Pennsylvania boasts a long and storied past as one of the three largest producers of American stoneware. According to Phil Schaltenbrand’s opus on Pennsylvania stoneware, “Big Ware Turners,” Pennsylvania had as many as 300 stoneware manufacturers, and in 43 of the Commonwealth’s 67 counties. Three of those 300 were located in rural Clarion County, and one of those was the Hawthorn Pottery Company, located in the borough of Hawthorn.
A second Clarion County enterprise, Pioneer Pottery, was owned and operated by George W. Arblaster in New Bethlehem. The third, in nearby Curllsville, was owned and operated by W. P. Hamilton in the 1870s and ’80s. An examination of Pioneer Pottery will
be the subject of a companion article to this, but the focus here, is Hawthorn.
The history of the Hawthorn Pottery Company begins in 1894, when W. T. Putney and E. A. Hamilton purchased the land, buildings, and pottery making machinery from Arblaster, previously mentioned, from New Bethlehem.
The local newspaper, the New Bethlehem Vindicator, reported this transaction in a dispatch quoted by one of the leading trade journals of the time, “Crockery and Glass Journal”: “An important business transaction took place last week by which W. T. Putney of Allegheny and E. A. Hamilton, our present postmaster, got possession of what is styled the “Old Spring Factory” at West Millville (former name of Hawthorn). They bought the entire
The James Michener Art Museum is celebrating the historical and continued local interest in Japanese and Japanese American printmaking and illustration, as the exhibition “Mid-Century to Manga: The Modern Japanese Print in America” traces the story of the modern sosaku-hanga movement and other creative collectibles from Japan to the United States and beyond.
Highlighting original woodblock prints by modern Japanese printmakers and featuring 75 prints on paper, over two dozen of which have never been on display at the Michener Art Museum
before, the show will be open until July 30.
A prominent local story, the central feature of the exhibition is the display of three original copies of James Michener’s 1962 book “The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation.” For this project, the Michener Art Museum is engaging regional partners at the University of Pennsylvania to provide specific content-area expertise, with curation by the History of Art Department Chair, Julie Nelson Davis, and support from curatorial fellows Marina De Melo Do Nascimento, Maria
Puzyreva, and Nicholas M. Purgett.
The James Michener Art Museum is located at 138 S. Pine St. in Doylestown, Pa.

The last publication in a series about architecture and history of our European and American heritage, book five, titled, “Historic Preservation Movement,” hss been published as a tool for enlightenment and education. It chronicles the “preservation movement” that began to emerge, when the Daughters of the American Revolution became alarmed at the possible destruction of some of our most cherished structures, such as Carpenters Hall and Mount Vernon, the home of founding father, George Washington.
This book is a must for all historic and preservation organizations that seek purpose and guidance in their mission. It is a catechism for preservationists and the public to trace the course of our

awakening to the greatness of our institutions and the history that is reflected in our architecture.
This publication turns to the epiphany that occurred following the Civil War about the need to preserve our history and built environment. This work transitions ahead 100 years to the rise of suburbia and the founding of Levittown, where major changes occured in patterns of living. Americans left the farms and patronage of the businesses in small towns and cities and turned to developments, shopping centers, and big box stores.
Most helpful is the glossary consisting of full-color pictures that allows the professional and the novice to gain a vocabulary to describe various architectural features when doing field surveys of buildings.
The myriad of architectural styles are described with pictures on every page of the book, from English to Germanic style to the Federal period of architecture and then into the Victorian era period. A singular portion of
this work is devoted to the history of wallpaper. The later portions of the work list some of the basic federal and state statutory laws and court cases to familiarize the public with the authority for historic preservation. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and their successors are highlighted due to their support of the preservation movement.
Within each era of our history, architecture and the items of material culture it produced mirrored our aspirations and prosperity. At the dawn of the 19th century, America had no body of
literature, architecture or musical heritage to compare to European achievements on the world stage. Following the challenge by Britain in the War of 1812, in a burst of patriotic fervor, Americans began to take stock of their opportunity to create and establish extraordinary history, structures, art, literature and built environment. “Lady Liberty” gave way to the iconic image of the American eagle. This work chronicles the architectural history of each architectural era in our American experience. Each era reflects the values, aspirations and influence of the American experience at that time period.
As this process of introspection and nation building matured, an American identity began to be molded by our ancestors, who struggled for their families, churches and communities. People began to “take stock” of what great achievements we had to show to the world. While our history is not one without violence and other issues, it belongs to everyone.
For example, in literature, Mark Twain and his contemporaries began to be recognized as the quintessential American literary figures to the world. America no longer lived under the shadow of the great literary traditions of great European authors. Following the Civil War (1861-65), the public began to realize the importance of preserving our heritage at battlefields, historic sites and structures.
This book gives an overview to the movement on a national scale and serves as a useful glossary of regional architecture in Adams County, Pa. It is a call to all who are passionate about the the state’s history and “built environment” for a renewal of commitment to preserve historic sites and structures.
Book five, the last in the series, is a legacy publication that all historians can enjoy and utilize for reference. To learn more about this publication or books one to four, visit www.masthof.com.

plant from G. W. Arblaster, who had bought from the Spring Factory creditors and fitted it up for pottery. The consideration was $3,500.”It continued, “The new firm will be known as Putney and Hamilton. They are to get possession of the pottery on March 1, 1894. At that time, they will start up and commence to manufacture potteryware. It is their intention to push the business for all it is worth, which will require them to build an extra kiln and add considerable machinery and other equipment to the plant. This they will do as rapidly as their trade will permit.” Exactly what happened during the next few years is not entirely clear, but the Hawthorn Pottery Company was incorporated in 1899, with Hamilton a principal shareholder and president of the firm.
Pittsburgh, the nerve center of the glass and pottery trade in the region. This location served as a marketing, sales, and shipping center for Hawthorn, assuring products got sent down the Ohio river to points south and west.
While joining the astounding number of stoneware potteries that spanned for much of the state’s history, the later era Hawthorn joined those ranks in the declining years of stoneware production. Glass and metal containers were taking over the market. Still, it can be seen Hawthorn was not a small niche player but is reported to have employed as many as 100 workers at its prime and was noted to have produced as much at 600,000 gallons of product in a production year.
During the early 1920s, the plant passed into the control of the American Clay Products
Mint” jugs used by the Kola Mint Company in Williamsport, for its Kola Mint syrup, a knock-off soda competitor aimed at the Coca-Cola market.
On its invoices, Hawthorn identified itself as “Manufacturers of Bristol Glazed Stoneware.” Bristol glaze was a replacement or a refinement for the older-style lead glaze process. Specifically, it originated in 19th century Bristol, England, when less toxic zinc oxide was used to replace raw lead as a flux, hence the name Bristol glaze. These glazes were also more resistant to abrasion, weathering, and chemical attack as well as giving good, bright, hues of blue and green.
crocks and jugs, starting at gallon and a half crocks and jugs and possibly all the way to 60 gallons.
A number of crocks and jugs were glazed with a dark brown top and a light grey bottom, both by Arblaster’s pottery as well as those from Hawthorn. A few items, generally the larger crocks or jugs, have some added décor in the form of stars, brackets, or teardrops around the number designating the capacity.
Edward Alexander Hamilton, at the time of purchase, postmaster of New Bethlehem, was the second largest holder of the original shareholders, with 30 shares out of 200. His name was shown as president on a deed dated in 1903, transferring a portion of Hawthorn’s real estate to the Allegheny Valley Railway Company for the purpose of building a railway siding at the pottery. Hamilton was born in 1858 and died in 1943. In addition to his role with Hawthorn and his position as postmaster his obituary indicates he also operated a foundry in New Bethlehem.
There are indications Hawthorn thrived during the first two decades of the 20th century. An agreement had been reached for the mining of “potters clay” from the Redbank Creek for a royalty of 20 cents per long ton (2,240 pounds). Also, more land and a railroad siding was added. By 1909, Hawthorn had offices in
Company of Zanesville, Ohio, a holding or “selling” corporation that was formed in 1919, probably to control prices and assure the continuance of firms having financial difficulties.
Before closing the door on Hawthorn, let’s look at what those 100 workers might have produced in such volume during Hawthorn’s prime. An invoice dated 1900 lists 11 products: butter pots, dutch pots, bean pots, milk pans, stew pans, mixing bowls, fruit jars, preserve jars, tie jars, jugs, and cuspidors. This list is hardly allinclusive and clearly is oriented toward food stuffs and kitchen usage, with the exception of cuspidors, which are typically refered to as spittoons.
Other sources and records list water coolers, bread crocks, umbrella stands, pitchers, butter churns, vitrified acid jars, snuff jars, and other diverse, decorative, or specialty products. One of the best known of the latter is the half pint “Kola
The main product line were utilitarian jugs and crocks. Hawthorn jugs are found in sizes from one-half gallon to five gallons, and most crocks were from one-half to 20 gallons, though crocks of 30, 50, and even 60 gallons were being produced. The latter was reported in the following note from the Oct. 2, 1896, edition of the New Bethlehem Vindicator: “Miner Knots, one of the turners in the Hawthorn Pottery, turned out some huge jars last week. The largest one has a capacity of 60 gallons. The clay used in its manufacture weighing 160 pounds. This pottery has had an unusual demand for large ware this fall.”
Items marked with a capacity number in gallons usually have “arrowheads” on each side of the numeral as illustrated in accompanying photos. This seems to be a distinctive Hawthorn Pottery Company mark. In addition to the capacity numeral and the “arrowheads,” many items have stenciled upon them either “H. P. Co. Hawthorn, Pa.” or “Hawthorn Pottery Company, Hawthorn, Pa.” All marks are bright cobalt blue, which contrasts nicely with the light grey glaze on the clay, the most common color for Hawthorn stoneware. A considerable number of jugs and crocks were marked only with the numerical capacity of the container and with the ever-present arrowheads. Capacity and decorative adornments were found only on items larger than the most common gallon and half-gallon
While “H. P. Co. Hawthorn, Pa.” or “Hawthorn Pottery Company, Hawthorn, Pa.” stencils were applied on much, if not all, of Hawthorn’s production, additional custom-stenciled products were produced for a number of customers and merchants whose businesses found a benefit from using and displaying stoneware promoting their business name and locale. Examples of these hail from businesses in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York, as shown in one of the accompanying photos.
Hawthorn, in Clarion County, is located three counties too far to the west of what would be described as “Central Pennsylvania” by Jeanette Lasansky in her 1979 treatment of more than two dozen potteries in that 12-county area. This excellent work is known to all pottery collectors and titled “Made of Mud – Stoneware Potteries in Central Pennsylvania, 1831-1929.”
Lasansky’s detailed description of the day-to-day operations of those potteries and their owners and employees illusrates the kind of issues dealt with during the operation of Hawthorn. Lasansky’s work gives the reader a greater appreciation of the skills and effort required to produce these items, which, in many cases, are highly collectible today. With the majority of Hawthorn pieces being from the early 20th century and semi-prolific in numbers, the work represents both a regional collectible and accessible entry point for beginner collectors.

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: My Weakness
writing about furniture from the 18th century. When studying regional furniture, clocks are a great source of information. If one can identify a clock by maker and location then one can get a reasonable geographic range of where the case was produced. And a quick reminder that other than a few cases, clockmakers purchased their cases from local cabinet shops.
By Peter Seibert
So I have to confess a weakness. It is one that has made my home and office way too cluttered. I love tall case clocks, aka grandfather clocks. They are cool to look at, wonderful to listen to, and, of course, represent the work of multiple highly skilled trades. In fact, so important were they that they are often the most expensive items listed on estate inventories in the 1700s.
My love for tall case clocks goes back decades to my graduate school days when I was actively researching and
A few years later I was talking to my friend and mentor John Snyder. Now John was the king of tall case clock collecting. Yes, there are many collectors out there in the world of clocks, but John was the only private collector that I knew who had more than 120 clocks in his personal collection. John’s passion was studying regionalism in the clocks, and I learned so much from him about where clocks came from and what made them unique. He had the eye to look at a case and immediately tell you that it was from Jonestown, Lebanon County, or perhaps made by a shop along the Susquehanna River
between Harrisburg and Marietta. Years of study had honed his skills to see those quirks in the cases that pointed to where a piece was made.
Personally, at that time, I could never have afforded a tall case clock. They were the purview of the lawyers. As I used to joke, there was not a single lawyer in Lancaster County who did not have at least one tall case clock in their offices. Like in the 18th century, they were the most valuable thing for many people to own. I watched as clocks went from four to five to six figures. It was a fever of collecting that I thought would never break.
Well, the fever broke when the market in brown furniture came apart. The passion for a clock in every counselor’s office was gone, and the prices fell. Now, mind you, the very rarest clocks still bring solid prices, and, of course, if it is a brass dial eight-day movement then values are also solid. But for the guy who really was passionate about clocks but could never afford them, it
is now a whole new world. Last week at Conestoga Auction Co., I ended up buying three clocks. Yes, after the first one it became far too easy to bid. And so in the end, as I write this column, I cannot tell whether it is 1 or 3 p.m., because of the number of clocks that are chiming.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania,Wyoming,Virginia andNewMexico.Inaddition,he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

American West Proves To Be An Emerging Market
Historic Items In Many Categories Sold In Two-Day Western Americana Sale
An archive of material pertaining to Old West author, artist and historian Ernest L. Reedstrom (1928-2003) sold for $2,625; a USS Utah photo diary of the Tampico Affair of 1914 and the invasion of Veracruz, Mexico, brought $1,750; and a ca. 1894-96 Oriental coffin flask out of Lamar, Colo., lavender in color, realized $1,500 in Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC’s Treasures
From the Shelves Auction held Feb. 18 and 19, live and online.
The auction featured over 1,400 lots in many collecting categories, to include mining, bottles, stocks, philatelic, militaria, Native Americana, numismatics and general Americana. It was an “autopilot auction” according to Fred Holabird. Every lot opened at $10.
Day one contained 757 lots in the categories minerals and mining, general Americana and bottles. The Ernest L. Reedstrom archive was one of the top lots. The archive consisted of seven boxes of materials, including manuscripts and drafts of book chapters and other articles written by Reedstrom. All were from the period of time between 1960s-1990s. Reedstrom wrote several books about the American West, including “Apache Wars: An Illustrated Battle History,” “Historic Dress of the Old West,” and “Custer’s 7th Cavalry: From Fort Riley to the Little Bighorn.” As an artist, he was known for his paintings and drawings of the Old West. The most intriguing pieces in the collection were original illustrations done by Reedstrom.
In early April 1914, the USS Utah was sent to the Gulf port of Tampico to take aboard American refugees who were caught up in the diplomatic conflict. Later that month, the Utah was part of an invasion force sent by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson to capture
the Mexican port of Veracruz. The photo diary in the Holabird auction was a veritable time capsule of those events. The 91 Real Photo Postcards (RPCs) and handwritten notes on the back appeared to have been written by USMC Charles (“Chas”) Range to his beloved Bea. His rank and military assignment are unknown. But the images and notes were a unique and powerful first-person photo diary of events that unfolded in the dispute between the U.S. and Mexico during the Mexican Revolution.

mining claims in Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Montana, Washington, California and possibly other states, mostly sent between George Gluck and other individuals involved in the mining industry, discussing the various mining properties in great detail, in four huge binders, fetched $812.50.
A set of 25 “Hitleriada Furiosa” and “Hitleriada Macabra” prints by Stanislaw Toegel, from 1945 and 1946, commanded $1,500. Toegel was a lawyer, amateur artist and Polish Army reservist officer. Captured after the fall of Poland in 1939, he escaped and served with the Polish resistance until being taken prisoner once again in the aftermath of the ill-fated
Warsaw uprising. Sent to a labor camp at Gottingen, Germany, Toegel was forced to work at a paper mill where, at the risk of instant execution, he drew cartoons ridiculing Hitler and his cohorts, some depicting the atrocities meted out by Hitler’s henchman and the cruel depravity of their regime. In 1946, the cartoons were compiled and published in limited quantities.
