Gladys Lutz: Folk Painter Of The Lehigh Valley By Karl Pass Gladys M. Lutz (1909-2007) of Schnecksville, Pa. (born in Lynnport, Pa.), was an elementary school teacher for 37 years prior to retiring in 1964. The start of her education career was in one-room schoolhouses. Lutz was a member of Jacobs Church in New Tripoli and began her painting career in 1968. Documenting Pennsylvania German everyday life and culture, primarily in the Lehigh Valley, she worked with a vibrant color palette on board in what is considered a naive untrained or selftaught folk tradition. Lutz provided a short description on the reverse of her paintings using her manual typewriter, providing a documented historical record of what the
scene or activity depicted. Specializing in themed series, she often did paintings in groups of five, such as covered bridges of the region. One example in the 9by-12-inch oil-on-board covered bridge series depicts “Schlicher’s Bridge.” The typed index card on reverse reads: “Schlicher’s Bridge is located near the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. It is also known as the Deer Pen Bridge. It is the shortest (108 ft. long) and the ‘newest’ (built in 1882) bridge that spans the Jordan Creek. It is a one span structure, constructed with the Burr truss and is maintained by the state. It is one of five covered bridges that cross the Jordan Creek. The others are Guth’s Bridge, Wehr’s Bridge, Rex’s Bridge, and Geiger’s Bridge.” The other

four are also depicted in the series. In 2005, the Albany Township Historical Society had a booth the Kutztown Folk Festival recreating a Pennsylvania German summer kitchen and daily food ways of rural Pennsylvania Germans during the summer. Many farms used (some still do) summer kitchens during the heat of the summer months in order to keep extra heat out of the house. Summer kitchens are most often attached out buildings with a hearth and bake oven. An outgrowth of the festival experience prompted society volunteers to create a cookbook using Lutz’s paintings to illustrate traditional activities in a seasonal format such as collecting dandelion greens in spring, harvesting berries and baking pies in summer, making
apple butter in the fall, and smoking meats in winter. “Folk Art & Foodways of the Pennsylvania Dutch” by Jeff Dietrich and Lucetta Trexler Muth, the cookbook organized around the four seasons with seasonal illustrations by Lutz, was published in 2006. Filled with 115 recipes collected from local Pennsylvania German families, some are classic dishes, other recipes are more contemporary, adapted to modern times. Dietrich and Trexler Muth perfectly incorporate 13 of Lutz’s colorful paintings. With each illustration is a story written by the artist and was skillfully arranged in the book by Gail Gottlund. Another worthwhile examination of Lutz’s artwork was done by
The Mechanical Bank Collectors of America and the Still Bank Collectors Club of America have announced the annual convention as one event to take place Saturday, May 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. It is a free event and free appraisals will be available. These two collector clubs have held their own seperate events in the past and have decided to combine to hold one convention for both clubs. Members from all over the country and abroad look forward to the event, which will include seminars, presentations, tours of local collections and, of course, buying and selling banks. The convention is open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. Thousands of mechanical and still banks will be for sale. The Philadelphia Marriot Old City Hotel is located at 1 Dock St. in Philadelphia. The Elverson Show Returns Quality Antiques Show To Be Held May 7 And 8 The Elverson Show has returned. After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19 concerns, the Elverson Antique show will return to the Twin Valley High School on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8. The committee is excited to resume the show, which will continue to feature fine country antiques, folk art, primitives, and decorative accessories. Many of the same dealers are planning to return after patiently waiting for the green light from the school district. The last time the show was held in March 2019, it
celebrated its 50th year. The show began as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company, but now is held in the Twin Valley High School and supports the athletic department, specifically the lacrosse team, whose members provide assistance with the show setup and food service. The committee has received many phone calls and emails from dealers and the public who have supported the show in the past. Interest remains high, and there is a lot of excitement among those who have attended and
participated in this wellestablished country show. Twin Valley High School is located at 4897 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson, Pa. The hours Continued on page 6

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: The Record Shop
About two weeks ago, the family decided to go out on a rainy Saturday to hunt for that rare animal, used vinyl records. Now I have to tell you that this was both an odd nostalgic trip for me and an amazing blast for a family afternoon. Let me do a quick summary on the participants: middle-aged mom and dad who grew up in the 1980s when vinyl was still being sold in record stores; an early 20something daughter who is totally into vinyl as a retro thing because her generation loves “old school” records;

then early teen, youngest daughter, who is somewhat interested in vinyl since her virtual playlist does not cover all the music she likes. Off we went to the antiques malls hunting records. For oldest daughter, it was fascinating,, as she was searching out the punk bands of the 1980s in vinyl. She was so frustrated because she could not find the Sex Pistols, the Damned, or even the Ramones. I had to explain to her that many of those bands back in the day were considered heavily alternative and that you could not even find their stuff in the local record store. Growing up in Harrisburg, there was a converted gas station in Camp Hill that sold those records, and that is where everyone went. You paid a pretty price too if they were UK exports, so building up a collection was tough. For oldest daughter, it was a lesson in supply side antiques. If it was rare to begin with, then it is rare and expensive to find now. For youngest daughter, she is enamored with 1960s music. There are many choices, but
not all of them sound very good. Scratched records and cheap later knockoffs are the issue. She loves Jefferson Airplane and the Mamas and the Papas. We found her examples but had to walk through with her why some were expensive and others were nothing in price. Then there was me. I found myself drawn to the rare bootleg albums that I never saw as a kid growing up. The vinyl that might have a rare cut or an oddball performance. And I will say that the record shop assuredly knows my kind of buyer, as those albums definitely cost me a song and a prayer to get. Again, scarcity of the market driving prices up. My wife enjoys classical music, and there, too, was an interesting phenomenon. I remember going past a trash heap and finding piles of vinyl classical records being pitched. This was about 20 years ago. Today, I am surprised by the strong prices for classical vinyl. As I found out, many of these performances have not been moved virtually, and so the vinyl is the only way
to hear a particular ensemble. Therefore, our day out hunting netted about $100 in purchases between the four of us. It was great fun and actually kind of neat to go through vinyl with our kids looking at albums. If you are looking for something fun to do, I heartily recommend a day of vinyl hunting.
“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

style that both ball players and sports journalists and editors of that period recognized as peculiarly American. Among the most surprising pictures in the collection are close-up studies that reveal in detail how individual pitchers held the ball for fastballs, curves, spitballs, and sliders, and how power batters gripped their bats during different situations at the plate. About Charles Conlon Charles Conlon was an upstate New York newspaper proofreader and amateur landscape photographer who began making snapshot studies of athletes at baseball games in 1904. When he ended his career in 1942, he was widely celebrated for his candid but lyrical photographs that appeared as halftone reproductions in the annual Spalding’s “Official Base Ball Guide” and the monthly “Baseball Magazine” and were also reproduced widely on
baseball trade cards. Many of the photographs appear in the two monographs on the artist: “Constance McCabe, Baseball’s Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon” (1993) and “Constance and Neal McCabe, The Big Show: Charles M. Conlon’s Golden Age Baseball Photographs” (2011).

Archive Of Items Pertaining To Sir Barton, Horse Racing’s First Triple Crown Winner, In 1919, Will Be Sold
Antiques & Collectibles
“I’ll Be B
Antiques & Auction News — April 29, 2022 - - 5
Sale To Take Place May 5, Two Days Prior To Kentucky Derby What are believed to be the saddle, three race-worn saddle cloths, jockey’s helmet and trainer’s hat from Sir Barton, horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner, from 1919, will headline an onlineonly auction scheduled for Thursday, May 5, by Weiss Auctions. The auction will be held two days in advance of this year’s Kentucky Derby, slated for May 7. “We are thrilled to offer what might be considered one of the most, if not the most, single important historic find in race horse history,” said Philip Weiss of Weiss Auctions. “This is an archive for the true race horse historian, horse owner or museum curator.” It’s the expected top lot in
a massive, 500-lot auction of sports memorabilia, Disney collectibles and animation art. Also offered in the sale will be rare early 20th century boxing card uncut proof sheets, a collection of Zaccagnini Disney figurines, an early original Charles Schulz “Peanuts” daily strip, important sports cards
and autographs. Internet bidding will be through LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. For more information, visit www.weissauctions.com. The story behind the discovery of the Sir Barton archive is nearly as fascinating as the archive itself. It begins with the
consignor taking one of many trips to Florida from her home in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. “I often stop at flea markets and antique stores anywhere I go when there’s time, looking for unique hats and sunglasses,” she said. Nearly a decade ago, on her way back from Florida, she stopped at a few flea markets on her usual route (along Old Highway 63, through northwest Arkansas) and was making her way through an old store when she noticed a dusty black top hat in a corner booth. “I passed it by,” she said, “but then I picked it up and took it to the front. I was told it was part of a lot that had to be sold These worn saddle cloths are part of an archive of items together.” from Sir Barton. Continued on page 7

Weiss turned over the leg saddle flap and barely noticed something there inscribed in the leather. It read, “Sir Barton.” I gasped. I may have screamed. I was in shock.” She immediately started researching Sir Barton, reading and looking at the few photos there are of him online. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” she said. “Several of my items were clearly in the photos.” Upon further examination, she discovered the initials “GB” (Guy Bedwell) inside the top hat. “I also discovered the initials “JL” (Johnny Loftus) in the jockey skull cap. I tell you, I cried.” Further research revealed that after Guy Bedwell passed away, his now late son and assistant trainer, Leonard
Bedwell, moved to a farm in Arkansas, just off Old Highway 63. “It made sense to me how these items may have ended up in that old flea market down there,” she said. “I then very carefully stored and protected my newfound treasures. I knew I had something special.” The consignor has never cleaned any of the items, and for that she is grateful. “And I didn’t tell anyone about my find but a couple close friends and my brother for fear it would get stolen. I felt it needed to be seen and enjoyed by all who love horse racing, and I was responsible for getting it into the right hands.” Sir Barton was a chestnut colt bred in Kentucky by John E. Madden at Hamburg Place Farm, near Lexington. His paternal grandshire was the 1893 English Triple Crown winner Isinglass, and his half-brother was 1908 juvenile champion Sir Martin. In 1918, Madden sold Sir Barton for $10,000 to J.K.L. Ross, a Canadian businessman who had committed himself to horse racing. The following year, 1919, Sir Barton won his season debut as a maiden in the Kentucky Derby, winning the race by five lengths. The next day he was shipped to Baltimore to participate in the Preakness, where he defeated Eternal by four lengths. He then won the Withers Stakes in New York in May and then the Belmont Stakes in June, completing the Sir Barton, ridden by jockey Johnny Loftus, won the first Triple Crown in history. Sir Barton’s four wins were Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in 1919, making him horse racing’s very first Triple accomplished in a span of just 32 days, and he was retroactively Crown winner. Upon looking in a basket comprising the lot, she saw saddle blankets, a saddle, crops and other items. “All were very old and dusty, obviously horse racing items, so I decided to buy the lot because I had ideas to have a horse racing display in my house someday,” she said. “When I got home, I put them in a plastic tub with my other findings, closed it up and stacked it with the rest.” Several years later, she began pulling the tubs out, and when she got to that tub she began examining everything and envisioning a display. “I was looking at the saddle thinking I might cut it in half to mount it on the wall when I

honored as 1919’s Horse of the Year. Later that same year his winning streak came to an end at the Dwyer Stakes, where he faced Purchase, another highly rated three-year-old. On a muddy track, Purchase caught up to Sir Barton in the final furlong, and Sir Barton finished second. Sir Barton finished 1919 with $88,250 in total winnings, just ahead of the legendary Man o’ War. As a four-year-old, Sir Barton won five of his 12 races. An original Brunner watercolor dated 1960 on the back reads, “The Seasons Greetings/To Dr. Laura L. Barnes/From/Hattie K. Brunner.” Personalized work is unusual. Brunner maintained contact with the wife of Dr. Albert Barnes following his death in 1951, which occured in a car accident at age 79. Dr. Laura Barnes died in 1966. Much of her art collection today is in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Courtesy of a private collector.
This is Hattie Brunner in her shop. du Pont, Dr. Albert Barnes, George Lorimer, Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, Walter Himmelreich, Titus Geesey, and Cornelius Weygandt. Hattie had a unique way of documenting purchase price and sales. On correspondence she sometimes used a secret code containing symbols that correlated to a specific number. An example of the code appears on an invoice with Dr. Albert Barnes. The code is MARYILOVEU. The first letter “M” represents $1, “A” represents $2, the “R” $3, so forth, $1 to $10. However, some characters are random and meaningless. The top line is her cost. It is A1X. The bottom line, what she sold item for, R1F. So, “A” means $2 and “R” means $3. She realized a $1 profit. A1X R1F This reference is not to paint the picture she just sold low value trinkets. Some very high dollar significant material changed hands from Brunner to Barnes. The cornerstones of the Barnes Foundation’s Pennsylvania German collection came from Brunner, much of it during the war years in the 1940s. Her art career didn’t begin until the late 1950s. Hattie began painting roughly at age 67, receiving no formal artistic instruction. Hattie painted over 500 watercolors, with the majority being pastoral landscapes. Hattie’s landscape paintings illustrate a slightly exaggerated yet quintessential life depicting farm scenes and country events with a flurry of activity that is often repeated in different seasons of the year. She drew from experiences traveling the local countryside, everyday living, and recollections of childhood pastimes to capture the natural settings of her community. Country sale paintings often included personal acquaintances and sometimes herself. Describing a Continued on page 9

This is Hattie Brunner in 1974 at age 85 with her paint brushes. Today, Hattie is remembered as an antiques dealer and as an artist. Hattie’s interest in buying and selling antiques began at an early age. Developing an interest in Pennsylvania German items, she became an antique dealer, not as a hobby, but as a relevent and dominate position in the marketplace. Her reputation as an authoritative source on Pennsylvania German decorative arts gained national recognition from museums, artists, art dealers, and, of course, collectors. Hattie Klapp Brunner was born in East Cocalico Township on Nov. 27, 1889, to Abiram and Mary Weinhold Klapp. The Klapps resided in Vera Cruz, a small village located along Route 897 near Reinholds, Pa. In 1917, Hattie received her Teacher’s Certificate from the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and not long after, she married Raymond Brunner. She taught piano and held student concerts in their residence in Reinholds. She also sang soprano in the Swamp Reformed Church choir and was the church’s organist from 1917-33. Her mother-inlaw, Hattie Sweigart Brunner, was an antiques dealer. Hattie followed suit in the business, opening her antiques shop The Tulip Shop in the early 1930s. It was a career that ran roughly half a century. She passed away Aug. 2, 1982.
