Selections From Bill du Pont Collection To Sell At Hess Auction Group’s Conestoga Auction Co. Sale Will Be Held In Manheim, Pa., On Jan. 29 William K. du Pont was born in Wilmington, Del. in 1938. He came by his love of Americana early on from having grown up with a father who collected. His childhood home

also happened to be located just a few minutes down the road from the famed Winterthur Museum & Library (then home of his cousin Henry F. du Pont). As an adult, Bill,

became a prolific collector of all sorts of Americana and served on the board of trustees of Winterthur for more than 40 years, at one time heading its Acquisitions Committee. He was an avid supporter of Winterthur, along with many other institutions, often generously donating objects or loaning pieces from his collection for exhibition. He tragically passed away in a tractor accident on July 4, 2021. Bill was also a voracious reader, outdoorsman, conservationist, and American history enthusiast. Over the course of roughly 60 years, he amassed a substantial reference library of over 1,500 books and hundreds of catalogues covering all manner of antique-related and historical subject matter, which has since been donated to Historic Trappe. Amazingly, Bill took the time to read each of these books and often made notations which he referred to, proof of his constant desire to learn more about the objects he collected and the people who made and used them. In addition to his appreciation of an antique for its intrinsic beauty, decorative attributes, or rarity, Bill was just as keenly interested in its construction and in the story and culture of the people involved. As a result of this genuine thirst for this understanding, he earned the reputation among his peers as one of the most knowledgeable collectors of early American decorative arts. Indeed, Bill curated each piece in his Rocky Hill collection personally and was very thoughtful about what he bought and why. Always a gracious host, he often welcomed

various museum and historical society groups to tour his home in Newark, Del. He loved for others to experience his collection and took any opportunity to educate those who showed an interest in American history or decorative arts. During frequent lunch outings to local restaurants near the University of Delaware campus, Bill would often bring along some small object from his collection with which to engage the younger generation and would relish any opportunity to explain its historical significance. In addition to his propensity to educate others about the material he collected, Bill was also what you’d call an authentic collector. He was such a purist that he even removed electric sconces from certain rooms in his home, in favor of more period candlelight. He also refused to use modern nails or hardware throughout his home. In addition, in the late 1980s he purchased and moved an 18th-century log house from Pennsylvania and had it reconstructed on his property. Many of the items featured in this sale were once housed there. For Bill it was always a thrill to find and acquire special new pieces, and he felt privileged to own each one. He eagerly anticipated every sale or upcoming show and what treasure he might discover. His hope would have been for anyone bidding on this collection to feel the same excitement about the material as he did. His collection will be sold at Sotheby’s on Saturday, Jan. 22. New Publication In Frick’s Popular Diptych Series Focuses On “Fragonard’s Progress Of Love” Text By Award-Winning Novelist Alan Hollinghurst Is Paired With An Essay By Xavier F. Salomon The Frick’s Diptych series continues this winter with a volume on “Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s Progress of Love,” a remarkable ensemble of paintings that is a jewel in the crown of the museum’s collection. Each of the seven books in this popular series brings a fresh perspective to a Frick artwork by pairing an art-historical essay with a text by a contemporary cultural figure. In this

instance, Xavier F. Salomon, deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp chief curator, illuminates the intriguing story of how these exuberant 18thcentury paintings were created. As a complement, the award-winning novelist, poet, and short-story writer Alan Hollinghurst offers a lyrical essay centered on the lush and evocative backdrops that dominate each major picture.

“The timing couldn’t be better for a renewed discussion of the Fragonard panels. Long beloved by those visiting the museum buildings on 70th Street, which are under renovation, the works are currently installed in a striking manner at Frick Madison, our temporary home. On the fourth floor of Marcel Breuer’s modernist building, the full set of 14 Fragonard panels is shown

in its entirety for the first time in more than 100 years and in a historically accurate configuration not possible at the mansion. In this orientation, and through this new Diptych publication, our understanding of Fragonard’s masterpiece is greatly enriched,” commented Salomon. Roan Inc. Holds Annual Pre-Christmas Sale Big Two-Day Sale Took Place On Dec. 17 And 18 We lost our father and mentor, Rich, in May of 2017 and our brother, Rick, this past October. Our family can identify with the loss of icons in the business such as Philip Bradley, Carl Stinson and Peter Tillou, among others. We did business with all three, and they were genuinely nice guys. I read a recent mention of Carl and agreed wholeheartedly with the writer stating how he always shared his knowledge and wisdom, much like my dear dad always did. Dealer Kelly Kinzle once said to me, “The auction business will always be viable and necessary regardless of the economy, yet like most businesses will have its ups and downs.” We are so grateful for our

friends and colleagues in times such as this and hope to have a good year ahead continuing to make a living doing what we love. Roan Inc.’s annual two-day pre-Christmas auction held Dec. 17 and 18 offered a range of quality antiques and decorative arts garnered from all over Pennsylvania and New York, but much of the two-day presentation came right out of their own neighboring backyard of Williamsport, Pa. The family-owned and operated business has been going for the past 76 years, in its original location in the village of Cogan Station, Pa. The Roan family has traditionally presented their pre-Christmas auction for the past 50-plus years, putting together a quality showing pleasing dealers

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: A Snowy Day Means Time For Some Housekeeping

By Peter Seibert It’s a snowy day here in the Mid-Atlantic. The kids and I are home from school, and before we go stir crazy, I think its time to look at the collection. We all tend to ignore the paperwork side of our antiques collections with the result that often we get caught needing something

and not being able to find it. I have seen collections that are beautifully documented with catalogue sheets and photographs of every item. Truly, I applaud the collectors who do that, and I am envious of them. They have all the receipts and scan and keep those as well. Those are wonderful collectors, and such actions help not only now but also down the road when their collections may return to the market. I recall the sale of Clarke Hess, who was a scholar of the Mennonite communities in Lancaster County. He kept detailed notes on his collection that helped in cataloging items for sale after his passing. For me, this snow day will be a day to update the

inventory lists and try and make notes on some items. I try and keep track of everything, not because I am selling it all but simply to be sure that in all the moves things have not gone astray. Somewhere out there in a landfill is a wonderful Indian carved and painted plaque that got wrapped so well when we moved that I am sure it was discarded with the other wrapping paper. Another important task for me on this day will be to start doing some research on a few items in my collection. Like many of you, I have a membership in Ancestry.com, which is a great resource for those of you chasing not only your own family tree but also in researching makers and users of items in your

collection. Very intuitive to use, I find the site to be a fast way to speed check an item that I need to research. In particular, with military records I can often validate someone’s service record very quickly. So this afternoon, I may dive into researching some of the inscriptions on various items that I own in the hopes of figuring out who owned them. A final part of updating the collection is to bring my daughters into the process. I want them to be able to see the collection and understand more about it. They will someday inherit the responsibility for caring for the items, and so it is important that they have some understanding of what it all is. We have all heard the stories

of the collector who unexpectedly passed, and the children, who never learned anything, sold the collection for pennies on the dollar. Another scenario is the person who inherits the collection and thinks it is worth a fortune. They spend years trying to sell it for top dollar only to be frustrated by the lack of interest. Bitter and angry, they either horde the items forever or dump them to anyone who will give them a patient ear. So take some time on these snowy winter days and do some research, update your inventories and maybe share your collection with your family. It’s great fun and is important to do for you and the collection.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

This magnificent specimen, with solidly crystallized silver except for a small association of crude copper off one end, was from the collection of German dealer and collector Dr. Hans Jürgen Wilke. Two gold nuggets reached $31,250. One, from the Ganes Creek Mine, weighs 260 grams and is highly aesthetic for an Alaskan nugget, boasting the typical brassy-golden coloration diagnostic of gold from the state. The other, from the famed Bendigo Fields in Australia, is even larger, weighing in at 350 grams. Its overall beauty is a combination of its impressive size, complemented by high luster and bright golden-yellow hue. For complete results, visit www.HA.com/8068.

The beauty and scale of the nugget is hard to quantify. Considering the fact that the majority of the world’s mined gold is refined and that even a one-ounce nugget is exceptionally rare, the Centennial Nugget weighs more than 20 pounds, over 322 ounces. “It is difficult to come up with the superlatives to fully explain the significance of this nugget,” said Heritage Auctions Nature

Columbia River Gorge By Amy Gale The Columbia River Gorge is one of the great beauty spots of the Pacific Northwest. America’s fourth largest river flows through an 80-mile canyon of precipitous cliffs, majestic fir trees, and pounding waterfalls. All that sublime landscape was lost on the pioneers who embarked on leaky rafts nearly two centuries ago. To them, it was a treacherous waterway, the final ordeal on the Oregon Trail. “Rained most all day,” wrote one pioneer mother in 1847. The next day’s journal, “Rainy day.” And so on, until the entry which reads, “Rain all day. This day my dear husband died.” Those hardships were remote to the day-trippers cruising up and down the river in steamboats a generation later. The future of the gorge as a tourist destination was in place by the late 19th century. The river was politically important because it formed the border between Oregon and Washington, and it was a vital link to the inland farms and orchards. But any development would have to take into account the value of its natural wonders. In 1913, construction began on the Columbia River Highway. It was located on the north bank and incorporated the latest advances in engineering with an appreciation for the picturesque. The intention was not purely aesthetic. “We will cash in, year after year, on our crop of scenic beauty, without depleting it in any way,” said Sam Hill, who was president of the Washington State Good Roads Association. The highway attracted a following among nature lovers in the 1920s, when it was described as the “the

for a president. By establishing a permanent collection of furniture and art, they also created a museum for all Americans. Their restoration awakened an interest in historic preservation and interior design that is still felt today. The project resulted in a televised tour of the White House that became the most watched program in American history. “The television tour fascinated generations of Americans and sealed Jacqueline Kennedy in our national imagination as the first lady who brought history and beauty to the White House,” according to guest curator Elaine Rice Bachmann. Through artifacts, archives, and images, the exhibition invites visitors to experience the behind-the-scenes collaboration between the two during this captivating period in American history. Visitors will learn about the relationship between Mrs. Kennedy and Mr. du Pont, her visit to Winterthur in May 1961, Winterthur’s role in inspiring the design of the White House’s most iconic rooms, the historical significance of the restoration, and the important role Winterthur has played at the White House ever since. “H. F. du Pont’s role in the Kennedy restoration of the White House positions Winterthur and its influence on American preservation and interiors at the center of this story,” said Alexandra Deutsch, the John L. and Marjorie P. McGraw Director of Collections at Winterthur. “Mrs. Kennedy’s iconic visit to Winterthur launched her on a path of creating the White House we know today. The interiors of the museum helped shape that lasting vision, which she enacted in just three short years.” To learn more, visit www.winterthur.org.

In 1961, the youngest first lady in American history appointed a reserved octogenarian collector from Delaware to lead her project to restore the White House interiors. The exhibition “Jacqueline Kennedy and Henry Francis du Pont: From Winterthur to the White House” will tell the story of this historic partnership for the first time at Winterthur, the inspiration for Mrs. Kennedy’s project. The exhibition will run May 7 to Jan. 8, 2023. When Mrs. Kennedy moved into the most famous house in America, she described its drab interior as a combination of “dentist office and bomb shelter.” Her vision, aided by her sense of chic, was to restore a sense of history through beautiful design. Henry Francis du Pont’s expertise in design and decorative arts lent credibility to the project. Together, they transformed the White House from a mere public residence into a home of grandeur and historic significance suitable

Columbia River Gorge The Maryhill Museum (it was named after his daughter) is a testament to Hill’s friendships with powerful women. The principal gallery is devoted to the furniture and regalia of Marie of Romania. The queen was not only the star attraction at the dedication, she supplied many of the exhibits. The tables and chairs made by Romanian craftsman in the medieval Byzantine style beloved by the queen are on view. So too are Fabergé odds and ends, the Russian icons, and the gown she wore to the coronation of her cousin, the Russian Czar Nicholas II. Some things she donated directly to the museum. Others she gave to Spreckels, who later donated them to the museum. The layered provenance is also reflected in the collection of Rodin’s sculpture and works on paper. Many were acquired by Hill through Fuller, though some were donated directly by Fuller. The fin de siècle collections include Art Nouveau glass from Spreckels. Spreckels, ever curious and receptive, also acquired for the museum the Théâtre de la Mode, the French fashion mannequins that toured America after World War II, promoting Parisian haute couture. When Spreckels died in 1968, the Maryhill Museum was a remote stronghold of French art. From Goldendale, you can

campsites and family motels to high-end, reservationrequired establishments. Amy Gale is the author of Shows, Shops and Auctions (Witlings Press, 2013). This is a view of the Maryhill Museum of Art from the south, photo courtesy of Nayland Wilkins.

Continued from page 4

In thanks for Hill’s help, the queen agreed to attend the dedication of his museum in 1926. The ceremony was one stop on her 50-day tour of America. It was an extraordinary occasion that brought together the incongruous quartet of royalty, business, and bohemia. Hill, Fuller, and Spreckels joined the queen on her private train for the last part of her journey to Goldendale. The occasion was also extraordinary because there was no museum. There was an unfinished and empty house. Hill was a showman, not a connoisseur. What really mattered was securing the queen’s attendance at the ceremony. The locals had never seen anything like it. The gratin of Portland society came, as did a convoy of local people from miles around. The “curious and interesting building” (the queen’s words) was decorated with bunting and flags, and there was a red carpet borrowed from a Portland hotel. A certain skepticism can be inferred from one reporter’s use of quotation marks around “Museum of Fine Arts.” Indeed, the museum opened to the public only in 1940, nine years after Hill’s death. By then, Fuller and Queen Marie had also died. Spreckels, the sole survivor, was an active trustee and generous donor.

“The Progress of Love” were commissioned in 1771 for Madame du Barry, to be installed in 1772 in a pavilion outside Paris built for her by her lover, Louis XV. By 1773, the canvases, “The Pursuit,” “The Meeting,” “The Lover Crowned,” and “Love Letters,” had been rejected by Du Barry and returned to the artist. In 1790, Fragonard moved them to his cousin’s house, Villa Maubert, in Grasse. Over the course of a year, he painted 10 additional panels, two largescale works, “Love Triumphant” and “Reverie,” four narrow “strips” depicting hollyhocks, and four overdoors of putti. Sold in 1898 to the dealer Agnew’s, the works were next installed in the London home of collector J. P. Morgan. In 1915, the series was purchased for Henry Clay Frick and brought the following year to his new Fifth Avenue mansion, now the core building of The Frick Collection. Strongly identified with the museum that bears the name of Henry Clay Frick, these works signal a noteworthy turning point in his

collection. Until that date, Frick had primarily purchased Old Masters of the British, Dutch and Flemish, and Italian schools, with a few examples of Spanish paintings. His interest in French art was confined to 19th-century works by artists who were almost his contemporaries, those of the Barbizon school and Impressionists. The creation of the Fragonard Room and the transformation of the family Drawing Room into an 18th-century French set piece marked the beginning of an important series of acquisitions by Henry Clay Frick and subsequent trustees. The Frick Diptych series is published by The Frick Collection in association with D Giles Ltd., London, sold online through the Museum Shop at www.frick.org/shop or This is the cover of “Fragonard’s Progress of Love,” photo courtesy Joseph Coscia Jr. by emailing sales@frick.org.
