Early Settler’s Antiques Show Returns To Frederick, Md. One-Day Show Set For Great Frederick Fairgrounds On June 4 The Early Settler’s Antiques Show will be held on Saturday, June 4, at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds in Frederick, Md. The Frederick Fairgrounds is conveniently located off I-70 with easy access to hotels, restaurants, and other area attractions. The show was new last year and a huge success, so promoters Jill Peterson and Christina Hummel are bringing it back. The customers were happy to have a country antiques show in Frederick, and feedback has been enthusiastic from returning dealers. The one-day show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will consist of two buildings filled with dealers from across 19 states. The dealers are chosen for their quality merchandise and their friendly and outgoing personalities that contribute to a great atmosphere. They love sharing and talking about their goods. There is a variety of price ranges, making it a fun show to shop. Starting in 1822 as a cattle show and fair, the fairgrounds have a rich history. It is a great setting for an antiques show, and the town of Frederick is filled with small shops with oldtime history and charm. The fairgrounds are located at 797 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md. The Madison-Bouckville Antiques Weekend celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer with its June and August shows. Started by Jock Hengst with one field on one weekend in 1971 to generate business for the historic Landmark Tavern at the Route 20 crossroads, the show had about 40 dealers in the beginning. The weekend was so successful that in little more than five years, the big field was approaching 1,000 exhibitors, and a series of satellite fields opened. Popeye And Olive Oyl Tank Rolls To World-Record $105,000 At Antique Toy Spectacular New Private Toy Museum In Florida Will Display Prize Popeye toys haven’t seen an appreciable downturn in the collector marketplace at any point in the past 25 years. In keeping with that trend, vintage toys depicting the punchy sailor were “strong to the finich” at Milestone Auctions’ April 9 Antique Toy Spectacular, which grossed $650,000. Powering its way to the top of prices realized, a Linemar Popeye And Olive Oyl Tank with its original pictorial box sold for an astonishing $105,000, a new world auction
record for a Popeye toy. “Everyone, young or old, can relate to Popeye,” said Milestone Auctions co-owner Miles King. “Since first appearing in a 1929 comic strip, Popeye has amused and entertained audiences in a way that sets him apart from other comic or cartoon characters. He’s an eccentric guy who seems to wander naively into one misadventure after another, always getting out of a scrape at the last minute thanks to a can of spinach.
Many of his exploits have translated to toys over the years, and collectors want them all.” One of those collectors is Floridian Ozzie Bilotta, who bid aggressively to claim the Popeye tank, which, ironically, he had owned once before.

The new owner of the boxed Popeye And Olive Oyl Tank is Floridian Ozzie Bilotta, who paid a world-record $105,000 for the toy he had owned once before, around 20 years ago. The tank now holds the title of most expensive Popeye toy ever sold at auction and will join many other rarities, including the boxed Linemar Popeye in Rowboat shown in the background, in the private toy museum Bilotta plans to open this fall in Ponte Vedra, Fla. “I originally bought it in the early 2000s from an Australian seller on eBay,” said Bilotta. “I don’t think they knew much about what they had, because their description wasn’t very specific. The bidding opened at only a few hundred dollars, but I wasn’t the only one after it. I recall having to pay $14,000 or $15,000 for it. At the time, that was a record-setting price for a Popeye toy.” A few years later, when Bilotta’s collecting focus shifted to robots and space toys, he sold the tank privately. For the next 20 years, he never saw or heard of the tank’s whereabouts. But old habits die hard, and even as immersed as he was in the world of sci-fi
private museum Bilotta plans to open this fall in Ponte Vedra, Fla. At the April 9 auction, Popeye proved his strength time and time again. An exceptional example of a boxed Linemar battery-operated Popeye And Rowboat, complete with oars and its correct remote control, glided to $11,000 against a $2,500$3,500 estimate. Bilotta was the winning bidder on this toy, as well. An old favorite with collectors, a 14.5-inch-long Hoge clockwork Popeye Rowboat came complete with its original oars, rudder and desirable Hoge decal. In excellent condition, it more than doubled its high estimate to moor at $9,600. Several now-classic Popeye toys depict the musclebound sailor in boxing or strength-testing pursuits. Two toys from this category, both made by Chein, landed in the auction’s top 10. One was a Popeye Heavy Hitter with its original box, and another, a boxed wind-up Popeye Overhead Puncher. Each of

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Antiques Versus Collectibles, Or Antiques And Collectibles? that collectibles have the edge. Unfortunately though, the starry-eyed speculators who attempt to view everything from this naive perspective cannot see the proverbial forest through the trees. Collectibles are rooted in nostalgia. Nostalgia is fickle and ever changing. Sure, we can debate the fact that Superman and Batman have been going strong for almost 80 years; however, does that mean an Action Comics #1 will always be valued at several million dollars and increase in value year after year? Be careful how you answer here, because we also have to ask if Action Comics #1 is the proverbial blue chip collectible, then how many collectors can afford to actually own a copy? Just because Action Comics #1 continues to rise in value doesn’t mean that every single key issue vintage comic book is a good investment. Make no mistake, the only constant in the antiques and collectibles trade is change. Yes, certain markets have stood the test of time. Coins, historical artifacts, artwork, books, firearms, and the like are prime examples. Does this mean that other markets will easily fade away? It certainly is possible. I could
have plans for at least 150 exhibitors and parking in the rear. In total, there are 14 show fields all with free admission, but some do charge for parking. Typically, there are 2,000 dealers exhibiting for the market in August and a little less in June. Specific show days are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 3, 4, and 5, and from Monday to Sunday, Aug. 15 to 21. The day prior to each listed show
date is set-up day for the dealers, with some fields allowing shoppers entrance. Hotels for visitors and dealers are in Utica and Syracuse, as well as in the nearby college town, Hamilton. easily list names of both antique and collectible categories that are no longer sought after. These objects are considered to be curiosities, shadows of what they once were. I’ll refrain from naming any of these relics here because every time I do, I get some interesting emails from the passionate collectors involved in these markets who are unwilling to see the writing on the proverbial wall, and I can respect that. However, it is a well-known fact that both antique and collectible categories do die out from time to time and never come back. I used to have a very knowledgeable mentor in the trade who kept repeating the mantra that there is no such thing as a bad investment in the antiques and collectibles trade, only bad investors and collectors. Just looking at some of the figures now being tossed around on a regular basis in the trade, from the $300 million dollar painting to the $5 million comic book and the $19 million dollar coin, I think anyone who has been active in the trade for more than a decade can agree, there is room for all of us right now! We just need the cast-iron mechanical bank

the area, situated between Syracuse and Hamilton, N.Y. Among the larger fields, Cider House Antiques has been adding several features since being taken over by Jim

collector and the vintage comic book collector to understand that they have more in common than not, as they are both collectors attempting to create order out of chaos and make life just a little more worth living for those of us who fancy these artifacts, regardless of value. And maybe that is how we should all be viewing this regardless as to whether we are operating in a bull or bear market? After all, isn’t it the passionate collector who wins either way?

It is no secret that the antiques and collectibles trade is in an extremely prosperous bull market at present time. Almost all markets in the trade are hitting astronomical highs. The rise in pop culture collectibles, where everything from vintage comic books to action figures to Pokemon cards to vintage video games are soaring to all-time highs, has been closely watched. Antique markets have not been spared either. Coins, currency, vintage advertising, firearms, collectible books, and certain pieces of art are also rising steadily,. Poll anyone under the age of 40, and you will see that antiques and collectibles are a rising alternate asset class. From the standpoint of someone who is
to invest in the long-term validity of those markets, but to be fair, so-called experts in the trade have been saying that since the 1990s. How is it that these markets are still holding their own after all these decades? I can attest that I know of no collector under the age of 40 who is getting excited over cast-iron mechanical banks or even early American folk art for that matter. But obviously someone is still buying. I have long been a believer that the main differences between antiques and collectibles aside from age is how these markets function over the long term. Antiques are more cyclical than collectibles in most cases, simply because they have stood the test of time. Most coin collectors who have been collecting for many years, if not decades, are smiling ear to ear simply because their collection has increased massively in value in just the last few short years. The same can be said for vintage comic book collectors, which incidentally is a popular collectible among both babyboomers and generation-Xers alike. Still, all one has to do is take a simple look at where the money is headed in the trade, and it is easy to assume

heavily involved in the antiques and collectibles trade, this is good news across the board. Looking at some of the most popular collecting categories at present time begs the question, what about the markets that are either in decline or not experiencing any record highs as of late? I would venture to say there are not too many sellers of brown furniture proclaiming they are experiencing a bull market for their beloved material right now. The same can mostly be said for a lot of other collecting categories that time is bound to forget. Even Tiffany Glass has seen better days than what is happening in that market right now. Primitives and folk art are also not achieving the gains they once were. What is going to happen to some of these markets in another 10 years? The demise of certain collecting categories has always been a hot topic in the antiques and collectibles trade. I am amazed that certain markets continue to break new records. The top of the antique bottle market and the cast iron mechanical bank markets are still going strong. That said, I honestly would not recommend anyone attempt

Explore The Process Of Restoring An 18th-Century Town In A New Exhibition “Restoring Williamsburg” Is Now Open Decades ago, a simple wooden board in use as a shelf was discovered in Belle Farm, an 18th-century house in Gloucester County, Va. It turned out to be much more than an untrained eye would notice at first glance: etched into the surface was the original design for two arches that are still to be seen in the house today. This extraordinary artifact provided Colonial Williamsburg’s architectural historians with valuable information on design development and layout in the last half of the 1700s. The design was later used as the model for the arches in the southwest dining room of the reconstructed King’s Arms Tavern on Colonial Williamsburg’s Duke of Gloucester Street. This etched board is one
of approximately 80 objects that will be on view in “Restoring Williamsburg,” a new exhibition in the James Boswell and Christopher Caracci Gallery at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the recently expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. Opening on Saturday, April 30, the exhibition will reveal how architectural historians and preservationists know what they know and do what they do. Through extremely rare objects and artifacts from the Colonial Williamsburg architectural collection, visitors will gain insights into the restoration and preservation work undertaken since the 1920s at the largest living history museum in the world and offer valuable clues to enhance their exploration of
the Historic Area. “Restoring Williamsburg” will remain on view through December 2024. “The art and science of accurately restoring original 18th-century buildings and meticulously re-creating lost structures had their geneses at Colonial Williamsburg in the 1920s,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the foundation’s vice president for museums, preservation, and historic resources. “As we enter the institutions’ 96th year, this is an exciting opportunity to reflect on the astonishing accomplishments of generations of foundation scholars and tradespeople.” Among the earliest and rarest surviving architectural elements from Williamsburg to be seen in “Restoring Williamsburg” is a ca. 1695 scuttle door from the Nelson-

Galt House on Francis Street, which served as an access hatch for the attic space. Its detailing includes foliated hinges and molded battens, typical of Williamsburg-area buildings in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Another extremely rare object appearing in the exhibition is a wellpreserved 17th-century leaded casement window from Massachusetts. Such early windows were still to be found in Williamsburg as late as the 1760s. Archaeological excavations are the source of most information about the use of casement windows in Williamsburg. For example, the turned leads excavated at the site of Charlton’s Coffeehouse were used to guide the design of the casement windows now seen in the building’s cellar. The discovery of an iron staple in the foundations proved the location of what was by then a very old-fashioned window form. “The architectural elements in the exhibition offer a snapshot of our collection, which forms the basis for the restoration and preservation work undertaken here at Colonial Williamsburg. They not only provide us actual 18th-century profiles, colors, and materials, but help further our understanding of Williamsburg’s 18th-century

Colonial Williamsburg’s ongoing restoration process frequently causes the architectural preservation team to reevaluate their understanding of individual buildings. One of the best examples of this process is illustrated by an overmantel painting of a landscape scene, originally installed in the 18th-century George Reid House. In order to try to date the painting, the team decided to restudy the building itself. Surprisingly, they discovered that the earliest section likely dates to the 1710s, making it the oldest surviving domestic structure on Duke of Gloucester Street. The new exhibition will show not only a rare paint-decorated panel, but explain how paint analysis, conservation, documentary research and architectural investigation combined to update both the
historical record and the physical appearance of an original Historic Area building. “Restoring Williamsburg” is generously funded by Thomas L. and Nancy S. Baker. For anyone fascinated by architectural preservation and those who plan on visiting Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, “Restoring Williamsburg” is a must-see exhibition. Protecting the health and safety of guests, employees and the local community has been one of Colonial Williamsburg’s highest priorities through the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued Feb. 25, Colonial Williamsburg no longer requires guests to wear masks during their visit. Please note that the Federal Transportation Security Administration still requires masks for passengers on all Continued on page 5

Frick To Present Works In Porcelain By Artist Giuseppe Penone
acquisitions of works from the Sèvres, Meissen, and Du Paquier manufactories. Correspondingly, the museum’s activities reflect this abiding focus through exhibitions, publications, and programming. “It has been a pleasure to deepen our perspective on ceramics through selected collaborations with contemporary artists, as we did in 2016–17 with Arlene Shechet and in 2019 with Edmund de Waal. We are thrilled that Giuseppe Penone’s series of Propagazioni offers us a third such opportunity, one that can be enjoyed in close proximity to the third-floor porcelain gallery at Frick Madison, which many cite as a highlight of our new installation. Our presentation of Penone’s group of
beautiful objects, some of the largest ever successfully fired at Sèvres, will further illustrate the expressive potential this fine medium has for artists and museums,” comments Ian Wardropper, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen director. “The lyrical works Penone created at Sèvres respond to the longstanding tradition of the most important porcelain manufactory in France. Notable pieces from Sèvres are among the masterpieces of decorative arts at the Frick, and this exhibition, building on the strengths of previous projects, establishes a direct connection between our collection and the work of a significant artist active today,” added Xavier F. Salomon. Sculptor Giuseppe Penone

created this remarkable group of porcelain disks as a continuation of his Propagazioni (Propagations) series in various media, begun in 1995. Made by hand, the disks involve a production process stretching over long periods of time and reward close and prolonged viewing. Each of 10 white porcelain disks features the imprint of one of Penone’s fingers in black ink; the 11th disk is a variation, rendered in gold. Thin lines extend concentrically from the fingerprint at the center of each disk, resembling the ripple effect in water or the rings that mark a tree’s annual growth. Propagazioni brings together a number of themes that run through the artist’s work, most importantly his relationship to nature and the mutable definition of sculpture. Focusing on skin as the site of contact between humans and the natural environment, these objects call into question the boundaries between drawing and sculpture and between art and nature. As Mr. Penone describes, “When Sèvres asked me to collaborate with them, I simply turned over one of the manufactory’s products, a dish, and asked them to produce convex disks. This required a complex operation given the fluidity of porcelain at high firing temperatures. The prints of my fingers and the drawings I executed for each of the disks were then completed with skillful mastery by the decorators accustomed to the precision and detail that Sèvres porcelain requires. With these works, I wanted to epitomize the complexity of the great tradition to which Sèvres belongs, a tradition whose point of departure, the dish or bowl, is the very first container produced by a human being impressing their hand into a mound of clay.” Principal support for “Propagazioni: Giuseppe Penone at Sèvres” is provided

In the spring and summer of 2022, The Frick Collection will present a oneroom installation by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone (b. 1947) at the museum’s temporary home, Frick Madison. Displayed in the broader context of the museum’s decorative arts and Old Master paintings and sculpture, this unprecedented exhibition by the acclaimed Arte Povera artist is the first to feature his work in the medium of porcelain. Consisting of 11 disks created during a 2013 collaboration with the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory in France, works never before shown publicly, this project invites a dialogue with the Frick’s rich holdings in the medium. Penone’s series of disks will be shown on the third floor in concert with a nearby gallery featuring eighteenth-century porcelains by several renowned manufactories. “Propagazioni: Giuseppe Penone at Sèvres” is organized by Giulio Dalvit, the Frick’s assistant curator of sculpture, and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue authored by Dalvit, with an introduction by Xavier F. Salomon, deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp chief curator. The Frick’s porcelain holdings have increased dramatically in recent years through

Four-Volume Regional History Books Published James Fritz And Gettysburg Institute Of History Put Out Series A four-volume set, titled “Historic Architecture of Adams County, Pennsylvania,” are coffee table books but also a treasure trove of the latest scholarship by celebrated academic scholars with copious citations and foot
notes for the historian. Photographs of the architecture of Adams County’s best appear with an indepth treatment of history about the German Baptists, Mennonites, and Scots-Irish, who predominated in government and secular leadership. This work surveys the influence of the Protestant Reformation, including Martin Luther, the Quaker movement and Puritan efforts to purge the Church of England of its Popish practices held over from the Roman Catholic Church. Yes, many of the early religious divisions traveled from England to the colonies. Maryland was chartered in 1633, almost 49 years before William Penn’s charter, and the narrative describes the thousands of acres of land warranted to the wealthy
Iris Roman Catholic Carroll family of Maryland in the 1720s. Book One The setting for this first volume is the bucolic village of East Berlin. This town has been seemingly suspended in time from the early 19th century. Settled in 1738 by German Baptists, this pacifist religious group created a synergy of family, farm and meeting houses. Their numbers and faith are still there in modern times on their farms and traditional occupations. Their lives also included the central place of some socialization with other ethnic groups at Sweigart’s Mill, located on Beaver Creek. Beautiful photographs of date stones, log structures and brick ender barns provide the reader with a portrait of early farming life. The John Fox House, ca. 1790, adorns the cover of this work. Abbottstown (Berwick Village) was also formed in 1738 and is considered the gateway to Adams County. The county was carved from York County in 1800. The log and German siding home of John Abbott, ca. 1735, remains as a sentinel and introduction to the town. The Captain Peter Ickes House, ca. 1765, also remains as a beacon of 18thcentury architecture and history. Ickes was a Revolutionary War militia officer originally from Montgomery County. The mug created by famous pewterer William Will, of Philadelphia, is featured in this work. The mug resides at the Winterthur Museum. Abbottstown boasts the largest number of extant early
log structures in the region, albeit most are under brick or siding. A “Gilded Age” Victorian beauty overlooking the town circle has been restored by Angelo Galantino. This imposing structure was constructed in 1881 by the celebrated architect, J. A. Dempwolf. The town of New Oxford, with its many buildings and antique shops, is also featured in this work. Book Two This volume presents modern and vintage photographs of Gettysburg and its environs; however, the work begins an architectural journey originating in Lancaster County at Columbia featuring the Ferree House, ca. 1730s, Wrights Ferry House, ca. 1738,
and then crosses the Susquehanna River into York County and arrives at the Dritt Mansion, ca. 1758 at Long Level. Traveling west along Route 30, the work pauses briefly to make comparisons with the General Gates House, ca. 1741, and the half-timbered Plow Tavern in York City. At the branch of Route 30 and Route 116, one encounters

the heretofore uncelebrated Wolf Mansion, ca. 1750. The discovery of the Wolf Mansion in photographs is a major contribution to our local history. It is, arguably, the most sophisticated architecture of its er in York-Adams counties. The interior boasts of carved interior wood paneling and handwrought “rat’s tail” pintles with strap hinges. High style interior “crossette style” interior door frames with thick paneled doors speak of a master joiner-carpenter. Upon arrival in Gettysburg,
the famous Wills House, ca. 1816, is featured along with several outstanding examples of architecture within the borough. Book Three Titled, “African & Dutch (Holland) Experience,” book three chronicles the history and culture of the AfricanAmerican community within Adams County. The discovery is that their story is linked with not only the northward escape from slavery, but also the history of events in Columbia, Pa. More

research begs to be written and stories revealed of the many African-Americans who sought freedom. The brief settlement of a congregation of Dutch Reformed congregants from New Jersey provides a snapshot of history in human migration in the mid-18th century to Adams County.
