Capt. George Armstrong Custer’s Gun Holster Rig From The Civil War Sells For $37,500 Holster Was Officer Standard Issue To Fit Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver U.S. Army Captain George Armstrong Custer’s gun holster, dispatch case, belt and brass buckle from the Civil War climbed to $37,500, taking top lot honors in a five-day, 3,100-lot November Wonders: Western Americana Auction held Nov. 18 to 22 by Holabird Western Americana Collections, online and live at the gallery in Reno, Nev. The holster was standard issue for officers during the Civil War to fit the Colt model 1860 Army revolver. There are two photos in the book “Custer in Photographs” (Katz, 1985, pages 12 and 13) depicting Custer wearing this rig, about 1863. Close examination reveals that the same holster is worn with the same cut-away in the Army issue holster, where the captain has carved out a notch. The auction was loaded with Western Americana, mining, numismatics, stock certificates, rare books, art and more. “This was supposed to be an end-of-year, under-the-radar clearance sale, so we didn’t market it too heavily, but the results were a pleasant surprise,” said Fred Holabird of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “Collectors are out in

full force with money to spend.” All prices include the buyer’s premium. Day one contained just over 600 lots of art, firearms and weapons, foreign items, political memorabilia, militaria, tools, Native Americana, sports collectibles and items pertaining to transportation. The Custer Civil War holster and dispatch case was the undisputed first session highlight, but other offerings from the aforementioned categories also fetched nice prices. Day two was dedicated entirely to stocks and bonds (in categories that included mining, railroad, brewing and express). An 1891 stock certificate for the George Armstrong Custer’s gun holster, dispatch case, belt and brass buckle sold Missouri, Kansas and for $37,500. The holster was issued to officers during the Civil War to fit the Colt Texas Railway Company model 1860 Army revolver. for 100 shares, issued to Day three featured 609 lots of diameter, rose to $1,952, while an wealthy oil tycoon and philanthropist John D. Simmons Bird Sells For $23,100 At Kutztown Sale Iconic Folk Art Still Surfaces In Pennsylvania German Countryside By Karl Pass The George Miller IV Auction Co. held a multi-consignor sale at Beltzner Hall in Kutztown, Pa., on Oct. 23. The star of the auction was a wooden carved and painted bird on a stand attributed to “Schtockschnitzler” Simmons. The itinerant carver referred to as Simmons is known to have spent time in the Moselem Springs area of Berks County in the late 19th and early 20th century. The forename of “Schtockschnitzler” loosely translates to “old man cane carver.” He carved canes, birds on stands, and bird trees, and the Continued on page 5

Horst Holds Two-Day Catalog Sale Glass Flasks, Hattie Brunner Paintings, And Horse-Drawn Hearse Among Top Lots By Karl Pass Horst Auction Center in Ephrata, Pa., held a 598-lot two-day sale, Nov. 19 and 20, which grossed $181,705. Horst does not charge a buyer’s premium. There is a 10-percent premium for absentee bids and online bidding. Internet bidding for catalog sales is through Invaluable.com. Loaded with country gear, the first session kicked off with several lots of Carl Snavely folk carvings. Snavely (1915-83) of Lititz, Pa., belonged to the Lancaster County Wood Carvers group and by profession was a shipping clerk at the Badorf Shoe Company. A part-time antiques dealer, Snavely set up at several regional shows. Thanks to Dick and Rosemarie Machmer’s 1991 book “Just For Nice” and accompanying exhibition, Snavely’s work gained a much larger recognition than while he was working, which was primarily in the 1960s and ’70s. A nearly 9inch-tall unpainted finely carved bird, lot #1, brought $900. A pair of painted 4.25inch-tall “goony” birds sold for $400. His work is signed with a “CS” underneath the base. The initials are carved into the wood. accessories also sold day one. Pottery, glassware, iron hardware, woodenware started the second session. An autumn auction scene by folk painter and antiques dealer Hattie Brunner (1889-1982) sold for $11,000. A ca. 1958 (early in her career) watercolor farm scene titled “Making Apple Butter” sold for $8,600. Both went to a local collector. This particular collector has just recently entered the Brunner painting market buying others at Horst sales. Another local collector underbid. Among the most unique items in the sale was an antique wooden carved ornately decorated horsedrawn black painted hearse. It was thought to be from a funeral home in Schuylkill Haven, Pa., late 19th/early 20th century, and sold for $17,500. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: The Collector’s Birthday

By Peter Seibert A few weeks ago, I attended a gathering hosted by Penn State Harrisburg to honor my mentor, friend and now retired professor of American Studies, Dr. Irwin Richman. The evening celebrated his birthday and supported the scholarship funds that many

of his former students have contributed to in his honor. Irwin is well-known in both museum and collector circles throughout central Pennsylvania. At Adamstown, he has been a regular Sunday buyer of European and American fine and decorative arts for more than three decades. Academically, he has written more than 30 books on a host of subjects on art, architecture, gardening and the decorative arts. For many of us in the museum world, he has been our mentor and teacher. At one time, nearly every museum and historical society in southcentral Pennsylvania was staffed, and in most cases led, by his former students. The evening was filled with lots of speeches and tributes. One theme that ran through the evening was about Irwin’s

collection of art and antiques. For those who know him, the exhibition of his collection, in a salon style, was his way of showcasing a lifetime of collecting. Every space in his home was covered with paintings from floor to ceiling. Even the thermostat might have a work hanging from the box. This style of installation was not something that he invented but rather goes back in time to the Renaissance princes in Italy and thence to Victorian and Edwardian collectors in this country. It was couched at the heart of all collectors, the desire to showcase their collections. This is a style that we have in our home and, as I learned from others at the dinner, has been replicated by many others as well. I smiled as I heard students and colleagues talk about

creating salon installations of their collections in their home. And then I thought back to that hideous group that is the bane of the antiques world, minimalists. Even back in the 1980s when I had Irwin as a student, there were classmates who were aghast at showing so much art. They would rather have one picture on the wall and nothing else. To them the idea of a salon installation was too much. In today’s world, minimalism seems to be a dominant trend. During Covid, I binge watched lots of decorator channels and was aghast at the Spartan interiors that people created for themselves. And their view, this ubiquitous less is better approach, is so they can appreciate the few things they have. Or, it’s “I like

fewer things because I do not believe in materialism.” Of course, when you look at what they have, you realize they love materialism, of the expensive, new, modern kind. But that is another story. The lesson for me for the evening was how the taste of a single person can not only influence others but can also speak to the heart of being a collector. There are the collectors who hide their treasures away and never lend them to museum exhibits, never share them with family or friends, and end up often being lost because no one cares about them. Then there are collectors who showcase their collections in big and bold ways to show them to family, friends, the public and others. That’s a heck of a legacy.

Happy Richman!

birthday,

Dr.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Two 18th-Century Powder Horns Bring A Combined $66,420 Arms And Militaria Sale In Rhode Island Was Nov. 20 Two carved powder horns dating to the American Revolution and earlier sold for a combined $66,420, and a silver Captain Isaac Hull presentation medal from 1812 knocked down for $40,590 in Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ fall Historic Arms & Militaria Auction held on Nov. 20, online and live in the firm’s Cranston, R.I., gallery. It was just the second such auction conducted by Bruneau & Co.’s newly formed Arms & Militaria Department, led by Joel Bohy. “It was great to see so many faces in the gallery, and the bidding was active and lively,” stated Bohy. “We sold some wonderful historic items which did very well.

After researching them, it was nice to see them go off to new homes.” The sale was packed with over 500 items focusing on the French and Indian War, American Revolution, Civil War, World Wars I and II and modern firearms. “It was a fantastic sale with strong results,” said Bruneau & Co. president Kevin Bruneau. “I was happy that the Hull medal found a home at a New England institution where patrons can enjoy it for years to come.” He was referring to lot #75, a ca. 1812 silver medal presented by the U.S. Congress to Lt. Alexander Scammel Wadsworth, for gallantry in the naval battle USS Constitution vs. HMS

Portland, Maine, he became a midshipman on April 2, 1804, and a lieutenant on April 21, 1810. He went on to have a distinguished naval career and died on April 5, 1851. He was also the uncle of author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The sale’s top lot was a Revolutionary War powder horn from 1775, carved near the base, “The Royal Artillery,” and owned by Siege of Boston minute man Thomas Smith. It realized $44,280. The horn was marked, “Thomas Smith, His Horne Made at Brookline Fort August XV: MDCC: LXXV 1775”

and had carvings of a hunter firing his musket and other scenes. Thomas Smith was born in Rowley, Mass., in 1748. In April 1775 he marched to Boston with Captain Thomas Mighill’s company of minutemen and enlisted in Col. Samuel Gerrish’s regiment. He was stationed at Sewall’s Point in Brookline, the site of Brookline Fort, where the horn was made. His enlistment ended, and he returned home in December. For The Saturday Evening Post he painted myriad images of the soldier home from war, including the iconic “Homecoming GI” that appeared in May 1945 and was famously used in the film “Broadcast News.” “Home for Thanksgiving” became so beloved because it showed “the veteran doing K.P. Conodoguinet Creek sometime following the Civil War. With limited English, he depended upon sympathetic farmers for survival. These families provided Schimmel food and shelter in exchange for his labor and woodcarvings. Schimmel tramped up and down the valley, moving from farm to farm. He was an alcoholic and had a serial pattern of arrests. Many of his alcoholic escapades were reported in the many area newspapers. His reputation was that for being “surly” and was characterized as such in his 1890 obituary. Dwelling on the fringes of society, Schimmel’s only trusted companions were the farm families, whom he entertained with his art. Directly carving a found piece of soft pine wood with a pocket knife, his particular gift was to magnify the personality of his subject, usually a local animal. It is probable that at some point, Schimmel saw a Staffordshire “Death of Munro” figure and possibly learned of the ghastly tale. Perhaps he was commissioned by a patron to carve the tiger, at any rate, Schimmel created his own. “The Death of Munro” is atypical of Schimmel’s oeuvre, the only one of its kind. Schimmel carved other tigers and also lions, but this narrative piece is unique for the detail in its teeth and human figure in the mouth. In spite of whatever quantities of spirits he used to ease his existence, his carving technique is clear and lucid. The tiger’s blackclawed feet seem to grow out of the slight curve of the base. The legs are sculpted for power. Schimmel’s intuitive cuts form planes and facets of a sinewy strength. Every subtractive cut of his pocket knife contributes to the art. The tiger is powerful and athletic, ready to spring off its base and bound away. It crunches the flailing figure, the great nose wrinkling in disgust at the human taste. Dwarfing the figure in its jaws, each tooth is the size of a man’s hand. Carefully gessoed and painted, the fangs are lined with blood. The tail has been expertly restored, its twitchy form conveying the bristling energy of a Schimmel beast. Clearly here, the tiger is king, a result that would gratify Tipu Sultan himself. The “Death of Munro” folk carving is Wilhelm Schimmel at the top of his form and is set to cross the auction block on Friday, Jan. 14, at Pook & Pook in Downingtown, Pa. For additional information, call Pook & Pook at 610-269-4040.

On Dec. 21, 1792, in the Bay of Bengal, a small party fatefully disembarked the ship Shah Ardaseer to hunt deer on Saugor Island, resulting in an event that would resonate for decades to follow. In the words of party member Captain Henry Conran: “I heard a roar, like thunder, and saw an immense royal tiger spring on the unfortunate Munro, who was sitting down. In a moment, his head was in the beast’s mouth, and he rushed into the jungle with him, with as much ease as I could lift a kitten, tearing him through the thickest bushes and trees, everything yielding to his monstrous strength… The human mind cannot form an idea of the scene; it turned my very soul within me. The beast was about four and a half feet high and nine long. His head appeared as large as an ox’s, his eyes darting fire, and his roar, when he first seized his prey, will never be out of my recollection” (Munro, Colin, “Thus were the British defeated,” London Review of Books,

feed the Georgian public’s fascination for exotic animals and growing appetite for sensation. Stories, poems, and plays were written, images were printed, and cautionary tales for children were fulfilled. What enshrined the story in cultural immortality, and launched a thousand images, was the 1799 discovery of the tiger automaton during the sack of Tipu Sultan’s summer palace. Transported to London in 1800, Tipu’s Tiger was exhibited in the East India Company Museum, where it enthralled viewers for decades with its gruesome charm. Today, it is the top attraction of the V&A Museum. Fascination with tiger maulings and Munro’s death continued throughout the 19th century as tales from the British Empire circled the globe. “Death of Munro” merchandise continued to be prevalent, including, around 1810, the production of pearlware figures by Staffordshire potteries. Far, far away, and at the close of the 19th century, in Pennsylvania’s agrarian Cumberland Valley, an unlikely candidate set his hand to framing the tiger’s fearful symmetry. Wilhelm Schimmel was one of the more colorful inhabitants in the region of mainly ScotchIrish, Welsh, and German run farms surrounding the town of Carlisle. A German immigrant, he washed up on the shores of the

Hector Sutherland Munro wasn’t just any young Scotsman, he was the son of General Sir Hector Munro, commander-in-chief of India. Gen. Munro was a rising star and key player in the East India Company’s effort to subjugate India. He was the bitter enemy of Tipu Sultan, ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. As a field commander, Gen. Munro led the battle in which Tipu’s father, Sultan Hydar Ali, was killed. For all of his brief lifetime and reign, Tipu was locked in a life-or-death struggle against the British. Two of Tipu’s sons were taken as diplomatic hostages to coerce his cooperation. Adopting the emblem of the tiger to represent his strength and ferocity, Tipu Sultan fought back, winning victories, and became known as the Tiger of Mysore. When word arrived of Munro’s death, it is believed to have inspired court artisans to create an extraordinary life-size automaton of a tiger mauling a British soldier. The internal mechanisms included both movement and sounds of the struggle, with anguished cries and roaring to delight the Sultan. By mid-1793, news of Munro’s savaging reached the London papers. The tale spread quickly and was published many times over. The burgeoning mass media had found perfect material to

Circular 1946 McColl-Frontenac Double-Sided Porcelain Sign Brings $35,400 Online-Only Petroliana, Advertising Signs And Memorabilia Sale Held By Miller & Miller A 1930s Canadian Eco Model 160 clockface gasoline pump and a circular 1946 McColl-Frontenac doublesided porcelain sign, also from Canada, each realized $35,400 in an online-only Petroliana, Advertising Signs and Memorabilia auction held Dec. 4 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. based in New Hamburg, Ontario. Prices

The rare 1930s Canadian Eco Model 160 clockface gasoline pump with original reverse painted glass dials and the correct nozzle marked, “Service Station Equipment,” sold for $35,400.

reported are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. The rare, 1930s Canadian Eco Model 160 clockface gas pump with original reverse painted glass dials and the correct nozzle marked, “Service Station Equipment,” was the expected top lot of the auction, with a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$25,000. The clockface pump had had an older, professional restoration to the Texaco colors. The 1946 McCollFrontenac porcelain sign, 6 feet in diameter, marked “P&M-46” on the bottom, was expected to realize $12,000-$15,000, but aggressive bidding more than doubled the high estimate, Also, a 1930s Red Indian singlesided porcelain sign, also circular, 5 feet in diameter, marked “The W. F. Vilas Co. Limited, Cowansville, P.W.,” went for $27,140. Both signs were from Harron’s General Store in Elsinore, Ontario. Their slogan, “Call Elsinore, 424.” The 530-lot auction featured seldom-seen Canadian soda signs from the 40-year collection of James Burridge and the advertising collection of the late Dave Toccalino. The sale also boasted an offering of jukeboxes, gasoline pumps, toys and original memorabilia from the 1890s-1970s. Major categories included advertising signs, tins, general store, tobacciana, clocks, co-op, petroliana (gas station collectibles), automobilia (car collectibles) and breweriana.

“Most of the content in this sale had been tucked away in private collections for decades,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “Collectors jumped at the chance to own what they’d likely never see again. Condition has always been the great divider. Many of the top lots went to buyers who were investing in condition. Some of the numbers were staggering. Good soda advertising, good petroliana, it’s all on fire. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the end of it.” The auction, which attracted 519 registered bidders who placed a total of 11,973 bids, had a gross total of $568,789. Internet bidding

was via LiveAuctioneers.com and the Miller & Miller website at www.MillerandMiller Auctions.com. A circular 1957 Supertest double-sided porcelain sign, among Canada’s most iconic service station signs, 5 feet in diameter, marked “P&M Orillia 57,” with an overall condition grade of 8.25, changed hands for $11,800. A 1956 Seeburg (Chicago) model VL200 SelectO-Matic American jukebox, often referred to as “VL” or “The Cadillac of Jukeboxes,” operated via coin or a credit button, realized $6,490, while a 1930-era Canadian CocaCola single-sided tin sign, vertically produced at 54 inches

tall, marked “St. Thomas Metal Signs, Ltd., Ontario” and graded near-perfect at 9.25, commanded $7,375. Orange Crush signs proved to be hugely popular with collectors. A rare 1930s Canadian Orange Crush single-sided tin sign, 54 inches tall, graded 8.75, marked “St. Thomas Metal Signs, Ltd., Ontario,” realized $6,490. A 1930s Canadian Orange Crush single-sided tin vertical bottle sign, 53.25 inches tall, graded 8.5, marked “St. Thomas Metal Signs, Ltd., Ontario,” sold for $5,900, and an Orange Crush vertical single-sided tin bottle sign, this one 1940s American, with the iconic “Crushy” hoisting a crinkly brown bottle of

Orange Crush, graded 9.5, went for $5,310. Rounding out just a couple more top achievers from the sale, a Canadian PepsiCola double-dot vertical single-sided tin sign from the 1920s, showing the slogan, “Famous For Over 30 Years,” graded 8.5, fetched $5,900, and a Canadian 1940s singlesided tin sign advertising Black Cat Cigarettes, embossed and within a painted black wood frame, marked “CCC 53” (Continental Can Company), graded 7.5, reached $5,605. Frick

SEEKERS/SELLERS Goya, Holbein, Houdon, Ingres, Piero della Francesca, Rembrandt, Titian, Turner, Velázquez, Vermeer, Whistler, and many others) in this iconic space. The book features a reflective and absorbing foreword by author, social commentator, and contributing opinion writer for The New York Times Roxane Gay, who writes that the rehanging of the collection is “an opportunity to consider the work as exemplars of the times in which they were created,” as well as “an opportunity to consider the work in a modern context.” Also included in the book are a preface by Ian Wardropper, Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen director, and an essay by Xavier F. Salomon, deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp chief

curator, who discusses the vision behind presenting Frick holdings in a building that is also a work of art, as well as the process of reimagining the Frick in this way, against a backdrop of stone, concrete, and notable Marcel Breuer features. The temporary installation at Frick Madison marks the first time that a substantial number of works in the collection have been presented outside of their customary residential context. In a departure from the Frick’s usual presentation style, works are organized at Frick Madison loosely by chronology, geographic region, and media, offering opportunities for new insights and perspectives of beloved objects. The book demonstrates how comfortably and elegantly the museum’s treasures appear in this modernist space. Readers will enjoy the documentation of unprecedented displays, among them the placement of Bellini’s “St. Francis in the Desert,” considered by many to be the greatest Renaissance painting in America, in a chapel-like room of its own adjacent to one of Breuer’s trapezoidal windows. Fragonard’s Progress of Love series is now shown in its entirety and in its original sequence for the first time in more than 100 years. The book also illustrates the installation of lesser known but significant strengths in the Frick holdings, among these a room featuring 18thcentury French royal furniture and a gallery of rarely seen 17th-century Indian carpets. Photography also captures the current presentation of porcelain, shown arranged by color. The Frick Madison is at 945 Madison Ave., New York City. Met Breuer). With its home under renovation, the Frick has taken advantage of this strikingly different, unlikely setting to present a fresh take on its holdings. The Frick Madison installation, which received rave reviews upon debuting in March, is the subject of a newly released book, “Frick Madison: The Frick Collection at the Breuer Building.” The lavishly illustrated volume commemorates this singular moment in the museum’s history through texts and stunning photography.
