James Christian Seagreaves (1913-97), known as Jim to many, and his wife, Verna, lived in Breinigsville, Pa. Jim was a revivalist potter who also worked as a machinist for much of his career.
Making redware pottery was technically his second career upon retirement in 1976, although he began potting prior to that. Seagreaves was known for his characteristic blending of styles that incorporated motifs and forms, techniques used by traditional Pennsylvania German potters and also that of modern 1950s ceramic art. He was especially known for press molding figural birds and using bold, brightly colored glazes. However, Seagreaves was also prolific on the wheel, where he turned mugs, bowls, and fat lamps, among other forms.
Jim was exempted from the draft during World War II because his work at the Bethlehem Steel plant was considered essential to the war effort. Later, he was a machinist for Air Products and Chemicals Inc. up until 1976. According to local historian Richard Orth, Seagreaves began experimenting with making redware pottery in the late 1940s.
Seagreaves was also known for his skillful sgraffito decorating. The mentioned press-molded birds were cast from original molds he created. Following his death, the majority of molds were destroyed to prevent reproductions. Aside from the molded work, he was very skilled at creating hand-built work
and throwing on the wheel. Among the rarer items he created were face jugs, fish whistles, figural dogs and people.
Early in Jim’s potting career, he had a source for locally dug clay.
Jimmy Epler dug clay for him in Fetherolfsville, a tiny intersection village in Kempton (Albany Township, Berks County) at the site of a short-lived 19th-century pottery thought to have belonged to the Brobst family. Epler lived in a primitive one-room stone homestead on the site in the 1960s.
During this period, he signed work with his initials, JS. This was mostly in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Jim soon changed to using

The show has grown and will have a special train layout on display by The Strasburg Model Railroad Club of New Jersey.
JCS due to the fact a period potter (John Snyder of Mohrsville, Berks County) used the initials JS, and he wanted to both stand alone and not take the risk of having pieces be mistaken for non-contemporary. The bulk of his redware pottery is signed JCS.
Verna (1913-2000) was a skilled folk painter, but unlike Jim never produced her artwork on a prolific scale. She was a music teacher by profession, teaching in the Alburtis and East Penn School District, from which she retired. She was also the organist and choir director for 28 years at Zion Lehigh Lutheran Church in Alburtis, and also for the Church of the Good Shepherd in
Alburtis. She was a watercolorist for roughly 40 years. Self-taught, Verna mainly worked in the Grandma Moses style of folk painting. Her work was exhibited in 1999 at the Historical Society of Berks County (now the Berks History Center). Like her husband, Verna’s artwork is known for the use of bold colors. She also assisted Jim in his pottery studio. She often signed pieces with herinitials, VAS, and also Verna.
The artistic couple married in 1941, first living in Alburtis, Pa., until 1961, when then moved to Breinigsville. In 1966, the Seagreaves joined the ReadingBerks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman. Their work is still regionally collected by those interested in Pennsylvania German arts.
In 2018, in Fogelsville, Pa., father/son auction team of Woody and Eric Zettlemoyer held three sales on behalf of Jim and Verna’s
The Wolf Museum of Music and Art was established through the lifelong teaching and collections of Dr. William A. Wolf and his wife, Frances Harkness Wolf. In 1899, Dr. Wolf began teaching classical piano in the city of Lancaster, Pa. He continued teaching until his death in 1965. In 1915, Dr. Wolf commissioned the construction of two Knabe concert grand pianos to his specifications for the then Wolf Institute of Music. They were completely rebuilt between 2000 and 2005.

Ephemera with ties to the Beatles is also expected to take the spotlight in this auction. Many examples are from the collection of concert organizer and the former director of marketing and promotions for VH1, Bo Overlock. A complete set of four life-size posters of “The Beatles” is estimated at $1,000-$2,000. They were published in London by Fan Foto around 1963. These rare unbacked posters are based on images taken from The Beatles’ appearance on ABCTV’s Ed Sullivan Show. A signed photo of John Lennon is estimated at $1,000$2,000. This black and white image from the 1960s is inscribed by Lennon near the lower left corner: “To Joanna from John Lennon.”
Props from some of the world’s most celebrated films will also headline this sale. A waist belt worn by Ian Keith as Rameses I in “The Ten Commandments” is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. This belt, worn in the classic movie directed by Cecil B.
DeMille in 1956, is decorated with an Egyptian gold medallion. It is framed in a shadowbox with six scenes from the film showing the belt. Auntie Em’s coffeepot from MGM’s 1939 “The Wizard of Oz” is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. This screenused gray enamel coffeepot has a hinged lid and was seen in the twister blackand-white sequences in the classic film. The pot is visible when Dorothy runs through the kitchen searching for her family while the
tornado is approaching. It was originally purchased from the 1970 MGM movie prop auction.
Now let’s focus on this event’s robust selections of decade-spanning comic books. There are 16 issues of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
This Silver Age Marvel Comics Group collection from 1966-67 is ungraded and includes numbers 39-48 and 50-56. One lot of “The Amazing Spider-Man”

Is Buying The Best Always The Best Advice?
By Shawn Surmick
“Buy the best you can afford!” This was one of the first pieces of advice given to me when I set out to learn the antiques and collectibles trade at the tender age of 12. Today, I strongly caution new collectors from taking this same advice. Believe it or not, this is actually bad advice when applied to certain collecting categories, thanks in part to the rise of third-party grading. Back when I was 12, third-party grading was a newfound concept that only applied to coins (yes, I am that old). Today, in the year 2023, everything from coins to sports cards to comic books, toys, video games, and even VHS movies are all being encased in plastic and given a numerical grade. Thirdparty grading has dominated the collectibles scene for quite some time, and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. As such, some pieces of advice do not age all that well depending on what one chooses to collect and why.
At present time, thirdparty graded collectors clamor to own their collectibles in the highest grade possible. They can even register them in online public collecting forums and receive prestige among other collectors for owning specific high-grade examples. The problem is, when dealing in established and mature collecting categories, most of the highest graded items sell for a
substantial premium. Just going one or two grades higher on an arbitrary grading scale can in certain instances mean the difference of tens of thousands of dollars in value, or in certain high-profile cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is why condition is such a major determining factor of value. If one is to own an Action Comics number one, a Mickey Mantle rookie card, or a 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, I can assure you, if authentic, you have something of value. However, that value cannot be quantified without assessing the item’s condition. This is where third-party grading comes in.
Since coins were the very first collectible to ever be both graded and encapsulated and also accepted by the coin collecting public, we can learn an awful lot as to how these markets work just by studying the fundamentals of coin collecting and apply some of these core concepts to other collecting markets. One of the best collecting and investing strategies I know came out of the coin collecting market. This concept is called the optimal collecting grade. The core concept of understanding the optimal collecting grade is discussed in the book “The Coin Collector’s Survival Manual” by Scott A. Travers. I have long argued that the best course of action for would-be collectors who wish to attempt to invest in the antiques and collectibles trade is to learn about other collecting markets and not just the ones the collector is passionate about. The optimal collecting grade is one such concept that can help someone save large sums of money, especially when operating in markets as speculative as collectibles.
So what exactly is the optimal collecting grade theory, and how can an advanced collector use this to his or her advantage? Quite simply, the optimal collecting grade is defined as
the grade at which a thirdparty graded collectible can be purchased that is a steep discount from a collectible that is one grade above it. For instance, let’s assume in this example that a collector is looking to buy a third-party graded high grade comic book. It does not matter what the comic book in question is. Now let’s assume that this graded comic book in 9.2 condition goes for an average price of $5,000, but the next grade up, which is a 9.4, goes for $7,000, and the next grade after that, a 9.6, goes for $15,000. The optimal collecting grade in this simplified scenario would be the 9.4 condition copy that sells for $7,000. Buying the 9.2 at $5,000 could result in some buyer’s remorse for that particular book, especially if one can get a better condition item for a fraction of the money already paid. On the flipside of the equation, paying more than twice the asking price of a 9.4 copy to simply get a 9.6 copy is unwise in this scenario. Therefore, a 9.4 graded copy is all the collector should aspire to own, whether buying for investment or just enjoyment. This is probably one of the most advanced collecting strategies a collector can use to optimize their collection’s value, but it does have its limits. Case in point, for more speculative collectibles like graded video games, toys, and even certain trading cards, the market does not have enough good long-term pricing data to be able to correctly assess values in each grade. That said, for markets like certain graded sports cards, comic books, coins, and currency, there are a lot of available tools to help assess the optimal collecting grade.
Ironically, one question I am routinely asked when I teach this core concept is, “If everyone used the optional collecting grade theory to purchase graded collectibles, wouldn’t that cause the prices for these collectibles that meet the definition of the optimal collecting grade to rise?” My answer is always the same, “I have been teaching this core concept to anyone that will listen since 2010. I assure you, the average collector does not buy out of logic, they buy out of emotion.” Interestingly enough, that is why I caution a lot of collectors from trying to invest in these markets. Most people buy collectibles out of emotion, but the best investments should be bought out of logic. I think a lot of collectors could learn about these markets just by offering to help a dealer out and see how they assess their chosen markets. It might just open the collector’s eyes as to the fundamental differences between a collector and one who buys to resell. I can assure you that the optimal collecting grade theory is a concept that almost every coin dealer I know has taught me, and it has paid me handsome dividends in other collecting markets like comic books and sports cards. To anyone paying multiples to acquire some of these third-party graded collectibles in today’s market, depending on what you are buying, you may be making a big mistake. To that I say, understand the concept of the optimal collecting grade.

Ruth, Mantle, Aaron Smash Their Way Into The Record Books During Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction
A 1952 Topps Mantle Graded PSA NM-MT 8 Sells For $1,095,000
It’s a ritual as old as time, watching Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Hank Aaron set records every time they step up to the auction block.
Heritage Auctions’ Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction, held Feb. 25 and 26, was a nearly sold-out auction realizing $22,291,645. More than 2,800 bidders help set new record highs for some of sports’ most coveted collectibles, cards, photos, bats and jerseys and other tools of the trade.
“You never know what bidders are going to respond to, and this weekend we had a significant number of new records, some of which took us by surprise,” says Chris Ivy, director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. “But that’s the beauty and thrill of auctions; every piece gets its day in the sun.”
Look no further than the auction’s top lot, a 1916
M101-4 Sporting News Babe Ruth rookie card graded SGC NM 7, which sold for $1,770,000. That’s the highest amount ever paid for an SGC-graded Ruth rookie. A photo of Ruth from the same era, when he was a scrawny Red Sox pitcher, sold for $468,000, a new record for a PSA/DNA Type I photo of Ruth.
Ruth wasn’t the only New York Yankees legend to hit it out of the park over the weekend. One of only 10 examples of Mickey Mantle’s 1968 Topps card graded PSA Gem Mint 10 smashed its $200,000 presale estimate to realize a staggering $510,000. That’s more than double the highest price ever paid for this card.
The pride of the Yankees
was on full display throughout this auction as other pinstripers’ pieces realized slugged their way past the half-million mark. A 1952 Topps Mantle graded PSA NM-MT 8 realized $1,095,000, and the only known 1948 Joe DiMaggio jersey sporting a black armband in honor of Ruth sold for $564,000.
Hank Aaron also hammered home a few records over the weekend. A slab of Adirondack 63A Aaron used in the 1961 All-Star game sold for $264,000, the most anyone has ever paid for one of his game-used bats. This one was extraordinary, too, as Aaron gifted the prized lumber to a young fan who came to the game wearing a “Henry Aaron” T-shirt. The game-used bat
wasn’t the only Aaron item to rack up record numbers. A 1968 Topps Aaron card graded PSA Gem Mint 10 sold for $174,000.
Also shattering pre-auction expectations was a complete set of PSA-graded 1953 Topps baseball cards, a Murderers’ Row of offerings so exceptional it’s ranked No. 4 on the PSA Set Registry. The collection, which counts among its lot 91 cards graded PSA Mint 9, sold for $705,000.
Ty Cobb likewise slid spikes up into the pile of record-setters over the weekend when the Georgia Peach’s 1911 M116 Sporting Life card with the blue background graded PSA NM-MT 8 sold for $174,000.

Frances Harkness Wolf, was also musically talented and taught musical theory at the institute. In 1950, Mrs. Wolf inherited furniture and china from her aunt, Marette Carver, who lived on the mainline outside Philadelphia. Many of the items she inherited date from the mid- to late 19th century and tastefully decorated their home in Lancaster. Many pieces of furniture inherited were made by Lancaster County craftsman Henry Slaugh.
The Wolfs were lifelong residents of Lancaster County. Mrs. Wolf, at the time of her death in 1973, established their home and music studio as a public charity known as the Wolf Museum of Music and Art. The museum has
recently been closed by the trustees, and the proceeds from the sale will be used to establish a musical scholarship program for aspiring Lancaster County music students.
An auction of the contents of the museum will be held live on Saturday, April 1, at 9 a.m., with live online bidding available through Live Auctioneers and HiBid. The Wolf Museum of Music and Art items will include Lots 1 to 305. The remainder of the sale will include various consignors. Conestoga Auction Company, a division of the Hess Auction Group, will be handling the deaccession. Conestoga Auction Company is located at 768 Graystone Road in Manheim, Pa.

Another item that captured collectors’ attention was Michael Jordan’s 1996

Civil War Movie Posters And Memorabilia
By William J. Felchner
The American Civil War was waged from 1861 to 1865, pitting North against South in one of history’s bloodiest conflicts. The Civil War, or the War Between the States, as it has also been called, lasted four years, three weeks and six days, resulting in a frightful 1,030,000 casualties and forever changing history. War has always been a fertile subject for Hollywood, and the American Civil War is no exception. Here are ten top Civil War movies and the collectible memorabilia they generated.
Culver City, Calif., which consumed unwanted sets from “King Kong” (1933) and “The Garden of Allah” (1936). “Gone with the Wind” took home nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming) and Best Actress (Vivien Leigh). “Gone with the Wind” (or simply GWTW) remains a huge favorite with collectors. A onesheet poster style DP (27-by41-inches), illustrated by Armando Seguso and depicting the Atlanta Bazaar scene, sold at auction for $20,000 in matted/framed condition. Other GWTW movie memorabilia and their winning auction bids include a signed David O. Selznick hardcover presentation script to costumer Walter Plunkett ($22,500), a big threesheet movie poster (41-by-78inches) in restored fine/very
fine condition ($16,730) and an Atlanta National Bank prop check made for the movie ($8,125).
2. “Shenandoah” (1965). Andrew V. McLaglen directed this sentimental film in which the Civil War violently intrudes on the lives of a neutral Virginia farmer and his family. James Stewart heads the cast as crusty widower Charlie Anderson, with Doug McClure, Glenn Corbett, Patrick Wayne, Rosemary Forsyth, Phillip Alford and Katharine Ross in support. A standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41-inches) in fine condition sold at auction for $131.45, while a complete eight-card lobby set in fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $103.97.

1. “Gone with the Wind” (1939). The mega blockbuster of Civil War films, “Gone with the Wind” is based on the sweeping 1936 historical novel by Margaret Mitchell. Set in the South, the David O. Selznick production was budgeted at a then-staggering $3.9 million and features Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell, Evelyn Keyes and Olivia de Havilland. One of the stunning achievements of the film was the simulated burning of Atlanta, accomplished via a $25,000 controlled inferno staged at MGM’s backlot in

An Indiana schoolteacher (Montgomery Clift) marries Southern belle Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor), joins the Union Army and searches for his missing wife and son amidst the chaos of the vanquished South. The Met Receives Gift Of Francesco Salviati’s Painting Of Bindo Altoviti,
One Of
The Most Exceptional Examples
Of Italian Renaissance Portraiture
Work Is First Major Painting On Stone To Enter The Museum’s Collection
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced it has received a gift of an exceptional oil painting by celebrated Italian artist Francesco Salviati (1510–63). Executed on a one-inch thick marble slab, the arresting portrait depicts Bindo Altoviti (1491–1557), a powerful Florentine banker and one of the most significant political opponents to the Medici rulers. The monumental work is the first painting on marble acquired by The Met. It is a gift from the trust of Assadour
O. Tavitian.
“Aso”
“The artistic importance and historic magnitude of this painting cannot be overstated,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French director of The Met. “Salviati’s work is simply extraordinary, both in its material aspect, on marble, and in its painterly execution.
The sumptuous portrait brilliantly captures the subject’s immense wealth and social position, while also conveying his bold, cultured, and independent nature. We are endlessly grateful to the late Aso
O. Tavitian for this transformative addition to our holdings of European paintings.”
“This extraordinary portrait adds immeasurably to The Met’s impressive collection of 16th-century Italian portraits. It is truly an honor and a thrill to add this remarkable painting to that group. Artists in 16th-century Rome often painted on slate. Painting on marble, however, was incredibly rare. I know of no other portrait of this large dimension on marble from the 16th century. Salviati returned to Rome in the early 1540s after an extended stay in Northern Italian artistic centers, such as Venice and Bologna, and the rich color and material opulence of this
portrait extends from there. It is easy to imagine Bindo engaging an artist to create his likeness on marble in a nonFlorentine manner as a defiant gesture against the Medici,” added Stephan Wolohojian, John Pope-Hennessy curator in charge of the department of European paintings.

Francesco Salviati (Francesco de’ Rossi), (Italian, 1510–63) painted Bindo Altoviti, ca. 1545, an oil on marble portrait at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of the Assadour O. Tavitian Trust, 2022 (2022.460), photograph courtesy Bruce M. White, 2020.
The MET
Florentine parentage, Bindo Altoviti was one of the wealthiest and most influential men of his day. He carried out a politically astute policy of loans to a succession of popes, the Venetian state, and European powers such as King Henry II of France. Leader of the Florentine community in Rome, he maintained a neutral position toward the Medici family until he became a supporter of the Farnese Pope Paul III (r. 1534–49). From the end of the 1540s, Bindo was openly anti-Medicean, and in 1554 he was finally declared a rebel by Cosimo I de’ Medici.
A major patron of the arts, Bindo had his likeness captured at various stages of his life: as a young man around 1512 by Raphael, and several years after Salviati’s portrait, in 1549 in a bronze bust by Benvenuto Cellini. No other sequence of portraits of a sitter, from youth to old age by such an exceptional constellation of artists, survives from the Renaissance.
Francesco de’ Rossi, better known as Francesco Salviati, is among the most iconic painters and draftsmen of the 16th century. He was Florentine by birth, but his career was marked by long periods spent in Rome and northern Italy, primarily Venice and Bologna. His panItalian style is evident in his naturalistic portrait of Bindo, created at the height of the banker’s career. Salviati depicts the bearded sitter wearing a cap and fur-lined coat, resting against plush red cushions with gold trim and tassels in front of an opulent green velvet curtain embroidered with satin-silk motifs.
