him among the finest late 20th-century smiths working in the traditional ways of the Pennsylvania Germans. Other traditional craftsmen in the region who worked in iron included Larry Long, Henry Dietrich, Hap Fisher, and Charles Rittle. In 1977, Claudia Hopf published an article on Loose in “Spinning Wheel” magazine. “The article really did a lot for me,” Loose said. “Because of it,

the Smithsonian Institute contacted me about making spiral candlesticks for its gift shop and sales catalog. Eventually our contract included other things, and with the work, I paid off the house, which my father and I built. I made the cover of their catalog in 1979, and with the orders felt comfortable enough to leave teaching the following year and go full-time. I was so busy back then. It was the break that I needed and a real pivotal moment for me.” “I had a student who was a

talented woodworker turn the wooden bases for the spiral candlesticks.” The student was Jeff Fiant, today known for his quality reproduction Windsor chairs. Like other traditional craftsmen working in the heyday around the Bicentennial, when all things Americana and historic were vogue, Tom Loose played a role. He did demonstrations at shows and historic sites sharing his trade and art. “Country Living Magazine,” “Country Gardens Magazine,” and most recently “A Simple Life Magazine.” The gardens at Seven Gates Farm were the living laboratory for Jimmie to experiment with ideas, plantings, and new projects. “As soon as you sit down,” Cramer once said laughing, “you see something else that needs to be done.” The pair also pieced together a vast, early collection of American antiques and American flags. The flag collection was featured on CBS “This Morning” for several Independence Day segments. Jimmie is survived by aunts, uncles, many cousins, and a large community of dear friends. He was predeceased by his partner, Dean Johnson; his parents, Harry Monroe and Janet Lee Van Fossen Cramer; and his only sibling, Doug Cramer.

Collectors don’t generally attend auctions just to look. Their goal is to compete aggressively and bring home the best, and that’s what ingallery and remote bidders did on June 8 and 9 during Morphy’s $2.6 million Fine and Decorative Arts auction. Bidding paddles were confidently airborne for the more than 2,500 diverse lots that ranged from antique leadedglass lamps, art pottery and clocks to glittering jewelry and pedigreed watches. As predicted, top-lot honors went to a rare molded and gilded-copper weathervane depicting a full-bodied stand- A monumental 22-inch ing Massasoit Indian wearing a Grueby two-tone cylindrical vase, botanical motif, ca. 1900, marked “Grueby Faience, Boston,” sold for $25,830 against an estimate of $10,000-$18,000.

the spotlight at Morphy’s and were the subject of both studious admiration and determined bidding. Those of monumental size were particularly popular, like a 22inch Grueby two-tone cylindrical vase made around 1900. Decorated with long yellow/green leaves and buds, and marked Grueby Faience, Boston, it sold for $25,830 against an estimate of $10,000-$18,000. Other American beauties in the category included, an 18inch Rookwood silver-overlay vase designed ca. 18811905 by Albert Robert Valentien, which earned $17,920 against an estimate of $5,000-$10,000, and a ca. 1917 Fredric Carder for Steuben Glass variation of the “Cintra,” which was accompanied by two Carder reference books. Estimated at $1,500-$2,000, the appealing candy-pink striped creation soared to $21,120. There was also formidable transatlantic competition for European pottery, as evidenced by a number of estimate-defying prices. A monumental 19-inch Charles Catteau for Boch Freres pottery vase with charming images of an antlered buck with his companion doe went out for $19,680, nearly four times the high estimate. Amphora, a brand that attracts a dedicated following to Morphy’s sales, met with its usual
