ALABAMA FALL CAMP PREVIEW

FINANCIAL GIANT

RECEIVERS

The wide receiving corps is arguably the deepest unit for UA. The fourth installment of an eight-part series counting down the beginning of fall camp looks at Alabama wide receivers and tight ends. The team’s top three receivers — Amari Cooper, Kevin Norwood and Christion Jones — are back, but tight ends Michael Williams and Kelly Williams are gone. Receivers Marvin Shinn and Danny Woodson Jr. transferred.

s two days of budget data — and a waterfall in the football building’s spa pool — would indicate, the University of Alabama athletic department is a financial giant among its intercollegiate peers. The question now is, just who are those peers going to be? Over the past two weeks, starting with Mike Slive at Southeastern Conference Media Days and progressing through the other powerconference commissione r s , t he bat t le lines are b e i n g drawn. T here is CECIL similarity HURT i n t heir speeches about re organization of the NCAA, including the creation of another “tier” made up of at least the 80 or so wealthiest programs and probably some of the other conferences, such as the Mountain West, which is close. But the point was clear. Whether it was the SEC’s Slive or Larry Scott of the Pac-12, the message was the same: Things have to change. The tool to make those changes happen will be money. For instance, most of the major-conference schools (not all) want a stipend for athletes. That costs money. The big schools want a year-round training table for athletes. That costs money. They want to pay for recruits’ parents to be compensated for making SEE HURT | 3C

TU TUSCALOOSA | You get what you pay for. Former University of Alabama athletic dirrector Mal Moore believed in that theory. T That’s why he sat on a runway in South Florid ida in January 2007 with an open checkbook, w willing to spend what it took to lure Nick Saban to Tuscaloosa. He got w what he paid for. An exa examination of fi nancial documents obtained Tu by The Tuscaloosa News — starting in 2006, the year Sab before Saban’s arrival, and running through 2011, the

Overview: The wide receivers could have a big season with abundant talent at the position. Cooper is a mismatch for most defensive backs with a season of experience under his belt. His blend of speed, quickness and precise route-running makes him a difficult matchup. He also possesses great body control. Black is a threat every time he touches the ball, and Norwood proved his worth during the crucial two-minute drive against LSU last season. Throw in Jones, White, Falkins and Bell, and McCarron has his choice of targets. Replacing Michael Williams won’t be easy. Williams was essentially another tackle on the line. Howard brings an athleticism to the position Alabama hasn’t had. If he learns the offense and becomes adept at blocking, watch out.

most recent year available — revealed Moore’s theory became reality. For the 2006 football season, the University of Alabama football program wrote checks to the sum of $5,763,617 for then-head coach Mike Shula and his nine full-time assistant coaches. A year later, with Nick Saban at the helm, that total rose nearly 19 percent to $6.84 million. By 2011, Saban and his staff nearly doubled the 2006 numbers, earning the whopping sum of $10,678,891 (Saban $5,775,394, assistant coaches $4,903,497). But salaries aren’t the only thing that has grown during the Saban Era. SEE GIANT | 3C

Tight ends: Brian Vogler is the most experienced tight end, having played in 23 career games. The 6 -foot-7, 260-pounder has three career catches. Sophomore Malcolm Faciane will compete for playing time. The 6-foot-5, 267-pounder is an athletic tight end who’s played in eight career games. Harrison Jones has played in 18 games with one career catch. UA signed five-star tight end O.J. Howard, and the 6-foot-6, 237-pounder is expected to compete for playing time. Redshirt freshman Kurt Freitag is 6-foot-4, 235 pounds and looking for a role.

Wide receivers: Cooper led the team in receiving on his way to freshman All-America honors. The 6-foot-1, 202-pounder broke the school record with 11 receiving touchdowns. He finished with 59 receptions for 1,000 yards. Norwood hauled in 29 catches for 461 yards and four touchdowns. Jones made 27 receptions for 368 yards and four touchdowns. DeAndrew White returns from an injured knee. Kenny Bell played in 12 games, grabbing 17 passes for 431 yards and three touchdowns before his season ended with a broken leg against Auburn. Chris Black missed last season with a shoulder injury, but he is healthy and expected to contribute. Freshman Raheem Falkins has received rave reviews from his teammates and gives quarterback AJ McCarron a big target at 6-foot-4, 203 pounds. Robert Foster is expected to join the team if and when he is cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

For Alabama to have one of the top football programs in the country, it takes hard work and lots of money
