Brandywine Unveils New Bronze Sculpture York Show “Tipping Point” To Greet Visitors In Front Of Museum Entrance Following its grand reopening to the public, the Brandywine River Museum of Art has unveiled a towering new sculpture at its front entrance by local artist Rikki Morley Saunders. Titled “Tipping Point” (2019), the sculpture is cast in bronze and features two majestic and fearsome peacocks intertwined in mid-air battle. The life-sized sculpture measures almost seven feet tall with a length of six feet and a width of over five feet. Inspired by nature, Saunders focuses exclusively on animals in her sculptural practice, capturing the passion and spirit of various creatures in intricate detail based off her direct study. In “Tipping Point,” the artist’s largest work to date, Saunders explores the drama of peacocks, conveying the complexities of a bird that is prized for its serene beauty, yet is also remarkably strong and fiercely territorial. As portrayed in “Tipping Point,” peacocks fight by rising into the air on their massive wings and using their beaks and talons. Despite the weight of the bronze, Saunders created a buoyant, spiraling composition that reveals and obscures aspects of the two birds as you walk around it. The sculpture symbolizes defining moments; the tipping point referenced in the title is revealed here as the last moment in which an action can be stopped without repercussion. “I am honored and thrilled to have ‘Tipping Point’ in the Brandywine’s collection,” said artist Rikki Morley Saunders. “I have lived with and observed peacocks for over 30 years. I hope my sculpture conveys the raw beauty of these magnificent creatures, with their powerful, swirling aerobatic maneuvers and intense exploitation of feathers, that depicts a fleeting moment when the outcome of their impassioned encounter is still unknown.” “Rikki is an artist with a remarkably astute sense of form,” added Thomas Padon, the James H. Duff Director of the museum. “Over the years she has created a large body of sculpture depicting animals. Through intense observation she captures these creatures in minute detail and infuses their spirit into each sculpture. ‘Tipping Point’ is her most ambitious piece to date, and it is with great excitement that we now introduce this sculpture to generations of Brandywine visitors.” Based in Chester County, Pa., the artist has exhibited at many

museums. A fellow of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Saunders is an active member of the National Sculpture Society, the California Art Club, the Society of Animal Artists and the Audubon Society. In addition to “Tipping Point,” the museum’s campus grounds are home to four other bronze sculptures: “Boy with Hawk” (1971), by Charles Parks (19222012); “Miss Gratz” (1984), by J. Clayton Bright (b. 1946); “Helen” (1989), by André Harvey (19412018); and “R. B.” (2004), by Dan Ostermiller (b. 1956). Formerly at the entrance to the museum, “Boy with Hawk” was recently relocated to a new home on the Brandywine’s campus overlooking its Monarch Migration Station, which features plantings of milkweed and other native flowers enjoyed by local pollinators. The late artist Charles Parks originally intended for this sculpture to be viewed at ground level so that visitors could interact spatially with the larger-than-life figure and could see the details of the doves and hawk. The sculpture’s new location along the Brandywine’s inner campus trail will offer visitors a fresh perspective of this beloved sculpture surrounded by nature. The museum is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. Summer hours of operation are Wednesday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed Tuesdays). Up-todate information about visiting the Brandywine can be found at www.brandywine.org/now-open.

2020, there are several objects that deserve special notice. The following are a few of these examples. Furniture The Hennages often acquired objects that illustrated the variety of options available to local consumers of the period. Wealthy Philadelphians could add optional elements or ornament to a basic furniture form based on their taste or the size of their pocketbook. A simple tea table might have a round top, uncarved pillar and legs, and pad feet. This Philadelphia example from ca. 1770, which descended in the family of William Dunn, who founded Dunnstown, Pa., has the most expensive shaped and carved top, known in the period as “scalloped,” and an extraordinary amount of rococo carving on its legs ending in ball and claw feet. The rare columnar-shaped pillar is carved with flutes. Philadelphia cabinet shops often had specialist carvers execute these detailed embellishments. One carver, who likely produced the carving on

Arion, show promoter, does an outstanding job of assembling topnotch participants while keeping the variety as broad as possible to ensure that nearly anyone can find a “new” treasure at York. antiques shows in the MidAtlantic. Also, according to Arion, it’s one of the oldest shows in the country. sets a new standard for events dedicated solely to comic books. “We added a night to our weekly auctions because we simply had too many comic books to sell in one night without keeping live bidders awake too late!,” said Barry Sandoval, “and I think this record total shows that there is plenty of quality, not just quantity. To give one example, we have sold 35 copies of Hulk #181 so far in 2021, but still have many more to come.” Forty bids poured in for Journey Into Mystery #83 (Marvel, 1962), CGC FN+ 6.5 off-white to white pages, until it finished at $26,400 to lead all lots in the auction. The No. 6 issue on Overstreet’s list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics, with its dramatic cover by Jack Kirby and art by Kirby and Steve Ditko, includes the origin and first appearance of Thor. According to the June 2021 CGC census, it is one of just 66 copies graded in 6.5, with only 173 known to carry a higher grade. Challenging for the auction’s top result was X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1963), CGC VG 4.0 white pages, which brought $24,000. The issue features the origin and first appearance of the X-Men (Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Marvel Girl), as well as the first appearances of Professor X and Magneto. Jack Kirby created the cover and art for the issue, which is ranked No. 8 on Overstreet’s list of Top 50 Silver Age Comics. The offered copy, from the Oregon Coast Collection, is one of 397 graded 4.0, according to the June 2021 CGC census. Other performers in the comic book category were The Incredible Hulk #181 (Marvel, 1974), CGC NM 9.4 white pages, selling for $19,200, and The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962), CGC GD/VG 3.0 white pages, $18,600. Less than a week after its record-smashing $22.4 million Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction, Heritage Auctions set a new world record for the largest weekly comics auction ever held when its Sunday and Monday Comic Books Weekly Select Auction (June 20 and 21) and its Wednesday Comic Art and Animation Select Auction (June 23) amassed $904,285 in total sales. The Comic Books Auction reached $759,941 in sales, while the Comic Art and Animation Auction brought $144,344. Add in Tuesday’s $64,715 Video Games and Trading Card Games Auction (June 22), and the department’s weekly sales climbed to $969,000, smashing the previous record of $799,725.

“Ring around the rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down.” I’m sure those of us of a certain age will remember saying this little ditty, not realizing there was an older version, which replaced “ashes” with “A-tishoo!” Some people claim the nursery rhyme is about the plague. The “rosies” are the red blotches on the skin. The “posies” are the sweetsmelling flowers people carried to try to ward off the plague, and “atishoo” refers to the sneezing fits of people with pneumonic plague. Other versions of the rhyme signify joy and love instead of suffering and death. Thus was born the posy holder, a lady’s accessory in silver filagree or other metal, resembling a small vase, filled with flowers. The bouquet shape was usually small and rounded. to move to a brand-new venue that can accommodate future growth, which we know is coming. Already, we have 15 more tables booked for the August show than we had last year.” The auction portion of the three-day event will feature 394 lots of pre-1900 Western artifacts, antique and vintage firearms (with a special emphasis on Winchesters and Colts), Western art and advertising, and cowboy and Native American artifacts and relics. Highlights include the Mike Olson estate collection of rare rifles and cowboy gear, and Native American artifacts from the collection of celebrated photographer Carl Moon (1878-1948), who lived with Hopi, Apache and Navajo tribes while respectfully documenting their cultures and practices. Aug. 27, 28, and 29. The on-site live auction, which will also be accessible to online bidders, starts at 2 p.m. MT on Saturday, Aug. 28. “Dealers are going to love the new venue, which has been built for convenience and even has its own exit off the freeway,” said Tarbell. “It’s designed with parking that backs up to a large entry, making it very easy for dealers to load in and load out. Guests will appreciate the ample parking, dedicated

concession area, and free WiFi. It’s located five miles east of Cheyenne, Wy., so it’s only minutes away from hotels and the downtown Cheyenne Historic District.” Tarbell says approximately 3,000 people attended last year’s Cheyenne show and auction and that his most recent Cheyenne gun show, which did not incorporate an auction, attracted 4,300 guests. “That shows you how quickly the firearms and Western collectibles hobby is growing. Furniture Miniatures Collectors have long been interested in miniatures: smallscale pieces replicating the same styles, proportions and construction techniques seen in their larger cousins. Miniature furniture was a specific love of June Hennage’s. It is unknown whether these pieces were intended for display by makers or adult owners or for play by children. The tradition of largescale furnished dollhouses or cabinet houses for wealthy adults in 17th- and 18th-century Europe may have influenced the production of these slightly larger American examples suggesting that some level of both display and play were intended. This miniature blockfront chest of drawers made in Boston, Mass., between 1750 and 1775 of mahogany and white pine is typical of Boston blockfronts and has the same large dovetail-shaped joint between the base molding and bottom board. This construction detail helps to distinguish pieces made in Boston from those of Newport, R.I., even in a miniature example. These selected objects are but a few of the exemplary objects that will be on view in “A Gift to the Nation: The Joseph and June Hennage Collection,” which opened June 26 in the Miodrag and Elizabeth Ridgely Blagojevich Gallery at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the recently expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. The exhibition will remain on view until 2023. Additional information about the Art Museums and Colonial Williamsburg as well as tickets are available online at www.colonialwilliamsburg.org or by calling 855-296-6627.

this table, is identified only by his work and is known today as the Garvan Carver. Regionally specific furniture forms particularly appealed to Joe and June Hennage. Known today as bombé furniture, American versions of the curvaceous forms inspired by British and French precedents were almost exclusively produced in the coastal Massachusetts cities of Boston, Salem and Marblehead. This mahogany and white pine bombé chest of drawers made in Boston, ca. 1770, exemplified a specific geographic aesthetic that differs from Philadelphia and New York examples in its focus on form rather than applied ornament. While the drawer sides of this example follow the shape of the case’s sides, other makers of bombé chests chose to have vertical drawer sides, leaving the inner case sides vertical instead of following the curved exterior. Silver With its ample proportions, shell and scroll feet with prominent junctures and free-standing handle, the sauce boat fashioned by Samuel Burt, ca. 1750, embodies the full-blown rococo style in silver from Boston, Mass. Although a masterful craftsman, few pieces made by Burt survive due to his untimely death at the age of 31. Approximately three dozen objects are known today by him, including large and complex forms such as flagons, tankards, and teapots. Silver bearing the mark of Samuel Burt is noted for its balance, scale and substantial weight. Like his two younger brothers, William and Benjamin, Samuel

followed his father John into the silversmithing trade; together, they created one of the best-known dynasties of the craft in New England. Ceramics The five-piece garniture made of hard-paste porcelain in Jingdezhen, China, ca. 1785, graced the parlor fireplace mantel at Joe and June Hennage’s Williamsburg home for many years. It was a gift from Joe to June and was among their early porcelain acquisitions. The decoration, often referred to as the “tobacco leaf” or “pseudo-tobacco leaf” pattern by modern-day collectors, is most likely derived from flowers and foliage in Southeast Asia or the Pacific. The pattern was particularly popular in late 18th-century and early 19th-century America. Archaeological evidence and intact survivals with histories of ownership reveal the pattern was owned in Virginia, Maryland and South Carolina. The small hard-paste porcelain dish, also made in China around the same time period, is from the first service bearing the insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati. June Hennage saw this dish advertised in The Magazine Antiques by legendary Chinese porcelain dealer Elinor Gordon and subsequently purchased it as a special surprise for Joe. The service was ordered by Supercargo Samuel Shaw on his inaugural voyage to Canton in 1784, marking the young United States’ entry into direct trade with China following the American Revolution. Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee eventually purchased the service for George Washington, who served as the Society of the Cincinnati’s first president.

before sanitation and concerns with personal hygiene, the nosegays were carried to superstitiously ward off disease or to camouflage the unpleasant smells of the street. Posy holders are also known as “tussie mussies” and have existed since medieval times. Doilies or ribbons are

usually used to bind the stems in the arrangements. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, posy holders became a romantic fashion accessory that would hold any flowers that gentlemen callers would bring during courting. They also kept the woman’s delicate and expensive clothing protected from water droplets by

keeping the wet stems in the handle of the posy holder. See these and other items at the Grist Mill Antiques Center at 127 Hanover St., Pemberton, N.J. The multi-dealer shop is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information, call 609-726-1588.
