David Ellinger’s (1913-2003) “Amish School” is an 18-by-28-inch oil-on-canvas winter scene signed “D. Ellinger.” On Sunday, March 21, beginning at noon, Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio is yet again partnering with Invaluable.com to ring in the spring season with its fourth annual Fine American Paintings Sale and Live Online Auction event. The sale will present almost 100 lots of fine art by American and European artists. Included are a wide selection of impressionist, realist, folk art, modern, abstract and surrealist art, decorative art, as well as a few unknown treasures and gems. The online catalog will be available for viewing after March 1 through the website, gratzgallery.com. Works included in the sale reflect a wide spectrum of American art genres, from 18th, 19th
and 20th centuries’ Hudson River style and American Impressionism all the way to 20th and 21st centuries’ contemporary and modern art. Some of the highlights represented include a rare Pennsylvania landscape by famed furniture designer Wharton Esherick; “Kaaterskill Falls” a landscape by Hudson River painter John Frederick Kensett; an elegant, environmental female portrait by Charles Courtney Curran; and impressionist landscapes by John Pierce Barnes, Emile Gruppe, and Henry Snell. Included also are bold and colorful autumn foliage paintings by S. George Phillips and classic Bucks County winter snow scenes by Walter Emerson Baum. Witman Auctioneers’ Feb. 20 multi-consignor auction in Manheim, Pa., had no internet bidding. There were 214 registered bidders. The father and son team of Luke and Clarke Witman are off to a strong start this calendar year. The following are a few of the items that sold. All prices reported include a 10-percent buyers’ premium. An Abner Zook 3D diorama winter scene with red covered bridge sold for $25,300, and an Aaron Zook 3D diorama of an interior quilting scene brought the same amount. The former used to hang at the now defunct Heritage Center of Lancaster County. A Hattie Brunner (1966) summer/fall scene with a large
stone house and horse-drawn carriage in foreground sold for $10,450. A winter scene (1971) with a red covered bridge, farmhouse, and horse-drawn sleigh brought $9,900; a winter scene (1970) with a church and locomotive in foreground sold for $9,350; and a (1971) winter scene depicting a pond with ducks realized $7,700. Brunner (1889-1982), of Reinholds, Pa., is today first known for her primitive watercolor farm scenes. It is hard to imagine she has been gone for nearly 40 years, but for decades she was better known as an antiques dealer, a very influential one. Beginning in the 1920s, Brunner bought and sold some of the finest Pennsylvania German folk art in existance. Material from

The Waldorf Astoria Lobby Clock On View At New York Historical Society The great Waldorf Astoria clock is a legendary part of New York City lore and a meeting spot for generations of New Yorkers. Originally made for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, it was crafted in London and features relief portraits of American presidents and Queen Victoria of England. For decades, the towering clock graced the Waldorf Astoria, both at its first location on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street and in the lobby of the hotel’s longtime address at Park Avenue and 50th Street. This time-keeping treasure recently underwent a meticulous restoration and is on view in the Smith Gallery at the New-York Historical Society during the hotel’s renovation. The New-York Historical Society is located at 170 Central Park West at Richard Gilder Way (77th Street) in Manhattan, N.Y. For museum hours or additional information, call 212-873-3400.
