George Nakashima Furniture Among Headliners At Ahlers & Ogletree Sale 1966 Walnut Minguren Coffee Table Sold For $74,400 A polished bronze sculpture on a Lucite base by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro (b. 1926), titled “Sfera” and numbered (2 of 6), soared to $186,000 in an online Spring Fine Estates and Collections auction held March 27 and 28 by Ahlers & Ogletree, based in Atlanta, Ga. The work was the top earner in an auction that featured more than 1,000 lots. Pomodoro, now 94 years old, lives and works in Milan. He’s known for having designed a controversial fiberglass crucifix for the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee, Wis., which is topped with a 14-foot diameter crown of thorns that hovers over the figure of Christ. The piece in the auction, 11 inches tall (sculpture, minus base), is in the artist’s online catalogue raisonné. Session one contained Asian arts, Modernism, Mid-Century and Contemporary design, fine art and decorative arts, estate jewelry and fashion. Session two featured period antiques, silver, fine art, important books and maps, antique scientific equipment and tools, and antique weapons. Both auction days were live-streamed on LiveAuctioneers. A collection of five furniture pieces by the renowned American woodworker George Nakashima (1905-90) came up for bid, each one offered as a single lot. All five were from the same seller, who acquired the pieces from her mother, a doctor in Tucson, Az., who purchased them directly from

Nakashima, whose furniture creations are highly prized by collectors. Leading the pack was a walnut Minguren coffee table crafted with rosewood butterfly, several free and raw edges and a natural reticulation, marked to the underside with the original owner’s name. It went for $74,400. Also sold was a walnut hanging wall case ($40,300), a This 1966 walnut Minguren coffee table with rosewood butterfly and several free and “conoid” end table raw edges by George Nakashima, one of five Nakashima pieces in the sale, sold for ($27,900), a set of $74,400. four cherry “New” chairs ($22,320) and a cherry din- titled “Mons Veritatis (Truth articulated sterling silver belt in ing table ($17,360). One of the most popular Superhero toys ever made, an example of Nomura’s 12-inch battery-operated “Walking Batman,” all original (including cloth cape), was accompanied by its super-clean, original pictorial box with a fabulous image of the Caped Crusader, Robin and the Batmobile. It settled just above its high estimate, at $8,100. One of the most comprehensive collections of comic

exterior with images of Mickey, Donald Duck and Clarabelle the Cow. Marked “Made with Permission of Walt Disney Mickey Mouse LTD,” it had been cataloged with an aggressive pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$20,000 but went on to command $34,800. Other popular Disney toys included a scarce 1930s Wells (England) tin windup Minnie Mouse carriage with baby Mickey and Minnie figures inside and Pluto seated on the front bumper. Collectors validated its rarity when a heated bidding competition pushed it to $11,700 against an estimate of $2,500-$3,000. Celluloid Disney toys, which have shown softness in the marketplace for some years, now, found a redeemer in a scarce six-inch-tall Donald Duck in Barrel celluloid windup toy, which sold for $4,680 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,000-$1,500.

They obviously were keeping their items of interest to themselves, as smart bidders often do.” King said he and business partner Chris Sammet have always known that their company had an excellent following among robot and space toy collectors. “We just needed a grouping of robots like the one we had in this sale to prove that we can reach the right buyers and get top prices,” King said. “Not long after the sale we received a call from a robot collector who had seen the results. Now he wants to consign with us.” The robot lineup contained impressive examples of some all-time classics and was led by an elusive Bandai friction-powered “Flying Spaceman on a Super Cycle.” With its original caped, green rubber “Superman” figure wearing its original red and yellow S-logo chest shield and its correct, colorfully illustrated box lid, it was bid to $55,200 against a pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$25,000. The year 2020 was definitely a historic year and one that will go down in the history books. The pandemic ushered in a new way of thinking and a new way of life for most people. Social interactions changed. The way we shop and communicate changed. I have written about the effects of the pandemic on the overall antiques and collectibles trade in previous articles. Online auctions are now firmly cemented as the future of the trade. Politics aside, among all the questions and dilemmas that remain in what is hopefully the end of the pandemic, one that is not often talked about is inflation. If you want to see just how disastrous the effects of inflation can be, look no farther than the current real estate

collectibles have been a good hedge against inflation over the years and decades in which inflation was running at an all-time high. This is only part of the story, however, as in a lot of cases when inflation is running low, certain antiques and collectibles can be horrid long-term investments. I once had a wellversed mentor in the trade who used to remind me that over the short term the antiques and collectibles trade is very predictable, but over the long term it operates much like a casino. I tend to agree with this assessment. For instance, in the year 2020 and heading into 2021, certain collecting categories like vintage “Pokemon” cards, “Magic: The Gathering” cards and collectibles, and even certain vintage video games sold and are selling well on the secondary market. I predict this trend will continue over the next few years. That said, how many of you would be willing to bet money that 20 years from now a lot of these items sell for more than what they are selling for today? I think very few of you would be willing to take this bet. Applying this logic as to whether or not these kinds of collectibles would make a good hedge against inflation is risky as a result. If demand lessons for these items over time, these collectibles would not make a good hedge against inflation long-term. I have often argued with speculators and investors who operate in the antiques and collectibles trade that if one was to assemble a portfolio of collectibles to combat inflation over the long-term that this portfolio should have more established antiques and collectibles in it rather than betting on newer speculative collectibles. “Pokemon” came to the United States in the late 1990s. “Magic: The Gathering” was created in 1993, and most vintage video games selling for incredible

sums right now are from the mid-1980s or later when the original Nintendo Entertainment System hit North American shores. These items are not good inflation hedges in my opinion simply due to the fact that they are unproven as long-term collectibles in the trade. In order to combat inflation over the long term, you need proven antiques and collectibles. Rare coins have a great track record of doing just that, so do high-end pieces of currency, and even vintage sports cards. This is never talked about in the literature that graces most collectible dealers’ or high-profile auction sites, unless they happen to cater to those particular markets. Then it can become a marketing ploy. In conclusion, inflation is something that we all should be concerned about regardless of our political affiliation or personal views on capitalism and the overall health (or lack thereof) of the economic system by and large. Inflation is also something that collectors should also be concerned about because more than likely the collectibles they are holding in a lot of cases are anything but good hedges against the ravaging effects of inflation. This is one myth that the collectibles trade needs to stop promoting, as it can have disastrous consequences to generations for collectors. Does anyone really believe that in the year 2021, Hummel figurines offer a good inflation hedge? I don’t think so. Thank you for reading.

prices and gas prices. People are struggling to keep up with these rising costs, even with stimulus payments. Inflation is nothing new to the overall economy. If we go back to the 1970s, the United States had experienced double digit inflation during that time. Generations that came of age during that time have often tried to warn younger generations as to the disastrous effects of inflation. The antiques and collectibles trade is not immune either. I have already talked about how, at present time, many collecting categories are experiencing massive price appreciation in the trade. Everything from rare investment-grade coins to certain traditional antiques to most pop culture collectibles are soaring in value thanks, in part, to stimulus money being spent on them. Certain auction houses and collectible dealers are even reminding would-be buyers that collectibles can be a great hedge against inflation. It is this very point that I want to discuss in detail because this is actually somewhat of a myth that has been perpetrated over the years. Let me begin this discussion by stating that it is very true that certain antiques and

They were “Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls,” and they bridged the gap between Tiny Tears and Barbie. Doll designer Nancy Ann Abbott was born in 1901 and studied at the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif. However, Hollywood beckoned, and Nancy moved there in search of a film career, scoring minor roles in such movies as “42nd Street.”

Tiny dolls were dressed in outfits Nancy stitched up, resembling the costumes in whatever movie she was working on. The finished products were given as gifts to her friends on the set. When dreams of a Hollywood career dimmed, Nancy moved to San Francisco and opened a bookshop. With the Depression still in full swing, she saved pennies by decorating the shop with her beautifully dressed dolls. The dolls attracted more sales

Salomon, deputy director and Peter Jay Sharp chief curator, and acclaimed author Francine Prose, this new book takes as its subject the celebrated and notorious figure who earned the nickname the “scourge of princes” for his satirical writings on the rich and powerful. After moving to Venice in 1527, Aretino befriended Titian, who went on to paint three portraits of the writer and included his likeness in two other larger works. The portrait in the Frick’s collection, apparently painted in just three days, conveys Aretino’s intellectual power and presents him as a richly robed figure wearing a

graphics holdings rose significantly with an important gift in 1995 from the renowned scholar Tomás YbarraFrausto. Since then, other major donations and an ambitious acquisition program have built one of the largest museum collections of Chicanx graphics on the East Coast. The exhibition will be on view at the museum’s main building through Sunday, Aug. 8. Following its run in Washington, D.C., it will travel to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. The museum’s critically acclaimed exhibition “Alexander von Humboldt and the United States: Art, Nature and Culture” reveals how the influential naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) shaped American perceptions of nature and the way American cultural identity became grounded in our relationship with the environment. It is the first exhibition to examine Humboldt’s impact on five spheres of American cultural development: the visual arts,

The Smithsonian American Art Museum and its branch museum, the Renwick Gallery, reopened to the public May 14. This is the second reopening of the museum following closures on March 14, 2020, and on Nov. 23, 2020, as a public health precaution due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The museum has negotiated extensions into the summer for its three major exhibitions that were shuttered last fall. “I am overjoyed to welcome visitors back to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and our Renwick Gallery to experience our relevant and impactful exhibitions, from powerful and vibrant prints by Chicanx artists and collaborators to a fossilized mastodon skeleton to a new site-specific artwork that transforms an entire gallery at the Renwick into earthly and heavenly realms,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “We also are deeply grateful to the collectors, museums and foundations for their continued generosity during these unprecedented times by agreeing to extend loans, in some cases for a second time, as well as the extraordinary effort of our staff to develop and install these thought-provoking projects.” The landmark exhibition, “Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to Now” was open for a mere three days in November 2020 before the Smithsonian closed for the second time due to the pandemic. The exhibition is the first to unite historic civil rights-era prints alongside works by contemporary printmakers, including several that

Palmer Museum Of Art Showcases The Exuberant Art Of Lucille Corcos

P A

O T J 17 7 C T

768 Graystone Rd. Manheim, PA 17545

“The Wit And Whimsy Of Lucille Corcos” On View

The work by Lucille Corcos, “At Grand Central Galleries, New York,” 1940, 17.5-by-13.5 inches, is watercolor and gouache-on-paper, from the collection of David and Susan Werner. The Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State is pleased to announce “The Wit and Whimsy of Lucille Corcos,” an exhibition featuring the playful work of mid-20thcentury artist and prolific illustrator Lucille Corcos (1908–73). Organized by the Palmer Museum, the exhibition is the first devoted to Corcos in more than 22 years and her first solo museum exhibition ever. “This vibrant exhibition shines the light on a little studied, but influential, figure in the development of the modernist primitivist tradition in American art,” said Erin M. Coe, director of the Palmer Museum of Art. “It provides a rare opportunity to see a broad range of works by an American woman artist who should be much better known.” Lucille Corcos was born

and raised in New York City and studied at the Art Students League in the late 1920s. Following her breakthrough cover for the January 1931 issue of “Vanity Fair,” her work became highly sought after by well-known magazines of the day, including “Fortune,” “Life,” and “Vogue.” In 1941, she and her family moved to upstate New York. She continued to excel in commercial illustration work and exhibited regularly at art galleries and museums, including participating almost annually in group shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the years between 1936 and 1954. “The Wit and Whimsy of Lucille Corcos” examines three pivotal decades of Corcos’s career through more than two dozen of her most significant tempera and watercolor paintings. Her small-scale, almost miniature, paintings in a semi-naive style were lauded for their exactness in detail, multitude of figures, and unique aerial perspective. Corcos pioneered a distinctive cutaway technique that revealed the interiors of buildings, as if granting the observer the ability to see clear through solid walls. The exhibition brings together works recently acquired by the Palmer Museum and loans from several museums and private collections. “Lucille Corcos, both in her life and in her work, had a flair for navigating different milieus, whether it was career ambitions and domestic demands or big-city spectacles and small-town gatherings,” said

Adam Thomas, curator of American art at the Palmer Museum. “Her brightly colored and densely packed scenes often seem to straddle the line between exuberant celebrations and mischievous send-ups of social situations.” The exhibition will be on view at the Palmer Museum of Art through Sunday, May 9. Free timed tickets can be reserved through the www.palmermuseum.psu.edu website to visit Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The museum at the Pennsylvania State University

The work by Lucille Corcos, “Everybody’s Downtown,” 1948, is tempera-on-board, 14.5-by-11-1/8 inches, from the collection of David and Susan Werner. in State College is closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and some holidays. For more information on the Palmer Museum of Art, visit www.palmermuseum.psu.edu.

Beginning in Hartford in the 1910s and 1920s, Avery forged a staunchly independent path as an artist for more than half a century. Two dozen sketches, watercolors, and oils illustrate his early interest in depicting landscapes, which he continued to do throughout his career. Highlights of the show also include rarely seen works from Avery’s summer stay in Collinsville, Conn., in 1930. To add context to these formative experiences and influences, artwork by Avery’s teachers and colleagues from the Connecticut League of Art Students and the Hartford Art School will be displayed along with brochures, reviews, and letters from the Wadsworth’s archives. Seen together, these objects tell the story of Avery’s

artistic roots in Connecticut. The exhibit runs to Oct. 17. About the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Founded in 1842 with a vision for infusing art into the American experience, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is home to a collection of nearly 50,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years and encompassing European art from antiquity through contemporary as well as American art from the 1600s to today. The Wadsworth Atheneum’s five connected buildings, representing architectural styles including Gothic Revival, modern International Style, and 1960s Brutalism, are located at 600 Main St. in Hartford, Conn. sciences, literature, politics and exploration, between 1804 and 1903. It centers on the fine arts as a lens through which to understand how deeply intertwined Humboldt’s ideas were with America’s emerging identity. Prominently featured in the exhibition is the original “Peale Mastodon” skeleton, on loan from the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, with ties to Humboldt, the influential artist Charles Willson Peale and an emerging American national identity in the early 19th century. Its inclusion represents a homecoming for this important fossil that has been in Europe since 1847 and emphasizes that natural history and natural monuments bond Humboldt with the United States. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, July 11. It will not travel. At the museum’s Renwick Gallery, the exhibition “Forces of Nature: Renwick Invitational 2020” examines how nature and art have the power to reframe perspectives and offer moments of release and inspiration in a world that is increasingly chaotic and detached from the physical landscape. Featuring artists Lauren

Fensterstock, Timothy Horn, Debora Moore and Rowland Ricketts, the exhibition showcases the artists’ heightened ecological awareness that stems from a desire to commune with and advocate for the natural world. The artists, who use a wide range of craft media, from fiber and mosaic to metal and glass, examine the long history of art’s power to engage with the natural world through unconventional and highly personal perspectives. “Forces of Nature” is the ninth installment of the Renwick Invitational. Established in 2000, this biennial showcase highlights mid-career and emerging makers who are deserving of wider national recognition. The exhibition will be on view through Sunday, Aug. 15. It will not travel. Other installations that return to public view at the museum’s main building include a focused installation that features recently acquired photographs by Dawoud Bey in conversation with a painting by African American modernist William H. Johnson that refer to the Underground Railroad and “The Automobile and American Art,” featuring a study collection of 100

model cars recently donated by Albert H. Small. At the Renwick Gallery is Janet Echelman’s “ 1.8 Renwick,” the popular fiber and lighting installation suspended from the ceiling of the Grand Salon. About the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery The Smithsonian American Art Museum is the home to one of the most significant and inclusive collections of American art in the world.
