Atlanta’s Scott Antique Market Returns Aug. 6 To 9 After Four-Month Hiatus, Popular Monthly Antiques Show Resumes By Tom O’Hara Scott Antique Market halted for months and is now ready to return to monthly action. Don Scott announced on behalf of his exhibitors, shoppers and staff that his monthly show will resume Thursday, Aug. 6, to Sunday, Aug. 9, at Atlanta Expo Centers (North and South Buildings). Speaking on behalf of his company and the 3,000 exhibitors that set up each month, “All the dealers have been chomping at the bit to get back to work and again sell their antiques, home décor and vintage collectibles,” said Scott. He was quick

to point out, “Even with no shows, dealers continued to buy more collections, so this first show after the nearly five months will have wonderful offerings of first-time-onthe-market collections.” The monthly show is held in two enormous buildings with 3,000 dealers and their extensive inventories with typically several thousand shoppers over the course of four days. Due to the social protections brought about by the COVID19 restrictions, there will be some different measures taken. Everyone will be expected to wear face masks or safety shields. Scott has

Morphy’s Coin-Op And Antique Advertising Auction Strikes $3 Million Jackpot J.P. Seeburg Orchestrion Leads Spectacular Array Of Mechanical Music, Gambling And Vending Machines, Selling For $83,025 For many collectors, Morphy’s Coin-op and Antique Advertising Auction, originally scheduled for March and delayed until June 20 and 21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was a welcome event. The collecting hobby had been challenged by months of cancelled antique shows and conventions, and a large audience of socially distanced gallery bidders, together with hundreds of phone and online bidders, were anxious to make some high-quality new acquisitions. Morphy Auctions founder and president Dan Morphy noted that on some lots there were as many as 200 online competitors, a reflection of the coin-op market’s stamina and the insatiable desire for rare pieces from pedigreed collections. The final tally exceeded a gross total of $3 million. Four fresh-to-market private collections were featured in the two-day event, which encompassed mechanical music, slot and vending machines; cash registers and general store items; carousel and carnival novelties; and a broad array of antique advertising that ranged from eyecatching trade stimulators to quaint occupational shaving mugs. The top lot of the sale was a J.P. Seeburg Style “H” Orchestrion, whose richly harmonious instruments include a piano; bass and snare drums; a rank of flute and violin pipes; xylophone, cymbal, castanets and more. Made during the first quarter of the 20th century, the versatile music-maker spent most of its life at the famed Crystal Saloon in Virginia City, Nev. Against an estimate of $60,000-$90,000, it sold for $83,025.

The Kruse Dial Machine, complete with original marquee reading “THIS REGISTERS AMOUNT OF PURCHASE,” expertly restored, sold for $20,910 against an estimate of $6,000$10,000.

A Wagner Mfg Co. “Lion” one-cent peanut vending machine distributed by A. Marx & Co., regarded by many as the ultimate of all “tall-globed” peanut machines, all original, depicted in “Silent Salesman Too” by Bill Enes, sold above estimate for $27,060.

An original Roovers one-cent “Puss in Boots” fortune teller arcade machine, 1896 patent, dispenses card with fortune, is one of only a small number of original examples known to exist, and sold within estimate for $67,650.

A very rare Victor Novelty Works musical 25-cent upright slot machine known as “The Victor,” from 1906, with brightly colored glue-chip front glass, one of the best of all known examples, sold above estimate for $79,950. gambling section, a Mills “Twin Chicago” double-slot machine with original music box attachment, was designed to accept quarters on one side and nickels on the other. It was marketed as a boon to operators who could offer their customers two gambling machines while only paying for one operating license. A rare model in beautiful original condition, it settled at $79,950, the midpoint of its $60,000-$90,000 estimate. Also realizing $79,950, “The Victor,” a 25-cent upright slot machine, was manufactured in 1906 by Victor Novelty Works. Lavishly embellished with hand carving on the oak case, and with nickel-plated adornments and brightly colored glue-chip front glass, the example offered by Morphy’s was one of the nicest of all known to the hobby. It had been estimated at $50,000-$70,000. Vending machines capable of dispensing gum, candy, peanuts, breath lozenges or even a spray of perfume were once a staple at train stations and other public places. Ninety-five coin-operated antique “vendors” crossed the auction block at Morphy’s June event and achieved excellent prices. Leading the group was a coveted Roovers 1-cent Puss in Boots arcade fortuneteller. A wood and glass floor model on cast-iron cabriole legs, the Puss in Continued on page 3

Boots machine showcases a whimsical feline automaton that, upon the crank of a side handle, dispenses a fortune card to the patron. “In recent years, some reproductions were made of the Puss in Boots. Only a few originals still exist, the one in our sale being one of the best,” said Dan Morphy. It easily reached its estimate range, selling for $67,650. The “Lion,” a one-cent vending machine made by Wagner Mfg Co., for A. Marx & Co., is regarded by many collectors as the ultimate “tallglobed” peanut machine. Bidders jumped at the chance to pursue a fine book example of the Lion in all-original condition. It swept past its $15,000-$20,000 estimate, landing at $27,060. The auction’s incredible variety was evidenced throughout the top 10 list, which also includes such prized rarities as a Kruse Dial Machine, which records the amount of a retail customer’s purchase, $20,910 against an estimate of $6,000-$10,000; a Chero Crush soda fountain syrup dispenser with old ball pump, $16,250; a Boston Cigar and Tobacco Company tobacco cutter promoting “Flying Dude” five-cent cigars, $11,993 against an estimate of $1,200$1,600; and a 1940 Wurlitzer Jukebox Model 71, complete and in excellent working order, $14,760. Rescheduling the Coin-Op and Antique Advertising Auction may not have been the preferred option, but if anything, it seems that waiting only served to heighten collector interest. “Those who signed up to bid, whether in the gallery, over the phone or online, recognized the exceptional quality of what was being offered. They were focused on winning. Many of the machines we offered were

On July 6, the Certified Collectibles Group publically revealed their plans for its latest venture under the CGC grading banner. If the acronym CGC is not familiar to you, you probably don’t collect vintage comic books. CGC stands for Comics Guaranty Corporation, and they revolutionized the vintage comic book marketplace by being the first impartial company to grade and encapsulate comic books in tamper evident plastic enclosures back in the year 2000. They are partially responsible for the massive prices being paid for vintage key issue comic books as of late, by bringing confidence and liquidity to the marketplace. CGC is just one division of the Certified Collectibles Group. NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), which focuses on third party coin grading, and PMG (Paper Money Guaranty), which focuses on paper money grading, help make up the two other major divisions. And no mention of third party grading companies would be complete without stating the obvious—most of these companies go by a three- or fourletter acronym. The Certified Collectibles Group has always been at the forefront of analyzing new business opportunities from within the collectibles trade, and CGC has been a revenue driver for the company since they have a virtual lock on comic book grading at present time. Their closest

Unfortunately, by the time CGC released their statement on their new venture, most of the industry was already buzzing with rumors. Their announcement that CGC would venture into the trading card grading business was met with a lukewarm response from some collectors and exceptional praise from others. The market for collectible trading cards has seen a massive speculative boom over these past few years. Record prices are not only being paid for modern and vintage era sports cards, but also collectible card games like “Pokemon and “Magic: The Gathering. Both have been around since the 1990s and have captivated the generation of enthusiasts who grew up with both pop culture icons, so it makes sense that these items are now collectibles and in demand. But, CGC’s entry into this market is somewhat baffling. Even with record prices being paid, there already exist several prominent grading companies in this market. Most of these companies are very respectful, much like CGC, and each tends to cater to different segments of the market, with some cross over. The first is PSA. PSA has been a boon to the trading card industry and grades both sports cards and non-sports card collectibles alike. “Pokemon collectors have flocked to PSA en masse to get their cherished cards graded. Due to how popular PSA is, it has received criticism due to their backlogged turnaround times as of late, but the company has been doing a great job trying to work through the demand. The primary competitor to PSA is BGS (Beckett Grading Services). BGS is another top tier grading company that grades both sports and non-sports trading cards. “Magic: The Gathering collectors seem to gravitate toward BGS, while “Pokemon collectors have been flocking to PSA. A primary difference between PSA and BGS is the

competitor is CBCS, but many consider CGC to be the dominant force, since they revolutionized comic grading and have since graded well over 5 million comic books. NGC, which is also owned by the Certified Collectibles Group, has been fighting a battle against PCGS. PCGS stands for Professional Coin Grading Service and is owned by the Certified Collectibles Group’s closest competitor, Collectors Universe. PCGS is considered by some to be the leader in coin grading at present time, leaving NGC to take the title of second place should this be true. Along with PCGS, the Collectors Universe also owns PSA. PSA stands for Professional Sports Authenticator, which grades trading cards; whether they be sports trading cards or non-sports cards. Confusing matters (and acronyms) even more, CGC no longer grades just comic books. Over the years, the company has expanded the CGC moniker into a magazine grading division, a movie lobby card grading division, and even a concert poster grading division. This left a lot of collectors and enthusiasts in the trade curious as to what other opportunities the company was considering. One such market that has been completely ignored by third party grading and encapsulation has been movie poster grading. Since CGC already grades large size vintage concert posters, most analysts in the trade (myself included) were hoping that CGC would use their vast expertise to start grading and encapsulating movie posters, so when word was announced that CGC was looking to get into other businesses, this would have been an obvious and exciting choice, in my opinion. To this day, buying vintage collectible movie posters even at highly respected auction houses has been a challenge at best, and CGC would easily be able to become the dominant player in this market.
