Crocker Farm To Sell Unique Piece Of Anna Pottery Unusual Jug Advertised The 1884 Union County Fair In Illinois FRIDAY JUNE 22, 2018 • VOL. 49, NO. 25
The Lititz Antiques Show: Aging Gracefully Quality Show To Take Place At Warwick Middle School On June 29 And 30 The sweet smell of tradition wafts over hay fields and corn fields in Lititz, Pa., as the Lititz Historical Foundation prepares for its 56th annual Lititz Antiques Show. This perennial favorite will be held Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30, at Warwick Middle School, 104 Maple St. in Lititz, Pa. Established in 1964, the event remains an annual fundraiser for the Johannes Mueller House (1792), former residence to an early Moravian colonist whose communal duties included tanning and textile dying. Promoted as an “old time country show of primarily primitives,” the show will feature nearly 50 dealers presenting a wide range of interesting, reasonably priced
country wares and dry goods. Shoppers can expect to find an array of quality country items, stoneware and redware, kitchen Continued on page 4
A rare and large-sized stoneware fair jug with profuse incised inscriptions will be among many expected highlights at Crocker Farm’s next Stoneware and Redware Auction, scheduled for Saturday, July 21. Crocker Farm Inc. is located in Sparks, Md. It is inscribed “Union County Agricultural Board / Twentyninth Annual Fair / Held at / Jonesboro Illinois. / on / Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday And. Friday. September 16-19th 1884,” and signed “C. & W. Kirkpatrick Established Anna Pottery 1859,” for Cornwall and Wallace Kirkpatrick, of Anna, Ill. Serving essentially as a utiltarian stoneware “time capsule” of Union County, Ill., life in the year 1884, this painstakingly-decorated jug commemorates the 29th Annual Union County, Illinois Fair, held that year in Jonesboro, Ill. Among the numerous inscriptions related to the fair, local
businesses, and culture are the following: a list of various categories of subjects judged at the fair, along with their committee members, including “Class A. Horses, Class B. Mule, Jacks and Jennets, Class C. Cattle, Class D. Hogs, Class G. Grains, Class E. Sheep and Goats, Class F. Poultry, Class H. Farm Products, Class I. Fruits, Class J. M e c h a n i c a l Manufactures, Class K. Ladies Department, Class L. Fancy Articles, Class M. Paintings, Curiosities, Minerals & C, Class N. Preservers Etc., Class O. Miscellaneous, and Class P. Ladies Equestrians.” “Amusements” at the fair listed “Human Race,” “Ox Race,” and “Bull Race,” and there are also lists of officers of the fair, churches in Jonesboro, and various advertisements for Union County businesses, including the newspaper “The Talk.”

This jug typifies the Kirkpatricks’ style of obsessively blanketing the surface of their pots with decoration, whether it be applied snakes on a temperance jug, or incised inscriptions, as seen on this stately fair jug. As with all of the Kirkpatricks’ best pieces, time is of little concern to the potter in producing this object. Impressing upon the viewer of the work, however, was of the utmost importance. This jug was presumably displayed at the 1884 Union County, Illinois, Fair, where hundreds of onlookers could marvel at the Kirkpatrick Brothers’ talents. Interestingly, it documents Cornwall Kirkpatrick’s involvement in the proceedings of the fair itself, listing him as a superintendent of “Class M. Paintings. Curiosities. Minerals. & C.” A monumental work, which seamlessly combines utility, art, and history, the nearly 20-inch-high jug is one of the most visually-striking Anna Pottery products to come to auction in years. Thursdays tors could do much worse in ‘til 8 pm today’s fickle toy aisle. The 1980s are back, sort of!
Collector Anecdotes And Antics By Shawn Surmick Toy collecting isn’t what it used to be. This is a popular lament echoed by countless toy enthusiasts of any age. Toys of the 1980s and ’90s eras had a certain feel to them that just can’t be matched by today’s offerings. Back then there was no way to order a factory-sealed case of your favorite toy with a few clicks of a mouse and a credit card at 2 a.m. while wearing your favorite “Star Wars pajamas. Today’s collectors have it so much easier than preinternet generations did. But I digress. Sadly, the relative ease of being able to buy a factorysealed case of your favorite toy offering pales in comparison to the quality and demand of most modern toys being produced today. Most modern era toys are cheaply produced and packaged, destined to only see store shelves for a period of a few months before gleefully being discounted and sold at a fraction of their original retail price. However, every now and then something magical happens that captures the feeling of being 11 years old and discovering a new classic toy or franchise. Every now and then a company gets it just right, and the curiosity and discovery of being a child returns to
adult toy collectors and enthusiasts alike. Because this happens so infrequently in regard to modern-era toys I am always happy to write about if and when it does. I also encourage all collectors and enthusiasts to search out these toys as well. Companies who make this kind of magic happen should be rewarded for their efforts. Voltron originally came to the United States courtesy of World Events Productions in 1984. It was based on two separate and unique Japanese animated series. The plot centers around five young pilots who each command a robot lion of a different color. These five robotic lions can then be forged together to produce the mega fighting force known as Voltron. This force, known as Voltron Force, has been placed in charge of protecting Planet Arus and its people from King Zarkon and his minions. The series launched with a subsequent and extremely sought-after toy line produced by Matchbox and later Panosh Place. Today, these toys go for a substantial amount on the secondary market depending on their condition and are well worth seeking out. Voltron was an almost immediate hit the moment it aired in the United States. The fact that it was based on Japanese animation and had a very unique futuristic feel as
opposed to American-based toy lines gave it a market all its own. Sadly, much like most of the toy lines of the 1980s, its longevity matched those of its audience’s attention spans, and most kids tired of the franchise after just a few short years. The series would see new animated material being made almost every few years, but it failed to recapture the imagination of the original. By 2010, the line was considered a classic, with several short-lived reboots airing in select markets and direct to DVD releases available for fans to seek out. In 2011, Mattel Toys surprised fans by offering a very limited release on several classic toys and action figures based on the original series. They were available only for a short time frame and remain somewhat sought after today, but do not have the same demand as the classic 1984 releases by Matchbox or Panosh Place. With no further new releases of toys to keep collectors engaged, Voltron was destined for a slow death, but fate would intervene. Thanks in part to an incredible marketing strategy put in place by Netflix that allowed the company to source exclusive online streaming content for its network of subscribers, the company surprisingly announced that they acquired the rights to do a high-budget animated series based on
Voltron. Dreamworks Animated was heading the new series, and it would launch in 2016. Fans of the original series were stunned. Would it live up to the hype of the 1984 originals? On June 10, 2016, the first season of “Voltron: Legendary Defender premiered on Netfilx with much anticipation and was an immediate success. A second season launched in 2017, and much like almost every successful animated series, a toy line created and produced by Playmates Toys was available on store shelves. This was the first true toy line since Mattel’s reworking of the incredible “Masters of the Universe brand that caught my attention. Playmates did an excellent job in bringing the “Voltron: Legendary Defender universe to life and even went back and released a dedicated toy line on the vintage series. The new toy line is available at most major retailers, with Target carrying a lot of new figures prominently in their stores. Both standard plastic and diecast offerings are available, with several series planned based off the new “Legendary Defender series and the classic “Voltron series of yesteryear. The toys, while somewhat overpriced, start at $17.99 for the larger assortment and go up to $39.99 depending on what is being purchased. Thanks to the success of

1951-53, by Isaac Asimov. Together, the three signed first editions achieved an auction record of $9,750. Also by Asimov, a signed first edition of “I, Robot, 1950, reached $6,250, above a high estimate of $3,500. Important editions of Ray Bradbury’s magnum opus “Fahrenheit 451, 1953, were led by the limited author’s edition personally inscribed to Simon ($7,500). The popular asbestos-bound edition reached $5,200. All six editions offered were purchased. Further highlights from the auction included the first edition of Ernest Hemingway’s first work, “Three Stories and Ten Poems, 1923, which sold to a collector for $23,750. The first editions of Emily Dickinson’s first three books of “Poems, 1890-96, reached $13,750. “Sci-fi has always had a multi-generational appeal; pop culture’s appetite for literary-based films of this genre continues unabated, noted specialist John D. Larson. “Material from both the 19th and 20th centuries performed equally well, with a robust 86percent overall sell-through rate. Images courtesy of Swann Auction Galleries.

Lot 5, a very rare Citroen delivery wagon emblazoned “Au Louvre,” suggesting it was a depiction of a Louvre Museum vehicle, came to the auction block with a $2,000-$3,000 estimate. It was off to the races from the very beginning and didn’t apply the brakes till it had reached $48,000. Chatter during the preview suggested it was likely a prototype. All prices quoted include a 20 percent buyer’s premium. “There was so much enthusiasm going into the sale with all the different categories we were offering,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. “In particular, there was a lot of buzz about the European toys, especially the French Martin toys. The Archaeology Of An 18th-Century Pottery In Lancaster, Pa. By Justin W. Thomas
Chestnut streets in downtown Lancaster, based on an archaeological survey conducted in 2008.” “As part of the Queen Street Station construction, an archaeological excavation was completed at the site, which focused on four key areas previously identified. 1) a privy/refuse pit possibly related to the Jacob Bitner family, 2) the remains of an 18th century red earthenware potter’s kiln and waste pile, 3) a stone lined well, and 4) a brick passenger tunnel related to a mid-19th century train depot complex.” Archaeologists did identify the remains of the potter’s kiln although cannot say with certainty who the potter was. It may have belonged to Jacob Marx (1750-1828), a German potter from Charlestown, Md., who operated his pottery in Lancaster during the years This is a view of the 18th-century kiln 1781-92. The remains of a cobaltdecorated stoneware jar with twisted handles was also recovered. The production of red earthenware and stoneware in Lancaster, Pa., is likely most known today for the wares produced by the Gast family, especially those made by Henry Gast (1806-89) and his son, Henry Gast, Jr. (18361924), during the circa 1825-90 period, as well as another pottery operated by the Swope family in the 19th century. However, a fairly recent archaeological dig by AECOM (formerly URS Corporation) of Burlington, N.J., has proven there was also a significant and practically unknown pottery established in Lancaster that produced Moravian-style red earthenware as early as the 1780s. According to the Red Rose Transit Authority in Lancaster County, “In August and September 2009, RRTA broke ground on Queen Street Station Phase III, located on the corner of Queen and

number of Pennsylvania’s potters in the 1800s. It is possible that Marx or one of Lancaster’s other reported late-18th or early-19th century potters may have been the manufacturer, although no further proof of a stoneware kiln or kiln evidence, such as stoneware kiln furniture, was found. This archaeological evidence has resulted in an exciting discovery for a type of red earthenware production not previously associated with 18th century Lancaster and proof that a style of production is not always limited to a specific potter, business or location. Lancaster may not be a community widely known for its elaborate slipware and tulipware production; however, the city clearly employed at least one capable and accomplished potter in the 1700s with the ability to produce a style of decoration that has become synonymous with the 18th- and 19th-century decorative arts of Pennsylvania.
These unglazed slip-decorated red earthenware sherds are of a similar style of production that were recovered from the site of the 19th century Valentine Conrad Pottery in Jefferstown, Ky., and at the circa 1815-24 Christopher Weber Pottery in New Harmony, Ind.

smaller, $5,700. A Kilgore roadster more than doubled expectations at $6,600. Approximately 120 lots of European and American trains rolled across the auction block. Most settled within estimate, with the most active bidding on Lionel productions. Prices realized included a boxed 9U Kit, $6,000; Red Top Flying Yankee, $4,500; a 700E model, $4,200. A boxed Bing New York Central chugged to $5,100, and a Marklin Adler passenger set followed closely behind at $4,800. An American-made Boucher freight set concluded its run at $3,300. The Saturday session welcomed representations of every major holiday, starting with Christmas. The gallery’s gleaming showcases reflected the Christmas spirit bountifully with its many Santa figures, Santas in reindeer-drawn sleighs, and large clockwork nodding Santas. A seldom-seen German candy container depicting a fur-bearded Santa in a light blue fur robe, grasping a candleholder feather tree, sold for an above-estimate $4,800. Another estimate-defying candy container was the red-robed Father Christmas holding a feather-tree sprig, which doubled its high estimate at $2,280. At every Bertoia’s holiday session there are turkey lovers. Of the selection offered on day two, the top seller was a large German turkey-form candy container that sold for $2,700 against an estimate of $400$600. Rare Halloween items

included a Halloween lantern candy container, $2,700 against a $500-$700 estimate, and a metal parade torch lantern that lit up at $1,920. Part one of the Palmer Cox Brownies grouping from longtime collectors Ed and Nan Wagoner featured two Brownie Egg figures that tripled estimate at $2,200 and a Keystone Cop lantern, which made an above-estimate $2,040. The second half of the Wagoners’ whimsical collection will be sold in Bertoia’s November sale. A small grouping of teddy bears and dolls included several choice lots, such as a 20-inch Steiff rod bear in the rare apricot color, which finished at $10,800, and a six-inch Bru Bebe that was purchased for $19,200, nearly twice its high estimate. The lineup of figural cast-iron doorstops was led by a rare Hubley 13-inch giraffe. Entered with a $3,000-$4,000 estimate, it realized $14,400. Jeanne Bertoia, an expert on doorstops, explained the outstanding price with the succinct comment, “Quality sells.” To contact Bertoia Auctions, call 856-692-1881 or email toys@bertoiaauctions.com.
