Action Comics #329 original cover art by Silver Age Superman artist Curt Swan and inked by Sheldon Moldoff soared to $48,964. The oversized 12 by 18 3/8-inch thin artboard features the pen-andink cover that was originally published by DC in October 1965. The cover is dominated by a large, full body image of Superman in the center wielding the Super-Sword of Krypton and a large SuperShield. The Vault of Horror #41 unpublished comic cover original art by Johnny Craig scared up a winning bid of $27,258. The Vault of Horror ended at #40 (December 1954-January 1955), so for this piece, EC artist Craig imagined what the cover of #41 would have looked like, had it been published. Hake’s Auctions, specialists in Americana and collectibles since 1967, set a new house record when their Feb. 24 and 25 Premier Auction #231 cashed out at $2,888,163. Not only did the auction set a new monetary record for Hake’s, it also achieved new highs for sell-through rate (98 percent), bidder volume, and the number of bids placed. “Our goal in every auction is to give our bidders the best opportunity to purchase rare, highcaliber items from any collecting category that grabs their interest. Whether they are passionate about comics, baseball, original art, political, toys, historical items, you name it, they will find something in our auctions. We are excited by the bidder turnout and anticipate growing it more in the future,” said Hake’s president, Alex Winter. Two six-figure sales were realized in the political and historical categories, starting with an 1860 Lincoln and Hamlin “Wide Awakes” all-seeing-eye parade banner that sold for $143,104, an auction record price for the Lincoln textile. This Week: The Big Move!

So, it has been two weeks since we returned to the MidAtlantic after the big move across country. Most of us move several times in our lives (I will say that we have done it way too many times). Planning to move so many times has given me an interesting perspective on how to relocate your collections. This time, we have faced the challenge of moving in the worst conditions possible: heavy snow and minus 15 degrees during the pack-out. With that in mind, I thought I might offer a few

3. Use clothing and bedding to help in the packing process. We have used sheets and sweaters as buffers in our boxes to help protect valuable items. 4. Mark your boxes. We messed up on this before, and it costs us so much time, particularly when we reuse a box that has old markings on it. When the movers cannot be here for the loading and unloading, we have even color coordinated so the master bedroom was always green. 5. Finally, moving is a great time to cull the herd. Reduce the number of lesser items that you have, and separate out the broken examples, the collections that never really worked out. It’s also a chance to share your treasures with family and friends. Make a gift to someone who should be starting to think about a collection or begin to pass on treasures to the next generation. One of the challenges that I have found is my library. With so many research resources

available online, holding a big research library is no longer critical. That being said, I have to confess that I have repurchased several books that I previously sold as I found them to be a faster resource than online. So, as you think about moving, it is time to review those books and, with a clear eye, decide whether you want to keep them or not. Moving is part of life, and I encourage you as you consider those changes to make your plans accordingly.

ideas on moving based upon all my experiences. 1. Use a good mover. We have been fortunate to use a local mover in Pennsylvania who did an exceptional job. That is critical to the moving process. Several years ago, we had to use (because of my employer’s rules) a large commercial mover. The damage done to our collections was immense. Local packers who had no responsibility were brought in to load the trucks, and the mess they made is still evident. Invest in a great mover! 2. Spend your time to pack well. We have reached the point of packing ourselves rather than relying upon others. We purchase good quality boxes and materials and pack things really tight. We had a box that was filled with extremely fragile items but packed so well that when it dropped nothing was broken.

Frick Diptych Series. Photo courtesy of Joe Coscia, 2021. approaches his own relationship with landscape in his art. In March 2021, the Frick published a Diptych devoted to Titian’s extraordinary portrait of Pietro Aretino, the famed writer, poet, playwright, and satirist. An essay by Xavier F. Salomon, the Frick’s deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator, is paired with a contribution by acclaimed author Francine Prose. Future titles in the series will look at Fragonard’s “The Progress of Love,” examined by Xavier F. Salomon and award-winning novelist Alan Hollinghurst, and Monet’s “Vétheuil in Winter,” considered by Frick Curator Emerita Susan Grace

Galassi and artist Olafur Eliasson. Published in 2018, the inaugural Frick Diptych is on Holbein’s 1527 portrait of the prominent Tudor-era figure “Sir Thomas More” and pairs an essay by Xavier F. Salomon with a literary piece by the award-winning writer Hilary Mantel. In the second volume, Johannes Vermeer’s extraordinary “Mistress and Maid” (1666–67) is illuminated with an essay by the Frick’s former associate research curator Peggy Iacono and an imagined storyline by James Ivory, film director, writer and producer. In the third title, the Frick’s former Decorative Arts

curator Charlotte Vignon is joined by artist and bestselling author Edmund de Waal in considering a spectacular pair of porcelain and gilt-bronze candlesticks by Pierre Gouthière. The fourth diptych is devoted to Rembrandt’s enigmatic portrait of “The Polish Rider.” An essay by Salomon is accompanied by a charming illustrated essay by author and illustrator Maira Kalman. The Frick Diptych series is published by The Frick Collection in association with D Giles Ltd., London, sold online through the Museum Shop at www.frick.org/shop or by emailing sales@frick.org.

The popular Frick Diptych series continues with books on masterpieces in the collection. Since 2018, five titles have been published, each illuminating a single work with an engaging, in-depth essay by a curator paired with a contribution from a contemporary cultural figure. Connecting the Old Masters with the voices of today, the series is designed to foster critical engagement appealing to the specialist and non-specialist alike. Comments Ian Wardropper, Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Director, “These fresh takes on our holdings have often included close inspections and deeply personal reflections. We are delighted with the response to the first group of books, which focuses on Holbein’s “Sir Thomas More,” Vermeer’s “Mistress and Maid,” and Rembrandt’s “Polish Rider,” and are excited to announce upcoming titles on beloved works by Titian, Fragonard, and Monet.” Published this month, in association with D Giles Ltd., the new volume on Constable’s “White Horse” puts the spotlight on a landscape. Included is a scholarly essay by Frick curator Aimee Ng, who discusses how this work, the first of Constable’s River Stour “six-footer” paintings, represents the artist’s unique process and his dedication to painting en plein air. As represented in this monumental work, the celebration of rural life led to recognition later in the artist’s life and influenced succeeding artists, among them, the French Impressionists. Complementing the essay is a meditation by artist William Kentridge, who writes about the contrast between the world represented in the painting and memories of his childhood in South Africa, comparing how he

This year, the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Friends of Art, an independent nonprofit organization established in 1921 that promotes the study of art and supports the museum. Two exhibitions organized by the MMA recognize the contributions of the Friends of Art, highlighting works of art that the group has contributed to the MMA over the past century. “Friends of Art: 100 Years” is an exhibition featuring a selection of almost 30 artworks donated by the Friends to the museum’s permanent collection over the decades. MMA senior curator Art Martin comments, “Visitors will discover a rich diversity of objects along with some of the museum’s most significant works of art, including pieces by James Richmond Barthe´ and Paul Howard Manship and one of our signature paintings, Tunis Ponsen’s ‘Yacht Club Pier.’”

The exhibition runs through Sunday, May 2. A video, “Friends of Art 100th Year Anniversary,” tells the story of the history of the group through the years. The video and exhibition information can be found by visiting www.muskegonartmuseum.org/exhibition/friendsof-art-100-years. “Ansel Adams: The Photographs of Yosemite Suite” features 24 iconic images of Yosemite National Park, the location and pictures that defined Adams’s internationally celebrated career. Friends of Art members purchased the photographs for the museum collection in 1989. The exhibition provides a view into unforgettable scenes of America’s

natural grandeur, first photographed by Adams in the 1940s. The exhibition runs through Sunday, May 9. Blue Lake Public Radio provides media sponsorship for the “Friends of Art: 100

Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market Announces First Antique Model Train Show New Event To Be Held April 24 The Golden Nugget Antique Market, often rated one of the top 10 flea markets on the East Coast, recently announced it will be hosting its first Antique Model Train Show on Saturday, April 24. The Golden Nugget is well known for expert dealers specializing in antique furniture, art, and many collectibles, such as coins, stamps, jewelry, vinyl records, depression glass and, of course, model trains. “We are basically turning our covered pavilion into a train station for the day. The model train dealers will all be in one area in our pavilion and will be displaying model

trains of all gauges. A test track will also be available on-site. I believe this will be a great event for both the dealers and collectors,” said Golden Nugget manager Mitch Freedman. Located in Lambertville, N.J., the 50-year-old establishment is open year-round on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Since 1967, the Golden Nugget has been a “gold mine” of an indoor/outdoor market, specializing in antiques, collectibles, art, and more. The market is located at 1850 River Road. For more information, visit www.gnflea.com.

example of a 1978 Kenner “special offer” Land Speeder, factory sealed and in 85 NM+ condition, cruising past its $5,000-$10,000 estimate to settle at $17,523. A richly illustrated 1977 Star Wars Topps Series 1 cardboard display box containing its correct full complement of 36 unopened wax bubble gum packs came to auction sealed and authenticated by BBCE. It more than doubled its high estimate at $12,981. “A high-grade example of this item would have sold for a few thousand dollars just a year or so ago,” Alex Winter remarked. “Prices are really taking off.” An original Led Zeppelin concert poster that rocked the auction was created to promote the legendary British band’s Toronto concert that

took place on Aug. 18, 1969, not coincidentally the final day of Woodstock. “The band had been asked to perform at the festival, but their manager, Peter Green, nixed the idea because he didn’t want Zeppelin to be just another band in a lineup,” according to Winter. Local Toronto legend has it that some locals who attended Woodstock took off right after Jimi Hendrix finished playing so they could drive seven hours and catch the Led Zeppelin show. Estimated at $2,000-$5,000, the poster sold for $13,421. All prices quoted in this report are inclusive of an 18-percent buyer’s premium. To learn more, call 866-404-9800 (toll-free) or 717-434-1600. This Hasbro Transformers Series 2 Jetfire encapsulated, original factory-sealed window box containing Autobot Air Guardian Jetfire, 1984, AFA-graded 90+ NM+/MT, the highest-graded example according to current AFA Population Report, sold for $24,806.

Four logbook pages (two front and two back sides) bearing 12 signatures of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and five signatures of associate and mentor Ralph Abernathy, were signed during their 1963 incarceration at the Birmingham (Ala.) jail. During that incarceration, King produced his manifesto on nonviolent civil disobedience known as “Letter From a Birmingham Jail.” This sold for $130,909, a world auction record for a Martin Luther King signature.

A coveted 1920 Cox and Roosevelt jugate button regarded as the political memorabilia equivalent of Action Comics’ #1 with first appearance of Superman, the button remained in a private Midwestern collection for 50-plus years, sold for $42,480.

of George Armstrong Custer from a photograph taken by the iconic Civil War-era photographer Matthew Brady went for $5,750; and three scarce and historically significant ingots (two silver, one gold) brought a combined $86,792 in a five-day Sweetheart Express Auction held Feb. 11 to 15 by Holabird Western Americana Collections. The auction was held online and live in the Holabird gallery, located at 3555 Airway Drive in Reno, Nev. The sale was bursting with nearly 4,000 lots in a wide array of collecting categories. “We broke nearly every record anybody’s ever heard about for a multiple consignor Americana sale,” said company president Fred Holabird. “We enjoyed a nearly 90 percent sell-through average.” The auction was titled the Sweetheart Express because it was loaded with sweet deals right around Valentine’s Day and contained thousands of great gift ideas. The sale was headlined by two major collections: the Gary Nelson collection of railroadiana and the Stewart MacKenzie collection of Montana mining. The Lincoln silver Peace medal dated 1862 was one of just 200 made at the Philadelphia mint, 100 each in two sizes (the one in the sale was the smaller size, 62.5 mm). The reverse showed that the medal was an Osage Indian Award. The Peace medals were given to tribal chiefs or sometimes to Indians involved in friendly treaties by the various regional agencies. A collection of 42 original folio lithographs drawn by artist David Roberts (1796-1864) during his visit to the Holy Land in 1838-39 was from a catalog that was published in two forms: as a book titled “The Holy Land, Syria, Ideuma, Arabia, Egypt” and “Nubia: From Drawings Made on the Spot,” and as folios, which he sold on a subscription basis. The collection sold for $18,125. The three ingots attracted attention because they were

Marshall autographed card (“The Discoverer of Gold in California January 19th, 1848,” signed Jas. W. Marshall”), with a vignette of Sutter’s Mill and a photo of Marshall ($2,250). A custom album containing 31 photographs of mining in Nome, Alaska, from 1900-02, all taken by photographer Otto Daniel Goetze, plus a small male portrait (possibly of Goetze) sold for $3,125. Also, a classic California Gold Rush pocket scale in a black case with gold letters, the small scale itself made of brass and in extremely fine or better condition, brought $1,250. A California Mining Association brass lapel pin showing a pick and shovel with a grizzly bear and labeled “California Mining Association,” suspended by a chain, possibly from the 1800s, realized $1,125. Also, a classic ceramic liquor jug (“J.J. Carollo Liquor Dealer Diamondville, Wyoming”), 9 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter, with a small chip, changed hands for $1,937. Day two contained part two of stocks and bonds (oil, railroad, transportation, agriculture, banking, brewing and industrial), as well as firearms, military and political collectibles. The firearms and military section featured the tintype of Custer, housed in a non-political case, 3.25-by-3.5 inches. Matthew Brady took dozens of photos of Custer in various poses that day in May of 1865. Stocks were led by a certificate from 1870 for the New York and Pennsylvania Blue Stone Co., noteworthy because it was signed by company president

James Fisk, one of the fabled New York “Robber Barons” in the mid-1800s ($10,937), and an 1883 certificate for Petersen’s American Aerial Navigation company, very rare and with an amazing airship vignette ($1,875). An 1893 stock certificate for the Yellowstone National Park Transportation Company with a nice pictorial of Old Faithful, signed by company president and famed Montana entrepreneur Harry W. Child, fetched $750. Also, an original photograph from around 1885, showing a stage coach and driver, taken at Fort Grant in the Arizona Territory by Daniel A. Markey, went for $1,312. Day three featured railroadiana and transportation, numismatics, tokens and sports. In addition to the Lincoln silver Peace Medal and three choice ingots, the session also featured a brass Southern Railroad Engine bell, 12 inches in diameter, ca. 1920s, mounted on a wood base ($2,250), and a Lionel #773 locomotive 4-6-4 and tender, O scale, both like new, ca. 1957-60 ($1,750). Day four, Valentine’s Day, featured art, Native Americana (to include a collection of 19th century photos and documents, including photos of Apache leaders such as Geronimo and two Apache Scout Medal of Honors winners), philatelic and the Albert Cauchon sculptures collection, featuring over 1,000 Chilmark pewter statues by artists such as Don Polland and Michael Boyett. An original 1883 “Wanted” handbill/poster with a $1,600 reward for the “Arrest Stage Robber” offered by Sheriff A. J. Doran, Florence (Arizona

antiquesandauctionnews.net Territory), and a handwritten letter by Sheriff R.H. Paul from his Tucson office, earned $4,875. Also, a group of four cabinet cards and one stereo card, all depicting the legendary Apache Indian Chief

Geronimo, commanded $3,000. Internet bidding was provided by iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com and Auctionzip.com. Telephone and absentee bids were also

accepted. The full catalog could be viewed online, at www.HolabirdAmericana.com. For those attending the auction in person, all state and CDC regulations and protocols regarding the COVID-19 virus

were strictly enforced. To contact Fred Holabird, call 775-851-1859 or 844-492-2766 or email fredholabird@gmail.com.

An autographed card of James Marshall with vignette of Sutters Mill (Calif.) at left, “Discoverer of Gold in California, January 19th, 1848,” signed Jas. W. Marshall,” sold for $2,250. The Leadville (Colo.) presentation silver ingot, inscribed, “From Geo. W. Cook to Col. J. J. Slocum Leadville Col June 1881 965 fine,” about 23 troy ounces, 3.5 inches long, sold for $15,062.

The stock certificate for the New York and Pennsylvania Blue Stone Co. (1870), signed by president James Fisk, one of the fabled “Robber Barons” in mid1800s New York City, sold for $10,937. A gold ingot from the Vulture Gold Mine near Wickenburg, Arizona Territory, ca. 1911-14, weighing 391.17 grams, 825 fine gold, with a report copy, brought $37,355.

The California gold quartz watch chain, 14 inches long, with six rectangular sections of one inch each California gold quartz, attended by a gorgeous gold quartz horseshoe, sold for $9,062. An original 1865 tintype of George Armstrong Custer from a photograph taken The original photograph from around 1885 showing a stage coach and driver, by the iconic Civil War-era photographer Matthew Brady, 3.25-by-3.5 inches taken at Fort Grant in the Arizona Territory by Daniel A.
