58th Annual Lititz Antiques Show Planned New Location To Host June 25 And 26 Event The Lititz Historical Foundation is proud to present its 58th annual Antiques Show on Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26. The show will be held in a new location at the Lititz Rec Center, located at 301 Maple St., Lititz, Pa. It is a dealer friendly show that also has a strong regional collector following. There will be 38 dealers, including Cheryl Mackley, Jeffrey Ricketts, and Steve Sherhag, just to name a few. A food truck will be on-site. For directions or further information, call the Lititz Historical Foundation during business hours at 717-627-4636 or email Tom Oehme at thomocc @yahoo.com.

Hess’s multi-consignor catalog sale on May 21 and 22 at Conestoga Auction Company. The highlights were from the Vera and Eugene Charles collection. The former Lancaster, Pa., dealer/collectors were known for ceramics, spatterware china, in particular. Some wondered why a singleowner sale was not done for the couple’s collection. Hess sold a number of things for them at a multi-consignor sale in the fall. There is still a chance for a stand-alone sale, as plenty of quality Pennsylvania country antiques from the Charleses remain. Vera passed away in 2017 at age 85. Eugene currently resides in a nursing home. The first of the two little redware dishes was eightsided, 5.5 inches wide, with yellow and green slip design along with manganese splotch

Sports card collecting has long been a popular collecting pursuit. It is one of the few multigenerational collecting categories that has stood the test of time despite numerous speculative bubbles, market crashes, and overall instability that would make even the most risk adverse stock market investor take cover in bonds. In its infancy, sports cards, mainly baseball cards, were marketed to kids as a simple and inexpensive collectible that could be traded or end up in the spokes of their bicycle wheels. Over time, when these items became coveted collectibles, manufacturers realized that they could profit from this trend, and in the 1980s and 1990s specifically, massive amounts of product were dumped on the open market. This led to the first great speculative bubble and subsequent crash in the early 1990s. Many collectors, speculators, and dealers were hurt when this transpired, and some thought this would be the end for sports card collecting as we knew it. This was not the case. Amazingly, as someone now in my 40s, when I look back at the collectibles market, there are certain markets that tend to move in both predictable and unpredictable market cycles. Numismatics is one of these categories. Right now the investment grade rare coin market is heating up again, and several new auction records were broken within the last year. I see this market getting even more overheated with the current

monetary policy of the Federal Reserve. Sports cards are quickly becoming another market that seems to go in cycles with some pretty amazing crashes in between. I have written about this phenomenon before. Target stores just recently announced that all modern era sports cards and “Pokemon” cards will no longer be sold in stores. To be fair, if you just glanced at headlines surrounding this announcement, I am sure some people assumed this was due to a lack of demand for these products, but that is not the case. The demand for newly stocked sports cards and “Pokemon” cards is so high that customers are lining up outside stores waiting to be able to clear out all the newly stocked trading cards and resell them online. This recently came to a head when several of these shoppers got violent, and, as a result, Target Stores made the decision to only allow the most in demand trading cards to be sold on their website as opposed to being stocked in stores. This all begs the question of how did we get here? While it is true that the pandemic really added a dose of gasoline to the proverbial spark that was already there, collectible trading cards started to rise a few years back due to the popularity of third-party grading. This was one of the primary drivers to the rare coin market back in the mid- to late 1980s, and third-party grading also is what propelled vintage comic books to new highs in the beginning of the 2000s. Now with the advent of top tier grading companies like PSA and BGS, sports (and other collectible) cards are having their day in the proverbial sun. When most collectors think of buying a graded collectible, or even getting a collectible graded, they usually associate it with vintage items, and this is usually a

savvy move. Modern-era mass-produced collectibles tend to be a horrible investment over the long term, and most of these types of collectibles are easily found in near mint condition or better, making the need for thirdparty grading almost moot. However, manufacturers are starting to learn from this, and now companies are using
mass-produced security to entice would-be collectors. Make no mistake, this concept is not new. If you remember watching any late night infomercials in the late 1990s and 2000s telling you that you need to act now because the latest mass-produced collectible item is being made in limited quantities, then you get the concept of mass-produced scarcity.

Unfortunately, a lot of collectors fall for this: the limitededition video game, the rare holo-foil “Magic: The Gathering” card, or even the limited-edition action figure. Now we have a whole trading card industry that figured out if you just limit certain cards or even create one-of-a-kind cards in blind packs, the sky is the limit. Remember when a pack of baseball cards cost only about 25 cents? Well, today we have packs of collectible trading cards that cost $100 a pack! Pull a one-of-a-kind refractor card from that pack that was autographed by a high-profile popular player, and guess what? If it gets graded, it can be seen selling for well over five figures on eBay or at auction, and the card may have been produced this same exact year! So much for attempting to invest longterm in a Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card. Now fortunes are won and lost minute by minute, pack by pack that is opened. Have your own YouTube Channel by chance? You can actually get literally tens of thousands of views (and substantial amounts of advertising revenue) just by hosting a high end pack opening yourself. Sadly, we are no longer in the 1980s anymore. Is it any surprise that collectible trading cards were not going to accelerate in popularity? Newly minted investors and lucky speculators are learning a valuable lesson here, but the most valuable lesson has yet to materialize. It’s the lesson that middle aged collectors know all too well: The trend is your friend, around the bend, until it ends. And make no

mistake my friends, this too shall end, and when it does it is going to be disastrous to some of these short sighted speculators and unsophisticated investors paying $40,000 for the latest and greatest modern era sports card simply because the manufacturer claims it is limited edition or one-of-a-kind. I think I would rather buy the Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle rookie card instead. More to come, because this story isn’t over it, it is just beginning.

But his top-seller was the extraordinary and oftdemanded engraved ceramic pitcher known as “Taureau,” or “The Bull.” This was executed in 1955, just nine years into Picasso’s pottery passion, which lasted the rest of his lifetime and, as his son, Claude, wrote, “established his importance in the development of 20th-century art pottery.” Befitting its rarity (it was one of 100 in a series) and significance, one collector took “The Bull” by the horns, paying $106,250. The breadth of this sale, whose offerings spanned decades, meant Picasso was joined by one of the 21st century’s brightest names and biggest stars, the man called KAWS. The former graffiti artist’s works have been in demand. The seven signed, numbered and dated screenprints from 2020’s “What Party?,” made for a career retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum, realized $81,250, This ceramic pitcher known as “Taureau,” or “The Bull,” was while the 10 signed, numbered executed in 1955, just nine years into Picasso’s pottery pas- and dated prints from the limsion, which lasted the rest of his lifetime. Of the seven Warhols in this event, top honors went to the purple-pink-and-blue “Turtle” made in 1985 to coincide with the release of Harold Pinter’s film “Turtle Diary,” realizing $62,500. Gustav, the artist spray-painted the so-called “Umbrella Girl” at the corner of Kerlerec and North Rampart streets in the Marigny neighborhood along the Mississippi River. She was emblematic of every New Orleanian who believed they would be protected by the levees when the hurricane came, not drowned by them. The year of her creation, Banksy created a small run of prints featuring the girl being drenched by white rain. Those 289 screenprints, along with smaller colored iterations, would in short order become among his most sought-after pieces, as evidenced by Thursday’s sale. In fact, this auction once again proved Banksy has never been more coveted among collectors. On Thursday, 2008’s “Very Little Helps” realized $93,750, followed closely by 2005’s “Jack and Jill (Police Kids),” which sold for $87,500. And in a sale that included some of Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup cans, Banksy’s 2005 signature iteration, “Soup Can (Violet/Orange/Mint),” brought $81,250. Finally, “Morons” from 2005, his brutal shot at the auction world, realized $50,000. Pablo Picasso was well represented in this event by

Heritage Auctions’ Prints and Multiples Signature Auction, held April 22, fetched $1.9 million. That nearly doubled the pre-auction estimate for the 81-lot event, due in large part to the overwhelming interest in works by Banksy, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, KAWS and David Hockney, among others. More than 500 bidders from around the globe participated in the auction, which was close to a complete sell-out. “This was a blockbuster event filled with a who’s-who of blue-chip artists,” says Taylor Curry, the New York-based consignment director in Heritage’s Modern and Contemporary Art category. “So it’s absolutely no surprise that we saw collectors respond accordingly.” Five works by Banksy landed in the event’s Top 10, including the auction’s top lot: a signed and numbered “NOLA (White Rain),” which realized $162,500, more than twice the pre-auction estimate. This 2008 work, featuring a seemingly confounded young girl holding an umbrella that brings the storm to her, is among the pseudonymous British hellraiser’s most famous and powerful works. Three years after Hurricane Katrina, and shortly before the arrival of Hurricane

Popular Novelist’s New Antique Collector Mystery Slated For Summer Release Crooked Lane To Release “The Art Of Betrayal” By Connie Berry and wild thyme dotting the meadows. Antiques dealer Kate Hamilton is spending the month of May in the Suffolk village of Long Barston, tending her friend Ivor Tweedy’s antiquities shop and enjoying time with Detective Inspector Tom Mallory. But while attending the May Fair, the annual pageant based on a famous Anglo-Saxon folktale, a body turns up in the middle of the festivities. Kate is even more shocked
when she learns the murder took place in Ivor Tweedy’s stockroom, and a valuable Chinese pottery jar she had taken on consignment has been stolen. Ivor may be ruined: insurance won’t cover a fraction of the loss. As Tom leads the investigation, Kate begins to see puzzling parallels between the murder and local legends. The more Kate learns, the more convinced she is the solution to both crimes lies in
the misty depths of AngloSaxon history and a generations-old pattern of betrayal. It’s up to Kate to unravel this Celtic knot of lies and deception to save Ivor’s business, and solve a murder. With its multi-layered plot, swoon-worthy Springtime-in-England setting, and captivating cast of characters, “The Art of Betrayal” is authentically irresistible. Brimming with charm, laced with suspense,

Memorializing The Rev. Henry Young Honoring A 19th-Century Fraktur Artist Of Central Pennsylvania By Karl Pass On May 23, as per his tradition, Leon “Jim” Smith of Millheim, Pa., planted a geranium at the grave of fraktur artist the Rev. Henry Young. Jim Pass of State College came along to document the event. The geranium is considered a Memorial Day flower. Smith, a retired auctioneer, sold a number of Henry Young’s fraktur in the 1970s and ’80s at local estate sales. Henry Christian Andrew Harmon Young (1792-1861) is buried in Old Union Cemetery in Millheim (Centre County). Today, we recognize him as a fraktur artist, but his recorded occupations were that of schoolmaster, farmer, and organist. Born in Saxony, and immigranted in 1817, he first settled in Union County and served as a schoolmaster in Mifflinburg. A prolific fraktur artist for over 40 years, he is considered a lay minister. No reference is known of him being ordained. Practicing portraiture and using German and English, Young produced a wide variety of fraktur styles. An eight pointed red and blue star with round yellow center is one trademark. There are over 400 surviving examples of his work known today.
This rare the Rev. Henry Young watercolor fraktur depicting a horse was discovered in an attic in Aaronsburg, Pa., in the 1980s. The annual flower planting tradition was spawned roughly 35 years ago and is always done by Smith on or near Memorial Day. “We held an on-site estate sale in Aaronsburg (about a mile from Millheim) sometime in the 1980s, and there were two Henry Young frakturs. At the end of the day, we were settling up the records and discovered a deficit of $20. We knew the person who owed it, and they later dropped off the money at our house. When we went to give this extra $20 to the executor of the estate, the woman said she didn’t want it, and she told us to just buy a flower for the grave of Henry Young, and that is how it all
started. I figured I’ve made enough money selling Young’s fraktur in my career it should be an annual tradition and have told myself as long as I live or am able to I will plant a flower on Memorial Day at his grave,” according to Smith. “One of my favorite pieces was a drawing of a horse along the top reading, ‘This horse is the property of Mr. Andrew Jackson Hosterman 1855.’ I was in the attic of a house in Aaronsburg, in the 1980s, it was a very hot summer day, I was pouring sweat, and the woman, who was quite poor, insisted there was nothing valuable up there, but I wanted to look through the boxes of old books, and I found the horse drawing in one of the books,” referred Smith. “Bill Koch bought it at the sale.” It was not included in either of
Leon “Jim” Smith has planted geraniums at the grave of the Rev. Henry Young around Memorial Day annually for about 35 years. Koch’s sales, the first being in 1992 through Horst, the second in 1999 through Pook & Pook. “Another item I will always remember was a sewing box we sold at an estate sale in Millheim in the 1970s. The buyer was Lester Zettle, who later sold it to Roy Buck,” said Smith.
