Clement Clarke Moore’s (1779-1863) Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” illustrated by Mary Clarke Ogden (1819-93), belongs to the Morgan Library & Museum, gift of David D. Ogden family in honor of the Morgan’s centennial, 2024, MA23900, photo by Carmen Gonzalez Fraile, 2024.
Earliest Color Illustrated Manuscript Of Christmas Poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” Acquired
Rarity Enters Collection Of Morgan Library & Museum
The Morgan Library & Museum, 225 Madison Ave. New York, N.Y., has acquired the earliest manuscript with color illustrations of the poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” (more famously known as “The Night Before Christmas”) by Clement Clarke Moore. The book, illustrated by Moore’s daughter, Mary Clarke Moore Ogden, will be on view this holiday season in J. Pierpont Morgan’s Library along with the famous manuscript of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” from now until Jan. 5, 2025.
Clement Clarke Moore (17791863) wrote “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1822. It is believed that a family friend sent a copy of the poem to the Troy Sentinel newspaper in Troy, N.Y., which published it anonymously on Dec. 23, 1823. It was attributed to Moore in 1837. In the poem, Moore originated many of the features that are still associated with Santa Claus today.
This manuscript was illustrated
by Moore’s daughter, Mary Clarke Moore Ogden (1819-93), and given to her husband, John Doughty Ogden, as a Christmas present in 1855. The volume features the first color illustrations of the poem, set as miniature vignettes within the decorative border surrounding the text. On one of the pages she depicted the house in the Chelsea section of New York City where she and her eight brothers and sisters heard the poem recited by her father every Christmas. Other notable features include the original text of the poem’s second-tolast line, reading “Happy Christmas to all,” which would later be changed to “Merry Christmas to all.” The volume has long been treasured by the Ogden family. It was gifted to the museum by the family in recognition of the Morgan’s centennial.

“Charlotte Schatz: Industrial Strength” Exhibit Now On View
A new exhibition at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., is now open.
“Charlotte Schatz: Industrial Strength” celebrates a formidable artist, feminist, and social activist, who embraced industrial themes and materials typically associated with male artists in the second half of the 20th century.
Charlotte Schatz (1929-2023) was a sculptor and painter who lived and worked most of her professional life in Bucks County and taught sculpture and design at Bucks County Community College for 30 years. Schatz explored industrial forms through non-traditional materials and colorful, painted compositions that were considered unconventional for women artists at the time.
The James A. Michener Art Museum is located at 138 S. Pine St. in Doylestown, Pa. For additional information, visit www.michenerartmuseum.org.

Tiffany Studios is one of the most famous companies in the field of early 20th century decorative arts. On Nov. 18, Sotheby’s in New York City sold what is coined the “Danner Memorial Window” for a new auction record of $12.4 million.
The monumental stained glass window had been commissioned in 1913 for the First Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio. Named after founding members of the church, John and Terressa Danner, the presale estimate was $5,000,000 to $7,000,000.
“It’s a landmark moment for the Tiffany market,” explained Jodi Pollack, Sotheby’s head of 20th-century design, following the sale, “a moment that establishes Tiffany within the pantheon of the most iconic artists of the 20th century.”
The work was designed by Agnes Northrup, a Queens, N.Y., native who defied societal expectations by forgoing marriage and family to devote herself to her career. Louis Comfort Tiffany did not retain married women. After studying at the Flushing Institute, Northrup joined the company in the 1880s, both choosing and cutting glass as what was termed a “Tiffany Girl.” Within a decade, she’d been given her own studio and her landscape and garden designs would become intertwined with Tiffany’s aesthetic.
By the time of the commission, the studio held a worldwide reputation for both design and technique. Like other memorial pieces, the composition includes trees along a river and mountains in the background.

Samuel Slaymaker Retires As Executive Director Of Historic Rock Ford
After nearly 20 years of service, Historic Rock Ford announced the retirement of Samuel C. Slaymaker as its executive director. Since the beginning of his tenure in 2005, Slaymaker led the way in creating new and innovative programming that allowed visitors to connect with the life and times of Gen. Edward Hand. This programming included his adaptations of “Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Comes to Rock Ford,” “Emma, The Matchmaker,” and “Persuasion,” as well as “Tales from the Caretakers,” which explored over two centuries of haunted tales connected with Rock Ford. Slaymaker also oversaw the multi-year capital campaign to design, build and open Historic Rock Ford’s John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster Decorative Arts in 2021. He has also worked closely with the Collections Committee and Rock Ford curator Sarah Alberico to continue to improve the furnishings and interpretation of Rock Ford’s rooms so that they may more authentically represent their appearance during the time of the Hand Family residency.
“Sam has been a cornerstone of our organization, guiding us through numerous achievements and challenges with unwavering commitment and vision,” states Dana Lewis, president of the Board of Trustees of the Rock Ford Foundation. “His leadership has profoundly shaped Historic
Rock Ford, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”
Slaymaker has been granted the honorary title of director emeritus by the Board of Trustees. “In this new capacity, he will continue to be a valued source of wisdom and support, offering his insights and guidance as needed,” according to Lewis.
After a nationwide search, Historic Rock Ford is likewise delighted to announce the appointment of Christina H. McSherry, Ph.D. as its new executive director. Dr. McSherry brings a unique blend of expertise in historical archaeology and anthropology, paired

Would You Pay Over $6 Million For A Banana Duct Taped To A Wall?
By Shawn Surmick
things that appear average to most people can still sell for massive amounts.
“The Matrix” is arguably one of the greatest science-fiction films of the late 1990s. The intricate story about an average man who discovers that he is living in some sort of sinister computer simulation quickly became a pop culture phenomenon upon its release. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when the main character, Neo (played by Keanu Reeves), stumbles upon a boy who appears to be able to bend a spoon with his mind. Curiously, Neo looks at the boy in disbelief and the boy calmly declares, “There is no spoon. It is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.” In my opinion, this is a perfect metaphor for the business side of the antiques and collectibles trade.
Every single day objects are bought and sold for record sums of money that seem to baffle people who are not active in the trade. I am sure by now most people have seen buzz worthy mass media headlines talking about some rare coin, comic book, or baseball card that recently sold for record sums. Thanks to the rise of realitybased television shows centered on antiques and collectibles, even the general public can now recognize
In a previous article, published not too long ago, I talked about an excellent book that was written by Barbara Herrnstein Smith and published in 1988. The book was called “Contingencies of Value” where the author contends that value emerges as a result of ever changing and interacting variables. Value is never guaranteed or static in the antiques and collectibles trade. Today’s high price could be tomorrow’s low price and vice versa. There are no guarantees in any of these markets, they just are. But some prices paid for certain things push the boundaries as to what is acceptable. In those cases it is important to remember that there is no fixed price. The value is much like the spoon in “The Matrix.”
Case in point, on Nov. 21, Sotheby’s sold an interesting piece of art for well over $6 million that left the art world speechless. It was on this date that a work of art titled “Comedian” by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan hit the auction block. But make no mistake, “Comedian” was an art work like no other. You don’t even need a picture or any kind of visual aid to help readers understand what “Comedian” was and why this auction sale is generating so much buzz. It is, quite simply, a banana affixed to a white wall with silver duct tape. That’s it, and it sold for over $6 million. The day of the sale my email box was full of questions as to why and how someone would pay $6 million for a so-called art installation that consists of
a simple piece of fruit that will easily rot away, affixed to a plain white wall with some store bought duct tape. To answer the question in its simplest form using my favorite scene in “The Matrix,” there is no fruit or tape. You see, the buyer of the art in question is a well-known cryptocurrency entrepreneur, and he didn’t win the auction just to get the piece of rotten fruit and the used duct tape with his purchase. He also gets a certificate of authenticity that gives him the distinct permission to duct tape a banana to the wall and call it “Comedian.” It is this permission that the individual is spending $6 million on, along with the notoriety and fame of being able to spend over $6 million to do so. What is even more extraordinary about this story is that it is quite possible that this same piece of art could be sold again at a later date for even more than the $6 million this individual initially paid. Artists have long figured out that all art is subjective and, as a result, the value of a piece has more to do with how the piece of work is perceived. High-profile shock artist Banksy gained incredible fame back in 2018 when he created “Love Is in the Bin,” a piece of art that unexpectedly started to self-destruct in its original frame immediately after being sold at auction. It did this by way of having a hidden shredding mechanism implemented in the frame that no one knew existed. That particular piece sold for a little over $1.3 million originally and sold again in 2021 for well over $25 million due in part to the amount
of media coverage the piece received.
Artists have been creating these kinds of works for many years. Andy Warhol is one of my favorite contemporary artists, and he was known to poke fun at the art market from time to time. Warhol also took great pleasure in the money he made from his works of art, once declaring, “Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.” If you have ever seen the infamous Andy Warhol “Dollar Sign” paintings that premiered in 1982 you can see his desire to praise the relationship between art and its financial value.
That being said, if anyone is looking deeply at a work like “Comedian” and wondering just how long it must have taken for the artist to come up with this concept and profit from it, one must understand that the artist himself already had credibility in the art world to be able to pull this kind of work off. I am always amazed when a piece like this comes up for auction and someone outside the art world gleefully declares, “I could have produced that piece!” If I am within earshot of the person making this obvious declaration I usually have to hold back my sarcastic comment of, then why didn’t you? To be fair, I fully understand the disdain, but I also understand the art market too. To anyone wanting to attempt to re-create this piece and attempt to sell it, you have your work cut out for you that’s for sure. This is because the buyer didn’t just buy a banana and some cheap duct tape. And it

Major Exhibition Of Works
By John Singer Sargent Planned To Coincide With The 100th Anniversary Of The Artist’s Death
“Sargent And Paris” Will Include 100 Works Of Art
Opening at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 21, 2025, “Sargent and Paris” will explore the early career of John Singer Sargent (born 1856, Florence; died 1925, London), from his arrival in Paris in 1874 as a talented 18-year-old art student through the mid-1880s, when his infamous portrait “Madame X” was a scandalous success at the Paris Salon. “Madame X” (Madame Pierre Gautreau) was done 1883-84 and is an oil on canvas belonging to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Arthur Hoppock Hearn Fund, 1916. Featuring a substantial collection of paintings, watercolors, and drawings, the exhibition will also include a select group of portraits by Sargent’s contemporaries. The exhibition is the largest international exhibition of Sargent’s work since 1998 and the first ever monographic exhibition of Sargent’s art in France. The exhibition is made possible by The Marguerite and Frank A. Cosgrove Jr. Fund. Additional support is provided by The Sam and Janet Salz Trust, Gregory Annenberg Weingarten, GRoW @ Annenberg, Angela A. Chao and Jim Breyer, and Trevor and Alexis Traina. “Sargent and Paris” is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.” This magnificent exhibition will shed new light on a transformative period in the life and career of one of America’s most important painters,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer. “By situating Sargent’s work within the context of the city that formed and inspired him, ‘Sargent and Paris’ will illuminate this influential artist’s meteoric rise, providing new insights into his unique talent and skill in capturing the vibrant society he inhabited.” “Sargent’s career was indelibly shaped by the time he spent in Paris. Over the course of one remarkable decade, he created the boldest and most daring paintings of his oeuvre. Sargent and Paris’ will showcase these visually stunning and ambitious works, shedding new light on his distinctive artistic vision. We are thrilled to partner with the Musée d’Orsay to reunite this collection of great works in New York and Paris,” said Stephanie L. Herdrich, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Painting and Drawings at The Met. “Sargent and Paris” opens with the 18-year-old Sargent’s arrival in Paris in 1874 to pursue his ambition to become an artist. The precocious drawings and sketches that impressed his
fellow students in the atelier will be featured along with his evocative paintings of the French capital. Across the decade that followed, Sargent was immersed in a cosmopolitan circle of artists, writers, and patrons, as he navigated a successful path through the French exhibition system, achieving acclaim and awards. This
formative decade culminated with the portrait he later described as “the best thing I’ve done,” the infamous “Madame X.”
Over the course of this pivotal period, Sargent achieved increasing recognition with his bold, ambitious portraits and genre scenes. The style for which he is now

is vital that everyone questioning this sale and asking why understands this. I am confident crazier art installations will be sold and resold for much more money in the future just as long as capitalism continues to thrive. And rest assured the same media outlets that report on this piece will be reporting on them as well. Because at the end of the day, there really is no spoon. It can be whatever you want it to be and the market will determine just how much it sells for. Welcome to the art world!

a seasoned traveler from a young age, Sargent also found subjects through excursions in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and North Africa. Sargent soon excelled at creating flattering, if provocative, portraits that gratified his patrons and their desire for social status.
Sargent and Paris will examine the enduring fascination with society and celebrity that inspired the artist to create the now iconic “Madame X.” The exhibition will look in depth at the portrait, its creation, and the ensuing scandal, and for the first time ever, Sargent and Paris will reunite “Madame X” with its numerous preparatory drawings and paintings. A nearby gallery will display portraits of Parisiennes by the artists who inspired Sargent and with whom he competed for commissions and recognition, including his teachers Carolus-Duran and Léon Bonnat and artistic role models such as Édouard Manet.
The exhibition will present a nuanced understanding of the painting at the heart of a scandal that is as infamous now as it was in 1884 along with an appreciation for the originality and brilliance of Sargent’s art, underpinning the more sensational aspects of artistic society in 1880s Paris. Fully illustrated catalogues in English and French, with contributions from the exhibition’s curators and other leading scholars, will accompany the exhibition.
The Met will offer a variety of related art and educational programs, including a MetLiveArts event, to be announced at a later date.
“Sargent and Paris” will be featured on The Met’s website and Musée d’Orsay website as well as on social media.
