The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) in Chester County, Pa., is pleased to announce the opening of “One Object, Many Stories: Esherick’s Music Stand,” on view in the museum’s visitor center beginning Thursday, March 2, and running until May 14.

Each object in the collection of the Wharton Esherick Museum, from major pieces of sculpture and furniture to the unassuming ephemera hidden in drawers and cabinets, holds within it myriad stories. “One Object, Many Stories” offers a deep dive into one of Esherick’s most well known sculptural furniture forms: the music stand.

Esherick created the music stand for Rose Rubinson, who, along with her husband, Nathan (Nat), was one of Esherick’s most significant patrons in the 1950s and 1960s. Their friendship is just one of the narratives explored in “One Object, Many Stories.” Others include Esherick’s stylistic language, influences, process, and context at mid-century; how the music stand became the impetus for new designs for Esherick; and the use of this object in several exhibitions, both domestic and international, that would define Esherick’s career and legacy.

Complimenting the display of Esherick’s prototype music stand is a selection of archival materials and sketches. As important patrons whose friendship with Esherick lasted for three decades, the Rubinsons feature heavily among the stories explored. One sketch by Esherick captures the closeness of their relationship, a quick and colorful cartoon of Rose asleep at her cello beside the

music stand, the three legs of which are braced by a triangular shelf holding a drink, with a note, “This will never happen if the lower shelf is properly used.” Esherick insisted the music stand shelf was not to hold

Rose’s musical paraphernalia, but “for a little snifter in case you feel faint during a performance.”

Geoffrey Berwind, grandson of Nat and Rose and a member of the museum’s board of directors, is also

featured among the music stand’s many stories. The prototype music stand is on view in “One Object, Many Stories” through the generosity of Berwind, who sees WEM as the work’s natural home, and its return as a homecoming to the site where it was made. “We are not only thrilled to have the opportunity to share this wonderful work with our visitors,” said WEM Director of Curatorial Affairs and Strategic Partnerships Emily Zilber, “but also to honor the continued involvement of the Rubinson/Berwind Family in preserving and celebrating Esherick’s legacy since the museum’s founding in 1972.”

The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) is the home and studio of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), an artistic polymath and foundational figure in 20th-century contemporary craft and American Modern design. Wharton Esherick is widely credited as the founder of the Studio Furniture Movement and was present at many of the landmark events which shaped the field of contemporary craft on an international level. Esherick worked primarily in wood and extended his unique forms to furniture, furnishings, interiors, buildings, and more. His motto, “If it isn’t fun, it isn’t worth doing,” is evident in the joyful expression of his work. A National Historic Landmark for Architecture, his hilltop studio/residence has been preserved much as it was when the artist lived and worked there.

The museum is located at 1520 Horse Shoe Trail, Malvern, Pa.

For industry insiders, the wait is over. In its 14th year, the Asheford Institute’s annual survey of top decorative arts buying trends from the past 12 months has just made its way onto both digital and paper newsstands across the country.

The international survey/poll of past students and graduates from the Institute has become a staple to many in the antique and vintage industry for its unique ability to look into the current state of today’s decorative arts marketplace, as it relates to overall sales trends for dealers working within the collecting community.

Anthony Harper, the school’s lead researcher, says the key to getting meaningful survey results that businesses and people can use to help plan their inventory-buying strategies for the upcoming year is based on receiving sales data, alongside itemspecific requests from buyers, which can then be used to indicate interest within a particular collecting genre.

As with virtually all business this past year, Harper says ongoing supply-chain issues continued to have an effect on almost every segment of the economy, including certain genres within the decorative arts field. “In 2021, we were all still recovering from Covid, but this past year, buyers, dealers, and collectors were out en masse, in-person, and were literally snapping up everything in sight.” Harper says that by the end of summer, many dealers were complaining about a lack of available and

affordable inventory. “It wasn’t just one category of collectible,” according to Harper, “it was virtually anything, from folk art to baseball cards.”

Similar tales have surfaced in previous years, but Harper says those scenarios were not close to the severe shortage of available stock that many antique and vintage dealers faced in 2022. Harper believes that some collecting categories in this year’s poll may have risen or fallen not necessarily because of a lack of popularity but because of a lack of stable inventory. However, he does acknowledge one upside to all the market uncertainty: for most dealers, sale prices rose sharply.

For Amber Shole, who’s been compiling survey statistics for over 11 years, the most striking change in poll results this year was also related to price. “Item listing values skyrocketed in virtually every area,” she said, “and dealers took advantage by holding firm on prices.” Fan favorites like Art Deco and textiles continued to boom says Shole,

while other perennial favorites such as MidCentury Modern began to show signs of weakening. “There’s definitely a shift,” she says, “it’s just a matter of being able to pick up on those markers before they become full-fledge trends.”

In other areas of the survey, there were also some pleasant surprises, as once again an unexpected (but familiar) era of collecting shot back up the charts to a respectable placement for the first time in over 25 years. The cause? Well, according to Shole, it’s all about a younger generation that’s turned frugal-collector. “Young people are looking for inexpensive, eco-friendly choices and sustainability,” says Shole, “and the antique and vintage market is giving them that.” Shole believes that the creation of new trends in the decorative

arts market is more of a symbiotic relationship than anything else. “Millennials and Gen-Zer’s need something, and we’re able to supply it to them,” she says, “and it’s that practical aspect that’s driving the creation of some of these new trends.”

For readers seeking the complete 2022 listing of all the best-selling antique and vintage genres and categories contained within the school’s yearly poll and survey, you can find the full results (including this year’s winner) by visiting the Institute’s website at www.asheford.com/ashefordnews-ticker-headlines/topselling-antique-vintage-categories-of-2022-released.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert

This Week: Old School Antiques Dealing: Chapter I

I have been spending a lot of time in antiques malls lately. It’s always great for me to do as I get to see many items, hunt for a few treasures of my own, and also look to see what is out there. As someone who has gone to antiques malls on a regular basis over the years, I have watched the rise and fall and rise again of this segment of the business.

Many years ago, I remember when the mall phenomenon was young and new. Dealers would come together and rent space in a building for a cooperative store. The model evolved around either straight payment of rent by booth owners or sweat equity where each dealer had to work a set

number of days selling for everyone in the mall. There were infinite variations to this, but the model seemed to stick. It was a way for part-time dealers to test the waterso although more often than not those newbies did not last very long in the business. If they priced things too high, they soon quit in disgust over a lack of sales. If they priced low and sold too much, they quit after a time because they could not replenish their stock. It was only the dealer who had the fortitude and long-term game face who could make it in a mall.

The mall phenomenon in the 1980s and 1990s centered around three communities in central Pennsylvania. Hershey had My Wife’s Antiques and later Zieglers (in town and out in the country). Carlisle had Northgate I and Northgate II along with the relocated Antiques World from the old automobilarama building on Route 15. New Oxford had a group of shops and then cooperatives that changed a good bit over the years. There were others, but it was that circuit, outside of the shops in Adamstown, that seemed to attract most of the dealers.

My mother and I went into both Zieglers and Antiques

World at different times during that period. We learned a lot selling there and saw some great items. I still recall an insanely original Pennsylvania National Guard tunic complete with all insignia and even a broadside about a muster event in the pocket.

This was the time when any crock, particularly if made by Cowden & Wilcox, was an easy $100. Currier & Ives, copper lusterware, and pattern glass filled out the malls. We would go to a country sale in Perry, Union or Dauphin counties on Friday night or Saturday morning and then restock on Sundays. The big worries were not about a lack of antiques but rather about changes in taste. My old friend, Elsie Doehne (Doehne’s Oxbow Shop in Harrisburg), told me that pattern glass was dead because modern dishwashers would destroy it!

The fakes that we saw were pretty clumsy by a modern standard. Jumbo pattern glass was a good example. Cranked out as reproductions, it was easy to tell both by the softness of details and that there was no wear on the bottoms.

We did not sell much furniture, only because Mom drove a two-door car, and so

The Doylestown Arts Festival is proud to promote Doylestown and Bucks County on a national level, including putting a spotlight on Doylestown’s art and cultural district. wash stands were about all there was that would fit in the back. We bought lots of ugly chairs, as I recall, and most of them sold. Victorian and then Mission were both hot thanks to Barbra Streisand and other collectors.

It was a crazy time of too much money and a lot of stuff in the antiques world. Next column, the show circuit and how far the money would go.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

and Cultural Partners are open through April 8.

Home to over 8,000 residents as well as the Michener Art Museum, Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle, TileWorks, County Theater, and a robust array of galleries, restaurants, and locally-owned shops and boutiques, Doylestown is recognized as a destination town. The Doylestown Arts Festival is made possible by a small volunteer committee of Discover Doylestown and is presented by the Thompson Organization. Four-Day Auction “Pike’s Peak Or Bust” Named To Honor Great Colorado Gold Rush Of 1859

Collectibles Included Bottles, Railroadiana, Native Americana, Mining, Numismatics, Art, Stocks And Militaria

A ten-dollar 1902 red seal banknote from The Farmers & Merchants National Bank in Reno, Nev., sold for $12,500, a runaway slave broadside from 1862 brought $8,750, and a ca. 1868 lime green Dr. Boerhaave’s Stomach Bitters bottle finished at $8,435 at a four-day auction held Jan. 19 to 22, live and online, by Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC. in Reno, Nev.

The auction, officially titled “Pike’s Peak or Bust,” was full of Western Americana, bottles, numismatics and more, was named in honor of the great Colorado Gold Rush of 1859 and featured a healthy dose of Colorado and Western states material, plus collectibles in many categories.

The 1902 Farmers & Merchants National Bank $10

red seal note was the second finest known of just the five red seals reported on the bank.

It was PMG graded Very Fine 20, with some minor restorations on the reverse, but red seals are rare and coveted by collectors in any condition. It was signed by W. J. Harris and president Richard Kirman, the only president the bank ever had.

The folded slave broadside, dated Sept. 28, 1852, offered “a liberal reward for the apprehension of (two) Negroes, who ran away Saturday night, the 21st, having stolen fifty dollars in money and a large lot of clothing.” The runaways were women: Eliza (in her 20s, “well made, rather on the slender side”) and Fanny (about 50 and “fond of smoking”).

The ca. 1868 Dr. Boerhaave’s Stomach Bitters bottle with an applied top, 8.74 inches tall, was one of “probably less than six known” (Wichmann, 1999). Little is known about this scarce Western bitters bottle. Other examples of just the handful known are amber and yellow-olive. The one sold is possibly the only dark green lime one extant.

The sale was held live and online via iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and

Auctionzip.com. Phone and absentee bids were also accepted. Prices include buyer’s premium.

Day one featured 514 lots of general Americana, which included cowboy items, sports, books and toys.

The runaway slave broadside was the top lot of the session, but other items included a City of Tombstone, Arizona, business license, dated Aug. 1, 1881 (two months before the shoot-out at the OK Corral), and issued to the Peck Bros. (for “Peddlers”), signed by Town Marshall Virgil Earp (Wyatt’s brother) ($3,250), and A McLellan model 1885 cavalry saddle with an A.D. Laidley Ordinance inspection stamp, complete with tack, ($2,625). A.D. Laidley inspected leather goods for the U.S. Ordinance Dept. from the Civil War through the Indian Wars.

Day two had 546 lots of transportation (railroad and steamer passes and transportation ephemera) and bottles and saloon (featuring Colorado whiskey and medicines).

The Dr. Boerhaave’s Stomach Bitters bottle was the top achiever. Also sold was a tan-colored jug for the “Bountiful Co-Operative / Mercantile Institution / Bountiful, Utah,” with base chips but no apparent cracks ($3,625), as well as a near-mint, unlisted variant of a Preble (J 32) Old Kentucky Liquor House (Cripple Creek, Colo.) slope shoulder stoneware jug, scarce, ($3,500).

An autograph letter dated April 14, 1829, and signed by Peter Haywood, whose naval career was clouded by the misfortune of being a 16-yearold seaman aboard the merchant vessel HMS Bounty at the time of her famous mutiny in 1789, rose to $5,625. Also, a United Verde & Pacific Railway Company pass No. 103, issued to W.C. Potts for the year 1900 and signed by W.A. Clark (one of the “Copper Kings” or mining millionaires of Montana),

sold for $1,062.

Day three was filled with 533 lots of art, Native Americana, political collectibles, militaria, firearms and weaponry, minerals and mining, and stocks and bonds. Two American Express Co. stock certificates, one dated June 16, 1862, and signed by Henry Wells as president and William G. Fargo as treasurer, and one dated Sept. 11, 1877, and signed by Fargo as secretary, sold as one lot for $1,437. Guggenheim Museum Presents “Young Picasso In Paris”

Part Of The Picasso Celebration 1973–2023, Exhibition Will Feature “Le Moulin de la Galette”

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, “Young Picasso in Paris” will highlight a defining work, “Le Moulin de la Galette” (ca. Nov. 1900), from the Guggenheim collection. One of his first

paintings executed in Paris, and sold by the artist shortly thereafter, “Le Moulin de la Galette” isalso the subject of an extensive conservation analysis and

treatment project that will be unveiled with the exhibition. The famous dance hall, formerly a mill engaged in the

Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is one of the great beauty spots of the Pacific Northwest. America’s fourth largest river flows through an 80-mile canyon of precipitous cliffs, majestic fir trees, and pounding waterfalls.

All that sublime landscape was lost on the pioneers who embarked on leaky rafts nearly two centuries ago. To them, it was a treacherous waterway, the final ordeal on the Oregon Trail. “Rained most all day,” wrote one pioneer mother in 1847. The next day’s journal, “Rainy day.” And so on, until the entry which reads, “Rain all day. This day my dear husband died.”

Those hardships were remote to the day-trippers cruising up and down the river in steamboats a generation later. The future of the gorge as a tourist destination was in place by the late 19th century. The river was politically important because it formed the border between Oregon and Washington, and it was a vital link to the inland farms and orchards. But any development would have to take into account the value of its natural wonders.

In 1913, construction began on the Columbia River Highway. It was located on the north bank and incorporated the latest advances in engineering with an appreciation for the picturesque. The intention was not purely aesthetic. “We will cash in, year after year, on our crop of scenic beauty, without depleting it in any way,” said Sam Hill, who was president of the Washington State Good Roads Association.

The highway attracted a following among nature lovers in the 1920s, when it was described

as the “the finest scenic drive in the world.” Best of all, it was paved. You can still dawdle along the old Columbia Highway. The road hugs the woodsy crags. Waterfalls swing into view. In the

distance is Mount Hood.

Alternatively, there is Interstate 84, the “new” road, which follows the river. The route is efficient and gives the visitor a close view of the Columbia. The

fearsome wind that made navigation so perilous is felt close to the riverbank.

The choice of road depends, in part, on the size of your car. The hilly and meandering twolane highway was designed in the era of the Model T, while the interstate is suited to the larger modern vehicle.

Scenically, the western half of the gorge is the more

rewarding. Keep pushing east, past the rain shadow, and the topography changes. Now you’re driving by grassy dry lands. The views are less magnificent, though, by way of compensation, the region is home to many wineries.

Continued from page 7 social and architectural ambitions. It was decided to build an observatory that would also serve to be a memorial to the pioneers. An architect was hired. The costs rose. According to the Taxpayers League, it was the most expensive comfort station ever built.

For the visitor limited to a morning excursion, Multnomah Falls and Crown Point Vista House are the principal sights. Both can be reached from Portland in less than one hour.

The falls are drive-offthe-road beautiful. The prudent thing to do is park the car and walk the short trail to the pedestrian bridge located halfway up the 600foot drop. More arduous trails are open to the adventurous. For the hungry and sedentary, there is Multnomah Lodge, a restaurant with waterfall views. The stone structure was built in the 1920s, and that time is evoked in the plain and comfortable dining room with a wood-burning hearth.

Less than ten miles away is the Vista House at Crown Point, which offers a panoramic view of the gorge. The experience is visually and physically powerful. Because of the wind, the small and frail need to be securely moored to the terrace.

The origins of the lookout were practical; there was the need, in those early days, for a rest stop to accommodate the many motoring parties. The absence of facilities was felt to be a hardship for the ladies. A wood and concrete structure was planned.

Rapidly, though, the project grew to accommodate a host of

The planning and construction coincided with the last years

and the prehistoric prototype. For one, the Neolithic builders did not have the convenience of working with poured concrete. Then there is the terrain. The Goldendale Stonehenge is set amidst rolling sagebrush and cloudless blue sky.

Nearby is Hill’s house. It is a chateau-like structure made of concrete, Hill’s medium of choice. Hill never realized his grand plans for its furnishing and equipment. His financial losses brought construction to a halt in 1917.

the war. Sympathy was strong for Romania, an allied country that suffered under German occupation. It was the occasion for Fuller to introduce Spreckels to Queen Marie while Spreckels introduced Fuller to Hill. It was also the occasion for Hill to renew his acquaintance with Queen Marie. The queen’s American friends were active fundraisers. In 1919, one year after the war ended, Hill traveled on a supply ship to Romania.

of World War I. While farmers and businessmen were protesting the price of the mahogany stall doors, soldiers in France were suffering the horrors of trench warfare.

A monument to the local men who died in the war is in the town of Goldendale, at the eastern end of the gorge. It is a fullscale replica of Stonehenge. When the site was dedicated in 1918, it was erroneously believed that the original Stonehenge had been built for human sacrifice.

“Humanity is still being sacrificed to the Gods of war” was the message of Sam Hill, who commissioned the monument. There are, of course, differences between this Stonehenge

That the house should be turned into a museum came at the suggestion of Loie Fuller, an American avant-garde dancer. Fuller was at the center of the circle of larger-than-life characters who befriended the frontier eccentric. She enjoyed an intense and controversial friendship with the alluring Queen Marie of Romania. The queen appreciated Fuller’s experiments with lighting and costume. In turn, her artistic and literary efforts were encouraged by Fuller.

Another friend was Alma de Bretteville Spreckels, the San Francisco artist’s model who married a sugar magnate. The basis for this friendship was the sculpture of Auguste Rodin. Fuller was a promoter and agent for the artist. She introduced Rodin to Spreckels, who went on to form a large collection of his work.

Hill was a Quaker, though his morals were more “friendly” than Society of Friends. There was a Mrs. Hill, but she was a shadowy figure who does not seem to have played an important role in his life. He was at ease with these unconventional women.

The web of friendship was strengthened and completed by

In thanks for Hill’s help, the queen agreed to attend the dedication of his museum in 1926. The ceremony was one stop on her 50-day tour of America. It was an extraordinary occasion that brought together the incongruous quartet of royalty, business, and bohemia. Hill, Fuller, and Spreckels joined the queen on her private train for the last part of her journey to Goldendale.

The occasion was also extraordinary because there was no museum. There was an unfinished and empty house. Hill was a showman, not a connoisseur. What really mattered was securing the queen’s attendance at the ceremony. The locals had never seen anything like it. The gratin of Portland society came, as did a convoy of local people from miles around. The “curious and interesting building” (the queen’s words) was decorated with bunting and flags, and there was a red carpet borrowed from a Portland hotel.

A certain skepticism can be inferred from one reporter’s use of quotation marks around “Museum of Fine Arts.” Indeed, the museum opened to the public only in 1940, nine years after Hill’s death. By then, Fuller and Queen Marie had also died. Spreckels, the sole survivor, was an active trustee and generous donor.

The Maryhill Museum (it was named after his daughter) is a testament to Hill’s friendships with powerful women. The principal gallery is devoted to the furniture and regalia of Marie of Romania. The queen was not only the star attraction at the dedication, she supplied many of the exhibits. The tables and chairs made by Romanian craftsman in the medieval Byzantine style beloved by the queen are on view. So too are Fabergé odds and ends, the Russian icons, and the gown she wore to the coronation of her cousin, the Russian Czar Nicholas II. Some things she donated directly to the museum. Others she gave to Spreckels, who later donated them to the museum.

The layered provenance is also reflected in the collection of Rodin’s sculpture and works on paper. Many were acquired by

Hill through Fuller, though some were donated directly by Fuller.

The fin de siècle collections include Art Nouveau glass from Spreckels. Spreckels, ever curious and receptive, also acquired for the museum the Théâtre de la Mode, the French fashion mannequins that toured America after World War II, promoting Parisian haute couture. When Spreckels died in 1968, the Maryhill Museum was a remote stronghold of French art.

From Goldendale, you can make the drive back to Portland in two hours. Even better, why not stay the night? There is plenty of accommodation throughout the gorge, ranging from campsites and family motels to high-end, reservation-required establishments.

sharper focus with his subsequent Blue Period (1901–04). The tragic suicide in Paris of Picasso’s close friend, the painter and poet Carles Casagemas, in February 1901, undeniably impacted this year of artistic and personal evolution as well. All told, his time in Paris left a strong impression; Picasso would settle there in 1904.

This exhibition is part of the Picasso Celebration 1973–2023 program, organized with the support of the Musée national Picasso, Paris.

About the Picasso Celebration 1973–2023

April 8, 2023, marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and thus the year will represent a

celebration of his work and his artistic legacy in France, Spain, and internationally. The French and Spanish governments wished to mark this transnational event through a binational commission, bringing together the cultural and diplomatic administrations of both countries. The Picasso Celebration 1973–2023 revolves around

some 50 exhibitions and events to be held at renowned cultural institutions in Europe and North America that, together, address a historiographical analysis of Picasso’s work.

The Guggenheim Museum is located at 1071 Fifth Ave. at 89th Street, New York, N.Y.
