Holy Wind-Up Batmobile!

After a long, fierce bidding war, a Batmobile tin toy made in 1966 for the Japanese market roared out of Heritage Auctions for $150,000 to lead Heritage’s two-day Ultimate Batman Collection Signature Auction held Aug. 4 and 5. The rare wind-up with a painted plastic Batman at the wheel and the original box is now the most valuable Batman toy ever sold at auction.

Yonezawa, one of the most imaginative and successful Japanese tin toy makers of the 1950s and ’60s, made the Batmobile, which, on day one of the sale, raced past the previous auction record for a Bat-toy set in 2021. It was also far from the sole Japanese-made Bat-toy to shatter expectations during the sold-out auction, totaling $1,395,762.

“The Batman Japanese tin toys certainly made their mark,” said Heritage’s consignment director of Action Figures and Toys, Justin Caravoulias. “They accounted for more than $459,000 of the total.”

More than 1,000 bidders worldwide participated in the auction, which abounded with exceedingly rare toys, dolls, robots, action figures, dioramas,

original packaging art, prized trinkets and other memorabilia featuring Batman, Robin and their famous foes. These treasures, most in or with their original packaging, also spanned the globe, hailing from Japan, England, the United States, South America, Europe and beyond.

There was no shortage of bidding wars for every Bat-rarity, as evidenced by this Batpen counter display card with a single pen made for the UK market in 1966 by Derasco. It realized $20,000.

From the moment live bidding began, it was clear that there was a voracious appetite for the international rarities available in this first-ofits-kind event: The 621-lot auction broke the halfmilliondollar barrier in less than an hour.

A decorated tin frictionpowered Cessna, made by Japanese toy manufacturer Takatoku in the 1960s, was the first lot to take flight, and it shattered pre-auction estimates when it sold for $20,000. Moments later, a tin Batcopter made in 1966 by Masudaya brought $22,500.

A few lots later, a tin Batmobile race car with its original box, also from Masudaya in 1966, raced to a new Batcave for $32,500. Just one lot later, a 1966 tin Batmobile race car, this one from Japanese toymaker Yonezawa, sold for $35,000. Then came the $150,000 Batmobile.

“This weekend’s results show, as we’ve long known, that there is an incredible international appetite for Japanese popular culture,” according to Heritage Auctions executive vice president Joe Maddalena. “These Japanese toy rarities are largely unknown except

in Japan, but it’s clear from this auction’s runaway success that a worldwide audience is eager to bid on and compete for the best of the best in character collectibles.” Nearly every lot in this event sparked lengthy tussles between clientcollectors who quickly realized they wouldn’t likely see a collection like this again in their lifetimes. A battery-operated Batman robot made by Bandai in the 1960s, still with its original box, realized $42,500. An early action figure made in Hong Kong in 1966 likewise proved

its reputation asa holy grail: Bidding on Marx’s bendable Batman, who was still attached to hiscard, encased in plastic alongside his cape, Batarang, roller skates and several other accessories, sold for $21,250. Collectors vied for numerous utility belts, including the Bat-Belt and Gun Set made by Toyo Denki in 1966, which was in its original box and realized $13,750.

In 2017, millions of people listened to “S-Town,” a seven-part podcast from Serial Productions and “This American Life” that focused on one man, John B. McLemore.

In the podcast, John’s work as an antiquarian horologist was overshadowed by the shocking aspects of his life and death. This exhibit and the accompanying book highlight John’s superb craftsmanship in restoring these iconic clocks. Antique Gold-Rush Era Bottles, Coins, Tokens, And Postcards Among Categories Sold In Three-Day Sale

Holabird Held Auction On July 28, 29, And 30

Rare Gold Rush-era antique bottles, 19th-century stock certificates, boxing cards from the first half of the 20th century and scarce old coins and tokens all did well in Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC’s online-only “Time Flies in July” auction, held July 28 to 30. The special timed auction featured nearly 2,200 lots in many categories.

The auction was hosted exclusively on iCollector.com (Holabird’s online bidding platform) and contained collectibles in over ten categories, including postcards and stamps, mining, art, general Americana, books, bottles, stocks, numismatics, railroad, tokens, Native Americana and more. Every lot had a starting price of $10.

Day one contained 728 lots

of general Americana, to include autographs, books, collectibles, cowboy, entertainment, ephemera, firefighting memorabilia, fraternal organizations, gaming, jewelry, maps, model railroading, music, photography and sports.

The day’s top achiever (and the overall top lot of the auction) was a group of three scrolls and maps containing early data (1950s and ’60s) on whitewater canoeing and rafting, plus other activities. The rapids ratings, maps and other material pertained mostly to the Colorado River and Salmon River National Forest. They sold for $2,875.

Groups of picture cards featuring boxing greats such as Kid Gavilan, John L. Sullivan, Rocky Marciano, Gene Tunney, Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey scored a knockout with bidders, who were attracted to the colorful photos and stances. Two groups of 60 each “Boxers of Yesteryear” brought $562,50 and $500, while a lot of 11 “Boxing Champions of the Past” made $312.50.

A group of three cotton

bale shipping receipts from ca. 1845-79, via steamer and other modes of transportation, one from 1866 having a two-cent brown adhesive revenue stamp, went for $281.25. Also, a copy of an “Outlaws of the West” scrapbook with 64 pages of famous and not so famous outlaws, Wild West shows, lawmen and a Judge Roy Bean wanted poster, hit $237.50.

A hoard of around 600

issued Humboldt County, Nev., warrants from the 1920s, issued by the treasurer of the county, signed by the county auditor and datelined Winnemucca, realized $237.50, while a framed Colorado Pabst Chemical Company cures broadside sold for $212.50. Day two was packed with more than 750 lots of tobacco and saloon, bottles, firearms and weapons, militaria, politi-

Collector Anecdotes And Antics

The Books You Should Read

time. Narrowing recommendations of books to just collectors does an injustice to other market participants that have, at times, more clout than that of even the most studious and experienced collectors. This is why I recommend the five books listed below to anyone operating in the antiques and collectibles trade at present time.

Change is the only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade. Newcomers to the trade need to understand that just because something is popular, in demand, or valuable today does not mean that the trend will continue. One of the questions I am often asked by enthusiasts are what books do I think every participant in the antiques and collectibles trade should read?

Note: I did not just say collectors; I used the word participants. This is important because I feel that we need to recognize the fact that the current modern era antiques and collectibles trade does not just belong to collectors. There are dealers, auction houses, grading companies, speculators, investors, and, yes, also collectors operating in these markets at any given

5. “How to Make the Most of Your Investments in Antiques and Collectibles” by collectibles expert Harry Rinker. Be forewarned that the subtitle of this book reads:

“The First Insider’s Guide to Manipulating the Antiques and Collectibles Markets to Maximize your Investment.”

This book was published in 1988, and while it is true that the market for antiques and collectibles has changed drastically since then, few can deny the fact that collectors are sometimes overly attached to the items they collect. This can lead collectors astray by blinding them to how these markets work from a financial perspective. This book helps expose the ugly truth that market manipulation is quite common in a trade where regulation is almost nonexistent. This book is not without its flaws given it was published in the preinternet era. That said, it is a

must-read for anyone who thinks they can financially outsmart not only wealthy collectors with deep pockets, but also the executives sitting atop the most prestigious auction houses that now dominate the trade. Every single enthusiast I have recommended this book to has come away with at least

Midsummer Circus, Sideshow And Oddities Sale

Potter & Potter Auctions held an annual signature sale on July 29, totaling $442,000. All prices noted include the company’s 20percent buyer’s premium.

Antique and vintage circus posters and banners, carved wooden carousel animals, and unusual taxidermied animals/oddities were among the highlights. Antique carousel figures took many top spots.

A restored Dentzel carousel tiger was estimated at $10,000-$20,000 and made $22,500. The ca. 1915 example measured 50 inches tall and 7 feet long. It had been acquired at auction from The Carrousel Collection of Swen Swenson in 1993. A restored E. Joy Morris carousel horse, estimated at $13,000-$18,000, delivered $16,250. It was produced in Philadelphia in the early 1900s. This 59-by-66-inch standing horse was decorated with a tassel on its head and

estimated at $200-$400 and delivered $2,400. This handpainted likeness of Fedor Jeftichew (1868-1904), also nicknamed “Jo Jo the Dog Faced Boy,” dated ca. 1890/1900s. It was once displayed at The Great Dime Museum in

This sale rounded out with circusiana, posters, banners, and other curious rarities. A linen backed poster for “Barnum & Bailey / Jo-Jo,”

estimated at $2,000-$4,000, made $6,000. It was printed in Paris ca. 1880-90 and featured a bust portrait of the Dog Faced Man. A pair of 16-inchlong painted clown shoes, estimated at $400-$600, realized $4,000. These high-top leather clown shoes dated from the early to mid-20th century and were decorated with multi-color stripes.

“Joe Allen the Human

It was produced in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. This standing, inside row neighing horse was detailed with a rose on its head, feathers, and authentic horse hair tail.

Strange sideshow oddities were also well represented in sale. A 20th-century prosthetic glass eye collection was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and made $5,250. It consisted of 171 brown eyes stored in a wooden case. “Jo Jo the Dog Faced Boy” head bust was

Brooklyn, N.Y., an attraction which operated in the 1890s and specialized in displaying life-size figures of famous human oddities.

Circus poster maquettes printed in Erie by the Erie Lithographing and Printing Co. were another premier category in this auction. “Clyde Beatty - Russell Bros. Circus / Clyde Beatty Greatest Wild Animal Trainer of All Time,” estimated at $500-$700, sold for $3,360. It was printed ca. 1920-30, depicting Clyde Beatty taming animals. “Cole Bros. commissioned work by Ahchipaptunhe (Delaware Tribe of Indians and Cherokee), Joe Baker (Delaware Tribe of Indians), Holly Wilson (Delaware Nation and Cherokee), and Nathan Young (Delaware Tribe of Indians, Pawnee, and Kiowa) that expresses personal and tribal identity and address the Lenape’s violent displacement from Lenapehoking, the Lenape homeland which encompasses the region where the Michener Art Museum currently stands.

Curated by Joe Baker, cofounder and executive director of Lenape Center in

Territory, one aqua crown top and the other clear crown top, both sold for $937.50.

Stock certificates were led by two examples from the Republic of Texas, dated 1840. One was certificate no. 1364, issued to P. Burns for $100 ($812.50). The other was certificate no. 674, issued to Joseph C. Eldridge for $500 ($750). Both were signed by Charles DeMorse as Stock Commissioner and James Wright Simmons as Comptroller and featured gorgeous vignettes.

An American Express Company stock certificate from 1863, signed by Henry Wells as president and William G. Fargo as secretary (two of the three founders of American Express and Wells, Fargo & Company) brought $625. Also, a group of 21 framed stock certificates from railroad and mining companies in and around Cripple Creek,

Manhattan, and Laura Turner Igoe, Ph.D., chief curator at the Michener Art Museum, “Never Broken” will include approximately 50 artworks and objects from 10 private and institutional lenders. It will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with essays by Baker, Igoe, and Brooklyn-based writer Joel Whitney that will be published later this fall.

“We are excited to share this groundbreaking exhibition with our visitors. Through a focus on Lenape art and culture and a critical examination of historical visualizations of Native and European

American relationships, ‘Never Broken’ demonstrates the ways in which art can create, challenge, and rewrite history,” states Igoe.

“The Michener Museum of Art has assembled the legitimate heirs to Lenapehoking in this evocative new exhibit, ‘Never Broken: Visualizing Lenape Histories.’ Four contemporary Lenape artists through their arts practice push back against a silenced history and shed light on one of the world’s most horrific genocides,” added Baker.

The exhibition interrogates many prints, paintings, and decorative arts that

incorporate imagery from Benjamin West’s iconic painting “Penn’s Treaty with the Indians” (1771-72). West’s composition depicting a treaty of peace between the Pennsylvania Province’s founder William Penn and Tamanend, Chief of the LenniLenape Turtle Clan, praised by Anglo-Americans as an agreement that was “never broken” went viral in a pre-internet age, appearing on textiles, fine porcelain, and other printed material in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Bucks County painter Edward Hicks (1780-1849) appropriated West’s

composition for his own paintings of Penn’s Treaty (a recent Michener acquisition) and incorporated the scene into his well-known Peaceable Kingdom series. Paintings of Penn’s Treaty by Hicks and others attempted to rewrite the fraught history of Native and Anglo-American conflict with a myth of peaceful co-existence. To counter this narrative, the exhibition features historic and contemporary Lenape art demonstrating that the Lenape’s ties to the area were, unlike Penn’s Treaty, never broken.

Colo., 1890s-1940s, reached $281.25.

The auction’s last day featured more than 700 lots of art, Native Americana, numismatics, tokens, philatelic (stamps) and postal history. The day’s top lot was a group of five miscellaneous pieces, including an 1853 half dime, an Ohio Volunteers medal presented to Henry Ford, an 1849 California token with the American flag, and a tiny spiel mark, sold for $1,438.

This 1874 California round fractional gold half dollar, BG 1053, in Very Fine-Extra Fine condition, changed hands for $625. Back-To-School Special Sales Display

At Haddon Heights Is Full Of Nostalgia

The first full month of the new school year is September, so it’s fitting that the September special sales display at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center is devoted to vintage school-related antiques and collectibles.

Take a walk down memory lane and view numerous school texts of all eras, particularly the primers that taught young children to read. Nostalgia for Dick, Jane, and Sally continues to run high. Shop goers will also find slates, pencils, crayons, rulers, school photos, report cards, yearbooks, and school bells. Don’t be surprised to see a

world globe or a typewriter, too.

The technology revolution of the last quarter-century has irrevocably changed education in our country, so old school vintage items are a revelation to a younger generation used to computers, printers, and online search engines, and now ChatGPT.

Visiting the Haddon Heights

Antiques Center is often a revelation for new customers, who are amazed by the size of this two-story cooperative, the variety offered by its dozens of dealers, and the generous discount policy.

The shop is located at the corner of East Atlantic Avenue and Clements Bridge Road, where Haddon Heights and Barrington meet at the railroad tracks. For GPS, use 531 Clements Bridge Road in Barrington, N.J. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Friday evenings.

For directions or more information, call 856-546-0555.

one thing that has helped them become a better participant in the trade. Since this book was published 35 years ago, it can be hard to locate a copy, but if you do come across it, be sure to grab it and read it thoroughly at least once.

4. “Comic Wars: Marvel’s Battle for Survival” by Dan Raviv. I love when comic book collectors tell me that their beloved superheroes will always be with us and continue to prosper. Few are aware that well before Disney acquired Marvel Comics, the colorful comic book company that graces the title of this book was almost bankrupt.

This book brilliantly explains what happens to a company when it is exploited solely for profit at the hands of Wall Street executives. It tells the story of Marvel Comics from its infancy to the 1990s during the comic book speculator boom. I am often criticized for recommending this book to everyone instead of just comic book enthusiasts, but the story and lessons presented here are eternal, as any popular licensed property can be exploited and devalued at the hands of corporate raiders. Most likely, your favorite pop culture collecting category is no different. And if you are a comic book collector, some of the decisions made by the executives running Marvel Comics back in the 1990s as

described in this book will leave you shaking your head in despair and understanding why Disney now owns the company.

3. “The Great Beanie Bubble: Mass Delusion and the Dark Side of Cute” by Zac Bissonnette. I get asked on a regular basis as to how anyone could have been caught up in the Beanie Baby speculator bubble of the 1990s, and my response is always the same: You just had to be there. Make no mistake, speculative bubbles in the antiques and collectibles trade are quite normal, and each generation goes through several of them and some people still fail to learn their lessons. This book eloquently captures exactly how this mania played out and how it was meticulously manipulated

by its eccentric creator (Ty Werner) to do just that. It is well worth reading and serves as an excellent complement to some of the other books on this list.

2. “Mint Condition: How Baseball Cards Became an American Obsession” by Dave Jamieson. Speaking of speculative bubbles, baseball cards went through a massive speculative bubble back in the 1980s and 1990s that sent shockwaves through the market after it collapsed. The market would take more than a decade to recover, and this book captures the mania and aftermath firsthand. Even if you have no interest in baseball cards or sports (I have no interest in either), this book is still well worth reading to understand how it all happened.

1. “Killer Stuff and Tons of Money” by Maureen Stanton. This is most likely one of the best books you will ever read about the business of antiques and collectibles and the people behind them. More surprisingly, however, is the fact that this book was written by someone who is not even directly involved in the antiques and collectibles trade. My one and only criticism of this book is that it was written during the direct aftermath of the 2008/09 financial crisis and, as such, paints a negative picture of the antiques and collectibles trade as a result. That said, it is by far one of the most informative books on the inner workings of the trade, taking you behind the scenes with an experienced antiques dealer who is just trying to make a

modest living. I have long hoped for a followup to this book. Maureen Stanton, are you reading this by chance?

In conclusion, if you read even half of the books listed here, you will have more knowledge than many active participants in the trade. If you grew up in the 1980s, always remember the words that graced the ending lesson featured in every single GI Joe animated cartoon, “Knowing is half the battle.” Stay safe out there, my fellow collectors.
