Introduction The illustrated storybooks in this catalogue can roughly be divided into four groups, each of which belong to a certain period. The earliest period is fable books, followed by the early British children’s books and the gift books of ‘The Golden Age of Illustration’. The catalogue concludes with the contemporary modern picture book. It is helpful to know more about the general history of these periods in order to understand the context of the books in this catalogue. To this end, this introduction contains a brief guide of the history of the illustrated storybook.

Fable Books and the Early Fairy Tale Our enchanted journey through the history of the illustrated storybook begins with the fable. But what exactly is a fable? Generally speaking, a fable is a short story about animals with human characteristics and its goal is to convey a moral to the reader. The origin of this narrative form can be traced back to the sixth century BC. It is thought that the first fables were written by the Greek slave Aesop. Although no-one knows if he really existed, and none of his writings have survived, numerous tales are credited to him. Aesop began a rich tradition of fable writing. Apart from Aesop, the two most famous fable writers are probably the Roman slave Phaedrus (first century AD) and the French author Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695). Both drew on Aesop’s tales. Other less known authors used fables as a medium to express their own beliefs. Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) for instance, used fables to push his political agenda in times of censorship, while Antoinette Ockerse (1762-1828) used the stories to educate pious youth. As well as fables, fairy tales started to become popular in the 17th century. Writers like Charles Perrault (1628-1703) laid the literary foundation for the fairy tale genre. In opposition to Jean de la Fontaine and the other classicists, Perrault thought that modern literature was better and more valuable than classical literature. Although he still used animals as humans in his stories, his fictions are seen more as folktales than fables. Throughout the ages, fables have been a great source of inspiration for illustrators, but in comparison to other illustrated subjects, the early illustrations for fables were quite conservative. Artists like Jacobus Buys (1724-1801) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) made beautiful engraved plates, but there was great similarity in how the scenes were depicted. Between the 15th and 19th centuries, there was little to no evolution in the way fables were depicted. It was only when illustrators like J.J. Grandville (1803-1847) got their hands on the stories, that the fable illustrations became more varied. After that, all kinds of witty figures entered the stage.

As an addition to this chapter, a couple of works by Gustave Doré (1832-1883) have been included. Although these works do not strictly fall under the definition of fables and fairy tales, we added them because of their illustrative tradition.

Early British Children’s Books We jump forward in time to 19th century Britain. The industrial age brought a new worldview to the British Empire. A small group of wealthy Victorians called the shots while the large majority of the population led a less glorious existence. They may have had jobs, but the circumstances in which they lived were far below standard. The arts also suffered under the encroachment of industry. Inventiveness was nowhere to be found. At the end of the century a group of socialist artists felt it was time for change. ‘The Arts and Crafts Movement’ was founded under the leadership of designer and philosopher, William Morris (1834-1896). The Movement believed that the conditions of the working class would improve if they came into contact with aesthetic objects more often. The movement’s goal was “Bringing art to the common people”. One of the first and most influential followers of the movement was the illustrator Walter Crane (1845-1915). Crane was a student of the socialist engraver W. J. Linton (1812-1897) and dedicated his life to idealistic illustration, design and the applied arts. Crane got his inspiration from a broad spectrum of existing styles like Japanese prints, Medieval/Renaissance prints and the art of the Pre-Raphaelites. The last is beautifully visible in the faces of Crane’s figures. The children’s books illustrated by Crane were extraordinary in themselves because he did not divide the book into text and illustrations. He combined these two to make one piece of art, a synthesis of the arts, a picture book in the modern sense of the word. This meant that Crane designed every part of the book himself. He always signed his works with his initials and a small drawing of a crane (bird). For his children’s books, Crane frequently collaborated with the talented wood engraver and color printer Edmund Evans (18261905). Another illustrator who also collaborated with Evans was Crane’s competitor, Kate Greenaway (1846-1901). Greenaway was not directly involved in the ‘Arts and Crafts Movement’, but was seen more as a follower of Oscar Wilde’s ‘Aesthetic movement’. Her illustrations were based on her own childhood memories. She drew innocent children playing outdoors, dressed in ‘Victorian’ Regency clothing. These costumes, invented by Greenaway, became so popular that a London manufacturer started producing them.

Greenaway’s illustrations are wonderfully soft and endowed with child-like virtue and charm. Crane and Greenaway are key figures in late 19th century book illustration because of their break with tradition. They and the British illustrator Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886), were the first to start working with black outlines and soft flat colors instead of the more sketchy style of contemporary illustrators like John Tenniel (Alice in Wonderland). Crane and Greenaway stood at the dawn of the modern picture book. But before this period could really flourish, another important era was emerging, ‘The Golden Age of Illustration’.

The Golden Age of Illustration Shortly after the world became acquainted with Crane and Greenaway, a new age in the history of illustration emerged: the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’. This was a time in which the illustrated book was elevated to a new artistic level. It was the time of so called ‘gift books’. These gift books were luxurious, bound copies containing tales edited by popular British writers and poets. The beautiful stories, which were not necessarily written for children, were accompanied by illustrations with a high artistic value. The Golden Age of Illustration can be traced back to 1891, the year in which the leader of the ‘Arts and Crafts Movement’, William Morris (1834-1896), set up the Kelmscott press. He used this private press to produce books that were purely artistic in the way that they were printed, bound and designed. With famous followers like Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), the books produced by the Kelmscott press became immensely popular. Another group that had a lot of influence at the beginning of this golden age was Oscar Wilde’s (1854-1900) ‘Decadent Movement’, also known as the ‘Aesthetic Movement’. The illustrators, writers and poets in this group came together under the motto ‘l’art pour l’art’ (art for art's sake) and worked in a very extravagant fashion. Among its most famous followers were illustrators like Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), Laurence Housman (18651959) and Charles Ricketts (1866-1931). The illustrations of both movements were clearly influenced by broad range of historical styles. These then blended with the contemporary Art Nouveau. At the beginning of the 20th century, new printing techniques gave rise to a revolution in book illustration. The photogravure technique made it possible to make exact reproductions of detailed watercolors without losing the vibrancy of their colors.

Two artists that took full advantage of these innovations were the illustrators Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) and Edmund Dulac (1882-1953). Their fantasy illustrations can be seen as the most acclaimed works of their time and are still to this day, more than a hundred years later, incredibly popular. Besides using new technical innovations, Rackham and Dulac were the first illustrators to work in close collaboration with The Leicester Gallery. This gallery exhibited the original watercolors at the same time as the books were published. Each illustrator drew more and more on other sources for inspiration. Rackham focused on Teutonic tales for which he used a pallet of dark earthy tones and swirling lines, while Dulac looked to the Middle East as his source of inspiration. Others like Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) took more interest in contemporary styles like art deco. Gift books remained very popular until the First World War, when interest for these luxury editions decreased rapidly.

The Dawn of the Modern Picture Book After World War Two, expensive gift books started to fall by the wayside. The picture books of the type in the early British period, made a comeback. The illustrations in these books were not only a representation of the story, but sometimes told a different story than the text. This resulted in a shift of the text/image ratio, more pictures and less text. The audience for whom the books were intended, changed too. While the illustrated books were primarily intended for adults, the picture books were mainly produced for children. Another important shift took place in the relationship between the author and illustrator. The line between artist and author started to blur, and a crop of famous graphic designers set out to write and illustrate picture books as a way of exploring visual thinking. A beautiful example is Alfred Listal’s (1877-1956) book Wat Lisette droomde. He invented the story and made the illustrations. The chapter about the modern picture book shows the broad spectrum of book types included in the genre. This chapter aims to give a good outline of the history of the picture book, however there is still much more to discover. Sanne Hansler

Amsterdam, Johannes van Ravesteyn, 1672. Hardcover bound in an parchment manuscript page with rubrication (sentences in red ink) and decorated initials. The title is written on the spine in black ink. Written on the flyleaf is “Ex libris Joh: Conradi Zwinglij. Ao: 1693” and “Martini Usterii 1780”. Two Swiss stamps on the flyleaf and one on the title page. The book is in good condition. Very little to no browning in the pages. 16,5 x 10 cm, [4] 2-158 [4] pp., The book contains 41 woodcuts by Christoffel (II) van Sichem (c.1581-1658). This study book contains 40 fables by the Greek slave Aesopus (600 BC), with Greek and Latin text in parallel columns. Each fable is illustrated with a woodcut by Christoffel van Sichem. After the work of Aesopus the book continues with 42 fables by the Latin poet Avianus or Avienus (400 to 500 AD). The book concludes with the poem “Batrachomyomachia” or “Battle of the frogs and mice.” The ‘Fabulae Aesopi’ was one of the books that was made mandatory for education in Dutch schools in 1626. This edition was provided by the academic Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655) from Leiden and copied at least eleven times without any major changes, the last copy dates from 1727. The 41 woodcuts by van Sichem (in addition to the 40 woodcuts from the fables, there is a portrait of Aesopus together with “his” mythical creatures) were reproduced very precisely for the edition of 1649. One of those woodcuts kept the sign “CvS.” This is also the case in our edition from 1672. Reference no. 25887 (ZKL0001) € 2020.00

Bekker, Elisabeth Wolff; Agatha Deken Fabelen, Uitgegeven door E. Bekker Wed. A. Wolff en A. Deken. Den Haag, Isaac van Cleef, 1784. Hardcover with leather spine and paper covered boards. The spine is divided into six shields of which the second shows the gilded title on a red background. The front board is slightly disjointed and the first 10 pages have come loose. Ex libris (Adolph Melchior). The last page shows a pencil drawing. Overall the book is in fair condition. 10 x 23 cm, [xxxvi] 1172 pp. The book contains 40 emblem-like illustrations after Jacobus Buys (1724-1801), engraved by Antoine Alexandre Cardon (1739-1822). Only the title page illustration is signed, but the other illustrations show the same characteristics. The medallion portraits of Wolff and Deken are missing. Betje (Elisabeth) Wolff (1738-1804) and Aagje (Agatha) Deken (1741-1804) met each other in 1776. When Betje’ s husband died in 1777 they decided to move in together. This was the start of a fruitful partnership. They wrote many novels, poetry and idealistic manifests. In Fabelen Betje and Deken re-use old fables and transform them into beautiful new stories (12 stories after La Fontaine). The emblem-like engravings are an excellent addition to the text. Otherwise a good copy of the rare and only edition of this fable book by Pieter de la Court the younger. Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an outspoken character on the Dutch political scene in the 17th century. As a follower of Johan de Wit (1625-1672), De la Court became unpopular when the republican experiment backfired. Sinryke Fabulen was a great opportunity for him to air his political ideas disguised as fables. This book is a beautiful example of the synergy between fable literature and Dutch emblematic structure. Each story contains a picture, a Latin motto and a moral explanation. Three calf leather hardcovers with paper covered boards. The second shield on the spine shows the title on a red background and the third shows the volume on a green background. The page edges are untrimmed. The edges of the cover are slightly worn and a few pages show light foxing. All books are in good condition. 14 x 23 cm, vol. 1. [8] 1-166 [4] pp., vol. 2. [6] 1-155 [7] pp. Full-page illustrations after Jacobus Buys, engraved by Noach van der Meer (1741-1822), printed by Johannes Allart (1754-1816) (vol. 1. 54 ill., vol. 2. 62 ill., vol. 3. 33 ill.). C.F. Gellert (1715-1769) was a German poet. He studied theology at the University of Leipzig where he became professor of literature, philosophy and rhetoric. His writings were intended to raise the religious and moral character of the people, and his fables are great examples of this. Gellert was highly influenced by the fables of La Fontaine. The illustrations in this book are designed and drawn by the Dutch artist Jacobus Buys. Buys was a student of the Dutch painter Cornelis Troost (1696-1750). After his studies, Buys became a popular illustrator and started teaching at the Amsterdamse Teekenacademie, of which he later became the director. Reference no. 52556 (B2181) â‚Ź 318.00

Hardcover with red half linen binding covered with red and brown dotted paper. The binding is in very good condition. The content shows some light foxing and barely noticeable water damage at the bottom of the pages. 11.5 x 18.5 cm, [6] [iv] 1-296 [6]. With four plates from the first edition after Jacobus Buys, engraved by Noach van der Meer and printed by Johannes Allart. C.F. Gellert (1715-1769) was a German poet. La Fontaine, Jean de Fabelen van J. De la Fontaine in Nederduitsche vaerzen. (set of 4), Amsterdam, Johannes Allart, 1805. Set of four hardcovers with leather spines and paper covered boards. The spines are divided into six shields of which the second shield shows the gilded title on a red background and the fourth shield the volume. The mock ribs are decorated with a gilded pattern. Each volume contains an ex libris (Dr. Onno Hendrik Dijkstra). The spines of volume two and four are slightly loose at the top. The corners of all the books are slightly worn. Overall the books are in good condition (no foxing). Rare edition. 13 x 21 cm, vol. 1. [4] 1-208 pp., vol. 2. [4] 209-450 pp., vol. 3. [4] 451-676 pp., vol. 4. [4] 677-916 pp. The books are illustrated and engraved by (1711-1779) and Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816). Each story is accompanied by an engraving. The French author Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) was one of the most influential fable writers of all time. Although his stories are loosely based on the work of old masters like Aesop and Phaedrus, they were of such quality that they became immensely popular. De la Fontaine belonged to the Classicists, which meant that he took his inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. These views made him an opponent of Charles Perrault (1628-1703), the other famous story writer of the time, who thought that modern literature was superior to that of the olden days. The illustrations of Jan Punt and Reinier Vinkeles are a beautiful addition to De la Fontaine’s text. Vinkeles, who was the student of Punt, outshone his master later in life with his realistic nature engravings. Reference no. 8711 (L2244) ₏ 477.00

Fourth edition, Paris, d’Alexis Eymery, 1820. Quarter bound hardcover with marbled paper and leather spine. The title is vaguely visible, written in ink on the spine. The edges are marbled. The corners are bumped and the contents show minor foxing. Overall in good condition. 8.8 x 13.8 cm, [11] 6-216 pp. Apart from the frontispiece and the vignette below the title, the book is illustrated with 10 engravings and etchings which depict the fables of De la Fontaine. An oddity is that the title page is printed as if it was the third edition. An additional title page reveals that this is the fourth edition. The book is signed ‘Van Leeuwen 1830’. This French version of the fables of De la Fontaine is published in Paris as a study book for young people to learn about morality. Reference no. 38098 (B2366) € 47.70

A small hardcover in three quarter binding (leather and marbled paper). Gilded decoration and title on the spine. The edges are marbled. The hinge of the backboard is broken and the corners are slightly bumped. The contents show some water stains on the first few pages and minor foxing throughout. 8 x 14.2 cm, [6] [vi] 7- 178 [2] pp. Six engravings, four of which are double representations. All engravings are protected by a tissue guard. This French version of the fables of De la Fontaine is published in Paris as a study book for young people to learn about morality. Marbled edges with some pen marks. “Kon. Antheneum Antw.” handwritten on the first flyleaf. The contents present some smudges, writing and small tears. The first and last page show larger tears. [1] [page 15-18 incorrectly rebound] iii-x, 11-248 pp. The work contains 66 woodcuts, two per page. The plates correspond to the fables on the surrounding pages. La Fontaine, Jean de [illustrator: Grandville, J. J. ] Fables de La Fontaine. Illustrations par Grandville. Paris, Garnier Frères, 1852. Hardcover in bordeaux leather-look paper and a red leather spine with gilt stamped decorations and title in the second shield. The spine and edges are slightly worn. The interior shows some light foxing and finger smudges. 18 x 28 cm, [xxiii] 1-598 pp. The book contains multiple illustrations by Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard Grandville (1803-1847), which are engraved by several different artists like Matthew Urlwin Sears (fl. 1835-1852), Antoine Alphée Piaud (fl. 1837-1866) and Grandville himself. Jean Ignace Grandville was a French illustrator and caricaturist. His political satire became immensely popular. After the reinstitution of censorship on caricature in 1835, Grandville turned almost exclusively to book illustration, supplying illustrations for various standard works, such as The fables of La Fontaine, Don Quixote and Gulliver's Travels. He maintained his satirical way of depicting his subjects in these stories. His views on contemporary society are revealed even in his fables. Reference no. 60517 (B2317) € 127.20

The author of Ibrahim and Zulikah, Herman Jacques Constant von Nouhuys was raised by his aunt Maria Anna Besseling, to whom he dedicated this book. Nouhuys studied medicine, law and philosophy. Besides his studies he was a pianist, a painter and an author. The poem Ibrahim and Zulikah also appeared in the Heesterplanten collection (Amsterdam 1844). The story of Ibrahim and Zulikah is about two unfortunate lovers who are separated by Zulikah’s father until one night when Allah commands an angel to take them to paradise where they are happily reunited. Besides these portraits, the book contains nine vignettes, nine decorated initials and 107 medallion plates engraved by Jan van Vianen (c. 1660-after 1726), who was a student of the great artist Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). As the title describes, Phaedrus was a Roman slave that served under the reign of Emperor Augustus (1st century AD). He used parts of the Aesopian fables as inspiration for his stories. When put into context the fables can be seen as a political indictment against the regime under which he lived. The remarks on Phaedrus’ fables are written by David van Hoogstraten, who published a number of works in the field of Dutch linguistics. His oeuvre contains subjects like the gender of Dutch words (1700) and the Latin-Dutch dictionary (1704). Although he still used animals as humans in his stories, his stories can be seen as folktales rather than fables. His best known stories include Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, which would later be made immortal by Walt Disney. The engraved plates are designed by the French painter, sculptor and illustrator Gustave Doré. Doré is well known for his illustrative contribution to many classic stories like Cervantes' Don Quixote and Poe's The Raven. They have a distinct Romantic style. The front cover shows a pictorial scene of the song ‘Hey did-le did-le!’, while the back shows a crane (bird) holding the musical scores of the same song. The music for The Baby’s Opera was collected and arranged by Lucy Crane, Walter’s sister. The first edition of this book was published in 1877 by George Routledge & Sons. Walter Crane was one of the great innovative British book illustrators, along with Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) and Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886). In his early years he got his main inspiration from illuminated medieval manuscripts, Japanese prints and the pre-Raphaelites. The stories of the Arabian Nights were very popular in late 19 and early 20 century literature. Their mystical Eastern subjects were a source of endless inspiration for contemporary illustrators. The British illustrator John Dixon Batten took this opportunity to create some of his most beautiful works. His five full page plates in this book show the synergy between Art Nouveau illustration and Middle Eastern motifs. It is as if this book contains five separate works of art. More Fairy Tales from the Arabian Nights is a selection of stories from Galland’s Arabian Nights (1821) edited by E. Dixon. This book can be seen as one of the great masterpieces of the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’. Edmund Dulac’s illustrations show a beautiful Middle-Eastern world in earthy colors and Art Nouveau lines. The illustrations are tipped-in on decorated paper so that the images are framed by gold exotic patterns. The scenes that are depicted at night show Dulac’s famous kinds of blue, which his contemporaries appropriately called ‘Blue du Lac’ (blue as the lake). The original author, Omar Khayyam, was born in 1048 in the Persian town of Nishapur. He was, in his time, a highly respected scientist specialised in astronomy and geometry. In its most extensive form, the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyam has 110 quatrains (Quatrain / quatrain / Ruba'i). These are poems of four verses which may consist of two rhyming sounds, mostly a-b-b-a, but also a-b-a-b or other schemes. The last illustration of the wedding procession (‘Der Hochzeitszug’) has loosened and is now included in a plastic folder for protection. The story of Princess Badoura and Prince Camaralzaman are translated from English to German by Else v. Hollander. As one of the less popular stories of the Arabian Nights, Prinzessin Badura gave Dulac the freedom to express the story in a new way. There were little to no examples available, so Dulac created his own style. His illustrations are influenced by Japanese prints and Persian miniatures, although the faces of the characters still look very Art Nouveau. Kay Nielsen was a renowned artist from Denmark. His work Under the Sign of the Nightingale (Sous le Signe du Rossignol) was evidently inspired by Art Nouveau design as well as by Chinese print. Nielsen illustrated many stories such as the tales of Andersen, Perrault and the Arabian Nights. He later migrated to the United States where he worked for Walt Disney. In the literature on book illustration, Nielsen is usually referred to together with names such as Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham. His work was very innovative and progressive. The contents are in very good condition. 9 x 11.5 cm (yapp incl.), [9] 10-93 [4] pp. The book contains a full-page sepia colored frontispiece and 12 full-page illustrations by Laurence Housman, of which four are double-paged. There are 32 other smaller illustrations placed throughout the text. This book is a miniature version of the original Goblin Market, also illustrated by Housman, published in 1893. This rare book (only two other copies available online) is a beautiful example of the early ‘Golden Age’. Goblin Market is a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894, sister of the famous pre-Raphaelite artist Gabriel Rossetti) that she composed in 1859. It tells the story of two sisters, one of whom is seduced by the goblins to try their fruits. At this point the story takes a dramatic turn. The poem was well debated by literature scholars throughout the century. Some see Rossetti’s writing as an expression of early feminism and sexuality, while others see it as an indictment against the Victorian era. Van Deventer was a good friend of Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939), one of the first women in Europe to put together a large art collection. Helene Kröller-Müller had many of Bauer’s works, and this was the reason for Van Deventer to publish these illustrations by M.A.J. (Marius) Bauer, as a deluxe gift book for his friends. Bauer was a Dutch artist who found great inspiration in his trips to the Middle East and North Africa. He mostly made etchings, watercolors and oil paintings of Eastern cities, camels, elephants, Arabs and mosques. Jacques Pierre Bainville (1879-1936) was a popular French historian. He was praised for his accurate criticism of several political decisions on the First World War. In 1924 he wrote the Histoire de France, in which he gives a chronological overview of the most important events in French history. The Petite Histoire de France is a version that Bainville customised for French youth. The illustrations are made by Job, which is an alias for Jacques Marie Gaston Onfroy de Bréville (1858-1931). Before he studied at the École des Beaux-arts, Job was a soldier in the French army. His love for the military and France was a recurrent subject in his later work. The story and its illustrations can be seen as offensive to the inhabitants of the East Indies because they show slaves dancing in the same way as Jocko the orangutan. This book contains several different illustration techniques like polychrome, duotone, monochrome and line engravings designed by Marie Hohneck (fl. 1885-1920). Hans en Grietje is the Dutch version of the German story Hänsel und Gretel, recorded and written down by the Brothers Grimm. The story is translated by the Dutch author Christine Doorman (1858-1941). The illustrations are by the German artist Maria Hohneck. Hohneck, whose father was also a graphic artist, was an eminent example of an illustrator that used different styles to emphasize the events in the story. Another interesting fact is that if the illustration of Cinderella and the pumpkin are put next to Edmund Dulac’s illustration of Cinderella and her fairy godmother (Stories from Hans Andersen, 1911), there is a striking resemblance in how the scene is depicted. Nynke van Hichtum (1860-1939), pseudonym for Sjoukje Maria Diderika Troelstra-Bokma de Boer, was a Frisian Dutch children's author. Her oeuvre is comprehensive and contains classics like Vertellingen uit Duizend en één nacht, De lotgevallen van Robinson Crusoë and De sprookjes van de gebr. Grimm. It is also a parody of the travel stories of the 17th century. It is considered to be Swift's masterpiece and a classic of English literature. It has also become a popular children's book, for which the first two parts were adapted and the indecent scenes removed. This particular version is translated into Dutch by G. Blom.
