State’s Auctioneers Association (PAA) Holds Conference In Harrisburg
By Kim Douglass
The auction industry is one of the oldest industries, and Pennsylvania is part of that history. The Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) began in 1948 and is still meeting every year for its annual Conference and Trade Show. This year marks 77 years! From Jan. 7 to 10, the organization met in Harrisburg to celebrate, network, and attend seminars to better the industry and its members. Back in 1948, the PAA was formed to help professionals in the auction industry to continually improve the standard of education, ethics and performance of its members.
The PAA is one of the largest auctioneer associations in the country, meeting once a year in Harrisburg, with local chapters meeting multiple times a year. Their conference consists of educational seminars, an Auctioneer Competition, Advertising & Marketing Contest, and a Fun Auction. The PAA is dedicated to making the auction industry stronger. The membership of the PAA is made up of auctioneers, trade members and other auction professionals who are passionate about the auction industry and the auction method of selling. The industry in Pennsylvania is regulated by the State Board of Auctioneer Examiners, which is one of the many Pennsylvania boards that requires a license. What this means is that anyone selling through the auction method in Pennsylvania (online or live) is required by law to hold a state issued license.
Focusing on education, the PAA provides continuing education to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses
held in other states that require continuing education. This annual conference allows the attendees to better serve their buyers, sellers, and the industry as a whole.
Over 200 auction professionals were in attendance, including auctioneers, apprentices, auction students, support personnel, vendors, and presenters.
Twenty-five presenters from around the country offered a wealth of information throughout the event. Yes, you read that correctly, 25 presenters! Although the conference hosted speakers from around the country, the highest concentration was from right here in the state from PAA members. The membership of the PAA consists of a wealth of knowledge and take networking seriously. In fact, over half of the presenters are valued members of the PAA.
Many readers of Antiques & Auction News would know them. Below is a list and the subject matter on which they lectured.

The attendees were able to interact with companies representing the industries of publishing, sound, recycling, auction bidding platforms, auction marketing, auction accounting systems, insurance, credit card processing, real estate listings, AI cataloging, moving, communications, shipping and more.

“They went to local Chester County collectors who was thrilled to get them,” said Leah Stevens of Briggs Auction Inc. On Dec. 6, the Garnet Valley, Pa., based auction house sold a framed grouping of four 18th century Chester County embroidered needlework hot pads/potholders for $43,050 (including buyer’s premium). In a gilt frame, measuring 15-by-12.25 inches, each was initialed and dated (1776) with foliate design. The pre-sale estimate was $200-$400. They were underbid by dealer Amy Finkel. The Collection of Edwin A. Dawes, Part III
Rare Mystery Clock And Lithographs Among Collectibles To Be Sold
This final sale from the collection of Alfred Dawes, (British, 1925-2023) a recognized authority on the history of magic, includes early broadsides, memorabilia from the Theatre RobertHoudin, magic textbooks, Victorian apparatus, and lithographs from the golden age of the art.
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce this 438-lot sale will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15, and will take place live at Potter & Potter’s gallery, in Chicago, Ill.
It will also be live streamed on the company’s website, which can be found at www. potterauctions.com. Phone and absentee bids are welcome.
The expected top lot is a Robert-Houdin mystery clock made in Paris in the 1840s. This striking eightday movement glass dial timepiece measures 17.75 inches tall and features an ormolu-decorated bronze case, a gilded wooden plush-covered base, and a gilded bezel surrounding
a clear glass dial with a single arrow shaped hand. This “Second Series” clock runs and keeps time despite no apparent connection between the dial and the base. This example was purchased by David Copperfield at auction in Paris and was obtained by Dr. Dawes from Copperfield in trade for a rare Chung Ling Soo billboard lithograph which now hangs in the International Museum and Library of the Conjuring Arts in Las Vegas, Nev.
Speaking of Ling Soo, a Chung Ling Soo (b. William E. Robinson, 1861-1918) titiled “Chung Ling Soo. From the Land of the Peacock” printed in London by J. Weiner Ltd. around 1908 is another highlight. The 30-by-20-inch linen backed poster is illustrated with a bust portrait of Soo at the center of a Chinese lantern, a peacock below, surrounded by Chinese trappings and a black border.
“The Universal Conjuror; or The Whole Art of Legerdemain As Practicsed by the Famous Breslaw….” is estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Okito’s (b. Tobias Bamberg, 1875-1963) “OKITO” was published in Paris by Catscha around 1930. This linen
backed, half-length portrait lithograph of the Dutch magician measures 63-by47.25 inches and pictures him dressed in a finely embroidered robe with a peacock feather-accented hat. This poster was printed in very limited numbers at the height of the performer’s career.

from Harry Houdini (b. Erik Weisz, 1874-1926) to fellow magician and colleague Alex De Vega (1892-1971) were written in New York City in the 1922 to 1925 time frame. De Vega was based in Glasgow and assisted with investigations into fraudulent spirit mediums. The notes are written on Houdini’s letterhead bearing his 278 W. 113th Street address. According to Potter & Potter’s experts, this is a fine and significant group of Houdini letters.
“This sale brings our suite of sales from the Dawes collection to a close, with a bang. The scope of the collection is well represented by this auction, which I’m sure will be an exciting event,” said Gabe Fajuri, president of Potter & Potter Auctions.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
What’s Hot, What’s
Not: 2025 Edition:
Part II
By Shawn Surmick
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. If Charles Dickens was describing the antiques and collectibles trade in 2024, this quote sums it up perfectly. In my last article, we looked at three collecting categories that had a strong year in 2024. Those three collecting categories were graded coins and currency, modern era Pokemon cards, and graded vintage toys. Each of these markets returned double digit to triple digit returns to astute collectors who bought right and followed the market. Still, 2024 wasn’t exactly booming for the entire trade. In fact, there were two pop culture collecting categories that actually returned negative growth in 2024, and some of these markets were on fire just a few short years ago. It would be a great disservice to ignore these markets. So buckle in, pour yourself a warm cup of tea, and if needed, grab yourself some tissues as we discuss two of the worst performing markets of 2024. The first market we need to discuss is the market for vintage comic books. I am sure the fact that this market made the list for one of the worst performing markets of 2024 is a surprise to many. After all, vintage key comic books can still be seen selling for eye popping sums. But, if you compare those sums to what similar issues were selling for in 2023 and even 2022 respectively, you will notice a very scary trend. Prices are down anywhere from 20 percent
or more across the board. What’s worse, some vintage comic books that were being propped up to new heights during the pandemic are not selling at all. There are several reasons for this. Number one, after a long love affair with Hollywood, audiences are finally growing tired with the glut of superhero movies that Marvel and DC Comics continue to throw at the box office. There have been some notable failures over the last few years, and even more alarming is the amount of superhero movies that have been getting shelved altogether. “Blade,” based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, was a highly anticipated movie that could not get out of pre-production. The box office receipts for a lot of the latest comic book heroes has been so bad that both Marvel (owned by Disney) and DC have been delaying and cancelling projects left and right. The sequel to 2022’s “Batman” film starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader is not even expected until 2027, and even that release date is completely speculative with Warner Brothers (owners of the DC Comics brand) not wanting to spend money on comic book properties as of late.
Another factor driving the trend away from comic books is the average age of the collector. Younger collectors under 40 are just not as interested in comic books as a collectible like older generations are. Newer comic books are barely selling to younger readers and the comic book market by-and-large is in a state of constant flux. Recently, it was announced that one of the largest comic book distributors, Diamond Comic Distributors, has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Just a few short years ago this would have been thought to not be possible. Yet, here we are. There is, however, some bright news on the horizon for comic book collectors and investors alike.
Neal Adams’ “Batman” and “Detective Comics” from the 1970s show signs of life, as do bronze-age horror comics. Golden-age comic books are still selling across the board. The slump appears to be centered on key superhero comic books from the silver and bronzeage era that have seen massive price jumps. Make no mistake, true believers, comic books will eventually come back en vogue, but collectors should not expect the massive price gains we had in the last 10 years to continue into the future. Smart money is entering the market and prices will eventually stabilize. For now, just hang on and hold on tight as this is one bumpy ride.
If vintage comic books were one of the worst performing markets in 2024, the absolute worst performing market of them all was the market for graded factory sealed vintage video games. It should be stated that used vintage video games are hot, but their graded and factory sealed counterparts took a further deep dive in 2024 that is causing most collectors in this market to take notice. Unfortunately, as I have written about before, the run up in graded factory sealed video games was anything but organic (ahem, the market was likely artificially manipulated and there is a lawsuit currently pending as a result), but when a market craters anywhere from 40 percent or more, speculators and collectors alike are going to be running for the proverbial hills. And while it is true that vintage video games do have organic collectability, some of these overextended speculators are now learning the awful truth, that if someone just wants to own a copy of “Super Mario Bros.” for their original Nintendo Entertainment System, they don’t have to own it in factory sealed and graded condition. Graded factory sealed video games were always a niche collectible for this very reason.
video game collectors who disagree with this assessment, you may want to study what happened during the graded coin bubble of the late 1980s. It took decades for the market to recover, and lawsuits were filed eroding trust in the rare coin marketplace. It was only in the 2000s with the advent of CAC (Certified Acceptance Corporation) that caused the market to regain collectors’ confidence again. And coins are a mature and sophisticated market. Video games are entirely new and speculative. Please understand the difference.
Please know that I take no satisfaction in writing articles about the worst performing collecting markets. My goal is to simply report the truth. Unfortunately, in today’s collecting world, certain collecting markets are being portrayed as can’t lose investing markets. This is far from the truth, as speculating in any kind of antique and collectible is not without risk. It is my sincere hope in reporting on these worst performing markets of 2024 that readers at least acknowledge this fact. But please know that it is not all gloom and doom, as it is quite possible the market for these collectibles can turn at any time, and today’s worst performing markets can easily become tomorrow’s best performing markets! Thanks for reading.
Shawn Surmick has been an avid collector since the age of 12. He currently resides in his hometown of Boyertown, Pa., and is a passionate collector of antiques and collectibles. His articles focus on various topics affecting the marketplace.
Unfortunately, right before the pandemic with the advent of WATA Games as the new premier third-party grading company, collectors flocked to the newest third party graded collectible that was being promoted by auction companies and industry insiders alike. Logic went out the proverbial window, and so did any rational prices. Finally, much like most speculative markets, demand fizzled and enthusiasts were left with entombed games that were now worth a lot less than their frenzied high prices. I am sorry to inform you, but you will never ever see a copy of “Super Mario 64,” released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996, and graded by any grading company in 9.8 condition, selling for over a million dollars ever again. That train has left the station and, unfortunately, so has a lot of trust in this market. Note to
American Folk Art Museum Promotes Emelie Gevalt
Appointment Follows Successful Exhibitions Advancing American Folk Art And Culture
The American Folk Art Museum recently announced that Dr. Emelie Gevalt, the museum’s curatorial chair for collections and curator of folk art, has been promoted to deputy director and chief curatorial and program officer. In her expanded role, Gevalt will oversee all aspects of the museum’s exhibition programs, art collections, and learning and engagement activities, including continuing to curate exhibitions, author scholarship, and maintain and expand the museum-holdings through strategic acquisitions and major gifts.
Jason T. Busch, Becky and Bob Alexander Director and CEO of the American Folk Art Museum, commented on the promotion: “In the six years since I joined the museum, our exhibitions have achieved new heights in ambition, scale, and academic rigor, which is due in no small part to Emelie’s curatorial vision and collaborative spirit. Emelie has quickly earned recognition within the field as one of the leading American art curators of her generation, whose fresh perspective on folk art
and American history continues to advance new interpretations and perceptions in the 21st century. She has also been a tremendous partner in expanding the museum’s network to new and prospective patrons, including playing a pivotal role in significant financial gifts and acquisitions that have greatly enhanced our collection.”
“I am delighted to expand the scope of my responsibilities as a curator at the museum. Under Jason’s leadership, AFAM has embraced and fostered a culture that seeks a more expansive understanding of folk and self-taught art, allowing the museum to tell new stories through our exhibitions and engage with the public to rethink their understanding of art history. I am excited to collaborate more closely with all of my colleagues at AFAM, including our exceptional curatorial, collections, and learning and engagement teams, to further advance this mission going forward,” remarked Gevalt.
Gevalt is also responsible for the museum’s accessioning of major new works that have greatly expanded the scope of the collection. Among them are Ammi Phillips’ celebrated “Portrait of Frederick A. Gale,” which joins the museum’s extensive holdings of the artist’s work, including the famed “Girl in a Red Dress with Cat and Dog” and the first works to enter the museum’s collection by the itinerant artist John Brewster Jr. (1766-1854), as well as significant acquisitions to the museum’s quilt collection, including several examples by 20th-century
African American makers (for instance, a denim “Housetop” quilt by Gee’s Bend quilter Lucy Mingo) and by other living artists, such as Tomie Nagano, and a rare sampler featuring a Black figure, which was featured in “Unnamed Figures.”
These acquisitions, among others, were completed as part of a comprehensive and strategic review of the collection recently conducted by Gevalt and Dr. Valérie Rousseau, AFAM’s Curatorial Chair and Senior Curator of 20th-Century & Contemporary Art, to guide the museum’s future acquisitions.

“Cecily Brown: Themes And Variations”
First Of Its Kind Exhibit In U.S. To Open At The Barnes Foundation
This spring 2025, the Barnes Foundation will present the East Coast premiere of “Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations” a major mid-career retrospective of pioneering British painter Cecily Brown. Co-organized by the Barnes and the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), this exhibition is the largest presentation of Brown’s work in the U.S. to date and her first solo exhibition in Philadelphia. Co-curated by Simonetta Fraquelli, independent art historian and consultant curator for the Barnes, and Anna Katherine Brodbeck, the Hoffman Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the DMA, the exhibition spans three decades of Brown’s career, showcasing her subversive reconfiguration of art history and contemporary culture. This exhibition will be on view in the Roberts Gallery from Sunday, March 9, through Sunday, May 25.
It will be the first exhibit to fully explore Cecily Brown’s work through the lens of its groundbreaking reconfiguration of cultural politics. Bringing together more than 30 large-scale paintings and works on paper that highlight Brown’s subversion of gendered tropes in art history and popular culture, the exhibition sheds light on
inches, from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, a gift of the Collectors Committee, 2015.62.1, image courtesy Cecily Brown.
her practice. The exhibition reveals how she reclaimed expression through gestures associated with an earlier generation of male artists, a style largely out of favor with her peers, to create dynamic, and creative paintings, and moving between figuration and abstraction. Featuring paintings and works on paper from prominent institutional and private
collections, “Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations” is organized around scenes and motifs prevalent throughout visual culture, including the boudoir, the garden, the hunt, and the shipwreck. Brown’s references range from centuries-old European paintings to contemporary pop songs. She subverts her sources’ messages and the natural world, complicating
the gendered stereotypes of traditional genres. Brown continually reexamines art history with contemporary issues in mind while revisiting her own works to generate new compositions.
The Barnes Foundation is located at 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.

John Singleton Copley Portrait Brings $500,000
By Karl Pass
A fine John Singleton Copley (Massachusetts/ United Kingdom, 1738-1815) oil on canvas portrait, ca. 1756-58, depicting a young Priscilla Greenleaf of Boston, portrayed with flowers in her hair and holding a small dog, achieved $500,000 at Pook & Pook on Jan. 10. It took 44 bids to get there, including four phone lines, until a private collector prevailed.
Measuring 26 7/8-by-22 7/8 inches (in period frame), Copley painted the three children of Dr. John and Priscilla Brown Greenleaf several years after they died. Each portrait was based on earlier works painted by Joseph Badger of the two daughters. Together with the portrait of their brother, the group ranks among the most noteworthy of Copley’s early work. The portrait of Priscilla’s mother, Priscilla Brown Greenleaf, by John Greenwood, is in the Bayou Bend collection; the portraits of Priscilla’s
siblings, John and Elizabeth Greenleaf, by John Singleton Copley, are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The portrait was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1972-74. It descended in the Appleton-Greenleaf family, and further ownership history includes Mrs. E. M. LeBaron, Modesto, Calif., until 1979; Hirschl & Adler Galleries, 197980; Richard Manoogian, Detroit, Mich., 1980-82; Hirschl & Adler Galleries, 1982-89; Mr. Nusrala, St. Louis, Mo., 19891997; Private Collection, The Herdeg Estate, 1997-present.
The Joseph Badger portrait of Priscilla, upon which this work is based sold one lot earlier in the auction for $20,000. The Pook & Pook twoday sale grossed $3,167,286 (including buyer’s premium) and had 1,907 registered bidders through Bidsquare, PookLive, phone, absentee, and live in salesroom. New Show Slated For Feb. 8 In Phoenixville, Pa.
By Karl Pass
A new antiques show will take place Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Kimberton Fairgrounds in Phoenixville, Pa. The Winter’s Garden Antique Show will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show’s promoter, Cecilia Taylor, wanted to use this venue with a winter time show. “People are anticipating Spring and have
a bit of cabin fever. Although not a garden material specific show, I know I’m thinking of my garden when it’s asleep in the winter and dreaming of Spring,” remarked Taylor. The promoter has gathered a diverse group of dealers to showcase their wares and share in some camaraderie. “I love the dealers who work hard and hustle. I want
both exhibiting dealers and customers to be happy and have a good time. There are still great shows out there. This one will fall the week before the major Nashville (Tennessee) shows that are a staple. I hope my show can piggyback off of that energy. This being a brand new show is scary but also exciting. You have to take risks sometimes
and push outside your comfort zone. I’m trying to do that and provide a new experience for everyone involved,” continued Taylor.
The address for the Kimberton Fairgrounds is 762 Pike Springs Road in Phoenixville, Pa.

Tarbell was born into a ranching family and grew up in the Dakotas and Wyoming, where he attended the University of Wyoming. As a young child, Scott had a fascination and interest in Western heritage. Little did he realize this would become not only his life’s passion but also his career path. While in his early teens, he worked for several dealers who specialized in horses, horse-drawn equipment, and antique cowboy and Indian collectibles. Since the early 1980s, he has worked for major Western auction companies. As a result, he has refined and focused his business model for New Frontier to specialize in pre-1900 Western artifacts, as well as Colt and Winchester firearms. Keeping the industry in the public eye and maintaining the love and respect for our Western history alive through its artifacts has become Tarbell’s mission. Metropolitan Museum Of Art Launches New Blockchain Game
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has launched a new short-session game, “Art Links,” that invites players to identify common threads and intriguing connections between works of art from The Met collection. This is the first Web3-based experience (a game that is built using blockchain technology) at The Met. Designed in partnership with the art and tech platform TRLab, this mobile-first, browser-based, blockchain-powered game presents an innovative way to engage with the museum and offers the opportunity to collect special in-game NFT badges and win exciting in-person and digital rewards. “Art Links” is available on The Met’s website at artlinks. metmuseum.org. “The serialized game, which releases new challenges weekly, features over 140 works of art from across The Met collection. Upon successfully finding art-based connections, or “chains” between works, players can claim free NFT “badges” and earn “achievements” by tackling in-game challenges. Since the launch on Jan. 23, new challenges are released on Thursdays at 12:01 a.m. EST for 12 weeks. Players who earn achievements are entered to win exciting perks and rewards, such as museum exhibition catalogues, discounts at The Met Store, and private, curator-led tours. “This groundbreaking online game is an exciting first for The Met and a singular experience in the museum field at large,” said Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer. “By bringing works of art from collections across the museum, from Modern and Contemporary Art to Asian to Egyptian Art, players can broaden their engagement and understanding of culture and creativity in a fun and compelling way. “Art Links” truly exemplifies how The Met continues to connect audiences to ideas and to one another while exploring emerging technology.” “The works of art featured in the game were selected by
Destinee Filmore, assistant curator in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, and a cross-disciplinary team from across The Met’s vast collection. Each chain includes at least one work from The Met’s collection of 20thand 21st-century art, placing these works in a broader creative context. “The game features four types of connections: “Highlights,” showcasing key works, artists, or movements; “Material,” focusing on how works are made; “Emojis,” highlighting signs, symbols, and visual culture; and “Web3,” showing how artists across time have engaged with core concepts underpinning the blockchain, such as randomization, security, and ledgers. “Themes that players will discover during the 12 weeks include: “Objects in Disguise,” artworks made from surprising and sometimes deliberately deceptive materials, such as Paper Med No.18 by Su Xianzhong; “Art x Tech,” with works that touch on artists’ dialogue with technological innovation across time, including Matthew Jensen’s “The 49 States”; and “Harlem as Muse,” featuring artists who looked to Harlem as a subject and source of inspiration, including Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, and Jacob Lawrence. “Audrey Ou, co-founder and CEO of TRLab, said, “As a company at the forefront of art and technology, we’re committed to creating new ways for audiences to discover, engage, and immerse themselves in art and culture. Partnering with The Met on its first Web3 experience reflects our belief that deepening connections between creators, collectors, and fans is the future of art. We’re combining digital innovation with artistic expression to create truly transformative experiences.” “In each game, players create a chain that consists of seven artworks and six connections. The connections can be words, emojis, or artworks. The chain is completed in three rounds,
