The Jim And Nan Tshudy Estate Sale Regional Collection Of Textiles, Ephrata Imprints Do Well: Cabin Fever For Mennonite Arts By Karl Pass I first met Jim Tshudy in 2010. The two of us were on a committee putting together a retrospective exhibit and catalog on the life of antiques dealer and folk painter Hattie Brunner at the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley in Ephrata, Pa. He looked familiar, and I’m sure I had seem him at various sales or at the markets. We had fun, and for opening night of the exhibit made sure not to offer any wine or champagne, given Brunner (1889-1982) was a teetotaler and wouldn’t have approved. Jim and Nan of Ephrata were fixtures at nearby Black Angus during a time when you could attend a farm sale or multiple ones on any Saturday, buy at least something, and sell it the next day at the markets. That era is long over. After giving up their booth, Jim enjoyed selling on eBay and still attended the occasional public sale. The couple were regional collectors and over the decades put together a nice, honest group of material. The strengths were Ephrata imprints and Pennsylvania German textiles. The Tshudys bought the 18th-century Mohler homestead in 1971, a beautiful stone farmhouse, and given the proximity to Horst, were longtime fixtures at sales. (Horst held an on-site sale selling contents of the Tshudy barn on June 27). Originally scheduled for March 20 and 21, the catalog sale

Framed 23.25-by-20 inches, the full-sheet fraktur depicting two facing parrots is believed to have been done nearby, ca. 1795-1815, in the Groffdale Church area (northern Lancaster County). By an unknown maker, it is attributed to a yet-to-be identified North Central Lancaster County artist, likely Mennonite, likely a presentation piece, possibly for a wedding. The Tshudys bought it at a public sale in Smoketown in 1986. It sold for $6,400. Some of the areas of black (iron gall ink) on tails and beaks ate away the paper over time, and it was professionally restored.

By Brenda Hoffman Next month, Interstate 81 Antiques in Shippensburg, Pa., will celebrate its second-year anniversary. Below, owner Brenda Hoffman reflects on business and some merchandise of note. Amazing, would be the most appropriate word to describe these past two years, Hoffman starts. I often say we are trying to improve what we do daily and should always keep learning and growing both on a personal and professional level as well. Not a day goes by that we can’t learn something from someone. In fact, If we take the time to listen to our customers, we can serve them much better.

The perfect grade is important, of course, but the sheer rarity of the card is the main reason why it is an inarguable must-have for serious Pokémon collectors.” The card reads, “The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament’s champion is recognized here, and this honor is praised. Moyer carved in his basement and gave his work to family and friends. Moyer belonged to Swamp Church outside of Reinholds and is buried in the church’s cemetery. Dick Machmer did his part in popularizing his work by including Moyer in the book “Just For Nice” published in 1991. Many of the birds are dated between 1944-54. Among the first time the work

Collector Anecdotes And Antics Discussing The Results Of The Nintendo Playstation Prototype System Auction

On March 6, the infamous Nintendo Playstation prototype system crossed the auction block at Heritage Auctions. The system ended up selling for $360,000 including the 20-percent buyer’s premium that Heritage charges. This was well below the original $1 million plus offer the original consigner received before deciding to go the auction route. As a result of the sale, the video game collecting community appears to be divided. After all, this was a heavily advertised and promoted sale, and a lot of collectors in the video game collecting community were either ecstatic at the price received or disappointed because they thought this was going to be the first seven-figure video game collectible. I wanted to give my thoughts on the final value price and why this was never going to be a million-dollar item and what it means for the market now. I have written before about the historic status of the Nintendo Playstation prototype system. The item was created out of a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony in an effort to create a CDROM attachment to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in the early 1990s. Unfortunately for Nintendo, Sony caught light of the fact that Nintendo was also cutting a deal with their closest competitor, Philips, and pulled out of the deal. This left Nintendo stunned, and they never did create a

told me that most likely this item would not get anywhere near the coveted seven-figure mark at auction. Compounding problems for the outcome of this item was the fact that roughly two weeks before this item was supposed to end, bidding activity popped it up to $420,000 with the 20-percent buyer’s premium included. It was later discovered that perhaps some of those bids were suspect, and Heritage Auctions did the right thing and cancelled those bids. A lot of video game collectors who are not versed in the aspect of auctions or have had any relevant experience in the greater antiques and collectibles trade overall were left stunned. Commentary on video game collecting forums showed that a lot of collectors felt the auction was a bust. After all, the original consigner publically stated that he had a million dollar plus offer and decided to test his luck by taking an item like this to auction instead. His inability to understand the market for an item like this cost him well over $540,000. Other video game collectors who were monitoring the auction were very pleased with the results. I had more than one collector reach out to me and tell me that had this item sold for under $100,000, then it would be a true disappointment. Personally, I think video game collectors are too concerned with discovering the first seven-figure video game collectible at present time. It almost seems like a lot of

collectors and enthusiasts in this collecting category are doing everything they can to legitimatize the market for these items while completely ignoring the fact that the market is already at record highs. I strongly urge collectors who are paying substantial premiums to acquire vintage video games at present time to take a wait and see attitude. I consistently review completed and sold items from Heritage Auctions that deal with WATA graded factory sealed video games. WATA came on the scene just a few years ago and is already the leading thirdparty grading company of vintage video games. By comparing the market of vintage video games to that of comic books and coins, you can see that people have been collecting coins and comic books much longer than that of video games. It should also be noted that both comic books and coins have had their fair share of 15TH ANNUAL LEHIGH VALLEY I.A.C.A.N.E.

INDIAN RELIC SHOW

and games to cross the auction block in the coming years. The winning bidder of the Nintendo Playstation prototype system has already come forward and stated he will be putting it in a video game museum he is designing. I’ll save my thoughts on egocentric collectors who wish to create their own personal museums for an upcoming article. Until that time, just recognize that video game collecting is here to stay, but the prices currently being paid for a lot of these items is not sustainable for the long term. Both coin and comic book speculators can attest to this fact.

massive speculative bubbles throughout the past several decades. When coin grading appeared in the 1980s, it ushered in a new gold rush (pun intended) for high-grade classic coins. When CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) started grading comic books in the early 2000s, the market for vintage comic books caught fire. What most starry eyed speculators fail to realize is that when respectable thirdparty grading is first introduced to any collecting category, it is generally the worst time one can start speculating in that market because the market is still struggling to stabilize and find its equilibrium. In conclusion, however you view the results of the Nintendo Playstation prototype auction, collectors need to learn that this auction means very little in the grand scheme of things. Expect other prototype video game systems

CD-ROM device for their coveted Super Nintendo Entertainment System. That didn’t stop Sony from going on to create the Sony Playstation line of systems in 1995. To this day, Sony is one of Nintendo’s fiercest competitors and has even been more prominent in the world of home video gaming than that of Microsoft, makers of the Xbox series of home video game systems. If there ever was a company who wished the history of the Nintendo Playstation could be rewritten, it is definitely Nintendo. The world of vintage video game collecting for Nintendo and later systems is in a state of mass speculation and confusion at present time. We now have companies who grade and encapsulate video games much like they grade and encapsulate coins and comic books. Thanks in part to the fact that some of these companies are quietly working behind the scenes to manipulate the market for some of these pixilated treasures, vintage video games are incorrectly being seen as financial investments rather than collectibles. Prices are soaring as uneducated speculators enter the market en masse. When the Nintendo Playstation prototype system was discovered, it is and was believed that this was the only prototype of this system in current form. One-of-a-kind items with no track history of being sold either privately or publicly are extremely hard to appraise and evaluate. I have spoken to many other wellversed antique and collectible enthusiasts, and they have all

Don loves oil lamps. I hope I speak for other such businesses when I say we meet the most wonderful people every day. Meeting new people and sharing interests is how I met Don and Linda. As frequent shoppers to our store, we became friends, and when they asked for help to sell their collections, I was happy to assist. A collection of Amberina “Moon and Stars pattern glassware was something they enjoyed displaying in their Newville, Pa., home over the years. It was a hobby the two equally shared and enjoyed together. I loved hearing the stories of how and where items were found. It all began with Linda saving S&H Green Stamps. No one enjoyed the licking of the stamps into books, but the benefits of saving these stamps in order to make purchases at an S&H Green Stamp Store was a popular thing. Linda started by shopping for Christmas or birthday gifts and also picking out a piece of glassware with the leftover stamps. Thus, the Amberina collection began and grew well over 40 years. S&H Green Stamps were a line of trading stamps popular from the 1930s all the way until the late 1980s. They were distributed as part of a rewards program operated by the Sperry & Hutchinson company, founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson. During the 1960s, the company promoted its rewards catalog as being the largest publication in the country and boasted that it issued three times as many stamps as the Postal Service. Customers would receive stamps at the checkout counter of supermarkets, department stores, gasoline stations, and other retailers that could be redeemed for products in the catalog or Green Stamp Stores. The “Moon and Star design was originally known as “The Palace, which was

produced from 1894 to 1905, first by the Adams Glass Company of Pittsburgh, and later by the United States Glass Company that acquired the old Pittsburgh firm. The distinct pattern was made in many electric colors, but a host of companies produced this kind of pattern glass. A few include L.G. Wright, ca. 1930s-60s (Fenton Glass Company for L.G. Wright); L.E. Smith Glass Company, ca. 1940s-2004; Weishar Enterprises or Island Mold, current producer, and also the Kemple Glass Company is credited with the “Moon and Star Pattern among variations. The collection being sold at Interstate 81 Antiques primarily dates to the 1940s. If interested in vintage glassware collecting, it is a worthwhile visit. The shop is very service oriented and seeks to serve customers and cultivate new shoppers. Interstate 81 Antiques is located at 15 Hershey Road in Shippensburg, Pa. (Exit 29 of Route 81). Shop hours are Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is an outdoor flea market every Saturday. To learn more, call 717300-3746.

Sale Brings $744,112 Along With 13 Auction Records Swann Galleries’ May 7 sale of Printed and Manuscript African Americana was held live online and was conducted remotely. “This was a strong auction regardless of the circumstances. The sale concluded with 90 percent of lots finding buyers, a record in this category at Swann, and a total of $744,112, well above high estimate. Institutions generally make a good showing in these African Americana auctions, but they did exceptionally well in this sale, picking up the top four lots, and a total of 11 of the top 20, noted Rick Stattler, the house’s Americana specialist. Leading the sale was an annotated 1848 letterpress broadside advertising for a reward for three young women who had escaped from slavery. The announcement was won by an institution for $37,500, a record for a broadside of the same nature. Also from the slavery and abolition era came the only pamphlet edition of “The Proclamation of Emancipation, seventh printed edition, 1862, which sold for $11,875. Posters were one of the most popular categories in the sale. Civil Rights-era posters included “March for Freedom Now!, 1960, printed for a protest at the 1960 Republican Convention, which brought $17,500; “Come Let Us Build a New World Together, ca. 1963, utilizing a photograph by Danny Lyon featuring congressman John Lewis, then a 22-year-old Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee organizer, was won for $7,250, a record for the poster; and “I Am a Man, Memphis, 1968, a dorm room version of the original protest

O t h e r American blown glass in the sale included a pattern-molded Checkered Diamond pocket flask in light aquamarine standing 6.75 inches high and of approximately one-pint an capacity. It was of chestnut form and molded with five rows of eight large diamonds, each divided into four small diamonds. GV-14 by George and Helen McKearin. The ca. 1830 beauty featured applied solid handle and was most likely made at the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. in Sandwich, Mass. From the Holt/Saunders collection, the 4.5-inchhigh jug was in mint condition and sold for $7,605. All prices include the firm’s 17percent buyer’s premium. It went to a New England private collector. “This jug was the first thing that Harry Saunders ever purchased from us. Beverley (Evans) found it hiding in a Staunton, Va., estate back in the 1990s. It was the only old thing in the house, and Harry paid $4,000 at the auction. I think it brought more than

The pressed Loop/Leaf vase of rare size and color, lot 1491, went for $5,850.

The catalogue entry for this lot included an interesting note: “While amethyst and colorless examples of this flask attributed to the New Bremen Glass manufactory of John Frederick Amelung, Frederick Co., Maryland, are illustrated in many standard reference volumes, we could locate no published examples in this color. Amethyst and colorless fragments of the pattern were found at the Amelung factory site during archaeological excavations in 1962 and 1963 by The Corning Museum of Glass and the Smithsonian Institution. The McKearins and Ken Wilson note that when the Amelung works closed in 1795, some of the workers went West to help establish the New Geneva Glass Works and are known to have taken molds with them, probably including the mold for this pattern.” This pattern-molded Checkered Pressed glass was well Diamond flask, lot 1355, sold for represented in this auction, $4,680. including the always popular

in large herds,” stated Rich Penn. The coin auction will be one session on day one of the four-day Rich Penn Auction event to be held on July 23 to 26. The coins will sell on Thursday afternoon, July 23. “The collection had a couple boxes full of coin books, including many early Meghrig green books. Nickles, dimes, quarters, halves and dollars, with many full or near full. My favorite was not a Meghrig but a “Library of Coins” Vol.14. It was nearly full of 1916-30 Standing Liberty Quarters. As soon as I opened it, the lustre on the coins was jaw dropping. There are about 30 books of great coins, but there are thousands of loose coins that had never been examined and sorted. That’s where the three-legged buffaloes came from, along with several double date strikes. This auction has to be one of the largest collection of coins sold in my recent memory. There certainly should be something for every coin collector,” added A small selection of the 13,000 coins selling Thursday, July 23, at Rich Penn Penn. The auction includes all Auctions.

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates spring auction of 18th- and 19th-century glass and lighting was held on May 19 and 20 at the firm’s Mt. Crawford, Va., gallery. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the sale was conducted with remote bidding only, in the same manner as the firm’s March and April auctions. Company president and senior auctioneer Jeffrey S. Evans noted, “We offered five different ways to bid in this auction, and competition was intense across all platforms. Prices overall were some of the strongest we have seen in many years. In some instances, results were at or above pre-recession levels.” The auction featured part one of the collection of the late Alexander Hierholzer (Holt) and Harry Saunders, Philadelphia; the Duane Sand collection, Eureka Springs, Ark.; the cup plate collection of the late Dolores J. Bowler, Ayer, Mass.; the collection of Lynne and the late Philip Blaker, Austin, Texas; and property of the Russell and Doris Evitt estate collection, Jackson, Calif. The sale consisted of a wide variety of blown and pressed glass of all types produced in the United States, Great Britain, and throughout

ding. Proving the old adage “bigger is better” is not always true, a brilliant medium green diminutive vase in the Loop/Leaf pattern was the top seller in this category. Standing only a little over 9 inches high, it is the small version of the more commonly seen 11.5-inch size. The vase was in mint condition, and after a fierce battle between a phone bidder and an internet bidder, it sold online for $5,850. The demand for lighting devices from the whale oil, fluid, and early kerosene periods remains very strong, and this auction included many fine examples. Burning brightest here was a Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. early kerosene Onion pattern stand lamp in a stunning deep translucent lavender color. This example was the smallest of three sizes produced around 1870, standing only 12 inches high. Top lot in this category was a New England Glass Co. Caryatid figural-stem example in a possibly unique deep sapphire blue with strong opal marbling. Standing 9.75 high, the candlestick was produced for a very short period of time based on an 1870 design patent granted to Henry Whitney, an employee of the New England Glass Co. Also from the Holt/Saunders collection, it had been purchased at the auction of the Dot and Ted Anthony collection conducted by Jeff Evans in 2010. This time around it sold for $7,020.
