A Series Of Plates And Flowerpots Made By Absalom Bixler In Lancaster County, Pa. Rare Pennsylvania German Redware In New England Museum By Justin W. Thomas The Beauport, Sleeper-MCann House is somewhat of a hidden gem in Gloucester, Mass., which displays two pieces of 19th-century red earthenware that I have always admired, made by Absalom Bixler (1802-84) in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pa. According to Historic New England, “Beauport, the extraordinary creation of Henry Davis Sleeper (1878-1934), was built between 1907 and 1934 on Eastern Point in Gloucester, Mass. Its origins began conventionally enough as a Queen Anne cottage overlooking the harbor. A comfortable summer retreat for Sleeper, a well-to-do young bachelor from Boston, and his widowed mother. But scarcely had the house been finished when Sleeper began to lay plans for expanding it. Over the next 27 years he continually added rooms, each displayed with spectacular displays of objects. At the time of his death, he had run out of land on which to build, and Beauport had become a 40-room mansion labyrinth. “From hallway to dining room, from bedroom to alcove, every room at Beauport is decorated to express a theme. Sometimes the theme was historical, sometimes literary.” After sleeper’s death in 1934, Beauport was put up for sale.

SPNEA’s director, William Sumner Appleton (1874-1947), hoped to acquire the house and its contents for SPNEA (Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities). Before this could transpire, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E.F. McCann, who had first seen Beauport while on a yachting trip and had fallen in love with it, purchased the house and the grounds intact. The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) is a nonprofit historic preservation organization founded in 1910, which today is Historic New England. In 1937, Mrs. McCann approached SPNEA with the idea of bequeathing the house to the society, but unfortunately, she was taken ill and died before plans could be worked out. Five years later, however, after the death of their father, the three McCann children, carried out their late parents’ wishes and donated the house and its contents to SPNEA. The objects made by Bixler that are owned by Historic New England include a dish that is stamped, “ABSALOM BIXLER / TO HIS WIFE SARAH / 1824,” as well as a flowerpot that is also stamped, “ABSALOM BIXLER / TO HIS WIFE SARAH / 1824.” Cynthia G. Winterthur Portfolio, titled, “Celebrating Years Together: Personal Commemorations and the Colonial Revival.” “During the second-half of the nineteenth century, Absalom Bixler presented a series of redware plates and flowerpots to his wife, Sarah. An impressed inscription on each marked it as a gift from husband to wife and included the date 1824, although Absalom and Sarah were not married until 1827. The plates and pots were commemorative, marking the longevity of their bond. They were produced during a period when it was increasingly common in the

United States to reflect on earlier times by memorializing patriotic events and celebrating handcraftsmanship.... Over the years the plates and flowerpots were acquired by collectors of Americana and eventually found their way into museum collections.” These types of wares can be found in Winterthur in Delaware, which likely possesses the largest collection of Bixler’s flowerpots and plates. Examples are also at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Interestingly, one of the best and largest flowerpots made by Continued on page 2

Bixler was just consigned by an estate in Orange County, Calif., to Crocker Farm’s Spring 2022 auction. The flowerpot was stamped “READY FOR A CATCH,” and was adorned with an applied black cat sneaking up on a bird perched on a branch. The flowerpot stands an impressive 10.25 inches tall and measures 10.25 inches in diameter. A nearly identical flowerpot is owned by Winterthur, although the cat’s fur has stripes like a tiger. Another example (with striped cat) is in a private Philadelphia collection. The flowerpot sold by Crocker Farm was also illustrated on the cover of the September 1982 issue of “The Magazine Antiques,”

The September 1982 issue of “The Magazine Antiques.” and previously sold at Sotheby’s in New York City. Crocker Farm sold it for $78,000 on April 9, 2022. It is quite rare for any of the flowerpots made by Bixler to come up for sale,

But these objects also display a deep personal connection, showcasing the actual relationship and marriage between Absalom and Sarah. Outside of some marriage forms in existence today, there are very few pieces of American utilitarian pottery that represent such a personal and loving relationship as do these objects.

A significant portion of the remaining collection will be donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “It’s a crime that much of this collection has been

stored away, where others who love film history were unable to enjoy it,” said Manley. “Movie posters weren’t created to be kept. to converse with other collectors at all. They just need to pay attention to what the grading companies and high profile auction companies are promoting at present time. Because at the end of the day, no one individual can manipulate these markets like companies that directly profit from them. This is one of the many reasons why speculating in a lot of these markets is inherently risky. Collectors no longer dictate what is hot in the collectibles trade. They just think they do. That is the end of my rant for today. Until next time.

Auction Featuring Hundreds Of Cinema’s Most Stunning Silent Movie Posters Set To Roar Dwight Manley likes to collect originals, things that were among the first made, and items that are unique. any kind of third-party graded collectible can be easily manipulated, and you realize that a lot of these starryeyed speculators coming into the trade with dollar signs dancing in their heads are going to be hurt financially. It is only a matter of time. I have written intensely about a lot of highly speculative collectibles that may not stand the test of time. Even as I write this, watching “Antiques Roadshow,” I can assure you that grading companies and auction houses are busy looking for the next big thing in the collectibles trade. And when they discover it, like they always do, it will be marketed using terms like alternative asset, investment grade, historic, scarce, and near mint. This is why I routinely advise collectors that if they want to know what the next big collecting category is going to be, they don’t need

and also at that particular time, very few people were attempting to collect comic books. Fast forward several decades later, and Batman’s popularity was still soaring, and as a result the first issue of his stand-alone comic series (along with that copy of Detective Comics #27) are now selling for millions of dollars. It is easy to see why, but there are no guarantees that this trend will continue. Now let’s compare that to an up-and-coming collectible like factory-sealed video games. It is hard to believe that a factory-sealed and graded copy of Super Mario 64 in 9.8 condition once hit a record price of $1.5 million just this past year. Unfortunately, just a few months later another copy of that same game in the same grade sold for about half that amount. How did this occur? Well, Super Mario 64 was a video game produced for the Nintendo 64 video game system that debuted in 1996. Adding to the speculative nature of this item is that video game grading and collecting just became a thing in the past few years, unlike comic book collecting that has been growing strong since the 1960s. It is easy for a novice collector driven by their emotions to compare Super Mario to Batman and reason they are both sought after pieces of pop culture memorabilia. This is not an incorrect notion; however, the markets for graded video games and for graded comic books are very different. It is this dichotomy that few speculators understand. Add in the fact that the market for

There are several books that I encourage everyone to read, and there are many others that I encourage everyone to read several times throughout their lives. One of my favorite books of all time is the literary classic “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In chapter two, the narrator of the story, Nick Carraway, heads to a party in New York City where he encounters obnoxiously wealthy partygoers living carefree lifestyles. This causes Nick to feel excited but also uncomfortable, comparing his own self-worth to this unrealistic idealized standard. It is in this exact moment that Nick gleefully declares, “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” If ever there was a quote perfect enough to define the antiques and collectibles trade in 2022, this would be it. Numerous changes have gotten us to this point in the marketplace. We have discussed some of these before in great detail: the adoption of

forum right now, and a vast amount of speculators think they are geniuses simply because the price of their holdings has increased due to what appears to be increased demand. While it is true that the deluge of speculators coming into the collectibles market these past few years have been nothing short of remarkable, make no mistake, most of these individuals are on a collision course that will be met with disaster once these markets suffer any kind of correction. Most of these speculators being hurt by market manipulation are woefully unaware as to the amount of speculation their beloved collectibles’ value is based on. I have repeated this mantra several times, and it bears repeating again. Antiques and collectibles do not produce anything tangible. These are purely speculative assets that have no monetary income streams or underlying fundamentals. Just because your favorite auction site sold a copy of Batman #1 for a record price does not mean that the price of that particular collectible will always be worth that amount. You need to look at what is occurring in the overall marketplace that justifies why that particular item sold for that price at present time. For anyone reading this and asking that question, let me help answer it for you. Batman premiered in Detective Comics #27 published by DC Comics in May of 1939. Back in 1939, no one could have predicted the future popularity of Batman,

e-commerce and online auction sites, the acceptance of third-party grading, real time online pricing data. Even how we interact as collectors has been changed dramatically thanks to the massive growth in online collecting forums. Make no mistake, I am not advocating for any of these changes. Nor am I here to judge how “good” or “bad” these changes have been for the trade as a whole. Most of these changes are both good and bad, and in previous articles I have discussed the pros and cons of each of these. There is, however, one trend that we need to discuss that has always been in the background of the trade that is starting to rear its ugly head, especially with the price of most collectibles currently soaring. This trend is both controversial and alarming, but it cannot be unseen. This trend, of course, is market manipulation. Thanks to the adoption of the internet and readily available access to online population reports for third-party graded collectibles, along with real time pricing data, it is relatively easy to convince someone that something is worth a lot more than it actually is. Does anyone really think that certain collectibles that were once selling for just a few hundred dollars and are now selling for tens of thousands of dollars are in fact currently worth this amount simply due to organic demand? Or that all of a sudden everyone is an astute investor in the antiques and collectibles trade? Log on to any pop culture collecting

lithograph posters, these are undeniable works of art that should be enjoyed.” “This is the best collection of silent film posters ever compiled,” according to Heritage Auctions Movie Posters Associate Director Zach Pogemiller. “You have to remember, not too many people focused on that specific era. In addition, movie posters were not made to be collected. They were meant to promote films and eventually be thrown away or destroyed, so there weren’t many made, and most of those that were made were not kept. “On top of that, the period most people think of as the ‘silent film era’ ran from about 1911-29, meaning some of the posters in this collection are over 100 years old. They’re basically antique paper, and again, if they were kept at all, they often weren’t stored very carefully, so the fact that they still exist at all is remarkable.” So few examples survived Chaplin’s first full-length feature film, in which he wrote, that Manley estimates that produced, directed, edited and starred, was “The Kid.” This about half of the lots are “Embrace Style” one sheet from “The Kid” (First National, 1921) is the first one ever offered by Heritage.

unique, without a replica to be had anywhere in the world. That rarity, he said, makes it difficult to part with many of them. “In a way, they are like children, because they’re unique, a lot of them in this auction are unique,” stated Manley. “When you look at them, you often have an emotional connection to when you found them.” Manley could remember years of such emotional connections during this sale, which includes the two first posters in his collection, a “King Kong” (RKO, R1938) one sheet, notable because it is the only poster in which Kong carries Fay

Wray in his hand, and a three sheet from “The New Frontier” (Republic, 1935), starring John Wayne. The auction is chock-full of stunning posters, among them what is believed to be one of just two copies of a one sheet from “The Grim Game” (Paramount, 1919) that is being offered by Heritage Auctions for the first time. The thriller starred Harry Houdini in his first feature film. Poster material of any kind from any of the five Houdini movies is extremely rare. Any showing him performing magic are even more scarce. Also offered are a pair of Disney rarities (offered in separate lots): an “Alice Gets in Dutch” (Winkler, 1924) one sheet and a one sheet from “Alice the Lumberjack” (Margaret J. Winkler, 1926). The “Alice the Lumberjack” poster includes a character that evokes the idea of Mickey Mouse before there was a Mickey Mouse. In addition, the film’s producer was Joseph Kennedy, father of John and Robert Kennedy. One impressive lot in the auction is not a poster at all. Manley’s collection includes a “White Shadows in the South Seas” (MGM, 1928) Academy Award statuette. Of the roughly 3,700 Oscars that have been handed out, only 15, including this one, have been awarded for silent films. “This is the first Oscar for a silent film ever offered at auction,” according to Manley. of those historical figures who left us a legacy of superb watercolors from the first decades of the 19th century. Bard resided in the environs of Littlestown in Union Township, Adams County, Pa. The social pressure of assimilation must have led the Bardt family and Johannes Bard to Anglicize their names to create more acceptance. It was a common practice for many German speakers to Anglicize their names to gain greater acceptance in the early 19th century. The Bardt family acquired warrants early in the history of York (now Adams) County. Surnames were recorded as Bardt, Bard and Bart. For the purpose of this article, in reference to the artist, we will use Johannes Bard, although his gravestone reads Bart. Bard painted fanciful pictures of the German Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader. The late Dr. Fred Weiser, noted historian, believed the watercolor rendition of a church with steeple illustrated here is actually the Holy Cross Church in Union Township that Bard attended in his youth. Bard is buried next to the former Barts Centenary United Methodist Church. Bard made his living as a blacksmith. Bard’s works appear to
