Witman Holds Auction For Ned Foltz Special Redware Locomotive Brings $5,500 By Karl Pass
FRIDAY JULY 17, 2020 • VOL. 51, NO. 29
Rich Penn Gears Up For Blockbuster Four-Day Sale Nearly 2,500 Lots To Be Sold Unreserved July 23 To 26 By Rich Penn Weekend road trips. Thousands of miles on backroads and byways. Lunch in Main Street cafes. All in search of that special addition to that special collection. We’ve all discovered the magic of hunting for antiques and love the stories. We’ve lived them. We’ve shared them. To some, it’s as much about the hunt as the
This 1927 Ford Model T Cretors Popcorn truck with recent restoration is ready to use. object itself. So when you have the opportunity to look through the fruits of years and years and literally millions of miles of the hunt, don’t miss it. Gathered from every nook and cranny across America, nearly 2,500 lots will be coming to auction at Rich Penn Auctions’ special sale scheduled for Thursday, July 23, to Sunday, July 26. It is one on the largest assemblages ever offered by Penn and is all unreserved. “This auction offers a truly spectacular variety, including the coolest and biggest ‘toy truck’ we’ve
ever offered,” said Penn. “This restored 1927 Model T Cretors Popcorn truck has been in service for the better part of 100 years. There are smaller trucks too and a large selection of John Deere toys, many NOS with boxes. And a whole fleet of great pedal cars, American National, Garton, Gendron, Murray and others. Nearly all are restored. Pressed steel trucks, windups, castiron banks and lots more,” added Penn. “A nice collection of Popeye windup toys will find new homes too. And some of these are so rare, you could spend a long time hunting and never find them, toys like these: Popeye and Row Boat, Heavy Hitter, Bag Puncher, Fliers, The Pilot, Basketball Player and others.” With every Penn auction, there is a great variety of Country Store, Drug Store and Soda Fountain pieces. This auction will be one with another full array of life from the early 1900s Drug Store, with syrup dispensers, ice cream dippers, trays, signs, double tower display cases, gum and candy displays, candy jars, even some rare straw dispensers. Take a look back to when the drug store was a social center and you were encouraged to stay a while. The country store was different. It provided more for the household utilitarian needs than the drug store. You’d find things for home life, especially for the kitchen. Wall and counter coffee grinders were a necessity, and there are many to choose from. Tobacco and spices, match holders, tip trays and pocket mirrors were all sourced in the country store. And the silent
Father and son team Luke and Clarke Witman, of Witman Auctioneers in Manheim, Pa., conducted a public sale on behalf of potter and collector Ned Foltz and his late wife Gwen Foltz at The Foltz Pottery shop outside Reinholds on June 27. The Witmans have been holding sales for the Foltzes since 2015. There are typically two a year held
under a tent outside of Ned’s studio/shop. An assortment of Foltz redware was sold, as were baskets, tin decorations and various decorations and folk art. Some of Ned’s collection of Walter and June Gottshall folk carvings were sold and did well. Walter Luke Gottshall (19212018) of Reinholds, Pa., married June E. (Fiant) Gottshall in 1941. The two lived near Galen Hall on the Berks and Lancaster County border. He served in WWII and was a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT
Continued from page 1
This Week: So, What Have You Been Up To?
By Peter Seibert How are you? I hope you and yours are coming through this craziness in good health. Being sequestered for so long has been a challenge to those of us who like to go out to antique shops, malls, and auctions on weekends. For those of us who are hardcore collectors, it has been serious deprivation. During the COVID-19 downtime, I did focus on some longneeded projects. While I hope everyone is soon able to spend some time away from their homes, I do offer these as suggestions of things to do if you are caught up, by accident or choice, with being in
your home again for a period of time. Sort the Collection Almost every collector I know of has poor record keeping for their collections. The best have files or computer records showing the item and where purchased but often without research notes. The worst are those who rely upon their own memories. So, I purchased, online, mylar sleeves and began to sort and file my disparate documentation files out according to the pieces in the collection. It needed to be done, and thanks to my subscription to Ancestry.com, I was able to spend some time chasing down loose ends on a few items. Write Up the Family Stuff I have done this several times in the past, but as my daughters get older, I realized the need to regularly update this. Its not complicated but simply my notes on what family

treasures I own and their histories. This time, and it was invaluable, I had moved some things around in a rush, and so several items were missing. They were not completely lost, just sort of lost! Anyhow, I spent a chunk of time chasing the wayward items (deeds, jewelry, family photos) and made sure to get them in order and notes written on things. Reframing So I am not a framer by any stretch of the word, but I took my time at home to order some foam core and start removing cardboard from old images. This is truly necessary, and I am always shocked at the damage done to works on paper because of poor framing. I spent several days with a cutter, straight edge, and framing tool to remove wooden and cardboard backings and replace them. I also made pencil notes on the reverse of many of the items about the works. One of my interests is Japanese prints, and so adding artist names and dates is helpful for future owners and viewers.
Culling I have grown and shrunk and moved my library more times than my buddy Josh Unruh’s back can stand it. Books are the lifeblood of collecting even in an internet age because so many references are not online and only available as print copies. I found myself looking at the double rows of books on my shelves and realizing that I probably had an issue. A local bookseller who had reopened was more than happy to take them as trade. I dropped 16 cases of books and ended up getting a handful of super rare volumes that I will use.
Peter Seibert, a native Pennsylvanian, grew up in the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as a museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Virginia, and Wyoming. He holds a Master of Arts in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interior design, and history.
more. Some rare early broadsides, ledger books, local ephemera, indentures, deeds, books, and taufshein sold. Two ledger books outlining Samuel Rex’s arrival in Schaefferstown from Germantown in 1789 went for $1,356. An early land deed signed by Alexander Shaeffer (founder of Schaefferstown) printed in Philadelphia (1758) sold for $508.50, and an excellent hand-drawn taufshein fraktur for Christian Ulrich realized $1,356. A very rare and early Ephrata press broadside sold for $1,017, and although not local, an 1846 travel book, “Route and Distances to Oregon and California, sold for $5,424. How To Care For Your Silver Whether in the form jewelry, utensils, candlesticks, decorative pieces or serving trays, your silver possessions are valuable and deserve proper care.We know to keep them in a safe place, yet proper care of silver escapes many. Here’s how to care for your silver. The biggest problem is tarnish, that discoloration mostly from humidity. A humidity level of 45 to 50
percent is best for showing and displaying silver, but that’s difficult to maintain in most homes. In any case, be certain to avoid storing silver in highly damp places, like basements. You can stave off tarnish by using your silver frequently, not just for holidays and company. Usage helps give a nice patina to silverware, and since you’ll be cleaning it after use, helps fight tarnish. Wash silverware in warm, soapy, phosphate-free detergent water quickly after use,

you can buff your items with a clean, soft cloth of flannel or cotton; don’t use tissue or paper towels, as they can scratch. Wear gloves to keep hand oils from silver. Simply rub the silver with your cloth. Don’t pull or push, as silver is pliable. Polish and clean crevices and hard-to-reach areas with a cotton swab and remove dried polish the same way. You can do this with silver polish but toss it out if it’s gritty. When you gain the luster you want, store your silver in cloth pouches or soft flannel, linen or cotton cloth, even a towel. Don’t use newspaper; it promotes tarnish. As for jewelry, be certain not to wear it in a swimming
pool or hot tub where chlorinated water could damage it. Put on your makeup and hairspray before your jewelry and remove it before doing any work involving ammonia or bleach, which could damage the finish. Tips for cleaning jewelry are essentially the same: wash, rinse, dry with soft cloth. Polish with a soft, dry cloth or a tarnish-removing liquid free of ammonia. Polish gently so as not to remove patina. Store your silver jewelry in a cool, dry spot away from extreme heat, direct sunlight and chemicals. Sun can fade some gems. Follow these rules and tips, and your silver will last a long time in good condition.

A ledger drawing by a Southern Cheyenne artist soared to $106,250 to establish a world record for a single ledger drawing and to lead Heritage Auctions’ Ethnographic Art, American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Auction featuring the I.S.K. Reeves V and Sara W. Reeves collection to $1,228,339 on May 29 in Dallas, Texas. The auction boasted sell-through rates of more than 93 percent by value and by lots sold. The auction’s top lot was part of the collection of Keith and Sara Reeves, who have spent more than half a century researching and pursuing artwork in an ongoing effort to improve their Florida-based collection. The Southern Cheyenne ledger drawing by Howling
Wolf soared to more than five times its low pre-auction estimate before finishing as the auction’s top lot and establishing the new standard for individual ledger drawings. “Howling Wolf, a Southern Cheyenne warrior, is the only Plains artist known to have created ledger drawings in all three phases of that art form, which is before the reservation era, during his prison exile at Fort Marion, and after his return to the reservation, said Heritage Auctions senior Ethnographic Art specialist Delia Sullivan. Nearly a dozen collectors pursued a large and important Gran Cocle Gold Pendant Panama until it finished at $50,000, against a pre-auction estimate of $20,000-30,000.

global pandemic, we are eager to continue our dedicated work with posters. Our 81st Rare Posters Auction will include not only the highquality works that our collectors expect, but will also feature notable works that we have never had at auction before, said Jack Rennert, president of Poster Auctions International. The auction will kick off with a collection of posters from Spain, many of which are seen here for the first time. Largely from the Modernisme era, these designs herald the revival of Catalan culture and promote the democratization and integration of the arts, blending influences from PreRaphaelite painting, Japanese woodblock prints, and Belgian lithography. Highlights include Alejandro de Riquer’s 1900 “The Four Seasons (est. $7,000-$9,000); “Femina, by an anonymous artist (est. $4,000-$5,000); and Carlos Verger Fioretti’s 1911 “Barcelona / Ciudad de Invierno (est. $4,000-$5,000). Handpainted posters from North Vietnam will also be available for the first time. These images, from the collection of Deborah Salter, express the struggles of the Vietnam War and hope for a better future. Artists responded to the sense of urgency by handpainting, rather than printing, their posters for quicker dissemination to the vast rural population. Works of particular note include Thanh’s ca. 1960 “All Working Together to Improve the Collective Economy (est. $2,500-$3,000) and Kho’s 1975 “North and South We Are One (est. $3,000-$4,000). As always, transport posters for bicycles, aviation, and automobiles are featured. Highlights include

Brancher and the complete titles and descriptions (est. $45,000-$55,000). Further works include his 1896 “Jobâ€? (est. $15,000-$20,000) and his 1899 “MoĂŤt & Chandonâ€? (est. $30,000-$35,000). The Belle Epoque continues to enthrall with ToulouseLautrec, who chronicled the gritty and enticing night life of Paris. Tour de force works include his 1894 “Eldorado / Aristide Bruantâ€? (est. $70,000$90,000), the 1893 “Caudieuxâ€? Eight posters from the Tour de France are included, two of which are hand-signed by Greg LeMond. Collectors of Art Nouveau have a plethora of heralded images to choose from. Bonnard’s 1896 “Salon des Centâ€? is always a must for collectors (est. $7,000-$9,000). Several images from Bouisset are sure to charm, including two versions of his iconic “Chocolat Menierâ€? (est. $3,000-$4,000). Classic designs from ChĂŠret include his larger-than-life 1894 “Palais de Glaceâ€? (est. $5,000$6,000), but the showstopper is his ca. 1905 Project pour “Palais des Rois de Sardaigne: Paintingâ€? (est. $17,000$20,000), a joyous preliminary work for his mural in the palace’s gallery, which is visible to this day. From Malerba, a large-scale 1910 design, “Mele & Ci. / Mode NovitĂ ,â€? is sure to impress, as is Roubille’s charming ca. 1909 poster, “Spratt’s Patent Ltd.â€? (both est. $10,000-$12,000). Of course, the pinnacle of Art Nouveau is Alphonse Mucha. Twenty-five of his greatest works will be on offer, including “La Dame aux Cameliasâ€? (est. $25,000$30,000) and “Lorenzzacioâ€? (est. $14,000-$17,000), both

Fry Visible “Mae West” Gas Pump From The 1920s Gavels For (CA) $7,800 In Miller & Miller’s Online Advertising, Toys, And Historic Objects Auction Kuntz Tin Lithograph Beer Tray Sells For $7,500 A Fry visible “Mae West” gas pump made in America in the 1920s sold for $7,800, and a Kuntz tin lithographed beer tray made in Canada and featuring a St. Bernard dog graphic brought $7,500 in an online-only Advertising, Toys and Historic Objects sale held June 20 by Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. All prices quoted are in Canadian dollars. The 699-lot auction was packed with advertising and signs, toys, general store items, petroliana (gas station collectibles), automobilia, breweriana and historical ephemera, much of it Canadian in origin. There was no live gallery bidding, but over 400 people registered to bid online and collectively placed 6,658 bids. Overall, the auction g r o s s e d $294,558. The Fry gas This Clearvision visible gas pump, made in Toronto, Canada, in the 1930s, 10 feet tall, with the base, nozzle and brass plate all stamped, repainted, sold for $3,000. pump, 9 feet tall, was stamped “Guaranteed Liquid Measure Co., Pittsburgh, Pa.” It was mechanically untested and had undergone heavy repairs, but that didn’t deter eager bidders. The 13-inch diameter antique Kuntz tray, one of Canada’s most coveted beer trays, had gorgeous color and gloss, showing a detailed image of a St. Bernard dog behind a bottle of Kuntz’s lager. Other top lots included a Coca-Cola school policeman sign, 60 inches tall, the “fishtail” logo version, with two lithographed metal panels standing on a cast metal base ($3,900), and a J.M. Fortier Cigar framed lithograph, housed in a 35.5-by-27.5 inch gilt plaster frame with molded tobacco leaves, marked “Heffron & Phelps, Lithographers” (N.Y.) lower right ($3,000). “Our online auction platform has proven advantageous during these uncertain times,” said Ethan Miller of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd. “The June auction attracted nearly 7,000 bids from within Canada and around the globe. There is no question that the enthusiasm among the collector community is alive and well, if not stronger than before. The sale was a huge success.” Miller said he’s seen growing international interest for typically Canadian items, pointing out that the Kuntz beer tray went to an international bidder. “There is a ripe appetite for quality, fresh-toAn Arno Model 31A pedestal air meter, made by Romort Mfg. Many of Saturday’s top sellers were a combination of the two,” added Miller. Internet bidding was facilitated by the popular online bidding platform Live Auctioneers.com, as well as the Miller & Miller website (www.MillerandMillerAuctions .com). Telephone and absentee bids were also accepted. A Goodyear 8by-2-foot singlesided porcelain sign, made in Canada in the 1930s and m a r k e d “Property of Goodyear Co.
