usical Machines & Living Dolls, the centerpiece of a new wing at the Morris Museum, is now open for the first time to the public. A major milestone in the history of music and technology, mechanical musical devices encompass the first form of music on-demand, serving as a precursor to today's recording industry. The collection includes machines playing a wide variety of musical genres covering classical, opera, folk, ragtime, polka and popular mus ic of past eras. Every category of musical machine is represented in the collection, which features cylinder and disc musical boxes. A tota I of 700 pieces, the exhibition features 150 pieces on rotation, from its world-renowned Murtogh 0. Guinness collection of mechanical musical instruments and automata. Largely dating to the 19th century, these ingenious objects once brought animated, musical entertainment to private settings and public places. Now, through video and audio technology, hands-on activities and live demonstrations of select instruments, visitors can see

hat the Armand Marseille Doll Company desperately needs is a really good press agent! Unfortunately the company has long since ceased operation, with the manufacturing of doll heads largely ending in the 1930s so it is up to collectors to start altering their conception, or perhaps misconception, of this large and very diverse company. The company was started by Armand Marseille who was born in 1856 in St. Petersburg, Russia (now Leningrad), but immigrated with his parents and five sisters to Germany soon after 1860. The Marseille famil y was quite well off which enabled Armand Marseille to purchase a toy factory located in Sonneberg, Germany in 1884, followed a year later by the purchase of a porcelain factory in Koppelsdorf. It was shortly thereafter in 1890 that he began producing doll heads and by the turn of the century he dominated the production of bisque doll heads in Germany. It is the prolific output in production, with numbers reported as high as 550 full time employees turning out 1000 doll heads a day, that accounts for the impression many have of Armand Marseille (AM) dolls being common. For most collectors the mould numbers 370 and 390 (numbers representing the socket and shoulder head variations of the same mould) are most strongly associated with the firm . This is totaLly understandable considering the huge number of these moulds produced starting in 1890 for almost a 30-year period, resulting not only in their abundance but affordability at doll sales today. However, the close association of Armand Marseille with just the one doll is a grave injustice. If pushed further many collectors will also connect the company with the many different baby dolls they

produced, such as the Dream baby; the dolly faced dolls which included Rosebud and Queen Louise; some goog lies and perhaps the very impish "Just Me". However few would think to rank Armand Marseille dolls at the same level of artistry and brilliance that one associates with Kammer & Reinhardt and their haunting characte r line of child d olls. And this would be a mistake. The emergence of the character dolls in German y is often attributed to the year 1908 when a group of doll artists, both known and unknow n, participated in an exhibition at the Hermann Tietz store in Munich, Germany. The artists were presented w ith the challenge of creating dolls with as realistic a look as possible and I suspect this was a welcome opportunity to finall y exercise their artistic abilities. This represented a large departure from the idealized head s and dolly-face dolls that had dominated the market until that d ate. The new sculpt of child d olls began a movement known as Puppen (doll) Reform and the character d olls w ith their sensitive and realistic portrayal of child ren took hold. The doll faces now often portrayed emotions such as playfulness, pensiveness, and teasing. rt is interesting to note that this is not the first time that more realistic mod eling was introduced in Germany, but earlier attempts mad e around 1880 did not take hold. Accordingly, it can be said that it was not the year 1908 that gave birth to the character movement but the changing times and new perspective of children.• Kammer & Reinhardt was the first of the major companies in Germany to mass produce the character doll and their 101 through 117 series represents some of the best doll art ever produced. The rare numbers, in particular the 103, 104, 105 and 106, can bring astounding prices that are in keeping with the scarcity and artistry of those moulds. Kammer & Reinhold called their new doll line "art dolls" and at first produced dolls only with painted eyes which were blamed for the dismal sales. The immediate enthusiasm for these dolls after the 1908 exhibition was short lived as they were not met with the popularity from the buying public as anticipated. These new art dolls had a broader appeal to the adult buyer but were not as appealing to children that seemed to prefer the idealized dolls they were accustomed to. 2 According to Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik, a German newspaper at the time reported that thousands of these character doll heads were being destroyed in the warehouse and factories since there were no buyers!1 Wouldn't we all have loved to have been there and rescued some of these great dolls, but it is no wonder they are so scarce today. The eventual introduction of sleep eyes, and in particular the popular 117 mould known as Mein Liebling, helped to revive some popularity to the art doll. When researching German character dolls the name Kammer & Reinhardt is always prominent, along with
Marion Kaulitz and the Munich Art dolls with mentions given to other firms such as J. 0 Kes tner, Simon & Halbig, Franz Schmidt, and Gebruder Heubach; but rarely are Armand Marseille dolls even g iven a nod. I would propose that some of the dolls produced by Armand Marseille as part of the art doll movement rivals anything that was conceived by Kammer & Reinhardt with wonderful facial sculpting that demonstrates great sensitivity and creativity. In today's doll market these dolls are at prices, though extremely high for an AM doll, that seem like a bargain compared to what the rare Kammer & Reinhardt dolls can command. Tam referring to the dolls that are found with the AM mark but have no mold number and feature children's faces with painted eyes or the artistically rendered intaglio eyes. (For those not acquainted with the term, intag lio eyes are incised into the mold with a deeply depressed pupil.) Be warned these dolls are extremely scarce but well worth the hunt! This is not to say that Armand Marseille Company did not produce some wonderful character dolls that are much easier to find for sale and reasonably priced but s till have very high quality bisque and wonderfully sculpted faces. Unlike the dolls just discussed, these will be found with mould numbers and often have interesting variations with the same doll face. For example the well-recognized Fany, created in 1912, comes with molded hair as #230 or a wigged variation as #231, both with glass eyes. standard body. The very lovely 550 glass eyed child is a socket head, but can also be found as a shoulder head. All of these character art dolls have the common thread of portraying realistic and expressive faces with the use of sculpting in the eyes, the turn of the mouth, the definition in the chin, the slant of the eyebrows and the molding of the nose. Each is an individual work of art and lacks the vacant faces so prevalent in the dolls that were being mass-produced in the past. These dolls deserve to be a part of any serious collection of German character dolls and their importance in that movement should not be over-shadowed by some of the more prominent names associated with character dolls. It is my hope that this article will spur interest in these often underappreciated dolls and that the Armand Marseille Company will gain the respect their artistry clearly merits. Footnotes 1. e . n a Scav;n;, the artist and owner of the Lend Company, began making felt dolls and formed her company in 1919. She was an innovator and experimented with many different ways to create a soft character type doll. She wanted to make a doll that had a nose and cheeks that would protrude from the face, unlike the Steiff dolls that had a seam down the center of the face. Working with an old felt hat, she finally found a material that was pliable, could be formed, and the felt would remain sharply molded when it dried. She immediately approached the Borsalino Felt Company and asked them to make her a very
thin felt fabric, which could be molded into her doll faces. This fabric came to be known as "Pano Lenci". Elena's brother Bubine was the genius behind the process that allowed the faces to be pressed. He manufactured the first steam press, made the molds by hand, and refined the process that would be used for eighty-two years by both the Lenci and Anili Doll Companies. The process changed only slightly from the first dolls in 1919 to the last dolls produced in 2001. Elena owned the Lenci Company up until1936, when her husband's health and financia l concerns forced her to sell their interest, to business partners, Pilade and Flavio Carella. A contract was drawn up that required Elena to remain with Lenci as Artistic Director until 1941. First shown at the Leipzig Fair in 1920, this whimsical model 102 is ven; typical of tire early Lend Characters. Dolls like this represent Madame Lend's original concept of a doll that would make children laugh, and allow them imaginative play. He is marked with a tiny metal button, similar to the one used by Steiff, which is attached to his pants.
restricted her from designing, making or selling any type of doll for 10 years after the expiration of the contract. The Lenci name belonged to the Company and she could never use it in conjunction with any doll venture in the future, even though she was always personally known by the name, "Lend". Elena did not complete her contract with the Garellas'. World War II was eminent and she fled to the hills above the city of Turin, Italy, with her children. She purchased a small piece of land, with the proceeds from her husband's insurance policy, and had a house built on the property. Her daughter, Anili and her son, Carlino, accompanied her to live in relative safety away from the city. Anili was trained as a weaver, and she became quite an accomplished fabric designer. Elena kept the family going during the war by buying antique furniture and adding ornate, artistic carving and then reselling it. In 1946, Elena sculpted four
In 1929 Lenci introduced an unusual female version of Pierrot, model 576. She is 27-1/2 inches tall, and can be distinguished from the earlier Pierrot by the unique face mold, and by tire guitar she carries instead of a mandolin.
This 19 inch, circa 1927 Series 110/64 doll's outfit came in several different colors. Most Lend's have felt shoes, but this one has finely crafted leather shoes.
Lend's first line of dolls, introduced in 1920, included several11 inch "winkers." All were identified as model121, and were dressed as street urchins. None of tire early winker dolls wore shoes.

The cmdleboard holding a small Lenci baby is carried on the back of the Series 300 Indian maiden. This baby has also been found with closed eyes.
The colorful Lenci Russian boy is Series 300/48 and was introduced in 1930. He will always have bright orange hair, and should have a pair of white felt gloves that tuck into his belt, but are often missing.
The Series 300 Indian Maiden is listed in the 1933 catalogue as Modell00/39 (Lenci changed their model identification system in 1933). She carries a cradleboard on her back with a small Lenci Papoose. The Indian Maiden is one of the best and rarest of the Lenci pairs. She is paired with an equally rare Indian brave. 28
In 1930, Lenci changed the face sculpt of the Series 149 dolls, giving them a smiling face with teeth. The dolls are incredibly rare and the brown hair (instead of blonde) adds more value to this doll. She is Series 149/29.
faces for her daughter to help her start her own doll company. The initial Anili Dolls were made of celluloid. Anili never mentioned Elena's name, or the fact that her mother was the famous Madame Lend. In 1953 production began on the Anili Felt Dolls and continued through 1988. The process used to mold the felt faces in 1919 never changed through the entire production of both Lend and Anili dolls. I had the great privilege to correspond with both Carla "Poma" Caso, and her brother Alberto "Noni" Marvelli, the son and daughter of Anili, and the grandchildren of Madame Lend. As a young man, Alberto worked in his mother's factory molding doll faces, and he graciously shared with me the process of making the felt Lend and Anili dolls and the molds.
Making the Molds: Bubine Koenig, Elena Scavini's brother, was the real genius behind the process. First Elena would sculpt a doll head using Plastiline. Plaster of Paris was then poured over the sculpt
This Lenci boudoir doll, along with his girl counterpart, is extremely rare. Dressed in whimsical costumes, in hot pink, gold, orange and black, they are very bright and colorful. He measures 25 inches and was introduced in 1925 as Mode/194.
to form a negative shell. Using the negative shell, oil or Vaseline coated the inside of the mold, and plaster was poured into the negative shell to form a positive mold of the face. The plaster mold was then sent to an expert craftsman to be refinished and polished. The positive mold was made conductive by spraying a thin layer of graphite on the fa ce, and putting it in a galvanic bath in order to deposit a thick layer of copper on it. A small copper tube was then soldered all around the copper shell for the steam heating. The back of the copper shell was soldered to a brass plate thus formin g the top part of the face mold. Once the mold was made, the copper shell was then immersed in a box full of cement, forming the negative mold. The mouth of the tubing that would deliver the steam to the mold was kept dear of the cement in the box. Lead was then poured into the negative mold to form a positive mold. When lead cools it shrinks but not enough to allow the spacing necessary to accommodate the felt and the buckram (also known as tulle in Italy) that will form the faces of the dolls. Spedal craftsmen using files, and engraving tools, would refine the lead positive mold until the correct spacing was achieved. The mold is now ready for production.
Paired with the boudoir boy performer, this extremely rare doll is dressed in the same bright colors as her male counterpart. These dolls wear extremely innovative costumes that remind us of "Cirque du Soleil" costumes. The girl is mode/193.
Early Lenci children, in traduced in 1922-23, typically have dots for eyebrow. The clothing was less intricate than in the later years of the Lenci Company. The 1922-23 catalogue did not list model numbers for the dolls.

This is one of Madame Lenci's early dolls marked with a small metal button attached to his collar. He is 24 inches tall. This face mold was not used for any other doll. He is extremely rare.
Preparing the Felt and Buckram for Molding:
In the 1926 catalogue, this doll is listed as "Nunu" and was style number 555. She is 31-1/2 inches tall. The face of this doll is referred to by the collectors as Marlene Dietrich.
Celluloid is diluted in acetone and the mixture is then sprayed on the outside of the felt, using an air gun. "Appretto," a liquid glue made with water, dextrin, aluminum sulfate and acetic acid is then sprayed on the back side of the felt, and on the front side of the buckram fabric, also known as "tulle" in Italy. The buckram fabric was previously prepared with radial cuts to allow more flexibility and to avoid creases during the molding. The celluloid was used to smooth out the nap of the felt on the front of the face so it can be painted. The "Appretto" when humidified, becomes sticky at 100 degrees centigrade and adheres the buckram and felt together. Celluloid was used during most of the early production at both the Lenci and Anili factories, but in the later years of production, cellulose acetate was substituted, because of the flammability of celluloid. Italian government regulations no longer allowed the use of celluloid.
This Lenci black jester, circa 19201921, did not appear in any catalogues or advertisements; he has a small metal button attached to the back of his coat. This type of character was very typical of the whimsical nature of Madame Lenci's early dolls.
This wide-eyed girl is one of the earliest Miniatures. The way the eyes were painted changed very quickly after 1929. She dates from the first year of production, and is style 3004. She is 8-1/2 inches tall and holds her own flower pot.
In 1931 Lenci introduced the 36 inch Four Season's Dolls, wrongly listed in the catalogue as being 48 inches. Autunno (Autumn), model Z/6 wears a many layered green and orange organdy dress, and an elaborate crown of leaves and fruit. This girl is extremely rare, and the only example of a black doll in the Series 70 line that has been found. She is 10-1/2 inches tall, and dates from tl1e early 1930's.
The Molding Process:
This series 111/19 girl from 1927 wears an aqua coat with fur trim and has the later, refined face and separate fingers. She is 13 inches tall.
The machinery consisted of a steam generator, a steam chamber, and the hand press. The steam was used for heating the molds, for humidifying the treated felt and buckram, and to soften the glue mixture on the fabrics. The sheets of buckram and felt were placed in the steam chamber for five to seven minutes. They were then layered on the mold with an oiled paper sheet on top of the positive mold for easy removal after pressing. The presses were operated by a hand crank that allowed the mold pieces to be married together with the felt and buckram between. First the positive mold is cranked into the negative shell with the fabric in between, making sure there are no creases. The felt is pulled by hand on all sides to eliminate any potential creasing. The press is then hand cranked all the way down, and left under pressure for five to seven minutes. When the molded heads are removed from the press they are
This series 80/23 Cowboy was introduced in the 1933 catalogue and has the same face ns the Series 111 dolls, but is on a taller body, of 14-1/2 inches. These dolls came mostly in pairs. 31
allowed to dry on an open table for twenty-four hours. The heads were then "varnished" with a brush using the same celluloid-acetone mixture used prior to the steam process. Once they were d ry the heads were again put in the mold and p ressed for two to three minutes to obtain a smooth felt surface exactly matching the mold. This allowed the doll to be less likely to collect dust and easier to clean. Madame Lenci was one of the pioneer women in her field, using the felt molding process to make dolls. She stumbled on the pliability of felt, and followed through by asking Borsalino to make her a thin felt. She saw the possibilities of molding and making dolls from felt very early, even though felt was used mostly to make hats at that time. The process has not changed much since 1919. H er daughter Anili carried on her mother's legacy. Many felt doll makers today are using the same methods employed by Lend and Anili for over 80 years.

This felt mask is one of the last examples of the Anili, Grugnetto dolls. This shows the construction of the mnsk face immediately after it comes out of the steam press and the mold. Alberto "Noni" Marvelli, Madame Lenci's grandson, provided this example. He worked in the Anili factory pressing faces while waiting to enter college. The process used by both Lenci and Anili was exactly the same.
This 1929 Opium smoker is Style 567. She measures 29-1/2 ind1es and is always found in the seated position. Her face was used for many boudoir dolls, but the open mouth version with teeth is rarer.

Although the Sultan is not found in any of the known Lenci catalogues, he was probably made during the first half of the 1920's. Note the carved wooden Elephant is around his neck. 32
Although tire photograph appears that this side of the face is actually convex (protruding outward) this is actually the inside of the mask face and it is convex or the inside of the face. Visible is the layer of felt, then the layer of buckram to keep tfre mask face stiff and last, the waxed paper to keep it from adhering to the molds. Lenci and Ani/i used the same steam press and molding process.

~ lthough I find myself at a (temporary?) standstill in my search for
£ L- prime source material on Louise R. Kampes and the various
models of her doth dolls, people have continued to share the bits that they know and, most generous of all, to allow me to study and photograph examples of these channing dolls. Nancy Smith insisted that I must see this unusual (and perhaps unique) pair of Black Kamkins in the collection of Jane Alton. One day, with some advanced warning, they arrived on a U.P.S. truck in a large carton containing another doll from Nancy's own collection. I am continually amazed by the amount of trust involved in this kind of research. It can not be done in a library and only by handling the actual artifacts can one begin to understand them. Jane Alton and I had never met, but she trusted Nancy enough to allow her to send the dolls to me. I agree with Nancy that they are indeed special and perhaps by sharing them now, other information may come forward. The pair are all original, with the possible exception of the girl's shoes. Winnie Langley had said that women who worked for Louise Kampes told her of "Special Order" dolls that were modified to resemble their young owners. It is possible that this pair were made for an upper middle class African American family. The Girl is 18" (45.5 em.) tall and her fraternal twin is 18-3/4" (47.5 em.) tall. They both have very dark brown faces. The bodies are brown cotton which have faded considerably wherever they have been exposed to light. The fading leaves an imprint of each layer of clothing on the bodies of the dolls. Thus the true body color can be found only under the shoes, under the buttons on the boy's shirt with a little more fading under the overlap of the shirt front, the collar and under the socks. The design of the under teddy also shows on his body. There is even a clear "print" of the hem stitching that finishes the neck opening. The girl's body is similarly faded, with her true color found under her teddy and shoes. She must have spent considerable time with the light source on her right side because her fading is more pronounced on her right limbs and the right side of her left leg. The outside of her right arm shows some fabric wear, but that is the only damage on these dolls which are otherwise in excellent condition. They have the usual later Kamkins tab jointed arms and hinge jointed legs, but no sign of voice boxes. They are both unmarked. 37

NEW YORK Ad from "Playthings" August 1934, showing the hairstyle I believe the black girl had. The dress is organdy and quite different. Th is was after Louise Kampes sold the company and the new group attempted to sell them in New York. They advertised in both "Toys and Novelties" and "Playthings" with farge picture ads in August and September 1934. They used a smaller ad in October and by December had only a small boxed ad. There were no further ads.
The heads are wonderful. They have the usual single stroke black arched eyebrows. Both have typ ical bow shaped mouths in bright red . The face mask is clearly Kamkins. The girl has a completely oil painted head with a single sealed seam in the rear. Her nose is short, upturned and snub while her upper lip is prominent. She has narrow almond shaped eyes with burnt sienna irises, with darker shading to give them depth, and a white highlight dot in the upper right area of the irises. She has black upper lash lines, red tear ducts and narrow, sha rply arched single stroke eyebrows. Her nostrils are accented in the same bright red. She has soft, wavy black mohair with a left side part, arranged in a small knot at the low back of her head . Ads in Playthings and Toys and Novelties in August and September of 1934 show a white girl doll with a similar wig arranged in two short braids and it seems likely that the black girl's hair was originally in similar short braids. Her dress is also similar in style to that worn by the girl in the September ad (not shown) and press release. It is a soft yellow cotton, with kimono short sleeves with cuffs, and a round yoke, having a central dip. This dip is decorated with five aqua French knots. There is a central box pleat coming from the bottom of the "dip" and two pleats on either side of this box pleat which d rop cleanly to the hem. The pleat pattern is repeated in the back of the dress. The 1-1 I 4" hem is machine stitched with no contrasting color. The dress fastens in the back with two snaps. Her matching tedd y is typical Kamkins with the leg hems machine stitched in aqua with a yellow bobbin. Her matching cotton hat has five wedge shaped pieces in the crown and a brim which is 3 I 4" wide in the back and 2" wide just left of center front. It is decorated with an 11 I 16" black silk ribbon around the

base of the crown. Her yellow socks have narrow aqua stripes. She has black oil cloth slippers with a scallop cut to the front and tape ties. H er brother has the same very dark brown paint on his entire head which has a single sealed seam in the back and a slight double chin in front. His eyes look to the right, and he may be the only Kamkins with side glancing eyes. This gives him a distinct character look. He also has gently modeled flesh folds below his narrow almond shaped eyes. His irises are burnt sienna with shading to give them depth and highlight dots at the upper right ed ge. He has upper black lash lines and thin single stroked sharply arched brows. He has the same bright red tear ducts, nostril decoration and lips as his sister. He has a smaller upper lip and a larger lower lip than his sister, but it is the usual Kamkins shape with a distinct bow in the upper lip. He also has a well modeled teardrop shaped philtrum. His wig cap is tan and loose woven with a curly black mohair wig. His head, like hers, is in excellent condition. His body has fading according to how many layers of clothing cover each part, but the fabric is sound. His clothing is typical Karnkins style, with the fabric chosen to go well with his coloring and to match his twin. He has a Kamkin Teddy in white with a single snap closure in the back. It is hemstitched in the same color around the neck and arm openings. The leg hems are accented in light aqua on top with a white bobbin thread. H e has a cream colored short sleeve shirt with three "mother of pearl" buttons closing the front. It buttons on to his light tangerine or peachy orange linen shorts. His socks are a darker cream w ith burnt sienna stripes. He wears the late Karnkins leather "low cuts" (Louise Kampes' term for the Mary Janes) in very dark brown. The dolls originally had Kamkins coats and hats which were separated from them at an auction more than ten years ago. I was able to track them down and Jay Lowe lent them to me for a photo shoot. of the dolls. They are both black double breasted "chinchilla clo th" with astrakhan cloth collars. Her coat has self fabric covered buttons and his has brass naval style buttons. She has a matching beret and he has a matching cap with a bill in the front. Her Kamkin handkerchief is tucked in her right pocket. Both coats have two front hip pockets with flaps at the tops. Although it was nice to be able to reunite the dolls and coats temporarily, the black color is not as attractive on Black dolls as the soft yellow, aqua and tangerine of their clothes under the coats. Twin Kamkins are very unusual as the dolls were very expensive ($10 for one with a coat and hat in the 1920s) Lucky children could eithe r collect original Kamkins clothing or make a wardrobe for their doll. These Black twins are probably unique. One w ould love to know their provenance. 39

n the mid nineteenth century Paris donned its gayest attire, and the more than one hundred doll and toy shops overflowed with miniature treasures for young boys and girls. The hearts of the little folks rejoiced at the display of playthings. Above all other toys, little girls preferred dolls. There was variety enough to please even the most fastidious. On display were lady dolls with bisque or china heads, round, plump faces with peachy complexions and dimpled cheeks, rosy lips and glass eyes of deep blue. Blonde beauties always, they possessed altogether a saucy, knowing expression as they turned their heads about in every direction. Set on a number of different styles of bodies made of different types of materials, they copied admirably the ladies of the period. Offered for sale in the magical magasins were dresses, headgear, wraps and underwear and accessories. Indeed, every article deemed necessary to the feminine toilette was produced in miniature for these luxury lady dolls. Resplendent trousseaus contained countless items of whitework made up in fine cotton and lightweight linen.
Chemises were edged with tiny embroidered scallops or fme Valenciennes lace. Pairs of drawers and petticoats were made to correspond. Elegant combing jackets were richly ornamented with Broderie Anglaise. Among the fancies was a guimp, or "body of a fichu" and matching manches, or undersleeves. And there were coiffes, little cotton caps to wear by day or by night, some perfectly plain, others highly decorated. Besides the underpinnings, other pretty additions to the toilette were destined to be worn with low neckline dresses or skirts with high waistbands. De rigeur were dainty, little chemisettes made up in thin, white batiste, nainsook and organdies, and fine French muslins. They were fashioned with necklines high and rounded with pointed collars, or low and rounded, or low and very much squared. Sleeves were short and puffed, or long and full with dainty cuffs, while others were long and fitted. Trimmings included rows of narrow tucks, petite flounces and fluted ruffles, narrow puffings and insertions, and embroidery of the finest kind.

This doll is in the author's collection and is acquiring a rather extensive trousseau, modeled after the original trousseau belonging to the doll, Violette D'Epigny, from La Musee De La Poup~, in Paris. Displayed around the trunk are six ensembles made from the tuniquc pattern featured in the article, "The Summer Tw1ique Of Violette D'Epigny" in the October, 2007, issue. 41
ln the first year of publication, the French magazine, so well known to the dolt world today, La Poupee Modele, featured a pattern for a chemisette in the June, 1864 issue. " .... a chemisette of muslin or jaconais, which will be worn with all the dresses of Miss Lily, with her vests, and above all with the dresses which don't have a bodice. The tucks are sewn with a fine running stitch. Instead of making these tucks, if you make some gathers, you will have a bodice which you can wear with any lightweight fabric, and will be very suitable for the summer dresses of your doll .... the short sleeve of the chemisette is bouffant; it is gathered on the top and the bottom, and garnished with an embroidered cuff. You can make the little flowers which edge the flounce of the cuff with embroidered dots or feather stitch with very fine cotton ... For more elegance, sew a little lace under the flounce. The square neckline of this chemisette is embroidered the same. You also garnish it with lace. You can, if you don't wish to embroider the cuff, replace it by using some entre-deux."
Two years later, the March, 1866, issue also had a chemisette pattern. "There are several ways to make this chemisette. First, you can make it out of plain nainsook, and embroider it as indicated on the pattern. This embroidery consists of pierced eyelets ... You could also cut out the chemisette from lightweight muslin, and instead of the large tucks, you could make tiny tucks as on the sketch, and position at intervals, between these tucks, a cotton guipure with large openings, like a beading lace, through which you can thread a piece of black or colored velvet ribbon. The same kind of trimming should be sewn around the neckline, around the sleeves, and should hide the seam of the shoulder." 42
The March, 1868, issue contained two patterns " ... for size 4 dolls, a very elegant, low-cut chemisette. Size 2 dolls will find a high-necked one a little further on ... This chemisette is cut out of very lightweight muslin and is trimmed with white guipure and blue, green, cherry red, pink, or lilac ribbons. It can be worn with a skirt made from the same type of muslin and trimmed with similar ribbons and guipure ... The cuff is covered with a ribbon in the shade that you chose for the ornamentation on the chemisette; you cover this ribbon (taffeta or satin) with narrow white guipure about one centimeter wide, placed side by side. The front is trimmed with the same type of guipure, placed on a transparency of the same ribbon. Around the low neckline and the shoulders, the same ribbon is placed squarely and covered over with guipure ... You trim the shoulders likewise in the same way, on each side. (A "transparency of ribbon" refers to a type of garnish formed by sewing a length of ribbon flat on the garment; it is then covered by lace of the same width, also sewn flat, without gathering it. Cluny lace, or Cluny guipure was the lace usually used; this lace is a little heavier and almost gives the appearance of hand made, or crocheted lace. The finer Valenciennes lace was not often used for this trim. A "ribbon transparency" was a popular garnish for ladies as well as doJJ clothing; it is often seen on simple, factory chemises.)
There was little instruction for the high-necked chemisette. It was stated simply, "This chemisette ... is made out of lightweight muslin or nainsook. You trace the tucks before cutting out the bodice. The largest tuck in the front is embroidered with white or colored knot stitches, as is the cuff of the sleeve, which is a lon~ puffed one."
Presented here is a chemisette made from a pattern in the August, 1871, issue of La Poupee Modele. It is sized to fit a doll of 15 to 16 inches. Made of a fine, lightweight batiste, it is sewn by hand, with overcasting to neaten the seam edges. Valenciennes edging and insertion and broderie a11glnise are used as a garnish. The chemisette features details indicative of the style of this later date. Sleeves were no longer full and puffed with a cuff, but constructed with a more fitted upper and under sleeve of the coat form, made wide enough to pass the hand through. They are garnished with lace to suggest a separate cuff. It opens in the front rather than the back as the former chemisettes, and instead of the trim put on in vertical rows, it is set at an angle to simulate lapels. Earlier chemisettes had a separate waistband, while this one is simply hemmed. This chemisette is described in the "Explication des Travaux D 'AiguiJle" or, "Explanation of Needlework." "As mesdemoiselles the dolls, especially in this hot season, wear many bodices with low necklines, here is a pretty chemisette that can be worn with these sorts of bodices ... You make this chemisette out of lightweight muslin and you adorn it with Valenciennes entre-deux (false Valenciennes, of course!) or embroidered entre-deux form ing a ruffle around the simulated lapel on the front. The hem on the front opening is garnished with scalloped lace, that is to say, gathered and sewn, turning back and forth, just to the bottom of the trimming, so as to form a jabot. The top of the opening is garnished with the same gathered lace ... The edge of the sleeve is garnished with embroidered muslin entre-deux between two rows of gathered lace, rather lightly ruffled."
Two rows of Val insertion with one row of broderie in the center is set on the front, edged with gathered Val lace.
The back seam on the sleeve is sewn; the bottom edge is folded to the right side and stitched. A row of broderie with a row of gathered Val lace on each edge is sewn on. The front seam is then sewn. This method of trimming a sleeve when flat was often used during this period.
The bodice seams are sewn and the sleeves are set in. The bottom is hemmed, as well as the front opening.
The neckline is bound with a bias strip. Gathered Val lace is sewn at the top.
A row of full, gathered Val lace is set on the front opening, 1 I 4 inch from the edge.

Unbeknownst to Richard and Use Ottenberg they entered my life on Christmas morning 1953. Even as a not-yet-teenager my commitment to collecting dolls old, new, and in between was fairly well established, and now living in a foreign country - England - whole new opportunities beckoned. After all, with the recent coronation, the world was at the beginning of the second age of Elizabeth, a fact I took special interest in being an Elizabeth myself. At school I was being taught Shakespeare, but I more quickly learned the doggerel associated with English history. One of my favorites referenced the chronology of the six wives of the king Henry the Eighth: divorced, beheaded, died, divorce, beheaded, survived. Picking up on my new fascination Father Christmas, (actually my mother, Dorothy S. Coleman), always in search of a bargain, located at London's preeminent toy shop, Hamley's, some notfor-play but contemporary artist dolls for my Christmas. The first of my Ottenberg dolls was Henry Vlll, purchased in December 1953 for what was the
then equivalent of $8. At the same time my mother bought Jane Seymour, his third wife (died), for the then equivalent of $7.50, and also that same year, the fifth wife Katharine Howard (beheaded) for the going discounted rate on a wife. Up in London just after the new year of 1954 I took advantage of not only proximity to Hamley's but some Christmas gift money and on January 13th added wives number one, Katherine of Aragon, (divorced), and number two Anne Boleyn (beheaded). For some now unrecalled reason, and when I would have been many miles away in boarding school, wives number four; Anne of Cleves (divorced) and six Katherine Paar (survived) joined and completed my growing dysfunctional miniature Tudor family on February 23, 1954. After two years in England we returned to the United States bringing not only new dolls for the collection but the possibility of many new friends who over the years we would return to visit in England. It was to be on one of the return visits to England in

1970 when my mother was leading a tour of doll collectors that the Ottenberg name came up as a couple of doll artists the American contingent might enjoy meeting. The idea came from tour participants Allen and Mary Seward, family friends of both the Colemans and the Ottenbergs, though at that point we thought we were the only Americans to recognize the Ottenberg name. But to catch them was both the question and the secret: they were inveterate travelers with many world cruises under their belt. But the relaxing aspects of cruising had not always been a feature of Ottenberg life. Richard Ottenberg was to write: "(we) found refuge in hospitable England from an unbelievable Nazi persecution in November 1938." 1 Literally starting from scratch in their new home they started toy animal making using imported "American" doth. Later they introduced felt animals; no matter what the material all animals were of their own design and hand sewn. Things went fine until after the Second World War when cloth toy factories which had been detailed to war work returned to their original function. The handwork of the Ottenbergs could not compete in output with machines. Enter the option of doll making. Historically doll making in the British Isles had, by and large, been done with the nursery set in mind. The Ottenbergs set out to capture a new market, one of which was already in its naissance in the United States: doing dolls for a more mature audience. They began with the material they were most familiar with- doth, which they then painted. Then they moved on to dolls with felt bodies and the final touch being garments of silk. The break they were looking for, partial though it was, came with the dolls they made in 1951 for the Festival of Britain: Guardsmen, Yeomen of the Guard, H. M. Tower of London (Beefeaters) and Henry Vlli and his six wives. The dolls were much admired but few bought because as Ottenberg remarks: (consumers) "wanted golliwogs, grown-up dolls were not known in England." 2 Admiration for these dolls was based on their authenticity. The Ottenbergs traveled to the Tower of London to speak with the Chief Warden who apparently was completely bewildered when asked for the loan of a worn-out full dress tunic (the red one, not the daiJy blue one). After additional conversation the Warden suddenly started packing up the requested garment. From the Tower the Ottenbergs next went to the findings manufacturer who supplied needed buttons, buckles and the Like to the Tower and who now would supply the Ottenbergs. As the Ottenbergs suitcase was opened the manufacturer casually inquired if they had recently been to the Tower. Replying in the positive the manufacturer revealed that the brown wrapping paper was made especially for his company for use exclusively on goods going to the Tower. The manufacturer's curiosity did not end there. He pointed out that some of the ornaments on the tunic were gold, not gold wash but solid gold. And when the Ottenbergs returned home to Derby a shopkeeper inquired if, by any chance, they had been to the Tower of London recently. Apparently someone was concerned about who these people were who wanted to borrow a Beefeater's tunic to copy for of all things, a doll.
Inspiration for Henry VITI seems obvious, the great portrait by Henry's court painter Hans Holbein the younger. And indeed the Ottenbergs relied on the version at the nearby Derbyshire stately house, Chatsworth, home of the Dukes of Devonshire. There they were given access to the family's private library to study the remarkable portrait. But as artists themselves the Ottenbergs had trouble with the face in the painting; it seemed too flat. Upon seeing the Charles Laughton film version of Henry VITI and his six wives, "The Private Life of Henry VITI" (1933) they realized the actor's face was what they were looking for and so subsequent versions of the King combined features from the portrait and the actor. With the exception of Anne Boleyn, whose painted features Richard Ottenberg claimed were based on a portrait by the German artist Lucas Cranach the Younger, the Ottenberg wives of Henry Vill were based on Holbein portraits. Each character was identified with a typed label glued to the sole of the foot. For the regal attire of the Coleman group the Ottenbergs had chosen to co-mingle vintage and modem materials and findings. Unsurprisingly materials from the nineteen twenties and thirties were recycled and with the exception of Katharine of Aragon and Anne of Cleves all members of this Tudor family display such usage. As we have come to expect there were many commemorative items produced in recognition of the Coronation in 1953. Some were authorized, some were not. And obviously it was a point of pride and honor to have been selected to produce an authorized artifact; only two firms were authorized by the Coronation Authority (The Council of Industrial Design) to produce a doll of the Queen in her coronation robes. 3 There was however one small, but major, detail to over come. No one was to know what the Queen was to wear until the day before of the investiture. Consequently attire of pre coronation queens is pure fantasy, except for the color of the hair. From the court hairdresser the Ottenbergs obtained a small lock of the Queen's hair so they could match shades for their dolls. The evening before the coronation Sir Norman Hartnell's gown design was revealed to the press and the Ottenbergs and their helpers went to work, day and night, on the "Post Coronation" version. 4 An early example was sent to the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, then Lady of the Robes, for her inspection and criticism. She responded by letter that every detail was correct. Hartnell had even revealed to the Ottenbergs the secret four-leaf clover on the left side of the Coronation robe. lt was his idea that the Queen shou ld touch it for good luck while being anointed. The Ottenbergs have written that their output of coronation queens was limited to 150 pieces, each with its own certificate, but it is not clear whether this number reflects both pre and post coronation models. They have also written that because of extensive global press on their Queen Elizabeth II they were swamped with orders from all over the world. Ottenberg's notes include informative and reflective reminiscences on several others of their dolls. On their Queen Victoria at sixty five they write of an American collector who was studying English history and who encountered an examination question of what were the colors of mourning of Queen Victoria. She stunned her examiners by bringing forth and discussing her Ottenberg doll appropriately dressed in black, purple and white. Another figure was of the famous singer/actor PauJ Robson. The Ottenberg portrait doll was of him in his role as Othello at Stratfordupon-Avon. When Robson visited Derby, the home town of the Ottenbergs, they decided to present him with his representation in miniature. Robson's charmed response was: "I sat for five artists in Stratford and never for you - but yours is by far the best."5 Richard and lise Ottenberg were both physically small, almost pixie-like, exuding enthusiasm and humor. lise was the artist and tragically it was her eyesight that was to eventually deteriorate, thus

preventing them from creating more dolls. While her contributions to the processes are documented in the correspondence his are not. They worked by trial and error. She would model the heads and hands in clay and they would be cast in composition in plaster of Paris molds. In 1951, the Ottenbergs explored mass production of their nine models - yes, they were told it could be done, all they needed to do was place a minimum order: 10,000 of each head required. They were a bit taken aback when they realized they could end up with 90,000 heads. Needless to say their small production needs kept them from being buried under a mountain of commercially cast heads. For a while they linked up with fellow German refugees, Heinrich and Karl Schelhorn of Leicester (Leicestershire). The Schelhorns had been in the toy business in Sonneberg before immigrating to England and in their adopted homeland they experimented with producing a variety of components for dolls and toys. For the Ottenbergs they cast heads and hands of composition. All the while the Ottenbergs went on designing not only doll heads but hand made bodies which were built over a galvanized wire frame so that the arms were moveable. These armatures were covered with flesh colored felt over kapok stuffing. Lead was used in the feet to obtain a firm stand. So what did the Ottenbergs do in retirement aside from enjoying cruises and travel? They dabbled in dolls, exchanging their own creations for antique dolls and buying what they considered to be outstanding examples on their global travels. Their ties with the United States were strong; they had an adopted daughter living in the south that they visited frequently. And they entertained admiring doll collectors who found their way to the dolls' house on Rose Hill Street in Derby. While "Ottenberg" is not exactly a household name among doll collectors today, as the work of mid 20th century doll artists are rediscovered so to will be the creations of this remarkable, ever loving, couple who while not divorced or beheaded have sadly died but are survived by an engaging group of dolls. 1

Dean Murray

otorsport legend "Dizzy" Dean Murray passed away suddenly at his home in Kleinburg, Ontario. He is survived by his mother Ada MurrayWright, wife Lynn, daughter Cheri (Geoff), granddaughter Alyssa, and son, Dean Douglas. Dean joined the Canadian Navy at age 16 and set off to see the world. An adventurer and entrepreneur, he never looked back. After a stint in the Merchant Marine, Dean landed in Ontario. He was passionate about motorsport and spent his adult life promoting all facets of the sport. He is perhaps best remembered as the Editor of "Wheelspin News", the flamboyant track announcer and the tough fairminded car show producer. Forever the adventurer, Dean traveled the world, equally comfortable on the Concord to Paris or on a goat caravan in the Sahara. In recent years Dean and Lynn enjoyed sharing their travel expertise with their friends on the annual TLC Doll Tours to Europe and the UK. Those who knew him will remember his buoyant laughter, his congenial nature and his unwavering support of his wife, Lynn.
Jan Quisenberry ollowing a long illness, Jan F passed away last month. She will be remembered for her scintillating conversation, her brilliant sense of humor and her sparkling laughter. Jan grew up at UFDC, accompanying her Mother and Grandmother to events. She was the youngest President of UFDC, serving from 19891991. As their convention coordinator, she gave UFDC years of wonderful conventions. Her program on the Language of Fans was a perennial favorite. Jan was the recipient of the UFDC Award of Excellence for Meritorious Service in 1998. A talented artist, Jan's passion was for fine artist originals, especially the dolls of Dorothy Heizer and Beverly Walter. Clearly, Jan made an impact on all whom she met. She is survived by her mother, Iris (Goins), her brother Bart and her father, Rice. and hear these beautiful and intriguing historic objects and experience for themselves a largely lost chapter in entertainment history. any of the ma.ks used by Monsiem / - Delcroix were never registered with the office of the French government. This coupled with the fact that he used several different marks and in no particular order makes his history very difficult to trace. He was making dolls from 1865 to 1887 in Paris and Montreuil-Sous-Bois, Seine, France. Other than his marks, that is about all we know about him. Evidently, he was more concerned with making his dolls than leaving information for posterity. It is not known whether he made just the heads or the complete doll. A wide range of sizes of dolls were produced. Rightly or wrongly, it is assumed that the marks denoted the mold used. The most common mark seems to be "Paris" in block letters and the number to denote the size of the doll. The dolls marked "Paris Pan" usually have very appeali ng faces. Some Delcroix dolls are marked with a number only which adds to the confusion of identification of the dolls. As is in many cases, the only recourse left is to make the comparison with dolls having established Delcroix marks. Other marks found on Delcroix dolls are "HD", "HG", "SL", "S" with an "X" superimposed over the S, and later dolls marked "GO". The 27" De/croix Hopefully, someday enough examples will be found to study the progression ofthe body styles used by Delcroix. He also used this type of body with straight wrists.

The doll is incised "PARIS 10". This a typical mark used by De/croix. The placement of "PARIS" on the upper part of the head is one he continually used.

With no marks at all, it makes it imperative to have many examples of dolls to establish some sort of pattem that Delcroix used.
Grandjean was the firm that continued the work of Delcroix from 1887 to 1890 in Paris. The mark "G.D. was registered by Delcroix, so at least, that information can be confirmed. Mildred Seeley, noted doll expert, stated that because this company did not join the conglomerate of the Societe Francaise de Fabrication de Bebe & Jouets (S.F.B.J.) historic information is difficult to find. The only choice left is to learn about the dolls by gathering up as many examples as possible and comparing them. This method provides similarities in the types of marks used, the positions of the mark on the head, and the general appearance of the faces. The purpose of this article is to provide what little information that we do have with the hope that there are collectors who have a doll with one of the marks of a Delcroix. The job of retracing the steps of Delcroix has been made more difficult due to the possibility of a broken Jumeau head being replaced with a Delcroix head. At this point in time, this is strictly supposition but it seems plausible when so many of the Delcroix heads end up on Jumeau or

replaced bodies. It is also possible that this was done many years ago. At that time, Jumeau was the largest manufacturer of dolls in France and it is very unlikely that the company would purchase Delcroix heads. What seems more reasonable is that a Jumeau with a broken head was taken into one of the many doll repair shops in Paris and replaced with a Delcroix head. Again, there is no written evidence to support this theory but it is a possible explanation for Delcroix heads ending up on a different type of body. The wide range of authentic doll bodies that Delcroix used was extraordinary. Some of the larger dolls have straight wrists with the eight ball-jointed body similar to Jumeau. Others have the same balljointed body with the jointed wrists. This is another area that could be studied, if enough examples come to light. round eyes and are just a tiny bit cross-eyed. This is true on many of the most beautiful examples. The range of quality of both the heads and the bodies of the dolls is enormous. There again, there doesn't seem to be a continuity to the variety of workmanship. It is not unusual for a company to begin with high quality and gradually sink into a cheaper, poorly made product or, alternatively, to go in the opposite direction. With Delcroix, there is no specific direction. They are like the "little girl with the curl who is very good or she is horrible". Even though one Delcroix is far more beautiful than another, they are all rare and in many cases unknown by collectors. Do you have one hiding in your collection? If so, please let the author know and we can all learn more about these elusive dolls. HopefulJy, someday a lot of collectors will come forward with their Delcroix dolls and we wili be able to learn more about them through the process of comparative study of the various types. Albert Marque, A Sculptor, A Doll By Francois Theimer A nyone interested in the history of this special ./""\. and elusive French doll will enjoy this book by noted French doll researcher, Francois Theimer. As is his custom, the author describes the historical and sodal milieu of the time to make us better understand the driving force behind the creation of the doll. Biographies of Marque and Jeanne Victorine Margaine-Lacroix, the visionary fashion designer who selected Albert Marque to execute the doll, provide many fascinating details about their lives. It was determined that only 100 dolls be made, each to be numbered except for a few models intended for private use. Once completed the dolls were sent to the Margaine-Lacroix Gallery for assembly and dressing and their exhibition in the gallery in December of 1915. The dolls met with immediate success and special interest from American visitors, but by then the war had taken its toll and no further exhibitions took place in France. Forty dolls were purchased by Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum where they remained on display for many years before being packed away, their whereabouts today still a bit of a mystery. Color photographs of the doll (the example recently sold in the Theirner auction) as well as several examples in private collections, many examples of Albert Marque's sculptures, the innovative fashion designs of Jeanne Victorine MargaineLacroix, and the young girl who posed for the doll are included. The book is in French and comes with a French translation booklet.

Dolls and Accessories 1910-1930 By Dian Zillner his book, published last year, recently came to our attention and we feel it deserves a T review - better late than never! It follows the author's two prior books covering the same topic during the 1950's and the 30's and 40's. In 1910 the doll industry had changed little from the final years of the nineteenth century. Prior to World War I Germany continued to dominate with dolly type dolls. The first section of the book includes dolls by many of these makers with brief histories of each and well done color photographs. Bisque dolls include these traditional dolls as well as all bisques, and some of the baby dolls and character dolls that were produced shortly before the war. When Germany's doll exports were halted because of the war, this provided the impetus for the United States to develop its own doll industry. America's contribution to the doll world was signHicant and included dolls in all mediums; of particular interest are the sections on cloth, composition and wooden dolls by Schoenhut. Celluloid dolls, cloth, composition, metal, wood, comic and celebrity dolls, boudoir and pincushion dolls, World War I related dolls and doll furniture are all included along with brief histories for manufacturers, extensive color photographs, detailed descriptions and a price range, making this a valuable comprehensive book for the doll collector.
