Bodnar’s To Auction Treasure Trove Of New Jersey Dairy History Two-Day Sale To Be Held April 27 And 28 On a September day in 2021, auctioneer Joseph Bodnar and his crew drove into a quiet neighborhood in Long Branch, N.J., and walked up to the door to pick up items that Mark Conover Sr. had spent his lifetime collecting. Although Bodnar had seen the collection, his crew had no idea what they were about to see. As they descended the stairs into the basement, they were amazed at what was in front of them. Every wall had been custom built with shelving to house thousands of milk bottles. Each and every New Jersey dairy bottle was perfectly placed in alphabetical order from

A to Z, lining every wall, even under the stairs. This was Mark’s Museum and his lifetime’s work. Conover Sr. had passed away in February 2021 and left his legacy collection to his children. He had started collecting as a child when a neighbor in his Atlantic Highlands home began telling him the history of the town. His interest was piqued, and he began to dig for old bottles in an area his neighbor had told him about. That was all it took. A lifetime love was born. He would find old bottles and then go to the local library to research them. He loved finding information on where they came from. As the years passed, he focused more on going to trade shows, where he became friends with other collectors, and when the internet came along, he could buy, sell and trade bottles all over the country. The collection did not solely focus on dairy and milk bottles of all shapes and sizes. It encompasses every aspect of dairies. He had an extremely large collection of bottle caps in every shape, size and composition created. He also had binders of ephemera relating to New Jersey dairies, including calendars dating back to the turn of the 20th century, receipts, photos, postcards, and much more. There are tools used at dairies, wax bottles, patches and buttons. This is truly the history of New Jersey dairies. Over 4,500 bottles will be offered, most having their original tops from that dairy as well as paper sleeves. There are very few duplicates in this collection with some color variations and error bottles. All bottles will be in group lots of 10 and are still in the order of how Conover Sr. placed them on his shelves Grab some cookies and milk and log in to Bodnar’s website. Bidding is open online, and the live sale will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27 and 28, starting at 11 a.m. each day with a live broadcast online. Bidding will be offered on Bodnar’s website, Liveauctioneers and Invaluable. An in-person preview will be held Tuesday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., by appointment in Monmouth Junction, N.J. Local pickup will be available, and most items will ship with Bodnar’s in-house shipping department. For additional information, call toll-free 866-349-7378 or visit www.bodnarsauction.com.

Machmer collection (Pook & Pook, 2008), and an early and important Broderie perse quilt, dated 1814, probably Philadelphia or New Jersey, are other highlights. A 19th-century Pennsylvania redware toy stove with little pots and kettles fitted into a removable top, included in “Pennsylvania Folk Art,” the 1974 exhibit at the Allentown Art Museum, and a sgraffito decorated Pennsylvania redware inkstand incised “Jonas Haring 1853” are featured items within some strong lots of folk ceramics. A figure of a seated man holding a turkey in a loaf dish, illustrated in David Schorsch’s “The Pearson Collection,” and other figural redware will be on offer. A furniture highlight is a late 18th-century painted hard pine tavern table, probably Southern, retaining an old gray over green surface, ex. Linda and Dennis Moyer (Pook & Pook, 2020). Also offered are a Massachusetts Chippendale mahogany block front chest of drawers, ca. 1770, and a Chippendale walnut tea table, ca. 1770. Six tall case clocks featured are from the estate of Charles West Wilson of Red Lion, Pa. The highlight is a rare American bracket clock, ca. 1810, with a fully engraved silvered dial inscribed Richard Miller, a member of the Miller clock making family of Elizabethtown, N.J., before he set up shop in Duck Creek, Del. Firearms include a wide selection such as a deluxe factory engraved political Moore’s no. 1 Deringer, with spread wing eagle and American shield, a scarce example made to be given as a gift to select U.S. congressmen and senators who sat on military committees, said to be given in hopes of

landing military contracts. It is estimated that 25 of these particular examples were produced. An important piece of history, a Confederate States Civil War Native American Indian bronze medal, dated “22 February 1862,” inscribed verso, “The Congress of the C.S.A. to Stand Waite, Chief of the Cherokee,” recalls a moment in America’s past. Stand Waite was a Cherokee politician who served as the second principal chief of the Cherokee Nation from 186266 and was the only Native American general officer of the war and the last Confederate States Army general to surrender. Another important historical item is a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, printed by Johan Gutenberg and Johann Fust, 1455. The leaf originates from an incomplete Bible, the Mannheim copy, sold at Sotheby’s in 1920 to Joseph

Sabin, and contains parts of the 2nd Book of Esdras, chapters 14 and 15. Its portfolio contains a four-page introduction by A. Edward Newton. The most romantic Americana items in the sale might be two automobiles. A candy red 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air with a big block V8 engine, four-speed manual transmission, and a five-digit odometer registering 25,330 will attract a lot of attention. Its muscular companion is a Hemi Orange 1972 Dodge Challenger, with a 340 fourbarrel motor, three-speed automatic transmission, and all the power you could ever want or need. Collector Anecdotes And Antics Coming Soon To Your Favorite Auction House: Vault Storage Services

One of the most often overlooked expenses to building any kind of collection is the concept of insurance and secure storage. Many collectors have fallen victim to theft or natural disasters, and it has a lasting effect on them. Unfortunately, the topic of insurance and secure storage are not some of the most exciting discussions within the realm of the antiques and collectibles trade. Most collectors would rather discuss recent record-breaking

ways to attract and keep consumers in a market ripe with other selling options and competitors. Just a few years ago, the concept of vault storage seemed like something very few collectors could afford. Most collectors of high-end collectibles looking for affordable off-site storage simply used their bank’s safe deposit box services and paid a nominal yearly fee. Then certain online auction companies started to look for new ways to create loyalty to their business. It was also at this time that a lot of auction companies and industry analysts noted an alarming trend occurring in some of the most popular markets in the collectibles trade. Most of the participants who were spending sizable amounts of money on these items were not buying the items to hold indefinitely. Most were buying in hopes the collectible would go up in value and could be sold

for a profit. I have always warned would-be investors in the collectibles trade to use caution. Right now, the market is experiencing a massive bull market, but this could change without warning. That said, an old finance professor once told me, “The trend is your friend, around the bend, until it ends.” And for better or worse, that is where we are in the collectibles trade at present time. One of the first online auction companies to notice the trend of mass speculation occurring in the trading card market was PWCC Auctions. PWCC Auctions used to partner with eBay and offer an incredible selection of graded trading cards. The company no longer is directly affiliated with eBay for reasons that are well beyond the scope of this article, but PWCC helped pioneer an interesting concept. Since consignors send them their trusted and valuable trading cards for auction, why not offer storage in their vault as an added benefit service to their clients? Slowly, but surely, the concept has started to work, and now other auction houses are following suit. Goldin Auctions offers a similar service, and online juggernaut eBay recently announced plans to enact a similar concept known solely as the eBay Vault. Given the rise of popularity for the service, it is only on hundreds of tables of a matter of time before it unique artifacts. In addition becomes common at other to the Civil War antiquities for sale, there will also be memorabilia from the Revolutionary War and Spanish-American War. The show will be vetted for quality and authenticity. Dealers will be bringing their best wares for this anticipated event. For additional information, contact Zurko Promotions at 715-526-9769.

Thousands of museumquality Civil War artifacts, collector arms, cavalry swords, historical autographs, pictures, coins, currency, and much more will be on display and for sale. “You may purchase a real treasure of American history for yourself or a loved one to be passed down as a great family heirloom,” stated Bob Zurko of Zurko’s M i d w e s t Promotions. collectors. This is without getting into the subject of possible theft and natural disasters. What happens if internal theft and damage to an item stored at one of these vaults occurs? What happens if the company in question faces a liquidity issue or goes bankrupt? These are all questions that need to be addressed, and to be fair, I am sure that these reputable companies have the answers. Unfortunately, I don’t think that a lot of unsophisticated speculators trying to be investors have the foresight to ask. Regardless of the fine print, the risks, or even the added benefits, make no mistake, vault storage is now a part of the services that some auction companies are offering. This concept will spread to more auction houses over the coming years assuming the market for collectibles keeps rising. Collectors just need to understand the pros and cons of these services and analyze if it is worth it for them to utilize them. There will be more discussions on this concept in future articles. Until then, thanks for reading!

auction houses throughout the trade. One market that could benefit tremendously from this is the numismatic marketplace, where the average investment-grade coin is already outside the budget of most collectors. Even comic book collectors could benefit from a service like this. Thanks to growing attention being paid to pop culture collectibles at present time, some comic books that could be had just a few years ago for $1,000 are now trending toward $5,000 to $10,000 each. It is important to understand that most collectors who are using these vault storage services are not reading the fine print. Auction companies are not taking the added risk of collectible storage without benefiting directly from it. There are fees that need to be assessed. For instance, one popular auction company proudly offers that for any graded trading card you purchase through them valued over a certain amount, you can store it in their vault free of charge. Sounds great, except when you learn that this same company charges a fulfillment fee if you then want the item shipped to you, plus the cost of shipping, handling, and insurance. As a result, these services are becoming more popular among speculators and investors operating in these markets than with true

auction sales or what up and coming collectibles are going to be in demand in the near future. Auction companies, however, have started to venture into this market, and it is having a profound effect on the market as a whole. It is no secret that at present time certain collectibles are trending at all-time highs. Up and coming online auction companies have experienced explosive growth these past few years, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. One of the most popular markets in the collectibles trade happens to be the market for collectible and thirdparty graded trading cards. Everything from vintage sports cards to “Pokemon” and “Magic: The Gathering” collectible card games is soaring to new heights. This helped propel certain auction houses that cater to these markets to newfound popularity. It has also caused a lot of these auction houses to explore new

A trained potter with considerable marketing experience, Ray became Bossons’ principal designer. Plaster art had long been dismissed as a “poor man’s marble,” especially by those who could afford the real thing. For those who couldn’t (which included most prospective Bossons customers), attractive home décor items, at attractive prices, were just the ticket. Not “the real thing?” They were the next best thing, and that was good enough. Ever wanted to study a “Tyrolean” up close? How about a “Smuggler?” A “Fisherman?” A “Fiji Islander?” For collectors of Bossons Character Masks, opportunities like those are as close as checking out what’s hanging on the wall. There, in all their ethnic or character-inspired glory, are three-dimensional “heads,” celebrating the world’s diversity. There are characters from countries read about, yet still to be visited (“The Himalayan,” “The Corsican,” “The Rumanian”); denizens of the Wild West (“Rawhide,” “The Old Timer,” “Tecumseh”); working folk from all walks of life (“The Chef,” “The Lifeboatman,” “The Clown”). Ray Bossons’ intricately detailed depictions run the global gamut, each encapsulating, in just about six inches, the essence of their subjects. Unlike wall-mount “lady head vases,” which have an opening for flowers in the crown of the lady’s oversize hat, Bossons heads are solid plaster. The firm’s publicity referred to them as “wall masks,” which hits it right on the head. Not Halloween masks. Not pandemic masks. These are “life masks,” capturing facial likenesses with as much precision as possible. Based in Congleton, England, the company was founded shortly after WWII by W. H. Bossons. With an extensive background in ceramics and tile work, W.H. saw a

the handpainted plaques, with their sculpted three-dimensional highlights, brought a touch of class to any home. (Most of those homes, incidentally, were outside of Great Britain. Due to a domestic sales tax of 125 percent, exports over the years accounted for almost 75 percent of Bossons’ business). Bossons plaques and products were easy to find. If fine jewelry stores turned up their noses, there were plenty of other options: gift and collectible shops, tobacco shops, and souvenir shops on cruise ships. There was soon a bounty of Bossons products to choose from, including shelf ornaments, mirrors, barometers, thermometers, book ends, and lamp bases. In addition to scenic views, the 3-D variety encompassed everything from floral groupings to hunting scenes. And then, of course, there were the heads. Ray Bossons designed his initial “Character Wall Mask” in 1958 (a “Snake Charmer”). The masks made their official debut in the 1959 catalog. From then on, Bossons masks were at the head of the company line. Each year’s catalog introduced new members of the Bossons community, and consumers couldn’t get enough. In addition to character and ethnic heads, there were animal and bird heads; heads modeled after fictional characters (including a generous assortment of Charles Dickens’ all-stars, from “Mr. Pickwick” to “Ebenezer

exceedingly rare Brady jugate ribbon set a new standard for any political ribbon. This example sparked 38 bids while reaching the same price, nearly six times its $20,000 preauction estimate. This rarity is the key to the Brady 1860 jugates and has not been brought to market for more than 15 years. It measures 7 inches long by 2 inches wide and bears exceptionally bold, unblemished portraits. Reaching the same price was a Stephen A. Douglas 1860 George Clark ambrotype and rare mate to the legendary Lincoln badge, which brought in 25 bids as it blew past its pre-auction estimate of $25,000. Douglas defeated Abraham Lincoln in the 1858 U.S. Senate election in Illinois but was one of two Democratic candidates who lost the presidential election two years later to Lincoln. (Heritage Auctions sold an Abraham Lincoln George Clark Ambrotype in 2018 for $35,000). The Douglas badge, like the Lincoln badge sold three years ago, is manufactured from a portrait taken

by Mathew Brady. Ambrotypes were so susceptible to damage that it is no surprise that precious few remain; it is believed the offered example is one of fewer than a half a dozen survivors (they were so fragile that they were discontinued in favor of the more durable ferrotype). Setting a record for the most paid for a political campaign cartoon, a fantastic baseball-themed Currier & Ives cartoon featuring Abraham Lincoln more than quadrupled its pre-auction estimate when it sold for $81,250. Widely considered the best political cartoon of the 1860 election because of its connection to the formative years of baseball, this one is exceptionally desirable because it is in color. It features portrayals of the four presidential candidates, each wearing a belt with the name of his team (political party) and carrying a bat acknowledging his political program or platform; Lincoln appears to be on the cusp of winning, standing on “Home Base” while sharing advice with his opponents.
