Design Practice 3

The Domino Project was an exploration of Le Corbusier’s Domino House. The Domino created the opportunity to have an open floor plan that was independent of the exterior of the building. In this project we were given three partitions to use in the design of the space and a single stair. The concept that drove this project was the relationship between the interior and exterior walls. Where there is a partition, the exterior wall is a single piece of foam core. And where there is a stair, the exterior wall is double the thickness of the rest. It is open on the exterior where ever there is no objects lining up with it on the interior.

This project was a vertical building project. The project’s location is in Berlin, Germany on the Jewish Judengang. And the museum exhibits the works of architect John Hejduk. The squares that form the spaces in the museum relate to the early works of Hejduk in which he had exercises exploring cubes, grids, and frames. The circulation of the museum acts like the Judengang in that it is a single path that goes through every room in the museum, making it a progression of John Hejduk’s work and views of the Judengang.

Design Practice 4

This project began with the study of a precedent, James Stirling’s Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart, Germany. The component that was taken from Stirling’s building was the circular courtyard in the center of the building that doubled as the main circulation space. There were two seedhouses that were located on the site, and the goal of this project was to re-purpose the existing buildings into a visual arts building for the SDSU Visual Arts Department. The requirements of the project stated that the building have an art yard to perform outdoor art projects, studio space for the students, gallery space for presentations, offices for administration, and classrooms. The design of the Visual Arts Building focused on static space and dynamic space. The classrooms and offices made up the static spaces and the art yard, studios, and gallery made up the dynamic spaces where the walls move and rotate to create multi-functional spaces for the department.

This was a project for a new milking parlor, the project began with visitation of a milking parlor and the studying of milking parlors. This construction type was stacking of a designed stacking unit. Research on stacking units such as brick, CMUs, and stone was done in order to do this. Above is the stacking unit used in this project, and its advantages come in the interlocking connection of the units. The units can be stacked in a way to allow for viewing through them, whether viewing the milking process or viewing the campus from the inside.

This project focused on the use of a common stacking unit to create a research library for the Mississippi River. The precedent for this project is the Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito. The components that were brought into the Mississippi River Library were the circulation tubes that transport people, light, air, and utilities, and the use of different facades on every side of the building.

Precast Concrete Office Building Project done with Rex Lyon

Precast Concrete Building Shop

This project focused on the building material of precast concrete. The column, beam, floor slab, and spandrel were all parts studied in this class, along with the connects between them all. The spandrel was the only piece designed in this class. The model above shows the spandrel design that worked as a wave around the column grid. For the model, the spandrels and columns were constructed with a 3D printer, the beams were made of chipboard, and the floor slabs were made out of acrylic.

Nova Scotia Power's New Headquarters -Architects: WZMH Architects -Location: Halifax, Canada -Year: 2011 The revealing of the structure in the atrium is the aspect of this project that I took.

Centre Georges Pompidou -Architect: Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers -Location: Paris, France -Year: 1976 I used the Pompidou centre as a precedent because of the way the structure and mechanicals are revealed. I used this approach in the Nick Veasey Gallery to show the “insides” of the building.

The G.V.W. is a museum for the works of three artists: Alberto Giacometti, Nick Veasey, and Andrew Wyeth. These artists all have different methods of revealing humans and their surroundings. To reveal is to lay open to view; display; exhibit. Giacometti is a sculptor, Veasey is a x-ray artist, and Wyeth is a painter. Giacometti reveals the human figure as the shadow they cast, Veasey reveals the insides of objects, and Wyeth reveals the landscapes and people of his life. There are three galleries in the museum, one for each artist. Each of the galleries are designed to reveal what the artists reveal in their artwork. The Giacometti Gallery has Litracon walls and translucent glass to reveal the shadow cast from the sculptures and people visiting the museum. The Veasey Gallery reveals exposed structure around the art with lighting that works like a light box. And the Wyeth Gallery reveals the surrounding landscape of Rapid City and people viewing the artwork and this is done from the exterior with a mirrored glass.

March 15, 2014 Brian T. Rex Associate Professor & Department Head SDSU DoARCH Dear DoARCH, I am writing to inform you of my interest in the Master’s of Architecture at South Dakota State University. I am currently obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Architectural Studies from South Dakota State University, and currently hold a GPA of 3.796. While attending SDSU, I have put my education first and have had the honor of being on the Dean’s List every semester. I chose architecture at SDSU because I always wanted to become an architect and being in the first class in a new program offered me something that not too many people get. Graduate school has always been my plan when I came to SDSU for architecture, and the professors that I have had and will continue to work with have made me stick to my plan of wanting to further my education at SDSU. The work of the department with the small towns of South Dakota has always been something that I would like to get involved with and one of my goals for graduate school is to aid in the process and help further the research that the department has initiated. Being from a small town in South Dakota, I have always wanted to increase the impact of architecture and design in these towns. And the impact of this department on the towns of South Dakota would be a great opportunity for me to join in on. Given my education and experience, I am confident that I am an excellent fit for the SDSU DoARCH program. I would be honored with the chance of continuing to be in the first class to take new steps for this growing and excelling program. Respectfully, Anthony Dyk
