Abner (1921-2010) And Aaron Zook (1921-2003)

Continued from page 1

A Brief History On Amish Identical Twin 3-D Diorama Artists By Kevin Zook Born in 1921, identical twins Abner and Aaron Zook were companions and competitors all their lives. Their mother Annie was an avid crafter, and she actively encouraged her sons in their creative pursuits. Growing up in a large farming family did not leave much spare cash for hobbies. Abner and Aaron had to use some creativity for supplies. Rooster tail feathers became paint brushes, and horsehair was trimmed to use as tails and manes on the horses they carved. Instead of playing outside or attending public auctions, the twins used their free time to carve and paint. They once carved a chain together that stretched around the perimeter of their bedroom ceiling. Eventually, a businessman from Lancaster took an interest in the boys, buying them proper brushes and paints. As they grew and then married, they continued

creating models of things familiar to them. Conestoga wagons complete with horses and harness, sleighs, buggies, stagecoaches, McCormick reapers, and spinning wheels in bottles all came to life under their gifted hands. Both twins tried farming, but it was not a good fit for them. During that time, they continued to use their spare time to carve. During a trip to Germany in 1952, Aaron saw woodcarvings that fired his imagination. He envisioned a “shadow-box type of diorama. Family lore has it that Aaron came back and made the first one. Abner did his first one in 1959 and began selling pieces in the early 1960s. Aaron continued farming longer than Abner, but he eventually began to pursue steadily making dioramas that Abner was making in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970s, Aaron was invited to set up a workshop and gallery at The People’s Place in Intercourse, Pa. The business no longer

An Abner Zook piece from 1982, depicting Lancaster Square (Penn Square) in downtown Lancaster, ca. 1795. A removable building in the center changes it to an open-air market scene. It sold in 1992 at the 12th annual benefit auction for the Hinkletown Mennonite School. The school commissioned Zook for several years to make a diorama for its annual fundraising event. According to Zook, it was Anber’s first work of a Lancaster city scene and copied from the book “Old Lancaster: A Historic Pennsylvania Community. exists. From that location, he pursued the tourist market, making many small collector plates from molds. He also produced larger one-off pieces, many of them shipped across the U.S. and internationally to both government officials and some connections in Hollywood. Meanwhile, Abner struggled to find an outlet for selling his pictures. He tried art shows as well as a paid

representative/agent. Finally, an early Jewish client from New York City introduced him to her circle of friends, and he began to get orders. He placed pieces in some well-known restaurants in Lancaster County and hosted clients at his Womelsdorf, Pa., gallery. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he had a six-year lead time on orders. Shady Maple

Harrison & Morton, Garfield & Arthur, and Blaine & Logan, brought $250. A Theodore Roosevelt 1912 campaign bandana, cotton, measuring 22by-25.25 inches, reading “Progressive / Roosevelt / 1912 / Battle Flag, was fought to $200. It took $188 to buy an Emma Goldman, anarchist and political activist, flyer promoting her 1915 lectures in Chicago, Ill. I would imagine many of us, if seen while walking through an antique mall, would jump at the chance to get a pottery Herbert Hoover “two chickens in every pot vessel with handle, which went for $63 in the online sale. A nice lot consisting of various presidential ephemera, with a John F. Kennedy clipped signature and 1961 inauguration invitation, sold for $438. A couple of large dealer lots will

wrap-up this review. First, a collection of late 19th/early 20th century political ephemera with presidential inscribed photographs sold for $1,188, while the top-selling political lot of the sale was a collection of 20th-century political buttons, which had a $300-$500 estimate, brought $5,938. Cowan’s Auctions may be contacted at 513-871-1670 or info@cowans.com.

apprenticed to Miller in about 1759. Isaac married Miller’s daughter Elizabeth in 1764. On Aaron Miller’s death in 1777, Isaac Brokaw inherited Aaron Miller’s clockmaking tools. Aaron Brokaw would appear to have taken up an apprenticeship under his father from the 1780s. Isaac and Elizabeth moved their family to Bridge Town, N.J., around 1790, and Aaron continued to work alongside his father, with his first clocks being signed “Aaron Brokaw, Bridge Town.” He took over his father’s business upon his death in 1826. Aaron Brokaw was certainly not the last of this respected family of clockmakers; his uncle, Cornelius Miller, and cousin, Kennedy Miller, were also clockmakers of note. Kennedy Miller also worked in Elizabethtown, so it may have been too many clockmakers in one place that prompted Isaac Brokaw to move to Bridge Town. Clocks made by these three generations of clockmakers are elegant, stylish and of the finest quality. Aaron Brokaw fought with the

“The Barnes family clock needs to find a new home,” read an email sent to Joe Bodnar about a month ago. This led to the pickup of an important New Jersey clock that will be sold Wednesday, Aug. 5, at an online-only auction Bodnar’s has put together. Live in-person auctions in New Jersey are not allowed. Since 1825, the clock has been a handme-down to the eldest son for five generations. With the new eldest son moving out of state and none of his family interested in the clock or continuing the tradition, the consignor felt it was important to sell it in New Jersey, where it was made, and reached out to Bodnar. “When we came to pick it up, it was running in the foyer of their North Jersey house,” said Bodnar. Among the things making this clock special is the family of its maker. Aaron Brokaw was from an illustrious line of Colonial clockmakers. His grandfather, Aaron Miller (d. 1777), after whom he was named, was a clockmaker of some note in Elizabethtown, N.J. Miller had lived in New York before setting up his business in Elizabethtown. The New York Gazetteer (Nov. 23, 1747) described Miller as “a clockmaker in Elizabethtown [who]…makes and sells all sorts of clocks after the Dutch manner…he likewise makes compasses and chains for surveyors.” Miller produced a clock to hang in the First Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown in 1759, which cost £10 5s 9p. Isaac Brokaw, Aaron Brokaw’s father, had been

holding two-day auctions every other week. “We still do not have guidance from the Edison Board of Health on how we can reopen with in-person sales,” said Bodner. He does plan to go back to the New Jersey Convention and Expo Center in Edison, N.J. “We want to keep our customers and employees safe, and online is working. I miss my full staff and customer base, but until we see guidelines or a vaccine, I don’t see us going back to the way we were with a stand around un-social-distanced format,” said Bodnar. The online sale also features a live broadcast where items are shown in the box lots as they sell them and have live auctioneers calling during the sale. “This keeps the feeling of being

at a live event. It is the best scenario for what we can do in these circumstances. The only problem we are having at this time is getting the same amount of lots sold that we have handled in the past. We used to handle selling 3,000 lots in a day. We are adapting to this new normal. We converted our warehouse on our property to a showroom and now are conducting by appointment only previews the two days prior to the auction. One person at a time previews to keep everyone safe. You can leave absentee bids or from home bid on Liveauctioneers and then either have the lot shipped or pick up by appointment,” followed up Bodnar.
