Conferences

Edinburgh Conference 2015 With the disabled community having over £80 billion pounds to spend annually there is a very strong case for this area to be tapped into. “I hope you all have an enjoyable and interesting Conference” “I would like to welcome all delegates and speakers to ‘The Hub’ in Edinburgh. Over the last few years my company ‘Access and Evac-U-8’ have organised major CPD Conferences on varied subjects ranging from the ‘Legacy of the Olympic Games’ and the ‘Future of Accessible Sport in Great Britain’, to ‘Emergency Evacuation’ and from ‘The Accessible Britain Challenge’ to last year’s event at the Emirates Stadium in London where the subject was ‘Emergency Evacuation and Competency’ To-days CPD subject is ‘The Power of the Disability Pound and the Benefits to Businesses and Society’. The spending power of the ‘Purple Pound’ has been talked about for some time now, so I thought it would be opportune to have a Conference about this interesting subject, and the benefits that businesses can gain by making their property and services accessible to disabled people.

Euan MacDonald MBE Euan’s Guide The Disabled Access review web site www.euansguide.com In 2003, Euan MacDonald MBE noticed a loss of power in his thumb when trying to change gear on his bike. It seemed innocuous at the time but two months later he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. The idea of Euan’s Guide came to Euan and his sister Kiki. Despite using a wheelchair, I still wanted to go out to new places but only find out if access is suitable through a process of trial and error. Throughout the years, my family has built up a local directory on disabled access. We thought that there must be thousands of people who have the same issues so we set up the web site to share our experiences and learn from others. Euan’s Guide aims to be a friendly, honest & empowering alternative to hours of web searching and phone calls and, most importantly, remove the fear of the unknown when visiting a venue for the first time Euan’s Guide is endorsed by Professor Stephen Hawking and JK Rowling

(THE MOBILITY AND SUPPORT INFORMATION SERVICE) PROMOTING SOCIAL INCLUSION AND EQUALITY.

As Founder of MASIS,( refer to the website www.masis.org.uk) I am delighted to have been invited by Accessandevacu8 to write this editorial for inclusion in the first edition of the magazine. Approximately 20% of the United Kingdom’s population are affected by disabilities and this is before taking into account the many millions more individuals who undertake the valuable roles of carers. I therefore believe that it is reasonably accurate to state that about 32% of the population are directly or indirectly affected by disability. During the many years of voluntary work I have undertaken (I am also National Vice-President of the Disabled Motorists Federation), I have all too often been made aware of the fact that the needs of disabled people, their carers and families are overlooked. They are still often excluded from society and especially where issues relating to education, employment, recreation and other requirements are concerned are prevented from as leading as normal as possible lifestyle to those experienced by non-disabled individuals.

REMOVING THE BARRIERS. By Peter Lyne Since 2004, I have participated in many forums relating to healthcare and disability (some of which have been hosted by H.M. Government departments and held within the Palace of Westminster). During the forums which have focussed on improvements to healthcare services and included senior medical and academic professionals, I have been informed that addressing issues relating to improving social inclusion, equality and diversity (which involves making communities, places of employment, public buildings and service providing establishments more accessible) is as equally important as the medical and surgical intervention which may be required by disabled people ‘INJECTING’ POSITIVE ATTITUDES IMPROVES WELLBEING. MASIS is a Registered Charity and as such wishes to develop beneficial relationships with companies operating within the housing, motor trade, transport, tourism, recreation and healthcare sectors. I am convinced from the positive responses it has already received that it will substantially help to improve the lifestyles of disabled people and remove the barriers which they encounter in their daily existence.

Edinburgh’s business tourism sector has received a substantial boost with the news of a successful bid win that will bring a far reaching legacy for the city. Scotland’s Capital has been selected as the host city for the prestigious Rehabilitation International 23rd World Congress (R.I. World Congress) in October 2016. Bringing over 1,000 delegates to Edinburgh and with an estimated economic impact of over £2million, the four-day event will play a crucial role in cementing Edinburgh’s reputation as an accessible destination that welcomes disabled and disadvantaged visitors. Led by Convention Edinburgh and host venue, the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), the winning bid not only showcased the city’s strong business tourism offering, but ensured the Edinburgh’s accessible credentials were at its core. From Edinburgh’s transport providers and its compact size, to the considered approach to accessibility by the EICC and city businesses, Rehabilitation International leaders agreed Edinburgh was the best fit for its conference and delegates’ needs. Tanya Gilchrist, Head of Operations for The Shaw Trust and organisers of the R.I. World Congress 2016, said: “The R.I. World Congress is our flagship event. Our delegates are high profile R.I. members, leading researchers, advocates, government agencies and practitioners.

Accessible Tourism demands a combination of world class event management, travel, logistics, hotels and venue. “Edinburgh’s bid team not only met our strict criteria, they exceeded it, offering a culturally rich and engaging experience that would reached beyond the venue to a stunning city location that all our delegates can explore and enjoy. VisitScotland currently estimate ‘Accessible Tourism’ market spend in Scotland to be worth £1.5billion, generating 29million day trips per year. It is a crucial market for both leisure and business tourism, yet often overlooked by businesses. Preparation for the R.I. World Congress 2016 is also providing the perfect opportunity for tourism leaders to work with Edinburgh businesses to enable greater understanding of the small changes and considerations, often easily implemented, that can have a dramatic impact on the accessibility of a venue or attraction Chris McCoy, Head of the Accessible Tourism Programme, at Visitscotland said: “VisitScotland is delighted to be involved in the preparations to welcome the R.I. World Congress to Edinburgh. This is a great opportunity for Edinburgh to showcase how accessible the city can become, and VisitScotland is committed to supporting and helping businesses in the city to prepare for the conference in 2016. This will become a vital part of VisitScotland’s overall accessible tourism programme of work for the next two to three years.
