German Auction Company Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion Holds Steiff Sale Realizing Over $670,000 Large Brass Center Seamed Mohair Cub Brings $36,341 Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion’s 367-lot Steiff Special Auction held Nov. 6 attracted buyers from every continent and generated strong results from start to finish. Prices noted include the company’s buyer’s premium and are converted from Euro to U.S. dollar. Early turnof-the-20th-century teddy bears were many of the top lots. A large and appealing brass center seamed mohair cub realized $36,341.60. This handsome, turn-ofthe-20th-century example was fully jointed and measured 20 inches standing. The period features included black shoe button eyes

and a prominent back hump and it retained its long trailing “F” ear button as its Steiff ID. An unusual white mohair bear, ca. 1905, sold for $23,761.82. This 16-inch-tall showstopper was softly stuffed and retained an early prized blank button. It was detailed with black shoe button eyes, a brown embroidered nose and mouth, and a very fuzzy muzzle. Bears from this era usually have shaved muzzles. A rare 16inch-tall white mohair Dicky bear with all IDs sold for $20,966.31. This example from ca. 1930 had stenciled velvet paw pads and pink airbrushed facial highlights. The only

Return Of Scott Antique Markets’ Columbus Shows Deemed A Huge Success Next Show Set For Dec. 18 And 19 “Oh my, it’s so good to see you! I was wondering if you would be here,” proclaimed one show goer. Over and over, phrases like this were repeated throughout the Bricker and Celeste Buildings. Old friends caught up with each other, and customers reunited with their favorite vendors on Nov. 27 and 28 during the grand reopening of the Scott Antique Markets, Columbus, Ohio, shows. Hundreds of vendors converged on the Ohio Expo Center to fill the two large buildings with unique items to sell. Rows upon Continued on page 5

A white mohair bear, ca. 1905, made $23,761.82. This 16-inch-tall showstopper was softly stuffed and retained his early, prized blank button. Detailed with black shoe button eyes, a brown embroidered nose and mouth, and a fuzzy muzzle, most bears from this era usually have shaved muzzles.

A ca. 1929-30 Pupp-Bully Bulldog doll brought $9,504.73. This hybrid rarity, with a dog’s head and a humanly scaled body, was three ways jointed. The Pupp-Bully was in excellent condition and retained its Steiff archive tag and was one of only 20 examples produced by Steiff.

other white Dicky bear with a chest tag which the auction company knows exists is in the Steiff archives in Giengen, Germany. A fully jointed, handpainted velvet Bonzo cartoon dog with IDs and its original Steiff archive tag realized $46,125.54. This 9-inch-tall example from 1927 mirrored his namesake with black and blue glass eyes, a red leather collar, and a red felt tongue. Bonzo was a figure by the English author G. E. Studdy, who personally marketed the success of his character. Steiff wanted to produce Bonzo through a licensing agreement, but Studdy selected the firm Chad Valley instead. This Bonzo is one of only 115 produced by Steiff. An early 1930s era white begging Putzi cartoon character sold for $12,300.24. A rarity in excellent condition with its Steiff button, legible ear tag, and named chest tag came alive with a felt tongue and a black glass button nose and eyes. It wore a striped shirt, orange tie, blue shorts, blue shoes, a leather belt, and tan felt gloves. The Pupp-Bully was in excellent original condition without playwear, retained his Steiff archive tag, and was one of only 20 examples produced by Steiff. Likely a oneof-a-kind sample prototype miniature rabbit from the 1960s made $2,096.63. This fully jointed, 9-inch-tall example was in as new condition with all IDs and had the same pattern as the company’s legacy, standard line 43 and 60 cm “Lulac” style long limbed rabbits. Steiff’s beloved pre-war dogs and cats also made headlines in this sale. An 8inch-tall sitting cat with distinctive mottled mohair sold for $6,150.12. The cat featured green and black slit pupil eyes, a pink embroidered nose and mouth, and red claws. The 1930s era example with IDs was from the collection of German Steiff experts Edith and Johan Koskinen. A petitely proportioned standing

Charly the King Charles Spaniel sold for $4,752.36. This ca. 1928 example measured 3 inches tall and was made from white and brown tipped mohair and white felt. Charly retained all of the IDs including button, cloth tag, and named, metal-rimmed chest tag. Pre-war apes and primates were another strong category. An extremely rare and fully jointed white mohair monkey realized $9,784.28. Produced at the turn of the 20th century, this 19-inch-tall example had black shoe button eyes, a felt face, ears, hands, and feet and retained its original blank Steiff button. An unusual orange mohair Mimocculo baby orangutan brought $7,967.20. This early 1930s-era fully jointed primate novelty featured lifelike rolling glass eyeballs that were activated by pulling or twisting its felt ears. This auction came full circle with antique button-in-ear dolls, novelties, and other animals. A 4-inch-tall sitting velvet and mohair squirrel from ca. 1905-06 went for $5,730.79. It was detailed with black shoe button eyes and brown painted contouring and held a red pompom as a nut between the two front paws. According to Pia Fast Seidel of Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion, “I am truly delighted with the results of this amazing sale. It is the largest and most successful Steiff exclusive auction we have ever held. This event featured museum-quality collections from the U.S. and Europe from consignors who recognized Ladenburger Spielzeugauktion as the premier auction house in the world for buying and selling fine Steiff rarities. We were also excited to see that this sale caught the eye of many new bidders from North America as we look to build our visibility, business, and customer base in the States and Canada.” L a d e n b u r g e r Spielzeugauktion GmbH, founded in 1989, is headquartered in the ancient Roman city of Ladenburg, Germany, with a satellite office in Switzerland. For more information, visit www.spielzeugauktion.de.

A 4-inch-tall mohair and velvet sitting Bully the Bulldog realized $5,171.69. Produced from 1927-31, this fine head jointed example retained its decorative horsehair collar and all his IDs, including his button, cloth tag, and, most desirable, the named, metal-rimmed chest tag.

An early post WWI era chimp made from brown substitute paper plush sold for $7,408.10. This extraordinary, ephemeral example measured 7 inches tall sitting, had a linen face, hands, and feet, and retained the button as its Steiff ID.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: Buying Antiques As A Hedge On Inflation

Throughout the holiday season, I have been hearing about anticipated shortages of gifts in the stores due to a host of reasons. We have all been warned to shop early and even then not to expect to get what you are looking for because of insufficient quantities of items. To all of that, my answer is to buy antiques as holiday gifts. For years, I have espoused buying antiques as gifts. It is timeless, it is classy, it appreciates (hopefully) in value and perhaps it reignites or starts a new generation of collectors. So, to start, how about

grinders, how about getting a nice period coffee can to go with it. For the collector of pattern glass, how about some linens that either show off the pieces or can be used with them. All in all, this is a great year to go out and hit the antique malls and shops or go to an auction to find that perfect treasure!

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

on the spur of the moment. With high prices, I am sure that homemade cookies will be a bigger than ever house warming gift this year. Instead of putting them in a tin, how about putting them on a piece of antique flow blue china? I was in an antiques mall near Harrisburg about two weeks ago and purchased a stack of Chapoo pattern flow blue plates for $20 each. They are beautiful and period and will make great gifts. Buying for the hardcore collector is always tough since they usually know exactly what they want and have a fairly defined list of what they are seeking. As my wife said to me, “If you see something for your collection, you buy it. Don’t leave it for me to find and gift to you.” Fair enough if you have very focused collecting. But, I would say that there are plenty of supporting things to get the committed collector in your life. This includes frames for art collectors, sleeves for paper collectors, reference books for everyone and display items. What I mean by the latter is that for the collector of coffee

buying one of those classic Lionel train sets for the young person in your life. Give them a wonderful experience that is not only fun to assemble but even more fun to operate. Maybe that teenager in your life really harbors a secret fantasy about playing a guitar, then maybe a nice secondhand guitar is a way to test those waters without a huge investment. And antique jewelry is always appropriate to give. Whether a diamond necklace or a trifari pin, nothing says classy holidays like an antique. With jewelry, I really do think the antiques market is the way to go. When one sees the hefty prices in retail stores for jewelry, common sense tells you that antiques are the best way to get the bang for your buck. Also, as a gentle reminder, many of the stones that are sold in new retail are in fact recycled older stones that have been recut. So, why not buy the bigger stone in the original setting than to get something smaller in a new one. Finally, this is the season when one needs holiday gifts

figure in the Marvel Comics Universe (MCU) in the nearly six decades since. The Master of the Mystic Arts has solidified his stature through his role in MCU movies, as a character in “Strange Tales” and ultimately in his own title, with this image fronting the premiere issue. “For original art from the 1970s to top $400,000 is incredible,” according to Heritage Auctions senior vice president Ed Jaster. “Frank Brunner’s ‘Dr. Strange (Doctor Strange)’ covers set an unmatched standard for the character’s artwork. Meanwhile, 355 lots from the historic Promise Collection Pedigree found new homes in the sale, reaching a total of $4.69 million. The collection earned its moniker because

the young boy who assembled the collection went off to war and never returned. For decades, the books were kept safe by his brother, who promised to protect the collection if anything happened to his brother on the battlefield. The lots in this sale represent the third installment from this trove to be offered this calendar year through Heritage. Highlights from the Promise Collection included a “Captain America Comics” No. 1 (Timely, 1941), CGC VG- 3.5 cream to off-white pages, which drew 44 bids to soar past its pre-auction estimate and bring $240,000. cover original art (Simon & Schuster, 1974) soared to $312,000, more than six times its pre-auction estimate. Don Heck’s “Tales of Suspense” No. 50 complete 13-page story “The Hands of the Mandarin!” original art (Marvel, 1964) sold for $210,000. This story includes the first appearance of the evil scientist known as “The Mandarin,” one of Iron Man’s first and most dangerous foes. Carl Bark’s 1934 “Belchfire Runabout!” CB-OIL 127 original painting (1984), created to celebrate Donald Duck’s 50th birthday and starring a cast of characters that includes A-listers Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Uncle Scrooge, as well as Daisy Duck, Grandma Duck, Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose and Horace Horsecollar, brought $162,000. Barry Smith’s “Conan the

Barbarian” No. 15 cover original art (Marvel, 1972) realized $150,000, while Al Feldstein’s “Panic” No. 1 cover original art (EC, 1954) reached $132,000 against a pre-auction estimate of $10,000. Another lot of original art yielded six-figure results: Dick Giordano’s “The Joker” No. 1 cover original art (DC, 1975) sold for $120,000 against an estimate of $20,000. “There was a lot to like in this sale, part of which was the fact that 18 lots brought in $100,000 or more,” said Barry Sandoval, vice president at Heritage. “But even better was the fact that 10 consignors took home a quarter of a million dollars or more. When we can do that for consignors and their families, that is as gratifying as anything we do.” For more information, visit www.HA.com.

Mid-Century chairs, sofas, end tables, wooden China cabinets and more were carted away on hand trucks ready for new homes. Customers also combed through stacks of antique and vintage rugs trying to find the perfect fit for their homes. Holiday décor left the show in droves.
