Fishersville Antiques Expo, From Spring Recovery To Fall Record Two-Day Show Set For May 20 And 21 After a show-less 2020, Heritage Promotions optimistically but cautiously held the 2021 spring edition of the Fishersville Antiques Expo. It was, by all measures, a successful recovery. After a short breather, and capitalizing on the success of that spring show, Ray and Martha Stokes and daughter Lesley began planning for the fall show. Not to be deterred, their perseverance and enthusiasm kept everything moving torward the 67th show in October. Ray and Martha donned their recruiting hats and hit the road, visiting shows all along the Eastern seaboard, looking for new and exciting dealers with unique and interesting merchandise. They got loyal dealers to return, signed on experienced antiques dealers that had never been to Fishersville, and even discovered some first-time dealers just entering the field. The dealer contracts came from Maine to as far west as Arizona. And the rest is history. While the total number of dealers was still down from peak numbers, the quality and enthusiasm never wavered. And the crowd on day one for the fall show was a record Continued on page 10

Slide-Lid Weber Box Brings $80,600 At Pook & Pook Rare Lancaster County Paint-Decorated Box Now Headed To Sunshine State Pook & Pook Inc., of Downingtown, Pa., held a twoday, 806-lot sale on April 21 and 22. The gross total was $2,167,001 (including a 24-percent buyer’s premium). The first 131 lots were from the Peter Tillou estate, the late Connecticut dealer and collector. Opening the sale was a Pennsylvania Chippendale walnut tall case clock with inlay initaled “DH” selling for $21,420. Several sewer tile dog figures, still life paintings, fraktur, china, German stoneware, signs, furniture, bronzes, land ong rifles, among other things, were from this consignment and sold well. A Pennsylvania Chippendale mahogany marble slab top table realized $14,880. A Charles Peale Polk portrait of David Brickell Kerr (1749-1814), dated 1791, sold for $29,760. Kerr was a Justice of the Peace and delegate to the

General Assembly from Talbot County, Md. A large group of antique firearms sold following the Tillou items. Day two featured numerous quality offerings. The Pete Lengel estate (Robesonia, Pa.)

included a collection of Shenfelder stoneware. Daniel Shenfelder worked in Reading, Pa., ca. 1870-90, and his pottery has a large base of active collectors today. A large five-gallon crock with elaborate floral decoration brought $3,720, and a Shenfelder spittoon, a rare form for the maker, sold for $4,284. A painted early hard pine tavern table, possibly Southern, sold for $9,450. It was cataloged with a Linda and Dennis Moyer provenance. It sold at This painted hard pine tavern table, late their sale at 18th century, sold for $9,450. At the Linda Pook & Pook on and Dennis Moyer sale at Pook & Pook in July 11, 2020, for 2020, it sold for $21,960. $21,960 to dealer Kelly Kinzle. The next lot was a rare Johann Adam Eyer fraktur with upper heart, lower text, winged angels, flanked by tulips, selling for $37,200 to Lisa Minardi in the room. It brought $23,100 at Conestoga Auction Co. on March 19, 2005. Jeff DeHart evaluated the piece at an appraisal event in Lancaster County, where the person who

brought it in stated it was salvaged from the trash. Sadly, many such family documents/heirloom fraktur were relegated to the trash over generations. This is a rare survivor/rescue story. Some very good redware was in this sale. A Pennsylvania redware inkstand with sgraffito decoration and incised “Jonas Haring 1853” realized $10,540. A redware figure of a cat (one paw restored) sold for $7,440. It sold for $5,750 at the Deyerle

sale in 1995 through Sotheby’s. A redware parrot perched on a stump, inscribed on base “Bell 1876,” attributed to the John Bell Pottery in Waynesboro,

Weber box selling for $80,600. “The buyer was a major collector in Florida,” according to Jamie Shearer of Pook & Pook. There were 32 lots from the late Chris Rebollo, who was a Pennsylvania dealer in high style antiques. A portrait attributed to Jacob Eichholtz sold for $4,284; a set of eight Philadelphia Federal dining chairs, $3,968; and a giltwood girandole mirror, ca. 1800, $8,060. Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: Light’s Out

By Peter Seibert Year’s ago, my very first exhibition as a 19-year-old museum curator was called “Lights Out” and showcased lighting devices in the collections of the Cumberland

County Historical Society. My passion for lighting devices came from some articles that I had read in Early American Life magazine about changes in technology from fat lamps to candles to whale oil and finally kerosene. Now, some years later, I still find myself fascinated by early lighting devices. A few weeks back, I purchased a mid-19th-,century tin lamp. The shop clerk who sold it to me wondered what it was, and I explained about wicks, the fluids, and the like. She thought I liked curiosities and pointed out other archaic tools in the collection. For me, the lamp, while probably not easily or pleasantly used

today, is more than a curiosity. It is a valued antique that speaks to how we lived as a nation in the 19th century. I recall a dear friend who told me that one evening he and his mother lit around 20 oil lamps for the effect. He told me it was magical to see, although it did get a bit smelly after a bit. Still, it created a different perspective for him to enjoy his paintings and artwork. Collecting early lighting devices is a wonderful place for a new collector to begin a lifetime hunt. Whether fat lamps or candlesticks, there are infinite varieties of things to collect. In my home, I have a group of candlesticks

spanning from the 17th century Spanish to the WMF Moderne. I put red candles in all of them and get quite the effect. Sitting by the television is a late 19th-century oil lamp with a large polished brass disc that can be adjusted behind the flame. It came from a doctor’s office in Billings, Montana, and is one of my favorite Old West relics from my time in the Rocky Mountains. The electric lamps in the house are equally varied, from an early 20th-century bronze lamp from a Vermont country home to a pair of Chinese fantasy electric candles that probably came from

Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth “Born to collect” should antique treasures found in be the motto of Peter shops, co-ops and at auctions.

a New Jersey home in the 1950s. Lamps are like paintings, they are something that you can fit into almost any décor. You can collect them or simply have an elegant set of candlesticks on a dining table. Windows with oil lamps burning in them or candlesticks with hurricane shades are equally elegant. Spend some time hunting for some great lighting devices for your home. They are very affordable and something that a new or an experienced collector could find and acquire.

Beatles’ 1966 Shea Stadium Concert Poster Sells For $275,000 At Heritage Auctions To Shatter Auction Record Fab Four Shares Stage With Grateful Dead, Whose “Skeletons And Roses” Poster Sells For $137,500

The original bright-yellow slab of cardboard poster promoting the Beatles’ Aug. 23, 1966, concert at New York’s Shea Stadium sold for $275,000 to set a new auction record for concert posters.

Unlike previous Beatlesat-Shea record-holders, the one sold here from the Fab Four’s final tour was untouched by conservation experts. Its previous owner, who owned it for decades, took great care of the keepsake and just, well, let it be. Live bidding opened at $115,000 and quickly jumped past $200,000 to land at its new high as the auction room burst into applause. The nearly sold-out auction, which doubled preauction estimates, attracted A fab foursome of 15-inch tall Beatles bobbleheads made in more than 1,660 bidders 1964 sold for $40,000.

Graded Near Mint Plus 9.6 by Certified Guaranty Company, it is the highest auction price for concert artwork from the psychedelic era.

worldwide and realized a total of $2,039,313. And the Beatles weren’t the lone chart-toppers in the sale. A near-mint example of Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley’s adored Family Dog “Skeleton and Roses” poster made for the Grateful Dead’s Sept. 16 and 17, 1966, concerts at San Francisco’s legendary Avalon Ballroom sold for $137,500. That poster, graded Near Mint Plus 9.6 by Certified Guaranty Company, came from the extraordinary KC Murphy Bindweed Press Collection and is now the most expensive concert artwork from the psychedelic era ever sold at auction, besting the previous record of $118,750 set at Heritage Auctions in November of 2019. “It was unspeakably exhilarating to break two world records in a single afternoon, in the same hour, no less,” said Pete Howard, Heritage Auctions’ director of Concert Posters. “When I joined Heritage Auctions three years ago, the thought of two concert posters combining for more than $400,000 was unthinkable. No more.” “The Beatles’ Shea reaching $275,000 wasn’t surprising, so much as it was long overdue,” according to

Howard. “Compared to the highest-priced movie posters and comic books, there’s still a lot of blue sky ahead for the best concert posters to keep increasing in value. And to see ‘Skeleton and Roses’ soar to $137,500 is a testament to the beauty and power of the best psychedelic concert posters.” Murphy brought 40 of the best of the very best psychedelic posters to auction over the weekend, and collectors responded accordingly. Eleven of the offerings from Murphy’s collection, which came straight from San Francisco’s historic Bindweed Press, sold for more than $10,000, among them the Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band 1966 “Red Bull” Continued on page 5

The most iconic concert poster of all time is now the most expensive concert poster of all time. On April 16, during Heritage Auctions’ Music Memorabilia Signature Auction, the stunning brightyellow slab of cardboard promoting the Beatles’ Aug. 23, 1966, concert at New York’s Shea Stadium sold for $275,000 to set a new auction record. That shatters the previous highwater mark of $150,000 shared by both the Shea Stadium poster (set in November of 2021) and another advertising Hank Williams’ two concerts scheduled for New Year’s Day 1953 at the Canton Memorial Auditorium in Ohio (established in May 2021).

That’s the real indicator of where this hobby is going.” Another big hit in the auction was the 1970 Martin D-35 that Bobby Whitlock played on Derek and the Dominos’ Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs and

George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. The guitar, gifted to Whitlock by Eric Clapton and Duane Allman on his 22nd birthday, sold for $87,500. But the Beatles, still making headlines and topping music and TV charts 52 years and six days after Paul McCartney announced the band’s end, dominated the auction. In July 1963, the Beatles played five shows at the Winter Gardens at Margate in Kent, England. A program from that legendary run, signed by all four of the Fabs, sold for $45,000 after a heated bidding war. Moments later, two more Beatles-related items sold for $40,000 each, both setting new records: a fab foursome of 15-inch Beatles bobbleheads made in 1964, and

one of the few surviving picture sleeves for Harrison’s 1979 single “Love Comes to Everyone.” The first one we’ve ever seen opened bidding at $15,500 before climbing to $40,000, even without the record inside. And this one really tied the sale together: An original concert-advertising cardboard window card for the Beatles’ final concert, held Aug. 29, 1966, at the l o n g - d e m o l i s h e d Candlestick Park in San Francisco, sold for $32,500, smashing previous highwater marks for the artwork. The poster, graded a 9.2 Near Mint Minus by CGC, was signed by Wes Wilson, the dean of San Francisco psychedelic concert poster design. For more information, visit www.HA.com.

Knowlton had paid $65,500 for the Mickey and Minnie motorcycle at Bertoia’s 2010 auction of the Donald Kaufman collection. Kaufman was a co-founder of KB Toys. Previously, it had been owned by visionary Disney toy collectors and reference book authors

This Linemar (Japan) tin battery-operated Popeye and Olive Oyl Super Tank sold for $33,600 against a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.

Doug and Pat Wengel. The new owner is a private collector in the United States who bid over the phone. Comic character toys in general, but especially those depicting Disney characters or other pre-WWII favorites, had an outstanding day at Bertoia’s. A 1930s Japanese celluloid Mickey Mouse chariot pulled by Horace Horsecollar retained its original 69-cent price tag from City of Paris, a legendary San Francisco department store that operated from 1850 to 1976. It sold for $33,600, nearly five times its high estimate. Another eye-catching celluloid duo, Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop, teamed up in a 1930s clock-themed toy whose rare and desirable original box displays the toy’s name: “Time Is Gold.” Against a $1,500-$2,500 estimate, it rose quickly through the ranks to secure a winning bid of $31,200. A ca. 1930 Mickey Mouse tin “Slate Dancer” crank toy took a bow at $26,400, while a Schuco three-wheeled tin wind-up cart with a felt Mickey Mouse driver applied the brakes at $18,000. Made in Germany, a Gunthermann Felix the Cat wind-up merry-go-round, one of only two or three known, features four Felix figures that ride around in autos and dirigibles when the toy is activated. an estimate of $15,000$25,000, it more than doubled expectations at $52,800. Another popular Felix toy was the 13-inch-long Chein “Felix Frolic,” which came from the American toymaker’s brief 1926 production run. One of only a handful of its type known to have survived, the colorful tin platform toy with a large figure of Felix and smaller figures of mice and cats leaped past its $12,000-$18,000 estimate to land at $38,400. Two other familiar comic characters, Popeye and Olive Oyl, arrived on the auction block with their batteryoperated tin “Super” Tank. Made by Linemar, a postwar Japanese offshoot of Marx Toys, it rolled over its $3,000-$5,000 estimate to halt at $33,600. Christmas antiques are avidly collected year round. As a result, there was aggressive competition from both Christmas and toy collectors for a ca. 1912 Fischer Father Christmas tin wind-up car. One of the most exciting events ever to be held at Bertoia Auctions’ New Jersey gallery took place on March 11 and 12 with the sale of the spectacular Monique Knowlton antique toy collection. The globally publicized auction of mostly 20th-century European, American and Japanese toys kept collectors riveted as examples with stellar provenance commanded unheard-of prices. After the hammer fell on the last of 628 lots, Bertoia’s president and principal auctioneer Michael Bertoia confirmed to the media that the single-owner collection had achieved a grand total of $2.16 million, inclusive of 20 percent buyer’s premium. The top lot of the sale, a ca. 1932 Tippco Mickey and Minnie tin wind-up motorcycle, stirred a bidding frenzy in the run-up to $222,000, a world-record auction price for any Disney toy. Prior to the sale, Bertoia’s had fielded numerous phone calls from bidders with an interest in the classic toy, which was estimated at $25,000$45,000. “There were several very substantial absentee bids in place, some from collectors who had tried unsuccessfully to win the toy at its last auction appearance 12 years ago. Those absentee bids faced strong competition from bidders on the phones and in the room,” said Bertoia. “Personally, I couldn’t have guessed how high it would go, that would have been impossible, but I felt confident that it would set an auction record because of all the excitement surrounding it. We were all surprised and happy for Monique when the motorcycle sold for such a fantastic price.”

Locomotive No. 221” twoinch gauge steeple cab locomotive. In pristine condition, the distinctive 13-inch-long cast-iron train engine with a raised central driving cab sold for $18,000 against an estimate of $5,000-$7,500. Robots and space toys always found a welcome home in the Knowlton collection, and over the years some elusive extraterrestrials joined the fold. The most valuable of the group was a boxy, 15-inch-tall Masudaya Machine Man Robot, rarest

A Bandai (Japan) battery-operated “Walking Batman,” extremely rare, with original Japanese-language box, sold for $43,200 against an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

A Bandai (Japan) Flying “Spaceman Superman” friction ‘cycle, 12 inches long and regarded as the best of all known examples, accompanied by its original box, sold for $57,600 against an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.

The Knapp “Electric Locomotive No. 221” steeple cab locomotive, two-inch gauge, 13 inches long, pristine condition, sold for $18,000 against an estimate of $5,000-$7,500.

A Hubley painted cast-iron Surfer Girl pull toy with figure in green bathing suit, 7.5 inches long, was used to help promote Jantzen swimwear. It sold for more than double the high estimate at $33,600. of the famed Japanese “Gang of Five” robot series. Nearmint and one of the finest of all known examples of its type, it surpassed its high estimate to close at $72,000. Two Bandai productions followed in the Machine Man’s footsteps, chalking up their own celestial prices. A Flying Spaceman friction motorcycle, known as “Flying Superman” to some collectors because of the plastic figure’s cape and S-shield logo, came to auction with its original box. Regarded as the best of all known examples, it soared to $57,600 against an estimate of $12,000-$18,000. With its feet firmly planted on planet Earth, an extremely rare robotic “Walking Batman” with its coveted original Japanese-language box changed hands for $43,200, more than six times the high estimate. A former international cover girl from Germany who later became a New York City art gallerist, Monique Knowlton now joins an impressive list of collectors whose toys have been auctioned by Bertoia’s since the company first opened its doors in 1986. After the auction, Knowlton commented on the long and rewarding relationship she has had with the Bertoia family and how appreciative she is for the guidance they provided during the years she was a bidder at their sales. “When Michael, who now runs the business, was only about 18 years old, he used to personally advise me about which items were genuinely rare. His advice, even then, was very helpful to me. Although he is still young, he is so accomplished and an exceptional auctioneer.” Michael Bertoia is of the opinion that every time a top-tier collection like Monique Knowlton’s appears at auction, it has a positive effect on the toy-collecting hobby as a whole. “The prices paid for Monique’s toys validate what all collectors usually learn very quickly, that it makes sense to focus on toys that are in the best possible condition, preferably with a box,” stated Bertoia. “Monique also proved that even if you have to stretch a bit to acquire a truly rare piece, it’s worth doing because you might not ever have another chance to bid on an example of that particular toy again.
