Collecting Spirit In Full Bloom At The Spring Rich Penn Auction Event
Three-Day Sale Slated For May 12 To 14
May is a great month for the collecting spirit. It bursts into full bloom with the warmer weather, amplifying the urge to get out and about. That’s when collectors like the late Don Stine were shoveling coal in the boiler to get the locomotive steamed up to start hitting the auctions and the shows. An avid train collector, Stine was well known among the train collecting community in the Midwest and belonged to many of the collector clubs. His massive collection will be a featured highlight in the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 12, 13, and 14, Rich Penn Auction Event.
The auction will be held at the Waterloo Convention Center in Waterloo, Iowa. Expect to see a large selection of electric and windup trains with associated layout pieces. The Stine collection had multiples of the same items, so there’s a broad and deep variety to choose from. All the major train names will be found. He also had hundreds of tin litho windup toys,
many of which are in excellent condition in the original boxes.
The late Ray Reetz also collected toys. He loved both batteryoperated and tin windups, including a variety of trains, planes and automobiles. Mechanical banks like the Columbus World’s Fair,
Uncle Sam, Magician, William Tell, Paddy & the Pig, as well as dozens of others will be sold.
An important collection of midto late-19th-century tobacco and brewery advertising lithography from the collection of Dave and Bonnie Libby is among the featured

stock yards. Farmers had to show their livestock at expositions, fairs and stock shows. When it was time to take them to market, sellers went through commission agents at the stockyards. Featured in this auction is a great variety of early stockyard advertising and promotional materials, and just like Coca-Cola, that includes signs, posters, watch fobs, and publicity photos.

offerings. The Libbys loved rare, scarce and hard-to-find works from the pre-prohibition era, such as early Budweiser pieces.
Advertising and country store collectors always have choice items to bid on at Rich Penn auctions. Display cases and cabinets, a mid-century beauty bar, soda fountain items, old candy jars, a round back classic restored Koken Barber chair and Coca-Cola material are all well represented. The Coca-Cola items include many rare
During the mid-20th century, sign maker art changed in form, materials and size, with bigger being better. Porcelain and neon became popular among sign companies. Petroliana connoisseurs will find an impressive selection of porcelain and neon signs in this auction, but they’ll have other choices too: clocks, displays, oil bottles and carriers. Among the special rarities is a ca. 1920s Splitdorf Spark Plug Display in excellent condition. Ford lovers will appreciate the rare cast aluminum Ford Golden Jubilee Crest dealer wall sign. Pump collectors will love the restored Tokheim 850 clock face pump.
Among the neons will be a rare mid-1950s Pontiac Strato Streak V8 in three colors and a Commander V8 neon from the same era by Studebaker. All are original, in

Lesh Houck Auctioneers, based in Newport, Pa., conducted a sale on March 25 of a partial local estate that had three very rare 18th-century Native American Indian items. “We believe the knife sheath and shot pouch to be from the Northern Plains,” mentioned Sue Houck of Lesh Houck.
The first rare item was an 18thcentury quilled double lane knife sheath. The second, an early quilled shot pouch. Authentic early Native American Indian artifacts in good surviving condition are simply rare regardless of form. The

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: An Old Auction Catalog
pricing for many Pennsylvania German folk art objects.
traded in for Pennsylvania German antiques after moving to Lancaster.
By Peter Seibert
I do love looking at old auction catalogs if they have the sale results either written on the pages or incorporated as a print-out. Looking back in time, I can dream of what I would have bought if only I had known something would go really cheaply or, conversely, what would diminish in value. The other week, I was looking at the auction catalog for the auction held by Christie’s at the Lebanon County Fairgrounds for Rich and Joan Smith. The 1995 sale was arguably at the peak of
I first met Rich and Joan in 1993. He was retired from Armstrong World Industries and was living with his wife, Joan, at their home in Millbach, Lebanon County. For those of you who are Pennsylvania German folk art nuts like I am, the Millbach house (which they also owned) is among the most famous of buildings. The kitchen, or great room, is on exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their collection was magnificent, as both collected with an artist’s eye and a scholar’s heart.
Rich could look at a table of pottery and pick out the one item that was a rare form, beautiful condition and aesthetically pleasing. I recall an interview where Rich and Joan talked about owning modern furniture that they
The auction followed on the heels of the landmark sale by Christie’s in Lancaster for the estate of George Scott. That sale, known to the trade as “GREAT SCOTT!,” set a number of record prices for items, including the cover lot of two folk art wood carved Dalmatians and also a Lancaster Windsor chair. Dr. Scott had died, and his family were the ones who put the collection up for sale. In the antiques trade, there is an unspoken axiom that collectors/dealers will pay a good price at an estate sale but are loathe to do so if the collector is still alive. That viewpoint was common, although the collector Paul Flack, who had wonderful things, did break the tradition with a series of auctions while he was alive.
The Smiths decided to offer part of their collection for sale as they anticipated a move to a new home south of Lancaster. The crowd was ready, the dealers and collectors primed, and the sale brought some incredible prices. In particular were a number of pieces of sulfur inlaid furniture that were both rare and unique. These all were attributed to a woodworker named Peter Holl, who regrettably for the catalog’s sake was not the maker. Holl was a pump maker and did not appear to have ever made any chests, let alone ones with sulfur inlay. That did not stop the market from getting fired up, and the pieces sold for strong prices. They eventually ended up in
the collection of Bill DuPont of Delaware and re-appeared on the market last year after his passing.
The redware was another area that achieved strong prices at the Smith sale. Rich and Joan loved color and form, and so the record prices were for figural pieces of redware (rare in any condition) and beautiful colors, such as the New England jug

Colonial Era Stoneware Flask Sells
For $72,000
By Karl Pass
Last week, we looked at an interesting Harrisburg, Pa., decorated stoneware batter pail that did well at Crocker Farm’s recent ceramics auction. This week I want to highlight a very early stoneware flask with incised and impressed decoration, attributed to the Crolius Family in Manhattan, N.Y.
The rare survivior brought $72,000, selling to a Pennsylvania private collector. “It’s an important piece, we were happy with the price, and it shows how proper dating, attribution and cataloging is everything,” noted Mark Zipp of Crocker Farm.
Dating to the second or third quarter of the 18th century, wheel-thrown, foursided with flattened front and reverse, and salt-glazed surface, the flask ranks among the earliest examples of American stoneware to hit the market. According to the Zipps, the family of owners and operators at Crocker Farms, the work’s combination of freehand incising and stamped
decoration link it to the craft’s emergence in Manhattan during the second quarter of the 18th century. The flask previously sold for $2,394 on April 22, 2022, at Pook & Pook.
A four-sided tea canister ($18,880) sold in Crocker Farm’s Nov. 3, 2018, auction and was made by the same potter as the flask, bearing similar stamped decoration accompanying incised flowers, appearing to have been rendered by the same hand. Moreover, related juxtaposition of profuse stamping and freehand incising can be noted on the well-known William Crolius heart-shaped inkstand, dated 1773, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This William Crolius, son of the William Crolius who immigrated from Germany to Manhattan in the first quarter of the 18th century, is the man who enslaved, and later freed, the family of people that included a young Thomas W. Commeraw, set free

when he was approximately 8 years old. In “Commeraw’s Stoneware: The Life and Work of the First African-American Pottery Owner,” Brandt Zipp notes the close relation between the aforementioned canister and the Met’s inkstand, stating that it “was probably made on the same property that once housed young (Thomas Commeraw) and his family” (Zipp, pg. 42). Today, the pottery located in Lower Manhattan is on the grounds of the Metropolitan Correctional Center. For related treatments and decorative elements found on Crolius and Remmey family sherds, dating ca. 1720-65, see Meta F. Janowitz, “New York City Stonewares from the African Burial Ground,” published in “Ceramics in America 2008,” figs. 28, 33, 36, 37, 40, and 41.
It’s an exciting time for the field of American ceramics, and the Zipp family deserves credit for its tremendous role.

working condition, and a dramatic backdrop for the seven classic cars selling, to include a restored 1971 Mustang Fastback, a 1958 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser and an original 1964 Ford Galaxie 500.
Victorian era lighting, porcelain, glassware and furniture including centuries-old pieces are coming from the United Kingdom estate of the late Richard Lyon-DalbergActon, 4th Baron Acton and Member of the House of Lords. Furnishings from his Iowa summer home are 17th and 18th
century pieces. “It will be another wonderful auction with a very wide assortment for collectors. There are a number of great pieces in this auction that we’ve never sold before. It’ll be a fun education watching them sell,” commented Rich Penn. “The newly renovated Waterloo Convention Center is just 100 yards from our office. The center is a great facility and is connected to a hotel and parking ramp by an enclosed skywalk. It’s within easy walking distance to some great restaurants. The hotel gives our guests a special $84 room rate, and I think we’ll have some other fun things lined up too. We’re really looking forward to it! The site is conveniently located in downtown Waterloo, just one block off the freeway,” added Penn.
For those who can’t make it, Penn offers multiple bidding options, including absentee, telephone and live bidding online through LiveAuctioneers.
