David Ellinger’s (1913-2003) “Amish School” is an 18-by-28-inch oil-on-canvas winter scene signed “D. Ellinger.” On Sunday, March 21, beginning at noon, Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio is yet again partnering with Invaluable.com to ring in the spring season with its fourth annual Fine American Paintings Sale and Live Online Auction event. The sale will present almost 100 lots of fine art by American and European artists. Included are a wide selection of impressionist, realist, folk art, modern, abstract and surrealist art, decorative art, as well as a few unknown treasures and gems. The online catalog will be available for viewing after March 1 through the website, gratzgallery.com. Works included in the sale reflect a wide spectrum of American art genres, from 18th, 19th

and 20th centuries’ Hudson River style and American Impressionism all the way to 20th and 21st centuries’ contemporary and modern art. Some of the highlights represented include a rare Pennsylvania landscape by famed furniture designer Wharton Esherick; “Kaaterskill Falls” a landscape by Hudson River painter John Frederick Kensett; an elegant, environmental female portrait by Charles Courtney Curran; and impressionist landscapes by John Pierce Barnes, Emile Gruppe, and Henry Snell. Included also are bold and colorful autumn foliage paintings by S. George Phillips and classic Bucks County winter snow scenes by Walter Emerson Baum. Witman Auctioneers’ Feb. 20 multi-consignor auction in Manheim, Pa., had no internet bidding. There were 214 registered bidders. The father and son team of Luke and Clarke Witman are off to a strong start this calendar year. The following are a few of the items that sold. All prices reported include a 10-percent buyers’ premium. An Abner Zook 3D diorama winter scene with red covered bridge sold for $25,300, and an Aaron Zook 3D diorama of an interior quilting scene brought the same amount. The former used to hang at the now defunct Heritage Center of Lancaster County. A Hattie Brunner (1966) summer/fall scene with a large

stone house and horse-drawn carriage in foreground sold for $10,450. A winter scene (1971) with a red covered bridge, farmhouse, and horse-drawn sleigh brought $9,900; a winter scene (1970) with a church and locomotive in foreground sold for $9,350; and a (1971) winter scene depicting a pond with ducks realized $7,700. Brunner (1889-1982), of Reinholds, Pa., is today first known for her primitive watercolor farm scenes. It is hard to imagine she has been gone for nearly 40 years, but for decades she was better known as an antiques dealer, a very influential one. Beginning in the 1920s, Brunner bought and sold some of the finest Pennsylvania German folk art in existance. Material from

The Waldorf Astoria Lobby Clock On View At New York Historical Society The great Waldorf Astoria clock is a legendary part of New York City lore and a meeting spot for generations of New Yorkers. Originally made for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, it was crafted in London and features relief portraits of American presidents and Queen Victoria of England. For decades, the towering clock graced the Waldorf Astoria, both at its first location on Fifth Avenue and 34th Street and in the lobby of the hotel’s longtime address at Park Avenue and 50th Street. This time-keeping treasure recently underwent a meticulous restoration and is on view in the Smith Gallery at the New-York Historical Society during the hotel’s renovation. The New-York Historical Society is located at 170 Central Park West at Richard Gilder Way (77th Street) in Manhattan, N.Y. For museum hours or additional information, call 212-873-3400.

The earliest forms of inkwells date back to ancient times, especially with Egyptians, where these type of objects can be found in some of America’s most prominent art museums today, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The earliest forms were made from hollowed out stone, although, over time, they were eventually made into clay containers. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, inkwells became a lot more ornate, often embellished with gold or silver, even though for many centuries it was considered a lowly task undertaken by a scribe or scrivener on behalf of higher society. The most significant surviving American example may be a salt-glazed stoneware inkstand manufactured in Manhattan in the 18th century, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The base is inscribed “New York, July 12th, 1773, William Crolius.” It was previously owned by noted New York collector Barry Cohen until it sold at Sotheby’s in 1991 to Pennsylvania collector Dr. David Bronstein, who gifted it to the Met in 2012. Potters all over America manufactured inkwells in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as potteries in Ontario in Canada. But inkstands seem to have been a form more popular with potters in the

in dimly lighted rooms or by the light of wood fires, looked each other in the face when we met at each other’s doors, all unconscious of that restless kingdom known as society, and in blessed, happy ignorance of what is now called refinement and culture, and in a perfect freedom from the weakening, tormenting, pessimistic fastidiousness that afflicts modern life. It is true there were the asperities and crudeness of uncut marble about all social life, but viewed in the light of philosophy born of experience and close observation of this drama called life, the conditions might almost appear ideal,” recites Schaff in the book. In connection to this early life in Etna is a fascinating green glazed red earthenware inkstand that was recently discovered in Florida. It is inscribed on three sides: “1852 / Jacob Rudolph / Etna.” Even though the inkstand is missing its original inkwell and sander, the inscription is important, seeing there are only a small group of American examples that survive today adorned with so much information. Occasionally, pieces turn up that are dated, but few can be associated with a specific person, place and time, such as this example. United States Federal Census records indicate that Jacob Heinrich Rudolph (182263) was an immigrant from Switzerland, and he is documented as a potter in Etna in 1850 and 1860. It is certainly possible that he was working in Etna prior to 1850, although the inkstand is dated only two years after his earliest record of employment. In fact, this important object may have been Rudolph’s personal inkstand, perhaps laying witness to some of Rudolph’s production and even used for his pottery bookkeeping and other records. It is also important to note that this inkstand is dated the same year that Jacob Rudolph and his wife, Elizabeth, were married on Dec. 26, 1852. The couple is listed with three children in the 1860 Census, but there is no indication that any of them were taught how to manufacture pottery before Rudolph’s death in 1863; however, it is certainly possible that author Morris Schaff met Rudolph in his early years as a boy living in Etna. Pottery Production in Etna, Ohio Census records indicate that there were other potters from Switzerland employed in Etna in 1850. It is certainly possible that Rudolph migrated to America in search of prosperity and, upon his arrival, learned the potter’s trade. Records do not seem to exist that indicate where he originally learned how to manufacture pottery. But if this inkstand is any indication of the wares made in Etna, then production was evidently skilled and accomplished. If it were not for the information inscribed on this inkstand, it would most likely be mistaken for production from another location today. This seems to happen with production from some of the smaller midwestern settlements and religious communities during this period, where production is Continued on page 5

have challenged the long history of clay and its reliance on the potter’s wheel; featured works range from slight deviations of traditional vessel forms to deconstructions that reject utility and exploit the boundless experimentation that clay affords. Mid-20thcentury works by artists Axel Salto, Ken Price, Toshiko Takeazu, Katherine Choy, Peter Voulkos, and Wing Ng are seen alongside contemporary creations by artists who continue to expand the possibilities of the medium such as Aneta Regel, Kathy Butterly, Syd Carpenter, and Lynda Benglis. Also included in the

exhibition are eight striking works by the late 19th-century artist George Ohr. These loans from Ellison’s private collection attest to Ohr’s radical vision and foreshadow the embrace of abstraction and nonrepresentational forms by artists in the 1950s and ’60s. Ellison’s extraordinary gift and this exhibition represent over 40 years of collecting ceramics, a passion that eventually crystallized into a singular approach emphasizing nonrepresentational form in clay. Presenting the work of 49 artists whose creations reject any lingering ideas of medium-based hierarchies,

“Shapes From Out of Nowhere: Ceramics From the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection” celebrates an extraordinary gift to The Met of 125 modern and contemporary ceramics from Robert A. Ellison Jr., given to the museum in honor of its 150th anniversary. The exhibition will present a selection of over 75 works from this unparalleled collection that charts the evolution of abstraction in clay from the second half of the 20th century through the present. The exhibition is made possible by The Modern Circle. Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met, commented, “For decades, Bob Ellison has transformed The Met’s collection with extraordinary gifts of ceramics, a legacy of expertise and generosity made all the more remarkable with this most recent gift. We are deeply grateful to Bob for these outstanding works of art, which represent a diverse array of styles by both well-known and underrepresented artists alike from the last century. It will be an honor to share these objects of great beauty and innovation with our audiences.” “Museums are in many ways collections of collections that have been assembled with the keen eye of passionate individuals. Bob Ellison is one of these brilliant collectors,” said Sheena Wagstaff, The Met’s Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art. “With this donation of marvelously imaginative works by a range of artists, many influenced by the eccentric Mississippian and accidental modernist George Ohr, The Met is now proud to own deep holdings of unique contemporary abstract forms in clay.” The exhibition highlights the myriad approaches embraced by artists who

Of course, something had to keep that “long beautiful hair” from flying all over the place. In the days before bobby pins and barrettes, that “something” was the decorative hair comb. Wilma Flintstone probably used one, since boxwood combs have been unearthed dating to the Stone Age. In Wilma’s day, popular choices for combs were wood, ivory, and fish bones (like the one used to skewer that The black over clear comb has black rhinestones. top knot on little Pebbles).

All that white powder kept the (ahem) bugs at bay. During the Victorian era, decorative combs came in handy for pinioning into place the false hair needed

to achieve the illusion of abundant tresses. By the mid-1800s, the rise of mass manufacturing meant that attractive comb sets, often adorned with paste jewels, were within the reach of almost every pocketbook. Large, straight combs, many in graceful fan shapes, were the centerpiece, accompanied by smaller side and curved back combs. In the hair comb litany, four teeth

Governor Jim Thompson Decoy Collection Comes To Auction Guyette & Deeter Spring Sale Set For April 30 And May 1 The late Governor James R. Thompson, the longest serving governor in Illinois history, four terms and 14 years (19771991), was an avid antique collector for 50 years, specializing in decoys, and his collection will be up for bids this spring. The governor’s goal was to acquire a representative sample of Illinois carvers with a diverse selection of species. Thompson (1936-2020) purchased top-of-the-line decoys from Guyette & Deeter auctions and privately from decoy notables Joe Tonelli, Randy Root, Dan Johnson, and Dave Kneebone. Over the course of

18 years, Thompson amassed one of the finest Illinois River d e c o y collections. Guyette & Deeter’s spring twoday auction will be held Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1. It will feature over 550 lots with guaranteed condition reports. Phone and absentee bidding will be available, along with

her business (her shop was called The Tulip Shop) is in most major American museums today. She had a nationwide coast-to-coast customer base. Among her customers was Dr. Albert Barnes, founder of the Barnes Foundation. A retrospective exhibit on her career took place in 2010 at the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley in Ephrata, Pa. Her artwork, which she began

Spider-Man Debut Grabs Top Spot In $694,430 Sale As the old adage says, “Records are meant to be broken,” and Heritage Auctions is proving it once again. For the third consecutive week, they broke the world record for the largest weekly comics auction during the titled Sunday and Monday Comics, Animation, Video Games and Art Weekly Online Auction that closed Feb. 15 on HA.com after reaching $694,430 in total sales. The event, which included 1,147 lots and drew 3,021 bidders over two days, erased the previous standard of $672,569, which was set last week. “The market is beyond robust. I’m so pleased our consignors are doing well and our buyers continue to add important pieces to their collections,” Heritage Auctions Senior Vice President Ed Jaster said. “Only three weeks ago, we had our first $600,000 weekly sale. Only to beat that record the next week and again the week after. It won’t be long before our first $700,000 weekly sale.” As is often the case, the top lot in the auction was Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel,

Single-Owner Folk Art Collection Comes To Market Lenhartsville Estate Boasts Work Of Luke Gottshall, Among Others

A collection of contemporary saltglazed stoneware will be sold (Photo above and below).

Among the largest collections of folk artist Luke Gottshall’s work will be sold. The collector bought directly from the artist in the early 1980s.

By Karl Pass Kleinfelter’s Auction of Lebanon, Pa., will hold an online sale closing Sunday, March 21, for a vast singleowner estate from Lenhartsville, Pa. The estate is that of Donald Kerchner, an eccentric collector who lived in a large property just off the I-78 exit in the small northern Berks County borough. Kerchner was not a minimalist, the house was absolutely loaded. “Every bit

of wall space was covered,” mentioned David Horst, owner of Kleinfelter’s. Other auction houses are involved with the estate. Pook & Pook sold part of it in its Feb. 24 online only sale and will sell more, including a large collection of silver, in the spring. Kerchner was of the generation that did not ask themselves where something would go, they just bought it. Nearly 50 works by Gottshall will be sold, such as folk carvings of birds, fabric and watercolor collages, and Gottshall’s well-known horse-drawn wagons. Some were lent to the 1998 exhibition, “Generations,” at the Freedman Gallery at Albright College. About 50 reverse paintings on glass by folk artist John Long will also be

A 1960-61 San Francisco 49ers jumbo 15-inch-tall bobblehead doll will be auctioned by Huggins & Scott Auctions online, closing Thursday, March 11. The sale opened Feb. 26. A descendant of the Japanese family that coowned the distributor, Otagiri Mercantile Company, consigned the bobblehead. Otagiri was headquartered in San Francisco and was a stoneware manufacturing company that started production in the 1950s. Chiyoko and Goro Otagiri established the Otagiri Mercantile Company after their return to Japan in 1947, following their release from the Topaz internment camp in Utah. Otagiri evidently produced five or fewer jumbos for each of the 14 NFL teams. Condition of the bright, bold beauty would be Near Mint, except for some cracking on the left shoe’s side and bottom. There are intact original decals of “NFL” (shoe), “Japan” (underside) and “FORTY NINERS” (chest). About twice the height of standard nodders, jumbos are even more susceptible to the general wear and tear that come from practical usage and long-term storage of these delicate 60year-old collectibles.
