public fell in love with her work. In addition to their skillful execution and vivid colors, Ceramic Arts Studio figurines are also prized for their durability. Thanks to extensive experimentation, the formulas for CAS clay slip mixtures and glazes do not craze: figurines created over 70 years ago still possess a “look” as fresh and vibrant as when they were first introduced. But the real reason for the success of Ceramic Arts Studio was the creative imagination of Betty Harrington. Her seemingly-inexhaustible supply of heartwarming themes runs the gamut, from playful children and frisky animals, to fairy tale favorites, dramatic personae, and — of course — “pretty ladies”! “pretty lady” figurines kissed the world goodbye. But, thanks to the imaginative design talent of the “ladies behind the ladies”, their beauty is enduring. . .and endearing. SHOPS & CENTERS It All Started With Flea Markets And Antique Shops For This Burlington Dealer Antique and Art Emporium and said to Ann, “Someday I’m going to sell antiques here”. Working 30 years for Verizon, Cel wanted to do something different. She retired nine years ago on November 30th and the very next day, December 1st, Black Swan Antiques was born at the Burlington Emporium and Cel’s aspirations were fulfilled. Today Cel and her husband, Bill, live in a home that’s over 100 years old, in Columbus, New Jersey. The By Kathleen Mullelly Photos by Jackie Sbrocco In her youth, Cel Shinkle learned to appreciate antiques from her mother. Cel would accompany her mother to the Columbus flea market or other markets in South Jersey. This ritual continued every weekend for the next 30 years, as Cel and her best friend, Ann, looked for bargains and treasures at flea markets and antique shops. Ten years ago Cel walked into the Historic Burlington
home is filled with primitive furniture and objects relating to the period of the home. Living only five minutes from the Columbus flea market, where it all started with her mother, Cel rolls out of bed every Thursday and Sunday at 6:00 a.m. and shops the aisles looking for bargains and antique treasures. For the last nine years Cel has sold primitive furniture, rugs, yellow ware, crocks and unusual items that would accent your primitive décor. Cel is the Emporium’s dealer with the green thumb.
Every spring for the last nine years she has filled the courtyard at the Emporium with flowers and items for your garden. We are always amazed to see what items can hold a plant. In the past shoppers have found plants in a funnel, a wine press, a coffeepot, cooking pot, an old mixer, a wash tub, iron chairs and iron stools! In the courtyard shoppers will also find cement statues, gargoyles, cement planters, benches, birdbaths, 1950’s era outside metal furniture, and much more. Almost every day one (Continued on page 6)

Richardson. The company was in production from 1915 until 1974: at the Gordon Pottery, Tunstall, England (1915-1942), then at the Britannia Pottery, Cobridge (1933-1974). The pottery is best known for designs by Charlotte Rhead, who from about 1935-1945 designed many products made using the tube-lining technique. Some of these, and some of the “Chintz” patterns, can realize strong prices at auction. Your George Washington plates would certainly appeal to collectors and if you are considering a sale, it may be worthwhile offering them as three pairs. Value: $200 to $300.

Sanford L. (“Sandy) Alderfer, the Chief Executive Officer of Alderfer Auction & Appraisal in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, has been inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame. The honor was bestowed on Alderfer at the NAA’s annual Conference and Show held July 19 in Spokane, Washington. In keeping with tradition, the award was kept a secret and came as a total surprise to Alderfer (and the other three recipients), but it was not a surprise to his wife, Gail, and other family members who joined him on stage. The story they told Sandy was that they were there for a family vacation in nearby Idaho, planned for after the Convention and Show. (That part of the story was true - one of Alderfer’s daughters, Charis, lives in Idaho). When his name was called to receive the honor, Alderfer stepped onto the stage to the welcoming arms of his sizable family, as well as NAA officials. The award was presented by Rob Doyle, a past Hall of Fame inductee. The award recognizes longstanding success as an auctioneer, service in the auction profession and positive contributions to the community. “Sandy Alderfer is a most worthy honoree on all counts, Mr. Doyle said, and the ensuing applause supported that remark. In his emotional acceptance remarks,
