained fireman, Dave felt that the time was right to finish as he completes his 40th year. He said: "I will miss the social side but I probably won't miss having to get up in the middle of the night." Ironically, as Watch Manager, Dave was in charge of call-outs. Dave will not have lots of spare time on his hands as he continues with his employment at Rolls-Royce. With his variety of interests and hobbies keeping him busy he will no doubt be looking forward to a full retirement.

How a caring family is helping in Africa LIKE many people John and Barbara Presley have given money to Africa and Third World countries, but were concerned how effectively it was being spent. The Melbourne couple's solution was to work directly on projects with their ‘sponsored’ child, Joseph Kinjanyui. Joseph was sponsored through school and college by the Presleys and became a deputy head of a large school in the Kinangop region north of Nairobi. Over the years he became a member of the Presley family. "We became his parents in England, he called us mum and dad and he wrote letters to his sisters and brother," said Barbara. "His letters were simple, full of emotion and

full of the real meaning of life." Until 2001 they had not met Joseph, but John recounts their emotional meeting first in a Nairobi hotel. What they found in Kinangop was a region with no running water, no electricity, no telephones, shoeless children living on the edge of poverty, but a huge uplifting community spirit. "We were overcome by emotion and surprised by the joy of life in such difficult surroundings, but what wonderful people," the couple said. Since then the Presleys (pictured left) have founded the South Kinangop Project, which through family, friends and colleagues has raised over £50,000. Piped water has been supplied, schools equipped, electricity introduced and a community centre built for over 110 poor/orphaned children where they are educated and fed. This year's annual plant sale at Station Farm raised £1,800 in May, while special help has come from their two daughters, Joanne and Catherine and their son John. They all live in Melbourne and are teachers locally – Joanne’s school, Ivanhoe College, Ashby, recently raised £2,500 for the project from ‘Ivanhoe's Got Talent’ shows and the college now has special links with schools in Kinangop.

ROBERT ANDERSON 1943-2010 ROBERT was an estate agent and chartered surveyor, first at Frank Innes, then with John German in Burton on Trent, where he was head of residential sales. In the 1990s he formed Alexander Anderson before later working alone. In Melbourne he played an important part in land negotiations for the new houses in Station Road. A complete professional and meticulous by nature, he will be remembered by many not only for work but for his charming personality, sense of humour and many passions. Robert was born near Cardiff on August 17, 1943. At age four, the family moved to Leicestershire. Sister Julia remembers that home was Manor Farm at Cadeby. Surrounded by pigs, ducks and a Ferguson tractor, his interest in country matters was formed. Next came Loughborough, and at 13 Robert went to Trent College at Long Eaton. Fellow pupil Rex Gooding recalls: “Robert was always either getting me into trouble or trying to get me out of it. He was a great sportsman, good at athletics, tennis and cross-country.” Robert’s first job was salesman for a bed spring manufacturer in Castle Donington, but he soon realised that this was not what he wanted, and chose to train as a chartered surveyor in Bournemouth.
Fellow student John Coles was there: “Robert was about three years older than the rest of us and wiser. He had been in bedding! He was the doyenne of our team. He would often challenge the lecturers. We all stayed in some grotty digs but Robert managed to find upmarket accommodation run by a beautiful widow who even served him breakfast in a bikini.” Robert played hockey and went sailing. He bought a caravan where his girlfriend Liz would come and stay. Her father, Daniel Gilmour, was school doctor at Trent College, and in 1968 Liz and Robert were married.
In 1973 Robert, Liz, two young children and soon to be a third set up home in Ashby Road, Melbourne. As well as transforming the old cottage, the mature trees which now grace the fields at this end of Melbourne are the result of Robert’s planting programme over the years. For Robert his home and land became “the Patch”. He would retire here to spend time with his dogs, tinker with the old Ferguson tractor or prepare one of his vintage cars, including a Jaguar XK 140 and a Ferrari Dino. for another visit to the owners’ club. Ski-ing, learnt at school, remained one of his abiding interests. In Gargellen he practised his skills and endured the fizzy beer. April 23, 2008, was the date when George, one of his Labrador pups, was delivered to his new Austrian home. At other times he would sally forth from “the Patch”, taking the bus to the Chequers at Ticknall or one winter ski-ing along the street and right in through the front door of the Melbourne Hotel. Always sure to order a half in a pint glass, his many friends at the White Swan could rely on his presence to enliven their day. Robert died on May 26. It was standing room only at the funeral. His wife Liz died in 2003. He is survived by his sister Julia, children Helen, William and Charlotte, and grandchildren Izzy, Alex and Bertie. – William Moult

THE ninth annual Weston on Trent Scarecrow Trail took place over the weekend of June 19/20 and was a great success. More than 1,200 visitors went to the village to see the assortment of scarecrows on offer – from a 20ft fully operating Thunderbirds puppet hanging in the streets of Weston to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang complete with functioning wings, an Eco monster made entirely from recycled objects by Weston Brownies and even Michael Jackson put in an appearance. Visitors enjoyed cream teas in a village garden in the sunshine and took part in traditional games such as the coconut shy and horseshoe throwing on the village green and not so traditional ones like sponge throwing and cherry spitting! The trail raised in excess of £2,800, which will be shared between the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, and local village groups. The winner for the best scarecrow was “Great Scott”, the huge Thunderbirds puppet which was a show stopper.

Swarkestone Cricket Club (left to right): back row, Tom Poynton, Jamie Guthrie, Luke Thomas, Luke Lacey, Tom Hamilton, Mike Scott; front row, Gary Smith, Jonny Owen, Jim Thornton (Captain), Bruce Dilks and Dave Dixon.
Home, sweet home for Swarkestone SWARKESTONE Cricket Club is now sporting a new pavilion at its home ground ... and it is something special. Work started on the build programme on November 9, 2009, and it was available for the first home fixture of the season on April 23, 2010. To have achieved so much in such a short period of time – especially during probably the worst winter for decades – is truly outstanding. The pavilion is a substantial building that replaced the previous one which was well past its sell-by date. Club committee member Dermot Stuart took on board the process of grant applications with very positive outcomes, securing contributions from eight out of the 12 applications. This success paved the way for his achievements in project-managing the build programme.
Although a formal opening is not planned until the August Bank Holiday weekend, the pavilion is already being well used. Because of the size of the changing rooms, the facilities match the requirements of the ECB guidelines for hosting first class cricket and the club played host to the Derbyshire Ladies vs. Northants Ladies fixture recently. A design feature of the pavilion is the wood clad exterior giving the building a temporary appearance whilst the use of eight, eight inch square spruce pillars at the front contribute to a more substantial look. The boiler system used to provide hot water for showers and for heating is a top of the range, wood fuelled system for the capacity required. As a Public Community building the club is required by law to have an Energy Performance Certificate and following a recent survey it has been granted an A standard, significantly better than other newly built or standard stock prem-
ises. The Building Programme and the Community Sustainable Energy Programme enabled the system to be installed and it has attracted a lot of interest from other clubs and businesses. Swarkestone Cricket Club was formed circa 1898 and was originally located at Ingleby Toft. The first pavilion located at the Swarkestone ground was a railway carriage purchased from the Carriage and Wagon works in Derby at a cost of £1 per linear foot. This was followed some years later when a converted Army Billet was purchased from Markeaton Park for £92. The club presently fields 13 teams ranging from the Under 11s through to the senior teams. In addition to being the home pavilion for team players, the club house is now in use by community groups for private and community functions.
On their bikes for women’s national series THE Leisure Centre car park in Melbourne was a hive of activity on Sunday morning, June 6, when 50 cyclists gathered with their support teams for the third of this season’s National Women's Team Series Races. It was thought that the early morning rain might have caused a problem but it had cleared by the time the race got underway at 9.30am. This was the second time the 50mile road race has been held over the hilly Melbourne course, organised by Russell Gavagan and the Velo Club of Long Eaton, following on from the success of last year’s event. Claire Galloway, of Team Zappi, won the race which was sponsored by Geoff Carter Architects. Claire judged the finishing hill to perfection to finish a bike length ahead of Anna Fischer, of Max Gear RT with Kara Chesworth riding for Twickenham CC third.

Ben has his sights on on sailing to glory
FOURTEEN-year-old sailor Ben Brown has had a busy year competing as part of British teams at Euromed Regatta in Malta, Braassamermeer Regatta in Holland and this month at Nieuwpoort Regatta in Flanders, Belgium. Ben, from Melbourne, learned to sail at Staunton Harold Sailing Club four years ago, and took to it “like a duck to water”. He has been working his way up through the junior rankings ever since sailing an Optimist – small dinghies raced by under-16s. Despite living so far from the sea, he has risen through the ranks of the Midland Optimist Team to the National Development squad and National Intermediate squad,

training with the top British coaches and competing regularly at national events and representing Great Britain overseas. Ben ended his Optimist career in May to concentrate on sailing his International 420 – a two-man spinnaker boat for under 18s. He has been sailing with his helm, Robert Baddeley, since last autumn and Nieuwpoort will be their first international event together. The boys are aiming to earn a place in the 420 national squad this winter following the 420 nationals and selectors events. Local sports charity, The Matthew Sanders Sports Foundation, recently recognised Ben’s achievements and awarded him sponsorship towards new sails for his boat. Ben says: “I had spoken to Mick Sanders

about my sailing and I was really pleased when they agreed to sponsor me; the charity supports young people trying to reach the top in their sport and I’m glad they chose me.” Ben says he still sails at Staunton Harold whenever he can as well as competing around the country. Staunton Harold has a very strong 420 fleet to train with and Ben is hoping that over the next few years he will be selected for the Great Britain squad for the European or World Championships. He has also recently trained as an assistant instructor at the club and is helping out with teaching others to sail. The club welcomes new sailors whether adults or children so why not give it a try?

Quarter-final place the June highlight MELBOURNE Town Cricket Club had yet another indifferent month in June with both teams putting in two good and two bad performances. To counter this, the seconds did progress to the quarter-finals of the cup. Beginning the month at home to Winshill, Melbourne first team restricted the visitors to 209-8 but in reply Melbourne struggled to 138-5 with Mark Rossi (53) and Mick Meakin (48), securing a losing draw. A week later away to Stanton Elks, spells of 3-14 by Andy Potts and 3-48 from Ben Newton saw the home side shot out for 150. With skipper Alex Slater hitting 62 not out and aided by 50 from Meakin, Melbourne raced home by seven wickets with 13 overs to spare. Town then entertained Rolleston Seconds and, with 4-30 by Sal Jassani, the away side posted 176-8. Melbourne were cruising at 110-2 but a batting collapse ensued and Town fell 22 runs short on 154 all out. The month ended away to Rosehill
Methodists and Melbourne hit their highest total of the season, 332-3 with in-form opener Meakin hitting 127, supported by Mark Rossi, 88, and Alex Slater, 46. Rosehill replied with 311-5 with three wickets from Colin Wakefield. The second XI (pictured above) started the month with a heavy defeat away to Winshill Seconds, the home side amassing 2218 with Colin Wakefield taking a superb 5-33 aided by two wickets from 13 year old Faren Price. But Town’s reply fell to 107 all out with Joe Lacey top scoring with 47. A remarkable game followed at home to Stanton Elks Seconds when Melbourne were shot out for just 126 with Wakefield hitting 36 helped by 28 from Dave Potts and 27 by Chris Lancaster. Stanton were soon in trouble and fell to 63 all out with Potts completing a superb game in taking 4-9 and Ian Fiddler who took 3-19. Away to Brailsford Thirds the home side smashed 274-4 with two wickets apiece for Matt Heafield and Ian Fiddler. Melbourne
were in trouble at 83-6 but an unbroken stand of 56 in 18 overs by Alan Buxton (25) and Vinny Hallfield (23) secured an unlikely draw. Andy Stanley had earlier hit 39 in taking the total to 141-7. A superb run chase was on offer the following week as visitors Derby Congs Thirds hit 232- 9 with Dave Potts taking 4-64 with two wickets for Steve Price. A quite brilliant innings of 127 not out by Kenny Grant saw Melbourne home as Potts smashed the last ball of the innings to the boundary to secure the win. The following day Town fell to a heavy defeat to Rosehill Methodists but the most important result of their month was away to Mickleover Thirds, who scored 211-2. But it was that man Ken Grant who scored 102 and skipper James Smith with 35 to give the team a cup quarter-final place against lowly Kirk Langley seconds. The club would like to thank this month's ball sponsors: President Richard Heath, the Heafield family, Melbourne Garage and Austin Property Management.
