Dear Friends of the Faith and our Lord Jesus Christ, It is with great excitement that I pen this communique to you as I survey the horizon for 2019 and conclude that “God is faithful”. His provisions are steadfast, His grace is truly amazing, His love is overflowing, His peace is perfect, and His mercies are made new each and every morning. To God be the Glory for all that He has done. The year 2018 is now in the rear-view mirror of our human experience as we press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus and enter into this God-ordained year of Excellence and Beyond for 2019.

I am delighted that you have decided to participate in this extended time of fasting, prayer, and consecration. This is the perfect time to reset our spiritual compass and bring revival to every area of our faith, families and futures by “seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” through fasting.

This 21-day Daniel Fast plan was designed to be used as a tool to guide you through your journey of reaching for more of Christ. Whether you have devoted yourself to seasons of fasting or if this is your first time, you can begin where you are and experience what God has in store for you in a powerful way through these practical steps. As you meditate and ruminate on the word of God, please ask Holy Spirit to guide you through the application of His Word for your life to produce an eternal transformation.

Together we will seek the Lord for devotion, direction, and provision. It is my prayer that you will experience the presence and power of God in an extraordinary way as you commit yourself to Him over the next 21 days. I look forward to growing together in Christ with you in the year ahead! Servant of the Most High God,

Dr. John R. Adolph, Pastor

FASTING FOCUS 1. FAST Fasting is a principle that God intended for everyone to enjoy. It’s not a punishment; it’s a privilege! By practicing the spiritual discipline of fasting, you can get closer to God and grow in your spiritual walk like never before. It is one of the most powerful weapons God has given us for our daily lives. Commit to the Daniel Fast or to another type of fast for 21 days. Choose something that will stretch you and allow you to grow for 21 days. The Word of God declares in James 4:8a, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

2. READ Read our “21 Day Daniel Fast” Reading Plan throughout the day. Meditate on what you have read. Read the Word over and over as the Holy Spirit leads you to meditate on His Word. Try to do as David did in Psalms 1:2 “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates both day and night.”

3. PRAY The purpose of the fast is to draw nearer to God in devotion and consecration that the power of God will manifest in your life. Prayer is the key! It is through prayer that you will have the opportunity to dialogue with God, to present your requests and your supplications. But more importantly, prayer is the time that you will have the opportunity to HEAR what God is speaking to you. As you pray, LISTEN for the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Prayer services will also be held each Sunday evening (the 6th, 13th, 20th, & 27th) and every Thursday (the 10th, 17th, & 24th) at 6 PM in the sanctuary for the duration of the fast. The WAR ROOM 10,000 will also take place every Wednesday at 7 AM (CST) via FaceBook Live and Conference Call at 641-715-0602. We invite everyone to join us on this spiritual journey as we dig deeper to grow closer to our Soon and Coming King.

Fasting Guide What does the Bible teach about fasting? Biblical fasting involves abstaining from eating (and/or drinking) for spiritual purposes. In the Old Testament, Israel celebrated certain annual feasts, the most prominent being the Day of Atonement. There were also occasional fasts associated with specific historical events, both individuals and corporate. A few examples of fasting are: during a time of grief (1 Sam 31:13; Nehemiah 1:4), during a time of repentance (1 Sam7:6; I Kings 21:27), as an expression of humility (Ezra 8:21; Psalm 69:10), and as an expression of a need for God’s guidance and help. All of these fasts share a common thread – their dependence on God. Fasting teaches us that God’s Word nourishes us: Matthew 4:1-4 records the only example of Jesus fasting, just prior to His being tempted in the wilderness. He faced temptation with these words, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 8:3-5 which tells about the 40 years Israel spent in the wilderness, depending daily on manna to sustain them. God humbled the Israelites through their hunger in order to teach them to depend on His Word to sustain them. This is an awesome example of the Word nourishing our hunger for spiritual food. Fasting teaches us that God’s will sustains us: John 4:31-35 records Jesus’ encounter with the woman at the well. When the disciples return, they encourage Jesus to eat. He responds by saying, “I have food to eat that you know not of.” He adds, “My food is to do the will of the Father.” Jesus gives us another principle of fasting that food alone is not enough. We are sustained by doing God’s will. Fasting teaches us that Jesus Himself sustains us: John 6:48-50 states, “I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.”. We see this pictured symbolically in the bread and the cup of the Lord’s Supper. Jesus is the source of eternal life. Fasting is feasting on Jesus.

What is the purpose of fasting? Fasting is designed to intensify our dependence on God by weakening our dependence of food and other things. HOW DOES FASTING DO THAT? Fasting reveals and heals our dependence on food (and other things) to fill the discomfort caused by low self-esteem, unfulfilling work, unloving relationships, uncontrolled circumstances etc. It removes the false peace derived from the pleasure of eating and indulging in other things. Richard Foster says, “More than any other discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us. This is a wonderful benefit to the true disciple who longs to be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ. We cover up what is inside us with food and other good things, but in fasting these things surface. If pride controls us, it will be revealed almost immediately. David writes in Psalm 69:10 “I humbled my soul with fasting”. Anger bitterness, jealousy, strife, fear – if they are within us, they will surface during fasting.” Fasting teaches us that we can go without getting what we want and survive. Fasting can free us from having to fulfill every desire that we have. It helps to teach moderation and instill discipline, not only in relation to food, but all areas of our lives. It teaches contentment as Timothy states in I Timothy 6:6 “Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

Fasting expresses our worship and deepens our hunger for God. Richard Foster says, “Fasting reminds us that we are sustained ‘by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’.” Food does not sustain us. GOD SUSTAINS US IN CHRIST. “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.” Colossians 1:17. Therefore, in your experience of fasting from food and other things, feast on God’s Word. It is ALWAYS ABOUT GOD!

STEPPING INTO YOUR FAST STEP 1: Clarify the purpose of your fast Why are you fasting? What is the purpose and the expectation of your time of consecration? Ask Holy Spirit to clarify why are you fasting. This is a God-led and God-initiated endeavor. Ask for specific strategies for your fast. BE INTENTIONAL with your purpose, intents, and expectations. STEP 2: Specify the type of fast you will undertake Pray about the type of fast you should undertake. Jesus implied that all of His disciples should fast. (Matthew 6:16-18; 9:14). For Him, it was a matter of WHEN His disciples would fast, not IF they would. As you prepare for this leg of your spiritual journey, decide on the following items up front:  How LONG will you fast – one meal, one day, one week, the whole 21 days  The TYPE of fast God wants you to undertake  What physical, social, financial, social media ACTIVITIES will you restrict  How much TIME will you devote each day to prayer and to God’s Word  WHERE will you meet with God daily Step 3: Prepare your heart, mind, and body for fasting Fasting is not a spur of the moment commitment; IT IS INTENTIONAL. The very foundation of fasting is REPENTANCE; because unconfessed sin can hinder your prayers. Here are a few suggestions to prepare your heart:  Fasting requires reasonable precautions. Consult your physician prior to the beginning of your fast. This will ensure that your body is ready if you have chronic or acute conditions and if you take prescription medications.  Do not rush into your fast. Eat smaller meals before the fast; as this will prepare your body. Avoid foods high in fat and sugar. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables  Prepare yourself by scheduling time alone with God. Remember that God is your Father and He loves you and is pulling for your success.  Confess every sin that the Holy Spirit calls to your remembrance and accept God’s forgiveness (1 John 1:9). Seek forgiveness from all who you have offended and forgive all who have hurt you (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4, 17:3-4). Make restitution as the Holy Spirit leads you.  Surrender every issue, fully, to Jesus Christ (Romans 12:1-2)  Prepare for SPIRITUAL WARFARE. Do not underestimate Satan and his attacks on you, your family, your money, your health, etc. during this time of dedication to God. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” 1 Peter 5:8  

PURCHASE A JOURNAL to chronicle all your prayers, expectations, conversations, oppositions, dreams, and MIRACLES that God manifests during your time of consecration. Commit to attending Worship services on Sunday and Corporate Prayer on Sunday and Thursday evenings. Being around other believers during this time will encourage you to keep going when fasting becomes difficult. Finally, and of profound importance: Jesus instruct us in Matthew 6:16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who

is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” This is a PERSONAL JOUR NEY and the strict details should not be something you constantly discuss with others. It is between YOU AND GOD!!

TYPES OF FASTS Now that we have explored Old and New Testament teaching and instruction on fasting, lets proceed to discuss specific types of fasts. Richard Foster offers us helpful words in his classic, Celebration of Discipline, “As with all the Disciplines, a progression should be observed; it is wise to learn to walk well before we try to run.” Biblical fasting almost always concerns food. Since the purpose of fasting is to focus on God, to humble ourselves and to remind ourselves that we are sustained by every work that proceeds from the mouth of God, then the task in fasting is connecting our “going without food” to “hungering for God”. 1. Absolute Fast (Full Fast) – This fast requires abstinence from all solid foods. It is a LIQUIDS ONLY fast. 2. Daniel Fast – No meat, sweet foods, or strong drinks (Daniel 10:2-3). This can also be considered a vegetarian diet. 3. Partial Fast – A partial fast is from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM or from sun up to sun down. You can select from 3 types of fasting – Absolute, Daniel or give up at least one item of food. 4. Entertainment Fast – A fast designed to abstain from activities that take your attention away from times of prayer (FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Social Media, TV, video games, unnecessary phone usage, shopping, excessive talking, concerts, alcohol, tobacco, addictions, etc.) Any true fast involves abstinence from food or at least certain types of food, there are fasting combinations that may work best for many people. The goal is to find the place where you feel focused on God and in tuned with spiritual things. This is the place where you feel light and spiritually alert to hear the voice of God. You will experience an increased spiritual energy – these are the effects of the fast working for you. This is your FAST ZONE. Find your FAST ZONE, BE INTENTIONAL AND FINISH STRONG.

If you do not choose to fast, or no matter what kind of fast you choose, seek God with us in prayer daily.

FINAL FASTING TIPS 

  

  

 

Create a fasting calendar that fits the type of fast that God has ordained for you. Determine what each day and week will look like. Keep your fridge and pantry stocked with the items you need. Being unprepared to fast sets you up to give in to temptation. Choose well when selecting products, stick to raw food as much as possible, and limit artificial ingredients. Make church attendance a priority. Being around other Christians will encourage you to keep going when it becomes difficult. If you “mess up” during the fast, don’t get discouraged. Just get right back on track and keep it moving. God’s mercies “are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). His desire is for you to finish; and He will give you the grace and strength to do it for His grace is sufficient. Read your Bible consistently, prayerfully, and expectantly Use the SOAP METHOD to journal your daily devotionals S – Scripture – Read prayerfully and take notice which scripture(s) catch your attention and mark it in your Bible. Read and Re-read the verses that speak to you and write them in your journal O – Observation – Focus on that scripture, tune in and listen to what God is saying to you through His Word. What is it about the scripture that stands out? What is God revealing to you through His Word? Write them in your journal. A – Application – Think of how this verse(s) applies your life right now. Write them in your journal P – Prayer – Wrap up you SOAP time in prayer. Talk to God about what you just read and ask Him to open the eyes of your understanding to hear what the Spirit is saying. Remember, prayer is a relationship; it’s a two-way conversation. Please be sure to LISTEN to what God has to say.

Beloved, Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and He shall bring it to pass! God be with you as you begin your 21-day appointment with God!
