Bronze Tibetan Buddha Brings A Record

A rare gilt bronze Tibetan Buddha blasted through a $200-$300 pre-sale estimate to finish at a staggering $200,000 in an online Fine Estates Auction held March 24 by Briggs Auction Inc. The piece, pulled from a Main Line, Pa., estate, generated auction fever from almost the moment it was posted until the hammer came down. It was the most ever paid for a single item at Briggs Auction Inc.

What made this Buddha so special? “It was right, and of exceptional quality,” said Stephen Turner, president and owner of Briggs Auction Inc. “The figure was unusually large at 13 inches tall, and very heavy. The underside of the statue bore a Yongle mark, which added to its historical significance. And the piece’s nearly excellent condition certainly added to its value.”

The Tibetan bronze seated Buddha on a carved, 5-inch-tall stand showed a serene-faced figure wearing a draped robe, posed in quiet contemplation on a lotus base, making a graceful vitarka mudra with his right hand. Other highlights from the sale included a large format oil-on-canvas portrait of a

partially-clad beauty, titled “Lorelei” ($32,000); a large set of Georg Jensen Pyramidian pattern sterling flatware with serving pieces ($6,000); a rare Thomas Crow (Wilmington, Del.) signed pocket watch with fusée movement and enameled dial

($5,500). A set of four Gio Ponti Model 116 walnut dining chairs for Singer & Sons sold for $2,800, and a Hasui Kawese woodblock of colorful iris flowers, signed at the bottom, realized $2,600.

Some top lots included in those earlier sales were a ca. 1921 life-size portrait of a seated woman purportedly Mary Anderson Pew (Mrs. Joseph N. Pew, founder of the Sun Oil Co.) by Hungarian artist Philip de Laszlo ($12,500); a 19th century oil-on-canvas by Mary Smith depicting rabbits eating a watermelon ($8,000); a 1967 Ford Mustang convertible with original red paint and black top and interior ($15,000); and an Italian snuff box in brass and beveled glass depicting various mythological scenes in a fitted velvet case ($7,000). An oil-onboard winter landscape depicting Deborah’s Rock in West Chester, Pa., by 20th century Pennsylvania artist John Suplee brought $2,600, and a special Beatrix Potter/Peter Rabbit Collection auction in January saw three Harrison Cady original Peter Rabbit watercolorand-ink paintings realize $2600, $1700, and $1300, respectively.

“The year is off to a great start,” emphasized Turner. “We have some wonderful collections coming up over the next few months, and we’re confident the rest of the year will be just as big and appealing to our bidders.”

This summer, the Brandywine Museum of Art will present the first major museum exhibition dedicated to the exquisite, nature-based works of pioneering American modernist painter Joseph Stella (1877-1946). On view Saturday, June 17, through Sunday, Sept. 24, “Joseph Stella: Visionary Nature” will feature more than 80 paintings and works on paper revealing the breadth of the artist’s multifaceted practice and his complex response to the spiritual qualities he felt in nature. The exhibition was initiated by the Brandywine and co-organized with the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Ga.

Stella is best known for the series of dynamic, futuristinspired paintings of New York that launched his career, specifically of the Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island, created between 1913-20. As this exhibition will reveal, he also created exuberant depictions of organic form for over three decades. His subjects included bold, stylized compositions featuring exotic plants and birds, religious works incorporating elaborate floral motifs, and tropical fantasies inspired by visits to North Africa and Barbados. Stella experimented with media ranging from silverpoint to watercolor to oil. His

close observation and spiritual responses to nature shaped a poetically transcendent body of work that combines elements of realism and fantasy.

The Last True Real American Hero

way to advertise its new 12inch poseable line of toys celebrating the various branches of the U.S. military. The line

was named G.I. Joe, and it became one of the most successful toy lines in the 1960s. Unfortunately for Hasbro, consumer sentiment would sour on the brand right around the start of the Vietnam War, so Hasbro decided to rebrand G.I. Joe as Adventure Team in 1970. As a result, it would take almost a full decade for Hasbro to take the line back to the proverbial drawing board and add a unique twist to the now iconic toy line. G.I. Joe would be relaunched in 1982 in a new, smaller 3 3/4-inch size and be promoted with a deeply engaging story line. New characters, new vehicles, and a whole new enemy would bring in a new generation of fans. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, as it was now called, would face a ruthless worldwide terrorist organization known as COBRA, which allowed Hasbro to create an incredible (and usually unbelievable) cast of characters and vehicles with names like Serpentor, the Rattler, and the HISS Tank.

The toy line would launch with an animated television series that would last two seasons and a comic book published by Marvel Comics that would run for 155 issues. Upon release, the toy line was a massive success and placed Hasbro in striking distance of capturing key market share from Kenner Toy’s beloved “Star Wars” line that launched in 1978. This new G.I. Joe toy

line would last until 1994, a full 12 years before quietly being phased out, but never quite forgotten by Hasbro or its legion of diehard fans. During that time, the toys would go through some drastic changes and be almost unrecognizable in later years as the company experimented with ridiculous characters decked out in neon colors and other gimmicks to attempt to keep the brand fresh and attract new fans.

Today, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is known as one of the most memorable toy lines of the 1980s, ranking up there with other heavyweights such as Transformers, Masters of the Universe, and, of course, the undisputed king of the 1980s toy lines, “Star Wars.” The G.I. Joe line even gave birth to several live action movies with all-star casts, the first of which was launched in 2009 and titled “The Rise of Cobra.” Hasbro has not given up on the brand either, as much like Mattel’s Masters of the Universe, the company has tried relaunching the line several different times with mixed reactions from fans and newcomers alike. Sadly, as I have stated in previous articles about the struggle with vintage toy lines being relaunched in the modern era, it is hard to bring in new fans to some of these franchises, as many of today’s children are not as interested in action figures as previous generations. As such, most of the consumers who flock to these relaunches are collectors and enthusiasts who grew up with the original toy line and not new consumers, much like Mattels’ Masters of Universe and even Hasbro’s Transformers toy line from the same era. Unfortunately, neither of these toy lines are on par with “Star Wars,” because “Star Wars” was able to capture generations of fans and is considered the proverbial “blue chip” vintage line of toy collecting.

Still, prices for vintage and factory-sealed G.I. Joe toys from the 1982 line are trending at close to all-time highs right now compared to what you would have paid for some of these high quality specimens before the pandemic. Both social media, online collecting forums, and even YouTube continue to put a lot of these vintage toy lines front and center, keeping demand from a generation of enthusiasts that grew up with them at an all-time high. That said, Mego Toys were once king of the proverbial block in the 1970s, and today, interest in that brand has started to wane. And while toy collecting is one of the most popular categories in the entire antiques and collectibles trade, it does not mean that what is popular today is always going to be popular. For instance, Lego has dominated the toy market simply by creating a buildable

A trial run of the Tailgate show took place in October 2016. Even with the threat of early snow in the forecast, the result was a full field of great dealers set up with a wide array of quality material. Originally taking place at Walker Homestead in Brookfield, Mass., the show was moved to New Hampshire in 2019 when the partners opened Flying Pig Antiques in Westmoreland.

The most recent Tailgate show on May 25 was very well attended and followed by a birthday party/cookout for

three Flying Pig associates. “It was invigorating and a lot of fun,” remarked Kris Casucci after the show.

The 2023 show schedule continues with dates of June 22, July 20, Aug. 24, Sept. 14, Oct. 19 and Nov. 16. The Flying Pig shop opens at 8 a.m., with coffee and pastries for all. Dealers are strongly urged to arrive early for the best spaces. Admission is free of charge, and there is plenty of parking.

Family Memories A Brief History Of A Lance Distributor And Collector

My father, Mervin Diehl of Shippensburg, Pa., began working for Lance Inc. around 1971. At the time, salesmen/delivery drivers had to purchase their own trucks. His first truck was a Chevy Econoline panel truck, and he advanced to a bigger box truck, similar to a bread truck. It was all white with decals on the sides and back, including the famous slogan for Lance in the those early years, “Don’t Go Round Hungry.” The Lance snack food company started in 1913 and is known for its sandwich crackers. Just like other major consumer brands, its glass display jars, sales racks, and other items from the second and third quarter of the 20th century are collectible.

My mother did his bookkeeping at night for his sales. At that time, it was strictly a cash sales enterprise. They would sit together at a small desk with a calculator, pad, and pencil or pen each evening after dinner. Dad would count the loose change and go through every single coin, and Mom would calculate the day’s sales on the calculator, pad and pencil. Together, it would take them a few hours each night, followed by a trip to the bank first thing in the morning.

We rented a small garage to store the Lance products. It was owned by Art Bigler and was located behind his grocery store at the corner of Orange and South Washington

streets. A tractor trailer from Lance would deliver a weekly shipment of goods every Wednesday. Following the delivery, an inventory had to be taken to ensure everything was correct. At that time, a new order was placed for the following week.

Dad would go to the warehouse each evening at the end of his daily route to restock for the next day’s business. He worked long hours Monday through Friday and most Saturday mornings, although Saturday mornings usually consisted of banking, checking on the warehouse, and vending machines in town. A frequent stop was the Hub City Club to chit chat and socialize. During the week, he would often start around 8 a.m. and get home around 6:30 or 7 p.m.

His route consisted of Shippensburg, Green Village, Scotland, Roxbury, Orrstown, Newville, and parts of Carlisle. Initially, this region was not that big. During his employment, his route was decreased three times because he continually acquired new customers. His stops included many different types of businesses, including “mom and pop” gas stations, restaurants, small familyowned stores, golf clubs, and school cafeterias. It eventually broadened to include grocery stores. Any place that would accommodate a counter display or jar of Lance products, he would service.

His products were displayed in glass jars with lids

that sat on the counter of the businesses. For larger customers, a wire rack that stood on the floor would be assembled to hold individual food products or glass jars. Others had vending machines which he was responsible for fixing if the need arose.

The Lance product line grew as the years went by. The cracker line consisted of several varieties which are still sold today. But the other products included peanuts (plain, honey roasted, hot, etc.), bags of different chip varieties, corn chips, pork rinds, fig bars, oatmeal cream

pies, marshmallow pies, and the Van-O-Lunch and Choc-OLunch cookies (vanilla and chocolate filled with vanilla cream). I’m sure there were others, but I remember these the most. Bulk sales were made to the school cafeterias for soup crackers, both saltines and captain’s wafers.

Dad was an extremely dedicated worker, never missing a day of work other than when he had abdominal surgery. He worked during heavy snow storms and blizzards. He may have started

later in the day during blizzards, but serviced his sales route nonetheless. He gained many friends throughout his routes and businesses and was well liked. He spent a lot of time talking to his customers and building a relationship that lasted his 25-year career. Dad died in 1997 of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was still working for Lance at the time.

His funeral and viewing was attended by many in

the community, so many that the line of people waiting to enter the funeral home to pay their respects was out the door for several blocks.

In conjunction with Father’s Day, Interstate 81 Antiques at 15 Hershey Road, Shippensburg, Pa., will be holding a sale from Thursday to Sunday, June 15 to 18. Diehl family Lance collectibles will be for sale, and, of course, Lance products will be at the shop, free of charge.

dominated the toy market simply by creating a buildable universe set around some of the most popular pop culture licenses ever created. Just look at what certain factory-sealed vintage Lego “Star Wars” sets are selling for at present time, and you will see what I mean. The current value of the Lego “Star Wars 10123: Cloud City” that premiered in 2003 is sitting around $4,500 if the set is in factory-sealed and near-mint condition due to the fact that in 2003 very few people were hoarding and attempting to speculate in brand new factory-sealed Lego “Star Wars” sets. One should use caution if attempting to speculate and invest in toys, especially vintage toys that may cost thousands of dollars. The market for vintage toys, while huge, is also very fickle, and demand can change almost overnight. I assure you there was a time when collectors argued that Lionel toy trains would always be collected, PEZ dispensers would soar to new heights, and Atari video games would always be the dominant force in vintage video games. Unfortunately, all of these predictions turned out to be incorrect, and no one could have predicted the rise of “Pokemon” and the current speculation bubble surrounding Funko Pop figurines, yet here we are in 2023. Looking forward, G.I. Joe does not appear to be a sustainable toy line for the

Continued from page 3 long term, and as someone who grew up with the brand in the 1980s, I wish that wasn’t the case. Yet here I am in my 40s surrounded by Nintendo video games, Playstation, and Lego. Who in the early 1980s could have predicted this? It’s a shame the antiques and collectibles trade doesn’t come with a crystal ball. Just like the tagline of the G.I. Joe animated series, I guess knowing is half the battle in understanding the longterm validity of these markets. Until then, Go Joe!

St. Paul’s was completed in 1906 and was supported in part by merchant John Wanamaker, of Philadelphia department store fame. Not a member of the church but a dedicated Presbyterian, Wanamaker was known to lend to various evangelical causes.

This is where the history of the windows sadly turns murky. According to period newspaper accounts, the church’s dedication did not mention the windows were by Tiffany Studios but were included in the company’s 1910 list of commissions as “Wanamaker Memorial.”

Fast forward to 1972, the congregation of St. Paul’s sold the church building to the Hickman Temple AME Church. The AME church closed several years ago, and the church building was again sold in 2022, this time to the Emmanuel Christian Center, who is conducting a

renovation of the Gothic space into a modern youth worship center. Back to the murky history, in poor condition, covered in filth, and due to a lack of historical record keeping, a recent historic assessment and nomination for the building did not include mention of the Tiffany windows. As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, among other sources, Brown learned about the windows through Facebook Marketplace and paid the Emmanual Christian Center $6,000 for the pair as well as wooden pews, doors, and some other items in the fall. Still no knowledge they were from the Tiffany Studios, but seeing potential, it was up to Brown to have the windows removed, after which he took them to Freeman’s Auction House for an appraisal. Freeman’s had them professionally cleaned and learned of the Tiffany Studios manufacture. They were each given an estimate of $150,000$250,000.

As reported by the New

York Times, the pastor of the Emmanuel Christian Center didn’t know of potential monetary value of the windows when selling them to Brown. Construction of the new church is suspended according to the Philadelphia Inquirer because the congregation has run out of money. Also reported, the Christian Center had asked an attorney to negotiate with Brown for a portion of the proceeds. “The church is getting 25 percent of the net proceeds,” stated Brown to Antiques & Auction News following the sale. The figure comes out to $50,000. Each window brought $100,000 ($126,000 with buyer’s premium) at Freeman’s Design Sale held May 18. The auction house stated the buyer wishes to remain anonymous.

recent ‘Fragile Earth’ exhibition,” said Thomas Padon, the James H. Duff director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. “By assembling the best of his work from private and museum collections across the country, we are delighted to reintroduce the breadth of Joseph Stella’s thrilling artistic vision to our visitors,” added Padon.

Born in a small town in the mountains of southern Italy, Stella immigrated to New York in 1896. He briefly attended medical school before studying with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and Shinnecock Summer School of Art, from 1898 through 1901.

Stella returned to Italy in 1909, spending the next several years in Europe and eventually making his way to Paris in 1912, where he was first exposed to the artistic strategies of Cubism, Futurism and Dada art. After his arrival back in New York in 1913, Stella established a reputation as a leading avant-garde artist whose work conveyed the energy of the city and modern life.

Stella’s most enduring acclaim came from his Cubist/Futurist body of work inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge. By 1919, however, a nostalgia for what he recalled as the “blue distances of my youth in Italy” and a visceral feeling of being suffocated by New York led Stella to turn away from urban imagery towards forms found in nature.

“Visionary Nature” begins with works that demonstrate how Stella’s exposure to Cubism, Futurism and Dadaism impacted his earliest naturebased subjects. Experimenting with color and materials, the artist produced luminous floral paintings on glass and employed natural materials like leaves and tree bark in innovative collages. The exhibition continues with a selection of Stella’s silverpoint renderings of botanical form, a medium and subject that would engage him his entire career. Next is a selection of work that grew out of Stella’s recurrent trips back to Italy after 1921, revealing a continued visual and metaphorical exploration of his roots. These paintings are lightfilled landscapes with fulsome, often highly stylized flora and fauna; some even feature oversized Madonna figures, a direct reference to the liturgical traditions of his youth.

Included also are studies of plants and flowers inspired by Stella’s frequent visits to the New York Botanical Gardens and the elaborate, operatic compositions, full of drama and movement, that emerged from those visits, as well as his travels to Italy, North Africa and Barbados. “Stella’s 1937 journey to Barbados profoundly resonated with him, and he wrote ecstatically of its beauty and how it reinvigorated and

inspired him,” said Audrey Lewis, associate curator at the Brandywine Museum of Art and co-curator of the exhibition. When Stella’s health began to suffer around 1940, however, he turned inward, creating small, exquisite silverpoints of flowers in his studio. These works would remain Stella’s focus until his death in 1946.

Nature” is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, published by the Brandywine andthe High Museum of Art, featuring essays by Stephanie Heydt, the High’s Margaret and Terry Stent curator of American art and lead exhibition curator; Ara H. Merjian, professor of Italian studies at New York University; Ellen Roberts,

curator of American art at the Norton Museum of Art, where the exhibition previously traveled; Karli Wurzelbacher, Heckscher Museum of Art curator; and an annotated timeline by the Brandywine’s Audrey Lewis.

The Brandywine will be the final stop for this exhibition, which previously traveled to the Norton Museum of Art in

story of the artist’s relationship with her father, but also explores the complex narratives and messages around labor, identity, and tradition that shaped her upbringing in a multicultural immigrant household. The ways in which the stories we tell shape our relationships is at the center of secondplace winner Suzi Fox’s work.

Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” lends its title to Fox’s sculptural reimagining of the clamp, a device designed to bind or constrict things together, while “Gentle Persuaders” uses hammers as a metaphor for the ways in which we communicate our ideas. Third-place winner John R.G. Roth tells stories of changing climates, human activity in the landscape, and the ways we care for

the earth through the creation of exquisite miniature worlds. Anna Hitchcock’s “These Hands Are Getting Heavy,” the exhibit’s honorable mention winner, explores what we expect from survivors of trauma and sexual violence as they tell their stories.
