A compass personally owned by Daniel Boone, with provenance, sold for $109,375, more than five times its pre-auction estimate, to lead Heritage Auctions’ Feb. 25 and 26
Americana and Political Signature
Auction to $1,465,666.
“This compass is an exceedingly significant piece of American history,” says Curtis Lindner, Americana and Political Director atHeritage Auctions. “Daniel Boone was a pioneer, a frontiersman, whose accomplishments included exploration and settling of Kentucky, which at the time was beyond the borders of the 13 Colonies. His curiosity and courage, and at times, this compass, allowed him to explore the world around him.”
Included among the provenance that accompanies the compass are two newspaper articles from the 1930s that tell the story of the transfer of the compass from Boone to a
young friend named Abraham Miller, who was taught to shoot by Boone. When Miller, at just 12 years old, killed a panther threatening his family’s cattle, Boone was so proud that he gave this compass to Miller. Also reaching six figures was a rare carte-de-visite signed by former President Abraham Lincoln that drew a winning bid of $106,250. The CDV was one of six Lincoln is known to have signed as a donation to a Sanitary Fair that was held Oct. 18, 1864, in Tazewell County, Ill. Mary L. Who occupied this desk from 1857-73 is not known, but it likely was acquired by Nehemiah G. Ordway of New Hampshire, who was Sergeant of Arms for the House from 1863-73, when furnishings were updated in the chamber during the final year of his tenure. It was sold early in the 20th century by an antiques dealer in Warner, N.H., the birthplace of Ordway, and remained in
the family of the purchaser for more than 100 years.

An important and historic silver pitcher with impeccable provenance made by Paul Revere, the most famous of American silversmiths, sold for $129,875 in an online-only Jewelry, Porcelain, Stoneware and Indian Pottery Auction held Jan. 18 by Weiss Auctions, based in Lynwood, N.Y. It was a new world auction record price for a silver pitcher made by Paul Revere.
The pitcher, 6.5 inches in height, was engraved with the initials of Benjamin Russell, the American journalist and founder and editor of the newspaper the Columbian Centinel. He learned the printing trade in the printing office of Isaiah Thomas, where he learned to set type. His father participated in the Boston Tea Party, and his son was a ship’s captain.
Russell’s biography is impressive, almost as impressive was the pitcher’s continued ownership through the family. Both Revere and Russell were involved in the founding of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association. The pitcher weighed 17.35 troy ounces (539.6 grams).
An original condition Paul Revere silver pitcher, 6.25 inches tall, identified to Benjamin Russell (1761-1845), an American journalist who established the Columbian Centinel, sold for $129,875, a new auction record price.
It was a two-day auction (Jan. 18 and 19), with 300 lots on day one, featuring jewelry, coins, porcelain, stoneware and Native American pottery. The second day featured over 400 lots highlighted by fine art, including paintings, posters, illustration art, cartoon art and comic art.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert
This Week: Old School Antiques Dealing: Chapter II
buy at auction and resell in the malls, assuming this was how most dealers bought and sold antiques. It came as a huge surprise that in fact many dealers simply bought and sold from each other rather than going to public sale. The moment of revelation came when we did our first show, the old Eastern National Antiques Show at the Harrisburg Farm Show.
By Peter Seibert
Last time, I left off talking about my memories of the antiques trade in the 1980s and early 1990s. It was a time of loose money and a lot of passion for collecting antiques. I remember watching an episode of a 1990s TV show where the characters talked about going antiques hunting on the weekend. Everyone knew, and everyone did it!
My mother and I had dipped our toes into the business by setting up in two antiques malls. We tended to
I had grown up going to Eastern National since it was in my hometown. It was, at that time, primarily a glass show with dozens of booths featuring peachblow, Tiffany and pattern glass. I was never into glass, but many other dealers also set up at Eastern National. My old friend, Johnny Neidinger, told me that he sold really well because he never brought glass. His booth stood out in contrast to the others, and so he had great sales. So Mom and I figured that was our moment to make a killing.
We saved up stock from dozens of auctions and headed for the show. We were told that
they had porters to help us move into the booth. We thought that would be great, and so we brought furniture. Turns out, the porters were there early in the morning on setup day but long gone by the time we arrived at 3 p.m. What we did not know was that early setup and preview was how every dealer made their money buying and selling to each other. So we got there and the show was set up, but empty. We got our stuff carried into the booth by ourselves, and, of course, that year we were in the middle of the building! We put it all out and went home to get dinner and return. When we got back, half our booth was gone, and little business cards littered the table with the name of the dealer who had taken an item and a promise to return and pay for it.
I will say that they all did, but it wiped us out. We raced off the next day to try and buy at a country sale or two to refill the booth, but it was not to be. What we learned was that dealer-to-dealer picking was how antiques moved in
Locati Holds Big Online Sale
Locati LLC, located in the heart of Bucks County, Pa., presented its recent monthly online auction ending on Feb. 19. Over 500 lots were offered spanning a wide range of periods and categories.
“We had strong participation in this auction, on four bidding platforms, from left bids made during our oneweek preview event and on the floor, ” commented coowner Michael Locati. The
February auction had a sellthrough rate of 90 percent.
“We are offering appealing auctions on a monthly basis, great especially for new collectors, as our average lot price is usually between $400 and $500,” added Locati. He went on to note that another good sale with more fresh-to-themarket items in a wide range

and around the business.
Now today, it is not considered good form to buy out of a booth, whether in a show or at a mall, and reprice it higher and put it in your own booth. Save it for the next show. Back then, folks perhaps had less scruples. We watched as our lamps and china popped up for sale in dozens of other booths with much higher price tags.
We did not do Eastern National more than twice as it was too hard. Mom’s health and my graduate school studies took too much away. Still it was a heck of an experience.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. He and his familyarerestoringa1905arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

1923 Willards Chocolates Babe Ruth Baseball Card Brings $23,600
Graded PSA 3 VG (Very Good), Ruth Card Came From A Rare Canadian-Issued Set
A 1923 Willards Chocolates
Babe Ruth baseball card was a hit for $23,600, and a cutaway model of a 1962 Vickers VC-10 BOAC (later British Air) jet plane soared to $18,880 in an
online-only Advertising and Historic Objects Auction held Jan. 21 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. Both lots blasted through their $2,000-$3,000 estimates. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars.
The Babe Ruth card, graded PSA 3 VG (Very Good), is an exceptional example of an early issue Ruth card from a rare Canadian-issued set. It featured a sepia-toned image of the Bambino at bat, with a facsimile signature. It is considered the most sought after card in the series and came out of the estate of collector William Audley “Huck” Caesar. It was also the top lot of the auction.
The cutaway model of a 1962 Vickers VC-10 BOAC jet plane was one of only two known and was made by Walkers Westway in England. The model is highly sought after by collectors for her beautiful lines and interesting history. The plane achieved a record for the fastest crossing
of the Atlantic by a subsonic jet airliner of 5 hours and 1 minute (later broken).
The 376-lot auction, officially titled Advertising and Historic Objects, was brimming with items in many collecting
categories, to include advertising signs, banks, breweriana, bicycles, bottles, clocks, coinops, fruit jars, general store, historic objects, militaria, models, soda advertising and sports memorabilia.
“Collectors fought over key items,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “The variety of content made it an exciting auction to watch. There was no shortage of enthusiasm, with key pieces selling multiple times over the high estimate. Sixty-four percent of the top 50 lots exceeded estimate, and 100 percent of lots were sold.”
All lots were offered without reserve, for an overall gross of $369,163, with online bidding provided by MillerandMillerAuctions.com and LiveAuctioneers.com. Nearly 500 registered bidders placed a combined 8,546 bids. Prices include an 18-percent buyer’s premium.

Claude Gillot: Satire In The Age Of Reason On View Until May 28
Around 1700, as an increasingly pious Louis XIV withdrew to Versailles, Paris flourished. The dynamic artistic scene included specialists such as Claude Gillot (1673–1722), who forged a career largely outside of the Royal Academy, designing everything from opera costumes to tapestries. Known primarily as a draftsman, Gillot specialized in scenes of satire. He found his subjects among the irreverent commedia dell’arte performances at fairground theaters, in the writings of satirists who waged the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, and in the antics of vice-ridden satyrs whose bacchanals exposed human folly.

Fine Books And Manuscript Auction Shows Strength In Category
Potter & Potter Auctions held its first book sale of the year on Feb. 16. This 531-lot event realized over $630,000 and had a 95percent sell through rate. Prices noted below include a buyer’s premium.
Books by, or with ties to, beloved American author Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain 1835–1910) generated impressive results. A first edition presentation copy of W.W. Jacobs’ (British, 18631943) “Salthaven,” inscribed to and by Twain, realized $31,250. Published by Methuen & Co. in London in 1908, Twain additionally inscribed
on the half title, “It’s a delightful book. Mark.” Below, Twain further reaffirms this statement, apparently in passing the book to someone else: “Bog House, Bermuda, March/10.I have read it about 5 times. The above
verdict stands.”
A 37-volume collection of “The Works of Mark Twain,” published in New York by Gabriel Wells between 1923–25, sold for $11,875. This limited-edition set, number 79 of 1024 copies of the “Definitive Edition,” was signed by Twain on the front flyleaf of Volume I. The volumes retained their original dust jackets.
A 25-volume collection of Mark Twain’s Works published in Hartford by the American Publishing Company from1899–1907 realized $16,250.
This set, number 233 of 512 copies of the “Autograph Edition” for subscribers, was published on India paper designed by Tiffany & Co. and etched by W.H.W.
Bicknell. It also featured numerous engravings, 18 of which were signed by their respective artist. This collection is considered the rarest and most desirable of all the Twain sets among experts. This sale featured remarkable first editions of some of the noteworthy books of the past two centuries. J.R.R. Tolkien’s (1892–1973) “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy sold for $19,200. Threesome included “The Fellowship of the Ring” from 1954, “The Two Towers” from 1954, and “The Return of the King” from 1955, and all were published in London by Allen & Unwin Ltd.

Auction Season Up And Running For Carlisle Auctions In Lakeland, Florida
A 1970 Plymouth Barracuda Brought $86,400
Carlisle Auctions will run over 1,600 lots across the auction block in 2023, and its season of automotive excitement recently commenced by way of a two-day event in Lakeland, Fla. The Lakeland Winter Collector Car Auction took place at the SUN ‘n’ FUN Expo Campus on Feb. 10 and 11, and in doing so, brought buyers, sellers, and spectators alike together for $4 million in total sales, money raised for charity, and live automotive excitement outdoors amongst
airplanes, palm trees, and sunny skies.
As mentioned, the auction garnered $4 million in sales. This data exceeds last year’s Lakeland February totals. In addition, a nice mix of lots staked claim to “Top 4” distinction. Those four, a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda ($86,400), 1968 Chevy Camaro ($78,440), 1966 Cadillac Eldorado ($77,145), and 1965 Chevrolet Corvette ($72,000), accounted for nearly $400,000 of the gross. The Camaro was the
top-selling lot on day one, while the Barracuda was the top sale day two and overall.
In addition to the cars that crossed the block, the popular All-Truck Hour returned on day one when 25 trucks crossed the block. Overall, this hour of the session was the strongest performing of any time slot spanning both days. Lots ranged from standard trucks to Jeeps, SUVs, and a VW Van.
Carlisle Auctions also helped sell a vehicle for charity.
The lots came to the event by way of Steve Muschlitz and Wheels from the Heart. The sale of a 1992 Jaguar garnered $2,600 for Wheels from the Heart, a Delray Beach, Fla., based organization that provides road-worthy transportation to single mothers in need and this sale offers a nice boost for the cause.
“Thank you to all of the buyers and sellers that made this a great start to our auction year,” noted director of auction operations Tony
Cline. “We are looking forward to our Spring Carlisle Collector Car Auction in April in Carlisle, Pa. We’re actively accepting consignments and bidder registration and can’t wait to see you at Carlisle for this great event.”
Finally, Carlisle Auctions reminds everyone that its

single-sided porcelain sign (Canadian, 1939), measuring 7 feet wide by 45 inches tall, marked lower left edge, “St. Thomas Metal Signs Ltd. 1939” and lower right edge, “Made in Canada,” rose to $9,440, while a Coca-Cola Vendo 44 vending machine (Canadian, 1950s), painted steel with chrome trim, an all-original, survivor example, with coin mechanism and interior bottle racks, 58 inches tall, made $5,310.
Fruit jars are always a big hit with collectors. A Beaver (Canadian) quart jar in a dark honey amber color, with a factory ground lip, fetched $8,260; a Beaver “left-facing”
midget pint jar with exceptional embossing and cooling marks at the termination of the thread changed hands for $5,015; a Beehive (Canadian) midget pint jar, amethyst in color, showing only minor flakes to the lip, made $4,425; and a Hamilton Glass Works No. 1 clamp jar, aqua, in excellent condition, reached $5,900.
A Dr. Lesure’s Veterinary Remedies cabinet with a single-sided tin front door panel that shows a horse’s head in an oval, made in Coshocton, Ohio, in the early 20th century, finished at $4,425. A Ward’s Lime Crush syrup dispenser (American, 1920s), porcelain with a silver-plated pump, 14 inches tall, reached $5,605. Among the Ward’s syrup dispensers, the “Lime” version is widely considered to many as the most difficult to find.
Another similar Ward’s syrup dispenser, for Orange Crush, also from the 1920s and porcelain with a silverplated pump, didn’t fare as well ($4,425), one factor being the pump didn’t work.
A Peabodys Overalls single-sided porcelain sign (Canadian, 1910s), a rare variation featuring the script “Railroad King” plus other differences from the more common version, found a new home for $5,310, while A De Laval Cream Separators single-sided tin sign (American, 1910s) in a marked gilt plaster,
professionally regilded frame, sold for $5,310.
Rounding out this short list was an English 1884 Rudge 54-inch high-wheel bicycle in untouched original condition, serial # “1260,” boasting a new Kirkpatrickstyle saddle, which sped off for $4,425.
