Dan Strawser, Folk Carver Profile In Pennsylvania German Studies
By Karl Pass
“He’s the one who inspired me to start,” remarked Dan Strawser, speaking about Lester Breininger’s influence in getting him started with woodcarving in the late 1960s. Daniel Strawser Sr. was born in Robesonia, Pa., in 1943. His folk carving career is over five decades
old, and famous 19th-century carver Wilhelm Schimmel was a major stylistic influence. Strawser grew up on Penn Avenue across the street from James Spears. Spears was an author/local historian and collector of epic proportions. His book, “House of Derr,” was first published in 1949. A second printing was done in 1973. It is a compilation history of
the Derr family, notably metalsmith Peter Derr (1793-1868). “Spears’ wife was an antiques dealer and had a shop in the barn,” stated Strawser. Spears died in 1961 and was very active in the 1940s. Pennypacker’s had a series of estate sales for him in the early 1960s.

Rare 1953 Corvette Confirmed For The Spring Carlisle Collector
Car Auction
Sale To Take Place At Carlisle Expo Center On April 21
Three hundred. That’s how many 1953 Corvettes were produced when what’s now known as the C1 was originally produced. Fast forward to Friday, April 21, in Carlisle, Pa., and one of those original 300 (serial #100) will cross the auction block. That’s right, a 1953 Corvette will be up for grabs as part of Carlisle Auctions’ Classic and Collector Car Auction at the Carlisle Expo Center. It will be a two-day
event on April 20 and 21. In 70 years, nearly 2 million Corvettes have been built and sold. This is the 100th ever created.
The auction starts at noon each day, and the fact that a 1953 Corvette is even crossing the block is nothing short of a big deal. The National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS), the premier authority on all things Corvette, has judged only 60 ’53s all time, and, rarer yet,

over the last five years, only 16 ’53s are known to have sold. Most have sold through “as seen on TV” auction houses. Currently, there’s only one other known active sale for a ’53 and it is part of a non-auction/boutique dealership sale.
With this ’53, it’s the first time such an iconic and rare ride will be made available by Carlisle Auctions. Built in October of 1953, this car was delivered by Tom Hoskins of Hoskins Chevrolet in Chicago to a prominent man of the time, Cyrus Rowlett
(C.R.) Smith. He was the founder and CEO of American Airlines from 1934-68 and again from 1973-74. Smith also served as a Major General and as the wartime deputy commander of the Air Transport Command during World War II. He also served under President Lyndon B. During this time, Strawser worked at the Publix shirt factory located in Myerstown in the pattern department. In 1985, the company transfered him to Tennessee. In 1993, the plant closed, which was when he began carving on a full-time basis. From 2002 to 2008, Strawser lived in Coatesville, Pa., and in 2008, moved to Maine following his wife, Donna, retiring from teaching,. Pop, Goes The Funko! Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Nintendo, Lego, Pokemon, Hasbro, and Funko Pop made a lot of money during this period. Some of these companies handled inventory allocations much better than others, and even with known shortages, the secondary market for a lot of these products surged.
By Shawn Surmick
It wasn’t long ago that speculation in pop culture collectibles became common. Fueled in part by easy money being handed out by the government and the fact that almost everyone was stuck indoors, both the internet and nostalgia became an escape. Companies that either catered to the online buying and selling of modern-era mass-produced collectibles, or the collectible manufacturers themselves, did well during these boom times. While shortage and supply chain issues were expected, most producers of modern mass-produced collectibles tried to find ways to keep up with consumer demand. Companies like
Corvette
Nemours. Under the trunk bulkhead is the #100, further solidifying its place in the production line. This is not a restoration piece, though it has been re-painted. It’s also won numerous awards, including as recently as 2021 when it was tapped as the NCRS’ Top Flight Award winner.
Through it all, I cautioned a lot of collectors and starryeyed speculators that this was a statistical anomaly, nothing more than a black swan event that would not last. Some agreed, but others did not and went all in paying extremely high prices for not only modern-era mass-produced collectibles, but also vintage collectibles. As a result, once the pandemic ended, most of these high prices fell hard. Even the vintage higher end comic book market was not immune, with prices correcting anywhere from 10 to 40 percent on a lot of major key issues. It was also during this time that the great graded video game speculative bubble that was allegedly propped up by certain grading companies and auction houses started to deflate. This sent a shockwave through the market, with some longtime collectors heading towards the exit. I firmly believe that the

period of the pandemic will be looked at and studied by both historians and economists for decades to come. I also believe that certain pop culture collectibles that hit new price records during this time will most likely never achieve some of those same price points in the near future (sorry, graded video game collectors).
All that said, there is one interesting development here.
I actually thought that a lot of the modern-day collectible manufacturers would have done a better job of managing their inventory levels and realizing that most of this buying frenzy was nothing more than speculative euphoria. One such collectibles manufacturer that ended up in deep trouble as a result of not doing this was none other than Funko, makers of the incredibly popular, yet ugly Funko Pop line of vinyl figures. If you don’t know what a Funko Pop is, you would be forgiven. The product line is reminiscent of either Beanie Babies or PEZ dispensers, so choose your comparable poison carefully. Funko Pop enthusiasts collect, buy, and speculate on these deformed vinyl figures made from the toxic chemical vinyl chloride
“It’ll roll across the auction block with all original hardware still intact and drives
(true fact, look it up) based on popular pop culture franchises. There are Funko Pop figures based on “Star Wars” characters, Disney characters, comic book characters, “Pokemon” characters, and even short-lived television series. I often refer to the craze simply as Beanie Babies 2.0 for a generation that does not understand the simple concept of mass-produced scarcity. And speaking of mass-produced scarcity, the company that makes these deformed little creatures does a great job of limiting production on certain figures and retiring others (ah yes, where have we heard the term “retire” before? Yes, Beanie Babies). This has set off a speculator craze bigger than the entire Beanie Baby market during its heyday.
Unfortunately, most Funko Pop enthusiasts are on the younger side and do not see the proverbial writing on the wall. They argue that since these products are based on other pop culture franchises, they will always be sought after by those collectors. Unfortunately, I personally know of no vintage “Star Wars” toy collector who wants to add Funko Pops to their collection. This was the same
as it did when it was brand new 70 years ago. In fact, its current owner still drives it
argument used by PEZ enthusiasts back in the 1990s. Today, we know the truth. The PEZ market has been in a near downward spiral for many years, and even vintage dispensers are selling for similar prices and sometimes less than what they sold for during their peak in the 1990s. If you want to learn about the PEZ speculative bubble and have a subscription to Netflix, I recommend you watch the fascinating documentary called “The PEZ Outlaw.”
So what does this have to do with Funko Pops, you may be wondering. In the beginning of March 2023, it was announced that Funko, the company that makes Funko Pop figurines, would be sending over $30 million worth of stale unsold inventory to the landfill. The company that makes these products is a publicly traded company and announced the decision in a disclosure to investors. Wall Street, of course, reacted negatively to the news, while almost every major media outlet ran with the story (simply do an internet search of Funko and landfill, and you will see what I mean). Sadly, and as expected, this did not deter the starry-eyed speculators from

defending this strategy. These speculators see this as a rough patch before their limited edition “Star Wars” variant Funko Pop can accelerate to new heights on the secondary market. Welcome to Beanie Babies 2.0. And if you find that too dramatic, how about PEZ 2.0? Either way, we all know how this ends. Will some of these Funko Pops hold their value and potentially increase on the secondary market? It sure is possible, as certain Beanie Babies still command a premium on internet auction sites. That said, instead of speculating in deformed vinyl figurines that were never removed from their original box to preserve their market value and condition, how about getting an S&P 500 index fund instead, or at least some vintage “Star Wars” figures that we know are scarce and already valuable? Nah, I guess that just isn’t as fun? Until next time.

California Gold Rush Sunken Treasure From Legendary “Ship of Gold” Sold At Auction
Historic Artifacts Of Gold Rush Life And Recovered From 1857 Sinking Of The S.S. Central America Brought Strong Prices
From lumps of coal and crewmembers’ keys to tableware and exquisite jewelry, collectors bid $1.1 million to acquire 422 lots of historic, sunken treasure California Gold Rush-era artifacts recovered from the 1857 sinking of the fabled “Ship of Gold,” the S.S. Central America. The twoday auction, March 4 and 5, was conducted live in Reno, Nev., and online by Holabird Western Americana Collections.
“We had about 7,000 registered bidders, including some from Canada, Europe, and South America. Many collectors were waiting for these extraordinary items to come on the market since the legendary, submerged ship was located in 1988 and Life magazine proclaimed it America’s greatest treasure ever found,” said Fred Holabird, president of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “This was an incredible time capsule of the California Gold Rush era.”
One of the auction highlights was a massive 32.15ounce gold bar created in San Francisco by prominent Gold Rush assayers John Glover Kellogg and Augustus Humbert. The two-pound gold ingot sold for $138,000, far above its current gold content value of about $59,000. The assayers’ value at the time it was created was $586.17.
“The S.S. Central America was carrying tons of Gold Rush treasure from San Francisco
and the northern California area when she sank 7,200 feet deep in the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast in a hurricane while on a voyage from Panama to New York City in September 1857. Recovery from the shipwreck site occurred in several stages between 1988 and 1991 and again in 2014,” explained scientist Bob Evans who was on each of the recovery missions and assisted with the auction.
Among the recovered jewelry items was a large 18-karat gold quartz engraved brooch that prominent San Francisco businessman Samuel Brannan, California’s first millionaire, was sending to his son in Geneva, Switzerland, as a gift to the son’s teacher. It sold for $49,200.
“Brannan was the Jeff Bezos of his day: a successful entrepreneur, newspaper owner, and California’s first millionaire,” said Dwight Manley, managing partner of California Gold Marketing Group, consignor of the sunken treasure.
Among the 45 other recovered jewelry pieces in the auction was a REGARD ring, named for the first letter of each of the five gemstones it contains: ruby (missing from the ring), emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby, and diamond. It sold for $14,400.
Other highlights included a 19th-century daguerreotype metal plate photograph of a young woman. The scientific
mission recovery team nicknamed the unidentified woman “Mona Lisa of the Deep” after retrieving the photo in 2014 from the seabed, where it was discovered in a scattered pile of the ship’s coal. It sold for $73,200.
The only known, complete treasure box from the 1850s California Gold Rush period brought $6,300. An embossed wax seal on the box is still easily readable as “Alsop & Co.,” renowned merchants and gold treasure shippers of the era. Among the recovered clothing items was an early Brooks Brothers shirt that sold for $2,760.
The specially-built, six-ton, remotely operated underwater vehicle nicknamed “Nemo” that was used by scientists and engineers to locate and recover the S.S. Central America treasures deep on the Atlantic Ocean seabed also sold and brought $43,200.
A porthole from what is believed to be Captain William Lewis Herndon’s topside cabin went for $22,200. Gold wire-rim eyeglasses retrieved from the wreck site a mile-and-a-half below the surface sold for $13,800. A set of gold cufflinks brought $12,000. The remains of a recovered 1851 Colt Navy pistol realized $2,760. A contemporary counterfeit Mexican

Original Unrestored Film Posters To Sell Online
Inaugural Sale For Georgia Auction House Will Take Place On April 15
Newly formed Opportunities 2 Auction House, based in Macon, Ga., will introduce itself to the collecting community with an online auction of original, unrestored vintage movie posters on Saturday, April 15, starting at 10 a.m. Over 140 lots will come up for bid from a single consignor. The catalog is live now and open for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.com.
“These posters were purchased in the ’90s from the estate of a theater proprietor,” said Karen Braswell, the owner of Opportunities 2 Auction House. “They’ve been stored ever since and have never been traded or sold. It’s like opening a time capsule. Many were never used for display and were still in the envelope, as originally shipped to the theater.”
The posters span four decades, from the 1960s to the 1990s. They include all genres, from action/adventure to musicals to horror, so there is something for just

the two monsters engaged in battle, measures 22-by-28 inches.
The movie was filmed in Japan and features an all-Japanese cast. Speaking of apes, a onesheet poster for “Go Ape!” (20th Century Fox, 1974), from that year’s Planet of the Apes Film Festival, promoted the 1974 reissue of all five of the Planet of the Apes films, which enjoyed a huge audience.
A one-sheet poster for “The Italian Job” (Paramount, 1969), the classic caper film starring Michael Caine and a cult favorite, boasts fabulous graphics, making it one of the most highly sought after
movie posters of the 1960s. Elvis fans rejoice! The King will appear multiple times in the auction, including on a threesheet poster, 41-by-79 inches, for the film “Spinout” (MGM, 1966), co-starring Shelley Fabares of The Donna Reed Show fame, in two panels as originally produced, and a 14by-36 inch insert for “Viva Las Vegas” (MGM, 1964), co-starring Ann-Margret, with color as vibrant as the movie itself, which paired two of the biggest stars of the time.
Both Beatles movies that featured the Fab Four in live acting roles will be in the sale, including a three-sheet poster for “HELP!” (United Artists, 1965), in near-mint condition with
vibrant colors, two panels as originally printed, and a onesheet poster for “A Hard Day’s Night” (United Artists, 1964), the group’s black-and-white debut film (the poster is in color), directed by Richard Lester, co-
starring Wilfred Brambell as Paul’s grandfather.
In addition to “Jaws,” the horror genre will include a three-sheet poster for “Frankenstein Conquers the World,” starring Nick Adams,
and a one-sheet poster for “Destroy All Monsters,” with Andrew Hughes, artwork for both by Reynold Brown. Both films were distributed in 1969 by American International and featured American and Japanese actors.
A three-sheet, one-panel poster for “Once Upon a Time in the West” (Paramount, 1969)
is in near-mint condition. The movie was one of the greatest Westerns ever filmed and also had a star-studded cast, one that included Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson and Jason Robards.

The one-sheet poster for “JAWS” (Universal, 1975), directed by Steven Spielberg, with Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss, is visually arresting, with shark graphic.
A half-sheet poster for “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (Universal, 1963) depicts the two monsters engaged in battle and measures 22-by-28 inches.
Elvis Presley will appear multiple times in the auction, including this three-sheet poster, 41-by-79 inches, for the film “Spinout” (MGM, 1966), co-starring Shelley Fabares.

Houdiniana Sale To Feature Historically Important Materials
Unpublished Documents, Props, And Personal Relics From Legacy Magician To Sell April 8
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce a 345-lot sale to be held on Saturday, April 8, starting at 10 a.m. CDT. This event, featuring Harry Houdini (born Erik Weisz, 1874–1926) themed merchandise, will be held live at Potter & Potter’s gallery in Chicago, Ill. It will also be live-streamed
at www.potterauctions.com. Phone and absentee bids are welcome.
The unique collection of Houdini’s signature apparatus make up several of the top expected lot slots. Houdini’s strait jacket escape jacket is estimated at $50,000$100,000. This heavy canvas
jacket is reinforced with leather across the neck, back, arms, and waist. The fabric is worn from use but overall intact and well-kept. This remarkable piece of magicana history is accompanied by numerous documents, newspaper articles, and photographs tracing the ownership of the jacket from Houdini to his brother, Hardeen, and then to Hardeen’s assistant, magician Armand Landry. Houdini’s packing crate is estimated at $40,000-$80,000. This ca. 1915 wooden crate was used by Houdini to transport his props and personal articles on two transatlantic voyages. It retains numerous trip labels as well as a notation in Houdini’s hand, reading, “All Strait Jackets, Oct. 1920.” It is accompanied by a protective wooden and plexiglass display stand. The crate comes with a COA from Sidney Radner, a former owner and a noted Houdini collector. This crate was among the original Houdini memorabilia featured on the NBC Television special “Houdini: Unlocking His Secrets” and was exhibited for many years at the Magic and Movie Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, Nev.
Houdini’s “spirit cabinet” escape is estimated at $30,000-$60,000. This furniture-grade hardwood constructed prop is outfitted with brass handles and locks. In performance, Houdini was
placed atop a short fourlegged base, and then a series of four open boxes was lowered over him, one at a time, each successive section being locked and secured to the others below it. Once enclosed, four separate metal rods were lowered through holes in the apparatus, further locking them together. Even so, after being only briefly concealed, Houdini “dematerialized” from the device, which, when examined by a committee from the audience,
was shown to still be solidly and securely fastened together. This prop comes with a COA by Houdini collector Sidney Radner, a former owner of the device, and a photograph of the concealed internal mechanism.
Extraordinary posters and broadsides promoting Houdini appearances are also well represented in this sale. “Harry Houdini King of Cards” is estimated at $12,000$18,000. It was printed in Chicago by National Printing
and Engraving around 1898. This half-sheet, linen-backed, color poster was used by Houdini as a young performer and features his bust portrait at the center and vignettes depicting his facility with a deck of cards above and below. This is one of the first posters produced to advertise the magician just before he attained fame. “The World Famous Houdini/Master Mystifier” is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. This ca. 1925

three-color card is printed on heavy stock and was made to advertise a Chicago venue of Houdini’s final U.S. tour. It is only one of two examples known for this appearance and found in the rafters of a Chicago bungalow along with other theatrical posters. It was the subject of a segment on the PBS TV series, “The History Detectives.” “First Performance of the Water Torture Cell” is estimated at $5,000-$8,000. It was printed in Berlin by Plakat-Druckerei
evening clothes, with a seaside backdrop featuring the Coney Island Elephant hotel.
A transatlantic photo album is estimated at $5,000-$8,000. This oblong album holds six total mounted silver gelatin print photos of Houdini and his wife aboard the S.S. Imperator on their trip to Europe from America in 1913. This is a rare and personal keepsake from the Houdini family’s own files.
An inscribed and signed portrait is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. This ca. 1906 half-length portrait of
sale. A collection of nine “Grim Game” mini lobby cards is estimated at $15,000-$20,000. These were produced in New York by Famous Players-Lasky Corporation in 1919. This set of matte-finish sepia tone images was issued to promote the film at various theaters. Not to be confused with movie stills, these studio-issued cards are rarities in their own right and are the only examples of their kind that the auction house experts have encountered or traced at auction.
Houdini’s S.A.M. 1918 banquet committee badge is estimated at $3,000-$5,000. It was made in Reading, Pa., by The Weber Badge and Novelty Co. in 1918. It consists of a framed, celluloid bust portrait of Houdini, a multi-colored ribbon, hardware spacers, and a celluloid badge reading, “The Society of American Magicians/Committee/Banq uet 1918,” with decorative scrollwork. A bronze bust of Houdini is estimated at $1,500-$2,500. It was made in Glendale by Spectral
Eduard Jackel in 1912. This letterpress broadside heralded an appearance of Houdini on Sept. 21, 1912 (and the following day), at the Circus Busch, the famous German variety theater, presenting for the first time his Water Torture Cell escape, the first public performance of this signature feat. Also on offer are remarkable images of Houdini over the course of his life. A tintype portrait of Houdini as a young man is estimated at $6,000$9,000. This ca. 1891 full-length image of Houdini was likely taken at Coney Island. He is seated on a bench and wearing a boater, bow tie, and
Houdini was taken at the age of 30 and was used to promote the publication of his periodical, Conjurer’s Monthly Magazine. Important books by, about, or owned by Houdini are certain to catch the eye of collectors worldwide. “A
Magician Among the Spirits” is estimated at $6,000$12,000. This first edition was published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1924. This copy is inscribed, signed, and initialed by Houdini to fellow magician Howard Thurston.
Ephemera, artwork, and other important Houdiniana round out this can’t-miss
Motion, a Hollywood special effects company, in the 2000s. This finely sculpted bust of the famed magician in coat and bow tie has Houdini’s name lettered on the plinth below his likeness. It is numbered 13/40 and measures 12.5 inches tall.
“We’ve offered many rarities and props from Houdini’s life, dating back to our first sale in 2008. And yet, the hits keep on coming. This offering of
Houdiniana is among the best we have brought to market, as it includes such a diverse range of objects from his storied career. Personal favorites include several association copies of books inscribed by Houdini to fellow magicians (Howard Thurston, T. Nelson Downs, and W.J. Hilliar),
though it is hard to dispute that a Houdini packing case, strait jacket, or the mirror from his Harlem brownstone are showstoppers, too,” said Gabe Fajuri, president at Potter & Potter Auctions.

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends of the Mid-20th Century
By Donald-Brian Johnson
Letters, I get letters. (Well these days, they’re mostly emails). Often, they’re questions dealing with the care and repair of the things that people collect. The most common strains I find running through repair questions are “Could I?” “Should I?” and “How can I?”
“Could I?” is the easiest to answer. With enough super glue or tape you could repair practically anything. You just might not be happy with how it turns out. That’s where “Should I?” enters in.
Ever peruse those “homes for sale” ads? You’ll see ones for “executive retreats” in “secluded, lavish surroundings” (translation: “very pricey”). Then there are “family friendly” homes in a “bustling neighborhood.” (In other words, there’s a day care operation on either side, a grade school across the street, and the freeway is just beyond the back yard.) And, of course, there are the “great fixeruppers” (code for: “You get what you pay for”).
When assessing repair feasibility, look to the realtors’ lingo. If the price you paid for an item years back still makes you gasp, you’ll probably opt for the gold standard: professional repair.
A talented technician will restore the integrity and strength of your piece with a bonding material that won’t re-break, and will also expertly match colors, so that the repair is nearly invisible. Each collector must decide if the value of a piece outweighs its repair charge.
Most questions, however, deal with “family friendly” collectibles: items that were either purchased in a lessthan-perfect state, or “somehow got that way.” Leading the question parade: paper goods, ceramics, and glassware.

* Paper goods. These were meant to last for only a short time, and their intrinsic materials were not particularly durable. In answer to the frequent query, “There are a few tears. Should I tape them?” the answer is “it depends.” If it’s a piece of sheet music you’ve acquired just so you can play it, tape away. It will make your piano-playing life a lot easier.
If collecting for display, more consideration is needed. You can carefully tape a tear on the reverse. (Never use glue, which will bleed
through.) Minor creasing is acceptable, and original handwritten greetings can add to an item’s charm, but avoid purchasing paper goods with crumbling edges or water spotting. These fall in the realtor’s “great-fixer-upper” category.
* Ceramics. Almost every ceramics collector has experienced the agony of a nick, a crack, a beheading or an amputation. Once this happens, you must decide what to do—attempt to repair it, or leave it “as is.”
Most collectors will settle for “as is,” if the nicks or cracks aren’t overtly obvious.
A ceramic M’amselle figurine, created by Betty Harrington, principal designer for Madison’s Ceramic Arts Studio, suffered an unfortunate accident in transit. Here is a before and after athome repair, the hairline crack in M’amselle’s right shoulder now barely noticeable.
As for complete breaks, if the value does not justify professional restoration, a light application of quick-bonding gel glue, followed by a deft use of colored chalk at the break line, can often make a clean break undetectable. (If professional restoration is a future possibility, use a nonpermanent glue).
* Glassware. We’re now in the do-it-yourself equivalent
of the doctor who shakes his head and somberly intones, “There’s nothing we can do.” If glassware is broken, keep this in mind before grabbing for the glue: it’s glass. It’s transparent. When glued, the fault

Some things in life are always going to be less than perfect. When it comes to what you collect, if you can accept that fact of life without grinding your teeth down to the gumline, then why not? In Japan, they call this state of
mind wabi-sabi: honoring the imperfect. So the hairline crack on the neck of that ceramic angel is still slightly visible. Can you happily accept the piece with its minor imperfection? OK then. That’s wabi-sabi.

This was an easy repair for an all-wood Angel Band, with figurines that were detached from their base. Application of wood glue restored them to their original positions.
While not a perfect repair, this amateur reconstruction of a damaged Lladró Seesaw figurine is acceptable. Originally, the piece had broken into seven segments.

This Vogue Picture Record from the 1940s was found with smoke discoloration. Since the purchase price was extremely low, cleaning experimentation was an option. After several unsuccessful attempts, a vigorous application of “Chrome Polish and Rust Remover” removed the grime without damaging the record.

Bob Cunningham. Together with moderator Ellen Denker, they will explore collecting American belleek. The Mint’s exhibition will feature more than 80 works drawn from the museum’s permanent collection and notable U.S. public and private collections. A fully-illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibition, and the show will remain on view until Jan. 21, 2024.
Belleek is an art ware made of a refined porcelain body distinguished by an unusually high feldspar content. This material gives the body a special strength that permits the making of extravagant shapes. The body possesses a translucency when fired that heightens the visual effect of glazes and gilding, and it is often finished with a glaze reminiscent of mother-of-pearl. The ware was developed in Ireland in the mid-1850s, and the technique was brought to America in the early 1880s.
Trenton’s own Ott & Brewer was the first American company to make belleek under the artistic direction of Walter Scott Lenox. In 1884, Lenox moved to Willets Manufacturing and, in 1889, founded Ceramic Art Company (later Lenox). These were the premier makers of belleek in

America. Gallagher joined the curatorial staff of the Mint Museum in Charlotte, N.C., in 2007. He holds a Master of Arts and a Master of Philosophy from Bard Graduate Center, New York. Before joining the Mint, he was assistant curator in the Department of European Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He has organized and managed numerous exhibitions during his museum career on a variety of topics, including British ceramics, American brilliant cut glass, North Carolina pottery, Chinese export porcelain, and modern decorative arts shown at world’s fairs. He has authored two books about the renowned British ceramics collection at the Mint Museum.
Longtime ceramics
collector Bob Cunningham will join the conversation following Gallagher’s remarks. He started collecting American brilliant cut glass and soon after expanded his interest to Lenox China because it was a local Trenton company with a fascinating history and an international reputation as purveyor to presidents and kings. From there he broadened his attention to other historic Trenton ceramics companies focusing on 19thcentury belleek and parian.
This virtual event is free of charge and open to the public, but reservations are required. Make your reservation on Eventbrite at www.eventbrite.com/e/amer ican-belleek-webinartickets-575029357287.

Understanding The Antiques And Collectibles Pecking Order
By Michael Ivankovich
Here’s a concept that’s not often discussed: the antiques and collectible pecking order. What I mean is that there are different levels within the trade, and it’s sometimes interesting to watch an item move from one level to the other and how “value” changes at each level.
(level two). It was a fair price, and I had no intention of selling it. My plan was to take it home and add it to my collections. Temporarily, I placed it in my van. The next thing I knew, another dealer who happened to be shopping the flea market saw the bucket and asked its price. I said it wasn’t for sale. Before long, the offer was $200, and I

This is a true story and a good example of what I mean. Some years ago my friend purchased an antique country wooden bucket in original blue milk-based paint at a garage sale for $1 (level one). We met the next day at a flea market where we were both set up, and he sold it to me for $10
couldn’t say no any longer. I accepted the $200 and split it with my friend. I later learned that the new owner was a high-end antiques dealer. He took it to an antiques show (level three) where he was exhibiting that weekend, and I heard through the grapevine that he sold it for $500 to an

advanced collector (level four).
The point of this vignette is that something purchased for $1 at a garage sale on a Saturday morning traded hands several times, subsequently selling for $10, then $200, and finally for $500, all the next day. This illustrates the way merchandise can move through the antiques and collectibles chain or pecking order, until it finally reaches the ultimate retail buyer.
This type of exchange used to be common when farm and regular house sales took place every Saturday and dealers would take their purchases the following day to the various markets in Adamstown to sell.
What a great business we’re in.
What’s it worth? Eventually almost every collector reaches the point where they decide to sell their collections. Age, health, death, divorce, declining interest, a pending move or downsizing, debt or financial obligations can motivate individuals to sell. There’s a lot of great merchandise coming back into the marketplace

today, with even more returning in the coming years. This is great news if you’re a collector because, with fluctuating prices and fresh merchandise, there probably hasn’t been a better time to collect over the past generation.
