The Yellow Garage Antiques Center, in collaboration with the Harrison Township Historical Society, is proud to present the Annual Fall Festival of Antiques at the 4-H Fairgrounds in Mullica Hill, N.J., on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will feature quality antiques dealers from throughout the Northeast set up in an outdoor setting, under pavilion cover, and on the lawn at the The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) in Paoli, Pa., is pleased to announce the opening of “Home as Stage,” on view from Sept. 15 to Dec. 30, the final exhibition in a series of three installations exploring ideas of “home” in celebrations of the museum’s 50th anniversary. Featuring the work of four Philadelphia-based contemporary artists, Emily Carris-Duncan, Kay Healy, Colin Pezzano, and Stacey Lee Webber, complemented by a selection of textile objects on loan to WEM from The Fabric Workshop and Museum, “Home as Stage” asks Show promotor Connie Gleed will hold an outdoor country show, titled Gathering on the Farm, in Gettysburg, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 1. There will be 16 dealers set up under tents, plus a barn. The owner’s shop will also be open in two log cabins on the property. The show will be held at 1042 Bullfrog Road, Fairfield, Pa., from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Admission is free of charge. This is a rain-or-shine event. The farm is a 10-minute drive from downtown Gettysburg. A sheriff sale purchase 40 years ago, the farm is the home of Linda and Joe Bowden. It was love at first sight. The log portion of the house dates to 1740, and the stone, to 1830. In 1930, an addition was added to the stone portion. The Trader’s Cabin behind the house dates to 1720. From the 1730s into the 1740s, it was a dwelling for Swedish explorer Hans Steelman, an Indian trader and interpreter. After the Battle of Gettysburg and prior to Confederate troops moving South, diaries tell stories of temporary bivouacs/camps set up on the farm. The Bowdens raised sheep on the land, and the house and barn are registered by Historic Gettysburg as historic structures. The Trader’s Cabin remains among the earliest structures in the area. In the last 10 years, Bowden restored the original bake oven at the rear of the kitchen. The main cabin was built by Bowden and houses their antiques shop. A living history group in period attire will attend the show, and four $50 cash door prizes will be given out to show goers. Food will be available.Formore information on this country and primitive antiques show, call Connie Gleed at 717-919-4206 during business hours.

I coast around eBay frequently to look at various topic areas that I collect. It gives me a chance to see how the market is doing and to take the temperature of collectors at various levels. Regular readers know that I have preached that historic photography is among a great unknown opportunity for collectors.Iwillfreely admit that in saying this I open myself up for criticism insofar as there are certainly some areas of historic photography that are collected heavily and bring a strong price. For example, I love cartes-de-visite of Civil War soldiers. These small photos were taken often when soldiers enlisted, were bored in camp, got a promotion, etc. They are wonderful to collect, but, man oh day, I have been priced out of that market. I left bids recently on 20 different eBay photo auctions of Civil War cdvs. How many did I get? None! Now, I am not totally a bottom feeder here, but there must be a pool of collectors out there who are sniping on these items and driving the prices way up. I remember in recent times not paying more than $50 for a nice cdv. Today, you would be hard pressed to find an example in that range. It is a market that is hotter thanThatever.said, I also enjoy images of grand Victorian hotels and houses, you know, the big, overblown, spectacular examples that dotted the landscape in the late 19th century. These come on the market with some frequency, mostly because they were, and still are, such icons of the landscape. If the house or hotel is known and there are local collectors, then the price is strong. If the property is not easily identifiable, then the photo is practically a give-away.Finally, I am always surprised how collectors will gravitate toward big names but miss fine works by lesser or unknown photographers. I have seen and purchased wonderful photographs that are well composed and taken by unknown artists for very little money. Like paintings, collectors want that signature rather than trusting their own eye to discern a good work from a bad one. This leads to interesting challenges, as we have all seen works by major artists and photographers that aren’t great. Therefore, what you are then paying for is a signature like any other autograph rather than a quality piece of art. I really do encourage collectors to seek out photography. It can support your other collecting habits (photographs of toys being used by children are great to have with the actual toy). I love historic trades and so am always looking for images of tools being used by craftsmen. So take some time to carefully go through that box lot of photographs at the next auction you attend. Or spend some time on eBay or in dealers’ shops looking for those cool historic photographs. In addition, don’t forget about Real-Photo Postcards (RPPC) as they are another extension of collecting historic photographs.“Bornto collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Three Major Institutions Collaborate To Present First Major Exhibition Devoted To Matisse In The 1930s
“Because this transformative decade in Matisse’s career has never been treated in a stand-alone exhibition before, visitors will have a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the very process through which Matisse generated a new creative approach and outlook in the later part of his career, while also witnessing the dramatically revitalized production that followed from his eventful visit to Philadelphia in 1930. Only through such an institutional partnership can we so vividly tell this story, as each of our collaborating museums is uniquely and deeply connected to Matisse. Between works on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and complementary holdings down the street at the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia this fall will be an especially exciting city in which to experience Matisse’s extraordinary art,” stated“MatisseAffron.spent most of his life in Nice, and Mediterranean splendor permeates his work,” added Claudine Grammont. “He came back from the U.S. to France with a broadened vision of the world that had long-lasting effects, as the ’30s were rejuvenating for this pioneer of modernity. A new Matissian ‘map’ was drawn with the commission of a mural for the Barnes Foundation: it was consequently between Philadelphia and Nice that the main axis for these decisive years runs. The Musée Matisse in Nice, whose collection is rich in art linked to this period of creation, is particularly happy to collaborate with the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Musée de l’Orangerie to demonstrate the powerful renewal in the artist’s work during this key period.”“‘The Dance’ (1931–33), Matisse’s decoration for the Barnes Foundation, is closely linked to the artist’s return to a modernist style in the 1930s. These years, when Matisse was inspired by his trips to the United States, promoted in Paris by the journal Cahiers d’art, faced off with Picasso at the Paul Rosenberg gallery while his radical pre–World War I paintings were seen at Paul Guillaume’s, assisted the organization of different retrospective exhibitions, and worked on his art in Nice, made history as the crucible of a fascinating modernist transformation,” stated Cécile Debray.“Our three museums in Philadelphia, Paris, and Nice offer a special, much-anticipated opportunity for a new and unparalleled exhibition about this decade. Above all, the collaboration marks a friendship. I would like to salute Claudine Grammont and Matthew Affron, my friends and colleagues,” concluded“MatisseDebray.in the 1930s” will assemble a rich array of works from public and private collections in the United States and Europe. It will explore the remarkable changes in style that followed as Matisse discovered different ways of working across the mediums of easel and decorative painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, and the illustrated book. The exhibition will demonstrate that what he achieved during the 1930s represented nothing less than a total revitalization of his artistic worldioustilestingsoffocusodMatisse’sOdalisquescalledchronologically,Theovision.OrganizationftheExhibitionnarrativeisorganizedwithapreludeInteriorsandthatlooksatso-calledNiceperi-of1917–30.Thissectionwillontheartist’sdepictionstudiomodels,ofteninset-filledwithdecorativetex-andotheritemsfromvar-regionsoftheIslamicthatMatissevisited;it

Philadelphia Museum Of Art To Host Beginning Oct. 20
The Philadelphia Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and the Musée Matisse Nice, will present the first exhibition ever dedicated to the pivotal decade of the 1930s in the art of Henri Matisse (1869–1954), one of the giants of 20th-century art. Opening first in Philadelphia, the only United States venue, the exhibition, “Matisse in the 1930s,” will present more than 100 works, ranging from both renowned and rarely seen paintings and sculptures, to drawings and prints, to illustrated books. It will also feature documentary photographs and films. The exhibition will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated scholarlyMatthewcatalogue.Affron, Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Cécile Debray, president of the Musée National Picasso-Paris; and Claudine Grammont, director of the Musée Matisse Nice, comprise the curatorial team.

The Bill Miller collection will be sold at two venues. On Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26 and 27, at 10 a.m. each day, Miller plans to offer thousands of items, parts, merchandise, collectibles, and more as the first half of his collection sale. These items include literature, car parts, signage, showroom banners from his dealership days, bikes, toys, a snowmobile (with snowmobile trailer), shirts, fairgrounds collectibles, pictures, posters, and some autographed items. Along with the two-day merchandise sale, Miller will also move 20 classic and collector cars across the auction block on Thursday, Sept. 29, at approximately 3 p.m. These lots span from the 1930s to the 2000s and are low milage and, in some cases, one-owner cars. Miller has identified a pair of Kaiser Darrens for the Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction; two 1981 VW trucks, including one that’s never been titled; and a 1958 Cadillac two-door hard top with 12,000 original miles and original tires. Also heading to auction is his 1936 Ford pickup, one that many Carlisle guests have seen him drive at the Carlisle Ford Nationals; a 1972 VW Bug convertible; a 1938 Chrysler Royal Convertible; a 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS with 11,000 miles; a 1953 Kaiser Manhattan Sedan with 20,000 original miles; a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible with 27,000 original miles; a 1985 Chevrolet El Camino with 60,000 original miles; and a 1987 Chevrolet El Camino with 8,000 original miles.“I have been collecting cars, parts, and memorabilia all my life,” said Miller. “It is time to part with my collection so many other hobbyists can enjoy these treasures just as I have. I have owned some cars more than 50 years, so here is an opportunity to own some great original automobiles,” continued Miller. “I have been a purist for collecting original cars as they are only original once. I just love how the factories built them with precision andTheaccuracy.”two-day merchandise sale will take place in and around the former Smith’s Appliance Building, located at 1188 Spring Road in Carlisle, across the street from the Fairgrounds Diner and Desperate Times Brewery. The car collection will be positioned for preview and sale at the Carlisle Expo Center, located at 100 K. Street. While each sale is part of the Bill Miller collection, they will be managed separately. Merchandise will be sold through a third-party auctioneer, while the cars will be managed by Carlisle Auctions. The merchandise will be auctioned at no reserve, and there will be no fees associated with bidding or buying.
Also Included Will Be An Early Acetate Recording Of “Blue Suede Shoes”
Items to be sold pertaining to Elvis Presley’s early career at Sun Records include two acetate records and a photo signed by the “Million Dollar Quartet” Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. It is inscribed to Sun Records employee Marion Keisker MacInnes.
Bill Miller Jr. co-founded Carlisle Events in 1974. While his name has been attached to America’s Automotive Hometown of Carlisle, Pa., for nearly 50 years, his passion for all things automotive goes back to his early years as an enthusiast. As one can imagine, someone as passionate as Bill has amassed quite the collection of automotive items, and as part of this year’s Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction, select pieces of that collection will be sold.
Rock ‘n’ roll history will hit the auction block on Thursday, Sept. 29, when three early items pertaining to Elvis Presley, including one of three original master recordings from his firstever recording session in 1954 for Sun Records, will be offered by Weiss Auctions. Music will be a key part of the 500-lot, online-only Iconic and Eclectic Auction. The acetate recording, with “That’s All Right” on one side and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” on the other side, is considered one of rock’s true Holy Grail items, as it was the record that launched Elvis’s career and changed American popular music forever. John Lennon once said, “Before Elvis there was nothing.” Three acetates were cut in that first session; one of the three will come up for bid. Also sold will be an acetate recording of “Blue Suede Shoes,” also with Elvis on vocals. The song would become a huge hit in 1955 for Carl Perkins, before Presley recorded his own version the following year. Both records were charttoppers. Elvis ordered an actual pair of blue suede shoes and wore them when he performed the song. The shoes were sold at auction in 2013 for $80,000.

This is then Private Elvis Presley, in 1960, at a press conference in Germany, saying hello to Marion Keisker MacInnes, an Air Force Captain who, earlier at Sun Records, helped Elvis launch his career.
Meanwhile, industry standard Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction Announces Bill Miller Collection Three Days Of Selling To Be Held At Two Carlisle Venues On Sept. 26, 27, And 29 Continued on page 10
The third item is a large version of the famous photo showing the four members of the “Million Dollar Quartet” consisting of Presley, Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, signed and inscribed by all four to Marion Keisker MacInnes, who worked at Sun Records and was a key contributor to Elvis’s early development. The photograph was taken at the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tenn. Additional items from Ms. Kesiker MacInnes’s collection of Sun Records memorabilia will also be in the sale, as will other music industry items, including a Beatles autographed picture, signed by all four band members; a ticket from the Beatles performance at RFK Stadium in August 1966; and an archive of material relating to Barbra Streisand, including letters, postcards and records. “That’s All Right” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky” weren’t the very first songs recorded by Presley at Sun Records. On July 18, 1953, the then 18-year-old strolled into the studio on his lunch hour and plunked down four dollars to create an acetate record as a belated birthday present for his mother, Gladys. Marion Keisker MacInnes met him at the door. As for the acetate recording Elvis made for his mother as a birthday present, the disc was put up for auction in 2015, at Graceland. Rock musician and Nashville recording studio owner Jack White paid $300,000 for it. Internet bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Phone and absentee bids will also be accepted.Tolearn more, call Philip Weiss at 516-594-0731 or visit www.WeissAuctions.com.
One Of Three Original Elvis Presley Master Recordings From 1954 To Be Sold On Sept. 29
In 1957, science fiction movie fans were treated to one of the all-time classics in the genre. The film’s self-explanatory title said it all, “The Incredible Shrinking Man.” It was the fantastic tale of one Robert Scott Carey, the hapless title character who finds himself shrinking into oblivion following a freak encounter at sea with a strange mist. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” is more than a science fiction classic. The film also represents one of the most collectible sci-fi entries of the FabulousBasedFifties.onthe novel “The Shrinking Man” (1956) by Richard Matheson, “The Incredible Shrinking Man” was produced by Albert Zugsmith for Island“Rhubarb”lytrainerlegendarytabbyOrangey,OrangeyNurse,Bramson,WilliamRaymondLangtonKentCarey.andWilliamsAlCarterBlackSpace,”ArnolddirectingRichardwith(hisPictures.Universal-InternationalWritingthescreenplayfirst)wasMathesonhimself,uncreditedassistancefromAlanSimmons.AblytheactionwasJack(“ItCameFromOuter“TheCreatureFromtheLagoon”)withEllisW.ascinematographerandJosephasfilmeditor.HeadingthecastwereGrantasRobertScottCareyRandyStuartasLouiseAlsoonboardwereAprilasClariceBruce,PaulasCharlieCarey,BaileyasDr.Silver,SchallertasDr.DianaDarrinasBillyCurtisasMidgetandasButchtheCat.amalemarmaladeownedandtrainedbycinematicanimalFrankInn,hadprevious-appearedinthefilms(1951)and“ThisEarth”(1955).

Budgeted at $750,000, “The Incredible Shrinking Man” began production on May 31, 1956. As might be expected, the movie’s special effects accounted for the lion’s share of the budget, which included large props (matchbook, table, mousetrap, sewing needle, thimble, et al.) and the construction of an oversized dollhouse at Universal Pictures’ Stage 28. In order to protect the secrecy of the special photography used in the film, Universal adopted a closeddoor policy on the set, further creating an aura of mystery for potentialFilmingfilmgoers.“The Incredible Shrinking Man” proved to be a grueling challenge for lead actor Grant Williams, who was injured multiple times while climbing sets and the like. His injuries included scratches, blisters and an eye condition, which merited medical attention at the studio hospital. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” opens at sea, where Scott Carey and his wife, Louise, are vacationing on their boat. While Louise is down in the cabin, a strange mist moves in, enveloping Scott topside. After returning home, Scott notices that his clothes are now too large. Alarmed by this development, Scott visits his doctor, whose Xrays later reveal that Scott, who suspected as much, is actually shrinking. A referral to a medical institute determines that a combination of the strange radioactive mist and exposure to lawn pesticides has altered his molecular structure, resulting in his shrinking. Scott Carey soon becomes the subject of intense media attention, forcing him to stay inside his home. An antidote is discovered, arresting Scott’s height at three feet, but it proves to be only temporary, as he continues to shrink following a relationship with a circus dwarf named Clarice. Now living in a dollhouse, Scott is attacked one day by the family cat while Louise is out running an errand. Taking refuge in the basement, Scott encounters many other dangers, including a burst water heater and later a marauding spider, the latter of which Scott manages to kill with a large sewing needle. Assuming that Butch killed Scott after finding a bloody piece of clothing, Louise and Scott’s brother, Charlie, investigate the broken water heater in the basement, unable to hear Scott’s pleas for help as he has now become so tiny as to be inaudible. Scott later escapes his basement dungeon, slipping through a tiny square in a window screen and contemplating his fate as he continues to shrink to sub-atomic stature while staring at the massive, starlit universe above. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” premiered in New York City on Feb. 22, 1957. More than one month later, the movie made its Los Angeles debut on March 27, 1957. In late April of that year, the film went into general release in the United States.“The Incredible Shrinking Man” proved to be one of the most successful science fiction pictures of the 1950s, grossing $1.43 million by the end of 1957. In 1964, “The Incredible Shrinking Man” returned to movie theaters, where it eventually attained a kind of cult following among sci-fi fans. “The Incredible Shrinking Man” produced a plethora of “incredible” memorabilia for today’s collectors. Leading the way is the workhorse of movie promotional material, the standard 27-by-41-inch one sheet poster featuring superb artwork by Reynold Brown. Pictured is a disheveled Grant Williams, armed with a sewing needle, fending off the family cat. One example in folded very finecondition brought a top bid of $776.75 at auction. For sheer eye appeal and collectibility, one can’t beat the movie’s eight-card lobby set, which features various scenes from the picture: Grant Williams setting the mousetrap, the menacing spider in the basement, Williams hiding behind a big ball of yarn, Butch the cat stalking his small human prey, Williams and Randy Stuart aboard their boat, et al. One set in fine-very fine condition sold for $896.25 at auction. And speaking of cards, the film’s window card (14-by-22 inches) is another stunner. These cards were displayed in cafes, shoe stores, barber shops and other businesses around town in order to promote the movie. One restored example for the Melrose Theatre (there were more than a few theaters around the country bearing that name back in the day, including ones in Nashville, Tenn.; Melrose, Mass.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Pittsburgh, Pa.) in very fine- condition hit a top bid of $776.75 at auction. The movie’s insert poster (14-by-36 inches) is another popular item with collectors, featuring different artwork from the one sheet poster. Butch the cat is once again front and center extending a fearsome paw at his former master. One example in rolled very finecondition brought $424.23 at auction. The film’s half sheet style B poster (22-by-28 inches) is another gem in the field. One example in rolled fine condition sold for $430.20 at auction. Foreign movie posters can also be quite attractive. The Australian Daybill poster (13by-30 inches), featuring the blurb at top, “A Motion Picture So Incredible You Will Talk About It For Years To Come!,”
This window card sold for $776.75.

visitors to consider Esherick’s home and studio not only as the set on which the artist’s ambitions played out, but also as a stage that hosted players, often other artists, whose conversation, collaboration, and connection made Esherick’s life that much richer and more profound.Tohonor that legacy and create new opportunities, WEM invited Carris-Duncan, Healy, Pezzano, and Webber to spend time in the studio, which is the centerpiece of the museum and a National Historic Landmark for Architecture, and with its archives, developing connections with aspects of Esherick’s life, the players in his story, and the physical nature of the site. The works created and selected for the exhibition are on display in Esherick’s iconic space, existing as both material demonstrations of that connection across time as well as discreet works of art imbued with each artist’s distinctive voice and vision.“Home as Stage” is an onsite exhibition with artworks on display in Esherick’s studio. Henri Matisse’s “Woman in Blue,” 1937, 36 1/2-by-29 inches (92.7-by-73.7 cm), oil-oncanvas, is from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, gift of Mrs. John Wintersteen, 1956-23-1, courtesy 2022 Succession H. Matisse/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.
highlight two complete sets of Themes and Variations drawings, together with a small selection of contemporaneous paintings on the same subjects as Matisse’s summation of what he had accomplished in the previous ten years. With their serial and open-ended approach, as in Theme P, which depicts a woman in a pleated dress in a variety of poses, the Themes and Variations confirmed that, as the 1930s turned to the 1940s, Matisse’s notion of creative process prioritized the flux of fleeting perceptions and emotions over the fully finished, definitive statement.Theexhibit will be on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from Oct. 20 to Jan. 29, 2023. The museum is located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 26th Street. For general information, call 215-763-8100.
