The Ivo Ispani Estate Collection Comes To Briggs Asian Ceramics, Bronzes, Fine Art To Be Sold On June 18 Briggs Auction is pleased to offer the Ivo Ispani estate collection for auction on Friday, June 18. It includes a vast assortment of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ceramics, bronzes, works of art, decorative arts, antique furnishings and more.
This extensive collection reflects Ispani’s love of the art and crafts of Japan and China, that were his lifelong passion. His scholarship and love of research is inherent in the attention to detail every piece in this collection evinces, including his extensive collection of reference books that grew exponentially over the years. This carefully curated auction is a testament to his good taste and love for the workmanship of this material, and, in a way, it all started with a pair of jeans. Ispani began his career as a waiter on cruise ships in the 1970s. On one cruise to Odessa in Ukraine, he traded a pair of jeans for a Russian icon, and that first purchase sparked his interest in antiques. He left the cruise ship
to work for an antique dealer in Italy, where he learned and expanded his trade. He eventually made his way to the U.S., became a citizen, and continued as an antiques dealer with a reputation for integrity and honesty and a true enjoyment of the people he met through his business, many who became lifelong friends. Highlights of the sale will include a fine Chinese carved hardwood bench with detailed cloisonne panels; a collection of Japanese Hirado-ware sake cup stands; a scholar’s table screen collection; several Japanese Kano School painted screens; a collection of Japanese woodblock prints; some antique furnishings, including a Gothic carved walnut bedroom suite
and a Chinese Chippendale mahogany breakfront china cabinet; a collection of contemporary art, as well as a fine selection of antique paintings and prints; and, of course, the extensive reference library. “He had an excellent eye for finding hidden gems, and we are incredibly honored to handle this collection in its entirety,” says Stephen Turner, owner of Briggs Auction Inc. “We miss his presence in the industry keenly and hope that this auction will spur new and seasoned collectors alike to keep his spirit alive, and hopefully alight their own passion for these pieces.” Bidding for this auction will be entirely online through Briggs Auction’s Bid At Briggs platform Continued on page 2

it takes to pull together this huge show, Ray and Martha Stokes and daughter Lesley, co-owners of Heritage Promotions, began investing their time and resources coupled with an amazing amount of optimism to once again begin laying the groundwork, hopeful that they could bring the twice postponed 66th edition of their antiques extravaganza back to the Augusta Expo in Fishersville, Va. It wasn’t an easy task with so much uncertainty, but the show occured and was an incredible success, overflowing with positive comments from the hundreds of dealers and thousands of customers who attended. Ray Stokes, the promotor of the show, said that nearly without exception, the dealers outpoured their gratitude for having the opportunity to set up at a live show again. Quite a few exhibiting dealers shared that they had the best show in many years. The auction market is certainly showing strength, and this energy seems to be carrying over into good levels of business being conducted at shows. One longtime, loyal dealer said it was the best show he had ever had at Fishersville. And it wasn’t just Continued on page 5

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography, American fraternal societies and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Everyone is thinking it, and a few are muttering it, but I am going to say that the market is back. Two weeks ago, a friend of mine who is an auctioneer in Chester Springs had an online sale. It was a nice assemblage of traditional antiques along with some nice quality Pennsylvania German arts. I left bids on a bunch of things thinking that I would win one or two of the pieces. A few of the bids were pretty strong retail prices because I really liked the item. Well, to quote my long gone grandfather, the bidding went past me like a pay car passing a tramp (for those of you who are old enough to know that phrase, you will know that I am talking about crazy high bidding!
a year and perhaps are ready to think about new furnishings. Antiques are environmentally friendly since they are all about recycling. So perhaps we stand at that moment of a rebirth in collecting and all those minimalists are going to throw off the yoke of bare walls and embrace stuff.

Pennsylvania German world, the George Scott, Paul Flack, Henry Deyerle, Dick Machmer, Richard Flanders Smith, Donald Shelley sales all drove the market to new highs in that general period. The market had expanded with money and stuff and thus the boom. I recall collectors talking about investing in $100,000 Windsor chairs to then sell them for $145,000 and that this was a better return than stocks or bonds. And then the market fell out. We have been in a reshaping of that market. Yes, older collections are coming on the market, but perhaps not at the same level as those older collections just mentioned. And if you go back further in time, you have the Garbisch sale with its gigantic multi-volume catalog that helped introduce the Scotts, Flacks, Machmers and others to collecting. The market is not a straight curve up but rather peaks and valleys. Seeing what I saw in the last several weeks convinces me that we may be on our way back to a new market. People have lived at home for

4 Floors (Including 2 Artist Galleries) The next weekend, I was in Adamstown thinking I would see what was new. Well, I had lines to deal with in all the malls with people rushing to buy things. Prices still seemed reasonable, particularly on old school collectibles like cookie cutters and luster ware (both of which are still undervalued); however, I saw a lot going out the door representing every type of antique. And it was not just single purchases, but it was lots of stuff including furniture and quirky items. I recall with the crash of 2008-09 and then subsequent downturns that people saw the end of the antiques world. No one was ever going to collect again, and it was over. This coupled with the millennial predilection for experience over things put a tailspin into the market. To me, it was part of the ebb and flow of collecting. The heady market of the 1980s and 1990s was built upon not only lots of money, but also the appearance of large collections assembled by older generations of collectors. So in the

their willingness to strike a bargain. It made for a great show for everybody. When asked what he thought about the show, another customer simply responded, “Well, I didn’t see anybody leave empty handed!” So, Fishersville #66 finally happened 573 days later. At the end of the day, it wasn’t just about antiques and collectibles, dealers and customers, or buying and selling. The show offered much more to everyone who attended, just a little bit of getting back to a sense of normalcy. That was the catalyst for all the smiles, welcoming
greetings and friendly conversations, which ultimately resulted in lots of happy dealers and customers alike. Yes, the Fishersville Antiques Expo is back. Back in business and looking forward to the 67th show, which is set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9. Hope to see you there. that the dealers had great sales over the weekend. Many shared their exhilaration with the friendliness and enthusiasm of the customers, both loyal show-goers as well as new treasure hunters. Many dealers said that the customers were very eager just to be there and seriously shop. But it seems that was a two-way street. One customer who has attended nearly all of these shows in the last 20 years shared with the Stokeses that the excitement of the dealers was obvious at virtually every booth, manifested in their smiles, friendly attitudes, and particularly

Rare Portraiture Of Indigenous Americans On View At The Met important record of their time, the works had a significant influence on Euro-American understandings of Indigenous peoples,” said Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met. “In addition to presenting Bodmer’s outstanding paintings, the exhibition will also reflect, through presentday voices of Indigenous communities, powerful critical perspectives, expanding our considerations of these works.” “Karl Bodmer: North American Portraits” will offer an invaluable window onto the North American interior and its Indigenous communities at a pivotal moment. At the time of the BodmerMaximilian journey, in 1833–34, the upper Missouri River remained largely unknown to non-Native people beyond a small network of traders and trappers. Traveling through the tribal lands of the Omaha, Mandan, Hidatsa, and Blackfoot,
among many nations, Bodmer and Maximilian witnessed Plains tribes at the height of their powers before widespread Euro-American settler

The exhibition will feature a multi-vocal approach with interpretive texts authored by Indigenous historians, artists, and tribal elders from the communities visited by Bodmer and the German explorer and naturalist, Maximilian, Prince of WiedNeuwied, who hired Bodmer for the scientific expedition to the northwestern reaches of the Missouri River. The exhibition is made possible by the Warner Foundation Fund and the Louis and Virginia Clemente Foundation Fund. It is organized by the Margre H. “Karl Bodmer: North American Portraits” will present a compelling visual response to Native North America through watercolors created in the 1830s by the Swiss draftsman Karl Bodmer (1809–93). Bodmer was one of the most accomplished and prolific European artists to travel the Missouri River and one of the first to document both the landscapes of the American interior and its Indigenous peoples. The exhibition, on view at The Met through Sunday, July 25, is the first to focus primarily on Bodmer’s portraiture. It will feature 35 portraits along with six landscape and genre scenes and several aquatints, all from Joslyn Art Museum’s comprehensive Bodmer holdings. The works will be arranged in three gallery spaces corresponding geographically to the 5,000-mile round-trip journey from Saint Louis, Mo., to present-day

colonization and dispossession. Often executed in situ among his subjects, Bodmer’s watercolor portraits convey a compelling immediacy. A meticulous draftsman, he produced watercolors that are notable for their acute sensitivity of observation and subtle, refined brushwork. Bodmer’s precise eyewitness attention to facial likeness, body decoration, and regalia distinguishes his work. His portraits were created through diplomatic and social exchanges described in Maximilian’s extensively detailed journals, one of which will be included in the exhibition. Bodmer’s watercolors served as the basis for subsequent aquatints issued by Maximilian between 1839 and ’43, two of which will be on view alongside related watercolors. Highlighting the diverse histories, beliefs, and practices embodied in Bodmer’s work, written contributions from community voices, including Gerard Baker (Mandan/Hidatsa), Abaki Beck (Blackfeet and Red River Métis), Jessa Rae Growing Thunder (Fort Peck Assiniboine/Sioux [Sisituwan/Wahpetuwan/Ho he]), Dakota Hoska (Oglála Lakota, Pine Ridge, Wounded Knee), Frank Buffalo Hyde (Onondaga Nation, Beaver Clan), and Beth Piatote (Nez Perce), about specific watercolors provide valuable insights into the lives of the men and women portrayed by the artist and the ongoing significance and challenges presented by these images of cultural encounter. “Karl Bodmer: North American Portraits” marks the first in a series of displays in a section of the American Wing’s Erving and Joyce Wolf Gallery that respond to the dynamic long-term installation “Art of Native America: The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection.” Debuting in that
Karl Bodmer (Swiss, Riesbach 1809–93 Barbizon) painted this portrait of Péhriska-Rúhpa, Hidatsa Man, 1834, a watercolor and graphite on paper, 17 1/8-by-11 15/16 inches, courtesy of Joslyn Art Museum, gift of the Enron Art Foundation (1986.49.275). gallery in 2018, the installation now features ongoing rotations of Indigenous American work, historical, modern, and contemporary. At The Met, “Karl Bodmer: North American Portraits” is curated by Thayer Tolles, Marica F. Vilcek curator of American Painting and Sculpture, in consultation with Patricia Marroquin Norby (Purépecha), associate curator of Native American Art, both in The Met’s American Wing, and Annika K. Johnson, associate curator of Native American Art at Joslyn Art Museum. Following its presentation at The Met, the exhibition will travel to Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Neb. (Oct. 2, 2021, to Jan. 2, 2022), and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth,
Texas (Oct. 29, 2022, to Jan. 22, 2023). The exhibition will be accompanied by a 224-page fully illustrated catalogue, “Faces From the Interior: The North American Portraits of Karl Bodmer.” Published by Joslyn Art Museum and distributed by University of Washington Press, it includes essays by leading academic and museum scholars Toby Jurovics, Scott Manning Stevens (Akwesasne Mohawk Nation), Lisa Strong, Kristine K. Ronan, and Annika K. Johnson. The first publication to focus on Bodmer as a portraitist, it provides new perspectives on Euro-American encounters with 19th-century Indigenous communities in the American West. The Promise Collection boosts the best known copy of All Star Comics No. 33 (CGC NM+ 9.6).

in the collection. I am honored and thrilled Heritage was selected to represent the collection.” Put simply, “The Promise Collection will go down in history as one of the greatest comic book finds of all time,” says Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen. About 300 of the books will debut in Heritage’s Comics and Comics Art Signature Auction on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 17, 18, and 19. Among them will be a CGC NM+ 9.6 copy of Detective Comics No. 140, in which the Riddler makes his debut; a CGC NM+ 9.6 issue of Phantom Lady No. 17, a Top 5 Golden Age cover per a recent poll; and a CGC NM- 9.2 copy of the “weird tales” Captain America Comics No. 74,
featuring the Red Skull and an extraordinarily scarce title in any condition. Each is the very best-known issue for each title, like almost every other discovery in The Promise Collection. Sales from this extraordinary assemblage will continue through 2022. “When Ed and I first saw the collection, it didn’t take us long to realize that it had all the earmarks of a top-tier pedigree, great colors, off-white or better pages and consistent high grades,” said Allen. “It’s hard to overstate how unbelievable this collection truly is. Each box we open contains more and more treasures from the Golden Age of comic books, comics that I only previously dreamed I would come across in near-mint to mint condition.”
For a long, long time, The Promise Collection was just a cache of comics in an attic, treasures stored in chests made of cardboard. In the early 1950s, a young man named Robert was drafted by the Army to fight in Korea. His younger brother, known as Junie, enlisted in the hopes of keeping watch over Robert. Junie had but one request of his big brother, that Robert take care of his collection of funny books should anything happen to him in battle. Junie had been a collector since he was a little boy, not because of the value but because of the stories. Throughout the 1940s, he amassed a collection of more than 5,000 Golden Age books Continued on page 11

Beginning in June, Heritage Auctions will bring to market more than 5,000 high-grade Golden Age comic books that haven’t seen the light of day since they were purchased off newsstands in the 1940s. The Promise Collection, as it’s now called, was assembled by a young boy who grew up, went to war and never returned. For decades, the books were kept safe by the brother who vowed to keep watch over the comics should anything happen to his sibling on the battlefield. Hence its moniker, proof of a promise kept. The Promise Collection is one of the rare assemblages recognized as a pedigree by the Certified Guaranty Company and it’s “the highest-quality pedigree collection, book for book, to debut in our hobby in the last 25 years,” says Heritage Auctions’

and treated each with kid gloves. Robert knew how dear those books were to his brother, so he promised him. Yes, of course. He would take care of those funny books. If something happened. God forbid. Then Junie was killed in action. He was 21 years old. When Robert returned home from war, he made good on that promise. With great care and caution, he boxed up his brother’s comic books and placed them in an attic for safe storage. And there they sat, undisturbed, for half a century. In time, Robert and his family returned to those boxes to revisit what Junie had left behind. There they discovered what proved to be one of the

Golden Age Comics. The Promise Collection features countless superhero sought-afters, including the best-known copy of All Star Comics No. 33 (CGC NM+ 9.6), featuring the Justice Society of America and Grundy; More Fun Comics No. 101 (CGC NM 9.4), containing the first appearance of Superboy; and 1946’s Captain America Comics No. 59 (CGC NM/MT 9.8), which retells Cap and Bucky’s origin stories. Among the first Promise Collection books to hit the market is Detective Comics No. 114, whose grade of CGC NM/MT 9.8 makes it the best known. This issue not only features The Joker but also boasts a rare “double cover,” when it was bound with two covers instead of the intended single cover. Here, too, are some of the most coveted science-fiction titles of the era, including
from 1946, Contact Comics No. 12, which is graded CGC NM+ 9.6. This is the sole highestgraded copy of one of the most popular and soughtafter Golden Age books in the hobby, in large part because of its cover by L.B. Cole. Another Cole classic is also featured in The Promise Collection, Mask Comics No. 1, published in 1945. Graded CGC VF+ 8.5, this is, again, the single highest-graded copy of the issue. Overstreet rightly calls this the “fairies to a flame” cover. As Fantagraphics noted upon publication of its longawaited Cole retrospective in 2015, the artist created “some of the most bizarre, protopsychedelic, eye-popping comic book covers of all time.” “Eye-popping,” as good a description as any of The Promise Collection.
