An extremely rare miniature portrait of Kinheche, a Chickasaw dignitary, was recently acquired by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The painting is exceptional not only because early portraits of American Indians are scarce but because this example is of a named sitter and not merely a generalized likeness. It is also remarkable because it was painted by a female artist, Caroline Dudley (1802-32).
“We work diligently to ensure that the foundation’s portrait collection represents the full range of early American society, but images of known American Indians from this early date are extremely rare,” said Ronald L. Hurst, senior vice president for education and historic resources and chief curator. “The portrait of Kinheche provides a compelling human face that will be an invaluable aid in telling the stories of Indigenous peoples during the early 19th century.”
This small likeness, which measures approximately 2.75 inches high by 2.25 inches wide and is a watercolor painted on ivory, was made by Dudley in Franklin, Tenn., in August 1830, when she was 28 years old. She and her father, Guilford Dudley, were among the spectators invited to witness the treaty summit between President Andrew Jackson and the Chickasaw Nation. A relative of Caroline’s mother had served as President

the time she completed the painting, she was likely a teacher at either the Young Ladies Boarding School run by her mother, Anna Bland Eaton Dudley, in Williamson County, Tenn., or at Mrs. Long’s School in Franklin, which was run by her sister, Judith. Caroline died just two years after this painting was completed, and the piece descended through the family until 2004.
“Colonial Williamsburg has a rich collection of works by school girls ranging from needlework to paintings on velvet. The portrait of Kinheche adds to our understanding of the various kinds of artwork being offered to young women in female academies,” said Kate Teiken Rogers, assistant curator of paintings, drawings and sculpture.
To understand the historical context of the miniature portrait, one must first look to the War of 1812, during which the Muscogee Creeks had allied with the British and wanted to limit American expansion in the Southeast. When the Muscogee attacked American settlers at Fort Mims, near Lake Tensaw, Ala., in August 1813, what became known as the Creek War began. The Chickasaw Nation joined U.S. troops and militia in suppressing the Muscogee toward the end of the war in late 1813. William McIntosh, also known as Tustunnuggee Hutke (White Warrior), was a prominent Creek
The wonder of the holiday season has kicked off at the Brandywine Museum of Art with the return of the Brandywine Railroad. Celebrating 50 years of operation this year, the iconic Ogauge model train display has been a cherished holiday tradition for generations of museum visitors.
On view through Jan. 8, 2023, the Brandywine Railroad features trains running on 2,000 feet of track and includes more than 1,000 pieces, such as locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys that pass through a small village, a farm, factories, a drive-in movie theater and even a carnival. Additional features to look out for this year include several small “Easter eggs” hidden throughout the display for the observant visitor, such as miniature depictions of the Brandywine Conservancy’s Laurels Preserve and the grounds of the Radnor Hunt Races, as well as a new scenic backdrop that surrounds the entire gallery. A dazzling array of both toy and scale model trains can be seen chugging through the varied scenery, including those made by Lionel, Williams, Atlas, Mike’s Train House, K-line and others. Several interactive components are also integrated to allow for further visitor engagement.
In addition to the Brandywine Railroad, the museum’s special exhibition, “Fragile Earth: The Naturalist Impulse in Contemporary Art,” will also be on view through Jan. 8. Spanning two galleries of striking works created in a variety of media, “Fragile Earth” highlights the diverse

Adams
An Ansel Adams signed and framed Yosemite photo from around 1959 sold for $38,750 at a four-day Western Frontiers auction held Oct. 13 to 16 by Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC, online and live in the Reno, Nev. gallery. The 2,100-lot sale featured Native and general Americana, mining, Express, numismatics, art, bottles, stocks and more.
There were five lots of Ansel Adams framed photographic prints (and several images taken in the manner of Adams). A snow-covered tree at Yosemite, thought to be part of Adams’s late 1950s winter shots that led to his signed and numbered edition series, was the one which brought $38,750. It was the auction’s top lot.
Headlining was part three of the Gary Bracken collection. Rarities from the collection of the Ponca City, Okla., attorney featured Native Americana (baskets and pottery), Colorado and Oklahoma tokens, foreign coins, Colorado whiskey jugs, and saloon ephemera and billheads.
Internet bidding was provided by iCollector.com,
LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and Auctionzip.com. Phone and absentee bids were also accepted. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
Day one showcased Express and philatelic and general Americana, geographically sorted and including miscellaneous categories such as gaming, tobacciana and musical instruments. A Gibson model ES175 Sunburst electric guitar with a factory Bixbee whammy bar and a dark swirl pick guard was a true beauty and changed hands for $3,500.
Also bringing $3,500 was an original ledger containing the Laws for the Governing of the Virginia City (Nevada) Fire Department, ca. 1862-77, signed into law by the Nevada territorial governor, James W. Nye, in 1864. Also, a full-face Wells Fargo advertisement for Adler & Galinger Wholesale Dealers in General Merchandise (Treasure City, Nev.), addressed to James A. Read of San Jose, who was a member of the tragic Donner party, went for $2,375. A Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad lantern with the original lock and key and red
embossed Southern Pacific globe, 10 inches plus the handle and no patent info on the lamp, made $2,000.
Day two included political collectibles; militaria, firearms and weaponry; mining artifacts and ephemera; and stock certificates and bonds (with Colorado and Nevada mining, railroad and miscellaneous). A Colt Lightning model carbine rifle chambered for .44 caliber on a medium frame, having an 1887 birthdate and a 20-inch octagon barrel, hit $2,000.
A chunk of banded and dendritic gold and quartz pulled from the Sleeper main vein in Humboldt County, Nev., boasting a cross-sectional cut face exposing native gold (electrum), in the banded quartz sequence, realized $1,562. Also, a suite of seven different buttons, badges and ribbons from Teddy Roosevelt’s presidential campaign, including a Progressive Party button and a delegate ribbon from the Republican State Convention of 1904 in Billings, Mont., finished at $1,375. A rare stock certificate for the Upper San Miguel Gold & Silver Mining Company (with offices in Colorado and Michigan), certificate #389, issued for 500 shares to Henry Gerbs in May 1881, signed by company president A.T. Nichols and secretary John B.
Corliss, sold for $1,220.
Day three highlighted art, Wild West and law and order, cowboy and numismatics (to include coins, currency and scrip, medals and exonumia, and tokens). Six items relating to the Lincoln County (N.M.) War, an Old West conflict between rival factions that began in 1878 in the New Mexico Territory (prior to statehood) and continuing to 1881, famous because one of the participants was William H. Bonney (aka “Billy the Kid”), sold for $5,000.
A letter written and signed by the famous lawman Sheriff Seth Bullock, written on “Sheriff’s Office” letterhead and dated July 3, 1874, from Helena, Mont., addressed to Geo. Callaway (Virginia City, Mont.), with Bullock thanking Callaway, earned $3,250. Also, a typed 1908 Wild West Show contract signed by both William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) and Gordon W. Lillie (Pawnee Bill), plus Ruth L. Bailey (signed by someone else), all signatures clear, rose to $3,125.
A .9999 one ounce of fine gold 1914 $50 American Buffalo coin, in brilliant uncirculated condition, as new from the U.S. Mint, in a hard plastic case, designed to look like the Buffalo nickel, went to

Marketing Snafus Make Some Vintage “Star Wars” Toys Fun And Valuable Collectibles
(pun intended and, yes, the product is really that bad).
Make no mistake, the antiques and collectibles trade is full of failed products that have made great and highly valuable objects of desire. Don’t believe me?
By Shawn Surmick
If you have been alive long enough, you most likely have encountered several failed marketing snafus centered around some of your favorite products. Readers older than me may fondly remember the horrendous failure of the CocaCola company’s New Coke beverage released in 1985 that was supposed to replace the company’s signature formula. Within three months of the introduction of New Coke, the Coca-Cola company was busy apologizing to consumers and reassuring them that the trusted Coca-Cola Classic formula we all know and love (unless you are a Pepsi fan) was here to stay.
And speaking of Pepsi, my not-so-fond memories of high school would not be complete without trying the horrendous liquid concoction known as Crystal Pepsi.
Crystal Pepsi was Pepsi without the caramel color, and according to several marketing reports, it also had no “acidic flavor.” I have no idea what “acidic flavor” is supposed to mean in this context, but that’s probably why Crystal Pepsi isn’t sitting on store shelves today. Ironically, my college years would allow me the opportunity to try another failed Pepsi product. Pepsi Kona was released in the late 1990s and contained all the goodness of bubbly Pepsi combined with black coffee. I’ll spare you the details and save my review of that interestingly flat refreshment for another article, preferably one that talks about bitter bottles
Let’s focus solely on vintage “Star Wars” toys. Have you seen the current prices for a prototype rocket firing Boba Fett action figure? Back in the early 1980s, the latest “Star Wars” movie to premier was “The Empire Strikes Back,” and one of the most popular and deeply mysterious characters that would grace the film was a rogue bounty hunter by the name of Boba Fett, who fiercely pursued Han Solo for most of the movie. Kenner Toys, who had the rights to produce action figures based on the “Star Wars” franchise, originally wanted the toy to shoot an actual rocket projectile. Unfortunately, Mattel’s competing “BattleStar Galactica” toy line did feature shooting projectiles and, sadly, a known case of a child choking on the hard plastic missile. As such, Kenner decided to forgo the idea, and less than 100 rocket firing Boba Fett prototypes are known to exist in total.
Today, these action figures can fetch well over six figures or more on the open market, especially if they are graded and authenticated by a trusted third-party grading company.
And when it comes to vintage “Star Wars” toys, there were several other known marketing snafus that became rare and sought-after collectibles over the years. Originally, the three main characters that brandished light sabers were Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Obi Wan Kenobi.
The original release of these action figures featured double telescoping light sabers that extended from the character’s arm.
The double scoping piece was actually an added piece of plastic that made the light saber extend further in height. Depending on which
story you want to believe, either this design was nixed due to manufacturing costs, or it, much like the rocket firing Boba Fett figure, was also seen as a safety hazard. Today, any double telescoping figure in near-mint condition is going to set you back several thousand dollars. Prices go up from there depending on if the piece is graded and/or factory sealed.
Another coveted piece of vintage palm sized “Star Wars” goodness is known solely as the Blue Snaggletooth action figure, and to this very day, it is by far one of my favorite vintage “Star Wars” action figures. Back when Kenner Toys acquired the rights to produce toys based on the “Star Wars” universe, the movie had yet to premier. George Lucas also wanted to keep a lot of the plot and elements of the “Star Wars” universe a mystery to prying eyes. In order for Kenner to be able to produce toys based on the movie, George Lucas gave them access to black and white production photos straight from the set of the movie. And while this worked brilliantly for most of the characters and vehicles, it didn’t work so well for characters that had limited screen time. Snaggletooth was featured in at least one of these photos and, unfortunately, neither his height or the color of his outfit were correctly noted. When Kenner Toys put this version of Snaggletooth in production, they made him the size of a full sized “Star Wars” action figure (3.75 inches) and painted his outfit blue with silver boots. When the movie premiered in 1978, it was only then that Kenner realized their error.
Snaggletooth should be about half the size of a regular action figure, and he should be wearing a red jumpsuit, not a blue one. As a result, the figure was pulled, but not before becoming part of the Sears Exclusive Cantina Adventure Set, which was only sold in Sears stores. Today, the figure in near-mint condition can easily sell for several thousand dollars when graded, depending on condition.
Last but certainly not least, we have to mention the original vinyl cape Jawa. Now every true “Star Wars” fan knows that Jawas are either considered cute or horrendous depending upon what one was going through in their childhood
the first time they saw the original “Star Wars” movie. The rodent-like creatures make their appearance early on in the desert world of Tatooine, where we first meet Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi. Ironically, Kenner did an excellent job at creating the half-sized action figure based on the character, but there was just one problem: Consumers were complaining that the original vinyl cape outfit the character came with looked cheap. As such, some consumers expressed anger over having to pay full retail price for an action figure that was roughly half the size of a standard figure and has what appears to be a cheap diaper wrapped around it for an outfit. Kenner immediately pulled the figure from store shelves and introduced a new version with a more realistic cloth cape. As you can guess, the original vinyl cape version is quite sought after today, and many reproductions exist. Original verified vinyl cape Jawa figures can sell for thousands of dollars on the secondary market and are quite coveted by vintage “Star Wars” collectors today, myself included.
In conclusion, one of the reasons I love the antiques and collectibles trade is that marketing snafus don’t have to leave an awful taste in your mouth or be devoid of “acidic flavor” (I still want to know what that means, Pepsi). Instead they can be great financial investments and become highly soughtafter reminders of a time not so long ago, but definitely from a galaxy far, far away. Until next time, keep searching those toy bins!

chief who led a brigade of American Indians, which included Chickasaw warriors, in support of General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. It was the defeat of the Muscogees at this battle in 1814 that ended the Creek War. Kinheche served as a corporal in McIntosh’s brigade. McIntosh was appointed a brigadier general of the United States Volunteers by Jackson and was integral in the early negotiations and cessations of Creek land to the United States.
In the portrait, Kinheche is shown wearing a fringed hunting shirt adorned with accessories that indicate his status as a warrior and leader among his people. He is wearing silver arm bands, a set of three silver gorgets (ceremonial military pendants worn around the neck and hung from a cord) and a silver headband around a turban with attached black ostrich feathers. In his right hand he is holding a bow and appears to have the hilt of either a dagger or dirk at his waist.
In May 1830, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which began the forced relocation of thousands of American Indians. In August of that year, President Jackson invited the Chickasaw Nation to a treaty council in Franklin, which was the first such treaty negotiation under the act.
Many of the Chickasaw dignitaries selected for the Franklin Summit were those who had fought in the Creek War, including Kinheche; others had served directly under Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Signed on Aug. 31, the treaty finalized details related to the Removal Act, including the exchange of their remaining land in Mississippi and Alabama for land “West of the territory of Arkansas,” with a stipulation that they could examine the land beforehand.
If the land was not found suitable, the treaty would be null and void. Although the Chickasaw sent several delegations west of the Mississippi following the summit to look for land over the next two years, nothing suitable was found. During this time, the signing of the 1830 Franklin treaty created a land rush of white “squatters” who were eager to claim land currently occupied by the Chickasaws.
By 1832, the Chickasaw Nation was being overrun, although the Franklin treaty was supposed to prohibit this from happening; the third Article of the treaty extended protections of the United States to the Chickasaws, but the Federal government did nothing to stop the land grab.
Since no land was found suitable, the treaty was dissolved and was never ratified by Congress. Subsequent treaties were negotiated in 1832, 1834 and 1837, but eventually
the United States paid the Choctaw Nation for the western portions of their lands in present day Oklahoma for use by the Chickasaw Nation.

Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques Show Rides Again 15th
Anniversary Show Had Strong Attendance And Sales
By Karl Pass
Diane Morgan and family started the Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques show 15 years ago in Bethel, Pa., and slowly grew the show into an event. By event, I mean a 200vendor large-scale show of both antique vendors and artisan craftspeople, food trucks,
workshops, and fun. This year, it took place on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in Lebanon, Pa. Morgan fills the exhibit halls with artisans and handmade crafts and also with antique and vintage antique dealers selling their merchandise. The variety is astounding, and country material is the mainstay. Pavilions are loaded with everything from decorative items to primitive antiques and accessories, garden, industrial, architectural, and more. There are artisans selling jewelry, clothings,

The Heims sold the white painted cupboard in the back and the blue painted sled in forefront.

Complete “Magic: The Gathering” Beta Card Set Brings $120,000
Auction included Golden, Silver And Bronze Age Comics, “Peanuts” Comic Strip Art
A complete “Magic: The Gathering” Beta card set from 1993, just the second set for “MTG” with a print run of 3,200 rare cards, sold for $120,000 in an online-only Comics, Comic Art, MTG Booster Boxes and More auction held Oct. 19 by Weiss Auctions, based in Lynbrook, N.Y. Three other “Magic: The Gathering” lots cracked the top 20.
“Magic: The Gathering” (also known simply as “Magic” or “MTG”) is a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and released in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast (now a subsidiary of Hasbro). “MTG” is considered
By Charles Schulz,
the first trading card game (TCG), and over 20 billion of the cards were produced between 2008-2016. “MTG” remains very popular with both collectors and players.
The 1993 Beta set was complete, with 302 black bordered cards. Six of the cards were graded by Beckett, including rare and powerful cards such as Black Lotus (graded BGS 8 NM/MT), Mox Ruby (BGS 8.5 NM/MT+), Mox Sapphire (BGS 8.5 NM/MT+), Mox Emerald (BGS 8 NM/MT), Mox Jet (BGS 8 NM/MT) and Mox Pearl (BGS 8 NM/MT); 299 cards were ungraded.
The other sets in the top 20 included a sealed “Magic: The Gathering” Legends Expansion Set Booster Box, released in 1994, including 36 packs, with 15 cards per pack ($31,200), and two “Magic: The Gathering” Revised 3rd Edition Expansion Set Booster Boxes, released in 1994, including 36 packs, with 15 cards per pack. The Booster Boxes each changed hands for $8,400.
Overall, more than 500 lots came up for bid, to include collections of Golden, Silver and Bronze Age comics; original comic art, including more offerings from the Joe Kubert estate; original “Peanuts” comic strip art by Charles Schulz; and, of course, the collection of unopened “MTG” Booster Boxes and Starter Decks, including Legends, Tempest, Mirage, Homelands and more.
“The sale was incredibly strong, with over 700 people participating on our site, plus Liveauctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and absentee,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions. “The comic and comic art market continues to be blazing hot, with comic art setting records with every sale.” All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
An original, eight-panel “Peanuts” Sunday comic strip art page by Charles Schulz, never before offered at auction and in great condition, went for $50,400. The 23-by-17-inch piece, dated “1-21-73” and published by United Features Syndicate, showed Lucy and Schroeder in five of the eight panels. In one panel, Lucy asks

him, “Do you want to take me to the Senior Prom?”
Another original “Peanuts” strip, this one a smaller daily (but signed and inscribed by Schulz, “To our good friends with every best wish, Charles Schulz and Charlie Brown”), rose to $32,400. The Charlie Brown who also signed the strip was Charles Francis Brown, a neighbor of Schulz’s and the inspiration for the Charlie Brown cartoon character. The strip was dated “8-271962.”
A rarely seen copy of Detective Comics #29 from 1939, featuring just the second-ever “Batman” cover, with an appearance by Dr. Death in the first of a two-part story, cover art by Bob Kane, fetched $32,400. Also, an original penand-ink book illustration by Frank Frazetta for the Doubleday edition of “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs, artist signed, hit $36,000.
Fabulous original cover art for issue #3 of Ragman by Joe Kubert, 11-by-17 inches, rang up $20,400. Other cover art by Kubert in the sale included Sgt. Rock / Our Army at War ($10,500); Sgt. Rock / Old Parisians Never Die ($8,700); Sgt. Rock / Keep Me Alive! ($9,000); two cover artworks for Our Fighting Forces ($8,400,
$6,900); and Son of Tomahawk ($7,500).
Original ink over graphite splash page title art for “Batman” #164 (DC, 1964) by Sheldon Moldoff and Joe Giella, for the story titled “Two-Way Gem Caper!”, with Batman and Robin, finished at $21,600. “Shelly” Moldoff was an acclaimed 1950s-era Bat-artist and Bob Kane’s first assistant on the “Batman” title. “Alteronce Gumby: Dark Matter” Now On View
Artist’s First Solo Museum Show
The Allentown Art Museum is pleased to announce the exhibition
“Alteronce Gumby: Dark Matter” is on view in its upstairs galleries. “Dark Matter” explores the formal, material, and conceptual complexity of Gumby’s paintings, which reflect a profound fascination with the cosmos.
“Dark Matter,” which marks the first solo museum exhibition of Gumby’s work, was

assembled mostly from private collections and includes large-format works, some that fluoresce under black light, and early and more recent works that incorporate shards of tempered glass, gemstones, and other unconventional materials. “Dark Matter” will be at the museum through April 9, 2023.
In his work, Gumby employs color as both material and metaphor, deftly
harnessing its subtle effects and rich tonal relationships while also exploring color’s capacityto create and convey meaning. By focusing on the power of color to signify, the artist’s practice provokes questions about painting’s relation to larger cultural forces and gestures toward more fundamental issues of identity, agency, and invisibility.

Auction House Celebrates Harry Houdini’s Death On Halloween By Selling Great Magician’s Automatic Flowering Rosebush Apparatus For $324,000
Ca.
1924 Mechanism Is Most Expensive Piece Of Magic Memorabilia Ever Sold At Public Auction
Potter & Potter Auctions’ October magic event, timed to coincide with Halloween and the death of escape artist and magician Harry Houdini, who died 96 years ago on Halloween (Oct. 31, 1926), marked the occasion with a world record. The gross total for the sale was $1.2 million.
Lot #68, Harry Houdini’s automatic flowering rosebush, was estimated at $25,000-50,000 and realized $324,000, generating worldwide interest. This object now holds the world’s record for
the expensive piece of magic memorabilia sold at public auction.
Potter’s experts agreed that this example was among the most elaborate and intricate of mechanisms the specialists have encountered. This device was made for Houdini in New York by R.S. Schlosser (and possibly other craftsmen) around 1924. In performance, Houdini placed a small earthenware pot on an elaborate metal table. Next, he planted a small red flower in the pot and covered everything with a
gauzy cloth. On Houdini’s command, the flower grew, slowly and visibly, eventually developing into a full size rose bush. To conclude, Houdini removed the plant in its pot from the tabletop and presented it to the audience. This trick was one of several flashy effects used to open Houdini’s final American tour.
Houdini’s automatic flowering rosebush was one of the crown jewels from the Ken
Klosterman (1933-2020) collection. Klosterman, the former chairman and CEO of the Klosterman Baking Company, had one of the finest private collections of magic memorabilia in the world. It consisted of thousands of vintage magic props, posters, books, and more, many of them one-of-akind pieces of historical significance. The collection had been on display in a private

“To call the moment in the saleroom electric is to sell it short. From the first bid, at $13,000, to the very end, a number I still have a hard time grasping, the ride was a steady
upward clip. For the last 20 bids or so, it was down to two competitors, and they battled it out fiercely. This sale breaks all records, not even the sale of Houdini’s water torture cell comes close,” according to Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions.
