Foltz Redware Nativity Scene Sells For $880

CAS Collectors is the club for all those with an interest in the work of the Ceramic Arts Studio. The group has announced the 2022 CAS Collectors Convention will take place Saturday, Aug. 27, in Madison, Wis. The theme, “Seasons of CAS!,” celebrates the ageless appeal of Ceramic Arts figurines, an appreciation that has spanned the seasons since the studio first opened its doors in 1940. CAS charmers brightened homes from coast to coast during the 1940s and ’50s, brighten hearts today, and will continue to brighten collectors’ hearts for decades to come. From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., convention attendees will take in the Wisconsin Pottery Association Show and Sale at the Alliant Energy Center. Later, all will gather at a new locale, the Madison Comfort Inn and Suites, for the convention festivities. Activities and décor will pay tribute to the studio’s illustrious heritage. There will be party favors and take-home souvenirs, door prizes, colorful centerpieces, in short, everything that makes such a gathering so unforgettable. Getting the evening underway will be a social hour and the popular CAS on Display Contest. All in attendance are invited to submit entries. A dinner, raffle, and membership meeting will be followed by the club’s annual auction. Events will conclude with door prizes and presentation of the 2022 CAS

Witman Auctioneers Inc., of Manheim, Pa, held an on-site auction for Ned and the late Gwen Foltz at Foltz’s studio located in rural northern Lancaster County at 225 North Peartown Road in Reinholds on May 14. Foltz, a redware potter and former schoolteacher, is among the most talented potters of his generation. Working in the Pennsylvania German tradition, he is known especially for his figural work, which places him in a class above. Luke and Clarke Witman have had over a dozen sales for Foltz over the years in a downsizing effort. Ned and his late wife, Gwen, collected contemporary folk art. The following were

prices realized, which include a 10-percent buyer’s premium. A finely done redware airplane hand-modeled by Foltz as a special piece to be sold at the sale brought $2,200. A Foltz redware nativity set scene sold for $880; a Foltz turkey Continued on page 7
