For more than five decades, the people of Antigua and Barbuda have looked forward to the gathering of the racing yachts in the waters of Antigua, at the end of April. The 52nd Annual Sailing Week 2019, commencing April 27 to May 3, 2019, promises to be even more exciting than those which came before. On behalf of the Government and People of Antigua and Barbuda, I welcome each and every visitor to our shores and to the festivities connected to the week-long sailing events. The races have become more challenging, and the competition has been more intense. The crew on each vessel has undergone training that prepared them for grueling races and for victory. Good luck to all!

PETERS & MAY ROUND ANTIGUA RACE

THE ULTIMATE WARM UP TO 5 DAYS OF ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK HAPPENS DURING THE PETERS & MAY ROUND ANTIGUA RACE. THIS 53 MILE RACE around the stunning coast of the island is one of 3 annual opportunities to circumnavigate Antigua in a challenge. With a new double-handed class for the race, there will be an exciting opportunity to set the first record for the circumnavigation. It’s a unique race where classic boats and ultra modern vessels compete in near-perfect Caribbean conditions in search of victory. On Saturday April 27, participants are encouraged to take on the challenge to beat the 2018 monohull elapsed time record set by Warrior, sailed by Stephen Murray

Jr. in the American modified Volvo 70 finishing in 3 hrs 55 mins and 38 seconds. In 2015 the multihull record was set by Lloyd Thornburg in his trimaran Phaedo 3, which still remains at 3 hours, 26 minutes and 9 seconds. The prize-giving at the end of the Peters & May Round Antigua Race signals the official opening of Antigua Sailing Week. The combined award presentation and welcome party in Nelson’s Dockyard are not to be missed.

RACE | 19

ASW AT A GLANCE ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK consists of five days of racing during which crews are challenged with a variety of old and new courses including round the cans, windward/leeward and for some, coastal racing, all set in the pictureperfect setting of the deep blue Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea off Antigua’s south coast with ever-present trade winds. Antigua Sailing Week offers racing for sailors of all skill levels and everyone is invited to participate. The fleet consists of everything from a selection of the world’s top racing boats to sports boats, race charter boats, family cruisers, bareboats and multihulls, all ranging in size from about 20 feet to over 100 feet in length. Crews as large as 25 and as few as 2 all have the chance to test their skill in these 5 days of racing. Race starts are divided between two committee boats that rotate start locations daily. On each day of racing, one fleet will start at the Rendezvous start line and race towards the west, while the other fleet will start at the Windward start line and race towards the east. The close proximity of the race courses provides spectators with quite a sight as they watch the huge variety of spinnakers scuttle down wind.

10 YEARS OF REGGAE IN THE PARK

ANYONE ASKED to describe the Caribbean in a few words will rarely do so without mentioning beaches, sailing, cricket, carnival, rum and of course reggae. Reggae, the music which is world renowned for its message of peace, togetherness, and social justice, has always been a favourite of local bands and DJ’s, but back in 2010 it was the brainchild of the then event manager, who came up with the great idea of an international reggae concert becoming a new event on the Antigua Sailing Week schedule. 52

The first Reggae concert took place at Shirley Heights Lookout in 2010. and the headline band was world famous Third World with renowned lead singer Bunny Rugs. For those who remember that night, a Thursday night, the sight of 2500 people packed on the side of the hill overlooking Nelson’s Dockyard and the classic postcard view of Antigua, were blown away by a fantastic event. It was such an amazing night that the following evening, the Final Awards Party was almost an anti-climax. It was for that reason that the decision was made to move the event to the

This international event it’s also an incredible opportunity for our local stars to expose their music and culture to the world. Some of the favourite Antiguan bands over the years have included Burning Flames, Hardcore, Asher Otto and Itchy Feet, Claudette Peters, Tian Winter, Spirited, 1761,Tizzy, Laviscount Brass, Rico and the 4 Play Band, the Sound Citizens, Zambai & friends, The Strays, plus numerous calypsonians and steel panists.

eve of Lay Day, on Tuesday, as sailors could then enjoy the night without worrying about getting to the start line the following morning. Artists that followed over the years included headliners Maxi Priest, Kymani Marley, Steel Pulse, Damian Marley, DJ Private Ryan, Shaggy, Luciano & Tarrus Riley. The venue did finally move down the hill to Nelson’s Dockyard. The mixture of iconic venue of a UNESCO World Heritage site, a huge stage and the dockside location at the marina and the space to have an international crowd of

up to 4000 people has ultimately become a favourite for many. On April 30th, the 10th anniversary of the event we hope to have curated an impressive line-up to celebrate this milestone. We look forward to hosting you for what will be an unforgettable night. Advance general tickets are $95ec and the Inet Lookout Experience are $175ec. KPMG Y2K RACE DAY PRIZE GIVING

ANTIGUA YACHT CLUB | THURSDAY MAY 2 - 3:00PM - 7:00PM THE FIRST YOUTH SAILING PROGRAMME in Antigua was created by Antigua Yacht Club in the nineties and produced many of Antigua’s hottest sailors. Now ten years old the National Sailing Academy was then formed to enable every Antiguan primary and secondary school to offer sailing as part of the national curriculum. Both programmes have produced an increasing number of youths with dinghy sailing experience but for many that is where their sail racing experience ends. The Y2K program seeks to bridge the gap between dinghy sailing and keelboats. In 2018 we had 13 youths individally onboard along with two full youth crews making a total of 25 youths racing in ASW. In 2019 we hope to increase the number on board. This second year of the

Y2K program pairs youth with sailing aptitude, aged 13 – 25 with professional crews entered in Antigua Sailing Week. The youths race throughout the entire regatta, but this days prize giving acknowledge and celebrates their participation. Afternoon prizes will be awarded promptly at 5:30 pm so be sure to arrive early to enjoy the atmosphere and a cold beer. A KPMG Y2K booth will be open after racing each day at Antigua Yacht Club and be a de-brief and gathering spot for youths and crews involved in the programme. Be sure to stop by and meet sotme of our future stars. For more information on the Youth to Keelboat programme or if you would like to take a youth on board, please visit www.sailingweek.com/y2k/ CELEBRATE | 57

YOUTH TO KEELBOAT — ABOUT THE PROGRAMME THE ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA Sailing Association (ABSA) in conjunction with Antigua Sailing Week (ASW) launched a new programme allowing youths to gain keel boat experience during Antigua Sailing Week 2018 and 2019 will see year two of this important initiative. In 50 years of ASW there have always been a small number of

62

Antiguan youths on board; often from seafaring families or raised within yachting communities. Skip forward to 2018 and interest in sailing, not just as sport or leisure option, but as a career has grown exponentially. The first youth programme was developed by Antigua Yacht Club in the nineties and then latterly the National Sailing Academy. The Academy

has now enabled a majority of secondary schools island wide to offer sailing as part of the national curriculum. Both programmes have produced an increasing number of youths with dinghy sailing experience but for many that is where their sail racing ends. The Youth to Keel Boat Programme (Y2K) seeks to bridge the gap and help them make the leap to gaining keelboat experience. The original idea for the initiative was borne out of a conversation at a Caribbean Sailing Association (CSA) Conference held in Antigua

between Tim Cross (World Sailing Regional Development Coordinator) and ex-America’s Cup sailor Peter Holmberg. Of the programme Tim Cross said, ‘We were debating how to get more youths into sailing across the region and identified that there needs to be tangible reasons for a young person not only to start sailing, but then remain a life long sailor either recreationally or professionally. This concept is fantastic as it provides both inspiration and aspirations for the young people involved.’

HARPER’S SCHOOL ART COMPETITION THE 2019 Harper’s Office Depot ASW School Art Competition will focus on how students can eliminate single-use plastics that continue to litter our shore and sea. The aim is to eliminate floating marine debris which threatens the lives of our precious marine life. What does marine debris mean? Any man-made materials that enter waterways directly through littering or indirectly via run-off, streams and storm drains. What does marine debris include? Discarded water bottles, cigarette butts, styrofoam containers, wood, paper or plastic bags that end up in the ocean potentially harming marine life. In Antigua & Barbuda this tends to be single-use plastic items left at the beach, along with litter dropped by the road side or improperly disposed of. Items like these make their way to the ocean as they are washed down gutters and 64

sewers during rainfall, or carelessly discarded from pleasure boats. Our goal is to inspire young people to use their creativity to initiate a change in the habits of the community. Their creative projects are to inform the public of methods that will lead to the reduction/elimination of single use plastic and the pollution it creates.

GREEN INITIATIVES | 65

OUR GREEN INITIATIVES ANTIGUA SAILING WEEK has operated the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regattas programme for the past eight years. 2018 saw the introduction of a reusable event cup. These recycled and reusable cups are aimed at reducing the amount of landfill waste produced by our attendees. For 2019, in addition to the official venues – Antigua Yacht Club and Nelson’s Dockyard, you will also be able to find these

66

cups at participating bars including Cloggys, Life on the Corner, Galley Bar and Flatties Flame Grill. Please help us by requesting a reusable cup and using them as much as possible through your days and evenings. Then the cup is yours to keep as we are sure they make great souvenirs of your time here with us! We will also be providing a water station to allow you to refill your water containers, before and after racing.

ENVIRONMENTAL CHECK LIST You can also assist by committing to these seven initiatives. 1. SINGLE USE WATER BOTTLE REDUCTION: Purchase bulk water and use reusable containers when possible.

3. NO DISCHARGE: In the marina, please follow national and international standards.

2. TRASH FREE REGATTA: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Help us as we strive for a trash free regatta:

4. USE NONTOXIC CLEANING PRODUCTS: Use nontoxic products such as white vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide. Traditional products like bleach are very detrimental to the marine environment, with no added benefit!

• Boat waste: Each marina will organize collection of refuse twice daily. Please ensure you separate your waste – BLACK bags for landfill, CLEAR bags for recycling.

5. BOTTOM CLEANING: Please try to come with a clean bottom. Limit your bottom cleaning in the marina whenever possible and use toxic free cleaners.

• Recycle: At the boat, we will hand you detailed instructions indicating the items that can be included.

6. STRAWS ON REQUEST: We are requesting restaurants to stop serving plastic straws. Customers you can help by asking your server or bartender not to give you one, or if given a straw that is not paper, please give it back.

• Oil disposal: Appropriate oil disposal available at Falmouth Harbour Marina and in Nelson’s Dockyard. • Batteries: We can dispose of your lead acid batteries. We are not able to dispose of electronic batteries. Please switch to rechargeable batteries when you can.

7. PLASTIC BAGS: Where possible use your own reusable shopping bags rather than plastics. Most stores in Antigua are now offering paper or re-usable options. Please make use of them.

• Pedestrian waste: Please appropriately use the waste stations provided in and around the event! GREEN INITIATIVES | 67

THE JAN SANTOS TROPHY The Jan Santos Trophy was created by Antigua Sailing Week in 2001 in honour of Jan Santos for her dedicated service to Antigua Sailing Week over many years. It has been awarded annually to honour individuals who have shown true dedication to the event over an extended period of time. In 2019, the award is being given to Sean MacMillan who was a key part of our team for nearly 20 years. He lay the start and finish marks and then kept a watch as safety boat, or for issues with the marks. Sean was a huge, positive supporter of the event and was one of the individuals selected as an ASW Ambassador for the 50th Antigua Sailing Week. He had a great can do attitude

and an even greater sense of humour which meant he and his team mates also managed to have a lot of fun. His pride and joy, Lesgo, was also the boat he entered and won many Antigua and Barbuda Sport Fishing Tournaments on. Sadly, Sean passed away at the end of 2018 and so this award is being given posthumously and will be collected by a representative of his family at the 2019 Final Awards Ceremony. We thank Sean for his genuine commitment and support to Antigua Sailing Week and know that he will be presiding in spirit over Antigua Sailing Week and the English Harbour Rum Party wearing his yellow cap. 75
