ceed expenses, fund the other sports — but the model isn’t quite as simple as that. “About half your revenue comes from the business of sports and event management, which I guess is the business side of our business,” Battle said. “Most of the other half comes from contributions and donations and Tide Pride and so forth, which is different from any business I’ve ever been in. That has been interesting.”

COMING SUNDAY Wide receivers and tight ends

TUSCALOOSA | Bill Battle is only a few months into his tenure as the University of Alabama’s athletics director, but he quickly discovered that running an athletic department isn’t exactly running a business. Battle studied UA’s athletic budget and realized collegiate athletics has an unbalanced ledger. “This is an interesting business if you can call it a business, which I guess it is,” said Battle, 71, who was hired in March to replace the late Mal Moore, who was at the time hospitalized with a pulmonary condition. “It’s like running a company that has 21 divisions and two of them are profitable.” The windfall from football and men’s basketball, the only sports with incomes that ex-

Overview: It should be a seamless transition for Yeldon to assume Lacy’s role. Behind him gets intriguing. Although coming off an injury, Fowler is a better blocker than any of the others. Drake is electric as a ballcarrier with topend speed, but he struggled with ball security at times. Then there are the freshmen. This is a position group to watch during fall camp.

The newcomers: Alabama signed four running backs in its 2013 class: Derrick Henry (6-foot3, 238 pounds), Tyren Jones, (5foot-9, 215), Alvin Kamara (5-foot10, 195) and Altee Tenpenny (6-foot, 207). All four were rated four stars by rivals.com. Henry enrolled for the spring semester but missed some of spring practice with an injury. He is expected to be available for the start of fall camp.

The experienced: How good was T.J. Yeldon in his first season? The 6-foot-2, 218-pounder from Daphne had the best rushing season by a freshman in school history with 1,108 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging 6.3 yards a carry. He rushed for 153 yards on 25 carries, both career bests, against Georgia in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. Junior Jalston Fowler was off to a promising start to 2012 before injuring his left knee in game two. Fowler, 6-foot-1, 250 pounds, rushed for 85 yards (7.7 yards a carry) in the season-opener against Michigan. Sophomore Kenyan Drake played in 12 games in his first season, rushing for five touchdowns on 42 carries for 281 yards. After redshirting in 2011 due to sustaining a knee injury before the season, Dee Hart played in fi ve games before another seasonending knee injury.
